SCCM 1606 | Pxe boot issue only with UEFI Surface Pro 3 and Pro 4 | Dhcp and Sccm in VMware on HP Blade c7000 with Virtual Connect
Dear Sirs,
I'm investigating a challenging problem.I have a brand new Sccm server 1606 which replaced the 2012 R2 environment.
I have two dhcp server 2012 R2 with the adress pool replication.
I have both all the servers, dhcp, sccm living on a vSphere 5.5 (can not remember the update version).
Everything installed on hardware hp c7000 blade with fatastici virtual connect.
All interconnected with the access and juniper datacenter switches.
The client environment is made up of desktops, laptops, surface pro 3 and 4 surface pro.
The current situation is the following:
a) desktop PCs with integrated graphics do PXE smoothly
b) Laptops with integrated card make PXE smoothly
c) Surface Pro 3 are PXE, but it works the first time on 10
d) Surface Pro 4 are PXE, but it works the first time on 10
What I tried to do?
First thing ...
I tried on laboratory (vmware fusion on my Apple) I had used to learn how to install Sccm 1606 to install it into production (1 domain controller + dns + dhcp, 1 sccm server 1606) and the PXE work properly on PCs, laptops and surface 3 and surface 4 all times. Ergo, the steps are the right ones. I used one out of network switches, always juniper, with flat configuration. Everything works.
Second thing ...
I tried to put the lab (vmware fusion on my Apple) on the production network, in a segregated VLAN and also this configuration seems to work as long as you disable the DHCP spoofing production juniper and DAI (Dynamic ARP inspection).

Hey Brijesh,
I am facing the same issue. Your workaround above did not help :(. I think it is looking for some kind a SSL (or similar)https certificate. I am trying to convert my local C drive and the destination is my E drive. What MVMC is doing is creating a BITS transfer job with source to destination using "hyperlink"

I've even tried doing the P2V from the machine local to try and avoid certificate incompatibilities or firewall issues. The machine I am trying to copy, I actually used previously to copy another machine with no issues, so I know it's configured correctly to run MVMC.
Anyone find a resolution for this?

Though it takes a little massaging after conversion, I have found that Disk2VHD works perfectly. It's part of the sysinternals suite (free from Microsoft). Essentially it takes a VSS snapshot of a running server and converts the file system to VHD/VHDX. Once converted you can launch in Hyper-V. You'll need to remove vendor drivers, etc.
Works 100% of the time for me.

Based on experience; here are 2 recommendations that you should follow in order to successfully convert a server with this tool:
1. Always try to use the FQDN of the source server and the Hyper-V host instead of their IP addresses on the conversion configuration wizard and make sure that their FQDN responds with the correct local IP address.
2. Disable or, if possible, temporarily remove any antivirus or anti-malware program from the source server prior to running the tool.

Fastest and cheapest iSCSI(or other type of) storage for home Hyper-V lab on Win 2016?
There is a single node/standalone Win 2016 Hyper-V. I'm looking to build separate(not DAS), external storage for the Hyper-V server.
I was thinking iSCSI as it's the cheapest. Initially the plan was:
- get old PC with some Core 2 Duo, 2/4GB RAM
- add some SSD
- install Win 2016 with the iSCSI target turned on or as 2nd option install some free software like FreeNAS, StarWind Virtual SAN Free, etc
- present the SSD through 1 or 2 gigabit NICs to the Hyper-V server, which also has 2 gigabit NICs
Another option I came up with was to use the SSD directly in the Hyper-V server and just present it to itself as iSCSI, but I am not sure if this is possible at all.
The main goal is to achieve maximum throughput/speed possible.
Any advise is appreciated.

