MS FIXS THE DAMN BUGS BEFORE VISTA SP1 IS RELEASE!
Vista SP1 make more problems then solve problems tha mean vista sp1 is only 50% completed, Vista is not ready for the public uses, people will complaining about the new problems we will be faceing BSOD. MS need to do what they are doing to XP SP3 release that first and start making newer bulids of Vista SP1 improvements, new features, bug fixes, fix all the bug not just some of them and performance. So if this web site http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=3233 is right the improvements is very small SP1 to me MS is not doing there job right because vista is not 100% fixs at all.everbody just wait for Vista Sp2 MS is not going to fixs vista that well with SP1.
P.S.
When MS release Vista Sp1 they better start on vista Sp2 now. Start more better reliability & compatibility, networking tweaks performance and turn up mbps to 70% more bandwidth, impovements scaled down more prompts, fix Vista File CopyPerformance, Vista Network Copy Performance,Vista ZIP File Decompression Performance. MS FIX THEM ALL ON VISTA SP2 AND GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME MS!
Reply:
MS has better things to do then to fully fix a OS that took 5 years anyways. Better things, like trying to buy Yahoo (which has nothing to do with the OS).
LoL.. Seriously, switch to Linux.

Vista SP1 General Info from web articles.
On SP1 availability, "Not a few days after Vista SP1 went RTM it's showing up online. But not from Microsoft, that would be too easy. A number of third party download sites have the final version of Vista SP1 available for download. The company will probably take a dim view of this but they're going to release it anyway but it's still one of those "gray" areas.
Microsoft won't be making the "official" final version of Vista SP1 available to the public until Mid-march. Most of us would agree we have languished with Vista's problems for long enough. Vista SP1 is finished, Microsoft is trying to sell some propaganda about not making it available it but its smoke and mirrors. The service pack is finished. Let us have it.
But they're not. And since they're not, PCWorld found several Bittorrent sites have the final build of Vista SP1 for your installation pleasure. Of course, this probably does fall more on the "wrong side" of the law than the "right" side. If that won't bother you, then feel free to fire up your torrent client and search for it. But, you might risk getting an angry letter from Microsoft's legal department.
If you're still running one of the beta versions of SP1 you will have to manually uninstall it because the final version has no automatic method for dealing with the uninstall procedure for an older version of itself. Whatever, Microsoft, just release the service pack already so we aren't "breaking" the law just to fix your broken operating system."
On Vista SP1 compatibly problems,
" When Vista released it contained many hardware and software compatibility issues, some of which have been solved and some not. Microsoft made and will soon release Vista SP1 but that too, will be a mixed blessing.
Already some updates required for SP1 have been shown to cause problems. And now, Vista SP1 is going to add to existing compatibility issues to an already troubled operating system.
My experience with Vista and the final version of the service pack has been rather smooth but that's not been the case for other users. When Vista SP1 is released users may find some programs working under Vista without the service pack will cease to function completely or in part.
The company has released a list of programs that have known compatibility issues under Vista SP1. Some have updates, others do not. It would be highly advisable to install any and all applicable updates before upgrading to the service pack if you find you will be affected.
Vista SP1 will be a mixed blessing due to the new compatibility issues and because it doesn't fix everything Microsoft promised. There are a few speed boosts but not so much that it will be noticed in ever day computing. Network file transfers and local transfers have been improved slightly but under other circumstances it can be as much as 20% slower than Vista without the service pack.
It's a mixed bag, for sure. It's one step forward but two steps back. There may be hope for Vista SP2 or even Windows 7."
"Vista SP1 was supposed to fix problems, instead it's been very good at creating entirely new ones. A recent update required to install Vista SP1 sent some PCs into endless reboot cycles, some of which could not be recovered. Now, it seems that installing SP1 will break some of your programs that are working perfectly without the service pack.
Microsoft has composed a list of affected programs which is made of mostly security and anti-virus applications. The following have updates available which fix the compatibility issue.
BitDefender AV/Internet Security
Fujitsu Shock Sensor
Jiangmin KV Antivirus version 10 and 2008
Trend Micro Internet Security
ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7.1
Iron Speed Designer
Xheo Licensing
Rising Personal Firewall
NYT Reader
The problem with the NYT reader is slightly amusing. It stops working when the right mouse button is pressed. An odd problem to say the least.
These programs currently do not work with Vista SP1 installed and information about updates was unavailable.
Free Allegiance
Novell ZCM Agent
Cnet says that these new issues will only increase worries over backwards compatibility in Vista. Microsoft never promised to fix backwards compatibility issues, basically, update your hardware, software and every other thing or just stop using Windows.
With Linux not exactly ready for prime time then it's upgrade or get new equipment, at least Microsoft makes your choice easy, expensive but easy."
On vista SP1 failing to stop pirates;
Microsoft said that Vista SP1 would disable two of the most common hacks for making illegal copies of the operating system "think" they were legitimate. The two hacks are the OEM BIOS and the grace timer exploit. The OEM BIOS hack attempted to make the copy legitimate by telling the operating system that it was installed from a manufacture like HP, Acer or other. The grace timer hack just kept resetting the "time bomb" that told Vista when to deactivate. Both have been shown to work. But they work no more, not with Vista SP1.
When ZDnet tested both of those hacks on Vista SP1, the operating system successfully ignored them and continued to require a valid activation key. However, a new hack has cropped up that allows illegal copies of Vista SP1 to be activated as genuine.
According to Adrian Kingsley-Hughes the hack is not complicated and is relatively easy to find in the shady corners of the Internet, along with those trying to sell $10 "genuine" Rolex watches. He says all you have to do is download the hack, run it, reboot and Vista will be activated. Screenshots are provided as proof.
Original Vista hacks have been dealt with but Microsoft has opened up an entirely new way, possibly easier way of hacking the activation system. It's not clear if Microsoft has a way of checking to see if a Vista system has been hacked or not. Remember that Vista occasionally rechecks to see if it is still genuine with the Microsoft servers.
It's illegal to use or install pirated software, be it an operating system or other and Microsoft doesn't take too kindly to it. Our advice is to go genuine and forget that these hacks even exist. Unless you want to look forward to letters from Microsoft spelling out fines and jail time, don't do it.

