Send a message to everyone

Hello,

there is already a way to send a message to all the mailboxes without creating a distribution list and maintain it ?

Reply:

Hi, a distribution list would be best, but there is nothing stopping you from opening the GAL and selecting all the users.   There is a limit to how many users you can send to at once, but I believe if the recipients are internal its a couple thousand.

Hey, I don't know how to get this out there, But if ya live in a dusty cold area, this is cool. Next time ya change your heater filter spray a light coat of Stihl chan saw air filter oil on it, just light, and  instead of dusting your stuff every week, can do it once a month. smells alittle but after a couple days goes away.

Start Menu (Page)

When I used the Developers Preview (DP), I reserved expressing an opinion about the new Start Menu (or whatever it is now called) until the Consumer Preview (CP) was released.  I figured that since so many people vented vitriol towards the DP's implementation, MSFT would respond accordingly.

Well, here we are with the CP.  And I have to admit that when I loaded CP bare-metal to several of my machines at home and work--so that I did not have an option to revert back w/out just cause--I started to like and enjoy the new Start Menu.  Interestingly enough, I have went from a hater, (using the Start Menu in DP) to an understanding "liker" in the CP, back to a soon-to-be hater.

I now find myself trying to find ways of not hitting the Windows Key to invoke search.  Although I like the way in which I can re-position Metro and the desktop apps, it seems more of a novelty than a real productivity enhancer.  Yes, it is nice that I can rearrange icons and add labels (see below . . . more text below the image), but I find that is not enough.

The limited Start Menu customization does not address the missing functionality of a hierarchical menu/folder system.

Also, why must I click in the lower left corner and have the Start Menu fade in?  Why not have a desktop version that slides in from the left?  Being that the Start Menu (Metro version) is there by clicking on the two pixels in the lower, left corner; what is the harm in having a Start Menu orb (similar to the one with the Windows symbol in Windows 7) that does the same thing?

What would be nice is to have the Metro interface slide out from the Left--from the same area where the user must click--with the current background (wallpaper) blurred and with the icons exhibiting a drop shadow.  This allows MSFT to maintain consistently  between platforms while not producing a jarring interface break for desktop users.

Here's the issue as I see it:

Nothing about the start menu was "broken" for non-touch use.  The font and icon size could be adjusted for (and by) individual users to support their needs.  The high density (compactness) offered by the mouse/pointer interface allowed easy access to a plethora of options and actions, and while some hated any change at all, I loved the Office 2007 ribbon after 2 days of use.  So much so that I upgraded (meaning bought brand new full retail as you know) copies of Office 2007 for the wife and I.  That is an example of "good" change from my perspective, I felt stifled using the previous version, so I upgraded.  $$$ to Microsoft.

I liked Vista, I build my own machines so performance is always near cutting edge, Vista was snappy and very "pretty" compared to the now very old XP UI.  I only went to 1 full retail copy of Vista due to the early issues with print and other drivers, so I ran XP on 5 or 6 machines until 7 came along.  Now every machine in my house (too many I know) is running Win7.

As I began working with 7, my thoughts regarding changes I'd like to see were related to missing functionality, for example, if you are going to introduce a new media format (.wtv) it just seems to make good sense to include an editor of some sort.  A simple cut editor is all we needed, and it was sorely missed (still is).  Many folks complained about the changes in Media Player, while I play music quite a bit while working, the problems never impacted me personally.  But a quick look through the forums showed a sizeable number of complaints, why not address them?

The point (so far) is, there were genuine holes that needed to be plugged, but more importantly for this discussion, not once did I ever find myself wondering why the start menu didn't "get better".  The reason of course is, it didn't NEED to.  The "glitz" of the menu was "right", and unlike the horrible XP "new grouped tasks" never once did I long for the return of the classic menu in Vista or 7, a setting I automatically used on XP installations.  So, it looks like I've adapted to changes over the years with little to no complaint, it would be inaccurate to label me "change adverse.  In fact I've provided several examples of change I readily accepted, in fact, embraced.

Enter Win8DP.  Ugh.  This can't be happening.  I'm supposed to fiddle around with my screeen like those people who pay $100s of dollars a month for smart phone service?  No, this must just be "in your face" because they are trying to push developers to create apps for tablets.  Found the red pill hack, and decided "thank God Windows it still there, I can't be productive with full-screen apps and zero multi-tasking.

So, I decided to play along, and re-installed without the red pill hack.  I figured since Windows was still there, I could see what tablet and phone folks would have to work with.  Note that I have a cell phone that makes actual telephone calls, it also is capable of "texting" but I'm NOT.  My Aunt had a I-Pad that she was showing off, and it took me about 4, maybe 5 minutes to determine this was a media consumption device, and while nifty to browse while taking a dump (sorry, truth) I could never see myself needing or wanting one.  I even decided if I was given one as a gift that it would be returned so I could get something I really wanted or needed.

Then I get word the start menu is gone.  Win8 now represents the future of computing.  Uhh, not a computing future of MINE, guaranteed.  I get the CP, install it, and am disgusted.  But, being a trooper, I decided to force myself to try and make it work.

I tried.  Honestly.  I did.  "But you can just start typing and search...".  I do not care.  If I want to get to event viewer I can do it in a few navigation/clicks in Win7.  If I'm going to be using it a lot, I can pin it to the taskbar, or make a tiny (compared to Win8) desktop icon.  I can delete that icon, unpin from the taskbar, whatever I want to do, without having to type ONCE.

Need to change my Win8 user account stuff?  OK, so now I need to either type to find it, or get pissed off enough to place a huge icon for it on the "desktop"?  And so it goes, each any every thing I wanted/needed to do was met by not a simpler/faster way of doing it, but trying to find the stuff I do with great regularity that some "paradim shape shifter" decided I didn't need to do anymore.