It's a big question who's your storage consumer and for what? If it's just a single box and you plan to deal with SQL Server, Hyper-V or Windows - stick with a SMB3 share, that's enough. It means YOU DON'T NEED TO INSTALL ANY SOFTWARE AT ALL.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh759341.aspx
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134187(v=ws.11).aspxMacOS X + SMB3
https://www.murage.ca/os-x-yosemite-server-4-03-smb3/
If your consumer are somebody on *nix side choice of Windows Server is wrong: built-in NFS is slow and unreliable compared to FreeBSD / Linux, so that's your first choice (+you don't need to pay money to MSFT for Windows Server, FreeBSD is free).
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771985(v=ws.11).aspx
https://www.unixmen.com/setup-nfs-server-on-freebsd/
This should help :)
P.S. If you'll stay on Windows you can always add second box and cluster them in HA mode with a free version of StarWind (in theory S2D could do the trick as well but it's pointless here - Datacenter required and you won't run any VMs, just feed storage). See what we did with a free Hyper-V server and free StarWind VSAN, here:
Free Hyper-V Server + Free StarWind VSAN
https://www.starwindsoftware.com/blog/part-2-smb-3-0-file-server-on-free-microsoft-hyper-v-server-2012-r2-clustered
(good news it works with everything including even WS2008/WS2012R2 not only 2016)
Clustering FreeBSD or Linux NFS isn't THAT easy but also doable. There's HAST (FreeBSD)/ DRBD (Linux) for shared block storage and there's a Linux-based VM-running version of free StarWind as well.

SCOM agents not working
I have trouble with one of my office.
Several servers which have SCOM monitoring not send any status information.
In SCOM I have two types of critical alerts(Microsoft.systemcenter.agentwatchergroup):
1) The System Center Management Health Service on computer
failed to heartbeat. 2) The computer ** was not accessible.
SCOM agents ver. 2012R2 UR11
Ping between SCOM and agents work
TCP 5723 - from agents to SCOM work
Trying change number of missed heartbeats to 40 - nothing.
Another servers monitoring perfectly.

Hello!
Did you check Operations Manager logs on the server that can not connect to SCOM Server?
------------------------------------
Reply:
Hi,
if you are getting both the alerts for a particular agent then it means there is some communication issue.
check these -
(1) confirm that microsoft monitoring agent( health service) us running on agent.
(2) confirm from registry editor on the agent that it shows the same Management Server, to which it is pointed in SCOM console.
(3) Open Eventvwr and go to operations manager logs and look for error messages there.
(4) If these agents are monitored via a gateway server, confirm that the GW is healthy in SCOM console.
(5) if all the above steps are correct and confirmed then try reinstalling agent on few.
Even if these doesnt work, post the logs here for further troubleshooting.
Thanks, S K Agrawal

Trouble installing WAIK on Windows 7 x64 Enterprise
Hello all,
I read many posts about people having trouble with WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit), and I must say: I wish I were that lucky. I have my deployment server ready to go (2008 R2) and I am ready to get started and capture my first W7 image. However, when I try to install AIK on my W7 x64 Enterprise technician PC, I receive an error asking me whether I'm certain I have the correct (x64) version of the software. I downloaded several official Microsoft ISOs, and regardless the language or the version, I keep receiving this message.
Any clues, anyone? Took the official MOC for deploying Win7, so once I get started, I should be able to work my way through. However, I can't even install the most basic (and essential) tool for deployment...
Thanks in advance!

Hi Alexander,
Are you using the KB3AIK_EN.iso from this site -> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5753 ?
If yes, inside the KB3AIK.iso it will give you the wAIKAMD64.msi. I can properly install this in our Windows 7 64-bit machine.
Let me know if you need more details.
Thanks.

Hi Erwin,
Thanks for sharing! Unfortunately, this download doesn't do the trick for me. I downloaded this version of AIK, and I also tried to start the install manually, as you suggest. However, the AIK doesn´t install. Tried downloading again, still no succes. Tried the Dutch version (as I'm situated in the Netherlands), still no luck. Different approach: install a Win7 x86 and try installing the 32 bit version on that machine - same results... I was getting frustrated and P*ssed off; after all, we spend a good deal of money on Microsoft products, had two personnel take an official Microsoft training specifically designed to handle this process (MOC 6294A) at the steep price of € 2500.- per person, and the most basic of tools won't install. Calling MS helpdesk is okay, until they tell you that to ask for help or solutions via that channel, they will charge you € 299,- just to start a ticket (that's $ 397.70)... My guess is that the downloads are corrupt, for some reason, because regardless of which version in downloaded, on none of my configurations I got it to work.
Luckily, my colleague downloaded the NL version some time ago, and while it looks to be the same one as the ISO that MS hosts on its download page (same size and release date), this "older" download does not give me any hassle. I only just found out, so I'll be flying to get my deployment started, as I need to have 90 laptops up and running by next Tuesday...
Thanks again for your comment, I'm relieved to say that I got it to work, although the only reason I can think of this not having worked for me before, is because the current downloadable version of AIK is corrupt, somehow - I basically cancelled out all other options.
Kind regards!

