Word / Office keeps crashing - Office Home & Student 2016 - Windows 10

This isn't like all the other claims that Word (or other Office programs) crashes upon opening the program or when opening file(s).  I've never had it crash in either of those two scenarios.

I am a technical writer and cycle through dozens of documents on a daily basis.  Word crashes 5-8 times per day, every day, while I am in the middle of working, giving me the "Word has stopped working" error message.  There is no rhyme or reason behind the crashes, it's completely random.  Luckily my AutoRecover is set to save every 60 seconds but it still causes a loss of work in most situations and is a tremendous inconvenience to say the very least.  Additionally, AutoRecover only actually works approx 75% of the time.

To me, it seems that the Windows 10 platform (if you can even call it a PC platform anymore, as it was developed to be a "universal" platform for MS phones, tablets and other devices in addition to PCs) cannot handle the Office programs with as much ease and compatibility as it could with previous versions of Office.  I never had this problem with Win 8 or 8.1 or any older versions of Windows for that matter and I've been using Windows since 1995.

I hope that other Office 2016 / Windows 10 users can contribute to this feedback with their poor experiences with Office 2016 and Windows 10 compatibility so that Microsoft will finally wake up and give us a platform exclusive to PCs once again.  I can't be the only one who is suffering here.

I am having the same problem with Word 16 crashing on my Windows 10 computer. Any results since you last posted? I recently had a problem with my HP computer. I was not able to connect to the internet, and I had to delete, and install programs. And since then my Word is not working properly. I type two sentences and it crashes. I to do a lot of work with Word, and it is very discouraging. Thank you in advance.

Edge pop-up - Notifications and actions: Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows

Currently I'm working on disabling Edge pop-up notifications in Win10 and there are many articles on how to do it -
Settings: System: Notifications & actions: Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows: Off
or
GPO >
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Cloud
Content
: Do not show Windows tips: Enabled

My question is: what is the real impact of this setting? I mean what other tips and tricks does it turn off when disabled, any examples? I feel like disabling Edge pop-up is just one notification in a very large group and disabling them all may significantly worsen user experience of Win10.

Hi Wendal Chen,

Have you tested with a Windows system guest?

Since the issue could be resolved by update the guest, the issue should be more related to the guest. We could try to test with a Windows 10 guest to verify this. We could try the free Windows Evalution version.

Old RHEL 6.x kernel has a bug, which can be exposed when the VM is running on WS 2016, where the reported max supported physical address has 44 bits. On WS 2012 R2, the max physical address has only 42 bits, and the bug is not triggered.

The old kernel needs to pick the patch:
x86: Fix /proc/mtrr with base/size more than 44bits

(https  ://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=d5c78673b1b28467354c2c30c3d4f003666ff385)

or, we can use the "disable_mtrr_trim" kernel parameter to work around the issue (there is not perf issue with this, because Hyper-V always ignores the MTRR setting for conventional RAM of a VM).

Probably a driver issue, or an issue with the revision of windows and the chipset drivers..

I would suggest going to the manufacturers website, with a working computer..

Download the latest drivers for the wireless card..

If not..

Download the chipset drivers and try that..

Why do some users get "You can't get there from here" when attempting to connect to Exchange Online using Outlook 2016?

We are about to rollout Office 2016 to our users.  A test of the deployment package to 10 workstations revealed a problem where five of the ten users in the test pool cannot login to Exchange Online with Outlook 2016.  We are running a hybrid configuration with a single Exchange 2010 machine on-premises.  Our autodiscover DNS entry points to the on-premises server.  We have federated our Active Directory with Office 365 using ADFS 3.0.  On-premises Active Directory is running at Server 2008 R2 functional level for both the forest and domain in our single-domain AD forest.

After running the Office 2016 deployment package via SCCM, five users are prompted to enter their account names and passwords, after which a dialog box appears with "You can't get there from here" and tells the users they are not using domain-joined machines or "permitted devices."  All of these users can login to Skype for Business and SharePoint Online from their machines, and can get to their email using OWA.  The other five users had zero issues with Office 365 apps or authentication to Office 365 after the upgrade.  I had the users switch machines, and found that the login behavior follows the user, i.e., all of the ten test workstations will not allow the five users affected with this problem to login.  The five users that did not have an issue after the upgrade can go to any of the 10 test workstations and authenticate successfully with Outlook 2016.  A thorough search of AD properties has failed to find a difference between the accounts that can login with Outlook 2016 and those that can't.  If the users with the login problem go to machines still running Outlook 2013, they can login to Exchange Online without issue.  All machines in the scope of this exercise are domain-joined laptops, desktops or Surface Pros running Windows 10 build 1607.