I tried.  I had a "desktop" that had "all" of my stuff on it, and it looked like hell.  Of course when I say "all" of my stuff I'm being facetious, to replace the functionality of the start menu, it would be something on the order of 5 or 6 or more full screen widths of big nasty phone interface styled tiles set to "small".  An even then, it wouldn't be as easy to find as the items in the start menu.

Humans process info without even thinking about it.  Let me explain:  When I go to the Win7 start menu and click all programs, a lot of processing has already been done.  I didn't focus on and read each of the folder names or even pay much attention to their icons, I know where they are somewhat intuitively.

At some level, my brain (without planning it out) is looking for relative position (this is at the top/mid/bottom), then a fine tuning mechanism kicks in (I'm looking for a name thats significantly longer or shorter than the others in the immediate area) and only when this "not really paying attention yet" processing gets me into the right area by something akin to autopilot, I finally focus on which one to click.  Sounds like a lot of work?  Virtually instantaneous.  And this isn't a special capability only I posess, we all do it.

So, can the same thing be done with the huge ugly phone inspired icons?  I'm sure it can, but there are (2) key points:

1).  The spread out nature of the phone icons makes it slower as I wait for the screen to slide to the left as I seek something not currently displayed.  Yeah, I know, there will probably be a function to allow me to control the speed.  Trouble is, the concept itself is broken, speeding it up only serve to try and mitigate an impact on productivity that shouldn't be there in the first place.

2). The start menu structure allows me to bypass tens of items that have nothing to do with what I'm looking for, in essential autopilot mode. I know my "custom" scripting folder is near the bottom, I can find it almost blind on muscle memory alone.  If not find it, get scarey close.  With the win8 "start" I have to see where I am in the several screen-widths worth of huge nasty icon, then start reading them in much more detail earlier because there is no "paying attention but not too much attention" mechanism at work for me.  In other words, just because its "on the screen in one place, what could be easier?!?", it is in fact harder to find and nothing at all like easier.

The phone/tablet interface simply does not belong on productivity machines.  Full screen apps and the lack of robust multi-tasking insures it can never work.  I'm done trying to find work-arounds.  I'm done trying to analyze how i can adapt my workflow to "the new paradigm".  I'm done worrying about Microsoft chambering 2 rounds in their revolver when "tradition" dictates Russian Roulette (apologies to the Russians) is "played" with one. They now have twice as good an opportunity to kill their business as they would normally have, in fact it might equate to 5 rounds the gamble is so over the top.

If Microsoft wants to play in the tablet market, the ideal solution is of course to write a tablet OS.  Examine the competition's products, decide who got what parts right and who got what wrong, and where possible, insert their own enhancements as they try to avoid infringement issues.

you don't make a great tablet OS by killing the desktop, and you don't improve on Win7 by adopting a "paradigm" that is supposed to service 2 wholely separate platforms (consumption and productivity) in one OS.  To do so is frankly, stupid.  You can't saddle either platform with the base requirements of the other, and you can't spend the tens of thousands of man hours required in order to make sure one groups needs don't hurt the other's.  It makes no sense to even try, because you can only end up with 2 scenarios in the end, no matter how hard you try:

1). An OS that saddles both "paradigms" at the expense of one another.
2). An OS that has wholely separate content that has little or nothing to do with each other.  In the end this amounts to huge amounts of code that will be installed on both platforms that does nothing for one or the other, meaning its even worse than bloatware, you wouldn't or couldn't use it even it you wanted to.

My best suggestion is to split them up RIGHT NOW, and assign part of the hundreds of people that are currently assigned to the "lets keep functionality from killing the two separate platforms" team, to a team that writes a bare-metal equivalent level emulator for developers so those who would like to.  Take the rest of them and put them on the task of making virtualization that works like its supposed to (like VMWare WS8), get more people working on imagining and backup instead of providing the now traditional half-baked solutions, and please, for the love of god, build a .wtv editor.  Got spare people, bet you do, how about Window Movie maker working with ALL formats, and don't let this scare you, even allow output to something other than DVD or the proprietary .WMx formats?

There's a lot to be done to get the desktop done right, and there is a lot to be done to get a world class tablet OS in place.  Whomever thought the two would best be served together needs to find a shovel ready job, technology obviously isn't his or her first calling.

I do the exact same thing.  Use it for "restroom" browsing and reading PDF versions of my books.

I am hoping that Steven and crew at MSFT will listen.  Although I am able to make good use Windows 8 in its current implementation, I see that some others at my job--who use the couple of systems that I have setup for that purpose--are having great difficulty navigating and finding the Start Menu.

I am not really super-opposed, but MSFT will have to do some radical changes and bring back some lost functionality of the old version.  Luckily, I can use the officially provided feedback tool to provide not only bug reports, but suggestions as well.

I feel very similar but I must admit that in CP you can now  right click near the bottom of the metro screen and click the All Apps button to bring back a very large portion of the Programs available.

Right clicking in the left hand corner of the Desktop screen brings up some useful system facilities.

Does SSAS Design Limit Columns Outside Hierarchy?

Among other things, I've spent a bit of time trying to understand how to design reports using SSAS and Report Builder, and have continually run into the same roadblock when I create drill down reports.  I often find I need to add a column that requires information outside the hierarchy.  I come from a programming background where I could put things wherever I wanted, but SSAS seems restrictive.  Am I right or wrong about this?

For instance, managers need a report that shows Successful Quotes. So  I created a drilldown report that simply contains the columns Year->Month->SuccessfulQuote and the Measure to the right of it, the Count of Successful Quotes.

Now, someone is saying I should add a column that shows Total number of Quotes.  Since I've already drilled down to Successful Quotes, it seems I cannot simply add a column, but I have to change the whole structure.  Can I simply add a column? Managers do not care if the column is in the hierarchy.  They just want columns added with anything they want in them.