Hello,
I have downloaded the KB3AIK_EN.iso file but I cannot burn it to a DVD that is then readable. I can, however mount it with the virtual CD and burn the files to a DVD. BUT when I go to install it on the Technician PC it stops and asks me to insert the"Windows Automated Installation CD". So thinking that the label on the DVD was wrong I tried several iterations to no avail. How does it know it has the right DVD? What should the label on the DVD be? As the ISO will not burn correctly I need some sort of work around here.
Thanks

Project 2016 wont install
The installer complains that the version of Office I have was installed using Windows Installer (it wasn't). I tried uninstalling Office; Project 2016 installed and ran - but then when I tried to install Office it complained that I'd installed the 32 bit version of Project (I checked, I hadn't, it was 64 bit). ??? Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot guys, is Microsoft not now compatible with Microsoft? Or can Project and Office no longer be installed on the same computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Ways to connect to SSRS 2014 WSDL
Hello -
I am looking for a way to automatically load RDLs to SSRS. I am using SSRS 2014 and I cant seem to find any good documentation on this. The best I got was to create a web service reference to /reportservice2010.asmx?wsdl. I thought that only works on SSRS 2012. Is there another to connect via wsdl via 2014.
Also, are there any other ways to connect to 2014? Does it still use the 2012 web service? Ultimately, I would to use the web service to upload reports to the server. I am aware of the RS.exe but trying to determine the best way to do this. I would think they would have made this native in the service but maybe not.
Thanks,
Dan
Running a Scripting Host VBS in Windows 10 as an administrator changes the current directory
I have been trying to get a script (.vbs file extension) to run a script job (.wsf file extension) with elevated privileges for some time and I have a problem with Windows 10 that does not seem to be there with Windows 7. I use a Shell Object to execute the script job in a folder that contains other "resources", files and other scripts, etc. In Windows 7 the scripts executes in the current folder and all is well. However, in Windows 10 the current folder is changed to C:\Windows\System32 and as a result the script fails to find the resources it needs and gets an error.
The following is the .vbs content:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'// Declare the Script variables.
dim objShell
dim oFileSys
dim oFolder
'// Create the Script Objects.
Set oFileSys = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
set objShell = CreateObject("shell.application")
'// Determine the name of the current directory.
Set oFolder = oFileSys.GetFolder(".\")
'// Show the name of the current folder.
wscript.Echo "Current Folder is: " & oFolder
'// Execute the Install program as an Administrator.
objShell.ShellExecute "wscript.exe", " InstallSarPCOrganizer.wsf", NULL, "runas", 1
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have experimented with a analogous .vbs that executes a .wsf that simply creates a folder on the public desktop and is self contained (that is does not require other resources) and in this case the change in current folder does not cause a failure. In fact, the folder is created. (BTW if I execute the .wsf directly it is denied permission so I know the .vbs execution is with elevated privileges.)
I would certainly appreciate a solution to this delema. Thanks in advance.

Storage requirements for Hyper-V (SMB and Midrange)
Hi!
Can you share your storage selection experience for Hyper-V?
I'm interested in SMB and Midrange segments, from 2-4 hosts to 10-40 hosts (1-2 racks).
- vendor and model and why?
- what functionality do you require (tiering, flash-cache, replication, snapshots, deduplication, compression)?
- SAN/NAS (FC, iSCSI, SAS, SMB)?
- drive types: HDD, hybrid SSD+HDD, all-flash?
Reply:
If you are going to build a new solution I would defiantly go for a Storage Spaces Direct system running SMB with your preferred certified hardware vendor.
Depending on your performance requirements you should go with tiered model, SSD and HHD + NVME cache.

