Is it possible to prevent SP13 from creating default.aspx pages in every single subsite, because these pages don't exist on my current websites in SP07/SP10?
I currently end up with a problem when migrating to SP13.
I am currently migrating websites from SP07/SP10 to SP13.
Issue:
The problems is when migrating to SP13, SP13 create default.aspx pages in every single subsite,
which can't be deleted unless you assign a different page from parent of child directory.
Questions:
1. Is it possible to prevent SP13 from creating default.aspx pages in every single subsite, because these pages don't exist on my current websites in SP07/SP10. I would like to migrate as is. These default.aspx pages are actually empty pages, except they're containing a page layout and some links. Please note that the amount of webpages will double after migration due to these default.aspx pages.
2. What options do I have here and how does this impact SEO?
Sofar I thought about 2 options I have:
1. Assigning different parent/child pages in every single subsite where SP13 creates default.aspx pages per subsites in order to finally delete default.aspx per subsite.
2. Keeping default.aspx pages in every single subsite and put a 301 redirect to the appropriate destination. (Might be tricky for visitors), unless you prevent search engines from indexing these pages using robots.txt but that might be a big job for SEO.
Hope to hear other technical options I might have and please provide me the feedback on impact on SEO.
Hope to year from you soon!

Webmaster PR

Hi Alex, Thank you for your reply.
We are currently using ShareGate to migrate websites from http to https.
We also use site collections to keep track of all sites. We have a team that actually do the migration. For further question please specify them so I can provide the right details.
In addition the focus is "as is" migration with small improvements like the https taken into account.
We can extract all page URL's before migration and URL's after migration and see the SEO action to implement 301 redirects after migration.
Hope I provided you the information you'll need.

Hi Alex,
In addition:
Not every subsite contains a default.aspx page in our current situation (SP07/SP10).
After migration to SP13:
Eg: domainname.com/cars/mercedes/default.aspx
In the location above a default.asp will be genereated under: domainname.com/cars/ (default.aspx withing directory cars). This will be done for all subsites (folders).
I think this situation is not wanted, because this will triple/quadriple the amount of default.aspx pages that don't make sense.
Preferable just want to have the setup of directories and pages available in SP13.
QUESTION:
Should we change the way of how to migrate?
Could you describe the way how to perform it?
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Webmaster PR

DHCP client hostname (Option 12) encoding
Hello,
Recently I have been trying to save list of hostnames from captured DHCP packets. I have encountered problem, when DHCP client is saving unknown format of hostname. It happens, when account have different character set than allowed in RFC 1035 (RFC is mentioned in DHCP standard RFC 2132 ). For example invalid hostname is "Lukáš-PC".
Undefined characters are saved in packets as these unsigned char values:
á = 160 š = 231I haven't found any relation between these values and known encodings.
So is there any way to convert values back to original ?
Thank you,

Configure RDWeb and MFA with soft token
Hi
We are trying to secure RD Web site with Azure MFA on Windows 2012 R2. We are successfully able to configure it with Phone, text or call option.
How can I configure it with soft token? If user is configured with token on MFA, RD Web gets access denied.
Appreciate any help.

ADFS claim rules question : Confused
Hi All,
I'm configuring SSO between a SaaS application and my organization via ADFS.
In the application configuration page, i have to put an SSO identity for each user that will use SSO.
Example : For the user "Samir FARHAT", i type s.farhat@org.com
The part confusing me now, is that the application documentation says that :
----------------------
Use field SSO identity to identify the user against the Identity Provider. Technically, the content of the field
must match the value of "urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:1.1:nameidformat:unspecified" NameID in the
SAML response
----------------------------------------
Now, what should i to to do on the ADFS part ?
AFIAK, i have to configure a 'Transformation rule' on the Claim rule to meet the "urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:1.1:nameidformat:unspecified" ?
But how, can someone help or clarify me it ?

Microsoft to finalize Windows 10 this week
http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/6/8899919/microsoft-windows-10-rtm
Once Microsoft has finalized Windows 10 this week the company will continue to work on bug fixes ready for the July 29th release date. Windows 10 testers will get a copy of the final version first, and the company will be rolling out the OS to the public in waves starting on July 29th.

