Windows 2003 File Sharing problem

Windows 2003 File Sharing problem

Hello All;

We are running Microsoft Server 2003 R2, and using it as our DNS and DHCP (using AD). We had help setting up our domain, as my boss and I are no experts in Server Administration. Anyway, our Network was working perfectly, all computers on the domain could be seen by all other computers, shares could be set up, sharing printers was a simple task, etc. - until my boss took down the network over the weekend. I am not sure what he did, but we got the network back up and running, but you can no longer see any other computers on the domain, nor can you share printers attached to domain computers. What do I have to do to get this back, or what should I be looking at?

All I know of what he did was to install Peachtree on the server for a reason that I dont understand, and it blocked ports in the Firewall that took down the network. To get the network back, he disabled the firewall, but now we can no longer see any of the other computers on the domain, and all of our shares are gone, and people who print to other printers on the domain cannot do so. He may have made other changes in Windows Server, or the DNS, when attempting to get the network back before he figured out it was the firewall.

Please help.

Thanks

Integration of MS-Exchange Server with Linux Mail Server

Hello Everyone,

We are using MS-Exchange 2003 Standard edition with domain name xyz.com, our all users are sending and receiving emails using MS-Exchange, for testing purpose we have deployed Linux server with Postmaster mailing applications with xyz.com domain.

We have created 10 users on Linux mail server and remaining on MS-Exchange now when exchange user send any emails to linux mail server user then exchange server bounce the email.

I want to configure Linux and MS-Exchange so that linux user can send email to exchange users and vice versa.

Your reply is really appreciated.

Hi,
Change your Accepted Domain for xyz.com from Authorative to Internal Relay.
And then you need to create a SendConnector with xyz.com as an Address Space and your Linux Server as the Smarthost.

Dear Martina,

Thanks for your reply.

But this is an Exchange 2003 not exchange 2010.

In my case where should i make necessary changes ?

Whopps, missed the part that you were having an Exchange 2003 Server. This is an Exchange 2010 Forum so... :)

In that case, you need to modify your Recipient Policy for the domain xyz.com and uncheck "This Organization is responisble for all..." and create a SMTP Connector with the same kind of settings I wrote in my previous post.

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321721

Dear Martina,

Thanks for the quick update.

But if i make this change on live exchange 2003 server then this will impact on existing users?

Is there any other way to archive this goal? because this linux server is for demo purpose only.

Waiting for your reply.

Rgds,

Arjun

No, it will not impact your users.
If you make that change, all messages for recipients not in the Exchange ORG, will be forwarded to your Linux Box.

That is the only way you can get this to work if you want to share the SMTP Name Space.

Upgrade WinXp SP3 to Win7 or 8

Need help. Hard drive died. Installed new drive and the legal full copy of Winxp that has been updated to SP3.

Now g to upgrade Winxp up to win 7 or win 8 with no luck.

Have both Win 7 and Win 8 upgrade discs; PC set to boot of the CD rom. CD rom will not read either version and update will not open. CD Rom works with other disks.

I am going through the very same thing.  Lastly I bought a new pc brand cd of W7 that is originally for my laptop, had the same prbs so I tried those cds n came upon another issue where they think my brand new Hard drive is bad, so Im  currently waiting on the rma to send it back n get another, n try to install W& from the factory cds.

I was able to get w8 previously but couldn't get all my drivers, n my usb ports were not showing up in device mgr n not working, so i resorted to buy the Factory cds, I got 3, the 1st cd took 2 days to finish n gave errors that indicated a bad HDD .

In both cases I would determine the manufacturer of the hard drives and then go to the manufacturers website and download thier diagnostic disks.   Run the diagnostics and ensure that the HDs are indeed functioning properly.

It has been my experience that many of the Win7 or Vista drivers will work in Win8.

Hi,

If it is a CD ROM, it won't be able to read the DVD. In addition, we can install Windows 7 using a USB flash drive.

Office Customization Tool - Control QAT position, above or below ribbon

Hi all,

I spent about five hours figuring this out today, before a coworker showed me the light.  If you have a Quick Access Toolbar configured that you'd like to deploy to a client, but need to specify whether it is above or below the Ribbon, simply deploy a registry setting using scripts, or Group Policy settings.

The key that controls the QAT position is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\toolbars\Word.  The value name is QuickAccessToolbarStyle, which should be a REG_DWORD, hexidecimal, with 0 being above the ribbon, and 1 being below.

You can adjust similar settings for Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Visio, just substitute the appropriate name in for 'Word' above.

  Hope this helps someone.

Complicated FIM synchronization

Hi,

I'm using FIM 2010 for user access management solution. We have custom resource types defined. One of these types is "Business Role".