I sometime post fairly long answers, and find it irritating that this code editor periodically scrolls up while typing, causing the text I'm typing to disappear below the edge of the editing window. The VMRC client is for use with Virtual Server...
Error when trying to start virtual server: The VMRC client is for use with Virtual Server and does not support connecting to VNC.
I found little information about this error so thought I'd share the resolution in my case. It turned out SuperMicro SuperO Doc monitoring software installs its own VNC server called TridiaVNC. Since we don't use this function of SuperO, disabling the service fixed the problem.
Hope this helps,

Issues - signing in
Prior to and following the release version of Vista's (x64) SP1. A particular issue which I'm getting is that IE7 more often than not, is failing to logon to Microsoft's Technet or MVLS website. Or at some point following logon I get a connection failure and I'm offered the diagnose connection problems link.
However in comparison, my little Fox doesn't let me down, where IE7 does.
I've tried resetting IE7 to its defaults, but I have done this now more than once. And I'm starting to get a little bit weary of this quirky behaviour.
I'm hoping that i'm not the only one!
Another funny issue with Softgrid client Management console
I found a funny issue with Softgrid Client Management Console. This is how you can reproduce
1. Open the softgrid client management console.
2. Navigate to Applications,
3. Select any application
4. Press "Ctrl" + "+" (from the numerical keypad)
Once Ctrl + is pressed you will see many new column appears on the console.
This does not do anything harmful otherwise.

Easy Automated Sharepoint Backups including daily folders and trash collection
Recently at work, we were looking for a better way to do backups. We had previously used a backup script provided by SAMs (the unleashed folks) which worked very well, but it was missing a few thigns which would make it even better. So I took the script and made it even better, it now does automatic organization as well as trash collection. I posted it on my dev blog... hope someone gets some use out of it:
I have just released a new version - 2.6 - of the deployment tool for SQLCLR assemblies. It is a minor release, but it implements some changes that are fundamental for coming versions and also fixes a couple of minor bugs.
The download page for it is here, and if you want general information about what the SqlClr project is, you should go here.

Welcome to the Group Policy in Windows Server 2008 Discussion Forum! This is the new home for all Group Policy discussions related to Windows Server 2008 that do not fit in any of the other specialized forums. Our aim is to make this a collaborative forum, and that it will be driven by the community more than the team. We want to hear from you and value your experience!
One of the goals of this forum is to provide quality information and reduce the amount of noise. To achieve this, some off-topic posts may be removed, or moved to more appropriate forums. If one of your posts is moved – don't be alarmed – we're trying to get the most appropriate answer in the shortest timeframe. Another key goal is answer questions whenever we can, and attempt to point you to the appropriate resources when we can't. While we cannot commit to answering everything because of development cycles, we will do our best to get you the information as soon as we can.
In the spirit of fair exchange, for the information we'll be providing to you, this is what we would like to see in return:
Read it: Read regularly. You can read the forums using any RSS reader (although you can't reply). Look for the small orange XML button near the bottom of the page.
Search it: Search before you post – you may find that what you are looking for has already be raised by somebody else.
Mark it: If a post helps you out, mark it as helpful so that it can rise to the top of searches. Chances are other people are looking for the same thing. If someone answers your question, mark the response as an answer. If there are multiple helpful responses, mark all of them as answers.
Answer it: If someone asks a question that you know the answer to, post the answer! It doesn't have to be definitive; pointing someone in the right direction can be good enough.
Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Hello,
I hope no one minds me posting in this thread but it seems that IIS is no longer a Server Role and it's very hard to install, as well as duplication between Server Manager (MMC) and the initial configuration dialog, which represents a hold-over from a bygone era.
------------------------------------ Reply:
The IIS role on Windows Server 2008 is now known as the Application Server. And, because IIS 7 is so modularized from previous versions, it will be a bit different to install. You can accept some basic defaults, but if you really want to tailor it to specific needs and remove everything that isn't needed, you will need a better understanding of the individual modules (I think there are something like 42 or 44 modules).
Then, once it is installed as a role, it has its MMC installed with the Server Manager MMC so you can manage all roles from a single console.

How to publish configuration manager internet-based role servers via ISA Server
I am looking for best practice guidelines how to publish internet-faced Configuration manager servers for internet-based access via an advanced firewall like ISA Server.
There are a couple of supported scenarios where you can manage SCCM clients on the internet via Configuration Manager in native mode. This article tells you which scenario's: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693824.aspx
There is less information available how to configure your firewall (ISA Server 2004/2006 or other product) for secure publishing the CM servers to the internet.
You need to know how to configure your web publishing rules and web listeners for proper and secure access to the CM servers. Questions about ports to open, SSL bridging (better) or SSL tunneling, authentication requirements, certificate requirements, HTTP filtering requirements for the different Configuration manager roles may arise.
What I like to see is a result (blog or whitepaper) from the Configuration manager product team and the ISA server product team how to configure your firewall for secure access from the internet to configuration manager servers.
However, because this worked for Adam, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best way to configure this or that it's supported by the ISA Server team. To request official documentation from the ISA Server team for how to configure ISA with Internet-based site systems in Configuration Manager 2007, send an email jointly to isadocs@microsoft.com and smsdocs@microsoft.com.

I agree with Phil on this point.
All threads 'should' bounce back to the top of the thread list when there is a reply. Otherwise, conversations will be 'lost' -and users will suffer.
If it is a choice of OP order or REPLY order, REPLY order is the only way to manage the forums. (If this is a user option -that 'might' be useful for some. My 'gut' reaction tells me that there is really little utility for OP order.)You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.

No welcome screen with XP pro SP3 RC2
I install SP3 RC2 in a Dell notebook Inspiron E1405/640m with Intel T2300 and 2GB 667 MHz in RAM memory. Windows XP professional SP2
The SP install was OK I reboot the machine several times test several programs and it apparently to work fine. Then turn off and restart next day with the surprise that the welcome screen never shows. Also try in safe mode and again the welcome screen never shows. Need to boot with Windows XP pro SP2 CD and go to the recovery console and then run a batch process in the uninstall folder to uninstall sp3.
After this the Notebook can boot. Also noted that my Microsoft wireless mouse
Doesn't work in SP3 and after returning to SP2 also it doesn't works until I reinstall the drivers. It was a nightmare.

