I need to brand a business Intranet using Sharepoint Designer 2010

I need to brand a business Intranet using Sharepoint Designer 2010

Hello.

At my workplace, I am required to 'learn' Sharepoint Designer 2010 so that I can brand and style our Intranet to the extent that I can create layouts and designs as and when required.

I am posting to request suggestions as to what would be the most appropriate approach for this.

Before going into possibly too much irrelevant detail, I would like to know the bare essentials about how to do this and am –not- after becoming a Sharepoint Development, Administrative Expert, know anything about what's involved with deploying it on a server environment or be a programmer etc.

To give a bit of background, I oversaw the styling of our current Intranet (based on wireframes and visual mock ups) which was done in Sharepoint Designer 2010 via an external consultant who did most of the work. It was from this experience that I saw a few nuances as to how Sharepoint is used to build an Intranet page (as opposed to a basic HTML website) which I would never have known had I not seen the consultant go through it.

My technical knowledge at present, is beginner/slightly intermediate CSS and HTML. I am not even trained in usability or information architecture, apart from maybe some simple common sense and some aesthetic 'taste'!

At best, I feel all I can do is tweak what we currently have, modify the page layouts or colours and spacing which to an extent I am capable of, but I am not sure that is enough (or is it?!).

I have seen in the Page Layouts there are some bits of code 'sorry for possibly incorrect technical term' "server-side controls" which I have no idea how they work but know they are required for the site to function properly and the possibility of being required to understand this is quite daunting.

I would have thought this would be something that a Developer would be responsible to implement as opposed to myself a "Designer". If that is the case then I would be really quite relieved, but at present I feel like I am required to take on more than I can realistically handle. In regards to that, I know there are some things about how Sharepoint works that I would be required to learn even if I am only concerned just the look and feel aspect of the site.

What is frustrating is that what I feel the implied 'quick fix' solution for this by my employer is to send me off on a '3 day course' because '5 days would probably be too much time off work' and my fear is that a) that is not enough time to learn what I am required to do, and b) it may not be relevant to what I want to achieve, and yet after coming back from it, I would be expected to be a Sharepoint Pro.

Any comments or suggestions gratefully appreciated.

So I find my self in a not dissimilar situation.  I'm new to SP/InfoPath and our model says 'no code' is allowed (C#/VB), only 'rules'.  I've inherited a couple of forms and a small sub-site from a dev who no longer works here and they have no design documentation.

First, the buisness made decisions no how complex your site was to be, who would do what, and how that would all play out over time.  If they screwed the pooch by underestimating what it would take for any random person to take over after the consultant left, well, that would be a problem for the buisness - do NOT take the hit for crappy business decisions.

If you can get to a class or two, the go!  Go with questions, bug the hell out of the instructor, and see what you can take away from your training.

Try and set up an area where you can play without taking the whole site down.  If you have an actual dev environment,  you're golden (we don't so I have to play on the production box).

If your site's environment is pretty simple (as is ours - no real devs allowed, no custom code, just use baked in SP/IP functions), then you can probably become an 'expert' pretty quick.  If, on the other hand, you have custom code, fancy C# workflows, etc, then if Malcolm Gladstone is correct, you have 10,000 hours in front of you to become an expert and there's not much you can do but dig in and learn.

I'm hoping this forum will provide help so if you have questions, ask them.  I'm trying to be as specific as I can to limit the scope of each question.  Use Mr. Google.  If you have access to any local experts, then drain them of information.

Good luck (and wish me well!)

Forefront TMG server blocking certain URLs

We have installed Forefront TMG 2012 server in our network. But some times, it blocks certain URLs.

There is one gov site http://www.eproc.bihar.gov.in/ which get redirected to https://www.eproc.bihar.gov.in/ROOTAPP/BELTRON.jsp?company=BELTRON. This site is not browsing through TMG server. Without TMG Server or through ISA 2004 server, sites opens properly. But with TMG server, "Session Lost. Please Login" web page appears.

We really do not understand what is problem with TMG server? why is it not browsing web page?

