Sharepoint 2010: Getting errors when trying to create a Site in the Solutions Gallery from a custom site template. Any Ideas.

We created a custom template with custom lists and save it to the Solutions Gallery.  After selecting it and naming the site, we get the following error?  Any ideas how to fix this?

ERROR:

You are going to need to look at the ULS log viewer.

http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/ULSViewer/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=3308

Install it on your server.  Then click file -> Open -> ULS, and you will see the log start scrolling by.  Leave it open, and then try selecting and naming your site again.

go to the ULS viewer, hit the pause || button, and scroll up untill you see what the error was. You should be able to search for the correlation ID.

Then repost what the error is.

I have the same error here.

I setup the ULS to log debug however no line contains either the error or the reported correlation ID.

------------------------------------
Reply:

When you open the ULS viewer, do a ctrl + u.  Leave the viewer on auto scroll so it just runs.  Then do whatever it is that is causing the error.  Once it gives the error, puase the ULS log.

The corrilation ID is always there, it may just be tough to "catch it".

Deadlock issue when updating in the configuration table

Hello All,

My application was migrated to a new server from then onwards am facing some issues like Deadlock  and this is happening only when at the end of the package am trying to upate my configuration table.I have few packages running in parallel

Is it something related to the new server where i should go and change some properties..Please suggest.

Regards,

Bharath

Reply:

Hi,

Beacause of parallel run it may happens try to use variables in package to assign locally.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Hi

The deadlock issue could be because of parallel processes running and trying to update the config table at the time when another process is holding a lock.

This can be avoided by using query hints like Row Lock which locks the row which is being altered and doesn't hold a table lock. Before doing it you must trace it with profiler with locks option on to see exactly where it is happening.

Be sure on one thing while using Row Lock query hint the table is properly indexed otherwise it won't be effective.

Regards

Harris

Hello,

This issue could be related to various factors, for example, when WebClient service is not running, or basic authentication is disabled on client computer, etc. To troubleshoot the problem, please try the steps below to see can the problem can be fixed.

1. Click "Start" icon, then "Run" input "Services.msc" click ok, and restart "WebClient" service.

2. Add your team site to the "Trusted sites" location of browser.

3. Clear the cache of IE on your client computer.

4. Uncheck the "Enable Protected Mode" of your browser.

5. Use 32-bit IE browser to open your team site, do not use 64-bit IE browser.

After that, try to upload file by clicking the option "upload multiple documents" again.

Windows 8 CP - Metro UI and desktop integration.

I have to agree with other people posting that the actual Metro Start Menu is completelly annoying and a totally non-sense.

After installing only 10 programs it has became full of stuff, as it seems that if in the older Start Menu things are well organized in folders, here anything is set as a tile. So if for a simple program in older Start menu I get a Folder ( as example ) with only 4 entries - The program shortcut, the uninstaller for it, an Readme file and a help file, here alll those 4 entries gets her own tile. for am more "complicated" program - suc Microsoft Office - I get at least 12 tiles on the same menu. The problem is that I don't need all this stuff here at once. Only base programs. The logical "tree" structure has been replaced with an illogical "nothing". Oh... I forgot, after installing few programs, the Desktop Tile has vanished from the Start menu... now I have to start an desktop program to enter it.

I'm afraid that somewhere, guys at Microsoft have forgot what means an user interface, and what it's his purpose - to help people to interact with installed software. That's all, nothing more. Easier UI, easier interaction.

I've used in about 30 years of working in IT almost all OS, and interfaces possible. Starting from command lines. As I've said in an other topic, the Windows 95 menu was a revolution. I've passed from Windows 3.1 to it in 5 minutes and never look back. for Desktops, the Metro UI gives me the feel of passing back to 3.1 UI. I can use it, but it slow me a lot.

I was always a Windows fan, but because my work i've used also other sistems, and usually when I've entered in contact with a new interface - Linux ( or 'nix derivates ), Mac OS, iOS or Android I was able in few minutes to understand how it works, without the need of a manual. My first contact with an Android Tablet was with one having a chinese language, and i don't know anything about chinese. But I was able in few minutes to change it's language to english. It's perfectly simple and well structured.

