Unable to run Windows Computer Tasks

Hi

When I try to run certain 'Windows Computer Tasks' such as IPCONFIG for an exchange server through SCE2007, I receive the following message:

Health Service 'exch1.dm.local' in which the location monitoring object is contained is not available. Make sure that the computer hosting the Health Service is available and verify that the Health Service is running.

Other tasks such as Computer Management, Ping work ok.

I tried restarting the service on exch1 and also tried re-installing the health agent, but the same result occurs.

EXCH1 is a Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2 running Exchange 2003

SCE2007 server runs Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2

Also, here are the event errors that occur on EXCH1 repeatedly. This issue is only occuring on EXCH1.

Hi,

May I know if there are any firewall exists between SCE and client? If yes, you may like to turn off it as a test.

Also I would like to confirm with that does this issue only happens on the client EXCH1? And is there any other strange symptom on the EXCH1?

Thanks.

Hi

There is no firewall between the two, and yes this issue only occurs on that client.

EXCH1 is a production exchange server. I had an issue installing the health agent in the beginning because the Administrative shares were disabled.

The Events 21400 and 1103 (above) are generating continuously .

Hi,

May I know what exactly happened during the agent insatllation and how you resolve it? And, I am not quiet sure what do you mean the administrative shares were disable, could you provide more information about it? Is that share is opened now?

Thanks.

When I installed the agent for the first time, the installation failed. The error message said that Administrative shares were disabled. The KB directed me to change the value of a registry entry to "1" on EXCH1 which enabled the following on shared folders C$, ADMIN$, E$, IPC$, Resources$. I can't remember the exact KB or error. But after doing that it installed the agent sucessfuly.

As I mentioned in the first post, the following events are continuosly logged on the exchange server EXCH1.

I have performed further research. The command ping and computer management are run locally, but the ipconfig run remotely.

Please check if there any alert indicates the remote health is available. And check the opsmgr in event viewer for related information.

Hope it helps.

Importing post from the Newsgroups

Importing the posts into the Web forum has made it very difficult to use, in that the imported posts appear to be listed in 'added date' order, not 'original post' order. It's nigh on impossible to find the genuine new posts from even a few hours ago. Additionally, IMO the Newsgroup way of listing the posts is far more usable.

Agreed. Surely there is a way to make the old migrated threads show their true date/time and push them down in the list.

Search Companion vs OpenXML files

Search Companion (XP SP2) does not list OpenXML and OpenDocuments if you select "search for documents option"

SP# and Pagemaker

Installed SP3 and now Pagemaker 6.5 will not load its template (.T65) files.  Standard files (.P65) are OK.  Uninstalled SP3 and all is right.  Very strange!

Reply:
Sounds reminicent of what happened to some people when SP2 first rolled out.  I didn't get it myself, but I got hit by DivX.  As it turned out, anyone using XP SP2 in combination with DivX 5.2.1 or earlier, any right-clicking on explorer.exe crashed explorer.exe.

How up to date is Pagemaker?  I don't mean to say "go buy 7.0" - but there are some updates for 6.5 here:

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?platform=Windows&product=34

Updating DivX fixed the issues I ran into.  For those that had issues with software operability it very often was an update by the software vendor that resolved it in the end.  At least with SP2, some of that was expected as D.E.P. was introduced and some "guidelines" to how XP manage memory outlined in SDK's that encouraged developers to follow said "guidelines" became rules in XP after SP2.  Some software and drivers had to be re-written/updated to allow for the changes in how it would now need to work with memory.  It really sucked for those that had drivers for their hard-disk controller that were in need of a new driver as they would typically be the ones that would install SP2 and find themselves in a blackscreen upon reboot, or if they were lucky, a reboot-loop (which made it easier to uninstall SP2 until the drivers were updated).

I'm ranting.  Try updating PageMaker.  Try an emulation mode also.

Let me know how it goes and we'll take it from there.

Can you please mention the build of SP3 you have tried this on?

Moreover, Do you have the Pagemaker updates released by Adobe installed?

BTW, does Adobe still provide lifecycle or technical support for Pagemaker 6.5? Don't get me wrong, this is just a basic and, simple question without any other intentions. I had used PM 6.5 before but now I don't.

Reply:

It works fine with SP2 installed.  Only SP3 gives it problems.  I do not know how to run PM in emulation mode.

------------------------------------
Reply:
It is not that hard to launch a program in emulation mode.  Just make a new shortcut to the programs executable, then on the properties for the new shortcut choose an emulation mode.

