I can not get MDT to install Apps, unexpected return code: 193

I must be doing something wrong in the setup.  I've tried both with, and without the switch.  I have another app that won't install either.  I thought this was a simple thing?  I had it working once, but not not now for whatever reason.

Reply:

Make sure you import the application to MDT, and it should be

msiexec /i ..... /QB or QN.

MSI needs the MSIexec, look at the link I attached. Importing applications into MDT is considered best practice for several reasons. You can look at http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Deploying-Windows-7-Part1.html, it applies to 2012 as well

DPM 2010 Administrator Console will not display fibre-attached library

My DPM 2010 server has been successfully managing two fibre-connected tape libraries, a Quantum Scalar i40-i80 and a Qualstar TLS-4222i, for the past year.  Our old building suffers power failures on a relatively frequent basis, and each time I have had trouble getting DPM to recognize the Qualstar tape library afterward, but eventually a combination of standing on my head and connecting things in different orders has brought the two of them back together, except the most recent.  Since the last outage three months ago, I have been trying without luck to get DPM to acknowledge the Qualstar's existance.  Windows sees the library and its two enclosed Sony tape drives.  The third-party utilities I have installed and run - Sony Tape Tool and HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (the drive in the Quantum library is an HP) - both see the Qualstar and its drives connected.  And DPM Management Shell lists the Qualstar library FIVE times, plus each of its enclosed drives once as a stand-alone drive.  I wonder whether removing those "false" records via power shell will make any difference in the DPM application's ability to see the hardware.  I have a recovery request that I cannot fulfill because I cannot establish communication between the software and hardware.  Please advise!  Thanks!

Carrie

Reply:
I wanted to add that DPM Power Shell sees the Qualstar tape library (all 5 instances) as offline, which is why I am not able to enable it from there.  I don't know, though, how much more "online" I can make it.  It is physically attached and powered on.

Disappointed

I just want to express my disappointment about Windows Server 2012 Essentials. Apparently Microsoft no longer considers email essential to an IT environment for a small business. I was really looking forward to an upgrade from my SBS 2003 but all I got is the creeping awareness that it is not going to happen.

I ended up virtualizing SBS 2003 in VMware on Windows 7 and I will probably be running that till the cows come home. It actually works quite nicely, backups are easy and I can run whatever else I want on that machine.

Still I would have liked the option to upgrade, unlocking more memory and modern hardware support and getting some nice new features on the side in return for something under a thousand Euros. But I am no longer a worthy customer, SBS has been abandoned.  :-(

SBS 2011 (which includes Exchange 2010) is still available to purchase, and will be until December 2013.

VMWare on Windows 7?? Really? Sounds like a great solution.

Not to mention Exchange 2013 can be added as a member server.  They do
consider email essential.  Talk to your customers as many of them
consider email on a cloud to be just fine as well.

Is this for a business that you are installing Win7/vmware combo?

Exchange Management Pack 14.03.0038.004 questions

Current exchange Management pack in our SCOM infra is 14.2.71.0 and exchange infra has 2010 SP1

Can i install the Exchange Management Pack 14.03.0038.004 for exchange 2010 SP1? bcoz in the MP guide says 14.03.0038.004 is for Maintenance release to coincide with the release of Exchange 2010 Service Pack 2

Please advice

Many Thanks

David

Reply:

There is no harm in installing this version for SP1.

There are in fact some improvements in there for the SP1 release as well. The quote you mentioned is just to signify that this management pack version is already compatible with Exchange SP2 although that software is not yet released.

As Always check out the MP guide and search the technetblogs for experiences installing it:

Hi CRAZYITAUS, I would say you should install this version of MP (14.03.0038.004) as many issues were solved here.  You can use it with  Exchange 2010 SP1 but better to update to Exchange 2010 SP2 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28190) which is supported as well by this MP.

Concerns and problems with W8 -lost programs from W7 and don't like XBox Microsoft products-

I have a new Toshiba Satellite P855 and loaded W8 thinking it would be better than W7. It's like having to learn French and not so intuitive. My wife hates it.

I finally figured out how to turn it off...tonight.

I don't have sound. Mute button doesn't help but I did go on a forum to find out how to use the volume control. I would test it but no sound.

I hate the Xbox "music store". I will remove it but will I have to install another program to listen to my music? Microsoft games are not good. I took that off. I don't want Xbox on my computer. Will I have to buy a photo software package to edit my photos? I guess so.

On another computer I did a Windows upgrade and lost years of music. No more upgrades on my old devices! Is that something Microsoft is doing to everyone now?

So much was incompatible with W8 and was removed from this computer. I lost a really great solitaire program and Xbox games are really crap.

I figured it out after having COMMERCIALS popping up all over. W8 is a Advertisement delivery system like TV is now.

I'm an old guy who's been using a computer since the 80s. The internet will be ruined just like TV was very soon. All great things must come to an end I guess.

