Exchange server 2003 HDD Fails need to restore to a new created exchange 2010 mailbox server
Hi,
while starting migration to from Exchange 2003 to Exchange Server 2010 , I have created a mailbox server & HUB/CAS server ,have moved some mailboxes to the new one, but before moving the remaining mailboxes to the new Exchange 2010 DB , the exchange 2003 database server Hard disks failed . my question is how can I move users mailboxes that were on Exchange 2003 to the 2010 mailbox server without the existence of the Exchange 2003 . note that I may take the pst files from the outlook (as an Archive) then return them when moving the mailbox to the new server without the need to do a restore for the exchange 2003 data base .

- If you don't have the 2003 Databases then your best bet is to go machine to machine, export from the cache version to PST and then import
- If you have the Exchange databases check out Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp which will allow you to Open any Offline Database (And Repair first is damaged) so that you can then Browse, Search, Export Mailboxes, Folders and Individual Messages to PST, MSG & XML formats OR Recover direct from any offline Exchange database to any Production Exchange Server, even cross version i.e. Exchange 2003 --> Exchange 2010 etc. You can also search online stores for specific information and then Export, Delete or Purge the result set.

Hi Troy ,
I will use Option #1 , export then import pst file.
but the Exchange organization still knows that the mailboxes are on the failed server. so I want to force the mailbox move to the new Database. could it be done ? if yes , please advice how ?

This can't be done without restoring Exch. I would recover Exch with disasterrecovery switch and then move users across.
Or if you're going to use the PST option, you can try to remove Exch attribute from the account using Exch tasks, this will remove all Exch attributes. You will then have to create a new mbx on 2010 and import the PST.

Metro UI
Have show some of our business clients the Public Preview and they are all in agreement that they will not move to Win 8 with the Metro UI because they do not want to relearn windows and are of the same opinion as us that the Metro UI is not made for business environments.
Have not heard one positive comment from any of our clients.

Bluetooth works then just stops discovering devices and you can no longer pair on a Thinkpad W520 Windows 7 Ultimate X64
Hi,
I have a new Lenovo Thinkpad W520 with Broadcom Bluetooth. The Bluetooth works straight out of the box using Lenovo's OKR image (Windows 7 x64 Pro that I upgrade to ultimate using one of my Technet keys). The problem is that as I customize the machine and load updates (only Microsoft and Thinkvantage System Updates) and my software after a day or so Bluetooth just stops working. I am using the same end-user software and apps on the Thinkpad as the Ideapad (Win7 x64 Ult w/Broadcom BT as well) that the Thinkpad is replacing. The symptoms are that Windows will no longer discover new bluetooth devices (allow new devices to connect is selected as well as alert me when a new device want to connect). I am able to make the computer discoverable and can see it on my phone but cannot pair to it. It eventually timesout and gives an invalid passkey or no passkey error though I am never prompted to enter a passkey nor is one displayed on the laptop. The problem is very similar to KB980396 and KB2319435 though neither of these KB's will update my system (both say not applicable when I attempted to install them). This problem has me confounded as consistently I can reload the OKR image, apply all Microsoft Updates (to that point in time), Thinkvantage updates (to that point in time), it works, start loading some of my software (there are some further non bluetooth related sytem updates that happen based upon the software I load but none of it is bluetooth related software and I don't think any more lenovo updates either by this point), and it eventually just stops working with the symptoms I have described. Thing is I am not loading any bluetooth related software or anything that I can think of that is affecting BT or the BT stack yet it eventually just stops working. This has me quite confounded and I believe it is either an OS issue or an issue with Broadcoms (Lenovo's) BT drivers. Does anyone have any ideas? This is a consistent problem and I don't think it is what I am loading on the machine, meaning I have not been able to say I install X software then it stops working. Can anyone help? Thanks
(Futher Lenovo is sending a new BDC but I don't fully think that will make a difference. I have also removed and reseated the BDC currently installed in the machine. I do currently believe it is a software issue and not the hardware. Twice I have been able to reimage back to the out of the box OKR image and BT starts working again). My choices at this point seem to be 1) to wait for the new BDC to arrive and test it in the system as the system currently is, 2) further troubleshoot the current non-working system, or 3) reimage to the OKR image (starting the process over again) --or possibly to the image I created (Bluetooth was still working at that point, also the machine at this point was basically MS Updates and the Thinkvantage system updates --I would bet BT in this image would work but would need to test it, as I mentioned it seems to always work using the base OKR image the 2-3 times I have reimaged the machine trying to resolve this issue and the image I made was with thinking that an update or something I was installing was killing BT in the machine). Does anyone have any ideas of more indepth troubleshooting that I can do or perhaps a better approach I might take towards resolving this? I don't rule out that it is the bluetooth card but then again it just seems more like a software issue..
Sorry to be so long winded, this is just a frustrating issue given that it always seems to work when I use just the base OKR image and the only changes being made after this point being software changes and bluetooth just stops working as I described.
(Also just to mention in my post BT is turned on, there are no issues in device manager and everything appears that it should be working. I have tried downgrading to the same version of the drivers as what comes with the OKR image and no luck, and uninstalling, reinstalling the current bluetooth drivers for the W520 from Lenovo with same lack of positive results).
Thanks
----
Took option 3 except that I used the Rescue and Recovery (it's not not OKR as I mentioned) Image that I created as a baseline (basically the system recovery image, then all windows updates applied and thinkvantage systemupdate updates applied and backed up) and bluetooth works again. The problem again will now be that after installing various applications (some are msapps, e.g. office, visio, psdk and vs related stuff), utilities (some network related, none are BT related) and also Nvidia's Quadro drivers for the 3d over Displayport support, and not installing any that is bluetooth software or involves bluetooth drivers... bluetooth will just stop working (so far as what I install on the machine this is the same software and setup I have on another slightly older Lenovo laptop that works fine, windows 7 x64 ultimate as well, broadcom bluetooth like the current machine and no problems). I should probably also take this to the Lenovo forums (and even do have an issue open with Lenovo but it is being approached as a hardware problem so far), the issue is very similar to the KB's I mentioned and still thinking it is software or something OS related, I was hoping to get some ideas on what to try next, sorry again for the long read. Thanks