With Metro, I try to use it for about 2 weeks now, and I'm afraid i don't understand it's logic. Definitelly I need a manual for it. Wait... A manual for an user interface wich should be as simple to use as the gestures you do when you drink water ??

I finnaly got an touch screen this week-end for testing how Metro could help me using touch. It does'nt. And on a 23" monitor it looks bad, somewhat childish, even if on my Windwos Phone it's quite a pretty interface. Bigger screen worst look...

So desktop integration is a mistake, but it seems that even touch is not very usewfull. For Desktop use it cannot compete with Windows 7 or even the old XP as interface. Speed is something else. But now it seems it's not ready to compete even on tablets, with iOS or Android. Those looks better, familiar ( they still use the desktop !!! ) and are far more simple to use.

I don't want to be misunderstand. I agree Windows needs for a Touch interface in order to use it on tablets. But don't mess with the more powerfull desktop and start menu for desktop computers, and in what concerns tablets and touch screens give us something usable without a manual. Then I will be able to make the change. I don't need the old start menu if You gives me an viable alternative, wich will outperform the old one in terms of usability and productivity.  Until then I think you should reconsider put back the good old Start menu.

Reply:

Wait... I just found there's more... :(

Metro UI integration in the SERVER version ???? Come on guys... You want to run a server on a tablet ?

Who do you think will use a server with a totally unproductive interface ? People still use comand lines on server to do some task.

They are intended for professionals, not for kids. If you want to lose even the small percentage you have on the server market, do it.

But Linux will grow.

Comprehensive security for a solo practitioner start-up with website

Applies To:                Windows                                    | Windows 7                                    | Security, Privacy, and User Accounts

I asked a question yesterday and the answer was so good and so fast that I thought I would lay out my whole security problem and see if I can get some comprehensive help or at least useful piecemeal advice.  I am a solo pratitioner starting a business as a consultant to small banks.  I would like to offer my clients data security as part of their service.  I am not a privacy nut, but I care.  I also think I have an obligation to keep sensitve client information private.  I also think it is good marketing for a solo practitioner to demonstrate that he is up to corporate standards.  I am on a trict budget, but I have a little room for things I care about.  In evaluating my needs I have isolated the following factors:

Please keep in mind that I am a finance guy and not a techie.  By long experience I have learned that I come up to speed with new technology slowly.  Nevertheless I have taken a couple of weeks off and upgraded to new coputers, Windows 7, Office 2010, a smartphone, bilding a website that is not horrendously  ugly etc.

Website security: my current website provider is intuit (although that could change depending on your recommendation - they are not cheap);  In other businesses Intuit handles lots of sensitive data, so I assume their website security is adequate.  This is low priority for me because  nothing is on my website except email that is not fit for public consumption.  If it is hacked, we should be able to replace the whole website from back-up in a reasonable amount of time.

Secure email:  This is tough and I have had no real success with it. If I am going to offer it to clients it must be unusually easy to send and receive.  I am not a techie and neither are my clients; a complex solution that only works part of the time is worse than none. PGP has secure email, but they open with the fact that 12 out of 12 Carnegie Mellon undergraduates who took a tutorial and then tied to use it - all of them failed.  Google has it, but it is restricted to companies of 100 or more.  There is GNU Privacy Guard, Mozilla Thunderbird with Enigmail (free is good). zix corp is interesting but way too expensive.  FiLink sells Zixcorp technology, but is much cheaper for small users; the minimum size is five licenses at 599.  I wrote the sales manager a sob note and he reduced the price to 399 first year, $249 for renewal.  There is an English company called Egress for 72 pounds per year and McAfee has a product for corporate users that is affordable if they sell it one license at a time. So far I have had no luck find a comprehensive review of secure/encrypted email providers that would help me evaluate what they offer versus what they cost.

My highest priority here is a good experience for my customer; I can't afford for them to resent secure email. My second priority is reasonable cost.  And I MUST be able to put the email address on my website and have email security 1000% removed from website security.  Note, most of the secure/encryped email products I have seen start with an outgoing email; it would be a small improvement if the first email was secure when a customer or prospect cliced secure@MyCompany.  To tell the truth, I am not that senstive about the quality of the enryption.  The super bad guys will always find a way.  If I can keep out the idly curious and the everyday malfeasors I will be content.

