Hi suehaydee,
As for me, with my personal opinion, there exist NO benefits with changing from Windows 7 to Windows 8(8.1).
Life cycle of Windows 7 ends on January 14th, 2010.
If you want to upgrade your Windows 7, please take into account of Windows 10.

PowerShell batch rename files by date in filename
I'm trying to rename a bunch of mp3's (Win10, pro, x64). First, I need to change "COM" to "us", "GTY" to "ca", and "UK" to "uk", all case senstive. and there's a space I need to cut, and then they have the date the mp3 podcast is for as MM-DD-YYYY but I need it has YYYYMMDD. Also this is only for weekdays, weekends are different.
For example, I have COM 03-13-2012.mp3 that I need renamed to us20170313.mp3. And then there's one for every day of the week, M-F. So I need to rename by the text that is already in the file name and just move those characters around...OR I need to rename by date OR I rename by .csv entries, that could also work, I would just list all the weekdays from here until the cows come home and just run it from that.
I don't think ren in CMD can do something this complex in a .bat file, but I'm not super hip on PS and rename-item and get-childitem. Any pointers on which of the 3 processes would be best? Again, that':
1. rename by text already in the filename
2. rename by date (skipping weekends)
3. rename from .csv input

Sorry, I wasn't asking someone to do it for me, I didn't mean to make it seem like I was asking for that. I was just asking if what I want is even possible using the ideas I listed. Thinking more on this, I was going to try and explain myself more in this reply but then it dawned on me: I can manually do what I need to do in less time than it would take to do research on automating it.

Ok, I think I've worked out what's going on.
I was seeing just two links:
- Windows 10 Client Insider Preview - Build 15063

... but that's because I was looking here:

Rather than here:

Is this split new? I don't remember there being multiple pages offering ISO downloads before.
In any event, I'll try again on Monday with a download that is explicitly the Enterprise version.

Logging stdout and stderr to log file
My team is designing scripts to configure software from properties provided in an xml file.
System configuration: Windows Server 2008 R2, PowerShell 4.0, VMWare stack
We are limited on the hardware and software. We designed using PS v4.0 and it will be more complex to push upgrading the PS version than to find a work around.
The initial design simply wrapped the Write-Host with a wrapper that would make the call to Write-Host and also pipe to Out-File so the output was placed in the console and the log file. Issue was found that the stderr was only being placed to the console and not the log file. That is understood.
We research redirection in PS. We found that Start-Transcript is only available in PS v5.0.
We tried to look at redirection using
%> My-Method *>&1 > log.txt
This also is not working to redirect both stdout and stderr to the log file.
My current solution is to gather the text in the PowerShell console (not ISE but the plain PowerShell console) and copy it to the log file. I have researched trying to find this property without any luck.
I was able to find how to get the current console's text for the ISE but this is not was is used to execute the script. As a not the script is called automatically via a remote invocation.
Thank you,

BGINFO - blurry! Driving me nuts...
We use BGINFO and it works great. I am in the process of re-configuring it for production servers so they have a red background. I do not like the standard red as it hurts my eyes so I chose a custom color. On Server 2008 R2 it diplays exactly how I would expect it to display. However, on Server 2012 this is what happens:
This is what it displays if I click 'preview'. This is also what I get when logging into a 2008 R2 box. This is good.
This is what I get AFTER I click OK and it exits the preview. It looks blurry and distorted. This is bad.
We are using BGINFO v4.16 and I tried 4.20 without any difference. I thought that this problem only occurred when using custom colors but now I just realized that it is just more noticeable with certain colors like red. Others (like blue background and white text), you can't tell as much but it is still blurry and distorted.
What's going on? Anyone else having the same issue?

The problem doesn't lie with BGInfo, the issue is that Windows converts the BMP created by BGInfo into a JPG and that's where the degradation occurs.

Andrew Barnes - ZTIAddMember.wsf script help
Hi All,
So I am attempting to add a computer to a security group, the script above appears to theoretically tick the boxes.
Has anyone actually had this working?
I gather the following 'should' work...
Copy ZTIAddMember.wsf to script folder
Then as below
The script is run in a task sequence with the command line:
cscript.exe "%SCRIPTROOT%\ZTIAddMember.wsf
The code below is a sample of the customsettings.ini changes.
[Settings]Priority=Default
Properties=CustomProperty, ADGroup
[Default]
OSInstall=Y
ADGroup = LDAP://CN=IT Computers,OU=Groups,DC=corp,DC=continuum,DC=com (changed to my security group).
Where do you put this: cscript.exe "%SCRIPTROOT%\ZTIAddMember.wsf ???
I placed this under Recover from Domain
I have also tried it with a cscript.exe "%SCRIPTROOT%\ZTIAddMember.wsf" (Note additional speech mark at end)
I have also ran as a user with operator rights to the security group.
Do we have a step by step guide?