Assign a package to a Branch distribution point
I have one central and 3 primary sites and 10-12 BDP under each primary sites.
I found below script which will assign package to BDP.
I want to assign package to BDP from central site. (The way we do in console) using below script which i found in MSDN it works for Primary site only. When i try to add package from central site it do not find any BDP record.
Can you please let me know how can i assign package from Central site and not through Primary site?
Sub SWDAssignPackageToDistributionPoint(connection, existingPackageID, siteCode, serverName)
' Create distribution point object (this is not an actual distribution point).
Set distributionPoint = connection.Get("SMS_DistributionPoint").SpawnInstance_
' Associate the existing package with the new distribution point object.
distributionPoint.PackageID = existingPackageID
' This query selects a single distribution point based on the provided SiteCode and ServerName.
query = "SELECT * FROM SMS_SystemResourceList WHERE RoleName='SMS Distribution Point' AND SiteCode='" & siteCode & "' AND ServerName='" & serverName & "'"
Set listOfResources = connection.ExecQuery(query, , wbemFlagForwardOnly Or wbemFlagReturnImmediately)
' The query returns a collection that needs to be enumerated (although we should only get one instance back).
For Each resource In ListOfResources
distributionPoint.ServerNALPath = Resource.NALPath
distributionPoint.SiteCode = Resource.SiteCode
Next
' Save the distribution point instance for the package.
distributionPoint.Put_
' Display notification text.
Wscript.Echo "Assigned package: " & distributionPoint.PackageID
End Sub

you are saying you are able to add package to BDP from primary site but not from Central site ? am i right
do you have standard distribution point defined in central site.

