How to order files and folders in Documents Library

How to order files and folders in Documents Library

This is for a customer. I fix PCs for a living.

Customer (Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit OS SP1) wants files to appear before folders and both groups in date order (latest dates higher up). for ANY folder. I mention the My Documents folder or Documents library as an example. But the problem is the same for Pictures library etc. anything that has a "library" new Win 7 feature.

For the REAL EXPLORER FOLDER (not the library in the Win 7 Start menu) i.e C:\users\UserName\My Documents the solution is simple.

View>Details
Sort by>Date Modified
Sort by Descending
All above done in the time order shown (View details first and so on).

But when I do EXACTLY the same sequence in the Documents **Library* it does NOT work. The result is Folders above files (WRONG, NOT WHAT MY CUSTOMER WANTS) and everything in date order (GOOD).

Please tell me how to get the desired result in the Documents Library (or the Pictures Library) noting I have shown above how to do this for any REAL EXPLORER FOLDER, yet the same sequence does NOT work for the associated library.

I also want to note that the libraries have a THIRD option Arrange by that the real folder does not have (in case I need to use that). Both the real folder and the library also have a Group by (set to none or nothing selected) and Group by (using experimentation) does NOTHING like I want to do here and NEITHER DOES arrange by (as far as I can tell).

Regards-Mike

Because of the Win32 Hierachical structure files cannot be ontop of folders. Only folders then files. There are flaws in the explorer system for windows 7.

Best solution is to try a third party program. I dont reccomend it though

Vishdafish,

Did you read my question ?? I said CLEARLY that files could be before folders and in the order I want  in  C:\users\UserName\My Documents !!! Hence your reply is 100% WRONG.

And my question is about the Documents library which is not the same as a folder like C:\users\UserName\My Documents.

Just a suggestion, Mike. Telling someone who has taken the time to try to assist you that their reply "is 100% WRONG", is a good way to discourage others who might otherwise consider trying to help you.

This is a community, not a made to order solution service. People volunteer their time, and you get the benefit of their advice - for free. The advice is not perfect, nor is it guaranteed to be. But it can be helpful, even if you don't get the answer in the form you want it.

Put it this way - if you treated your clients as condescendingly as you treated Vishdafish, you'd have trouble keeping their business. Just treet people here with the same respect, and you'll find it a more rewarding experience.

A moderator of the forum removed the flag. And it looks like an admin removed the other person who was in this thread.

Thanks for apologizing Al. It's easy to offend in forums, since there's no emotion behind typed words.

Ed Price: Thank you.

Some replies I have received on the same topic in the Experts Exchange forum suggest it is IMPOSSIBLE to do what I ask here.

Hence an alternate solution is to make the Documents link in the Win 7 Start Menu go to C:\users\UserName\My Documents instead of to the Documents library. And ditto for the Pictures link in the Start Menu. Music is less important as it is managed by iTunes and my customer does NOT directly interface with it. I have also changed the defaults for Outlook attachments, IE 9 downlioads, Word, Excel and Powerpoint to go to C:\users\UserName\My Documents.

So if we could get the Start Menu links to point to the User Profile folders (even if each one must be individually changed) we would have a complete solution.

hide created user in AD from going to global address list

hi all,

if i created a user on AD 2008, it will go to global address list right away even if the exchange 2010 mail is not yet created, and then if i want to hide it, i will go to exchange 2010 mailbox properties and hide from there.  but i created some user that don't need to have email but their contact info go to global address list.  how do i prevent it?

thanks for any comment you may add.

Reply:
You can prevent it by not using the Copy feature in ADUC when you create new users.
Doing that will also give the new created users some Exchange attributes, like showInAddressBook for example, if the account you uses as a template had that attribute set.

Martina Miskovic

so is it possible to remove it from the existing GAL list?

You need to modify (clear the values) one the user accounts affected using Attribute Editor in ADUC or with ADSIEdit.

it is the "showInAddressBook" attributes, by clearing it, the name will dissappear in outlook address list.