I had the same problem in a custom built ASUS A8V-XE with AMD FX-55 2.6 GHZ w/1GB Memory & NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache video card. The first time I loaded it, it worked great for the rest of the day. The next day the user got just a blank screen w/no hard drive activity. Had to uninstall SP3 from safe mode to get him back up. If you find a fix for this please post it.
Thanks in advance

Hey , Prior to installnig the SP3 rc2 did you check for the latest drivers? WHQL? with in the device manager everything installed correctly? If there are any yellow marks next to an item check the manufacturers web site for the latest and greatest. Next question were you able to boot into safe mode? *Pressing f8 right after the bios initialization screen?
For the mouse issue since I am assuming the device is USB based, there really isnt any other solution except to have an WIAK installation disk available. Just be aware this are for your convience. They are considered an advanced user or pro issue. Not for the average consumer. From what I have read, for mouse, this isnt expected to change until we swtich away from old standard bio's to the release of uEFI and becomes common place. Bios just doesnt recognize u.s.b. mice.
it sounds like you have windows video driver issues with SP rc 1 or 2? either way the drivers may have been unsigned or not WHQL tested. if your system drivers didnt show this may be the problem. How every for testing purposes, and to reliably install sp3 RC2, I use the lastest AMD processor driver, and dual core optimizer, to install on my nforcfe4 based mb. For the Dell system there were a couple of other posts about notebook problems. Sorry couldnt be more help with that one. If you test again, check in the following places for problems and contact one of the MSFT team with your logs
%windir% \setuplog \Windowsupdate log \Setuperr
And finally within the uninstall folder should be the svcpack.log. I have been fortunate not to need the last one. Either my installation worked or completely uninstalled it self.

We still want someway to show you threads you've never seen before which is the bold. Some forum systems then have some other visual indication that new items are in the threads you've already read, which we do not.
One suggestion I have is adding a new filter "Unread Messages", we'd then show a combination of threads you've seen that have new items and threads you've never seen. But we'd still have bold for the threads you've never looked at.
This will also allow you to select "My Threads" and then filter on seeing just the threads that have new replies.

Okay, so then that's my new suggestion. I don't want a filter. Well, maybe I want both. I don't know.
But: I want to see the last reply stat for each thread (who/when), and I want an indicator that the thread has changed read state.
All threads are new at some point, so who cares if it's bold or not. Set them to bold when someone replies, that's my suggestion as reflected in earlier posts in this thread. Phil Brammer | http://www.ssistalk.com

This is not complete and would need some more tweaking, but you could do something like:
declare
@sql varchar(2000)
set
@sql = 'create table [ASHUTOSH] ('
select
@sql = @sql + column_name + ' ' + (case when data_type = 'nvarchar' or data_type = 'varchar' or data_type = 'char' then
data_type

data_type
+ '(' + cast(numeric_Precision as varchar) + ',' + cast(numeric_Scale as varchar) +')' else
data_type
end) + ','
from
information_schema.columns
where
table_name = 'attribute '
set
@sql = @sql + ')'
print
@sql
you would need to handle keys, defaults, and what not. Hope this helps some.

May I know if there are any firewall exists between SCE and client? If yes, you may like to turn off it as a test.
Also I would like to confirm with that does this issue only happens on the client EXCH1? And is there any other strange symptom on the EXCH1?
Thanks.

Hi
There is no firewall between the two, and yes this issue only occurs on that client.
EXCH1 is a production exchange server. I had an issue installing the health agent in the beginning because the Administrative shares were disabled.
The Events 21400 and 1103 (above) are generating continuously .

When I installed the agent for the first time, the installation failed. The error message said that Administrative shares were disabled. The KB directed me to change the value of a registry entry to "1" on EXCH1 which enabled the following on shared folders C$, ADMIN$, E$, IPC$, Resources$. I can't remember the exact KB or error. But after doing that it installed the agent sucessfuly.

Importing post from the Newsgroups
Importing the posts into the Web forum has made it very difficult to use, in that the imported posts appear to be listed in 'added date' order, not 'original post' order. Agreed. Surely there is a way to make the old migrated threads show their true date/time and push them down in the list.

Search Companion vs OpenXML files
Search Companion (XP SP2) does not list OpenXML and OpenDocuments if you select "search for documents option"
%windir%\srchasst\mui\%lang%\lcldocs.xml must be updated!
SP# and Pagemaker
Installed SP3 and now Pagemaker 6.5 will not load its template (.T65) files. Standard files (.P65) are OK. Uninstalled SP3 and all is right. Very strange!
Reply:
Sounds reminicent of what happened to some people when SP2 first rolled out. I didn't get it myself, but I got hit by DivX. As it turned out, anyone using XP SP2 in combination with DivX 5.2.1 or earlier, any right-clicking on explorer.exe crashed explorer.exe.
How up to date is Pagemaker? I don't mean to say "go buy 7.0" - but there are some updates for 6.5 here:
Updating DivX fixed the issues I ran into. For those that had issues with software operability it very often was an update by the software vendor that resolved it in the end. At least with SP2, some of that was expected as D.E.P. was introduced and some "guidelines" to how XP manage memory outlined in SDK's that encouraged developers to follow said "guidelines" became rules in XP after SP2. Some software and drivers had to be re-written/updated to allow for the changes in how it would now need to work with memory. It really sucked for those that had drivers for their hard-disk controller that were in need of a new driver as they would typically be the ones that would install SP2 and find themselves in a blackscreen upon reboot, or if they were lucky, a reboot-loop (which made it easier to uninstall SP2 until the drivers were updated).
I'm ranting. Try updating PageMaker. Try an emulation mode also.
Let me know how it goes and we'll take it from there.

