SSMS 2016 - Fonts blurry

SSMS 2016 - Fonts blurry

Using SSMS 2016 (13.0.16100.1) I notice that the fonts are quite a bit more blurry than when using SSMS 2014. A side-by-side comparison of SSMS 2016 and SSMS 2014 shows a stark difference in font quality. This is noticeable when using either the Surface Pro 3 screen or an external monitor. In both cases SSMS 2014 us crisp and clear whereas SSMS 2016 is blurry. This can be seen both in the menu bar as well as the object explorer.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks.

WORKAROUND -

Today I found that checking the box:

  • DISABLE DISPLAY SCALING ON HIGH DPI MONITORS

on the COMPATIBILITY tab of the exe/shortcut seems to make the fonts clear, sharp and no longer blurry.

Seeking recommendation for SQL Server Monitoring packages

Hi

I am working with a company that does not have any SQL Server specific monitoring solution.  I have worked with Quest Spotlight on SQL Server enterprise and Idera before, but I know there are many more out there...

If you had your choice of a SQL Server monitoring tool, what would you choose?

Thanks,

Hello,

Monitoring mainly only collects, archive and present Key Performance Counter. I don't have any preference which Monitoring tool to use, as long as it works (= don't have to many bugs).

More important is the right choice of the Performance Counter to collect, because it don't make sense to collect tons of useless KPI, while the more important ones are missing. But the right KPI depends on your personal requirements or existing issues

Microsoft Edge can not be opened in built in admin account

Hello experts,

We are currently working on windows 10 enterprise deployment. after the deployment we can not launch EDGE.

We set the UAC to disabled and in local group policy we disabled RUN ALL ADMINISTRATORS IN ADMIN ADDPROVAL MODE. We need that setting to access most of our company applications and websites.

Is there any way we can open EDGE and all other metro apps(calculator). We have removed all other inbuilt apps.

Thanks

Dear Martin,

Kindly check the dcpromo logs , this would give you a bit more insight on the cause if failure,

  %systemroot%\debug\dcpromo.log

- %systemroot%\debug\dcpromo*.log

Kindly check similar post,

Also this exact condition and resolution has been shared in the below TechNet article,

Office 2016 / One Drive / Volume Licensing failures

Hi,

Office 365 Subscriber, Volume Licensing holder of Visio/Project also.

There is an issue with install volume licensing version of Visio/Project alongside Office 365.  This issue is addressed at the TechNet library mt703272.

After following the instructions we have the issue where the key will not work, as described in the article.

I have reached out to VL for new keys, they have been unable to assist.  However they have given us a KMS key.

In this example I have installed Visio Standard 2016 via TechNet instructions on Office Deployment Tool

The product fails to activate with VL stating the following error

"The product key is for the volume-licensed version of Microsoft Visio Standard 2016, which isn't currently installed. To use this product key, contact your administrator"

The product fails to activate with KMS stating the following error

"Sorry, this isn't a Microsoft Office 2016 product key.  You may be entering a product key from another version of Office"

That's fine, we can hold off on our deployment for those who have not upgraded, or we can find work around.. Although I would rather not.

But now we are having this issue with OneDrive for business

"To continue syncing your files, please use the latest OneDrive application"

So we either have a broken Office 365 (2013) environment or a broken Office 365 (2016) environment unless we just subscribe to Project/Visio.

VL send me to tech support.

Tech support send me to VL.

No one at Microsoft seems to be willing to take this problem seriously or addressing it and taking responsibility.

Extend a non hostheader web application to same port 80

Hi

Using Sharepoint server 2013.
2 WFE
2 APP
2 node SQL cluster

I have a Web Application (http://Test.contoso.com) running without hostheader containing 10 Host named site collections.
There is a root site collection (pathbased) on the Web Application (http://Test.contoso.com).

AAM is now set up as:
http://Test.contoso.com - Default Zone
http://Test - Intranet Zone

Backstory to AAM settings:
Originally (OLD) setup:
http://Test - Default Zone
http://Test.contoso.com - Intranet Zone

We updated the AAM settings as there was a requirement to have the FQDN URL as default. Some users have stored the shorter URL (http://Test) as their IE favourites. So we need both zones.

The Web Application has not been extended and I am aware of that adding a new zone to AAM without creating a IIS site for that zone is unsupported. Therefore I want to Extend the Web Application, but the Web Application is running on port 80.

Any suggestions how to extend the Web Application so that the users can use the URL http://Test to access the root site in the Web Application? Or is this even possible?

Other suggestions?

Brgs

Bjørn

Hi Bjørn,

Whether you want users to access http://test.contoso.com when they enter the address as http://test?

If so, I suggest you using "HTTP redirect" feature in IIS manager.

Cordova Windows Phone App 8.1- issue with ng-include

Hi,

I have a list element <li><a href="#cpassword" >Change Password</a></li> . Onclick of which it should popup a modal which is included in div in the same page.

<div id="cpassword" ng-app="" ng-include="'../password_changer.html'"></div>\

and have a jquery script to open the modal

 $(document).ready(function(){
// the "href" attribute of .modal-trigger must specify the modal ID that wants to be triggered
          $('#cpassword').modal();
    });

but the html is not included and not being popped up. It works fine without ng-include, and directly writing the code inline.

But if we include the tag it does not work. Any help is much appreciated as it is very urgent.