Office11 + Win server 2008 r2 + OS X Lion

Hi,

In our environment we are using Windows server 2008 r2. Our Macintosh computers are outside the domain, but users authenticate with their AD-accounts to the server shares where their common files are stored. OS on the Macs is 10.7.2 and we use Office11.

Now we have a strange situation where the permissions on i.e a folder are correct, but when a user opens a word-document on the share, edits it and saves it, the permissions are wiped and only this users AD-account + admins have access to the document. With other file types it workes fine it seems (we tested with excel and PDF). When we reset the permissions so that child permissions on the docs are removed and restored to folder permissions, ofc everyone can access every document, until they edit and save it. Then it all starts over and the user who made a change first "owns" the document and the others get an error that it is write protected.

We have tried using SMB and CIFS.

This started with moving the files to a win 2008 server (with a DFS-share that we dont use for the macs). Before we just used a NAS-share and that worked fine with same OS (+10.5 & 10.6) and Office. Any ideas?

Hello,

to understand the permissions correct. Share has FC for all users?

And the NTFS permissions are FC for Domain Admins, R&E for Domain Users and the Security group for mentioned problem users have Modify?

And it is not that some users are changing permissions on the file/folder where they have the Modify permission?

Is this only with existing documents in the folder or also if you create a new one inside the folder with rightclick and choosing "New Word Document.docx" for example?

Attribute flow planning tools

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if anybody is using a tool that is used to plan/document attribute flow between ex. AD, HR, FIM portal, etc, etc.
The different attributes between different systems doesn`t always have the same naming..

I have tried some SQL database planning tools, but they are not capable of mapping single attributes, only tables..

Any suggestions..

Reply:
I use a big spreadsheet. Attribute names (e.g. "first name") down the left, each MA gets columns and info about the relevant attribute that's mapped filled in. Notes/Examples on the end.

Return EXIT codes from SSIS

I have a stored procedure which calls the SSIS package to execute. I used this command to return the status of the package:

DECLARE @returncode int

    EXEC @returncode = xp_cmdshell @dtsExecCmd

One of my programmers only want me to return integers as error codes. my stored procedure currently returns bunch of lines to show the progress of the SSIS package. how can i change the procedure to just return the exit codes, like 0, 1, 2, 3,4,5,6 and nothing else.

Most likely you've got a child with two parents in a defined natural hierarchy or you have two records with the same KeyColumns but different names. Best way is to use the Dimension Health Check functionality in BIDSHelper to resolve the issue. The tool will produce a report of all dimension members that will generate errors when a dimension is processed.

thread

Ciao a tutti,

Ringraziando Ruggiero dell'iniziativa, vi auguro buon data collecting a tutti!

Introduzione

I Data Collector

I Report

Network sharing files, Microsoft office 2010 SrcPck1 Windows 7 x64

First thanks for checking this discussion..We have a problem in our company, it's related to opening/saving office files. All of those files we have them on a server 2003, most of our computers have windows 7 x64 with microsoft office 2010 Service Pack 1. We are having problems with Windows 7, Windows XP work like a charm. I'm trying to find a solution for this problem. When we open files of any size it takes a long time to open and to save. The process of downloading it goes quick but the process of opening the file up it takes a long time and saving is the same. It takes a long time. I have tried many things, but i wanted to created a thread/discussion so i can start from scratch. Please let me know if anybody out there had the same issue and possibly there is a solution about this issue on windows 7.

Hi,

Obviously You can exclude any network's issues. I recently made a post in another thread with the same issue.

What happens if You temporarily turn of the anti-virus software and then open the Excel files?

Does the list of add-ins seems OK, no entry with the name "MISSING". Uncheck all checked add-ins, then put them back stepwise and open the Excel files?

Any difference between XP and 7 when it comes to the printer set up? If yes, change and try to open/save Excel files.

How larger (in MB) is each Excel file?