It works fine with SP2 installed. Only SP3 gives it problems. I do not know how to run PM in emulation mode.
------------------------------------ Reply:
It is not that hard to launch a program in emulation mode. Just make a new shortcut to the programs executable, then on the properties for the new shortcut choose an emulation mode.
I usually check the original shortcut in the Start Menu, and click Properties, to see where the executable is. Then I go to the folder and manually make a new shortcut to the same .exe file. Once created, right-click the new shortcut and select Properties. On the Properties window you will have options including emulation modes. These were made to increase support for legacy software on XP - to ease migration pains way back at XP's launch. I also rename the new shortcut so that it reads the same as the original shortcut, but with "(Win98)" after it (if I was using Windows 98 emulation, for example). If the shortcut is long term for any reason, I place it in the Start Menu alongside the original.
------------------------------------ Reply:
Thanks for the info. Basically I wanted Microsoft to be aware of the problem and correct it before the final SP3 comes out. I will try the emulation mode meanwhile.

Spatial Changes in the February CTP
Just wanted to let everyone here know that there is a list of the spatial changes made in the February CTP available now on Ed's brand-new blog:
Some often requested features such as a primary filter operator and geodetic reduce were added, and a relatively small behavior change related to degenerate objects was made. With a content-rich and new feature laden introductory post like this, I can't wait to see what he manages for a follow-up.

SQL Server 2008 Installation or service start/stop problems today
Microsoft has identified a bug in all SQL Server 2008 versions affected by today's leap day, Feb 29th, 2008:
We have recently discovered an issue with SQL Server 2008 CTPs that result in SQL Server 2008 not starting or installing on Feb 29 GMT only. We recommend that you do not run, install or upgrade this CTP on Feb 29 GMT to minimize any impact in your environment. You can install starting on March 1 GMT. If you have an immediate issue that cannot wait until march 1st GMT contact sqlbeta@microsoft.com before taking any further steps.
EDIT: The opportunity for this bug has passed.
Product Announcement - FarPoint Spread for BizTalk Version 2
Spread for BizTalk was intially released in 2006 as a BizTalk Excel Pipeline Disassembler. We have continued to refine the product based on customer feedback and are currently at version 1.7.
This week we announced the release of Version 2 of Spread for BizTalk!
Spread for BizTalk Version 2 includes a BizTalk Pipeline Spreadsheet Disassembler and a BizTalk Pipeline Spreadsheet Assembler.
The disassembler parses Excel streams (XLS & Excel 2007 XML, CSV, TXT) into XML data that maps to schemas created using the Spread for BizTalk Spreadsheet Schema Wizard.
The pipeline assembler uses the XML data in BizTalk Applications to create Excel (XLS or Excel 2007 XML), and PDF documents. The BizTalk developer can use the Spread for BizTalk Spreadsheet Format Designer to specify the formatting of the document produced by the assembler. Both the assembler and disassembler are codeless solutions and the wizard and designer are integrated into Visual Studio 2005.
We have produced a video that presents a compelling argument for the inclusion of Spread for BizTalk in any BizTalk Server deployment where the integration of Excel documents is important: http://fpoint.com/biztalk/videos/SfBTV2-2.aspx
Its nice to see compatibility with the Excel 2007 format now in addition to the new assembler. Thanks again for the Chicago BizTalk user group presentation!

[Tutorial]Windows Vista: Snipping Tool
Windows Vista: Snipping Tool
By-Rajbir Singh
Introduction to Snipping Tool: Microsoft Corporation has introduced a new application called 'Snipping Tool' in its latest version of Windows i.e. Windows Vista. Snipping Tool lets you take screen shots of your Windows applications or a certain part of the screen. Windows users can now use this powerful application to take screenshots instead of using the old method- Alt-PrintScreen or simply Printscreen.
How to start Snipping Tool: Please follow these steps to start the Snipping Tool: 1. Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
2. Click 'All Programs'. 3. Now click 'Accessories' folder from the menu. 4. From programs that appear click 'Snipping Tool'. The program will now start.
Snipping Tool will be added to Quick Launch Bar when you run the Snipping Tool for the first time.
How to use Snipping Tool: The program looks like this:
The Snipping Tool provides the user with many options to take the screen shots. You can get these snipping options by clicking the small arrow alongside the 'New' button. Following are the snipping options:
1. Free-form Snip- This option lets you draw a shape of your choice to take a screen shot. Once the user has drawn the shape & leaves the mouse button the snip is created.
2. Rectangular Snip- As the name suggests, this option lets you create a rectangular selection. Once the rectangle is drawn the snip is created of the area.
3. Window Snip- This option lets you take a snip or a screen shot of an entire window. All the contents of that window will be captured in this snip.
4. Full-screen Snip- This option lets you capture the entire screen area.
Snipping Tool Options: To change the Snipping Tool options or preferences click on the 'Options' button.
A new window will appear:
These options do the following:
1. Hide instruction text- This hides the instruction text, if selected.
2. Always copy snips to the Clipboard- If enabled, it copies all the snips to the Clipboard so that you can paste it in any image editing application and edit as per your requirements.
3. Include URL below snips(HTML only)- If enabled, this option lets you add the link(URL) of address of the website you are viewing in Internet Explorer if saved in MHT/Single file HTML file format.
4. Prompt to save snips before exiting- If enabled, the snipping tool will prompt you to save the snips before exiting.
5. Display icon in Quick Launch bar- If enabled, the Snipping Tool will be displayed in the Quick Launch bar.
6. Show screen overlay when Snipping Tool is active- When enabled the Snipping Tool interface will be hidden while creating a snip.
7. Ink color- Lets you choose the colour of border of the snip.
8. Show selection ink after snips are captured- If enabled, it displays a border in the selected colour on the snip.
Saving Formats: The Snipping Tool lets you save the snip or screen shot in various file formats. You can save the snips in PNG, GIF, JPEG, MHT file formats.
Tools:
Highlighter Tool: It lets you highlight certain parts of the snip.
Pen Tool: It lets you draw and annotate in the snip. You can choose the desired colour of the pen and even customise the tip & thickness of the pen.
Send Snip Tool- It lets you send the snip as an embedded image or as an attachment.
Eraser Tool- It erases anything which was drawn by the pen tool or highlighted by the highlighter tool.
The Final Word:
Pros: The Snipping Tool is the first of its kind in the history of Windows. Its now easier to take screen shots of any area of the screen without pressing the Alt-PrintScreen combination without any need of third party application. It comes free with Windows Vista.
Cons: It doesn't provide any option to add text to the snip. The only way you can add text is by using the pen tool or by editing the snip in an image editor. Microsoft should provide this option in the future through updates.
Conclusion: The Snipping Tool is a boon for the those who want to share the snips with others to discuss things or just for the sake of fun & that too without spending on third party applications! Surprise the users with new tools every now and then, Microsoft!
EDIT- I have posted images but they aren't appearing in the post.
Expandable Thread Headers
One of the nice things about the Outlook Express news reader is the ability to show all of the headers (subject lines) of a thread in an expandable tree view, which is collapsed initially. This enables one to quickly review a thread previously visited and decide if it may be necessary to check out the latest posts to see if an issue has been resolved, or add comments to it. Since this web interface requires posting back to view each message, this would speed up the process.Kevin Spencer, Chicken Salad Alchemist