You will need to use cscript.exe "%SCRIPTROOT%\ZTIAddMember.wsf" . Also, make sure you are running the step with an account that has access to add the machine.
-Nick O.
------------------------------------
Reply:
The problem with running a step with credentials is that the details are plain text in the xml. I use a custom script to do this and use the variables that are used to add the machine to the domain, that way they are not in plain text. I also use an ini file to add multiple groups rather than just the one specified in the cs.ini.
Like Nick said, you will probably need to add credentials to this as there is none within the script itself and you are probably running under a local user account while building your machine.
------------------------------------
Reply:
Hi Nick,
Thanks for coming back to me.
Did you have to modify the script at all?
I have placed cscript.exe "%SCRIPTROOT%\ZTIAddMember.wsf" as a command line. The user that it is 'run as' for testing purposes is a domain admin. I have manually tested the user can apply the computer to the security group and it can...
The CS.ini is configured as in my test environment:
Properties=CustomProperty, ADGroup
ADGroup = LDAP://CN=SecTest,OU=Groups,DC=internal,DC=contoso,DC=local
Are any quotes required? Does the syntax appear to be correct. Any " or % required anywhere?
Many thanks,

What I normally do when debugging MDT scripts is to put a pause in the task sequence just before the script you want to test. That way you can run the script manually from the command line numerous times and don't have to wait for numerous builds.

slow network folder list
why is it that explorer is really slow listing the contents of a network folder?
When I go to \\server\share Explorer displays the content of that root share like it should (fast) but when i click on an folder in that share it takes 10+seconds before explorer shows the content.
funny part of it is that when you go to \\server\share and click on a folder. nothing happens (green bar in the address bar appears)
I open another explorer window and type \\server\share\folder (the one I just clicked on in the other windows) You get the folder listing without delay, but the other explorer window is stil; "thinking" meaning: not showing the content.
also... an xp virtual machine running on that machine has no delay what so ever with network browsing. (W7 runs on that physical machine, not in vm because of terrible perfomance... no VDI for W7 i guess)

It is more likely to be your environment than a bug, since we do not have reports of this from millions of other issues. Do you have this issue immediately after installing Windows 7 with no further third party software installed, especially anti-virus? Can you examine a long running network capture filtered on SMB to see if there are any indications of errors, slowdowns, retransmits, etc?

Very doubtfull.. same issue with different hardware (collegues machine), on different networks. some with the default home grown stuff. But mostly Cisco and HP networks some small some large, all with the same simptoms on my laptop.
If it happens on so many different networks it has to be something on my laptop. Funny thing though is that a vm on my laptop with a bridged nic doesn't have this issue, not even when the host (W7) has trouble.

I'm having similar issues with vista and windows 7. In the folderview it sometimes takes forever to drill down. I'm suspection my somewhat older 3com switches.
I have the problem on xp, w2k, w2k3 and samba shares.
Sometimes windows 7 completely freezes for two minutes waiting for some network response.
I never use hybernation, but i use 'sleep' all the time.
i just turned these network settings of, hoping that it will help.
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global chimney=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
autotuning was already disabled (That one was my first suspect after testing network speed in W7, didn't improve any).
didn't disable chimney and rss though..
But before I try... did it work?

Hi
Better try setting NIC driver options, for example media type to 100Mb full speed instead of auto.
Why tou set windows insted of linux server? I know it is easier but probably problem is linux in this case if all computer connect slow to it
?!?! to quote realdaxen:
I have the problem on xp, w2k, w2k3 and samba shares.
why would the problem be with linux? I don't get it...

After a month of using w7, it's a bit better then vista (but that's easy) but it can't beat xp. i've really had it... if this is the future for desktop windows... count me out. next stop will be Ubuntu with a xp vm on stand by.

I just stumbled upon the solution!! Jeah :-D
You have to disable the grouping!
Right Click in the Explorer Details View --> Select Grouping --> Disable
After that my explorer listed all files immediately!

First, I have a german Windows 7 Version, so maybee the names in my context menu differ from the english names.
When I browse my networkdrive with about 1500 folders inside, I can see all folders immediately (2 sec) in the Folder View (this is the left view). In die right view (details, lists, symbols, etc...) I see some folders and during about 1min all 1500 folders drop in one by on at a rate of about 10-20 folders a second. During this 1 minute I can see the green search indicator in the address bar.
In my right view (details, lists, symbols, etc...) Explorer writes somthing about the selected kind of grouping.
If I right-click in my right view (details, lists, symbols, etc...), I get a context menu with an item "groups" (don't know if it has the same name in english version). If I select this menu item, I get a list of possible grouping options. One of these options says something like "none" or "disable". (again... german version).
After I selected this option, the text in my right view which said something like "all groups" is gone and Explorer shows me all 1500 folders immediately (2 sec).
That's all.
I would insert a screenshot, but this forum does not support this.. :-(
Update: Here comes a screenshot. Hope it helps although all is in german. The last item in the group by menu is the "none" item.