Secure computers and smartphone are next.  I have found two parts: internet connections and hard drives.  For internet connections and smart phones there seem to be lots of good choices.  PC Mag like Norton and Mcafee; the European test centers favor Bitdefender and Kapersky.  On balance all of them seem good.  My new internet provider is comcast and norton comes for free with that so for $29 I can add their smartphone security and that seems the cheapest option.

For back-up I intend to link the laptop to the desktop and backup from one to th other in realtime for onsite backup.  I also want to backup in realtime to the cloud.  PC Mag recommends SOS and they are affordable.  But everyone is in this business.  Any recommendations?

Yesterday I wrote at legnth about my problems getting bitlocker to work with my two brand new toshiba computers.  One is an all in one desktop  DX735 $900 and the other is a portege  R835-p83 $800.  Neither of them have a TPM module.  Models that do have TPM seem to cost around $300 more.  $300 X 2 plus windows 7 ultimate $140 X2 = $880 for an encrypted hard drive.  That hurts.  Norton whole disk encryption has good revews at $150 and I am already using other norton products (I love having only one place to go when stuff goes wrong)  The problem is that it is $150 every year for tech support.  I am already paying up for Microsoft premium tech support and paying even more to support one little piece of software grinds a little.  Truecrypt is free, but everything I read about it says you have to be a techie to use it.  With a liitle more work I have discovered that hard disk encryption is a great big subject all by itself.  There are over 20 companies producing software, some of them for free.  I want something comprehensive ad easy to use.  I might not be right, but I think that means complete disk encrption which narrows things down a little.  Any complex procedure for managing the enrypted and unencrypted portion of your drive is an automatic loser.  At some point I always get clumsy, sloppy, distracted or tired.

Which brings me around to bitdefender spere.  For $100 per year I can have strong intrnet security for every computer in the house, strong security for every smartphone in the house AND HARD DRIVE ENCRYPTION.  I have been searching for over an hour to find out if bitdefender enccryption is 1) any good 2) user frendly 3) will encrypt a whole drive easily 4) is compatible with someone like me who has below average tech skills.  Bitdefender would have the advantage of being a single source for most of my security needs with tech support included in the subscription price.

Does anyone have real experience with Bitdefender? Is it a responsible choice for a newbie?  Does the encryption require TPM?  Are there other disk encryption options I should be considering?  I have read that Bitdefender does not play well with other security software including simple stuff like malwarebytes.  Does anyoe know if that is a serious problem?  If bitdefender fails will it prohibit other security software that might fix the problem?

Upon further research McAfee also has disk encryption in its suite and has the advantage of a possible secure/encrypted email.  PC Magazine recommends the suite but even they concede the virus protection is second rate and the cure function is also nothing to brag about.  (I dream of a suite that is really good at at least one of these things.

If I have website, email, smartphone, backup, and computer security (internet and disk) am I done?  Is there anything else?  I have looked at hardware firewalls: some are as cheap as $300, but I don't know what they will add or how much I will suffer to start them up and maintain them.  There also are additional software firewalls, but I do not know their pros and cons and am very concerned about how they will work alongside norton or bitdefender.

As you can see, I have put some time and effort into this; actually a lot more than I would like.  I am a businssman not a techie and I want to put something together that a businessman can maintain in a very reasonable amount of time.  I don't mind putting some time and effort into the process up front and even a few dollars, but then it needs to work.

You guys have been great so far, thanks for all your help.

Hi,

You are concerned about the disk encryption and backup real time.   Actually, Windows has built-in BitLocker Drive Encryption feature.

You have paid more attention to the security software, I think a thorough and roundly security policy is important for a company.  For example, firewall policies, router policies, switcher polices, client access policies and wireless network policies as well as USB external devices security policies.

Besides, you need one email firewall.  I think it is built with automatically backup feature in lots of email system.

You want to backup laptops and desktops real time to cloud.  I suggest you run Windows Hyper-V to achieve it.  Windows Hyper-V can help you to manage the network and clients.  Virtualized technology can help you run lots of clients without physical machines.  All the data is stored in the servers, you just need to protect the servers from attacking.

