Size of computer monitor for easier readability of Word documents

I am a medical transcriptionist. I type reports in Word. I have the zoom up to 200% because I need to see the entire page of each report when I type it and so can't go higher. I'm thinking of getting a bigger computer monitor so the words/font would be larger. What type and size do you suggest? I'm not interested in color or games, but just having the type larger. I've read that sometimes a 30" screen (which I WAS going to purchase) made the viewing harder because of pixels. Is this so?

I have looked all over the Internet for answers to this problem and have not been successful to date.

20-24" is good enough, but it is well, when the monitor has a pivot view, to rotate the screen vertical.

Your's VGA Card propably has short cut to turnover 90deg.

If You have wall space U can take monitor's leg off and use Vesa wholes to screw him to the wall (static).

At 200%, a standard A4 or Letter page would be about 23" top to bottom. To see this, even in full screen view on a portrait monitor you must already have a 27" screen. The gain by swapping to a 30" monitor would be limited but if it was of good enough quality you would be able to zoom to about 220%. Only you can say whether the benefit to you would be worth what would probably be a significant cost.

You should also consider how much area your eye can really scan comfortably. I have a 24" monitor in portrait orientation and I think having to look much higher above my desk would negate much of the gain from any increased size.

I have a 30" monitor but I don't use it in portrait format, just the standard horizontal format. If I was to use it in portrait layout the screen width would be approximately 16" which seems to me becomes the limiting factor regarding zoom if my goal was large character size. A standard 8.5 X 11 letter size page when zoomed to just 150% takes up the entire width of the screen when you allow for the vertical ruler and scroll bar of the Word window (again this is on my 30" monitor turned to a portrait orientation.)

Resolution is not an issue on a 30" monitor ... assuming it's of excellent quality. I run mine at 2048 X 1280 and it can go as high as 2560 X 1600.

So the bottom-line is what's the objective? See the entire page or have the largest character size or both? I agree with Tony that having a 30" in portrait layout would probably be a neck strainer ... that is unless you are sitting farther back from it, but again, what's the objective?

One final data point, a character in 12 point font displayed on my 30" monitor at a 150% zoom factor is approximately 1/4 inch high.

Issue reading 'Security' EventLog entries for Standard user Privileges on Windows 7

Hi All,

I am trying to read the Windows Security Event log by notification in C# application.

Below is sample line of code, but when I run it on Windows 7 with a standard user I get an Exception:

EventLog _eventlog = new EventLog("Security"); //Monitor on the Security events   _eventlog.EntryWritten += new EntryWrittenEventHandler(OnSecurityEventLogWritten);  _eventlog.EnableRisingEvents = True; // I get an exception at this line with a Windows 7 standard user


I am getting the exception saying 'Requested Registry is not allowed'. when i execute the line 
_eventlog.EnableRisingEvents = True; 
I tried adding the user to the windows local 'Event Log Readers' Group but that did not help.

Note: I run this application with local administrator rights it works fine.

My requirement is to get the notification when Windows Security events and written for a standard login user.

Please guide for the same.

When I browse to http://server/sites/collectionname and click on the "site pages" library it says no files.
However I can type in the URL of a page in this folder and get to it fine

Am I missing something?

Updated Spatial Features in the SQL Azure Q4 2011 Service Release

This service release enables the following spatial features:

Spatial aggregates (CollectionAggregate(), ConvexHullAggregate(), UnionAggregate()), and geometry::EnvelopeAggregate() now work correctly. Geography::EnvelopeAggregate does not work because it returns a circular subtype which is not yet supported in SQL Azure (see the post for more details). Additionally, the system view, sys.spatial_reference_systems, previously missing from SQL Azure, is now available.

Using below report as a base... I've improved this report to show ALL possible Enforcement States, and changed the order of the Enforcement States, reading from “good” to “bad”, left to right.

AdventureWorks Exercises

I don't like much of the answers that I found in previous threads which mainly was due to the links that we're provided. Perhaps there aren't much professional websites that offer professional exercises unless you need to pay for it. If possible, perhaps someone can help me with some good exercises that work with the AdventureWorks database.