Deleting the Outlook profile and re-creating the profile does not solve the problem.  The new profile wizard stops at the server authentication step, prompts the user for credentials and then displays the "You cant' get there from here" dialog.  Since I have no idea why this problem affects only some users, I cannot develop a remediation plan so the Office upgrade can continue.

Any help appreciated.

Have you set up a hybrid configuration?  That is the mechanism that would allow the Exchange 2010 server to know that mailboxes are in Exchange Online.

Just curious..

Do you have different Group policies set for different users? (OU's)

If you do, what happens if you move the user into the one of the other Users, working OU and GPupdate the User on the machine with the issue.. does the issue still happen?

Have you checked to make sure it's not a security permissions issue?

Do you possibly have Outlook Auto Discovery set to only allow local servers and not the online system? (This is configurable in Group Policy, with the Outlook policies loaded)

IP Cameras and VLC scripting?

Hello all,

I am currently using a very basic .bat script to open 3 VLC player windows, in order to show some IP camera feeds for individual desktop machines at different sites.  The different sites use different cameras and views, but they are all essentially the same.  I have yet to be able to figure out how to set these up so the users can move the windows freely, and/or close them out entirely, without having to do a 3 finger salute.

My question is, does anyone have, or know of a script for opening IP camera feeds for viewing on a desktop, in a way that they can be arranged and/or closed when needed?  Thanks!

Removal of own sxs assemblies from winsxs

I'm a software developer and am frustrated by the lack of documentation on winsxs. We produce a large suite of applications and in turn these have a considerable number and considerable disk cost in shared assemblies (not dot net). We use sxs manifest maker from maze computer to build msi installers for our shared dependency packages and use these as feature prerequisites in our main installers. Over time we leave behind a trail of mess as on windows 7 our obsolete components from older versions get left behind in winsxs despite being uninstalled correctly. It seems that the policy here is to leave them forever. During uninstall the relevant IAssemblyCache UninstallAssembly method is called and a subsequent call to QueryAssemblyInfo (in a test program) returns NOT FOUND as expected. The files however remain forever and are never scavenged or cleaned up. This is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE for us and our customers! Now we only uninstall assemblies that are no longer in use and that have been superseded. So the question here is 1) Is there a recommended way to remove? 2) If not then are there any adverse effects of (after successful uninstall) running a process (under SYSTEM account) to clean up the files themselves? This is what we'll have to consider in order to resolve if windows itself is somehow incapable. As background I would like to state that we also use private assemblies but these have to be located in a subfolder beneath the folder containing the referencing application which means that such a component can't be shared by two or more separately installed applications so when sharing is required a private assembly (particularly where its disk cost is very high) is not exactly suitable. To me it seems as though use of winsxs assemblies is being discouraged by covert means of poor documentation. There does not seem to be an easy way other than SxS to share DLL's between multiple applications and benefit from the versioning features so this is what we use but we now want to address the adverse effects caused by the fact that we are leaving a trail of wasted disk space behind us.

1024kb log files

I recently installed Exchange 2010 in a new domain.  created a new databse and placed it on a 400Gb drive (our user count is 25).  I was reviewing the server on Monday and noted that I had virtually no disk space left.  After investogating I found that the log file directory under my Mailbox drectory was cranking out 1Mb log files constantly, loading up the drive and killing performance.  I can't review the files, althought they report as txt files, they appear to be more binary in nature.  I cleanded out the "garbage" so that I could get some perfomrance back.  How do I veiw these files to determine the issue and how if at all can I stop these if it is "normal".  I did not a setting for circular loggin when I was looking.

Throughly confused and would appreciate any help at all.

If your drive is likely to fill up before you can get the backup going then you should enable circular logging to prevent the database from dismounting.  This feature purges log files once the have been written to the database and is not normally recommended for production use.

You can enable this by going to the properties of your database (in the Exchange Management Console -> Organisation Configuration -> Mailbox) and check the box on the Maintenance tab.