Kind regards, Dennis (http://xldennis.wordpress.com/)

Windows Server 2003 Standard

I know this might be a stupid question. I remember installing Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2. But when I check properties it doesn't indicate R2? With Windows Server 2008 I know it indicates if its R2 or not. So how can I determine. I'm testing software compatibility on Operating System.

Hello,

did you also use the second installation disk from the R2 set during installation or only the first one?

1. Right click on My Computer, select Properties, General.

2. Input winver in Start menu, Run box, press enter key.

Did you removed the DC with tombstone issues or it is working now? If DC has crossed tombstone period its better to demote it else you might see symptoms of lingering objects too if DC passed tombstone period is still present in domain.

Have you point this XP machine to the local DNS server only? Temporarily, stop the firewall services on the client as well as on the DC and see if it works. You can also analyze the Netsetup log in windows\debug folder on the problem machine for related help during domain join issues.

In a nutshell, i'd like to run a verification run on all tapes on certain library

(It's a compliancy thing..) but the script i made keeps on crashing the command shell.

What do i do wrong?

$LIB = Get-DPMLibrary -DPMServerName *DPMServerName*
$TPList = Get-Tape -DPMLibrary $LIB[1]
foreach ($tp in $TPList)
{
$rplist = Get-RecoveryPoint -Tape $tp
foreach ($rp in $rplist)
{
Test-DPMTapeData -RecoveryPoint $rp
}
}

All help is appreciated!

Hi Antii,

The script seems to be correct.

When you run, do you see any any Verification job kicking off via DPM 2010 Administrator Console, Monitoring/Jobs?

I would add a $rp before Test-DPMTapeData -RecoveryPoint $rp. With that you can see which verification is about to start before PowerShell crashes on you.

  $LIB = Get-DPMLibrary -DPMServerName (&hostname)  $TPList = Get-Tape -DPMLibrary $LIB[4]  foreach ($tp in $TPList)  {  $rplist = Get-RecoveryPoint -Tape $tp  foreach ($rp in $rplist)  {  write-host ('{0,-15} {1,-30}' -f $rp.userfriendlyname, $rp.datasource) -f yellow  Test-DPMTapeData -RecoveryPoint $rp  write-host; write-host  }  }

I updated the script to show you which tape the data is in when we get the crash (tape label shows in green)

  $LIB = Get-DPMLibrary -DPMServerName (&hostname)  $TPList = Get-Tape -DPMLibrary $LIB[1]  foreach ($tp in $TPList)  {  	write-host $tp.barcode -f green  	$rplist = Get-RecoveryPoint -Tape $tp  	foreach ($rp in $rplist)  	{  		write-host ('{0,-15} {1,-30}' -f $rp.userfriendlyname, $rp.datasource) -f yellow  		Test-DPMTapeData -RecoveryPoint $rp  		write-host; write-host  	}  }

Hi Antti,

It looks like we are into something...

I was able to get my PowerShell to crash when trying to verify a Volume data source from two different tapes.

I'll check on this later on and post an update...

Hi!

Have you found any workarounds to this yet?

I've tried with different combinations (Remote Console from Win7 machine etc) but always the PowerShell crashes...

Enable Domain Admin to Restart/ Shut Down Guest Server

First, thanks for looking at this.  I am having trouble letting the domain administrators shut down guest servers in my Hyper V environment.  I believe  that this is probably a group policy issue, and was looking for a learned soul to point me in the right direction.

FIXED -- Not Sure what I did -- When I was editing GPO I used /Force so I don't think it was a  propagation issue-- bu t in any case Now I can log on and shutdown.  Still, I was a bit surprised-it seems like the default behavior for a machine joining a domain would be for ALL functions to fall under the permissions of Domain Administrators. Of course, what do I know?

THANKS AGAIN

Glenn

1) In hyper V Manager, when I try to shut down the guest machine I get an error that the administrator does not have rights to do this.   Both console and remote desktop connections.

2) When I log into the guest machine through hyper V as a domain administrator, the RESTART and SHUT DOWN options are ghosted out (not enabled) at the start  menu

3) when I log into the guest machine through hyper V as local machine administrator, RESTART and SHUT DOWN are available.