Powertip: Accessing SkyDrive using (pristine!) Win7 Explorer
One of the things I came to admire and respect when it comes to Office 2010 is the seemingly transparent SkyDrive integration; with a click of a button (backstage -> Save/Send -> Save to Web) I can save my Office document directly onto SkyDrive. Awesome!
However; this got me thinking. During the saving I can see SkyDrive folders (and files), I can create new folders to put my document in, so.. Why can't I do this when opening files ? ("open from web" for example).
It can be done, in multiple ways. And whoever said Microsoft never honors Internet standards should get their mouth washed with soap because well; they do.
So what am I talking about ? Well, this:
Obviously your first reaction could be: "Fake" or "Tricked". I know I'd be sceptical when I saw this screenshot because well... Its something many people ask about, no one answers, and some companies even try to make money out of this issue (not Microsoft, how surprising indeed...) with their own software (and even that is limited). The mentioned folder is somewhat of a hobby project of mine; reviews written in Word and shared through SkyDrive. You can access the official SkyDrive link here and I hope that puts an end to all sceptics. Sorry; all reviews are written in Dutch (my native language), hardly finished at the time of writing and to make matters worse; they're intended to be posted onto the fora of the "game console competion" (lets not get into that ;-)).
So what is happening here, better yet: how can you get this to work ?
The keywords for me were: Windows Live & Office 2010.
Ok, how to get this show on the road:
- Go to your Windows Live (or Hotmail) account and create an Office document using the Office web applications (for the sake of clarity I'm going to focus on Word).
- Save the document onto your SkyDrive.
- Now tell the web application to open the document you're working on with Word (obviously you need to have Word installed).
- Close the document (yes, you don't even need to save this).
- Go to the recent documents section in the backstage view.
NOW... In the backstage view you'll most likely see your document and below it an URL which looks something like this: https://d.docs.live.net/stuff/. Where 'stuff' is actually a large hexadecimal number. Guess what? That number is your unique identifier on SkyDrive (so be carefull with it!).
One of the things which makes Windows 7 a very powerful OS is its native support for web standards. You know; ftp, http and... webdav.
If you used MS Office 2010 to get hold of your own unique "SkyDrive link" (=the link mentioned above where "stuff" is your own number) you should try and use that link with Explorer. What's that? It simply opens a webbrowser which then gives you the directory you were after ?
Well; that is a hint that it works! No, I am not kidding you. Start Word (2010), click File -> Open (or hit control-o), now paste that same link into the Word dialog (at the bottom) and see what happens...
Yes; now you get to see your directories on SkyDrive!
You will see something like this:
Obviously I blurred out my own ID but I do hope this gives you guys a hint.
Now go radical: click the first section (d.doc..). THEN click the empty space after it. Now you will get to see the real URL. Which is: "\\d.docs.live.net@SSL\DavWWWRoot" (without the "" obviously).
What is this? This is the Webdav base folder towards SkyDrive. Better yet: you can access your own folder this way too! Remember that large hex number ("stuff") above? Just add it to the URL here as such: "\\d.docs.live.net@SSL\DavWWWRoot\stuff".
And that is your ticket into direct SkyDrive access on Windows 7.
For your optimal pleasure:
- Go to "my computer".
- Right click the mouse in the main area and chose "Add network location".
- Add the URL I mentioned above (with 'stuff').
- Give it a name ('SkyDrive' for example).
The result to that can be seen at the top of this post.
Who said you couldn't learn anything new on Windows eh ?
As said; this gives you direct access to your SkyDrive location right from the Explorer.
For the record; I did some tests but I don't think this is going to work on Windows XP. XP had a hard time grokking the "@SSL" part, yet when I left it out Windows did come up with a request to logon using a Live ID but never got beyond that point. So my conclusion at this time is that this is only usable with Windows 7.
AND there you have it!
I hope officials aren't going to accuse me of publishing "crown jewels" because honestly I don't think I am; especially given how the whole thing is in plain sight for any Office 2010 user.
With kind regards, Peter
- Edited by ShelLuser Sunday, March 11, 2012 2:33 AM Forgot to mention that the document needs to be saved on SkyDrive
Reply:
While all of the above works, you have to realize that I wrote it up in the heat of the moment. So what if you don't have Office 2010? Well, obviously you should consider getting it, but in the mean time here is a solution to get easy access to your own ID (which you can use behind the "base URL" in order to access the location directly in the Explorer):
- Go to your SkyDrive and select "Documents".
- Now create a new folder (directory).
- The folder will be checked immediately, now click on "share" (in the menu to the right).
- Select the "Get a link" option and then click one of the buttons.
- Now you'll see a link which starts with: https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx where 'xxx' is a so called hexadecimal number. This is your own unique identifier.
- Open up your file explorer and enter this on the addressbar: "\\d.docs.live.net@SSL\DavWWWRoot\xxx" where "xxx" is replaced with the number which you obtained above (I suggest using notepad to create the new URL).
An example... (note, we're on TechNet so obviously I do this with Internet Explorer (9)).
If you go to the (IMO excellent) Office website you'll see the header which asks you to explore the free online Web Apps. I concur; it's really worth the effort and those apps can be very handy to have around (if you have a Windows Live ID you have access to these).
Click on one of the templates, for example this PowerPoint template which shows you the solar system. Now, when opened look at the top of the page. You'll see a link resembling the name of the template you opened ("Solar system presentation") as well as a link called "SkyDrive". Right click the link "Solar system presentation" and select "copy shortcut". Open notepad and paste the link in.
Look at the whole URL and find a section called "cid=xxx" where xxx, you should know by now, is a large hexadecimal number. Copy this number and put it behind the "base URL" (\\d.docs.live.net.... the stuff I mentioned above). Now copy this new link to the clipboard, open your filebrowser, and paste it into the addressbar. The result should be obvious:
Now you can easily access, copy and open all these excellent Office templates, courtesy of the Microsoft Office team. But most of all; access SkyDrive as if it were a local drive with all the advantages that come with it.
With kind regards, Peter