Kindly help to resolve this.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Reply:

If it works OK with ISA 2004, I'd do the following:

On the ISA Server, ISA Best Practices Analyzer and run ISA Data Packager. Select to run a Basic Repro and Static Configuration scenario. Follow the on screen instructions and reproduce the problem when prompted.

Do the same on the TMG Server, this time using the TMG Data Packager.

Compare the output, starting with

Review the TMG/ISA Best Practices Report, check for and reported issues.

WebProxy log files

Network Monitor capture files from both external and internal side of TMG/ISA

Hi Anders,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I checked the same, but did not find anything except below information in network traces result. Below is the message in network traces from my proxy server to affected URL.

Description == "TCP: [Bad CheckSum]Flags=...A...F, SrcPort=14022, DstPort=HTTP(80), PayloadLen=0, Seq=299511851, Ack=1377435571, Win=63539 (scale factor 0x0) = 63539"Conversation.TCP.Id == 5842

Is it a reason for my issue and if yes then how to come out of this?

Appreciate your feed back

Thanks and Regards,

Reply:

The above may or my not have anything to do with this. It is impossible to say without seeing the entire trace. Bad checksum may be a red herring.

I assume that you reviewed all other information and it does not provide any details? I would assume that you would find useful information in the webproxy log. As this is HTTP, you should be able to see an HTTP session as well in the netmon.

Another thing that may be useful is to use the developer tools in IE (press F12) and run a trace from the client the working and not working way in order to see what is missing.

SCCM 2012 Licensing

Hi,

1)I am planning to upgrade my environment of SMS 2003 to SCCM 2012 and we currently have "VLA SYSTEM CENTER CONFIGURATION MANAGER CLIENT MANAGEMENT SA PER USER" and "VLA WINDOWS SERVER CAL USER CAL SOFTWARE ASSURANCE".  So do I need to purchase a license for SCCM 2012 and I am planning to have windows server 2008 gold disk for each site server aswell.

2) Also for sizing the disks I am planning to have the C:(OS) at 50 GB and another application drive with 50 GB and allocating system state at 20 GB. Can someone suggest if this holds good for Windows server 2008 64 bit Gold Disk with 16 GB ram , Please note I will be having SQL Server 2008 installed here as-well.

Please suggest !

1) There are so many different System Center SKU's and I really recommend that you contact your local license guru

2) Hard to tell with so Little information. Ususally I would have seperate drivers for my tempDB, SQL log, CM database, Content library, program files and OS.

1)Yes, The last thing I found was License for Server ML Edition and I think I need to get these and I am not sure if I need to buy a separate license for SQL Server though.

2) What I am doing is making a partition for the application to reside so my C will have only the OS and the paging and some space and all my applications and other stuff will be moved to the other drive and having separate drives for package source, SQL, Logs, backup and all......

here I think you have write down, Custome quety webpart, I do not think so this can be done using OOTB.

And suppose u want to do by using OOTB , then you have to edit XSLT provided by the Content query webpat.

And also you need to write some javascript functions to achieve this.

Named Ranges - Export to excel - Is it possible to set named ranges via RDL for excel output? Where did Print_Titles named range come from?

I am wondering if it is possible to set something in the RDL document that will cause a excel generated report to have named ranges?

I am trying to build unit testing for my report output and I want to be able to determine where in the report the differences occur. We are thinking that down the road, if we change the report header all of 500 reports will fail and having a named range will help make it easier to determine if the changes are only in an isolated area to make it easier to update benchmarks.

Also I have created a report and exported it to excel using a Report Server BI project and the report has a named range for Print_Titles for the report header.  I can't find this in the RDL document anywhere.  Is this controllable? Is this the rendering extension setting the value.

I found this post which describes a custom function to add the range name, but i have no idea how to use it nor how to get it to not error:

This function will name a range for you. Function NameRange(strName As String, strRange as String) As Boolean strName = Replace(strName," ","_") On Error Resume Next ThisWorkbook.Names.Add Name:=strName, _         RefersTo:="=" & strRange, Visible:=True If Err = 0 Then  NameRange = True End If On Error Goto 0 End Function To call it, pass in the name you want, and the range it refers to. Ex: Call NameRange("My Range","A1:B100") The function returns boolean TRUE if successful. Also note that spaces are not allowed, so the function converts spaces to underscores. HTH

Reply:

This is vb code for modifying the excel workbook.  You would have to open the file know where to look and set your ranges.