Remember to turn this off when your backups are ready otherwise your incrementals will fail.

Vlook Up always brings the first result from a column.

How I can get the second result.

For example, with look up K01-01-01-01, if I do vlookup usually i'll find A76/ C804265

How I can get NSG21A/ GM3149, means the Second Result?

is there any way via Match/ Index or any other function?

Array-enter (enter using Ctrl-Shift-Enter) a formula like

=IFERROR(INDEX(C:C,SMALL(IF($B$1:$B$100=$E$2,ROW($B$1:$B$100)),ROW(A1))),"")

where your VLOOKUP was

=VLOOKUP(E2,B:C,2,False)

I.E., C has your values of interest, B holds the values you want to match against, and E2 has the key value.

How to solve broken OLE links in Project 2010

Hi everyone,

This is more an answer then a question :-). To the moderators, feel free to re-allocate it to whatever it fits better in the forum.

I just felt I had to share a solution for this problem that seems not to have a final solution published in internet... until now.

Here is the description of the problem: you copy a information, let's say a date from Excel, and want to paste it in Project with the "Paste link" command, so if you update it on Excel it also updates on Project.

This is known as "OLE link". It works. But not all the time.

It happens, usually due to a data corruption, this link breakes and your Project loses the updates.

Now, for the final solution for the broken OLE links, please follow this steps:

1) Add the "Edit Links" button into your Project 2010 ribbon - Google it, you will find plenty of sites explaining how to do it.

2) Open your Project and click on the "Edit Links" button. You will see a list of all the links you did, among them the 'Unavailable' ones - those are the broken ones. Now you simply select one or all of them and click the button "Update now". DONE! Project will fix them for you!

Now, there is a catch... sometimes ALL the links appear as 'Unavailable'. What you do is, open and close the origin file (Excel in this example) and do the same on the Project too. Repeat this until you see on Project that at least some of the links are listed as 'Automatic' - that means Excel and Project are talking to each other. So you repeat #2 procedure and it will be fine.

Hope it helps.<o:p></o:p>

Best,

Cristiano

Cristiano,

Paste links are really the devil in disguise. They look so enticing and creating them is very easy. The problem however is that they are very fragile and many things can cause them to become corrupt. Users don't always realize that a link has two parts, a source and a destination. When there is a change that impacts the link it is important to save that change at both the source and destination file, otherwise link fragments will be created, hence one of the reasons for the "unavailable" note. Other actions that can negatively impact the link structure are: renaming, moving, overwriting or saving off any of the files in the link structure. The link path can easily be lost or duplicated, hence another reason for the "unavailable" note. And, attempting to operate the linked files over a network can also result in loss of path as networks are often not totally stable or reliable.

The best option for paste links is to not use them. There are better ways to share data that are much more stable.

John

Thank you Cristiano,

I had been searching for this answer for a considerable time before I came across your post. I'd almost given up, you saved me considerable frustration.

Thanks for sharing.

And BTW John, if you have 'better ways' perhaps you could take a lead from Cristiano and share them rather than just putting down efforts of good intent!......

------------------------------------
Reply:

Troy66,

Okay, here are a couple of "better ways".

1. Use an import map. That will bring Excel data into Project. Once the Excel to Project field mapping is properly created the map can be saved and used each time an update is needed. This process only works with static data (i.e. not timescaled). The updating is not dynamic but it doesn't open up the file to link structure corruption as paste links do.

2. Create a cross-application macro. Similar to an import map but has much greater flexibility. Any type of data, static or timescaled, task, resource, and assignment data along with calendar or other project level data can be transferred. Again, updating is not dynamic but a custom button on the ribbon can be used to effect the transfer.

The latter is my preferred process.

Hope this helps.

John

Slowest bottleneck in SQL Standard 2016 in creating indexes: is SQL Standard. MaxDOP 1 venting.

On several modern systems (32core xeon) with SQL Standard 2016 they all share one bottleneck: slow index creation. The indexes are always single threaded.

I was excited to test out the new compression features of SQL Standard 2016 however they are extremely limited by the bottleneck of "1 logical core" aka maxdop 1 for creating indexes in SQL Standard. The overhead from compression does not have room on the single core.

