DPM 2016 install fails at "Checking Prerequisites" if running SQL Server 2016 w/ SP1
I'm building a new DPM server running Windows Server 2016. I saw that DPM 2016 officially supports SQL server 2016 as of UR2, so I decided to go with that. After installing SQL Server 2016 w/ SP1 on the DPM server, I tried installing DPM but ran into a problem. At the "Prerequisites Check" stage, the install stopped with an error:
After the DPMSetup.log file proved to be of little help, I started searching for this error online and found this blog post from someone with the same issue. According to that post, the problem only occurs when SQL Server 2016 SP1 is installed, so the workaround is to remove SQL 2016 SP1, install SQL 2016 w/o the SP, install DPM 2016, install Update Rollup 2 for DPM 2016, and then install SP1 for SQL 2016.
I'm probably going to go ahead and go through that hassle so I can continue building this server, but I thought I'd post here to perhaps save someone else from running into this problem or at least help them find info about the issue once they're experiencing it.
Is MS aware of this problem? If so, is there any fix available or forthcoming?
If anyone has a better solution to install DPM 2016 with SQL 2016 SP1, please share it!

Hi,
SQL Server 2016 SP1 was released after DPM 2016 was released and the supported SQL server versions for System Center 2016 are documented here: SQL Server version support For ensured compatibility please do not deviate from the support matrix.

URGENT! help me set up email in outlook (program). 2nd time this is happening
I followed these instructions to try and create the same (internet outlook site) email in the actual program rather than the internet outlook mail.
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Add-your-Outlook-com-account-in-Outlook-for-Windows-642c1902-bdd9-4dc3-abe7-76d60b148b23?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US#step42007_bkmk (clicked on "2010, 2007" then "Set up a supported or an unsupported version of Outlook" then "Which version of Outlook... 2007" Then I read it all)
- Upon starting Outlook 2007 two exact same windows appear saying "The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified. The target principal name is incorrect. View Certificate... Do you want to continue using this server? It's Issued to: *.hotmail.com, Issued by: GlobalSign Organization Validation CA - SHA256 - G2
- My stuff is stuck in the outbox
- Aside of that it's totally empty, nothing from my internet hotmail is in it (inbox, junk, deleted, sent, nothing...)
- clicking on my email and "more settings" and "connection" it's set on to connect via LAN (by default) but should it be like that? I'm using some modem and have only this pc
- I clicked "Test account settings" on the only email account I added and this pops up:
"Send test e-mail message: The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or internet service provider (isp). The server responded: 550 5.7.3 Requested action aborted; user not authenticated"
- I have only telnet clien (not telnet server) windows feature enabled, should it stay like that? I enabled it to test port 25 in cmd.exe, it seemed to be working, I'm not sure however as I had no image to compare it to (to see if it indeed is working), Should that stay enabled or?
Is there any application can help log a whole installation process?

Hi headache-。-,
According to your description, you could try to use the Process Monitor to check. Process Monitor is an advanced monitoring tool for Windows that shows real-time file system, Registry and process/thread activity.

Hope it will be helpful to you

If it is a setup created with Installshield, I start it from a command linie via:
Setup.exe /v"/l*v c:\test.log"
see Setup.exe and Update.exe Command-Line Parameters
if it is an msi, you can use the Windows Installer Command-Line Options
msiexec /i "C:\MyPackage\Example.msi" /L*V "C:\test.log"

Modify imageres.dll.
Just clear UAC icon, make it transparent (and Shortcut overlay at one shot).
A side effect is that admin icon is missing in context menu, where "Run as Administrator" command is. Personally I can live with it!

The blue/yellow shield won't disappear off some application icons. I'm not running it on admin, nor have I turned on UAC's the would enable it. Help please?
I had the same problem with Total Commander. In my case simply changing the icon to something else helped. Then you just change back to the original icon and that's it.
Note: If you have the icon pinned to the start menu or taskbar, you won't be able to see the icon changed immediately. It seems that Windows caches the pinned icons and you can't just refresh them, you need to unpin and pin again (or log off and back in) to see the change.