I was looking for a solution where I could tweak something in the RDL document that would cause the named range to be created.

I read somewhere that the DataElementName and DataElementOutput is the way to go but I couldn't get it to function they way I wanted.

How to get the Logitech G-Series LCD Applet to work in Windows 8

This isn't a question, more of a guide to owners of the Logitech G15 keyboard, or similar hardware, that are running the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Those that have this hardware may notice that the LCD Game Panel doesn't work properly in W8. To fix this you will need to download both the LCD Game Panel Software found here: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/441/3498?softwareid=4154&osid=14&section=downloads (download the Windows 7 version, 64-bit or 32-bit appropriate to what you have.) and 7-Zip which can be found here: http://www.7-zip.org/

Install 7-Zip, which should install with no issues. If you try and install the Game Panel software it will tell you it cannot install on this version of the OS. Using 7-Zip extract the Game Panel Installer into a new folder, then navigate to the "1b-GamePanel-x64" folder inside. (May end in x32 for you 32-bit users out there.) Inside is a program called "GPInst" which when ran, will install the Game Panel and Gaming Profile software, bypassing the OS version check without any issues. You will have to then manually run the Game Panel software in your Program Files folder, or off the Start Screen. When you open it, you may also notice that all the default LCD applets are missing, do not worry, they were installed, just not ran alongside the installation. You will have to manually run each one while the Game Panel config window is open so that they register with the application. This is done simply by opening them from their installed folder found in "C:\Program Files\Logitech\GamePanel Software\Applets" by default.

That's all there is to it! Enjoy!

How to connect a bluetooth mouse to Window 8?

I just got a Toshiba Satellite C875 with Window 8 and was trying to connect my Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 but failed. I truned on the bluetooth mouse, held the power button for 5 seconds but the computer couldn't recognize it ( under "add device" function, no wireless mouse was found). I also tried to go to "Wireless" under "Control Panel", thought I might need to turn the bluetooth on in the computer first, but there was no such thing. The computer should have the built-in bluetooth driver so I don't think I need to download the bluetooth driver anymore.

Can anyone help with it?

Thanks a lot!!!

Feedback: Make it clear when a charm has functionality specific to the app

Often when I'm learning to use an app, I look through all the charms to see if I can find the feature that I'm looking for.

One thing that would help narrow the search is if the charm icons would indicate if the contract is supported by the app.

For example, if a program supports the Share charm, distinguish it from the other charms. If it doesn't, I want to know that it doesn't without having to click on it first.

Support: You get error "You have selected a word or phrase that is not allowed" when creating a hosted service

Problem:  You get error 'You have selected a word or phrase that is not allowed' when creating a hosted service on Windows Azure portal.

Symptoms:  You create a hosted service name and check name availability. You get the error 'You have selected a word or phrase that is not allowed'.

Resolution Steps:

Windows Azure has a list of offensive, abusive and trademarked names/phrases which are not allowed within the *.cloudapp.net domain. Besides all known curse words in all languages, it also contains common abusive phishing terms, such as "bid", "bank", "award", etc.  Customers cannot create domain names which contain these terms.

Suggestion for the customer is to create a different name, then create their own top-level DNS name which they CNAME redirect to their newly created subdomain within cloudapp.net. For example, you can create myservice.cloudapp.net and create a CNAME www.mybank.com to the myservice.cloudapp.net name.

This behavior / restriction is by design. It is unlikely that Windows Azure will relax the validation rules to allow common phishing terms.

SQL Server 2008 Express - through SQL Configuration Manager console, I dont see only MSFW service

hello,

we have SQL Server 2008 Express Edition (with FTMG 2010 installation).

When I open SQL Configuration Manager console, I dont see only MSFW service. I see it on services.msc, logs are ok.

checking rights:

sc sdshow MSSQL$MSFW
sc sdshow MSSQL$ISARS

this shows that for MSSQL$MSFW is missing

(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;IU)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;SU)

I add these rights and after that MSFW is showed in Conf Manatager. But after restart I have same situation. I dont see MSFW through Configuration Manager. with rights are also same situation - for MSFW is missing (A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;IU)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;SU).