I just have thought of these, hope that helps.
If you have further questions, please let us know.

Hi,

The answer to your question is a well planned constructive application right from the item level to the server level.

Performance of Sharepoint 2010 or any application depends on how is your taxonomy.

What is the level of customization.

How effectively can the OOB cache be used in your application.

If you have already built your application and its performance is slow you might have to look at the Caching strategy.

If you are building your application now, plan your taxonomy. Try to use Content types, Site columns, Metadata service, Views at the initial level. My answer can be specific too your question.

Thanks !!

Integrating Ajax with SharePoint 2010 issues

I need to add the AjaxControlsToolkit reference to the default.master, so first I added the dll to the GAC. Next I've added this to the SafeControl assembly

<SafeControl Assembly="AjaxControlToolkit, Version=3.5.40412.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=28f01b0e84b6d53e,

processorArchitecture=MSIL" Namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" TypeName="*" Safe="True" AllowRemoteDesigner="True" />

Then in my default.master I've added the register assembly directive and the script manager tag (inside form tag.

<%@ Register Assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" Namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" TagPrefix="ajaxToolkit" %>

<ajaxToolkit:ToolkitScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server"/>

When I run it, I get an "An unexpected error has occured." If I remove the line of code from safe controls, I ger "The control type 'AjaxControlToolkit.ToolkitScriptManager' is not allowed on this page. The type is not registered as safe. "

As I'm typing this, I just noticed that there already is a

<asp:ScriptManager id="ScriptManager" runat="server" EnablePageMethods="false" EnablePartialRendering="true"

EnableScriptGlobalization="false" EnableScriptLocalization="true" />

So conflict perhaps? I need the Ajax toolkit for some custom webparts I'm bringing in from MOSS 2007 and in my research I've not seen any langauage wheather Ajax in integrated in SP2010 so I'm just doing what I've done many times in MOSS 2007.

What is one to do?

Thanks,

EJM

Hi,

Yes ,there can be only one Script Manager on a page. But when you say that you get "An unexpected error has occurred." , so for this try to edit the web.config file and in the CustomErrors tag set the mode="Off"  and run the page again.

Internal connection fatal error calling out to Microsoft Master Data Services

Hi All,

We have 2 environments where I see this error in the event logs and for the life of me can't figure out what is going wrong.

The QA environment is 3 tier and the UAT environment is clustered.

We make call outs to Master Data Services via the MDS WCF API. This error doesn't happen all the time, and we can reprocess data after the fact and the data processes fine.

Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Nic is Disconnected

Hi All,

I have an server having two Network card. One for Public and second for Netbackup. I have recieved a task of netbackup job failure. I logged into the Netbackup server console and found it was an issue of connectivity. I logged into the client server and found Netbackup nic is disconnnected there. I disabled/enabled the NIC and then server started showing Connected netbackup Nic. Issue also being resolved but i am not sure, what happened with NIC. Can any body tell me what was the issue.

Is anybody knows how to check the logs of Network card ?

Thanks in advance.

Manoj kumar SIngh

Reply:

You could check the system event logs for any relevant data. If you want to do some troubleshooting regarding this NIC I would recommend have read this article:

Troubleshooting

To troubleshoot network adapter problems, follow these steps:
  1. Use the Ping or PathPing command-line tools to test basic connectivity. Use Ping to isolate network hardware problems and incompatible configurations. Use PathPing to detect packet loss over multiple-hop trips.

To watch Ping statistics, use the ping -t command. To see statistics and continue, press CTRL+BREAK. To stop, press CTRL+C. If you detect lost packets in the statistics output, it indicates networking problems up to Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) layer 3 (IP-level connectivity).

If the remote system that you ping is across a high-delay link, such as a satellite link, responses may take longer. Use the -w (wait) switch to specify a longer time-out.

  2. Check the event logs for network-card-related entries or connectivity-related entries.

For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
308427  How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
  3. Check whether the network adapter is on the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). To see the HCL, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  4. Check other computers that use the same default gateway that are plugged into the same hub or switch. If these computers do not experience network connectivity problems, the problem may be a faulty network adapter on one computer.