Also, sometimes I feel people are just rapidly placing an answer as a reply to a question when that answer may not really be what you want it to be and rather are seeking to be in a higher ranking in these forums when there are some people that aren't bothered by rankings, but rather a good answer.

Pieter,

a lot of the examples in Books Online use AW as their base, and although they don't offer exercises as such, by working through them and understanding them, you will pick up a lot of SQL.

I would tend to agree that you probably need a structured course or book to take you through all the areas with enough depth, ones that can explain rather than just give an answer (as you have found). The best way I find to learn things is to try and apply the ideas to a 'real world' problem - I find the constructed examples a little too sanitised sometimes.

Beware of uninstalling webcomponents update CU3 and CU2

Just a headsup for everybody, who wants to rollback to Lync RTM version, after both CU2 and CU3 have benn applied:

if you uninstall both CU3 and CU2 version without rebooting between the 2 removal precedure, you may end up with a broken applicationHost.config file, which will completely break WAS, which as a result will completely break IIS. End result: all webservices in Lync are as dead as possible.

Symptom:

IIS cannot start, because WAS (Windows Activation Service) could not start. WAS could not start, due to invalid applicationHost.config file (location: C:\windows\system32\inetsrv\config\ )

problem: some elements in the config file are screwed up by the uninstall application, for example:

however, in the broken environment, it looks like this:

Solution:

Try to get the configfile from backup (you have backup of this file, don't you? :) or get it from a proven to be perfect Lync environment. Remember: dont ever dare to unconditionally overwrite the file on the damaged server, as the config file contains implementation-specific values, and you will make an even bigger disaster. Instead, do a line-by-line comparison of the 2 config files, and fix only the obviously incorrect settings, leave every other lines in the damaged config file unchanged!

Windows 7 search - does not return file contents - continued

I think I found a solution to the "Windows 7 search not finding stuff" problem discussed in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ar/w7itproui/thread/ecbecc00-f3e7-429f-87cd-8900fc313add and elsewhere.

Essentially, the problem seems to be a bug in Windows 7 search: if a file is in a location that corresponds to any of the libraries (which include My Documents, of course), the search does not work correctly.

What I did:

1. Followed instructions in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/turning-off-libraries-in-windows-7/18d001dc-5319-440b-b29c-d348f81c929c to remove the libraries (entirely). I'm still waiting to see if it causes any side effects (such as My Documents location not being found by some stupid software), but so far so good.

2. Removed all disk locations from the list of locations being indexed (I actually left the start menu because I thought it might be useful).

3. Changed folder options to search through contents in non-indexed locations.

4. Disabled Indexing entirely; i.e., stopped the service and marked it "manual". It was probably unnecessary, but since I'm not going to rely on it at all, I figured might as well.

No problem so far. Let me know if you have any missed files with this setup.

Didn't work for me - but then again I've messed with a lot of settings in order to try and fix the problem, so maybe I left some switch in an incorrect state somewhere on the way. Will go with grepWin until MS shapes up and takes care of this enormously embarrasing mess.

How bad are things in this division of the company when a feature this important hasn't been fixed - and almost gone unacknowledged - for such a long time? I think you've lost a lot of cred over this issue.

CDC Changes

I enabled a CDC on 4 tables and there system tables created with CDC schema which track the changes to tables.

If i change the Structure of Main tables add new columns tot able will CDC tables be automatically updated ?

If i try to manually add columns to cdc tables changes are not being captured to the new columns

If you make any changes to your main tables, CDC will not capture those changes.

Steps would be:

1- Transfer your data from CDC to an physical table

2- Disable CDC on main table

3- Add desired fields

4- Enable back CDC on that table

Non Client issues VPN Users

We have more then 300 vpn clients is showing non client in the console, we have created a boundarie and fast network for VPN IP's.

While i tried to connect the machine via client centre using hostname it shows some error like duplicate name, but tried the IP its working.

But the IP address resolve the different hostname.

Any idea how to start troubleshooting this?

When doing a remote connection via VPN you must use the VPN IP address. Most right click and remote services will pull the private address of the client, not the current VPN ip. It will also use the IP address found in HW inventory which will be wrong.