If you don't want to deal with the annoyances due to security, find a work-around, use a different os like *nix, or buy a mac and use thier software.while some ppl is worried about security (only me lol) others just want to leave it wide open like XP!You are not alone, believe me. While i do believe in security, i find most times that MS usually is late to the ball game. UAC while it's intentions are good, implementation leaves a lot to be desired. If you have a suspect application, flag it and stop it from continuing it's processes. MS's idea is to flag the application and halt all use of the OS until the user deals with the situation. A tad overboard if you ask me.
Calling people whingers and such solves no issue at all. Stating that they have no worries about security doesn't either. Truth be told, microsoft doesn't exactly have the best track record for security if you ask me, but i still use thier products because there are other solutions available.
My advice is this:
If you use MS and have a problem, feel free to ask around for solutions.
If you use MS and can't stand people asking for help, simply don't respond / read the posts.
If you don't want to deal with MS, then simply don't.
It's beginning to get old all these MS huggers fighting the *Nix guys, and the Mac guys, and vice verse, and the normal everyday user gets caught in the crossfire, usually when asking a simple question or trying to find a solution. If you're going to help people help them, if not, and you just want to express your opinion on how THEY should run THEIR pc's, STFU already. It's not your place.
Next time you get the idea to post in a thread telling people how they should operate their computers, think on how you would feel if someone decided to make all of your decisions for you.

While most of the things in Windows 7 are streamlined, the permissions system remains to be cumbersome. Microsoft surely has a lot of work to do in this particular area.

I've dealt with security settings in both a business setting and my own personal network for many years and still get confused from time to time. UAC is a great step forward from where things were. I strongly agree with those who feel some of the settings are far too complicated, unfortunately the only way to fix the issues would be to start back at square one, and in that case forget backwards compatibility with older systems like xp. I think the main topic of this thread got lost however. The issue here isn't about complaining for the sake of complaining. A user just has some icons that are being covered by another icon. This bothers me too. I have no problem with the warning that comes up when I try to run certain programs, (Microsoft is just trying to help us out a little) but like others, my problem is with the fact that I cant remove the overlay icon. It won't kill us, but it's the little things that make products so great.

Hey, I found an easy solution that worked.
Right click the program then click properties. Then click the Compatibility tab at the top.The at the bottom
you will see Privilege Level and under that it will have a checkbox that says Run this program as an admin.
uncheck that (note that if it is grayed out click the Change settings for all users button on the bottom).
This you just change the icon to something random...then back to the original icon. THEN everything is back
to normal.
PS: To those who dont know how to change the icon:
Right click the program click properties then click the Shortcut tab....at the bottom of this it will say Change Icon
The rest is self explanitory.

We don't pay for these "protections" to be tossed at us in our face the way UAC does. I like having a clean and beautiful pc including my desktop. So this UAC is in fact annoying to persons like us. Persons like you like to settle for.... whatever... that doesn't mean others have to. It's not complaining... it's pointing our flaws.... like your comment. =]

Some of us are plenty smart enough but are just sick and tired of these useless functions. UAC is not necessary to facilitate system security unless you have young kids at home whom play with the computer too, but even then, that won't prevent them from accessing anything if they are entitled to administrator privileges through a guest account nor if the administrator did not create a password or allows every user administrator privileges.
Either way, for those of us whom just would rather not see a clunky-looking stupid security shield overlay on their program icons, it should only make sense that Windows would have that option built in.
UAC is virtually useless as a means for hardening system security, unless you have set a password.
Good computing practices along with a layered approach by using additional anti-malware components as well as maintaining an up to date security suite is a far more concerted approach to preventing any sort of attack.
Windows Users should also know what they are doing before they configure their security applications and should definitely employ the latest version of EMET from Microsoft or even better than that---Hitman Pro Alert. If you can understand concepts such as ASLR and HEAP Spray protection among many others, then you'll already know how to harden system security so that any attack-vector is greatly reduced if not eliminated. Again, the point here is that users should know what they are doing first.
Malwarebytes AntiMalware and Zemana Antilogger are also excellent supplemental security programs that all Window users should consider employing in addition to the methods mentioned above. Additionally users should consider using better browsers and be very careful with how much personal information about themselves they actually post online.
Firefox, Cyberfox and Comodo Ice Dragon are all highly secure and fast browsers and should be a part of everyone's cyber-security vocabulary.
Don't click on anything suspicious in your emails and don't visit porn sites! They are riddled with all kinds of malware.
And don't forget about your router's firewall. This is another point of configuration that can be hardened to prevent attack.
At best UAC is a misnomer, at its worst, its a waste of time and a detestable appendage to those of us whom appreciate a smooth and secure desktop experience with our pc's.
Resetting the icon cache by deleting the IconCache.db file located under your local profile folder (%LOCALAPPDATA%) should do the trick.
Kill the Explorer.exe process by clicking on Start button > Hold down Ctrl+Shift & Right Click on empty area in the Start Menu > Click "Exit Explorer".
Click Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys and open Task Manager.
Click File > New Task > then type [cmd.exe] and click OK. This will open the command prompt.
Type del /AH "%localappdata%\iconcache.db"
Press [ENTER]
Type explorer.exe
Press [ENTER]