If this is the case, update the network adapter driver to the latest version.
  5. Contact the vendor of each motherboard and update the BIOS of the boards. Some network adapters and motherboards or BIOS versions are incompatible. Obtain the latest version from the vendor's Web site or contact your hardware vendor.
  6. Check the network adapter and uplink hardware (hub or switch) for common settings. Make sure that all complementing network resources (network adapter, hub, and switch) are set to the same speed and duplex level. If the media type is set to autosense, autosensing, or autodetect, or "Auto Select," make sure that all components are autosensing correctly.

On some switches, a duplex setting of Auto may cause it to use half-duplex. You may have to force it to use full-duplex.

Reset the switch, restart the client, and test the connectivity.

Put the client and the server on a passive hub. If communication resumes, the problem may be caused by an incorrect network switch configuration.

For more information about how to configure the devices, contact your hardware vendor.
  7. Manually set the network adapter of the computer that has connectivity problems to half-duplex and a lower speed.

Connect the system to a switch that is configured to half-duplex and 10-Mbps, or use a 10-Mbps hub, to see whether connection can be established at a lower transmission speed.

To increase performance, increase the speed settings manually to 100 Mbps, and then restart the computers. Test for network connectivity loss, increase the setting to full-duplex, and then restart the computers. If network loss occurs, reduce the duplex setting and the speed to the previous settings.
  8. Swap the network cable between the failing system and the hub or switch.
  9. Replace the network adapter with a network adapter that has been tested and proven reliable. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Remove the network adapter diagnostics program.
    2. Remove the network adapter in Network properties.
    3. Install the new network adapter.
  10. Run Network Monitor at the same time on both ends of the network connection. After you filter the traces on the addresses of the two systems, compare both traces to see whether you can see the same traffic.

Use TCP Retransmit, the Network Monitor Experts tool, to detect TCP retransmissions. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Network Monitor.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Experts, and then click TCP Retransmit in the navigation pane.
    3. Click Add to Runlist.
    4. Click Run Experts.
If frames are missing in one of the traces, check all intermediate cabling, hubs, switches, and routers for hardware or configuration errors.

In Network Monitor, view the Capture Statistics summary frame. This frame is the last frame of the trace. If it contains a value other than 0 in the following statistic counters, the connectivity problem may be caused by a hardware or configuration problem:
STATS: MAC CRC Errors = 0
STATS: MAC Frames Dropped due to HardWare Errors = 0

Cluster Failover Failed to bring secondary node online

Hi,

i have 2 node cluster on MS SQL Server 2008 R2 on MS Windows 2008 R2. when i perform cluster test and move resource from node 1 to node 2 than it fails, following error wriiten in cluster event log.

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application completely online or offline.
One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

Cluster resource 'SQL IP Address 1 (Cluster-XXX)' in clustered service or application 'Cluster-XXX' failed.

Cluster resource 'IP Address XX.XX.XX.XX' in clustered service or application 'Cluster-XXXXX' failed.

Cluster disk resource 'Cluster Disk 3' indicates corruption for volume '\\?\Volume{f576887de3-5192-11e1-b66c-0016447f7a355}'. Chkdsk is being run to repair problems. The disk will be unavailable until Chkdsk completes. Chkdsk output will be logged to file 'C:\Windows\Cluster\Reports\ChkDsk_ResCluster Disk 3_Disk3Part1.log'.
Chkdsk may also write information to the Application Event Log.

than i revert back resource to Node 1 and working.  please guide why fail occur what configuration cause problema and how to fix it.

thx.

Why was Cluster Disk 3 corrupt? Any Disk errors in the Windows System event logs on Node 1 or 2?

Now that the disk is "repaired" is failover now successful?

Have to click account after ctrl-alt-del

Hi,

This is weird, it's happening since two weeks or so.

When I login to my computer, after a restart or after a lock, I have to click my name.

Before, I was getting the password field directly after the ctrl-alt-del.

What happened?

Thank you,

Hi,

This issue occurs can be caused by the value of default logon user name has been modified. Let us reset it to test the issue.