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor
Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor beta
The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a small beta application that you can run on your current Windows XP-based computer to find out if it's ready for an upgrade to Windows Vista. When you run the Upgrade Advisor, it will scan your computer and generate an easy-to-understand report of any known system and device compatibility issues, along with recommendations on how you can get your PC ready for Windows Vista. Microsoft plans to add functionality to Upgrade Advisor, such as checking how your software applications will run with Windows Vista. Download the beta version today and check this site in a few months for a new version.
Upgrade Advisor is currently a beta release and contains functionality and features that have not been thoroughly tested and may contain errors. Please consider the information that Upgrade Advisor currently provides as preliminary and check back periodically for new versions, which will include updated device information and additional functionality such as checking how your software applications will run with Windows Vista.

Hi Bill,
You wrote that you used two versions of Vista Upgrade Advisor (VUA). Please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all versions of VUA. With both the beta version and the 1.0 version, you may have two entries.
Go to your temp directory and delete all files that start with VUA. Your temp directory is C:\Documents and Settings\ your alias \Local Settings\Temp
Install and run VUA 1.0. You wrote that it ran for hours. If it runs longer than 15 minutes, stop it.
Go to your temp directory and look for files starting with VUA. You should have four files. If you have less than four, post back with the names of the files. If one is missing, we may be able to help you with just that information. If all four are there, then please contact me offline so I can get your temp VUA files. You can send mail toBa-mmoore@CmicrosoftD.com - this is a no spam address, just remove the capital letters for my address.
That seems very strange. A couple of things to try:
1. Do you have the Beta installer? If so, try installing the application again. Then run version 1.0, which should uninstall the beta automatically.
2. If you're comfortable editing your registry settings, do the following:
a. create a backup of your registry
b. search for "UpgradeAdvisor" and delete all entries. Then try running the v1.0 installer again.
Let me know if that helps.

Hi t_henriott ,
This DMI error does not appear to be an error with Vista Upgrade Advisor. This error indicates that some of your devices are using the same DMI resource.
The primary hardware device on a computer is the CPU. There are also several additional devices, such as video and sound. All devices have several ways to communicate with the CPU. One of these is DMI. Within DMI, it has a range of resources and no two devices can share the same DMI resource.
To find DMI errors, look in Device Manager: Start Menu -- Settings -- Control Panel -- System -- Hardware Tab -- Device Manager.
You will probably find an entry with a yellow exclamation or a red X. Fixing this kind of error is beyond what I can help you with because I help with Vista Upgrade Advisor issues rather than system issues. However, I have two general suggestions.
It may help to uninstall & re-install the offending driver. Before you do this, you want to have a copy of the driver so you can re-install it. Drivers for devices usually come with the device or with the computer. Also, Window recognizes many devices and has drivers for them.
If you recognize the devices and you know that you don't need one of them, you can disable it. Right-click on it & select disable.
Again, I believe this is not a problem with Vista Upgrade Advisor. If the above does not help, you may want to try other newsgroups related to Windows or check our support site which includes both free and paid assistance(http://support.microsoft.com/). If you bought your computer with Windows already installed on it, contact the maker of the computer (for example, call Gateway for help with a Gateway computer).

Ok the problem persist regardless I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it (last night), I've tried downloading it again and reinstalling it (same). Only to get the same message each time. I've checked for DMI errors as suggested earlier in thread without finding any. I've tried closing other programs that are running with same result. So does anybody have an idea as to what the problem is?
I would love it if vista upgrade advisor generated a text log of just where it crashed so at least i'd have an idea as to what was causing the problem.

I'm not Bill, but I'm having the same issues with the Advisor running for longer than 15 minutes. After I end the Advisor program, my computer will not shut down automatically.
When I search my temp directory, I find three VUA files: VUA_Bucketizer_400SC.xml VUA_Collector_400SC.xml VUA_WinSat_400SC.xml
I've not installed or try to run any beta versions of the Advisor -- only the current release available for download from Microsoft. I run WinXP SP2. I've also uninstalled the Advisor, removed all references to "UpdateAdvisor" in the registry, and have reinstalled the Advisor with the same results.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give. To reply directly, remove the "nope" from my email address.

Hi Keith,
The file you're missing is VUA_QueryAppBlock_*.xml. This file is related to finding all the applications installed on your computer. Its absence indicates that there is a problem searching for installed applications.
Today, we posted a minor improvement to VUA which relates to this area. Please download the newer version.
After you uninstall & then install the newest version, let it run for up to 30 minutes. If it still fails, then please send me your VUA_Bucketizer_*.xml file. Also let me know if you're using English XP or which language you're using.

Please look in your temp directory for VUA temp files.Your temp directory is C:\Documents and Settings\ your alias \Local Settings\Temp
Please remove these files & run VUA again. Let it run for up to 30 minutes & stop it.
Look in your temp directory for files starting with VUA. You should have four or five files. Ignore VUA_XmlReport_*.xml. If any of the others are missing, post back with which files you do have.
VUA_WinSat_*.xml
VUA_Collector_*.xml
VUA_Bucketizer_*.xml
VUA_QueryAppBlock_*.xml
VUA_XmlReport_*.xml
If all four are there, then please send me e-mail with the files attached. You can send mail to Ba-mmoore@CmicrosoftD.com - this is a no spam address, just remove the capital letters for my address. Subject = "The four VUA files from JABWootton"

4) Is there anything about your PC that you think might be unusual, such as if it's a Virtual PC? Is there anything unusual about your connection to the internet, such as a password protected firewall?
5) What spoken language are you running? In particular, have you installed a LIP (you'll know if you have)?