Hi,
i agree with Andreas, you can deploy S2D as a hyper-converged solution (starting from 2-Nodes) or in a disagregated layout with SoFS. For a little bit deeper dive into pooling, take a look here:

Hi Yahonts,
Yes S2D is an option for you! There are 2 available deployments methods for virtualized workloads, Hyperconverged ( Hyper-V and S2D in the same Host ) and Disaggregated (SoFS).
Things to consider.
1. In an S2D cluster you start from 2 nodes and scale out to 16 nodes.
2. Each node that will be used or later added to the cluster should be identical to others.
3. Can't scale up only one node at a time, all of them should be scale up.
4. Invest in your Network Fabric, RDMA capable ( Minimum 10GB Nics and Switches ). Needed by the so called East-West Traffic, the intranode communication.
5. The resulted solution can't be used as a traditional SAN / iScsi Storage, meaning that can only be used with Workloads such as Hyper-V, SQL and SoFS.
6. Most important of all, LICENSING! Available with Datacenter Edition only!
7. You should adjust to the new way of how to operate and maintaining a Hyperconverged Infra. You can't just shutdown half of the cluster for maintenance anymore as you used to in the past...
8. You should familiarize ur self with Powershell in order to maintain and operate an S2D infra. You can always purchase GUI Tools such as Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager 2016 if you are not familiarized with Powershell and need the classic GUI.
Other options such as traditional SAN storages can be the following.
DELL COMPELLENT (8000 SERIES)
HP 3PAR (8200)
NETAPP (FAS8200)
HITACHI (USPV)
Nevertheless you should somehow calculate the current and future needs in IOPS and Capacity in order to decide which Storage Solution suits you best.
Tx!

I know this feature? Do you have S2D experience in production? Is S2D better then traditional brand storage (HPE, Dell EMC...) or brand?
Well define what is better than what? :)
But with traditional storage you get also the traditional pains from iSCSI and FC.
S2D is build with the specific purpose to be storage backend for Hyper-V and is fully software defined. You will usually also get more IOPS for the money with S2D compare to traditional SANs.

There are many Arguments for S2D:
- Using of standard certified Hardware
- Knowing the Management Tools (FCM, Powershell, Scripting)
- Reversal: No propriatary Software
- You can pool also SATA Drives and design your Cache like you need
- The possibilty to run in a hyper-converged box (Compute and Storage scale together)
- Scaling general more simple
- Using the power of SMB3 like SMB direct with RDMA
- If you virtualize your workload, you need Datacenter and getting S2D out-of the box, no special Licenses
- In addition: Storage Replica for DR
If you do not recognize any advantages in S2D, run with your favorit concept of iSCSI or FC, look for Price/Performance and so on.
bye,
Marcel

But. Does anybody test or use s2d in production? Is it stable? Is it as fast and resilient as MS state in description?

Cautiousness on deploying something as new as S2D into production is a valid emotion. It is new. It also has a significant amount of promise. The major hardware vendors are working on building out configurations they feel comfortable in marketing. I would highly recommend that if you go the S2D route that you work with your preferred system vendor and purchase a solution they have validated against Microsoft's Windows Server Software Defined (WSSD) standard. If you 'roll your own', that is, put together your own configuration based on components you think should work, you will not have a system that has been thoroughly tested and validated. Microsoft's WSSD certification is a pretty significant shakedown of all components in a solution working together. Eventually I believe you will be able to put together a S2D cluster from Windows-certified components, just like you do with a normal failover cluster today, but due to the newness of S2D, my recommendation is to stick with vendors' approved, i.e. proven, solutions.
I am a big fan of this new technology. However, because of the new stresses it puts onto the entire configuration, I suggest caution in its initial deployments.

S2D is one of the options and probably not the most cost effective one. I would rather stick to good old SMB3 with SoFS instead of S2D. You can easily build such server by your own.
If you need HA/FT you can take a look at HP VSA or StarWind Virtual SAN that will do the job for you and do not require expensive Datacenter licensing. StarWind also offers SMB3-capable storage ready-nodes https://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-storage-appliance which might probably be the best fit for you.

We have discussed S2D, it was interesting and usefull, but generally off topic. Can anybode answer on the topic? Other vendors, functionality...Can you share your storage selection experience for Hyper-V?
I'm interested in SMB and Midrange segments, from 2-4 hosts to 10-40 hosts (1-2 racks).
- vendor and model and why?
- what functionality do you require (tiering, flash-cache, replication, snapshots, deduplication, compression)?
- SAN/NAS (FC, iSCSI, SAS, SMB)?
- drive types: HDD, hybrid SSD+HDD, all-flash?