1. Click Start, type "regedit.exe" and press Enter.

2. Navigated to "HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon".

3. Find "DefaultUserNAme" and edit its value data as your User Account Name.

4. Reboot the system.

Hi,

It did not change anything. It seems to be doing that to everyone on the domain. It seems related to the GPO change that I did some weeks ago when we added a pre-login connection to the Wifi network: ("Authentification unique" part)

Is there a way that we keep that pre-login wifi connection but get the old direct-to-password login type?

So, in English, what I activated is "Single Sign On" with the option "Perform immediately before user logon".

Is there a way to do Single Sign On without having to click the account when we login?

An unexpected error has occured during a password set operation

HI,

Has anyone seen this error message before on an ILM server, which is failing to sync passwords between AD and Live@EDU:

An unexpected error has occured during a password set operation.

Hi,

I advise you to set the logging level to high (2) or verbose (3). This will give you more details about the password sync. Here are some instructions to set the logging level. The output will be the event log.

PCNS

For PCNS, four logging levels are controlled by adding the EventLogLevel (REG_DWORD) entry to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PCNSSVC\Parameters

  •          0 = Minimal logging
  •          1 = Normal logging (default)
  •          2 = High logging
  •          3 = Verbose logging

MIIS 2003

For MIIS 2003, four logging levels are controlled by adding the FeaturePwdSyncLogLevel (REG_DWORD) entry to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\miiserver\Logging

  •          0 = Minimal logging
  •          1 = Normal logging (default)
  •          2 = High logging
  •          3 = Verbose logging

Some basic questions..

  • Which management agent are you using to connect to live@edu? OLsync I presume.
  • Are you seeing this on all users or only selected users?
  • Are the other MA functions (Sync, provision) working correctly?

Pieter's notes about logging levels are important. They may provide additional data for troubleshooting

SQL Math

I understand the differences between all the different number types in SQL Server.  What I am wondering is, does anyone know a solid solution for someone who needs their math to be correct?  The results of simple math problems differ depending on which type you use.  I can safely say my TI-83 from over 10 years ago never gets the math wrong.

Here is a perfect example.  My company is trying to calculate number of layers of boxes when we know the total box count and how many can fit on one layer.  The logic comes in when you can put boxes of different dimensions on the same layer.  For example box A can fit 3 per layer and box B can fit 6.  Therefore box B is half the size of box A.  In order to calculate the total layers needed you divide the total boxes by the quantity per layer and sum them up.  Simple math in the example below (8/6) + (3/6) + (1/6).  Once I know the actual number of layers I want to take the ceiling because we can't have a partial layer.  Depending on the type of my numbers I could get different results.  See the script below.  In case 1 the ceiling is 2, in case 2 it is 3, in case 3 it is 2.  Can someone help by telling me a solid number type to use because right now my calculator is still better at math then a corporate level database.  Sad

SELECT SUM(TOTAL) FROM ( SELECT CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 8) / 6 AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 1) / 6 AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 3) / 6 AS TOTAL ) X SELECT SUM(TOTAL) FROM ( SELECT CONVERT(REAL, 8) / 6 AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT CONVERT(REAL, 1) / 6 AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT CONVERT(REAL, 3) / 6 AS TOTAL ) X SELECT SUM(TOTAL) FROM ( SELECT CONVERT(FLOAT, 8) / 6 AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT CONVERT(FLOAT, 1) / 6 AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT CONVERT(FLOAT, 3) / 6 AS TOTAL ) X

No, it is not easy. And I thank you for the example. A customer has made some noise about the fact that we use float in our financial application. Your first example shows that you are not safe with decimal either.

If I understand your problem correctly, you are effectively working with rational numbers, and there is no built-in type for this in SQL Server. You could implement one in the CLR, or just keep denominator and nominator in separate columns.

Another possibility is to implement an "intelligent" ceiling function. If you know that the nominator is 6, then you know that 2,00000004470348 is the number 2 with some noise that the end. (Of course, if you use approxamite numbers, you should use float, not real, since 32-bit float values are a bit too noisy.)

And while your pocket calculator computes this example correctly, you can bet it will go wrong once the numbers become hairy enough. Decimal and floating-point are after all, only approximation for rational numbers.

I'm not at work or by a SQL box to test this out, but just out of curiosity, how about changing the 6 to the same type as your numerator in each case?  It would be considered 'good form' for optimization purposes anyway, but it may impact your answer too.