For VPN users I look at the VPN server and find the ipaddress and use that ip to connect to them.

Once it installed how it communicate with the client by hostname or IP address.

And for Non Client machine im suspecting the below reason,

When i did the nslookup for the computer name it shows the VPN IP, when i did the nslookup for that IP address its resolve some other computer name...

FIM Service and Portal Install issue

Having issue where all is good prior to install of FIM service and Portal. My sharepoint Central admin site works as expected.

After I install FIM, I am no longer able to access the Sharepoint Central Admin site. All I get is the FIM site.

Is it supposed to be this way? I can't imagine so as the are many options that need to be controlled in the Central Admin.

What am I doing wrong?

During install I have tried purposely using the server name to no avail and then tried using localhost.

Everytime it scrubs access to Central Admin after install.

If you need more info let me know. Not sure what to include.

Ok, I think I see the problem. The FIM Service uses ports 5725 and 5726, so SharePoint Admin needs to be configured for a different port.

Are you sure you were accessing the central admin bit? This typically runs under another port than 80. You'd have a short cut to it in your administrative tools I think.

Or fire up the IIS mgmt console and see for your self: do you have two websites? What ports are they listening on?

I normally do a default setup, and the SharePoint Central Admin site is set up on a random, high port number. When you launch the Central Admin link, is it showing a port number in the URL? Perhaps that's the issue.

Try going into IIS manager, find the Central admin site and select "browse' from the right-hand actions menu and it should open the admin site.

Accessing from IIS Manager just as you describe. Same issue.

I am using ports 80(Sharepoint-80 in IIS)

And 5725 (Sharepoint Central Admin in IIS.)

I just removed FIM, and still not able to get to Central Admin

Oddly enough, Logged out of my Domain Admin account and logged in as server admin and I can get to the central Admin site on 5725 both from IIS and Central Admin App.

I am following exactly as detailed in technet instructions as follows:

1. "On the Configure Common Services – Configure the Forefront Identity Manager synchronization connection, in the Synchronization Server box, type the name of the server that is hosting the FIM Synchronization Service component."

For FIM Sync entry I am entering the server name as it suggests.

2. "Configure connection to the FIM Service, type the name of the server or the alias "

I have tried both server name and my alias with same result

3. "In Enter the URL to the SharePoint, type the address to the SharePoint site where the FIM Portal should be installed. This is the full address, including the port number, if necessary, to access the site collection. This address is http://localhost or https://localhost, if you completed the previous steps."

I have tried <server name>:5725; <server name> only; <http://localhost>; etc..

Should I be installing as local admin on the box instead of under a domain account? Would that make a difference? Not sure how.

Is there a naming format that I should stick to for the entries? It seems they give you the choice of either or. It get confusing as to what is SUPPOSED to be there.

Oh, I cannot install as local admin because I am using a seperate SQL 2008 server and I have to add an id and log in as that id for the sql sysadmin.

PS: Running on 2008R2

I have reinstalled my server about 7 times trying to fix this because eventually I break the website and cannot fix.

Also, each time I install Sharepoint services it sets up a different port instead of 5725. All documentation I read states it should be 5725.

So I am having to go into IIS and change the port to 5725.

This is what I get after FIM install on 5725(Where I should be seeing Central Admin)

Frank is correct FIM Services run on 5725 & 5726, switching Central admin to a different port in IIS should fix the issue.

That worked when I launch it from IIS but when I use the Central Admin app it still hung onto 5725 so I had to go to Operations\Alternate Access Mappings in Central Admin and change there as well.

All seems A-OK now. :)

Sure wish technet would document that in the instructions. Would have saved a lot of time and effort.

Not being an IIS person I would never have thought of that.

You note above in Technet - step 1 That's the directions for configuring the FIM Service management agent.

The first few times I installed FIM, I was lost on how to enter data during setup. I knew what was being asked for, but the exact format (with http / with port numer) got me. More explanation on the setup screens might help.

The only solution I can think of would have a novice user go through the setup/documentation and look for areas they are unsure of. When you work with the product all the time, some things you think are obvious - well - they just aren't.