I am thinking about changing the structure to Year->Month->AllQuotes and then two Measures to the right, Successful, and Unsuccessful.  But I really do not want to show All Quotes but only successful quotes.  I cannot think of a way to showing the Count of All Quotes without listing them in the report.  Is this possible?

Hi,

Is "SuccessfulQuote" a member of an hierarchy? If so, why do you not put this into the columns, with "SuccessfulQuote" and "All" being selected?

Frank

Reply:

Yes, SuccessfulQuote is a member of the hierarchy.  I'm not sure I understand.  l didn't want to select All, because of the large number of rows that would be returned.

I just wanted to show the Count of All Quotes, without showing the rows, in a column next to the Count of Successful Quotes (I do want to return rows for successful quotes).

Is this incredibly easy, something I'm just uneducated on?  Or am I correct that SSAS insists all rows be returned regardless of whether they are needed by the enduser?

Hi Dave,

In MDX, "All" is just one entry that is the sum of all its children.

Aaditya,

I have found some info from the below link. Please check this once.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc917670.aspx

Access denied: If you receive an access denied error message, the service account may have been changed to a non-administrator account by using Computer Management or Services. If the service account is changed by using Computer Management or Services rather than SQL Server Configuration Manager, access to the encryption key file (CryptKey.bin in the ..\Data folder) and other files and folders is not automatically granted to the new service account. To solve this problem, you can temporarily change the service account to an administrator account (such as Local System) and start the SQL Server Analysis Services service. After this service starts successfully, you can then use the SQL Server Configuration Manager to change the account to the appropriate non-administrator account.

My problem got solved with the minor addition in the code

spWeb.AllowUnsafeUpdates = true;

Otherwise it is throwing the error.

Rupali,

I was having as issue where the following code (specifically at the AddUser() call) was also resulting in a message "Thread was being aborted."

SPSite site = new SPSite("http://myserver");  SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb();    SPUser user = web.SiteUsers["mydomain\myuser"];  SPGroup group = web.Groups["My Group Name"];    group.AddUser(user);

Your suggestion to run with elevated privileges also worked for me.  I am adding this bit of information in case anyone has the same issue.  Thank you!

Hello!

Instead of the usual EnsureUser I suggest to use the wrapper described here - SharePoint: Wrapper over EnsureUser. Also, in some cases, it make sense to use elevated SPSite and SPWeb created within  RunWithElevatedPrivileges.

The senselessness of Windows 7 search

I know how indexing works, I know how Windows XP search functionality works down to it's inherent "find" command. What I've discovered is that when Windows 7 search functionality works right, it doesn't make sense.

I have these options set up in my Folder Options (Alt > T > o from any folder):

Search tab:
Always search file names and contents (this might take several minutes)
Include subfolders in search results when search results when searching in file folders

Say I have several files:
01simple.php
01simple-download-xls.php
01simple-download-xlsx.php

If I type "simple" into the search box, it says "No items match your search".
If I type in "01simple", it finds all three files.
If I type in "01simple-xls", it finds 01simple-download-xls.php
If I type in "download", it finds "01simple-download-xls.php" and "01simple-download-xlsx.php".
If I type in "-download", it finds every file in the folder.
If I type in "simple-download", it finds nothing.

How can this possibly be a useful feature with such inconsistent results? I have no idea if they're accurate without looking at every file, which makes the feature useless. I'm a programmer and need to find filenames or text in files quickly and easily and now I will have to download 3rd-party software to do something that Microsoft has removed from their wonderful operating system. How do they explain this?

Reply:
Agreed.  This doesn't make finding files by file name easy at all.  I miss *.iso to find my images, for example.

Check this out though, I know it's dreadful, but watch all 5 minutes of it.  That's their intent.  Nobel cause, but it doesn't help people like you and I.

After watching that video thier kind of search does me no good when I have files over many drives. This new and improved search BS in windows 7  misses file names and even what is inside of files allllllllllll the time. Even when I know the file or content is there. Thats why I have to goto my networked windows 2000 computer to do the searching. And this search they show in the video takes many more steps to find something then any other windows ive ever used.. what the heck is going at MS anyways?!?! damn.. I couldnt watch the whole thing. Half way threw I can see just how much longerrrrrrr it would take to find anything if its to be found at alllll LOLOL Search in windows 7 is totaly uslessss.

Oh yeah I totally agree.  It looks great to show some executive, but for us it's not really ideal.  I figure surely this was unfinished, because even Vista had a Search Pane UI to get common sense results.

use the keyword ext. or type.
ext: .iso Will return all files with the extension .iso.
type: .iso Will return any file registered as an ISO image.

If I type "simple" into the search box, it says "No items match your search".

jpk> That shouldn't confuse you as it works the same in WIN-XP search. To find text anywhere in a filename use a wildcard such as * (*simple returns all three files)

If I type in "01simple", it finds all three files.

JPK> Yes as in WIN-XP it will return all files that start with that.

If I type in "01simple-xls", it finds 01simple-download-xls.php

JPK> That is because - is taken as a wildcard (that is different from WIN-XP)

If I type in "download", it finds "01simple-download-xls.php" and "01simple-download-xlsx.php".

JPK> Like above.

If I type in "-download", it finds every file in the folder.

JPK> then you must have download as text in the files. To make sure you only search filenames use the prefix file:

If I type in "simple-download", it finds nothing.

JPK> Same as number 1.

How can this possibly be a useful feature with such inconsistent results?

JPK> Nothing inconsistent if you use the correct syntax.

The Windows 7 file find is ridiculous

The file find in XP Prof was great!

Now in Linux/Fedora 16, the file manager Dolphin has an equally stupid file search.