I check domain and local GPO fof this server, and I didnt find any important differences.
Also check WMI - it seems ok.

If you have any suggestion pls write.

My Windows sound does not work on my Dell Laptop

When i got my laptop 16th november 2012 The sound worked but in december 2012 my sound did not work and I have lost all my sound devices it keeps saying

Reply:

Have you looked for any updated sound drivers on Dell's site? You can reinstall the original driver first and see if that fixes it.

Since it's a new laptop, you may want to contact Dell while the warranty is still valid, just in case there's a hardware problem. Their support staff should be able to walk you through re-installing the sound device without having to revert to day one. Be sure to have a data backup to an external device, just in case. Some companies like to start you off by restoring to factory fresh, thereby losing everything you've installed since 11/16/12.

Install WSS 2013 Foundation on a Plesk Server (windows)

I'm trying to install WSS Foundation 2013 along side Plesk 10 on a Windows 2008 r2 Box. The physical installation (in single server mode) installed ok. It took over the default port 80. So my usual DotNetNuke site was offline.

I changed the default SharePoint binding to port 81 and CA to port 8000 - recycled the web server. SharePoint loaded on port 81, as did CA. However my existing site on port 80 (DNN / Plesk) kept on giving me a 503 error. After looking at the application pools, I noticed that the pools required for running the DNN site had been shut down. So naturally, restarted then, tried to connect to the site on port 80. Again the pools were shut down.

So my question is: Has any body got Plesk and Sharepoint 2013 running on the same window server?

Login screen elements missing upon wake from sleep - requires hard shutdown

I have been running the Win7 Professional x64 RTM release on my Lenovo X61 tablet (x61t, Core2Duo L7700 1.8GHz, 4Gb internal, Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Graphics, I think it's model X3100), and while almost everything is flawless, I have had two wake-from-sleep problems in the past two weeks. Upon pressing the power button, I'm presented with the standard welcome image (blue logon screen, the new Windows 7 'pigeon', the text 'Windows 7 Professional') but nothing else. There are no other screen elements: no text box to type the password, no user ID picture, nothing. Hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't do anything, swiping my finger on the fingerprint reader doesn't log me in, putting the tablet back to sleep and waking it again doesn't make a difference, opening and closing the screen doesn't make a difference. The only thing I can do in this case is force a shutdown by holding down the power button, which could cause me to lose work (it hasn't so far - fingers crossed..). I hope Win7 sends troubleshooting info after such user shutdown events. The device manager doesn't show any problematic devices. Perhaps worth noting: I did not have such issues in the past year running Vista x64 in exactly the same configuration.

Some things I do that may be related (no statistics yet):
- I work with a docking station, but I *think* this also happened when not using that.
- I tend to turn off the wireless at home right before sleeping the tablet (hardware switch)
- I sleep the system with the tablet open, and wake it with the screen closed in the docking station.

I'll report back if this indeed also happens when not using the docking station. It's a hard problem to track down, because the keywords that describe the issue are so generic, and because it only happens about once a week. If anyone has any suggestions or is also experiencing this, please share details. It would be great to resolve this.

Edit: perhaps relevant: I see some minor HDD activity when this happens, and my USB mouse, connected to a Dell monitor integrated USB hub, hooked up to my docking station (ultrabase), works fine, so the system does not really seem to be 'locked up'.

Custom Views, Administrative:  The print spooler failed to reopen an existing printer connection because it could not read the configuration information from the registry key S-x-y-zz-xxxxxxxxxx-yyyyyyyyyy-zzzzzzzzzz-1000\Printers\Connections\,,xx.xxxxx.xxx.xxx,Printer_Name. This can occur if the key name or values are malformed or missing. (note: I modified the network name and printer name here)

Windows Logs, Application:   "NtpClient was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source because of discovery error. NtpClient will try again in 3473457 minutes and double the reattempt interval thereafter. The error was: The entry is not found. (0x800706E1)" That doesn't seem like it would interrupt anything else, but who knows.

Windows Logs, System: no errors or warnings around that time.