This is what I said in my email.
This is a year-old dual boot Toshiba Satellite laptop (Linux Xandros) with a single Device Manager "error" - my Cisco VPN virtual network adapter looks "broken" unless I am using it to VPN into my work. I plan on removing the dual boot (installing Vista from the DVD and reformatting the drive), but want to make sure I have no hardware issues and that I can still Cisco VPN client to contact work.
What do I do when I have only one VUA file that does not indicate why it quits?

I downloaded the Upgrade Advisor today and I don't seem to be having any luck with it.
It runs for a few minutes and then tells me that either the service is busy or I don't have an active connection: http://i5.tinypic.com/402qn1g.png
Any idea what could be causing this? (As I clearly have an active connection)

Hi Mike, I have the same issue Keith was describing.
I uninstalled the upgrade advisor. Deleted all the temporary VUA files. Downloaded and reinstalled. When I run the advisor it will scan for hours without ever finishing. When I check the temp directory I only have three VUA files.
VUA Bucketizer VUA Collector VUA Winsat
In Windows Task Manager I can see QueryAppBlock.exe running. I cannot force the process to end and Windows will not shut down unless I physically shutdown my machine.
I've also checked under device manager and there are no obvious errors showing up there.
Any assistance you could provide for getting the advisor to run would be appreciated.
Thanks, Greg

Hi Mike, thanks for tips. None of those files that you mentioned are in Temp folder. I did the uninstall and re-install, still the files are not there. I have even tried to run in diagnostic startup and still get the same errors.
In my device manager, I did notice a couple of hardware problems. I had forgotten to install the drivers for my MSI capture card and did so. Otherwise, there appears to be no conflicts or problems.
There is nothing out of the ordinary about this PC and no LIP installed. It is a brand new computer conected to a Linksys router. I am using Trend Micro PC-cillin internet security 2007 as my firewall which does not require a password. Windows firewall has been disabled.

Hi All,
When you get an error that the server is not available...
1) Please try again later & a third time.
2) Do you have a third party firewall? Many intivirus programs come with one & many services, such as Earthlink or AOL, include one that you may have installed. Try with it turned off.
Do you have a proxy server? check your LAN settings Internet Explorer - Tools - internet options - connections tab - lan settings Take careful note of the current settings & copy any text. Then uncheck all the options, so nothing is selected. Then see if you still have internet access. If not, try "automatically detect settings". Be sure to put the settings back to the previous settings when finished.
3) Download VUA again. Uninstall & install the fresh copy.

VUA_Bucketizer VUA_Collector VUA_WinSat
Also, same problem with shutdown -- must manually turn off computer.
FYI -- I have a dual boot system -- running Fedora in the other partition.
Also, and most important -- I cannot intall Vista Ultimate. After entering product code -- machine justs reboots back to XP Pro. Have installed Vista Ultimate on an identical machine (hardware) but with different software on it and only single boot.
Any ideas?

I'm getting the same thing as most of the people here, when I checked my temp folder only the vua winsat, and vua collector files are in there. I uninstalled and reinstalled and checked device manager. I have no idea what the problem is, only that upgrading to Vista doesn't look likely.
------------------------------------ Reply:
I am getting a similar problem to those reported but my VUA exception occurs right after checking for updates and there are no VUAxxx files in my TEMP directory. The message:
"Process id=0x6f8(1784), Thread id=0x360(864)" varies in every number each time the error occurs.
I had run Vista Beta on this machine but on a seperarte hard disk and I am now back to running XP on the original hard disk. The two disks were never installed at the same time.
I had heard that to use two physical processors (this machine is dual Xeon) I needed Ultmate but I was hoping the advisor would tell me that and what software to remove before loading Vista.
I did have a "?" on one piece of hardware (Promise 376/378 Controller) but I disabled that. I have .Net 2.0
------------------------------------ Reply:
I will chime in on the exception errors. After successfully installing Vista Ultimate on my own computer, I wanted to check out what the Upgrade Advisor had to say about the hardware in my wife's computer. After installing I get an exception error (with different numbers) immediately after clicking the shortcut each and every time. De-installing, re-downloading, and re-installing a couple of times (even with reboots in between) make no difference whatsoever.

If you still have a box that had w2000 you more then likely won't be able to run vista on that box anyhow....
Also, thank you for taking the time to post your issues. We want to help and this gives us a chance to offer assistance and to make our product better. I hope we have some fixes for you soon, though I cannot make any guarantees.
Things To Try:
* Try again later
* Delete the temp vua* files. Download a fresh copy. Uninstall & re-install.
(Temp files:C:\Documents and Settings\ your alias \Local Settings\Temp)
* Proxy issues - LAN settings(IE options, connection tab , LAN settings)
* Turn off antivirus/spyware & firewalls
* Device Manager problem entries.
Other things to consider
* Is there anything unusual about your machine (such as is it a Virtual PC)
* VUA only runs on 32-bit versions of XP & Vista; no 64-bit
- It's OK if your hardware is 64-bit, so long as your edition of Windows is 32-bit
- It doesn't run on Vista Enterprise (an edition of Ultimate only available to businesses. The
main difference is that this version has a few tweaks to make it easier for network
administrators to manage remotely).
* You have probably noticed that I asked which VUA temp files you had & for some people
to send them to me. This info was for my use to diagnose problems. The things to try listed
above are the same regardless of which files you have.
* Please do not contact me directly unless asked to do so.
Regards, Mike

Hello
How would i tell if i had a 64 or 32 bit version of XP?
Thank you
------------------------------------ Reply:
Run Windows Explorer. Click the "help" menu and click "about". Near the top, just below "Windows XP," you will see x64 if it's a 64-bit edition of Windows*. -- It doesn't matter if your computer has a 64-bit processor. What matters is if it has a 64-bit edition of Windows.
* My coworkers and I don't have XP 64-bit running for me to verify this text. I have 64-bit Windows 2003 running and it shows "x64" just under "Windows Server 2003." I believe it's the same for XP.