It starts looking as soon as you start typing

iam using this expression to give values of a column quotepersize  like Sf ,A, U according to a column unittype. can someone show me the correct expression

Reply:

There should be = sign instead of a comma in your first condition and also Fields!UnitType.Value instead of Fields!UnitType in rest of your conditions -

Try the following

=iif (fields!UnitType.value  = -1," ",

     iif(Fields!UnitType.value= 1, fields!quotesperzise.value + "/SF",

     iif(fields!UnitType.value = 2, fields!QuotePerSize.value +"/Ac",

     iif (fields!UnitType.value = 3, fields!QuotePerSize.value &"/U"," "))))

Hope this Helps!

Did you change

I see couple of problems with your expression.

1. In your first condition - You are passing 4 arguments where as IIF statement only takes 3

IIF(Condition,True-part,False-Part)

=Iif(Fields!UnitType.value= -1,"N,2","N,0",fields!quotepersize.value &"/sf")

2. You second IIF should be nested one within the first IIF and it is not.

Would you explain what is your condition/logic for this expression?

Hope this Helps!

Envelope issue in a receive port

I have juste read following in MSDN document :

If your inbound message is an interchange, you cannot use the map you add at the receive port to transform the inbound instance to the envelope instance. The map you add at the receive port can only be used to transform the document instances inside the interchange. If you try to use the map to transform the interchange itself, you will receive an error message similar to the following:

The Messaging Engine failed while executing the inbound map for the message coming from source URL:"\\MyTest\Input\*.xml" with the Message Type "http://MyTest.InboundMessage". Details:"Document type "MyRecord" does not match any of the given schemas."

Does it mean that it is not possible to debatch a message with the envelope mechanism with a map in a receive port (XML Receive pipeline) ?

hi,

The Error

The Messaging Engine failed while executing the inbound map for the message coming from source URL:"\\MyTest\Input\*.xml" with the Message Type "http://MyTest.InboundMessage". Details:"Document type "MyRecord" does not match any of the given schemas."

tells that your generated schema has multiple root nodes.

you can confirm this by looking at the Schemas section in the BizTalk Administration Console.

Refer the below link, which helps to solve the issue.

I think the issue here is as follows:

-When a Map is executed on the Receive Port, BizTalk will actually call an XML disassemble Pipeline Component (this is why we can promote fields on the target schema and still have them promoted when hitting the MessageBox).

-If the target schema is an envelope schema (debatch schema), this will fail when the XML disassembler is called.

I don't see the problem though. We should always do the debatching on the pipeline BEFORE the maps are called. And the maps should be from the debatched message to some canonical internal format.

I am pretty sure that you can't. I still think the question should be why? Why can't you do the de-batching on the source document in the pipeline without having to map it first?

Same behaviour with PassTruTransmit !

Quite strange : does it mean that problem is not associated with DASM ou ASM pipeline component, but with schemas definition.

I do have 2 separate schemas : one for envelope and one for debatched message. Envelope schema has import of debatched message definition.

HyperVBackup - New open source tool

Hi,

I just published an open source tool to perform Hyper-V VM backups, supporting also Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV), supporting Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 8 (including Core and Hyper-V editions)

http://hypervbackup.codeplex.com/

One of the goals of this tool is to be very easy to use (unlike Diskshadow). Here's a basic usage sample:

HyperVBackup -a -o \\server\backup

The above command will backup all virtual machines found on the host, creating a separate zip file for each VM in the provided path (local or UNC).

In the current beta status, the backup features are already working 100%, while the restore features are under development.

Any suggestions and contributions will be highly appreciated :-)

Thanks!

How do you compare what you've did with upcoming VM Replica feature we're expected to have with Hyper-V 3.0?

-nismo

Reply:

Hi Nismo,

the Replica feature addresses a separate need, which is increasing fault tolerance by keeping a copy of a VM up to date on a separate host. It should not be considered as a replacement of a regular backup policy.

Why? I need to keep a copy somewhere so I keep it on another Hyper-V host with access to a proper dedupe/compression enabled storage (I need some storage server for management and some capacity to store backups on in any case). I can configure any snapshot intervals with 5 minute granulatiry and I have as many recovery points as I want. So what's the difference? :)

Reply:

Let's say that replica stands to Hyper-V as Log shipping / mirroring stands to SQL Server. In the DBMS world, log shipping and backups are both employed in a disaster recovery policy as they address slightly different needs. I'm expecting to do the same w our Hyper-V clusters once we'll start to deploy Windows 8.

Back to Hyper-V's Replica, don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan of this feature and I cannot wait to start using it our datacenter as soon as it reaches production level.

There are unfortunately things that are still not public, so it's IMHO too early to start a discussion on Replica, which is also off topic in this thread. :-)

robocopy from Server 2008 and later not usable anymore for server/client backup

Hello,

it took me a while to find out why Windows Server could not handle any more so many clients to backup with robocopy after it was updated from 2003 to 2008 R2. The backup is done with the command
  robocopy \\myclient1\vss-d$ f:\myclient1\d /e /mir /b ...

This command takes more than 6 times longer on a better performing server hardware with 2008 R2 than before with old hardware and 2003. After analyzing I noticed that robocopy from 2003 Resource Kit (version XP010) immediately starts to mirror the directories. Beginning with version XP026 (2008/Vista) an additional pass before mirroring was introduced. The source tree is once scanned completely before robocopy really starts. A client with 115.000 directories and 620.000 files takes 13.5 hours for robocopy to finish (no transfer, only sync). After replacing robocopy with version XP010 it only takes a little less than 2 hours. The disadvantage is that the parameter /dcopy:t cannot be used.

I think it is necessary that robocopy gets back the speed of XP010.