In response to Mark L. Ferguson's statement: "You won't be able to remove it. It's there as a warning. Your only fix is to remove Win7..."
That is completely bogus information and you should know better than that!
When people post these types of questions to forums---they're not looking for some sort of fascist answer because Microsoft wants to keep their user-base in line with their skewed vision---they're looking for real answers!
STOP perpetuating the corporate quelling of the common people and start listening to us!
The fact of the matter is there are a number of ways to remove the shield overlay from icons, including a well known program called Microangelo.
You can use Script Power Tools to remove individual shield overlays, though this option would be time-consuming.
You can use a resource editor to remove common words from the 'Comments' and 'File Description' fields by first loading the program .exe file into the editor. Check the version strings and look for words that could be interpreted as having the potential to change the system, i.e., tweak, recovery, update, setup, install, etc. If Vista sees any of these words, it will put the overlay on the icon. Simply edit these words out of the Version table in the resources.
You can also use the Command Prompt to remove the shield overlays from icons and start menu items by following these steps:
- Make sure UAC (User Account Control) is disabled by moving its slider to the lowest position.
- Open the Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Type the following commands, pressing [ Enter ] after each line:
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a
Then simply restart your computer.
Please folks, don't listen to liars. All they're interested in is keeping the average user from tweaking their system because Microsoft would rather have full control over you and your machine. It's no longer a (P)ersonal (C)omputer when they've taken that aspect out of the equation.
You have the right to tweak your system how you please (though you should be smart about it and not forsake system security just to make a few modifications), there are many ways to do this.
Microsoft is the Evil Empire and if you are with the resistance---they hate that. Too bad I say---too bad!

Did anyone read the question? "not running it on admin, nor have I turned on UAC's the would enable it. " I have the same issue. I want it there when the program does run on Admin but not when it isn't.
After setting a program to Admin to test something it now will not go away. The Shield is there though all of the Run as Admin settings are clear. I also checked the known RUNASADMIN flags in the registry.

CDO is no longer used on current systems. Use PowerShell and Send-MailMessage.
Without an error code you cannot determine what the error is. There is no bug in CDO.
Port 587 usually requires SSL. It may require TLS 2.1 which is not available to VBScript.

You say "CDO is no longer used on current systems" - This confuses me as (as far as I can tell) it is still current and supported on windows 10, but I will be guided by your experience. What VBScript function can I use in it's place?
You suggest PowerShell and Send-MailMessage. - This again confuses me. Are PowerShell functions available directly in VBScript? Have I missed something? Because access to some of the cool features of some PowerShell commands would be really ace in VBScript. Maybe you could point me in the right direction and I'll go read-up some more.
Or are you suggesting that I have to re-code everything in PowerShell? That would be fairly MAJOR and akin to trying to swap from Visual Basic to C#... Hmmmm
The error reported is:
SMTP Send error
The transport failed to connect to the server.
CDO.Message.1
-2147220973
If I use Microsoft Message Analyzer I can see the session connection process.
With the port set to 25 I see:
Server respond 220
client (CDO) sending EHLO
Server responding 250 with list of commands
then client sending STARTTLS
Client offers TLS 1.2
Server responds with cert etc.. and TLS session is negotiated
(invisible to me)
Client then logs in and sends email
With the port set to 587 I see:
the client (CDO) starting the TLS 1.2 handshake early on
The server then responds 220
It all falls apart from here..
... No EHLO
... No STARTTLS
... Etc.. etc..
(To me) CDO seems to be taking an undocumented approach to handling the session negotiation when the port is set to 587. This (to me) looks like a bug in CDO or an omission in the documentation.

VBScript and WSH are pretty much dead systems and will not be included in future versions of Windows although they will likely be available as an add-on feature for at least one more version.
VBScript is not supported on any new Windows subsystems and cannot access much of what is available on Windows 10 and Windows 2012R2 and later.
CDO has been removed from Exchange systems for security and usability reasons. Only PowerShell will work with Exchange.
Port 587 on your server appears to not support TLS 1.2. It is also likely that CDO does not support all of the elements required for TLS on an alternate port.
To test this use PowerShell to send a port 587 message and you will get a more detailed message.
The CDO message is "Transport failed to connect.". This can be caused by a bad cert on the server. The cert on port 25 is likely good but the port 587 SMTP transport cert is different and is rejected by CDO. CDO and VBScript cannot get the underlying error and the Message Analyzer does not see the clients rejection since the client is just disconnecting with no other response.
Use PS to see that you are getting a cert error then I will show you how to make this work with PowerShell even with a bad cert.

