Performance Issue while executing MA
I am facing the performance issue while executing MAs in MIIS 2003. We are executing the Full import and Full synchronization profile of the MA that is connected with ADAM. This MA has custom filter rule and joins the records with other source (having 317 k records) based on the 15 join rules and provision the matched records in other MAs connector space for exporting. This MAs FIFS (Full import and full synchronization) profile is taking almost 24 hrs. Source of the MA is ADAM (Active Directory Application Mode) and it has almost 550 k Records.
2nd MA which is just importing the records from ADAM (Active Directory Application Mode having 550k records) having custom filter rule and project all the active records to Metaverse Object and from their provision them to connector space of another MA. It's FIFS is taking almost 20 hrs.
Please recommend any performance tuning tips for MIIS server / database etc.
Thanks
Adi

You're talking about Full Import and Full sync run profiles...
Is that the only type of run profile you're using? What about delta import and/or delta syncs? How do they perform? What's your schedule on full vs delta (for example full run profiles once a week, and delta daily or even higher frequence...)
BTW: which build of MIIS/ILM are you running?
If you're looking to tune the MIIS Server / database: search the forum for capacity planning / database maintenance, ... (like this post that Brad Turner initiated on capacity planning...)
Also check the MIIS 2003 Active Documentation roadmap: quote : "Want the optimal server configuration to get the best performance out of your MIIS 2003 installation, read the MIIS 2003 Capacity Planning Guide (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=55412)."

BTW: could you give more info about your SQL Server? Things I would want to know (and avoid!) is to have it use virtualized storage (i.e. the DB and LOG files are on the HD of a virtual machine). That will defnitely kill you.
Also, would you have some more info on the timing: do you see e.g. that your 1st 10000 records are going very fast (like in 2/3 minutes) and then performance is gradualy degrading?

I created a new VM with "Vista" as OS for Windows 7, and indeed a 'virtyal audio machine' was installed, but this does not solve the audio issue, since no microphone input is possible and consequently I cannot test WSR under W7 in the VM machine. The whole installation is therefore useless. I haven't found any way to force the OS to recognize the connected hardware (microphones).

After install I had no sound on music player or microphone. After I made sure correct audio device (driver) was installed, I had to go to controll panel, hardware/sounds, then sound/ change system sounds. Click on installed components (speakers, mic, etc) then either properties (speakers) or levels (mic) and turn up volume sliders. Hope that works for you.

Since the error message cites your DVD drive, I'd suggest re-downloading the ISO file. Then, burn it at a slower speed to a good, quality DVD.
Beyond that, you can check the setup log files in the Windows\Panther sub-directory to get a better idea of why it won't install.

You may want to also check your memory. Although the Windows 7 DVD comes with a built in memory checker, a better solution with a more thorough check and better visual feedback is the free Memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com/. Check your memory and ensure that it passes all tests (it can take quite some time). This is not say this is your problem, but you can eliminate a potential source of your error.

I have it working
Woo Hoo! I have it working.
Thanks Michael Michael for putting the post out and Onur for answering my posts.
Here is what I ended up having to do..
I rebuilt my SCVMM Server and Ops Mgr server.
Installed Ops Mgr 2007 and straight to the SP1 (I set the same domain admin level account for all the services here since I am not an OpsMgr expert).
Imported the required Management packs.
Then went to SCVMM
Installed the Ops Mgr admin console and upped that to SP1
rebooted everything
Then at the Ops Mgr server I opened the Local Administrators security group and added the Computer account of my SCVMM server (you have to select 'Computers' in the AD browser)
I then rebooted Ops Mgr again.
Then I went to the SCVMM server and did the setup under Administration
I then added my Virtual Center server.
I then enabled PRO on my VC cluster (HA and DRS are not enabled in VC)
(oh, SCVMM items showed up in Operations Manager - cool)
I then added my Hyper-V cluster.
Things got better as I pushed out OpsMgr agents onto my windows hosts and the SCVMM server.
Then I noticed that my PRO Tips window was popping up - but would be empty (I am not sitting there staring at it the entire time).
I happened to catch it one time - and noticed that the action disappeared if the situation disappered.
(I have a host that is processor spiking for some strange reason - no VMs running either)
I would love it if the PRO Tips were also available for non-clustered VMs and Hosts. It would give me better coverage of my environment.

That's great Brain.
Have a quick question and I am sure you can help me.
I am trying to implemeted the protip recovery action with powershell.
I would like to pass hostname and protip id into my powershell shell script.
Could you tell me how I can get these parameters at the run time in recovery section ?
I would really appreciate if you can paste some part of code.
Thanks a million.