Additionally, try nesting:  So (pseudocode), "Select Cast(    cast(8 as decimal) / cast(6 as decimal)   as decimal  )" and variations thereof.

Anyway, sorry for posting without the benefit of testing, but I'd definitely try those two variations, to see what might happen.

One thing about all the floating point types to keep in mind, is that they do not have infinite precision. There are only so many digits (before and after the decimal point) they can store. 123,456,789,123,456,789 will suffer the same truncation/inprecision as 0.123 456 789 123 456 789.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_point

You calculator might not suffer that, but that is because it has way more time and (relative) more storage. For all we know, it could calculate this out out as strings (the way humans do). Or just have a float type so big, that the display won't be able to show a number that is too big for it (limiting user input/output to not run into problems). Or just use huge Integers (see below).
The SQL server does not have this capability. It has to solve all your actions fast. It has to use every type to the last value in it's range. It has to use the existing RAM well. And it can't just limit the numbers is shows you.

When you only need a certain amount of precision, it might be better to not use a float type at all. When you only need 3 digits behind the decimal point, just multiply by thousand and store it as Integer. You only need to convert/reformat it into the expected format when you show it the user.
In fact that is how money and smallmoney actually work:
money: -922.337.203.685.477,5808 to 922.337.203.685.477,5807 (8 byte)
bigint: -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 (8 byte)
smallmoney: -214.748,3648 to 214.748,3647 (4 byte)
int: -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647 (4 byte)

Converting the 6 to Decimal doesn't do it, but the outer layer convert seems to do the job:

SELECT SUM(TOTAL) -- Outer convert over entire formula, including converting 6 to decimal FROM ( -- SELECT Convert( Decimal( 18, 10), (CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 8) / CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10),6) ) ) AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT Convert( Decimal( 18, 10), (CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 1) / CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10),6) ) ) AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT Convert( Decimal( 18, 10), (CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 3) / CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10),6) ) ) AS TOTAL ) X SELECT SUM(TOTAL) -- Outer convert over entire formula without converting 6 to decimal FROM ( -- SELECT Convert( Decimal( 18, 10), (CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 8) / 6 ) ) AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT Convert( Decimal( 18, 10), (CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 1) / 6 ) ) AS TOTAL UNION ALL SELECT Convert( Decimal( 18, 10), (CONVERT(DECIMAL(18, 10), 3) / 6 ) ) AS TOTAL ) X

I do understand precision and that it can effect the outcome if you don't have enough.  Float defaults to 53 precision which isn't a lot.  But if your trying to say that a SQL Server cannot perform proper math because it doesn't have "infinite" precision, I don't buy it.  A TI-83 calculator has a 6mhz processor and 512kb of flash RAM.  While it does only perform single line calculations at a time it is effective enough to consider all numbers the same (integer and decimal) and the math is always correct.  To say a database server with dual core at 2.9ghz and 8gb of ram can't match that is slightly embarrasing.  I understand that different data types store at different sizes but wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft would adopt a single data type for numerics that would work similar to varchar.  Similarly it would have a size of n + 2 bytes.  There would no more number type conversion necessary and the math would be to an "infinite" precision if MAX is specified.  On a corporate level I find imprecision a major issue because it can cost thousands of dollars.

------------------------------------
Reply:
There are other fixes to the issue but this thread was mainly started to point out a glaring issue that developers have to deal with in a corporate level database.  The math is inaccurate and requires weird conversions, which result in performance loss.  I was hoping someone could explain why there are so many data types for numbers?  I don't buy the smaller size data types were a winning trade off for poor math.