Thanks a lot man... !!!
This was driving me crazy on my x64 machine. This is indeed a bug.
My laptop running still the RC (and the x86 version) doesn't behave this way.
I can confirm this "bug"..!
HERE IS THE REAL PROBLEM :
When browsing a new share where the default is set to an unknown (?) parameter,
it will default to grouping but NO grouping options set or an grouping option that is not valid for the media present at that time or which is disabled in the group more options.
Hence file listing will be excrutiatingly slow.
Filesizes of the content within the folder makes a difference.. I have created folders with 100+ 1KB text files and it processes it fast.
When it is my movie database, it is very slow.
I'll upload a movieclip of this behaviour later on my website and edit this post.
I can confirm this is still present on RTM !!! (since I am running RTM from MSDN-AA)
I'll update this post later...

The more I think about it I come to the conclusion that it is not a bug but somewhat expected behaviour.
The meta data is the thing that is in the culprit. There are so many forms of it that you cannot set all types of meta data to every file.
They could have done 2 things :
Option 1 ->
retrieve full list first, display it and then retrieve meta data and group them.
.......... this means that files will move afterwards on screen, which is probably unwanted in case of drag and drop options...
Option 2 ->
retrieve full list and meta data and while loading, order them and display them.
.......... this is what is being done right now. But on certain folders like network shares this can be problematic as it can lead to very long load times.
Possible solution ?? Hmmm
The programmers of explorer have made a choice between showing

Screw Microsoft.
I discovered the solution in 2005 with XP, and I'm refraining to apply it to win& since it is a registry fix I can't miss with.
The problem is in God damn Windows behavior. It is a BUG meant by DESIGN.
The filthy DESIGN assumes that whenever you connect to a network share - whatever the remote end is - your client OS will try looking for shared printers and/or assigned scheduled tasks to INHERIT!!!
This TRY is extremely costly and can be disabled by this reg-fix:

I have a Windows 7 box (named HTPC) that hosts all my media files... music, movies, etc.... It is not setup as a media server. I simply browse the files through file sharing and open them on the remote end. I have several file shares. Some are on local SATA drives, but others are on an attached eSATA enclosure running off a Highpoint RAID controller. It doesn't seem to matter where the share is, it suddenly takes about 30 seconds to open the share from any computer on my network.
Once I've opened any file share on HTPC from another PC on my network, any other file shares on HTPC open just fine. To be honest, it really seems like when the power management feature (enabled by default) on the NIC is not shut off. However, I disabled that a long time ago. On top of that, other network activities to the HTPC (remote desktop, ping, etc...) work instantly. It is only file shares that take a long time to "wake up".
I started having the problem after a round of windows updates. I hadn't updated the particular PC in a long time, so it was a ton of updates, with several reboots inbetween.
I'm out of ideas. I want the file shares to snap open like they used to. Nothing is showing in the event logs, so I'm not sure what else I can do to troubleshoot (unless I can turn the logging up or something...).

I am using a Synology NAS server.
I have updated my Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1, and this problem described here appeared ! (I have not it before - my Windows 8 has been installed by migrating from Windows7)
I was waiting for a patch from Microsoft to correct issues in the new W8.1 (I will wait until tomorow, the patch tuesday...). My plan is to reinstall everything with my W7 Key, and W8 migration key, and then updating again to W8.1.
Today I discover this discussion in the technet forum ! I am very surprised to discover that this problem is known since Windows XP maybe, and that nobody has a clear solution ?
Thanks for your response.

I have been searching everywhere for this solution... Thank you thank you. This has also been causing my remote machine to crash for some reason when accessing a network folder with 2TB of video files and literally took tens of minutes to load. Now loads in less than 2 seconds and remote machine isn't crashing.
FYI anyone else disable grouping then go to
tools-> folder options -> view -> click apply to folders to disable grouping by default from now on
Can't believe this is still an issue

PERCENTILE_DISC as a plain aggregate
I have a situation where I just want to see what the 80, 50 and 20 percentile are for the data I have. I want one row. I would like to write something like:
SELECT PERCENTILE_DISC(.8) within group (order by col1) as Col180Per ,PERCENTILE_DISC(.5) within group (order by col1) as Col150Per PERCENTILE_DISC(.2) within group (order by col1) as Col120Per from table
I can achieve this using a derived table and distinct.
with cte as (SELECT PERCENTILE_DISC(.8) within group (order by col1) over () as Col180Per ,PERCENTILE_DISC(.5) within group (order by col1) over () as Col150Per PERCENTILE_DISC(.2) within group (order by col1) over () as Col120Per from table ) select distinct Col180Per, Col150Per,Col120Per from cte;
Here is the connect item I selected:
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/3119511
Any bets on how fast MSFT can close it? My guess is that it will be closed by morning.