The trick is in OpsMgr, click Administration -> Administrator -> Verify the group that is in "Operations Manager Administrators" -> add the VMM Server to that group in AD. -> Reboot VMM Server -> It works! (and there will be much rejoicing! yeah!)

Print Spooler after printer install, what to do?
Situation:
New x64 install.
Already had 2 of my printers and Fax and XLS printers installed.
Tried to install an HP Deskjet 820Cse, which seemed to work (did in x86)
Set the new printer to default and tried to print--Error locking up system.
Logged out using CTRL-ALT-DEL.
Logged back in and Print Spooler would not start and all printers were missing in the Devices and Printers box.
Restart did not clear the problem so Print Spooler still would not start.
I started in safe mode but could not delete any printers, since none showed up.
I then went to regedit and deleted all instances of the 820Cse I could find.
System started normally after that and the prior installed printers returned to the Devices and Printers box.
Some questions:
Is the driver offered in the add printer wizard always going to be an x64 driver on an x64 system? If not, how do I tell the difference?
Is there just one registry entry that could be removed instead of all to get back to normal, such as the default printer selection, and where is it?
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows <- maybe

One point to remember: when it comes to networking, filesystems matter not. Mac, *nix, and Windows all use standard SMB shares; therefore, the different filesystems among the three don't matter. Permissions and general settings for the shares are what matter.

Nvidia nForce Driver: SMBus
Recently completed a Windows 7 beta install on an older AMD based system that uses a NVidia nForce 4 chipset (Asus A8N-E motherboard, Opteron 180 CPU, 2GB RAM, ATI Firegl 3100, 250GB/500GB HDs, additional 1394a and USB adapters, and Samsung DVD-RW). Install was flawless with one exception...the chipset SMBus driver failed to load from the default drivers provided by Windows 7 and Windows Update.
The solution was easy. Downloaded the current NVidia nForce drivers and manually installed the Vista 64-bit driver. All devices working well.
Thus far, I am impressed with the quality and stability of the beta release itself. Much better than NT5/Win2000, XP, and Vista betas at this stage of the game.
Have a HOOAH day!

VIA and SIS and SATA-drivers in general
Then I found a field 'add driver' and I downloaded some (Vista-)VIA 4in1 plattform driver. This driver told me to be incompatible. Anyhow since then Windows 7 worked fine. Seemed to work fine.
In fact the windows expierence level is dissaponting for harddisk is 3 all others are better.
Even more problems shows the sea-tool from seagate. It cannot read any value from the disk, except of the name. In the device manager it is impossible to enable caching.
In my view the should be appropriate drives on the installation DVD for all intel, amd/ati, nvidia, sis, via and other chipsets for PATA, SATA, ATAPI, ISA-RAID, SATA-RAID, SAS and some SCSI adaptors with all features of the chipset. If the grafic-adapter doesn't work, any VGA-modus will do, if there is no access to the harddisk, problems are much bigger.
There can't be only one ISA-driver on DVD like it was on Vista, Windows XP, and before.

At least Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 let you browse for a driver at the 'add driver' point.
You can search USB drives, existing hard drives, or take out the install DVD and temporarily insert another disk.
New drivers are being published all the time. Keep looking. Try the motherboard manufacturer, the chipset manufacturer, etc.

Of course it is Beta, but I remember the computer of a Friend. He has a Win-XP maschine from Medion a German discount store. On this computer the reinstall failed because of its VIA-PN800 chipset. XP asked: please insert disk1
and microsoft disabled any funktion to add a path or use an USB-stick as a: - drive. Now it is better, USB is allowed and recognised as USB. But if my system has crashed I have no internet. So I have no driver on the external drive.
Here windows 7 don't exist:
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
My point is, if I have an expensive desktop with X58 chipset ore one from nVidia, drivers are shipped by microsoft. If the computer was on sale it's my challenge to find VIA-drivers or from Silicon Integrated Systems SIS.
Sound drivers from Analog Devices are some times hard to get too.
------------------------------------
Disk Management utility finally a viable feature
In all honesty, I was completely shocked, surprised and impressed. Not words I've used in a sentence with Microsoft in a long time (if ever).
Certain programs dont start up automatically in Windows 7
I have a couple of programs that I would like to automatically startup when Windows 7 starts up.
1. Fraps
2. Steam
3. Speedfan
For some reason they wont startup automatically when Win7 starts up. I have selected the option within each program for it to start when windows starts, where this option is available, or creating a shortcut and adding it to the startup menu, but nothing works.
Any ideas?
Thx