Many Greetings
Michael

Reply:
robocopy for me has always been rapid and a lot more faster than earlier versions. Are you not using several threads as 2003 i believe could only use 1 but 2008 can use a lot more.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Probably for local copies robocopy XP026 or later are faster than the 'old style' XP010, I did not check it. For syncing to a network share I could improve the performance for the 'new' robocopy very, very little by adding /mt:1 not using the default 8 threads. But this improvement is only marginal so one still has to use robocopy XP010.

Many Greetings
Michael

Reply:
Have you tried source compression into a archive files and copying them across, i would imagine it taking a lot less time to send over a larger file that it does multiple smaller ones.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Sending one container file is no option. I need robocopy's mirror mode. Most of the files are not changed and don't need to be copied. It's way too much data to be copied completely each day.

Many Greetings
Michael

Reply:
Michael, I have experienced similar issues with differences between 2003/2008 versions of robocopy. During data migrations where robocopy was used our team always used to specify which version of robocopy to use for a particular copy job as the results varied. So yes, I can agree that there are big differences between the 2003/2008 versions. I would recommend that you keep the 2003 file handy as well, you can still use the old version in 2008.

DPM 2010 & Exchange 2010

So I've had my DPM sync with exchange 2010 every hour for the past year so and everythings been cool no errors. About a month or two ago I started getting errors in DPM indicating that :

Recovery point creation jobs for Exchange Mailbox Database Archive Database on KDNAP-MBX01. have been failing. The number of failed recovery point creation jobs = 1.
If the datasource protected is SharePoint, then click on the Error Details to view the list of databases for which recovery point creation failed. (ID 3114)

Data consistency verification check failed for LOGS of Exchange Mailbox Database Archive Database on KDNAP-MBX01. (ID 30146 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005))

What I've noticed is the mailbox assistant will run while it is trying to do a sync, I've searched the internet and I've seen that this will cause problems. I've set the mailbox assistant from running every 4 hrs to 8 hrs and I've got less errors in DPM. However it still does occur. I think what has happpened here is that my archive database has grown larger over time and it takes the mailbox assistant longer to run now.

My question is, is there a way to get DPM to stop the mailbox assistant (Probably not) while doing a incremental or full backup

Or is there a way to get DPM to check if there is an event running prior to doing its backup some sort of maint window thing?

This error does clear itself up after the Mailbox assistant finished and DPM on its normal schedule next hour does it's sync. I just find it annoying that this is happening. Anyone else  have an similar problem or a work around?

Populating a repeat field from a list

I have a sharepoint list created from another form(alpha).  For simplicity, only two fields in the list FAILURE and SUBMITDATE.  This list can have multiple FAILUREs with the same SUBMITDATE.  Each FAILURE is recorded as a separate record.

In another form(beta).  I need to list those multiple FAILUREs in a repeat field/table that correspond to another DATE field in the beta form, filter out all the FAILUREs that do not correspond beta DATE.

I can do a dropdown list all day with a filter on it just fine.  But the users demand a populated list.  I can populate a repeat field within beta with the whole sharepoint list of alpha.  But can not figure out how to filter it.

I have seen some other threads describing this situation but I get mixed up the in the field definitions and where they are.

Anyhelp would be appreciated,

Andrew

Information regarding VSS / VolSnap errors

Hi,

We have seen a failure in our Third party backup software recently when trying to backup our file server. From the server event log I can see VolSnap 24 and VolSnap 35 errors indicating an issue with the size of the shadow copy. This is now a 1 TB disk, what is the recommended free space required for a disk of this size (10 % ?) What is this size dependendt on. Our full back up runs for 15 Hours at the weekend, would this length of time require a larger Allocation. Can the shadow copy be set to create on a seperate drive eg. G drive 1 TB data, H: Drive 100 GB for Shadow Copy / VSS only?

Any help with these questions or link to an overview of VSS would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you can't do it in the query, you could do it in the report by grouping on Empid and Sal, and then in your field expression for Status, change it to =Max(Fields!Status.Value)

Sure it is possible.

It's just a programming... you need to create a web part project, define all exposed properties, define a data source for your web part, create a data layer that prepares your data and finally create a control that will display some data as the final result.

Synchronous Wait Chain Lock - I hate it when that happens ;)

Hi All,

My first time here and hopefully I brought you a puzzler to work on :)

I had trouble with my Ethernet Adapter which was attached to an External Virtual Adapter being used for a VM so after fussing with it for a bit decided to disconnect the VSA/VSC, "not sure which you all use as an approved acronym, note to self, must get into training and labs soon :)", from the Eth adapter so as to isolate my trouble shooting.

I got the bar letting you know its working to disconnect the switch and was lucky enough to be presented with the challenge of it now going away ;)

Previously no issues like this with the server 8 dev so this was new.

Love the new task manager with all the extra info, which led me to the conclusion that I had encountered a synchronous vs asynchronous wait chain.  I tested this by trying to delete the csrss or the svchost alone and both together etc... and put my computer to bed multiple times, quite elegantly I might add, no bsod just a nice little count down letting me know it was going to take a little sleep.  This all makes sense as there are many other services tied to those two PID's.

The ms article on wait chain traversal is here  Wait Chain Traversal

This the popout from the task manager below.  I will be sifting through the dumps for additional info but thought I would throw this out and see if in fact there was a known quick fix or workaround to kill the processes with out dumping my machine :)

Thanks for all you guys and gals do

xclr8tr

popout from task manager

Edit:

Still looking for the dumps, I thought they were in root under C:\ but must be wrong, will continue to look until someone provides more direction.

As for the root cause of this event:

User error I'm sure lol :)  in server 8 dev there were not so many things to make mistakes with and you were prevented somewhat from making them or at least warned.  I imagine it will be the same with the beta as they sort things out.

There were added some choices, which I can't get to at the moment, in the dev addition toward the end when setting up virtual networks, It looks like there may be more in the beta, an expample would be IPSEC encryption which is under settings after you have selected the VM you're about to use.  In beta I noticed that some of these fields were pre-filled and I didn't bother to uncheck them as I figured they were the default, in reflection though they weren't selected in server 8 dev.