Actually, some of us—through the iterative process of component upgrades—now have Vista-compatable hardware but have been holdouts from XP, enjoying the "stability" of Win2K.
If I can't get Vista for Business [Upgrade] to activate properly; in twenty-something days, I'll simply admit my $200 mistake, ditch Vista, reload Win2K, and tell my cautionary tale of woe.
We think we have found a solution for this. We hope to have it on our website next week. If this prevents VUA from scanning indefinitely, it should also prevent problems with not being able to shutdown.
(If you would like to try something sooner, you might consider installing IE7. I don't want to say that you need IE7. One of the many changes made by IE7 is the same change we are planning to make for VUA. Installing IE7 is something you could try as an experiment. If you do, please post back with your results.)
2) Connectivity problems - proxy problems
* Try setting the LAN Settings in Internet Explorer so nothing is selected, or to the "use a proxy" option. To specify a proxy, you will need to know the name or IP address of your proxy. VUA uses the settings from IE. If you are using another browser, this task needs to be done in IE.
* VUA does detect proxies. It does not detect advanced proxy settings such as a proxy which uses password authentication. Advanced proxy settings such as this are usually only found in business environments.
* If you have a local firewall on your PC, it's possible that it may be blocking VUA. Similarly, if you have a network firewall, it may be blocking VUA. These are issues with configuring your local/network firewall.
3) Error:"encountered an error while scanning your system"
We do not yet have a fix for this.We are still investigating.
4) General troubleshooting has only changed a little:
* Run VUA again later
* Turn off antivirus/spyware programs
* Download VUA again & install the new copy
* We no longer think conflicts shown in Device Manager are causing problems with VUA.

Hi All,
Another update.
I don't have answers for all your questions. The above is most of my information at this time. I have one more note if you're having trouble installing VUA.
VUA install problems may be due to problems with the subcomponents needed by VUA. You may want to try downloading these. Then you can install them separately and install VUA after.
Here are suggestions posted by ITechLegend (not Microsoft). Perhaps they will help.
- Turn off CD/DVD burning software
- Run Disk Cleanup (Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Cleanup)
- Clean the temp directory: C:\Documents and Settings\ your alias \Local Settings\Temp
- ITechLegend refers to an app named "mscong". From searching on this name, it appears he is referring to disabling some apps that run automatically when you start the computer & then run in the background. I do NOT recommend or endorse the app "mscong". I am not familiar with it. I do not know if it is safe to use.
What you CAN do: look through your start menu to find apps that run in the background. Many/most of them will have entries in the start menu which allow you to disable that app.
Also (Advanced!) run services.msc to stop unneeded services--most apps that run in the background will show up here as a service.

Hi Malc P,
Not being able to run VUA does not mean that you cannot run Vista. VUA is a tool that helps determine if you can run Vista. It is not Vista itself.

Hi Billsey,
This appears to be an error in .NET. The next step in troubleshooting on your error is to remove all installed versions of .NET and then re-install .NET 2.0.
I hope this solves your problem. Please post back with the results.

Hi Mike
Little bit concerned about what you are recommending. I have always used windows update to keep my system up to date.
It is fully up to date as stated by windows update. Checked to day 29.02.2007.
In Add Remove programs it shows ;
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 No size displayed
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903) No size displayed.
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Size 88.28MB
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Size 57.72MB
I would assume that I would need to uninstall all of the above?
But why would I remove vers 3 to install vers 2.?
If I did would not windows update then want to upgrade to vers 3?
------------------------------------ Reply:
Hi Delboy2006,
I should have been more specific. Billsey had an error which referenced the Common Language Runtime (CLR) which is the primary component for running .NET applications. Because his error referenced the CLR, we think his problem may be due to a problem with his install of .NET.
I'm sorry for not being more specific that this advice was for Billsey and others with a reference to the CLR in their error message.
Thank you for posting. That allowed me to make this correction.

This is obviously not a resonable solution.
I have on my machine .Net 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0. The machine is up-to-date, with no application or services that are not required.
I still get the same error:
--------------------------- VistaUpgradeAdvisor.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services --------------------------- Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xddc (3548), Thread id=0x9d4 (2516).
Click OK to terminate the application. Click CANCEL to debug the application. --------------------------- OK Cancel ---------------------------
You can't expect me to uninstall .Net Framework 3.0, then .Net Framework 2.0, and then reinstall the both....
------------------------------------ Reply:
Hello Itay and Delboy2006,
First, I'd like to clarify that you don't need 3 different versions of .Net on your system. Installing .Net3.0 will suffice as it includes functionality of previous .Net Frameworks.
As for the problem you're encountering, the most likely cause is .Net. It may be that a beta version of .Net was installed at some point or that the presence of all 3 versions on your system may be the cause of this error due to some unique system configuration. The best way to troubleshoot this is to start with a fresh, clean install. For that reason, it would be recommended that you uninstall all existing versions and try again. A clean .Net 2.0 or .Net 3.0 install should resolve the issue.
Thanks,
Merzin

I have the same problem.
"Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor encountered an error while scanning your system. If the problem persists you can uninstall Windows Vista Advisor and reinstall the latest version."
The problem persists but as far as I am aware I have installed the latest version.
I am running xp windows media center HP says this machine is Vista compatible however I guess this bodes poorly for my upgrading to vista. Any suggestions?

Hi ampm99,
We are still researching this problem. I'm sorry that it's causing difficulty.
You wrote "I guess this bodes poorly...."
I agree it doesn't look good. I wouldn't be very pleased if failed on my PC. However, VUA is not Vista. If VUA worked, it would help you determine if your PC can run Vista. The fact that VUA fails doesn't mean Vista will fail. It just means that you don't have the help that VUA could have provided.
You may be able to contact the maker of your PC to find out if your model can run Vista.
This scanning error has been posted several times. We are researching it.

Regarding the "VUA has encountered an error while scanning...." Error. Make sure you are connected to Internet while using VUA. Thats it. I had the same error when I was scanning my system as disconnected. I scanned it after connecting to Internet and it worked.

Thank you tapspat,
As people try this, please post back with your results. We have been looking for a problem in the program rather than that connectivity was not available.
Thank you, Mike

Just to let you know, I've reinstalled both .Net 2.0 and .Net 3.0, but I still get the same errors...