Successful Install with XP Home Dual Boot on a A7N8X Deluxe
Motherboard: A7N8X Deluxe ver 2
Processor: AMD Athlon 3200XP 2200 (overclocked to 2300)
Ram: 2GB
Graphics: ATI 9800 SE
Soundcard: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
Hard drives: 4 Hard Drives IDE 250 and 320, SATA 250 and 250
Windows XP Home Installed on my IDE 250 drive
Windows 7 32bit Installed on one of my SATA 250 drives which I partitioned with 90GB Space.
To install Windows 7 on the SATA drive partition, I used the original driver from my motherboard installation disc for XP (Silicon Image Sil 3112 SATA Raid Controller), this works fine and is updated once windows 7 is up and running & connected through Windows update.
To get the Ethernet Controllers working, go to Device Manager in control panel and click on the highlighted ones (with yellow exclamation mark) and update the driver for each, search for it yourself and uncheck the box so all drivers are displayed, under Nvidia, use the 'Nvidia nforce Networking Controller' and from the original motherboard Installation disc install the '3Com 3C920B-EMB Intergrated Fast Ethernet Controller driver' in the same search for it yourself method as above, the 3Com Controller I am using for my connection and this is working fine.
I have not tried the onboard sound as I have a Soundblaster X-Fi card and the Windows 7 beta driver is available to download from soundblaster, this is working very well.
When playing back a DVD this sound is noticeably better and crisper in 'Windows Media Player' and is slightly distorted at higher sound levels in 'Windows Media Centre'.
The Ati 9800 SE driver automatically updated using windows update as Windows 7 found this straight away on Installation. This is also very good.
Just had one small problem, windows 7 updated my CPU driver and I had one Blank black screen on re-boot, another re-boot solved this and is working fine now, no errors and stable both switching from XP and windows 7 from re-booting. It seems faster and smoother than Xp, I am impressed.
Have both the Epson Stylus R800 and Epson Perfection 4870 Photo connected by firewire, vista drivers do not pick this up, so might have to wait for epson to sort this out.
Windows 7 does a very good job and very stable on my slowest old computer.

Note that I have 2 Nvidia GF-8600GTX cards in SLI mode (just got the driver for W7 that enabled SLI from Windows Update), so this is a good test platform for gaming machine performance with Windows 7.
I highly recomend a dual boot installation of Windows 7!!! Give it it's own drive if you have an extra one.

Virtual CD / DVD Rom's
I was unable to get Magic Disc running, as it caused my computer to be unbootable. To remove, I had to revert to the last settings that worked, boot into safe mode, uninstall the driver and then uninstall the software, though it took me a good hour of messing around to get that far.
Daemon tools was similar issue.
I had tried a few others without success as well as found many others confirmed not working on other forums.
The one I was able to get (partially) working, was SlySoft Vritual CloneDrive, however there are still some speed and similar related issues.

Gadgets and other UI options - why is MS so slow
Gadgets are cool but why are they so limited? You only get one option if your lucky in the settings tab so I find myself going for freeware apps instead when it comes to things like calendars, sticky notes or to do lists.
I also wonder why we can not lock a gadget in place and have to see the close button every time the cursor goes across them. I recently downloaded Stardock Fences and in its first release you can already lock content, change it shape and appearance etc... why cant MS do this!
When it comes to the Windows UI, MS offer such basic options, you can never customise anything that much. It seems such a simple thing that would make Windows 7 a must have :(

When MS will fix it ?
Why "Aero Peek" use now the Key Combo Winkey + "Space" and not a new Key Combo ?
The new Sidebar in W7 has no "visibilityChanged" Event(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb267257(VS.85).aspx), good Ideas like "change the Background from all Gadgets at once", are not possible in W7.
The Vista Sidebar works better on XP as on Vista, this Bug: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B930277
applies not to Vista Sidebar on XP.
There are many WMI Bugs in Vista and W7, that's all are Facts because Developer can support XP for best.

No Sidebar is right, but Gadgets are not a Part of Desktop.
The Desktop is a Window hosted by Explorer.exe(Shell), Gadgets are Windows hosted by Sidebar.exe
Only XP has a "Active Desktop" and can integrate "html" Windows into the Desktop really.
The Step to Sidebar.exe and turn off "Active Desktop" is good, the Step Sidebar.exe has no Sidebar is complicated and need a perfect Window handling in all Situations.
A Shoot of my Monitor(can't say Desktop, because it was lost after Explorer.exe crashed): http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/8014/26829558nr9.jpg
No Taskbar, no Desktop Icons or Context Menu, no Taskmanager, but Gadgets are working.
The Wallpaper is only a Memory Space, that the Video Controller shows, not a Part of the real Desktop Window.
------------------------------------
Reply:
The same Reason, Gadgets and Icons are not really concurrent in Space.
The Sidebar.exe must say to Explorer.exe, I need Space LH and/or RH for Gadgets.