Well... as a simple workaround you can simply use DISTINCT PARTITION BY constant or blank, like this:
SELECT DISTINCT 1 ,PERCENTILE_CONT(0.5) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY num) OVER (PARTITION BY 1) AS MedianCont ,PERCENTILE_DISC(0.5) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY num) OVER (PARTITION BY 1) AS MedianDisc FROM T GO
-- you can simply use blank OVER() as well
-- if you want to get aggregated by groups then simply replace the "DISTINCT 1" with the "DISTINCT <column name>"
This will give you one row which is aggregated of all
* I know this is not what you want, but a workaround to get the result.
** According to Microsoft response, they keep it open but what important is the reason : to see if there is significant interest. As always if you want it to be done you need to promote it and bring other people to vote it (there is only one vote at this time)

WakeOnLan
Hi,
wouldn't it be a good ideas to implement a WOL feature in RD Client?
Im using it frequently on ma iPad do some work on a Computer hat home while I'm away. But I always have to start the computer by WOL first with an extra tool.
This could be one option preferences to WOL the computer first.
thanks
Uwe
PS: in this case I'm not talking about connecting to servers (which normal run 24/7) but connecting to "normal" desktop computer.- Edited by UweE Thursday, March 30, 2017 9:07 AM

I wondering who wrote the program for Chess Titans?
I set back and wonder who wrote the program for Chess Titans. Who ever it was must have never played a game of chess in there life. If they had played they would have known. When a king has no where to go, with out putting it self into check. It is not a draw, it's a loss. Maybe if Microsoft would make sure the people that write the programs. Knows how the game is played. Then there would not be so many people complaining about this. Maybe if the people that are running Microsoft would look at the complaints. They would have the game changed, and find a way where people could fix it. Now I am going to be as honest as I can be. The person that wrote the two parts, when a king has no where to go it is a draw. And to program a game to put it self into this position. And to keep putting the challenger into check when it knows it has lost the game, so it will be called a draw. Needs to be slapped in the head real hard.
I just played a game where the computer only had two pieces left. A queen and a knight, while I had two queens and other pieces. Before I could get pieces to stop it from putting me into check. It called it a draw.

Best practice for uninstalling software with PowerShell
Hello there!
Like a lot of other applications out there the BlueJeans Desktop App MSI comes in two flavours: Per User MSI & Per Machine MSI.
Today, it is possible to have both installed on the same machine, but I have an increasing number of customers who have users with both installed and want to be able to clean it up. I have put together a cleanup script that handles uninstalling our application, but what I need to know from the community is whether I should utilize PowerShell to connect to each machine and run the script remotely or deploy the script via SCCM, IBM BigFix etc. to each machine and run the script locally?
This is how my script looks today:
$bjnProcess = Get-Process -processname BlueJeans If ($bjnProcess) { Stop-Process -processname BlueJeans } else { Write-Output "No BlueJeans process is running." } $bjnPerMachine = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Product -Filter "Name = 'Blue Jeans (All User)'" $bjnPerUser = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Product -Filter "Name = 'Blue Jeans'" $bjnPerMachine.Uninstall() $bjnPerUser.Uninstall() Reply:
Do you have a question or are you just sharing your experience?
\_(ツ)_/
------------------------------------
Reply:
I like to use the following line as you can search by name before installing -
Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Product | Where-Object {$_.Name -eq "SOFTWARE NAME"} | foreach-object -process {$_.Uninstall()} I think best practice is to use the install strings which will remove it and all other versions of that software which is pretty good :)

Reply:
Hello!
My question was more around the best way to deploy the script. For large Enterprises with 1000's of machines should I rely on PowerShell's ability to connect to each machine and run the script remotely or use another system e.g. SCCM to deploy the script to each machine and have the script run locally?
So far I have only tested this out on my machine and it seems to do the job, but if the script itself can be improved I am all ears :-)
------------------------------------
Reply:
You are asking a design question. We cannot guess at your environment. What you do depends on your skill set and the design of your systems.
SCCM has other methods for installing and uninstalling software so you would not want to use a script.