Wishlist items... why is SQL Standard still limited to:

a. 128GB of ram (instead of modernized to 256GB or 512GB?)

b. single threaded index creation (standard would be great with maxdop 4 or something better than 1)

c. 24 cores instead of the common standard of 32 (even more in 2018 when modern chips start standardizing 32 cores on a single socket).

I'm just curious other peoples' opinions, to me these seem like bottlenecks that cause people to move to free/cheaper alternatives than Microsoft's product rather than to "the more expensive enterprise" version.

I submitted a few feature requests. So far sql 2016 is brilliant in giving us new tools that help us prepare for Enterprise level projects (compression, BPE, memory tables etc) however the ram and single threaded index limitations keep things archaic to 10 year old standards. The new features would let Standard users test the waters/prepare for enterprise projects of larger scales while also utilizing the same features in their Standard servers. At several hospital systems I have worked for, 90% of the servers (100+) are using SQL Standard while the main product (EHR) is on a competitor product (AIX, or a sql alternative).

Wishlist:

allow parallel processing for indexes in SQL 2016 Standard:

https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/Feedback/Details/3135989

Increase Ram Memory Limit in SQL 2014/2016 Standard to 256GB and Core support:

https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/Feedback/Details/3135172

example:

a. create a table with 30,000,000 records (a customer's claims data)

-1 minute at 500-1000mbs (use maxdop 8)..

b. create a clustered index , even if presorted on member'id and claimid, 15-45 minutes... at 10mbs with 1 core.

Disk io goes underutilized as well since it is limited to maxdop 1 and is using minimal resources. It is the most "limiting" feature of SQL Standard. In 3 separate processes that are 4 hours each, 3.5 hours is the index creation time on several steps that are joined together in a final table.

Just out of curiosity - what is the more prevalent wait stat while generating this index?

------------------------------------
Reply:

table in non-tempdb:

I do not see any at the moment . However sql standard maxes out one core for index creation (limitation)... and io appears to be lower during the creation of clustered indexes (10-40mbs)

general wait types: (async network io only occurs when unoptimized 3rd party clients pull a massive amount of data over the network which is rare)

------------------------------------
Reply:

Can you clear wait stats and then run your index creation statement and then examine them again.

DBCC SQLPERF('sys.dm_os_wait_stats', CLEAR)

It does look like it is cpu bound. Also what does this return?

select * from sys.configurations where name like 'max degree of parallelism'

It does look like SQL Server can use multiple threads in index creation statements in the Enterprise version. if this is SQL 2016, perhaps this might be available on the standard edition with SP1 applied.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191292%28v=sql.105%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

------------------------------------
Reply:

Agreed, it is CPU bound in SQL Standard (also maxdop bound to 1).  From the article you linked "Parallel index operations are only available in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise."

a. Maxdop is 8 (numa, hyperthreading, 32 cores)

b. SQL Standard is limited to 1 core / maxdop 1 for all index functions and I believe update statement.

name minimum maximum config_value run_value
max worker threads 128 65535 0 0

c. adding maxdop 8 or any override to an index create statement is ignored by SQL standard.

d. cost parallelism threshold 50

after clearing wait stats: (similar results every few seconds)

The previous "cxpacket waits" are from when anytime a query is not maxdop 1 in the previous screenshot (defaulted to 8).

I agree with you, Microsoft is five to ten years behind reality on their licensing concepts.

The old socket licensing was obsolete, but core licensing is almost worse.  Cores are now cheap to buy, but they do not provide the linear increase in throughput and yet Microsoft licensing pretends they do.

Microsoft - and particularly SQL Server - still assumes you are running departmental applications with very light loads and even lighter server resources.  This is just not the right model for anything done in the last ten years.

I'd suggest there be just three server levels, small, medium, and unlimited.  Medium could support 512gb RAM and 32 cores, RAM doesn't cost anything these days and it's silly for Microsoft to pretend otherwise.

I understand they want to maximize revenue, and they want to charge proportionately to the value they provide, which can be very large in some cases, but they need to stay up to date on the realities of server hardware or else they end up denying their entire customer base the benefits that are otherwise available.

(and of course your IT management tends to be behind the curve too - I can tell you stories ... which include some massive failures due almost directly to these issues)

Josh

Curently, we are using Server 2016 TP5 in our test environment. I was looking in VMM for a way to change the encapsulation protocol from GRE to VXlan, but I can't seem to find it. Is it available yet? If so, how can I use VXLan instead of GRE? If not, will it only be available in the final product?