Customizing Content Query Web Part (SP-2007)

Hi , i tried following to customize the CQWP as

connect the CQWP and configure according with my new "Template".

Add Column as

every thing is file but when i want to show this in another page again i have to do this again (Export and Import add "CommonViewFields".

My Question is that is there any other method so that i don't have to add the "CommonViewFields" only have to change the XSL Template ....

Well, you can use the SPLimitedWebPartManager to open up instances of a web part.

You can then instantiate your web part using the ContentByQueryWebPart class.

I have the same problem as yours. I am creating a webpart in visual studio and modifying the CommonViewFields property and adding the webpart in GAC so that i can use in the whole Sharepoint Site. Hi,

I am a Web Developer trying to use Microsoft’s SQL Server Reporting Services for the first time.

I have raw data in an MS SQL Database and intend to create a really comprehensive report consisting of multiple pages / sub-reports; sub-reports which could invariably be exported / published individually as pdfs and in various other ways, such as html, if required. Some research led me to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Report Builder 3.0, which I have downloaded and started reviewing.

I intend to create a set template and import data from my database for each sub-report, which will have its own unique identifier.

Is Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Report Builder 3.0 able to achieve this? Does it support batch procesing or is it designed for small reports?

I have also come across a lot of references to Microsoft's Business Intelligence Development Studio for creating comprehensive reports. Is this a better application to use for what I wish to achieve?

Hi, You are better off using BIDS because this the developer tool, Report builder is really for power users who want to create their own reports. We use rpeort builder but for complex reports BIDS is the better tool.

Empty space problem when exporting to word

I am using Report Builder 3.0 and I have a problem with my report when exporting to Word. My report is a table with 2 columns and for a few rows the 2 columns are merged into one and filled with the information from a sub-report. When exporting to pdf everything is lined up correctly , but when exporting to Word right before the information from the first report should be, there is a big gap of empty space.

I have checked for for accidental tabs or footers, but there aren't any in the sub-report. Also the KeepTogether property is set to False to every subreport so it can be split if needed.

I would appreciate any help!

Make sure the page size of the report canvas has no spaces, in the report designer the area around the table should be pushed to the table also make sure the location of the table should be top = 0cm and left = 0cm.

DAG issues

I have 3 exchange servers:

Server1 - CAS and HUB

Server2 - HUB

Server3 - CAS

Server1 and Server2 are set up as a DAG and Server3 is the witness server. When shutting down Server1 a couple of people are unable to connect to their email, while everyone else operates fine. The witness server used to be on a different server, but tried moving it to the CAS server out of frustration.

Please help?

Server 1 when down (which hold CAS role also) people are unable to connect to their mail , because CAS servers are not member of array plus your exchange infrastructure doesn't have any feature of network load balancing...

I recommend to deploy CAS array with windows network balance (if you need to minimize cost , but you make sure to NOT deploy WNLB with DAG members) ..or use hardware load balance (higher cost , but you can deploy it with CAS server that also members of DAG)...that leads to if any CAS server down , Users will always connecting and will not be prompted for user name and password

What would happen then if Server 2 and 3 went down. Would users automatically connect to Server1?

CAS array includes many CAS servers which provides single contact point for all client connections....

Hi,

When you create the CAS array all CAS servers in the site will be added to the array.

You will then probably want to have some form of load balancing between the CAS servers - and here you can't use NLB because one of the servers is part of the DAG.

Only single server can also be a part of CAS Array. A CAS Array is nothing but an object in active directory and the server is a peer to it. In fact it is a very good idea to create a CAS array even if you are running a single server. However, it is also true that you cannot have NLB and DAG running together which disallows creatig CAS Array and DAG on the same box.

Other key here is the when you shutdown server1 which is also a CAS server users connecting through this server will not be able to access their mailboxes until RpcClientAccessServer attribute is updated on the information stores that are hosting their mailboxes.

Your setup is like this if I understand.