Business Role is a unit that is used to grant/revoke some rights to the end user. It contains different attributes that control also the granted/revoked scope of the business role. The users are imported from AD and we have decided to use AD groups to control access to the developed tool itself.

So we wanted to be able to configure FIM that all members of some AD group can create specific Business Role grant/revokes. At the beginning we had different FIM sets with manually managed members:

 - All Role Administrators

 - All Role Requestors

 - All Role Readers.

But the end users didn't like the part of FIM that manages members of the sets and decided to move this management to AD groups.

We will redefine FIM sets to use group membership and will import AD groups also.

Now it turned out that based on Business Role assignments we must populate some AD groups (some legacy applications cannot be migrated to claims based approach that we are implementing with help from FIM). And because the logic for the group looks to complicated for FIM Synchronization Rules we decided to export Business Roles to SQL via SQL MA and provide some views on SQL that will serve the members of these groups. Now we wanted to use the contents of the views and export group membership to AD. We don't need this information on FIM so probably the only option left is to use old-style non-declarative synchronization?

Best regards

I'm not sure I follow the question, but, what you're describing essentially sounds like the BHOLD component that's included with R2. You might want to see if leveraging that is a better option in lieu of a custom solution.

Brian,

Thank you for your reply.

We have investigated BHOLD on R2 and found that it doesn't meet our requirements. Business Role is just one type of the resource types. And actually for external systems, which access to FIM manages, are using system roles. Business Role is more or less a collection of system roles and some other attributes. We use information to generate external system specific claims. The claims are generated by ADFS connection to FIM Service database. I will take another look at BHOLD, and maybe it will be good to manage access to FIM resources not to external systems.

Also we have found that BHOLD UI is less customizable than FIM UI - which already is not very configurable.

The goal was to create FIM-based solution to manage access to external resources. Now we need something that manages access to FIM resources and integrates with AD.

Jameel,

I need to import groups from AD to FIM. Also I need to provision some group membership from FIM to AD based on FIM resources.

And because the provisioning logic is complicated, I decided to export related resources to SQL Server database and implement this logic using SQL views. The selection of the group that the user should belong is made by analyzing other resources in FIM.

For instance. Let's assume I have a resource type Business Role in FIM. Also I have Business Role Assignment which relates to the user and business role. Now, for some business roles I need to set membership in AD. If a user was assigned "Sample Role" business role, then it should be a member of "AppGroups_<BUSINESS_ROLE_NAME>" AD group.

My first idea was to implement this using FIM synchronization rules. But because the names of the business roles are dynamic/configurable I cannot see any way to do it this way. Implementing this using SQL Server views looks easier to implement and maintain for me.

So my flow is:

  • provision users and groups from AD MA -> FIM MA
  • provision users and AppGroups_* groups (the groups which members will be managed) from AD MA -> SQL MA
  • provision Business Roles, Business Role Assignments from FIM MA -> SQL MA
  • provision AppGroups_* membership from SQL MA -> AD MA.

And finally, my question are:

  • is it possible to implement this using AD MA and FIM MA only. I mean without a lot of coding effort?
  • if not, does the solution proposed looks fine and should work (I'm not sure if I don't get any resolution conflicts for some attributes flowing from multiple sources)?
  • that is mean that only old-style, non-declarative synchronization can be used for flows between AD and SQL?

Best regards

Rafal,

From what you are describing, BHOLD fits right in. It does exactly what you intend to do. However, looking at your previous note, it makes me wonder why it woudn't meet your requirements.

For a moment, lets say your assumption that BHOLD does meet your requirements is true. In that case, FIM R2 by itself can meet this requirement without BHOLD as welll.

A Dynamic Group would be my choice. Your business logic of assigning users to groups will be encapsulated in the definition of the dynamic groups. The synchronization rule would simply flow the members attribute.

As you had mentioned, your business logic depends on data already in FIM, a dynamic group can be easily constructed given your criteria.

Have you considered this approach?

What do you mean by Dynamic Group? Is it normal security group with criteria-based members? Or is it something new in FIM 2010 R2?

Dynamic groups are indeed groups with criteria based memebers.

Reply:
Dynamic groups are indeed groups with criteria based memebers.

Then it will not fit at all. For instance for 'Sample Group' the criteria would be:

select users which has Business Role Assignment of status Implemented  and Business Role 'Sample Role'.

The schema I'm working on is:

 - resource type: business role (name, display name, active and more)

 - resource type: business role assignment (name, user, business role, status).

Based on the current business role assignments (which can be of status Requested/Implemented) I need to provision the users to the appropriate security groups.

Hey,

Can someone gyuide me to upload the spatial data into SQL server 2008. I had tried Shape2SQL for the same but didn't get success. When I click on Upload button after select the *.shp file and server configuration, nothing happen neither I get any error message.

Also guide me, how to uses of Catfood.Shapefile.1.51 in SSIS package to upload *.shp file into SQL Server 2008.