I don't have an answer for the case of the self-moving files, but I do have something to add about your post.
RAID 0 is a disaster waiting to happen, so if you really mean that this server is configured this way, please convert it to RAID (something else). I suggest 1 or 10, but 5 or 6 would be equally viable. 0 means you have *doubled* your chances for loss.
BTW.... if the files in question were truly "copied" they should be in both locations, not just the source or the target. Cut and Paste (move) will result in them being in the target location but not the source.

After Upgrade the Domain Exchange 2010 Freeze
my case as following, two weeks ago i successfully migrated Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 everything worked well and i kept the old exchange 2003 server offline for two weeks, then i remove it form the environment.
Yesterday the client upgrade their domain controllers from 2003 to 2008, after that to test exchange connectivity they restart the exchange 2010 server and it took the Exchange server about 60 minute to reboot (Stuck on Applying computer settings), when its finally finish rebooting all major exchange services was not running, i traced the problem am got it solved buy rerun the exchange setup with the /prepareAD and /preparedomain switches, but the thing i didn't understand is why did thing happened so my question are:
- Do i need always to rerun the setup after upgrading the domain controllers?
- which is better to upgrade the domain first then migrate exchange or it does not matter where to begin?
i'll appreciate any feedback.

There shouldn't have been any need to do anything with prep after upgrading the domain controllers.
What exactly did they do though? Was it an in-place upgrade or a new server and the old ones being removed? Stuck at applying settings usually means the server is struggling to see the domain controllers - DNS wrong etc. An AD issue rather than an Exchange issue. However because of the heavy dependency Exchange has on the domain it means that any issues with the domain will have a significant effect on the operation of Exchange.

NIC Teaming causing DNS registration to fail.
I'm working with an IBM xSeries server. The server has dual broadcom NICS and is using the BACS utility from Broadcom to team the NICS in a SMART Load Balancing configuration.
Whenever I setup the team, the DNS registration goes away and never comes back. If I do an ipconfig /registerdns it will register a DNS entry for me on the DNS server (a different server) and in about an hour the DNS entry will remove itself and never re-register. Have you ever seen this before? There are 2 other identical servers in the environment with the same setup and they do not perform this behavior.

I have the same issue with BACS and a teamed dual broadcom NICs.
Once the server has booted however, if you go into network properties of the team, and apply the settings it will re-activate correct DNS on the teamed NIC.
If you reboot the server, you need to do this again. I have not been able to fix this.
I have been waiting for Broadcom to fix this bug in their driver for over a year now...

A view into Windows8
I ran the DP from mid-September 2011. Messed w/ it sporadically. Since 29/2/12 have been solidly w/ Windows8. To little time to learn it, personalise it. I'm running dual-boot w/ Windows7, both x64. The Start is of little concern... I boot to the Desktop... have customized start but visit it rately. The lack of old start menu & windows orb is meaningless. Navigating Win8 is smooth, easy, convenient & quick. Moussing, rather than Touch, goes just fine. There are some ok Features, particularly like Ribbon in Windows Explorer windows, what is in FILE & that access to Event viewer, cmd, cmd as Admin, is all over the place. Search is very cool, especially typing to open real estate on Start to search. I will say, emphatically, Keyboard shortcuts & Quick Launch make life w/ Windows8 much nicer than otherwise.
As for performance, it is stunning!! RAM usage is low. CPU usage is low. Speed & snappiness impressive. So far, I have hit not snags or glitches, except for once the screen saver got stuck. I have discovered any software or hardware issues. No 'installation' of any devices was needed, Windows8 took care of everything all by itself w/ immediacy @ the onset. It does do some neat & helpful things. I'll end this diatribe by using some unexpected adjectives... I have been using various Windows OSs for a long time. I'm actually in IT & have worked on many machines & done many installs. I beta-tested Vista & Windows7... they were not as refined, @ the beginning of the Betas as Windows8 Beta is. The APPs are another story...seem noticeably unfinished. The install time on Windows8 is the fastest I've ever seen @ about 10-15 mins. But, back to the adjectives... the point was, after other OSs to compare & in mind, Windows8 just has this calm, relaxed, quiet, happy feel about it. You are welcome to try to figure out what I mean... techno jargon doesn't express it.
Because of all of the above & more, I find Windows8 fun, enjoyable & technically impressive. How it will be received is hard to say. The design goal were ominous & probably have been achieved. The compatibility base is huge. The resource requirements are tiny, resource usage is low. The under-the-covers Features for enterprise are outstanding. It's the most secure & fastest booting OS, ever. I either see extreme balking or marked excitement. Getting End Users past the learning curve will be the challenge. Once you found a comfort zone, some understanding, a degree of competency, it is/can be a very pleasant, pleasing & interesting experience. It is different but, @ least, equally dynamic.