+1 The ads are really a travesty. It makes the Windows 8 look cheap. Do people at Microsoft have kids? If so...are they really comfortable using Windows 8 when it shows all the sexually inappropriate store content to their family...when all they want to do is listen to their music? Even the screensaver shows inappropriate content that we can't change. And yes...the majority of the Metro-based apps are crap compared to the desktop versions.

Daulton,

As you have discovered, Windows 8 is a whole new world - one that I think is more suited to tablets/casual use then offering a comprehensive solution to everyone.

For sound -it is possible your hardware may not have a Windows 8 driver. Check control panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager, and look for question marks

For apps. I am just ignoring the WIndows Store for now. Search the internet the way you have always done and download apps the "old fashioned way"...lol, for example, PAINT.NET is a good freeware image editing program.

The games are a tough problem. Unfortunately the built-in Windows 7 games are no longer there and the ones available from the WindowsStore have a different feel and gameplay. I don't think there is an easy fix for that. I have downloaded dozens of solitare programs and have yet to find one I really like.. perhaps a decent one will appear in the Windows store eventually.

Mark

Also - I recommend you do backups of your music and files. Purchasing a external USB drive is pretty cheap right now and having that backup is invaluable. At one point I thought I lost ALL of my family photos and genealogy data. I ended up being able to retrieve it by purchasing a $89 software program (best money I ever spent) and I not back up to 2 different devices (just in case)

Calls placed on hold from Lync Attendant drop after 30 seconds?

This is only through the Attendant. If our receptionist places a call on hold through her Polycom CX600, it holds indefinitely. When she places a call on hold via the Lync Attendant, it drops after 30 seconds.

We are going to try to remove the Music on Hold and see if that works (as described in previous threads).

Reply:

Hi Todd,

There are issues/limitations when using an Aries phone with the Lync Attendant Console.  It may be best to let the receptionist use a non-Aries phone like a Polycom CX300.

Hi Todd,

This might be a bit late but I came across the same issue and  the fix is described in http://jamesbotham.wordpress.com/2011/07/16/lync-2010-hold-issue-with-cisco-call-manager-expressuc500/

You need disabled RTCPActiveCalls and RTCPCallsOnHOld

Set-CsTrunkConfiguration –Identity <Trunk-Identity> -RTCPActiveCalls $False -RTCPCallsOnHold $False -EnableSessionTimer $True

Whilst looking at the monitoring report logs I noticed the following error:

"32 – Call terminated on mid-call media failure where both endpoints are internal"

which lead me to Jame's article. I don't quite understand yet why this only affects Lync Attendant as calls handled by desk phones and the Lync client can be put on hold for more than 30 seconds.

Reading the explanations from a few articles (http://memphistech.net/?p=169) having the RTCP settings enabled in the Trunk tells the mediation server to look for RTCP packets from the PSTN gateway and drop the calls if nothing is received in 30 seconds.

The funny thing about my issue is that  by default parked calls do not provide any on-hold music unless they are placed on hold via the Lync attendant! By following the logic above then I should be seeing the problem for calls handled by the Lync client/desk phones and NOT Lync Attendant !!

In any case, making the changes above fixed the problem (The EnableSession timer setting is to guarantee that calls are terminated after 30 minutes if not activity is registered)

I'll let you know if I find more info on this

The last time I looked you couldn't use .Net 4.0 with SharePoint 2010.  You can read more about it here:

Affirmative, you cannot use .Net 4.0 with sharepoint 2010.  If you want .Net 4.0+ you can use SharePoint 2013.

If you try to build sharepoint with .Net 4.0 sharepoint will not load your dll's, more so IIS and the Application Pool will not load the dlls, you will get errors.

Can I determine user team sites on the navigation menu.

We are currently setting up a sharepoint site within our school. As the pupil logs in to the sharepoint site they are directed to a page that everyonne can see. Each pupil is a member of a site collection (team site) which is there class name. I would like to have a link on the navigation bar which point them to there own team site. How can i do this? I want sharepoint to determine which page to take the pupil to.

I hope this makes sense. Any help would be greatful

Reply:

Navigation in SharePoint 2010 is primarily focused on Navigating INSIDE a site collection.  By default you won't see links to other site collections in the Navigation.  You can add External links manually, but then they won't be security trimmed and everyone will see them.

Hi Paul,

What I mean is when the pupil logs in they are all directed to the same page. Like a static homepage. But then from there I want each pupil to be able to go to there team site and i want a link on the homepage which directs them to it. But how can sharepoint determine which pupil goes where?

Hope this makes sense.

Reply:
You could do it with custom code, but I'm not aware of any way to do it out of the box.  That is assuming that the static homepage is stored in a SharePoint site somewhere.

I don't know the full answer, but one bit that may help is to have a month calc for the item.

=RIGHT("00"&TEXT(({SomeDate}),"mm"),2)&"-"&TEXT(({SomeDate}),"mmmm")

Once you have that, you can use it for Viewing, Grouping, Criteria, etc.

I have successfully added a code activity each to send an email after a task has been approved or rejected from the DMDynamic workflow. Now i also have to edit the default task notification email.