Actually I want to use US states map in SSRS. For this I want to upload this shape file SQL server 2008.

If you only want to use US States in SSRS, you don't need to import them into SQL Server - you can specify an ESRI shapefile as a datasource for the report map layer directly.

In fact, SSRS comes with a map of US states in its gallery anyway, so you can just use that!

I want to colored the states as per it value. So how can I specify an ESRI shapefile as a datasource for the report map layer directly if i use it with SSRS 2008 R2.

Reply:

You need to create an analytic dataset that contains a field that matches one of the fields in the spatial dataset (just like as if you were creating a JOIN between fields in two tables). In the layer properties dialog box, select the Analytical data tab and then select the matching fields from the two datasets.

Having linked the two datasets, you can then create a colour rule to change the fill of each state by choosing [population] from the analytical dataset as the data field.

BSOD while gaming. ntoskrnl.exe+4b094c

ok so heres the whole story. a few months back i upgraded my GPU from the OEM card that came with my HPE-410y PC to a EVGA Nvidia GTX 560.

because the OEM PSU couldnt handle the GPU i upgraded to a 550w PSU which blew out after a few months. well my PC sat for a couple months until i could get around to fixing it then i finally went and bought a rosewill 1000w PSU. this upgrade got my PC up and running but shortly afterwards my pc started the BSOD issue i am still dealing with.

originally my pc said it was a plug and play driver issue so i fixed that but that didnt stop the issue. so i updated all my drivers but still no change. i scanned the HDD and found bad sectors so i ordered a new 256gb OCZ agility4 SSD and reinstalled a brand new OS to the SSD. still i have the same problem.

this only happens when gaming so my next thought was the video card maybe got fried when the 550w PSU blew out. so i sent the GTX 560 back to EVGA and got a new one. still crashing during games.

i have been doing alot of research into this problem and all the dumps i have looked at says ntoskrnl.exe+4b094c caused the BSOD. some forums say that the Nvidia HD audio driver is the cause so i uninstalled it. other forums point to bad RAM so i ran Memtest86 for hours with no errors. i then reseated my 4 2gb sticks. still no change.

from there i cleaned out the dust from all the pc components and ran thermal tests on the PC even opening the case and pointing a fan at the CPU but still crashed and the CPU logs show the temp never rose into dangerous levels.

i have spent the last month troubleshooting this problem and i feel like my motherboard my be the problem but i can in no way verify that. please help. i have uploaded the dump file for the crash as well as the seven forums log that is a requirement for BSOD posts.

It isnt ntoskrnl, if it were you wouldnt be able to boot past your log on screen.  A 124 is a hardware issue and you have changed so many things it is ahrd to say what the orignal problem was in this one DMP file.  It does say Probably caused by : AuthenticAMD.  Thats usually a CPU issue especailly with tri-cores.  we need more DMPs to spot trends and all the hardware needs to go as much back to default as possible.

Stop 0x124 is a hardware error

If you are overclocking try resetting your processor to standard settings and see if that helps.

If you continue to get BSOD here are some more things you may want to consider.

This is usually heat related, defective hardware, memory or even processor though it is"possible" that it is driver related (rare).

Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try
Synopsis:

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress.

 Generic "Stop 0x124" Troubleshooting Strategy:

1) Ensure that none of the hardware components are overclocked. Hardware that is driven beyond its design specifications - by overclocking - can malfunction in unpredictable ways.

2) Ensure that the machine is adequately cooled.
If there is any doubt, open up the side of the PC case (be mindful of any relevant warranty conditions!) and point a mains fan squarely at the motherboard. That will rule out most (lack of) cooling issues.

3) Update all hardware-related drivers: video, sound, RAID (if any), NIC... anything that interacts with a piece of hardware.
It is good practice to run the latest drivers anyway.

4) Update the motherboard BIOS according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Their website should provide detailed instructions as to the brand and model-specific procedure.

5) Rarely, bugs in the OS may cause "false positive" 0x124 events where the hardware wasn't complaining but Windows thought otherwise (because of the bug).
At the time of writing, Windows 7 is not known to suffer from any such defects, but it is nevertheless important to always keep Windows itself updated.

6) Attempt to (stress) test those hardware components which can be put through their paces artificially.
The most obvious examples are the RAM and HDD(s).
For the RAM, use the in-built memory diagnostics (run MDSCHED) or the 3rd-party memtest86 utility to run many hours worth of testing.
For hard drives, check whether CHKDSK /R finds any problems on the drive(s), notably "bad sectors".
Unreliable RAM, in particular, is deadly as far as software is concerned, and anything other than a 100% clear memory test result is cause for concern. Unfortunately, even a 100% clear result from the diagnostics utilities does not guarantee that the RAM is free from defects - only that none were encountered during the test passes.