I too have been using Windows 8 since the Developer Preview, and have not turned back since.
Windows 8 is fantastic with Metro, sure others may find it difficult to use at first, but change is good!
The only problem I've been having with Windows 8 is that it doesn't perform very well on an old Dell laptop with only 1GB RAM, it is very slow as you would expect, even with minimal settings.
Overall, Windows 8 is a great improvement on all platforms, whether that be Desktop, Laptop or Tablet, and I will be purchasing Windows 8 when it launches later this year.

Zac, if you are now using the Beta, it should not be slow w/ 1GB. You can be running the Beta now, not the DP, anymore.

Personally I find the loading times of the Consumer Preview substantially slower than the Developer Preview on the same machine. Once up and running no problem.
This may have been caused by ATI CCC needing re-installing and also a dodgy CNXT driver. Have uninstalled both and will review situation regarding performance.

Transform TEXT file and redistribute to SQL Server tables in some fast way
Hi,
I need inspiration to how to make things better.
I have text file with informations about our products stock level in customer's warehouses. It is sent to us daily in fixed length format and it has two types of rows
1st row is header with info about who sends file, when was stock inspection done etc...
2nd - Xth row is detail line, there is identificator of products and pieces on stock.
I have created package which works fine and store data from text files to SQL Server tables (Table of product info, table of Customer info, Table of File info, Table of date info and Table with stock numbers which are in connection somehow)
My way is: FOR EACH LOOP container grabs one file by one and in script component are with IO tools prepared 5x SQL statements variables (5x insert of data to 5 tables mentioned above), then variable is simply used in EXECUTE SQL TASK. These SQL statemens always insert only new data to all 5 tables(LEFT JOIN), if products was stored in product table once, it is not possible to store it again, as Product ID is Primary key in table.
SSIS works fine, but i am sure it is wrong way. I had to upload whole history (few gigs) for last few years, and 1 GBs of data was processed 18 hours. It is not problem for me, as we receive daily approximately 10 MB of datas, but anyway I want to know how to do that better and faster. I work with SSIS only few months.
Is there some way by Dataflow task ?
Thanks

Few questions:
- Why have you mentioned For Each Loop, do you handle multiple data loads
- Why not use a Data Flow Task with Source File and OLEDB destination(for data loading)
Please vote as helpful or mark as answer, if it helps

Hi,
we receive 1000 small files of same structure, all such files have unique name. Thats why I was thinking about FOR EACH LOOP. You mean Raw source file or Flat file ? How can i separate HEADER data and BODY data of text file.
Thanks a lot
------------------------------------
Reply:
you can use a foreach loop to loop through files
and then use BULK INSERT Task inside the foreach loop to load text file data into database table in very fast way. Note that you can supress special number of rows from start of file, so don't worry about header, if you have 5 row header, just set First Row as 5 in Bulk Inser Task Editor's Option tab.
------------------------------------
Reply:
use a DFT and check this link. what you have to do in SSIS is to read the file and save it in one column, then using the scripts and knowing the number of column in the destination you can cut off the header and even the footer and save the body into a staging or a final destination table
Please remeber that this link had 3 pages read all of them, get the idea and how the flow of data is been controlled and sliced
good luck