Hi Itay,
Thanks for the update. To help us duplicate the problem you're experiencing, I'd like to ask for a few details. Can you outline the steps you took in the appropriate order? Any information reported by the event viewer when the error occurred would be helpful as well. Could you also provide a list of all running processes?
Thanks again.

Hi Merzin
I`ve been away from the computer so I have only just read your latest update.
I uninstalled .net 1 without a problem.
Tried the same with .net 2 windows would not let me do it.The reason given was that it might affect other applications that are installed and referred me to http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q312/5/00.asp went there only to find that it was not available & gave other links so I gave up.
However I tried Win Vista Advisor and it worked ok. So that problem now sorted.
Thanks for that.
What I cannot understand is, if you do not require both .net 2 & .net 3 installed then why didn`t Windows Update uninstall the older versions?

Hello
Seems I found the problem to my never-ending VUA scan. A program called SoundTaxi. I'm not sure if you are familiar with it. It allows you to rip purchased audio files to a new folder, into the format you choose, while at the same time removing the protection. After checking around the internet, I have noticed that others who had this program installed were also having the problem. After uninstalling SoundTaxi and rebooting, I ran the advisor again. It finished in about 5 minutes. I'm happy to say that except for a few minor software issues, which may be fixable, my system is ready for Vista. However, there are many programs similar to SoundTaxi that people may have installed on their systems that could be causing the same problem.

Well it did work ok but it was not until I shut down & rebooted on another day did I find out all was not ok.
Windows would not boot up without an error. I attempted to recover from it but it just got worse.
I had to do a complete reinstall of windows so I was not a happy bunny.
Not only that during the reinstall of all the windows update. Windows update installed the same .net 1 2 etc as it had done before.
Which raises the question If you don`t need 1 or 2 as the latest version replaces them. Then why does windows update tells you need the update?
My advice is don`t uninstall any of the vers. of .net.
After all that hassle I have given up on windows vista advisor and also Vista.
If they can not get an advisor program to work ok then I do not have any faith in them being able to get Vista to work ok.

Attempting to run the Upgrade Advisor it appears to start the scan and comes back and displays "Your system could not be evaluated at this time."
Under system requirements, "We could not scan your hardware at this time. Please uninstall Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and reinstall the latest version."
Attempted to uninstall and reinstall, with the same results. All four VUA* files are being generated, VUA_WinSat* is 0KB.
Everything looks OK in Device Manager. Anyone have any ideas?
------------------------------------ Reply:
I cannot get the scan to run. The only file generated is VUA_WinSat_M-COLE.xml. I have all the right components already installed (.NET 2/MSXML 6). No hardware errors or errors in Error Logs. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have Vista but was also asked by windows installer error help message to look up what appears to be a non existant help page.
I have used downloaded and run the .NET clean up tool
Re-installed .NET framework using SP1 Windows Home Edition installation CD
I have saved the .NET 2.0 redistributable x86 package to a folder on C:\ drive
Windows XP can never find the msi installer to operate the repair function.
I am now getting the message that the version I am installing is incompatible with previous version after installing .NET 3.0, or rather Microsoft Automatic Updater did it.
I had an error message referring to two files in J#, one linked to Adobe reader when using the Microsoft Java tool.
I have also found that since re-installing the .NET framework needed for my radeon 7000 AGP that I am unable to run liveupdate from NIS 2008 and NIS now loads in tray and if I select task bar it just disappears.

I am running the latest Vista Upgrade Advisor (as of 2/28/2008) on a machine that I ran a previous version successfully (several months ago.) The latest version fails with the "encountered an error...If the problem persists, uninstall... install latest..." message.
The most notable change I can recall making to this machine in that time is the installation of the Windows Home Server client software (I did that a few days ago.) It's also possible I did not have .NET 3.0 on the machine previously.
I am seeing these two items in the Application event log for each failure:

Thanks. I know there's a lot of various discussion around the editor and code editor and all. It's part of the Telerik suite of controls and expect some pretty significant changes in the next release. We're switching to their "Prometheus" version which is built around asp.net ajax libraries so and all around perf for the editor should be better. Along with some other requested features that it supports.Rob J, Forums Dev

Yeah, except it doesn't actually retain formatting, which is the point of using a code block in the first place, IMHO.Phil Brammer | http://www.ssistalk.com

I'm not sure whether that's a product of the code editor, or of something else in the process like the string sanitizer. Either way we'll obviously look into whats going on with formatting.Rob J, Forums Dev

Kudos to the developers!
I am quite excited about the quality of Windows Server 2008 and the terrific enhancements made.
It is such a pleasure to work with such a stable and rich platform.
Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the product.

The number of Views should increment when someone looks at a thread using the Preview link. It seems to increment only when the thread is opened directly. But considering how unacceptably dog slow opening threads is, most people will use the previewCHO, HomePage Doctor

I totally agree! I only open a thread completely when I want to reply or when there are multiple pages of posts...otherwise I preview which is most of the time.

ANSI BSTR OLE variants and DAO on Vista SP 1
The value returned for the size of a string is incorrect from the OLE function SysStringByteLen when reading from a Jet database into a COleVariant using DAO with the project set to "Use Multi-Byte Character Set" (ANSI) on Vista SP 1. This likely affects mostly legacy applications.
Below is a C++ code example. Include this in a file as part of a C++ console application with the project set to "Use Multi-Byte Character Set". The results show SysStringByteLen being reported 1 byte larger than it really is on Vista SP 1 (and not on non SP 1 Vista). This was a problem with earlier versions of Windows XP SP 3 also, but it has been resolved for the latest release.
// DaoPlay.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. //
// Setting these higher may make the program not run on older OS's, // but does not affect the SysStringByteLen in XPSP3RC1 problem. #define WINVER 0x0400 // Change this to the appropriate value to target other versions of Windows. #define _WIN32_WINNT 0x0400 // Change this to the appropriate value to target other versions of Windows. #define _WIN32_WINDOWS 0x0400 // Change this to the appropriate value to target Windows Me or later. #define _WIN32_IE 0x0500 // Change this to the appropriate value to target other versions of IE.