Server1 - CAS and HUB and MBX (DAG node 1)

Server2 - HUB and MBX (DAG node 2)

Server3 - CAS

You might want to do something like this

Server1 - MBX (DAG node 1)

Server2 - MBX (DAG node 2)

CAS Array (NLB or HLB) = (Server3 - CAS + HUB) & (Server4 - CAS + HUB)

File server witness can either be Server 3 or Server 4.

Point your outlook clients to the CAS Array.

Remember you cannot load balance CAS servers which hold the mailbox role and are a part of a DAG, since DAG uses some functionality of Windows clustering.

Not correct.

You can use a hardware or a software load balancer to loadbalance CAS servers which are also part of a DAG.

It is correct thay you can't use NLB to loadbalance CAS servers in a DAG but your statement is a bit broad.

Hi,

I am new on Sccm. I am installing sccm in lab environment for testing. i have installed & configured all basic settings as below

1) AD site boundary

2) Client push Installation is enabled.

3) Client push installation account is a member of domain admin & member of local administrator on client system.

Problem :- When i push client installation on remote machine, its not getting installed & also not showing any errors in ccmsetup.log file at c:\windows\ccmsetup. If i check ccm.log on server at c:\program files\microsoft configuration manager\logs. i am getting two errors as below----------

1) CWmi::Connect(): ConnectServer(Namespace) failed. - 0x8004100e

Unable to connect to WMI (r) on remote machine "CLIENT MACHINE NAME". error = 0x8004100e

2) CWmi::GetObject(): GetObject() failed. - 0x80041010.

Unable to get SMS_Client from WMI on remote machine "SERVER MACHINE NAME". error = 0x80041010

I have searched a lot on forums & i tried below steps with no success.

1) DNS name resolvation - working fine

2) connecting to WMI service from computer management from server to client - OK.

3) connecting the admin$ - OK.

4) the user account that is set to client push install is in domain admin, schema admin, enterprise admin group.

5) cleaned client repositery at C:\windows\system32\wbem\

I am struggling into this issue from many days, really tired into this. Need your help to resolve this issue..........

You can ignore that error if you see a ccmsetup.log on the client.

There are no issues ... you mentioned that ccmsetup.log is generated on the client, so the push was successful. And there are no errors in ccmsetup.log according to your first posting. What's not working then?

please check the account which u r using for clientpush has enough rights on the target computer(local admin rights) to install sccm client ?

canyou try installing SCCM client manually and see how it works ? also checl client.msi.log as well for other info.

the issue is that the ccmsetup.exe continue showing in task manager on client system but the client is not getting installed.

Account used for client push install is a member of local admin group on client system.

I have checked with manually installing the client, there is exact same problem as above.

i did not found any log file named client.msi.log in client system, do i need to check it on server?

i examine the ccmsetup.log file again & found the massage as "MSXML 6.0 not available, failing over to lower version"

shall i check with installing MSXML 6.0 on client system?

Uptating the post :-

ccmsetup.log file is also showing below line as well, is there any issue with this?

"running as user "SYSTEM"

........after some lines.........

ccmsetup is being restarted due to an administrative action, Installation files will be reset & downloaded again."

its great pleasure to inform you that the installation is successful. the funny thing is that i don't know the exact reason :)

i just done the steps as below ----

1) created new folder as "ClientPatch"(path = C:\Program Files\microsoft configuration manager) in IIS-default web sites-CCM_Client.

but it was saying that reboot required even we restart the client system many times.

2) i just stopped service SMS_EXECUTIVE on server & it worked.......;)

may be its not a proper solution for it, so just for final confirmation i am going to install new client virtual machine & check on that system with the same settings....................

How to configure the breadcrumb navigation control. Or specify a custom navigation provider, i want to change the URL of "parentNode" and iam trying to find out if i can use JQuery to do that or is it other ways to achive this? the site i have is converted from sp 2007 to 2010 and the breadcrumb url path is pointing to the old rom, and i want it to point to the rom created in sp 2010....

hmm, well, I wont say its sacrilege, and im not a fan of typing the - but im

getting pretty good at it (and good at avoiding it)..

how about this, why don't you make a key hook that if you hit shift and

space it creates a dash, that way you don't need to reach up in to the

corner there :)