Hi,
I have processed files how you advised, I used DFT, processed data by Conditional spli and derived columns and uploaded it to SQL server by FastLoad, which should be equivalent of Bulk Insert. DAmn, speed is huge , process will be done in few minutes I guess, I will start it like job next week for whole history.
Thanks a to both

Adjusting Microsoft Exchange Replication service Memory via MaximumProcessPrivateMemoryMB in Registry
Has any one tried changing the Memory Limit of the Exchange Replication Service (MSExchangeRepl) via Registry.
Background:
I have been getting a lot of MSExchangeRepl error on Event logs ID 4122. its saying that the Exchange replication service is terminating because it is using 4xxxxxx MiB that exceeds the expected 3072 MiB. It can be overidden by SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Replay\Parameters\MaximumProcessPrivateMemoryMB.
as per checking the logs its constant in Size and is different from the KB with VSS backup, so im wondering could it be that the replication service just needs that much memory.
Question is. has any one tried adjusting the default value? what will be the requirements? (ex. Restart?) . also possible problems that might occur when you change the default value
Reply:
What SP and RU are you at?
I havent heard of anyone ever needing to adjust those values.

Reply:
Can you run the command below and see if SSL is enabled for Replication, if yes, can you disable and test
Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup -Identity <DAGName> | fl
The other KB which you mentioned may nt apply which was addressed in RU6, I'd apply that or got SP2 RU1 at least.

Got it, we will schedule this.
but i also have a question about DAG.
say you have 4 MBX Servers. 1 is located in a different site, then i made a 4 DAG Networks, where two of which only have 1 network in it, could this be the one causing our problem?
------------------------------------
Reply:
Not entirely sure what you mean by 4 DAG networks, but that should not be causing the issue you are seeing I wouldnt think. How much RAM and CPU in those mailbox servers by the wya?
Also note that if you have more than one MAPI client subnet , they should be collapsed into one MAPI network ( and same with replication networks).

use winamp or some other player and see if its WMP12 or something else, also, is it out of sync with all videos or just some? if just some, what type, maybe you need to download the codes for it.

I'm having a similar problem with video and sound synching. WMP & WMC play the sound out of synch but only when playing certain HD files with either .wmv or .divx extensions. When playing these files in the Divx Player there is no problem with synching & the CPU rate runs between 35-44% for the DIVX Player.exe file in Process Explorer . I uninstalled the K-Lite 64 bit codec pack I had installed and this has also not resolved the issue. I never experienced this problem in Windows Vista Home Premium. CPU use of WMC ehshell.exe is at 49.8% when running WMC, which strikes me as exceptionally high. When running these HD files in WMP wmpplayer.exe is running at 52%, again very high IMO.

I've about had it with WMP12. I've posted about this exact same issue on other Microsoft forum sites. I'm beginning to think that it is an issue with the Nvidia series of cards (like was started above). I've got a 9500GT card in mine, and even with that the video will randomly go out of sync and get really slow. Doesn't matter if its HD format or 4:3 ratio. The bulk of the files are in avi. but that's very vague and generalized as there are so many variations on .avi and .mpeg. Here's what I have tried so far, and none of its has fixed it.
Installing additional codec packs (other than the divix)
Uninstalled the codec packs
Pulled my graphics card out to check for damage or fan failure (was fine)
Ran Windows Update (none avail)
Ran CCleaner
Ran Registry Mechanic
Checked active processes and services (eliminated those that were unnecessary)
Turned off Diskeeper's automatic mode on the video storage drives. (turned it back on as it did not fix the issue)
Scanned for viruses and spyware (nothing found)
Watched Task Manager like a hawk for changes, WMP main exe does not put a dent in the processor, stays on 0% usage for the most part. System idle Process goes from 95 to 98% usage during playback and some minor usage from the audio endpoint builder (audiodg.exe) Either WMP is not reporting its usage in task manager correctly or its a process that does not show. The DWM.exe, desktop window manager has more usage (3%) than wmplayer.exe I can play the same shows in SMplayer and they work fine.
I've become used to the handy integration of the media library to quickly search the video library for what I want to watch. As well as its "play all" ability to just have TV play on and on while I do other stuff on the internet using the second screen. Maybe its just the format of the shows, but why can it play one avi file and not the other? I'm not streaming them in from another computer. This is all done locally.
System file checker has been running while I typed this up, it says it found some corrupted files, probably the log on screen mod and my modified imagres.dll file for custom user folder icons. Maybe it will fix this issue to. When Windows was first installed WMP worked perfectly. Come on MS release a hotfix or update for WMP12, you know that we know that you know your software is buggy.