The Ipsec seems to be part of the problem or at least a symptom of where I made a wrong choice.  I only know that because if I go back to both Device Manager and Network Adapter settings and look at the adapters with the selection to not hide system files or folders and I see that I now have two adapters for Ethernet LAN and two for WiFi one of which has Ipsec crypto stuff on one of the tabs and the other one showing the typical information I'm used to looking at.

I'll admit to not being a formally trained Admin and am just getting ready to dive into the deep end of they pool because of my new found love of all things Virtual and Hyper-V this stuff is truly a game changer at this point in space and time unlike the past with Citrix etc... people weren't ready then.  Now everyone is moving in the same direction at the same time and I want a piece of this most likely from the sales side with an Admin perspective to boot...  Got carried away there ha ;)

So I don't know if there were supposed to be two each or not.  but I disabled one yesterday to do some testing not being aware there was a second one.  I went in  this morning and I saw the one I hadn't disabled and so wasn't looking for the one I had.  I guess you find what your looking for eh.

I believe this somehow caused the problem and again not sure of the specifics as only the dump and events catalogs  would tell us that. so will be making my way to the events just prior to lock up.  Which I am still stuck in as I can not get the machines to boot nor get into either the virtual switch adapter nor the settings for the VM to check and make changes.

Don't worry, this isn't an enterprise environment, just me and five laptops ha ha my own little lab.

I've been rambling so if you need to  please as me for the very specific information that you need to have and its whereabouts and I will get it.

I'm sure that this will happen again to others as the defaults need to be set differently or set to communicate there dependencies etc...

Can't think of a better way to learn, make all the mistakes you can now, if your not making lots of mistakes your not learning... I'm making lots of mistakes LOL ;)

xclr8tr

Edit:

Adding additional data

This is a typical Error message I'm seeing regarding the virtual switches

Failed to complete offload policy operation on port 10A42D50-0C4C-4481-8FFA-940CE54D8770 (Friendly Name: Dynamic Ethernet Switch Port) on switch 0F702297-DDB3-41C4-B8B7-4330438BC02D (Friendly Name: Ext LAN VSC) - IPSecOffloadLimit: 512, VMQOffloadWeight: 100, IovOffloadWeight: 100, QueuePairs: 0, InterruptModeration: 0. Reason: Unknown

I will save my minidumps for the MS Employees if they need, I have 4.

It was difficult to extricate myself from the virtual switch adapter but now that I'm out I'm going to reset everything and start again.

Can you err, restate the issue clearly without all the funny fluff, side remarks, and assumptions? It's not clear what the actual problem is -- are you having an issue with an Ethernet adapter bound to a virtual NIC in Hyper-V? Or simply with offloading?

I started up a new vm, a linux distro. Backtrack 5 r2 to be precise. Which ran fine in the prior server 8 dev.  It ran fine initially in server 8 beta.

After having shut it down and then coming back the next day the Eth external adapter wouldn't fire up the VM, it was attached to the VM with a regular Network Adapter vs a legacy adapter.

I tried then to disconnect the Network adapter in order to create some additional isolation to trouble shoot.

The Network adapter would not release from the VM nor the Switch until I finally deleted it out of the device manager having crashed the beta several times in between while trying to disconnect it normally.

The major difference was the default setting on network adapter, set to IPsec offload and VMQ enabled.

I now have it hooked back up with out those those enabled and it is running fine.

I won't debate whether I should have been using a legacy vs normal adapter etc...  That may have been fubar on my part.

I do think that the adapter and switch should have released as usual without spending hours watching my computer crash as I struggled to find a way to release it.

Possibly a warning of  some kind in popup, if configuration is not supported initially.

Its a beta so I expect problems... posted just in case others were facing similar issues disconnecting adapters from the virtual switch.

I found the Wait Chain information and reference while trying to determine how to disconnect from the task manager side of things after determining that what I deemed to be the normal way was futile.

Yes I did terminate the PID's to see if I could escape it without a crash which didn't work.  This only hastened the crash though as it would crash on its own if I did nothing.

At this point all is well in my world as I study further the new adapter features and try to discover which ones will be useful for both my windows and linux vm's and why...

So having said all that I would again say it was my mistake in hooking them up initially in an unsupported way and would like to know if there is an easier way to disconnect should it happen again or should I just do that through deletion in the device manager.

Sorry this is long, feel free to summarize if you like (or just call me an idiot ;)

Thanks for checking on me and let me know if you enjoyed this diatribe lol :)

Edit:

To be more succinct and directly answer your question... the issue was regarding the Ethernet adapter bound to the NIC in Hyper-V and my inability to affect it's release.

As for the offloading I understand the concept "to offload something", but do not fully understand the implications, needs or requirements as it pertains specifically to IPsec and would be open to reference or instruction or will eventually arrive at it by way of my friend Google :)

Still trying to get a one-line description of the actual issue... Are you saying you couldn't start your VM? Did you receive any errors at startup?

------------------------------------
Reply:

I was unable to start VM.  I don't have the exact error but had to do with the Adapter and I believe it also pointed to IPsec.  When I tried to disengage the adapter I was unable to although I did get the waiting bar with the line that goes back and forth.  After a period of time it just crashed but rather than a classic BSOD event I received a quick prompt with countdown of maybe 5 or 10 seconds as it shut itself off.  Possibly a new rendition of the classic blue screen but doing the minidump during countdown, my guess.

RDP ( Terminal server session) unable to map client's Drive and printer

Hi,

We are using window server 2003 SP2 as a terminal server. We have observed that suddenly RDP clients computer drive and printers are not getting mapped (redirected) in terminal sessions. We diagnosed this issues so hard and unable to find resolution. Lastly we formatted the OS and reinstalled and it worked for 2-3 hours and redirection was happening. Then, after 3 hours again same issue of redirection occurred. We checked the event viewer but nothing comes related to this issues.