Thank you!

Hi Alexis,

Yes, we do support VXLAN Encapsulation in our new Software Defined Network (SDN) Stack with Windows Server and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2016. In fact, VXLAN is the default encapsulation type. There is currently no UI surface through which to change the encapsulation for a virtual network.

More details on SDN and VMM-based deployments can be found at these links:

Thanks for the links, but are they accessible from the internet? I can't seem to reach them.

Also do you know how I could switch to VXlan? I've done a virtual network, without a network controller, and the protocol I was sniffing was Gre. Where could I find the command to switch the protocol?

Hi there. I have exactly the same questions as Alexis.

If you use your favorite search engine to search for the text of each of the posted links, instead of trying to use the link itself, you will find the articles on TechNet.  The (overzealous) Microsoft person posted links to Microsoft-internal sites.

For example, the first link can be found at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center-docs/vmm/manage/deploy-a-network-controller-using-vmm

Hi There,

I am using System Center 2016 - VMM to deploy SDN on to 2016 hosts and guests. When I setup tenant networks I am not seeing VXLAN encapsulation. I am seeing only GRE Encapsulation. What could be issue? VXLAN is supposed to be default. Why am I not seeing VXLAN packets instead of GRE packets.

Thanks

Prasad

Yu might want to take your questions on VMM configuration to a VMM forum.  Here is a link to the general forum for VMM - https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=virtualmachinemanager

This forum is basically 'dead', as it has been replaced by the Windows Server General forum.  And, since that is for general system administration questions on Windows Server, and your question is about configuration within VMM, you will find more VMM experts in a VMM forum.

MIM Config Documenter tool now availiable on GitHub

I am happy to announce that the Identity Community Projects team has published the MIM Config Documenter tool to the Microsoft GitHub Organization as an open source community project.
MIM configuration documenter is a tool to generate documentation of a MIM / FIM synchronization or service installation.
The goal of this project is to:
• Document deployment configuration details for the MIM / FIM solution!
o Including MIMWAL Workflow definitions
• Track any configuration changes you have made since a specific baseline!!
• Build confidence in getting things right when making changes to the deployed solution!!
You can find the project code, releases, and documentation at:  https://github.com/Microsoft/MIMConfigDocumenter

I have tried this.

I have several questions.

First of all the documentation is very confusing. Not everyone has english as first language.

Secondly there are no binaries at least none in the MIMConfigDocumenter-1.17.0610.0.zip download. Lots of .cs files, one .sln file and that is all. No guidance how to build the .dlls and .exe

Finally when you figure out how to get the MIMConfigDocumenterCmd.exe and MIMConfigDocumenter.dll built it crashes when trying to create the report.

Obviously, you downloaded the wrong zip for v1.17.0610.0. You downloaded source code zip. And the version you are actually running v1.17.0522.0 was reported to have that issue. Download the correct zip for the latest version that fixes it and many more.

Thank you. It was our error, the latest sources compiled OK (only 68 warnings!) and work well.

One problem, we get a nice report but we also receive several errors in the ErrorLog.

They are all the same kind of error. An example is:

MIMConfigDocumenterLog Error: 40000 : MIMConfigDocumenter (1.17.0610.0): 06/29/2017 09:59:38.6281: Column 'Bound Object Type, Bound Attribute Type' is constrained to be unique.  Value 'User, Company' is already present. First, again, you can choose to compile the source code if there is concern with downloading the precompiled exe or you can use the precompiled exe available for downloaded at https://github.com/Microsoft/MIMConfigDocumenter/releases. It's really up to you. If you do choose to compile the source code, then the familiarity with Visual Studio and C#.NET is expected. Hence no instructions on how to compile the source code.

The "Binding Summary" section table expects display name combination for 'Bound Object Type, Bound Attribute Type' to be unique. Looks like you have duplicates for User - Company and such... You can check the "Bindings" section and see why they are duplication. If there is any genuine reason for them to be duplicate, you can ignore the error. If not, you remediate your FIM/MIM deployment.

If there is any genuine reason for them to be duplicate and hence this is to be treated as a bug, please log an issue on the GitHub.