7) As the last of the non-invasive troubleshooting steps, perform a "vanilla" reinstallation of Windows: just the OS itself without any additional applications, games, utilities, updates, or new drivers - NOTHING AT ALL that is not sourced from the Windows 7 disc.
Should that fail to mitigate the 0x124 problem, jump to the next steps.
If you run the "vanilla" installation long enough to convince yourself that not a single 0x124 crash has occurred, start installing updates and applications slowly, always pausing between successive additions long enough to get a feel for whether the machine is still free from 0x124 crashes.
Should the crashing resume, obviously the very last software addition(s) may be somehow linked to the root cause.
If stop 0x124 errors persist despite the steps above, and the hardware is under warranty, consider returning it and requesting a replacement which does not suffer periodic MCE events.
Be aware that attempting the subsequent hardware troubleshooting steps may, in some cases, void your warranty:

8) Clean and carefully remove any dust from the inside of the machine.
Reseat all connectors and memory modules.
Use a can of compressed air to clean out the RAM DIMM sockets as much as possible.

9) If all else fails, start removing items of hardware one-by-one in the hope that the culprit is something non-essential which can be removed.
Obviously, this type of testing is a lot easier if you've got access to equivalent components in order to perform swaps.

Should you find yourself in the situation of having performed all of the steps above without a resolution of the symptom, unfortunately the most likely reason is because the error message is literally correct - something is fundamentally wrong with the machine's hardware.

    7) As the last of the non-invasive troubleshooting steps, perform a "vanilla" re-installation of Windows: just the OS itself without any additional applications, games, utilities, updates, or new drivers - NOTHING AT ALL that is not sourced from the Windows 7 disc. =====================================================

Background Information:

Windows passes on the hardware error report in the form of a "stop 0x124" because it can't do anything else once the hardware has signaled an uncorrectable fault condition. In technical terms, the vast majority of stop 0x124 crashes correspond to "Machine Check Exceptions" (MCEs) issued by the processor to alert the software to the existence of a hardware problem. It's possible for drivers to indirectly induce hardware to register MCEs by "driving" in ways that are confusing to the hardware, but from a user's point of view that distinction is so subtle as to be invisible.

It is important to note that there are many different possible MCE triggers, and one machine's stop 0x124 is likely to be entirely different to another's. Hence, it is best not to place too much emphasis on very specialized ways in which other individuals have resolved their own 0x124 problems - the more exotic the other machine's MCE solution, the less likely it is to apply to your own setup.

It is possible - but painful - to interpret the hardware's error report. It's passed along in the so-called "MCi_Status" register, the contents of which are generally visible as bugcheck parameters 3 and 4 on the BSOD screen, as well as in the corresponding minidump.

The trouble is that the hardware's complaints are almost never "practical", in the sense that they would explain what is wrong in layman's terms and include a recommendation for how to fix it. Instead, it's esoteric stuff which is intended for hardware specialists and driver developers.

Interpreting MCi_Status Contents:

This is not a viable troubleshooting methodology for most cases of stop 0x124 crashes, both because of the procedure's complexity and the impracticality of the resultant output. It is included here for the sake of completeness, and in case anyone should wish to go to the extreme in an attempt to understand recalcitrant stop 0x124 crashes on their machine.

Interpreting the numbers a matter of consulting information published by Intel and AMD. The MCi_Status register contents are a bitmask, and each individual bit has a very specific meaning. Reference:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/cont...docs/24593.pdf
Machine Check Exception - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As an example, a hypothetical stop 0x124 crash may pass on an MCi_Status from the hardware whose contents are below:

1011001000000000000000000001100000000110000000000000111000001111

___6_________5_________4_________3_________2_________1

Interpretation is performed based on the position of each significant bit, starting from "63" on the far left and ending with bit "0" on the far right:

63: VAL - MCi_STATUS register valid
61: UC - Error uncorrected
60: EN - Error enabled
57: PCC - Processor context corrupt
36: component has received a parity error on the RS[2:0]# pins for a response transaction.
35: (Reserved)
27/26/25: Bus queue error type = "Response Parity Error" (011)

MCA [15:0]:
0000 1110 0000 1111
000F 1PPT RRRR IILL
F: "Normal" filtering (0)
PP: Generic (11)
T: Request did not time out (0)
RRRR: Generic Error (0000)
II: Other transaction (11)
LL: Memory hierarchy level "generic" (11)

We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

If you are overclocking stop.  (chances are if you dont know if you are, you are not)

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*Please upload them to a file sharing service like Skydrive or"Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

Please also run MSinfo32 and upload the output as well.

To run MSinfo32 please go to start>run>MSinfo32
Go to "file" "save" and upload the saved file with the DMPS
(Instructions for XP, Vista, Win 7, Win 8)