After the hard restart, I see the same network printer error events, but this time the logon screen appears normal, so perhaps that's not it.

Hi Joe,

According to your description, we should check the printer connection firstly. So please remove the printer from the computer to check this issue. If the problem can be solved, it means this issue caused by the printer connection. After solving it, we can add the printer again at that time.

Click Start->Control Panel-> Devices and Printers->Right click on the printer and choose Remove device

After that, please restart the computer to check if we can wake the computer properly from sleep.

If the computer still encountered the problem, this issue also can be caused by the BIOS or video driver is out of date.

From the Lenovo official website, the BIOS has updated to 10 Jun 2009, please check it in the below link:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-68009.html

Also, from the above site, we can notice that there is not appropriate video driver for Windows 7. But after checking the Intel website, they provide the Windows 7 Professional x64bit Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Graphics driver, we can download it from Intel website, and then install it on the computer to check this issue.

The download link is below:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2800&OSFullName=Windows+7+Professional%2C+64-bit+version*&lang=eng&strOSs=198&submit=Go%21

However, if you don't know how to update BIOS or the above driver did not solve this issue, I suggest you contact the Lenovo Support help us check this issue and check if there is any driver compatible with Windows 7:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/homeLenovo.do?country=us

Hopeful the above information can help you solve this issue.

Thanks Betty, I'll try all suggestions, and report back if the issue returns. This could take a while since it happens so rarely. The offending printer is on the domain that I am part of, so maybe there is an issue with running the tablet away from the domain (wireless home network), sleeping it, and returning from sleep while on the domain (wired LAN). Also, thanks for tracking down the video driver. -Joe

Quick update: it's definitely not related to the docking station or external monitor. It just happened resuming from sleep without any change in system environment.

New possibility: the login screen often shows the 'please scan your finger' text and image for the fingerprint reader, and I noticed that the fingerprint reader driver had the option 'allow the system to turn off this device to save power' enabled. This time the system had shut down by hibernating to prevent data loss. Before updating the BIOS, which I'm a little hesitant to do, I have turned off this type of power management on most devices using the device manager (no wake on LAN etc either). I'll be reporting back if the problem happens again. -Joe

Hi Joe,

According to your research, the option "allow the system to turn off this device to save power" may be the root cause of the problem, now, please disable this option in fingerprint reader driver, and then restart the computer to test this issue.

In addition, if this problem still exists, I suggest you remove the fingerprint reader on the computer, and then test this issue again. If the problem disappear after removing the fingerprint reader, I suggest we add the fingerprint reader on the computer, and then install the latest driver on the computer and disable that option to test this issue again.

Hope the above suggestion can help you solve this issue.

Betty

Thanks. I have a hunch that the problem has to do with the power state of the built in fingerprint reader, so for now I'll keep testing with power management off, but the driver otherwise active. As I mentioned, this only happens once every few days, so the troubleshooting is a slow process. It's not as easy as 'disable driver, restart to check if this fixed it'. As always, I'll report back with any updates. No news means things are going well. -Joe

Hi Joe,

How things are going now.

Can you update this issue and let me know if my solution can solve this issue now.

Wait, wasn't this my own solution? ;)  Anyway, thanks for checking back, so far no further lockups, so it's possible that it was indeed the power state of the fingerprint reader. As I mentioned previously, it's an intermittent issue, so no news is good news. Let's give this two more weeks before declaring it a solution. -Joe

So far one week without the problem. It's looking like it is indeed power management related. Can't say which device, but the fingerprint reader is the most likely culprit, especially since normally my login screen usually shows up with the fingerprint 'swipe finger to log in' prompt.

If anyone else experiences this problem, please ONLY disable power management on the fingerprint reader so we can rule out any other devices as the cause. In the device manager it's under 'biometric devices'. On my system it's installed as the 'TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor' by UPEK, driver version 1.2.0.151, date 5/7/2009. To change the power settings, open the device manager, expand 'biometric devices', right click on the fingerprint reader driver, select 'properties', go to the tab 'Power Management', and disable 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'.   -Joe

OK, I'm ready to declare victory. Turning off power management on the fingerprint reader, as well as on the network card components solved this problem. If experiencing this problem, please try only disabling power management on the fingerprint reader. Disabling it for the network card may not have been necessary. -Joe

[Edit: problem hasn't returned in nearly a month, so it was VERY likely an issue with the power management on the fingerprint reader]

I wonder if this is a related issues:
Either way, this really hasn't returned in months since I change the power options, so if not solved, at least there is a workaround.