A direct quote from the Windows blog you linked to in your original post:
"Starting on July 29, we will start rolling out Windows 10 to our Windows

slowly scaling up after July 29th. Each day of the roll-out, we will

TAGS in Windows 10
Hello! Can say that I'm Windows power user and I always has wondered is there a possibility to add option for taging documents and folders in Windows 10. I do not mean colour tags like in OS X Yosemite (that's stupid), i mean word-tags. I thing a "General" section in "Properties" or new section named "Tags" again in "Properties" will be suitable place for this feature. I have to say that, in my opinion, will be really useful option, especially for business-users, who are working with big databases. Also tags will be really helpful for sorting photos by a home-users.
Please, think about my concept. I hope that I will have opportunity to use tags in final version of Windows 10.
Best regards, PenDotInk, current user of Windows 7 x64.

IIRC Windows XP had such a facility that would work for arbitrary
files by storing information in NTFS alternate streams, however that's
not particularly useful as the information is lost when the file is
moved to a file system that doesn't have an equivalent facility.
Most media files (jpg for instance) already have meta data. Select a
JPG, display it's properties and use the Details tab - you should be
able to enter your own text in the Comments field. The big problem
with such facilities are the different "standards" for them :(

Yeah, Dave, I found that there is an option to add tags in Windows 7 and Windows 8/.1 too, but what really annoys me is that the feature works with only few file extensions. Folders are totally forgotten. All I asking for is more universality in new Windows 10. :/>The big problem with such facilities are the different "standards" for them :(

As I pointed out, in older OS's MS did provide such a facility, but it
had severe limitations making it not that useful in practice.
Given that experience, and the fact that there's nowhere to store such
metadata in many file formats, I can't see how MS can achieve it.

That is definitely already there. However, I think you should also look at activating the File Explorer Details pane (mutually exclusive with the Preview pane unfortunately). Win-E, Alt-V D. Other than Pictures one good example that I have is looking at your IE Favorites that way.

I like the database tagging model, could create wiki functionality..

So yr computer file system itself can become a wiki... killer feature.M$ would just have to solve tags breaking, upon moving the tagged files.

Your Path as Windows 10 Insider
From what I have read as an "Insider" you will be upgrade to Windows 10 when released later this month. However, suprise, they say your locked in as a insider and have to take the future developement builds after the release date as they continue to develop for Windows 10" The article also states you can revoke that just by loading back in your licensed version of Windows 7, upgrade to Windows 10 outside the windows insider path and then you won't be locked into insider program for life. Ayone else hearing this?
It's been aweful buggy for me to contiune on the insider path of updates after release.

Microsoft is not good in explaining in plain simple English.
Gabriel Aul tried to clarify the issue and he had to do it 3 times. It's still unclear to some.
To answer your question :
If you installed Insider Preview ( aka Win 10 Technical Preview ) over a qualifying Windows such as Win 7 or Win 8.1, you are entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10 RTM.
You do NOT have to roll back to your original operating system which is Win 7 in your case. You are good to go. You will get the free upgrade to Win 10 RTM through Windows Update.
However, you have a choice to stay with the Insider Preview and continue to receive new builds. In this case, you just do nothing.
excerpt : Source
"I want to continue as a Windows Insider!" If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You're already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you'll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you'll have received a new one. Since we're continuing the Windows Insider Program you'll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we'll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well.

Hopefully, I have done a little better job explaining that Microsoft.