Anyone else notice this?It should be noted that by default VLC player will sync audio and video if they are out of sync (its in the settings). The problem is most likely a bad encode of the video and not your system. This can be fixed by using a program like MKVmerge or Virtual Dub and manually adjusting the audio/video tracks till they sync (major pain in the butt if you don't know what your doing, BUT not to hard to learn).
I will say that in some cases lower end video cards can also be the cause of this issue.

The synchronisation issue applies to me too. I just upgraded my laptop to W7. Initially when I tried to use media player with the W7 welcome vids I had no video. The sound was OK. I downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers for my video card and hey presto, video but it's annoyingly out of synch with the sound. Guess whic card I use - Geforce 8600M GT. I looked at this problem on other sites and guess which cards they use?...That's right 8600 GT.
I suggest that we all wander over to the Nvidia support site and ask them what's going on.
Windows 7 64
Intel Core i7-2630
6GB RAM
ATI RadeonHD 6770M
The 8600 is quite a popular card, I believe, but my problem would lead me to believe nVidia isn't the cause

This is an interesting problem as I have encountered myself while trying to do my own encoding;
I've just got a slick new asus blu ray burner and looking to rip and encode some excellent star wars legacy blu rays into super high quality mp4s, full 6.1 dts acc 1080 ect... After trying a number of methods using dvdfab, making ripping m2ts's and then using ripbot to mp4, and mkv, as well as the native dvdfab encoders and all video and audio seem to be slightly out of sync using windows based media players.
When these files are played on windows players, like mp classic, mp 12, wmc, the lag is present, only a fraction of a second but its there, however run perfectly in nero kw, leading me to believe that nero is much like vlc, making it much harder to pinpoint the cause of this ear-rating audio lag.
The m2ts and other videos outside this project all play fine, and my hardware should be beefy enough to handle it well so I'm wondering where am I going wrong? Why are these windows players different where as if I use a third step audio sync software like Virtual Dub will it not effect the playback in nero or vlc?
Anyone Else notice such issues and were able to resolve them?

Upgrading Tape Drive from LTO1 to LTO5
Hi Guys,
We are looking to replace our old LTO1 Tape drive with a LTO5 tape drive before the end of the year.
At the moment we do weekly to tape that expire after a month & monthly's that expire after 5 years (60 months)
We dont won't to keep paying warranty for the old LTO1 Tape drive once we get the new Tape Drive.
Our plan is to dump the data from all of our LTO1 tapes to a server, then either using DPM or another software to record to a new LTO5 tape
Has anyone had any experience with this or something similar?
Can the Mothly Tapes ID be changed to point to the new tapes?
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.
We are currently using DPM 2010 on 2008 R2, but this new Tape drive would be purchased alone side a new backup server using hopefully DPM 2012

how often do you need to restore from the LTO1?
do you need the warranty? if its only for occasional potential restores and obviously it won't be for disaster recovery as the tapes would be too old within a week.

I had to restore using a monthly tape a couple of times of the last 4-5 years - so not that often.
As I work in the Public Health Sector, I'm am required by law to keep certain data from 99 years, so even though the monthly's expire after 5 years,
they will never be re-used again & kept forever.<o:p></o:p>
If we have to keep the LTO1 drive, we will require warranty as it has failed 3 times in the last 2 years - all resulting in warranty replacements.<o:p></o:p>

Gallery and 1 Star Rating
As you know if you receive a 1 star rating you will lose 5 points. Are these people really evaluating the script? Or just giving 1 star to lose the points?
Here is an example – I received 1 star rating on 7 scripts today from the SAME person - Oliver Lehmann

One of the scripts (List Group Members in Active Directory) was ranked #8 on the top script from 2011 - http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2012/01/02/find-the-top-ten-scripts-submitted-to-the-script-repository.aspx
Is there anything we can do to make sure these guys are "really" evaluating the script?

In Forums and Wiki, only your awarded points can be withdrawn (you can have a minimum of 0 points from here).
In Blogs and Gallery, results from your existing ratings can be eliminated with new ratings (and you can have a negative score from here).
I would suggest changing the concept of "rewarding" the ratings of Blogs and Gallery contributions.
A possible solution of point reduction could be that a 1- or 2-star rating would mean 0 points instead of -5 and -2.
(However it doesn't solve that the average rating still might be reduced with trolling down the ratings.)