I have tried adding a domain administrator account to the local servers administrator group, still no love.  And I have fiddled with the domain GPO, but I am not really a networking guy any more and my skills are woefully outdated.

Configuration :

1) Domain Controller with Active Directory on host machine  (2008 R2)

2) Sharepoint/SQL on guest virtual machine (2008 R2)

3) I added Sharepoint Server to the Domain successfully

Thanks for any suggestions/how tos !!!!!!

Windows Update doesn't work with TMG firewall client software!

I have installed TMG 2010 and it's domain controller. Well my using internet with TMG's firewall client software, everything working fine but they're unable to download automatic windows update via firewall client but when I enter proxy of my TMG's server in internet explorer then it starts working. Why is this happening? Major problem is we're using Web based CCTV DVR softwares so that's why I can't use proxy server otherwise DVR will not work. The only way is use SecureNat or Firewall Client, But SecureNAT isn't usefule sometimes and less security that's the reason I'm using Firewall Client. Please any help will deffinitely appreciated.

Hi,

Thank you for the post.

“everything working fine but they're unable to download automatic windows update via firewall client” – what error message do you receive from the problematic machines? And what is TMG live logging tell?

This article explains how you can do it in TSQL:

http://wiki.lessthandot.com/index.php/Split_A_String_By_Using_A_Number_Table

But my guess is that the .NET version is a bit easier to implement in a SSIS script component:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/b873y76a.aspx (only 1 line of code, yay)

Hi Prashanth,

If suppose you are using SSIS for this then following will work.

Use FindString and Substring Functions in Derived Column.

For Col1Expr ::  SUBSTRING(Col,1,FINDSTRING(Col,"~",1))

For Col2Expr :: SUBSTRING(Col,FINDSTRING(Col,"~",1)+1,FINDSTRING(Col,"~",2))

Etc....

I think it may help you.

Thanks,

Hi

Use the Text qualifier as "~" in the File connection manager, Of course we don't have this existing delimiter, need to go t the columns options, set the Qualifier as ~ then reset the columns.

You will get all as individual columns

This will be a maintenance nightmare when column positions can change of when columns are deleted/added.

That won't work, as the number of columns differs from row to row. SSIS can't handle this in SQL Server 2005 & 2008. Support for this functionality is included in the release of SQL Server 2012.

Hi Koen,

Yes, I thought all the rows are having equal columns, in the case of not equal columns need to write TSQL or C# program.

Problem with IBM Bladecenter Cluster using V7000 SAN

We are currently having a problem with a Bladecenter HS22 HA Cluster (3 servers running Windows 2008 R2) which are linked through mulitpath FCs to V7000 SAN using two IBM SAN24B-4 FC Switches.  All firmware and drivers have been updated to the latest recommended by IBM (Qlogic CIOv FC cards in blades, SAN24 switches, V7000, etc.).  This includes the current Microsoft MPIO drivers, etc. for our hardware configuration.

The problem is that our disk I/O performance is fine to the SAN until we test failover.   We shutdown one server and the disk I/O from remaining blade servers to the SAN goes from the typicall 200-300 MBytes per second to  6-60 MBytes per second.

Our IBM Partner has worked with IBM on this issue with no solutions so far.  Everything seems to be fine in the hardware.  The thing is we also have two P720 IBM servers running AIX going to the same SAN and their I/O is not affected by the failover so I beileve it is something related to Microsoft (Hyper-V, MS drivers, etc.) .

Any recommendation on things we should look at to troubleshoot would be helpful.  Sorry, if I haven't provided enough information here but unfortunately I can only provide what I know which is very little on the technical details of the setup.

Thanks.

Hi,

How did you identify the slow symptom?

By the way, as you mentioned that there were 3 servers and you got the slow issue after you shutdown one server(I named it server01 arbitrarily and others are server02 and server 03). So I would like to know whether you get the same issue if you shutdown server02 or server03.

Best Regards,

Vincent Hu