I make a resurch about problems and tasks related to storage in SMB and Midrange segments.
I need to know what functions (tiering, flash-cache, replication, snapshots, clones, deduplication, compression, ODX) are in deman and what are not used.

It sounds like you are asking for marketing data. This is a technical forum designed to answer technical questions. If you want marketing data about how a product is deployed, you would be better served to hire a marketing company to perform a survey for you. Broad questions that cover a variety of markets and technologies are not appropriate for technical forums. Best & Easy approach to upload bulk data to list
Hello,
Can you please let me know what will be best option to upload 1000's of items to a Existing List in SP 2013? I am looking for something that can be fast and does not impact the performance.
I have tried the SharePoint List Datasheet view and Access Data Upload, but wondering if there is any better method available to add data to existing SharePoint List which is faster.
I am open to write some code too if its feasible option and has no impact on performance and importantly is faster.
Thanks in Advance for suggestions.

Hi Viral.
If the items you want to insert into the list are stored into an Excel spreadsheet, you could save the Excel file as a CSV file and write a PowerShell script that reads each line of the file and upload the corresponding item to the SharePoint list; TechNet gallery could provide you with some useful examples of those scripts.
Bye.

This was from memory. But that's how you would add items from a CSV to a list, please check the code in a support environment.$csv = Import-CSV "location" $web = "http://web" $list = $web.Lists["listName"]
$litem = list.addItem()
foreach($item in $csv){ $litem.["columnName"] = $item.CSVCOLUMNNAME $litem.["columnName2"] = $item.CSVCOLUMNNAME2 $litem.update() } $web.dispose()
If this is helpful please mark it so. Also if this solved your problem mark as answer.

Is there a way where in I can upload a file to SharePoint Document Library and then run the Powershell script referencing that CSV file or I have to have the CSV file locally on server?

You can choose the approach that you prefer according to your requirements; the sample PowerShell script provided by taylor.l requires the CSV file to be saved locally on the server.

You could upload it to a library but that's just extra code that isn't really needed. How often are you going to be referencing this file, will it be just as easy to store it on the server? Personally I wouldn't see a need to have it stored in SharePoint.Thank You,

How edit the BCD in PE Builds
I have to set manually the amount of RAM my computer is allowed to use. This is easily done by either using truncate memory or in GUI in msconfig.
There is no hardware problem but I think the Windows checks in some lists the maximum RAM the hardware was designed to run. Otherwise, once I set this amount manually there are no problems. Linux works fine
How to edit a PE image to set the maximum amount of RAM to 2048MB (for example) ? I have to do this otherwise I can't run PE builds to backup my computer. I edited all the BCD files in these images but without success.
Does Windows overwrites the edited BCD (with a clean version) if it finds errors ? I had to define truncate memory several times, even though it has been already set. Mostly this happened when I forced-shutdown the computer.

PowerShell script: User Access Control
Hi sir,
As part of automating out product installation we have to perform below task, but I'm unable to get any solution for this. Please help me out in this regard.
Open Group Policy Object Editor:
Start, Run, gpedit.msc
Expand: Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security Options.
In the right pane I have to change the following ("UAC" stands for "User Account Control"):
UAC: Behavior of the Elevation prompt for Administrators.....Elevate Without Prompting
UAC: Run all administrators in admin approval mode...........Disabled
Your efforts are much appreciated.
Thanks

I recommend that you contact a consultant or someone in your company trained i Windows technologies. What you are asking cannot be done the way you require it to be done.
UAC and the installer do not work like this. Just because you can do this in the GUI does not make it a reasonable way to create an installer.

The correct answer is to set this option via Group Policy.
And before you ask, this is not the right place to ask Group Policy questions.

Nope. Seems blocked to me. On one machine with UUP enabled the download was done before I checked.
On another with UUP disabled checked for updates twice, nothing. Enabled UUP and checked found 15055.

In the last preview build 15048, I posted a thread about Windows defender desktop shortcut taking a long time to open.
Now, in build 15055, the WD desktop icon has turned white. Not working anymore.
Also WD is no longer listed in Control Panel.
So, we will have to use the WD Security Center at system tray if we want to do manual updating or scanning.