Hello.

I have the same problem o my R500 like Joe Sixgig, can you tell me where I disable power management on the fingerprint reader

thx

If you're on Win7, go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Biometric devices > Fingerprint Reader (or similar)

Right click that last name, and select properties. Now open the tab that states 'Power management', and uncheck 'allow the computer to  turn this device off ..', and click 'OK'.

I'm afraid not! Anyone else? You could step through all drivers and try turning off power management on all of them, if battery life is not of critical importance, but other than that I don't have any other ideas I'm afraid.

This is interesting. I've got Precision M6300, C2D T7700 2.4GHz, 4GB, Intel PM965, Quadro FX3600 and I experienced the exact same issue once... At least I'll know where to look at now.

Has this issue been resolved?

I have the exact same problem. After wakeup from hibernation or sleep the Windows welcome screen shows up, but it is not possible to select user or type password and CTRL+ALT+DEL gives no response. Only valid option is to hard-reboot the computer.

It does not happens very time the computer is resumed from hibernation, but once in a while, and not with same intervals on all the notebooks.

System:

hp notebook 6730b (with fingerprint reader)
Windows 7 x64 Enterprise

Power management for the Fingerprint reader is turned off in device manager.

A workaround for Lenovo T500 when you wake from sleep to log in screen with no input field: Fn+F12 to hibernate, wait for hibernate (disk activity will cease), power button to wake. With my laptop, this always causes the log in input field to return. I will now be trying Joe Sixgig's solution...

Sorry to say that this just happened again, even though power management on fingerprint reader is off. Next time this happens I'll try your Fn+F12 trick, thanks for the tip.

Acer Travlemate 8572T: I have same problem ! Missing user icons after screen lock or normal shutdown. Happens 75% of time now. Only recover with safe restart but even with this I may have to repeat twice. Computer getting close to being unusable.

- power management doenst work

- Fn+F12 doest work

- uninstall Windows live doesnt work

Why has there been no response by Microsoft technical team to this problem after 2 years?

Dell Latitude XT2 Tablet PC 64 bit: I had this identical issue. I had it VERY consistantly. If my computer fell asleep while it was plugged up, no matter the situation, it wouldn't show me the logon elements. I changed the settings of my power button and sleep button and it seems to have fixed the issue. I changed it to shut down and tried it, it worked fine. I changed it back, and everything seems fine I have put it to sleep and hibernate with it plugged up three or four times and no issue thus far. Thanks for the insight.

I will keep you up to date if this solves the problem or not.

Has anybody else tried it?

Thanks,

My problem started back after about a week. I changed the Power Button Action to Shutdown and the Put Computer to Sleep time to 1 minute and it seems to have worked again. But with little confidence in Microsoft I have disabled "Require a password on wakeup" or whatever, avoiding thier stupid altogether (no need for a password? no requiring login elements to log in)

Ill repost if I find anything new.

(yes Im aware this wont work for somebody who needs protection)

I find it interesting (granted unfortunate) but interesting that you dont recieve the log in elements upon reboot. It sounds like many other users get the login elements on the first reboot.

Reply:
Yes I do hard reboot and login with safe restart. Then restart but logon elements all still missing. I then repeat the process and again login elelemnts missing. I then hard reboot and and logon normally and elements are there.

Finally fixed it !

Tick : Allow this device to wake up the computer

Same problem here, Lenovo T61, Win 7 64-bit. Will try disabling power management on the fingerprint reader and see what happens. On a side-note I had an issue where after sleeping a few times, eventually the fingerprint reader would stop working and I'd have to login using my password. Hopefully this will fix one of these.

Alex unfortunately I don't think that's the fix for everyone else. Doesn't seem related to the more generic problem as that setting is essentially just Wake on LAN as I understand it.