Downloaded Windows 10 Technical Preview Enterprise Edition (64 bit) image file from:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview.
Download time < 15 minutes. File size 3.888GB.
Download was smooth and apparently error free.
Transfer of OS to USB Memory Card
Rufus 1.4.10 application program was used to create a bootable USB Memory Card and to install the OS on this card. (http://rufus.akeo.ie/). The process was easy and was error free.
Install Windows 10 on the Dell 11 Pro.
A Dell factory backup was done to a bootable USB memory card. (Dell does not ship the Venue with any OS or other software on external media).
The Rufus generated USB Memory Card was inserted into the Venue's USB 3.0 port.
Windows Explorer was used to display the USB files and to select and execute "Setup".
The Windows 10 installation asks if one wishes to keep the existing application programs, drivers and other current files. The recommended answer is YES. This was an unusual experience for me because the typical requirement is to do a clean install from a bootable device that is read on computer power up. It was very nice to be able to preserve the current application programs and drivers and to do the installation from "inside of" the old OS.
The installation process was quick, there were no error messages or any obvious problems.
There was no requirement for user responses during the process.
The first tasks on initial start-up of the OS are to check for updates and to provide logon information.
The update requirement depends on an operational connection to the Internet. In our case, the connection is by WiFi and there would normally by no way to initiate this without having been logged on to a running version of the OS. It is a typical "cart before the horse" problem. Fortunately, it is possible to defer this step which is what we did.
The next problem is creating the logon. Dell's default on display intensity is dimmer than is desirable and, at least on this tablet, it is difficult to see the contents of some of the logon fields. You cannot change the display intensity until after a successful logon. The "CAPTCHA" step is especially difficult and annoying. The dim display makes it tough to recognize the alphanumeric characters which may be on angles, overlapping, indistinct and of varying intensity. One has to guess about some of the characters, to change to different CAPTCHA selections and to repeatedly attempt a logon. My recommendation is not to use CAPTCHA in any part of the software.
Microsoft encourages the use of a "Microsoft system wide" user name and password. There are some advantages to this, but, as others have pointed out, it has some risks.
Touch screen virtual keyboards are infamous for problems with accidental selections of adjacent keys and unintended character repetitions. Fortunately, the Venue 11 has a large sized virtual keyboard and there is less chance of key selection errors than is true with the small sized displays. The Venue does has problems with the unintended character repetitions. All of this causes difficulties with initial password setups in which the entered data are hidden with stars or other characters and one also usually has to enter the new password twice. A few software developers have started offering users a check box option for display of the entered password information. This is really helpful for reducing the number of times that one might need to enter a new password and then repeat it for confirmation.
Initial Experience with Windows 10
There have been no known problems with missing or incompatible drivers. I don't know if any drivers were updated between 8.1 and 10 except that there was a somewhat lengthy automatic install of a new driver for the cellular modem. This device and its software have not been evaluated as yet. I do not know if the software enables regular cellular voice operations. It is unlikely that it enables the automatic transfer of voice communications between WiFi and Cellular networks, as is available from some vendors.
Access to the Control Panel, Command Prompt and other administrative functions is now possible via the "Start" icon display once one realizes that you need to scroll the display fully downward and to the right in order to see the "administrative" icons.
In spite of the relatively large Dell Venue display (10.8 inches), there are still many fields that are small and/or are too close together to be reliably selected by finger touch. Some of these fields cannot be selected at all by finger touch. The problem can be reduced by increasing character and display sizes and by the use of an Active Stylus. Use of a mouse plugged into the USB port is a temporary solution if one doesn't have a stylus.
There have been many instances of failures to respond to icon selections by repeated finger presses. The reason for this behavior is unknown. The problem can be temporarily cleared by a soft restart.
In some fields, autofill correctly displays a list of choices, but the application program crashes with an unknown error message if you touch select one of the choices.
There is a hardware "Windows button icon" that is located on the front rim of the computer, halfway between the right and left sides of the unit. This is a very poor location because it is easy to accidentally press the button while holding the computer in one's hand. The button should be recessed and should be located on a side of the computer.
There should be a mechanical button to increase or decrease screen intensity. There should be a user selectable option to control ambient light regulated screen intensity.
This isn't necessarily a Windows 10 issue, but there has been a recent marked increase in advertisements that are added to the results of Google and Yahoo searches, e-mail traffic and other Internet transactions. The latest twist is that unless one accepts an advertisement's initial suggestion - usually by clicking on a YES or OK icon - then the display is locked and you cannot close it short of ending the task or doing a soft reset. There is no choice to Cancel. Selecting the X close icon or close on a drop down box doesn't close the advertising Window display.

SQL server 2014 - Memory optimized tables not releasing memory after committing transaction and server restart
I am new to Memory optimized tables. I have gone through the documentation available here about Garbage collection:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn643768.aspx
The article states in the end:
After a user transaction commits, it identifies all queued items associated with the scheduler it ran on and then releases the memory.
When I run a long transaction which inserts about 1.5 GB of data the SQL server has the memory occupied which is expected.
But I cannot find a way to reclaim/release this memory. Even after I restart the SQL service, it re-occupies the same amount of memory as before.
I want to know whether it is normal or am I doing something wrong here?

Not sure how do you see this is a bug, you configured a recipient in the workflow and than deleted that user and now the workflow is not working anymore?
Or are you unable to delete this user from the workflow is that what you mean with a bug?
Is it possible to remove the reference to the user through the advanced menu ?

The user is actually removed from the workflow (at least from the gui)
Well, the workflow should not fail imo, just generate an error message and then continiue.

Go to "Advanced view" --> Extended attributes --> XOML. Copy the XOML to notepad to read is more easily and check if there is still a reference or GUID to the deleted user.