And from the "Cheater's shortcut" files, a way to make the statements shorter and cleaner looking.  However, like many sneaky shortcuts, being sneaky may someday bite you back.  However, it's still good/fun to know:

	SELECT Cast( 8 / 6 as Decimal(18, 10) ) AS Tot_A_Wrong -- Wrong answer,casted integer answer 1 , Cast( 1 * 8 / 6 as Decimal(18, 10) ) AS Tot_B_Wrong -- Wrong answer, casted integer answer 1 , Cast( 1.0 * 8 / 6 as Decimal(18, 10) ) AS Tot_C_Wrongish -- Probably not enough decimal places , Cast( 1.00 * 8 / 6 as Decimal(18, 10) ) AS Tot_D_Wrongish -- Probably not enough decimal places , Cast( 1.0000 * 8 / 6 as Decimal(18, 10) ) AS Tot_E_Wrongish -- Probably not enough decimal places , Cast( 1.000000 * 8 / 6 as Decimal(18, 10) ) AS Tot_F_Wrongish -- Probably not enough decimal places , Cast( 1.00000000 * 8 / 6 as Decimal(18, 10) ) AS Tot_G_Better -- Better: Enough decimal places , Cast( 1E0 * 8 / 6 as Decimal(18, 10) ) AS Tot_H_Better -- Better: Enough decimal places

Why do I say this may bite you back?  It's probably NOT one of those cases where a future SQL Server version will change how the statement operates, but it is a case where a future developer may decide to "correct" your code and remove the "unnecessary" multiplication, thereby eliminating your sneaky trick and introducing an error.

So, if you get tricky, document the statement clearly!  Or type it out the long way.

In this 512 kb it has to store at tops 4 values. That means your calcualtor has around 131,072 bytes per Number.

UNIQUEIDENTIFIER with his 16 bytes is an extremly big type. In fact it's so big, it's size starts to become a Performance issue (the processor has to compare it as two 8-byte integers). And honestly, 99.99% of all user of SQL Server do not need at type bigger than BIGINT.

For the 0.01% that is left:
Make the calculation in the client application. There is bound to be some pre-created Class libary with wich you can calcualte really big int/really precise floats in any higher language. If not, it's easy enough to make one.

If you need to store your numbers in the Database:
Varbinary. Store teh obejcts direclty
or
Varchar. Store them as XML.

A Database has the job to allow the save storage and manipulation of Data. That it is what it is desinged for, that is what it is good at.

It is not designed doing high precision mathematics. Or even complex mathematics. It's not even supposed to be able to do that. Doing what you try to do in SQL, is like trying to make a GUI in Assembler.

Reply:

Yes, there exist db engines which accept 126-bit mantissa. But not MS SQL. This is how it is, if you need more do it in C# or whatever else.

Or find a workaround. For example, the problem you mentioned, to calculate number of layers of boxes, may be under some conditions be reformulated using integer arithmetic only.

Again, if you want exact results when computing rational numbers, you need to use rational numbers. If you use decimal numbers, be that in base 10 or in base 2, you are using approxamite numbers, and whether you get the correct result on the bottom line is up to chance, no matter you use SQL Server or TI-83.

Then again, it appears that when do decimal division, SQL Server always
truncates, never rounds. That works to your advantage, so that ceiling
should work for you.

By the way, I tried this on my HP32S  1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3. The result had an
awful lot of nines. Not unexpected.

Shortcuts for en-dash and em-dash

Many people miss easy to use shortcuts for typing en-dash and em-dash, like other systems have them. Word has an auto-correction while typing a hyphen with spaces, but this 1. only works in Word and 2. doesn't work when inserting it between existing words. Many users symply use hyphens, but that's wrong in cases where an en-dash or em-dash should be used.

Word also has shortcuts for typing en-dash and em-dash with the minus on the numeric keypad, but 1. this is logically wrong because en-dash and em-dash are punctuation marks and not arithmetic operators, 2. not every keyboard has an numeric keypad, e.g. on laptops and 3. this still only works in Word.

Similar to other systems Windows should use Alt+hyphen for en-dash and Alt+Shift+hyphen for em-dash. Systemwide and with the normal hyphen and not the minus on numeric keypad.

Reply:

I totally agree! That's one of my biggest wishes for Windows since many years.

As somebody who has to write very much you need these different dashes because they have a meaning in a sentence. And the way Windows handles it today is very annoying. Other systems do it better and I think Windows should have this too.

In another forum I wrote about other shortcuts to use, but you're totally right: the combinations with Ctrl are used for non-breaking hyphens and soft-hyphens. And Alt already is the modifier key for special characters.

So Alt+hyphen for en-dash and Alt+Shift+hyphen for em-dash are perfect for this. On the Mac and other systems it is the same combination.