F.Y.I., we have installed all the relevant printer drivers though it does not redirect. I guess there must setting which needs to configure for terminal server. Because we already formatted OS and found such issues. We too checked the setting of RDP-TCP properties > client Settings > In disable the following uncheked all except audio mapping. Please help me to rectify this issues. Support and assistance with this regards are warm welcome.

Thanks,

Hi,

Please ensure that the policy that disables printer redirection is turned off.

The full path of this node in the Group Policy Management Console is:

Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Printer Redirection

Do not allow client printer redirection:

This policy setting allows you to specify whether to prevent the mapping of client printers in Terminal Services sessions.

You can use this policy setting to prevent users from redirecting print jobs from the remote computer to a printer attached to their local (client) computer. By default, Terminal Services allows this client printer mapping.

  • If you enable this policy setting, users cannot redirect print jobs from the remote computer to a local client printer in Terminal Services sessions.
  • If you disable this policy setting, users can redirect print jobs with client printer mapping.
  • If you do not configure this policy setting, client printer mapping is not specified at the Group Policy level. However, an administrator can still disable client printer mapping by using the Terminal Services Configuration tool.

Ensure that the spooler service is running on both the client and Server.

When the "mapping drivers" is gone suddenly, you can type \\tsclient\ in the RUN or Explorer windows console to see if the "mapping drivers" is exists.

Please also check the Group Policy if it's set to disable Drive Mapping.

The full path of this node in the Group Policy Management Console is:

Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Device and Resource Redirection

Make sure you have installed the latest updates for Terminal server.

Please also make sure you have been installed the latest NIC driver in Terminal server.

The client computer have installed RDC 6.1 or above (Windows XP with Service Pack 3 and above includes this). You also can install the Remote Desktop Connection 7.0.

User could then manually pin many applications in one go from the All Apps interface. This would require adding a app bar to all apps screen, and allowing multiple apps to be selected, and pinned to the start screen.

Or/And...Additionally start screen should automatically create groups, when large apps are installed, helping user from getting a very cluttered interface

Sound interface

THX TrueStudio Pro was something installed with this new PC I bought. Its feature "Smart Volume" adjust all sounds fx. so no matter what video you play, the sounds will be arranged in defined range. But then when you play a game and want to lower only the music, THX SmartVolume keep on raising it again, because its range always center around middle and not fx. from very low to middle.

So maybe the windows sound mixer control would be better, if the ALL scroller had a minimum (= the lowest sound user recoqnize) and a maximum (= the highest sound that does not disturb neighbours)

Exchange 2010 SP2 Install failed at Mailbox Role in DAG

This is my situation.
I Have a Exchange 2010 SP1 DAG with two Exchange servers. I have first made both databases active on the first exchange server and suspended the replication. Also disabled the replication network. The installed SP2 on the second server without any problems.
Then activated the databases on the second Exchange server. Enabled the replication network and waited untill the databases had the status healty. Deactivated the databases on the first Exchange server en disabled replication.
I am now trying to install SP2 on the first Exchange server, this upgrad failes at the mailbox role. With te error: The following error was generated when "$erro.Clear();start-SetupService - Servicename MSExchangeSA "was run: "Service 'MSExchangeS' failed to reach status'Running' on this server.".

Service 'MSExchangeSA' failed to reach status 'Running' on this server.

I have already rebooted the server, restarted the upgrade, still the same error. Also remode the "Watermark" key in hklm\software\microsoft\exchangeserver\v14\mailboxrole. Restarted the server, still the same error.

Any ideas?

Hi kogam,

Do you only have two Exchange 2010 servers with all Server Roles installed? If yes, you cannot manually start the Transport Service on the second DAG member(SP2)? What's the error when you try to start the service?

Please make sure all Services are running on the first DAG member before you install SP2.

You should have run the StartDagServerMaintenance.ps1 script to put the DAG member into maintenance mode.

yes, even Microsoft's TMG (Threat Management Gateway) offers the HTTPS Inspection as one of its capabilities. It works like the intermediate firewall or proxy faking the remote server certificates - when a client request is proxied, the proxy connects to the target web server itself, obtaines its certfiicate and copies its properties to a newly crafted certificate (which is also signed by the proxy itself). This way, the proxy effectively terminates the SSL tunnel, decrypts the traffic, inspects it and again re-encrypts it on the other side.

Basically, there is not a simple way how to make yourself "encrypted" inside the proxied tunnel. Some options may be:

a) web sites, that require clients to have their own client certificates cannot be inspected, because this requirement ensures mutual certificate authentication and the proxy cannot fake the client certificates

b) you can use some "anonymizers". This way, although your traffic is not encrypted, the proxy will not see your actuall URL that you type into the browser - this may be a lot sufficient often, because the proxies often log the URLs and nobody will see what URL you were accessing. Though the contents of the web pages could be inspected for malware and some denied words for example. If you want to prevent such attempts, you would block the anonymizer sites.

c) you could also connect to a SSL VPN (for example Microsoft SSTP). This traffic would create double tunnel while the proxy would probably inspect just the VPN wrapper and would not see into the internal HTTPS traffic. If you wanted to preven such attempts, the proxy may be able to block such VPN connections.

Some suggestions on Metro & Windows 8

I'd like to make a few suggestions on improvements to Metro & Windows 8:

  1. Allow users to change the Metro background, and provide some nice backgrounds by default, instead of just plain colors.
  2. Allow users to change icons, and possibly provide some icon sets. For example, if I don't like the Mail icon, let me use my own.
  3. An introduction/tour of the Metro interface would be very welcome.
  4. Make it easier to integrate a Windows Live ID with a domain account.
  5. Proper error reporting on the setup of an Exchange account, there's no way of knowing why you're not able to connect to your server.