Still think it's a bug. Especially since the Notify WF still had a user it could send an email to. The same thing does not happen if one of the DisplayedOwners is removed from a Group.

For what it's worth I think there is a bug that needs to be logged. IMO the bug is that the notification activity fails with a bad recipient. It should only fail if it cannot deliver the mail. If three recipients are configured and two are valid it should succeed. Raise a premier incident and ask for this issue and ask for a bug to be raised.
IMO the lack of clean-up isn't a bug, but is an issue for operations folk. The same is true of criteria filters. If you dereference a set or group in a group or set criteria and delete the referenced resource the filter of the resource that dereferences isn't cleaned up. Luckily the set computation code handles such an eventuality accordingly, i.e. if the operator is AND you get null; if it's OR you still get the rest of the result set. This has been a headache for me with no easy fix.

Was this ever fixed? I just had this issue in FIM 2010 R2 4.1.3599.0
In the Normal view I have 1 email address and 11 references to a person/user object
In the advanced XOML view I have 1 email address (same as normal view) and 12 GUID's as references to a person/user object.

IE is a common one, especially if you have installed 3rd party add-ons and activex controls, try to find out if any specific sites are causing it to crash.
outlook can be several things:
- using cached mode
- using OST and PST files and not excluding them from AV scanning
- email archiving during the day
- search indexing - this is a killer in most environments
- 3rd party add-ons
without looking at the dumps it's not easy to guess what's going on with the crashes. suggest you fully patch the servers OS and Office components
have the latest RDP v8.1 client installed for all the clients

First of all thank you for the replay.
Second, We do not use any cache mode or pst /ost. only online exchange.
We do not use any 3rd extentions on outlook.
I have already patched the servers and have the latest RDP 8.1 client.
What do you mean archiving ?
What do you mean by Search index ? Where can I find it ? how can I disable it?
Anyway, it does not explain the fact that the errors has started at the same date ( 13/05/2015 ) on all of the servers...Till that date everything worked like a charm!
It looks like some update causes this beheviour but I have uninstalled all the related updates installed that day.
Again, it seems that it has nothing to do with the outlook itself because the same error occurs on IE as well.
I Guess it has something with the OS but Can't find it :-(
Any other Ideas?
Thanks again

in the control panel you should have an icon for indexing. not sure how it works if you're using outlook online though
you may need to switch to cache mode if the server is unable to keep up with online mode

Lync 2011 for Mac launch script help.
We've got a big problem in our company with Mac users turning their Lync off, despite the policy being to keep it running. I want to make a Dell Kace script to launch it, and I have one that mostly works, but not the same as clicking the icon. If a user clicks the icon it launches Lync and logs them in, no problem, if I launch it via the script it comes up to the login window demanding a password instead of just launching. I can't seem to find any information on command line options for Lync 2011, does anyone have any suggestions? The script is below.
#!/bin/bash sudo -u `who | grep console | awk '{print $1}'` open /Applications/Microsoft\ Lync.app exit exit - Changed type Eason Huang Wednesday, July 8, 2015 2:55 AM
UAC breaks modern applications
UAC set to "Do not dim my desktop" (one notch below default) causes all Modern applications to stop responding after those applications attempt to show a UAC dialog under some conditions.
1. Set UAC to "Do not dim my desktop"
2. Using the modern Settings app, browse to Update and Security > Activation
3. Click the "Change product key" button
In this scenario the settings app will stop working entirely... Another example:
1. Set UAC to "Do not dim my desktop"
2. Using Microsoft Edge, download a registry file (e.g. From popular tutorials: Tenforums.com - This PC 'Folders' - Add or Remove in Windows 10)
3. Click the Run button in the Edge browser when the download completes.
In this scenario the browser will stop working entirely.
You have to terminate the consent.exe process to regain control of the modern application... It's a very annoying bug that has remained in the insider builds for quite a while and needs to be fixed!
Thanks,
dmex

Well dmex,
Thanks for your sharing.
I can confirm that the Settings Change Product Key part would be freezed if UAC is set to "Do not dim my desktop". On both build 10159 and 10162. The other UAC options seems to work as expected.
For the Microsoft Edge part, it would also be freezed as described, the workaround is to end the task "Consent UI for administrative applications" under Task Manager.

Hi Michael,
I previously submitted feedback using the Windows Feedback Tool however considering the length of time this bug has remained in the Insider previews I figure it was ignored.
Thanks, hopefully the issue is fixed before RTM :)