Thanks

Are your Hosts running server core ? We have seen  WMI counters which VMM uses for available memory having issues more often on server core.

Anyways, if you haven't done already, then these two QFEs(KBs) might need to be installed in the system.

KB958124 A wmiprvse.exe process may leak memory when a WMI notification query is used heavily on a Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Vista-based computer

KB954563 Memory corruption may occur with the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1

The recommended hotfixes where not installed on the system, I installed them and rebooted the Hyper-V server. After the reboot I checked the available memory shown, the system still reports 0 bytes available.

Thanks for doing that.

I guess then there is no simple way but to rebuild the performace counter library values --

and if that doesnt work then this article talks about how
to rebuild the WMI repository

Today I logged a call by Microsoft and it was resolved by the deleting a value in the registry.

The value to delete is "Disable Performance Counters" and you can find it at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PerfOS.

After that you have to restart the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service.

You can test it by running the following command:
winrm e wmi/root/cimv2/Win32_PerfRawData_PerfOS_Memory /r:<HostMachineName>

It is not clear what is responsible for the existance of the value (maybe a previous version of the SCVMM2008 agent (beta)).

Thanks werfman, your solution worked for my also.

This solution worked for me too. I had to just delete the registry value and wait for some time. Did not restart WMI Service.

The solution worked for me too, thanks werfman for sharing the solution. Had this problem since yesterday, and the hyper-v host on x.64 SP2 server core run since 3 months. Haven't installed anything since two weeks and have no idea what caused this wrong registry key.

Reply:

On each host that has this problem, open the registry and go to the following key:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PerfOS\Parameters

If you see the key "Disable Performance Counters" then change it to 0.

Now you need to restart the WMI service on the host.

This might work too.

Thanks, S K Agrawal

The registry solution did not work for me as there was not such entry for Disabling/Deleting.

On a different blog I found the solution which said to restart SCVMM Service on the affected HOST. As there is probably some bug which requires to restart the service on the host.

KB4012212 and KB4012215 not installing on Windows Server 2008 R2 – Possible Fix

I recently had two servers that absolutely would not install KB4012212 or KB4012215 to address the WannaCry ransomware.  After poring over online forums, the generally accepted fix was to uninstall the previous January security rollup (KB3212642/3212646), reboot, and try installing the March security patch again.  However, even after following that method, the March security patch would still fail at 90% after reboot.

After doing some additional troubleshooting, I was able to fix it following this method.

  1. In looking in the CBS.log file, there are files in the "C:\Windows\WinSxS\Temp\PendingDeletes" folder that the update was trying to delete, but couldn't.  I found that they were being locked by Symantec Endpoint Protection, so I temporarily disabled the client.  Unfortunately, this still didn't allow the patch to install, and the processes still had a hold of the PendingDeletes files, so I temporarily uninstalled SEP.
  2. I then manually reset the Windows Update components.  See Microsoft Support article 971058.
  3. Next step, I ran the latest version of the Windows Update Agent for good measure.  See Microsoft Support article 949104 .
  4. Next, I installed the September 2016/KB3177467 servicing stack update.  See Microsoft Support article 3177467.
  5. I then ran the Disk Cleanup option/rebooted a few times.  The Desktop Experience feature wouldn't install either, so I had to manually copy the executables from the winsxs folder and run cleanmgr.exe from the System32 folder.  See Technet Knowledge Article ff630161 for details on how to do that.

After completing all of these steps, I re-ran the KB4012212 patch, and it installed correctly.  I had previously attempted steps 1-3, and it wasn't until I added steps 4-5 before the patch would install correctly.

I hope this helps.

Office Removal Tool Breaks Compatibility with 3rd Party Programs

I've been working on this problem for months, and I've narrowed down the cause. With new computer deployment (Dell Optiplex 3040, Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 256 SSD, Windows 10 Pro), I have found that using the Office removal tool (o15-ctrremove.diagcab) to uninstall the OEM pre-installed Office 365 (in English, French, & Spanish) breaks something in Windows that causes problems with any subsequent Office version I install (2010 and 2013).

Basically, if I uninstall each of the OEM-installed Office 365 programs individually through Programs and Features (but don't reboot until all three are removed because rebooting after the first (even though its recommended) breaks something in the uninstaller for the others)) and then install our Office 2010 (KMS), everything works fine. However, if I use the Office Removal Tool, then reboot and install our Office 2010 (have also tested with 2013 Pro) certain functionality is lost.

The main issue is exporting to Excel from our financial software, whatever response the financial software gets from Windows/Office actually crashes the financial program. I have worked with their tech support at length, and their only resolution is to completely re-image the machine.

The other issue is that Protected View won't allow files to be opened at all. Instead of opening say, an email attachment, in Protected View, it says that the file is damaged and cannot be repaired or opened, but the file opens fine on other almost identical machines. Turning off Protected View fixes this problem but obviously removes that security feature.

I have also tried to activate Office 365 from the "Get Office" app instead of uninstalling 365 and installing our own (just as a test) and that has no problems.

I am deploying 20 of these Optiplex machines so I've been able to do a lot of testing of different configurations and I've come to the conclusion that something in the Office Removal tool "breaks" something in either Windows 10 or in leftover Office files that is causing these problems in subsequent Office installations.

Can anyone at Technet give me an idea of what might be causing this? I wish a "bare-bones" machine would not come with pre-loaded office software, but this is what I have to work with.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