That is a daunting task as I understand VB to a good enough level but PowerShell with it's C# like nature and form is almost like Klingon to me.
Can PowerShell be encoded (like VBScript can)?
Can I install the latest (v5) PowerShell on server 2008r2?
I'll just have to start learning it..
What better than a task/nodule that's needed.

Client push and manual client install not working
I upgraded from System Center 2012 to System Center Configuration Manager 1702. I had been able to push the client to workstations. Now when I try to it doesn't work. I try and get no response of what is happening so I don't know why it is failing. I tried to do a manual install from the workstation (with the command line). Watching Active Directory OU Moves -
The whenCreated attribute makes it very easy to check for "who was created in the last week" stuff like that.
But I do not know of and can not find someone discussing how to check for "who moved OUs in the last week".
Can you point to an article or give me a powershell query that would do something like that?
Just as an example - this is what I am doing for "Created" in the last ?? Days
Get-ADUser -SearchBase "OU=MS,dc=2012AD,dc=local" -LDAPFilter "(&(whenCreated>=20161001000000.0Z)(objectClass=user)(objectCategory=person))" -Properties "whenCreated" |Select SamAccountName,Name,Whencreated
Thanks, Joe

You must enable AD auditing and get the info from the event log.

Thank you all. I really think this is a big problem though - How do you let Microsoft know they are missing something? I would say they need to add whenMoved to their big picture items ( not requiring auditing) - whenChanged is useless because that is tracking everything. whenMoved would only track OU moves.
Again - Thanks
Thanks, Joe

They did at WS2008 Active Directory. They added AD auditing which is far better then a simple timestamp.
You need to take some time off and learn AD.
You can also add a custom attribute and set it to a time when you move items but you lose all other information that auditing provides.

Do you track where objects were moved or just when? Only the last move or keep a history? How would this scale to large deployments with hundreds of thousands of objects? Does this attribute get replicated? The idea doesn't have as simple of an answer as you might think.
Aside from that, I doubt that anyone would spend the resources to develop such a feature because the information is already available elsewhere (auditing).

We understand the concern about the changes made to both the Security Update Guide replacing the numerous KB's of the past. The change is to align with the move from individual updates to the cumulative update process.
The updated process for our Security Update Guide is covered in the recent blog covering this is found at https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/azuresecurity/2017/03/17/security-update-guide-ushers-in-a-new-era-of-microsoft-updates/
The previous KBs have been replaced by the new portal at https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-us/
You can search the related CVE or MS17-* for what is pertaining
In the case of searching the applicable patches for the related OS pease search on the platform such as Windows 7 – this will return what should be seen in WSUS for that platform and then you can see the most recent updates that are applicable via the cumulative update process. You no longer have 100's of updates to approve but rather need to use the most recent cumulative for either security only or full.
What may make this easier for you is to download the Security Update Guide locally so it can be searched and pivoted in the fashion you desire. Most common usage is above to see what is applicable to a specific OS version in x64 etc.

The problem with this is that customers still need to read and assess the impact of those 100's of updates that are rolled up into each cumulative batch. Obfuscating the details of the individual patches isn't encouraging admins to get onboard with swallowing the whole pill and sorting out any problems afterwards. Instead it is creating more work to untangle and identify the pieces so we know what specifically to test or watch out for if patches could negatively affect our environment.

MIM 2016 - Rich Client not redirect to the password registration portal!
Hi all,
I have installed the rich client on the servers which are in the same domain as my MIM server. The password reset is working via the logon screen BUT when the user is not registered before the password reset the rich client doesnt redirect to the password registration portal from the logon screen.
Any idea what should I check or modify to solve this issue?
Thank you in advance.

Hello,
why should the rich client redirect to user to password reset portal from the login screen ?
The user is not authenticated at this time.
The user must register first from the browser after login, that should normally be forced if you want.
So from my point everything works like expected.

Hi Peter,
I thought that if the user not registered for password reset yet the rich client will redirect to the registration portal. But if it is not possible by design I will use as it is.
Thank you for your answer.

If you win, we will sing your praises in blogs and forums, similar to the weekly contributor awards. Once "on our radar" and making your mark, you will probably be interviewed for your greatness, and maybe eventually even invited into other inner TechNet/MSDN circles!
Winning this award in your favoritetechnology will help us learn the active members in each community.
Feel free to ask any questions below, or Join us to the official Microsoft TechNet Wiki groups on facebook.