Why can't I get admxprox.dll? (IIS install)

Hi there. I am having trouble installing IIS on my machine. I found the first .dll file (can't recall the name) in Service Pack 3 (XP Professional) but can't find admxprox.dll (the next file I need for the install).

I've reinstalled SP3 and searched everywhere for a possible location to no avail. Oh yes, and it also tells me to load the XP Pro CD, but I don't have it since our IT dept installs XP without the actual disks.

Just because your IT department dont have physical CDs anymore doesnt mean they cant make you a CD. If they are able to install XP, they have the installation files, if they have the installation files they can make a CD with those for you. Or simply put the files on a USB stick if thats more convenient.

Why do you need IIS on your client PC though?

Yes!  Their sensitivity and area of activation could use some tweaking.

I have a dual monitor setup with the primary in front of me and the secondary to the left.  It can get frustrating to stab the mouse cursor into the lower-left to activate the start menu without it going onto the secondary monitor.

If you click the far right of the taskbar it activates the Show Desktop function and you see the task bar highlight a rectangular portion of the taskbar indicating you pressed the "button".  I think there should be the same thing for the Start Menu on the left with the addition of the line that used to be there in Windows 7 to give context that the area can be clicked.

Personally, I think they will always be difficult to use.

Its something invisible on something visible. For function, visible > invisible and therefore invisible poses a major problem especially when its combined with area that's functional visibly.

Even if it were made visible its gonna get in the way at times when its activated by floating.

how to write formula for custom site column validation inside receiver

hi,

When i written my custom site column validation inside the event reciver in the below way.I am getting error like "column1 value cannot be valdiated with other column2".Any suggestion/Approach could be great.

               SPField _expirationField = Lists.Fields.GetFieldByInternalName("ExpirationDate") as SPField;

               _expirationField.ValidationMessage = "Should not be less then current date";

Reply:

Using out of the box SharePoint, a field/column validation cannot refer to any other column. If you want to validate fields against each other you must use the list validation.

Your expression "=AND([ExpirationDate]>=TODAY())" makes no sense as you are not ANDing anything.

Sharepoint asks for my password 3 times but never shows retrieves the Central Administration page?

Hello Community

With Windows 2003 Server as the domain controller I installed Sharepoint 2010
Evaluation by clicking SharepointServer on a member server running Windows 2008 Server
Enterprise Service Pack 2 with SQL Server 2008R Evalution  64bit edition.

    The instructions are:

-Click the link to run the Prerequisites

        -Install Sharepoint 2010

The installation was successful then I ran the Configuration Wizard to
install SQL Server 2008R evaluation.

The Sharepoint Configuration Database and the Sharepoint Content database
were created successfully in SQL Server.

The problem is that when I click finish the Wizard is supposed to take me to
the Central Administration page but it didn't.  Instead I got an error stating:

"The handle is invalid. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070006 (E_HANDLE))"

To try and fix it by restarting  IIS Admin Service, Sharepoint Central Administration v4 and
Sharepoint 2010 Timer.

I click "Central Administration" the results were:

A dialog box appears and I type in my password 3 different times but I
never get in instead I get:

Now the address bar displays "<machine name:port number>\_layouts\error.aspx"

    The page displays "Unexpected error"

Everytime I click Central Administration is asks me for my password 3 times but doesn't retrieve Central Administration page.

(In Adminstration tools IIS6 was installed but I think only for compatibility because it is
blank and if I run "inetmgr" IIS7 pops up)

Finally my browser is IE8 and in IIS7 I stopped and started "Central Administration" then
click "Central Administration" and the results were:

    The address bar displayed "<machine name:port number>"

    The page was blank

What I could see is that Sharepoint 2010 has a 14 hive and earlier the address bar had

    "<machine name:port number>\_layouts\error.aspx"
and the page  displays "Unexpected error"

but after I stopped and started Central Administration I only go to

    "<machine name:port number>"
    and the page is blank

I don't know what all of this means but I think if I can successfully run Central Administration
I will get the default page in the address bar.

The question is why am I not getting to the default page from the hive for Central Administration if
that is what is supposed to appear and how come I am being prompted for my password 3 times
but doesn't retrieve the Central Administration page?

A wee tip/suggestion:

Rt Clk on .pdf file
Set it (them) to default to 'Other' (PDF) Reader rather than the out-of-the-box Windows Reader (App) when opening.

I think this still works too, haven't had a chance to try it though.

Safe mode using bcdedit

The BCD store settings would be the preferred method to enter safe mode on systems that need to do so.

The bcdedit /enum /v line doesn't work.

Going through msconfig right off the bat works.  I went Win8 to Safe Mode, that way, easily.

The F8, Shift+F8 method I can't try.  Minor disadvantage of duel-boot.

In addition,  I find these two links helpful as to recovery/repair options in Win 8, and one I use often in Win 7 that also works in Win 8 when others don't is to use the bootrec switches from a command prompt outside of Windows that you can access using the info below:

How to Run Automatic Repair in Windows 8:

Here's some context for some of these Recovery/Repair options by Desmond Lee, a PM on the Win RE team:

I have an entry for Windows 7 in my bcd store so I can't use F8 either.

The only problem with using msconfig is that you have to be able to get into Windows in the first place, which usually isn't the case.  I usually only use safe mode if the system isn't booting the normal way.

It'd be nice if F8 worked with dual-boot systems.

Fully concur w/ you on all points.

Yeah, I don't have or get the DP path listed, in the 1st place... so it's all moot.

But, yeah, I recall when I went to Safe from msnconfig, "Well, this ain't much good unless, which you likely wouldn't be"... Umm, duh.  So, exactly, not much help, lol.