I usually check the original shortcut in the Start Menu, and click Properties, to see where the executable is.  Then I go to the folder and manually make a new shortcut to the same .exe file.  Once created, right-click the new shortcut and select Properties.  On the Properties window you will have options including emulation modes.  These were made to increase support for legacy software on XP - to ease migration pains way back at XP's launch.  I also rename the new shortcut so that it reads the same as the original shortcut, but with "(Win98)" after it (if I was using Windows 98 emulation, for example).  If the shortcut is long term for any reason, I place it in the Start Menu alongside the original.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Thanks for the info. Basically I wanted Microsoft to be aware of the problem and correct it before the final SP3 comes out.  I will try the emulation mode meanwhile.

Spatial Changes in the February CTP

Just wanted to let everyone here know that there is a list of the spatial changes made in the February CTP available now on Ed's brand-new blog:

http://blogs.msdn.com/edkatibah/archive/2008/02/28/new-spatial-features-in-the-february-ctp-ctp-6.aspx

Some often requested features such as a primary filter operator and geodetic reduce were added, and a relatively small behavior change related to degenerate objects was made.  With a content-rich and new feature laden introductory post like this, I can't wait to see what he manages for a follow-up.

SQL Server 2008 Installation or service start/stop problems today

Microsoft has identified a bug in all SQL Server 2008 versions affected by today's leap day, Feb 29th, 2008:

We have recently discovered an issue with SQL Server 2008 CTPs that result
in SQL Server 2008 not starting or installing on Feb 29 GMT only. We
recommend that you do not run, install or upgrade this CTP on Feb 29 GMT to
minimize any impact in your environment. You can install starting on March 1
GMT. If you have an immediate issue that cannot wait until march 1st GMT
contact sqlbeta@microsoft.com before taking any further steps.

EDIT: The opportunity for this bug has passed.

Product Announcement - FarPoint Spread for BizTalk Version 2

Spread for BizTalk was intially released in 2006 as a BizTalk Excel Pipeline Disassembler.  We have continued to refine the product based on customer feedback and are currently at version 1.7.

This week we announced the release of Version 2 of Spread for BizTalk!

Spread for BizTalk Version 2 includes a BizTalk Pipeline Spreadsheet Disassembler and a BizTalk Pipeline Spreadsheet Assembler.

The disassembler parses Excel streams (XLS & Excel 2007 XML, CSV, TXT) into XML data that maps to schemas created using the Spread for BizTalk Spreadsheet Schema Wizard.

The pipeline assembler uses the XML data in BizTalk Applications to create Excel (XLS or Excel 2007 XML), and PDF documents.  The BizTalk developer can use the Spread for BizTalk Spreadsheet Format Designer to specify the formatting of the document produced by the assembler.  Both the assembler and disassembler are codeless solutions and the wizard and designer are integrated into Visual Studio 2005.

We have produced a video that presents a compelling argument for the inclusion of Spread for BizTalk in any BizTalk Server deployment where the integration of Excel documents is important: http://fpoint.com/biztalk/videos/SfBTV2-2.aspx

We have also created an overview datasheet: http://fpoint.com/biztalk/SpreadBizTalkDS.pdf

More information can be found at: www.fpoint.com/biztalk

[Tutorial]Windows Vista: Snipping Tool

Windows Vista: Snipping Tool

By-Rajbir Singh

Introduction to Snipping Tool:
Microsoft Corporation has introduced a new application called 'Snipping Tool' in its latest version of Windows i.e. Windows Vista. Snipping Tool lets you take screen shots of your Windows applications or a certain part of the screen. Windows users can now use this powerful application to take screenshots instead of using the old method- Alt-PrintScreen or simply Printscreen.

How to start Snipping Tool:
Please follow these steps to start the Snipping Tool:
1. Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.

2. Click 'All Programs'.
3. Now click 'Accessories' folder from the menu.
4. From programs that appear click 'Snipping Tool'. The program will now start.

Snipping Tool will be added to Quick Launch Bar when you run the Snipping Tool for the first time.

How to use Snipping Tool:
The program looks like this:

The Snipping Tool provides the user with many options to take the screen shots. You can get these snipping options by clicking the small arrow alongside the 'New' button. Following are the snipping options:

1. Free-form Snip- This option lets you draw a shape of your choice to take a screen shot. Once the user has drawn the shape & leaves the mouse button the snip is created.

2. Rectangular Snip- As the name suggests, this option lets you create a rectangular selection. Once the rectangle is drawn the snip is created of the area.

3. Window Snip- This option lets you take a snip or a screen shot of an entire window. All the contents of that window will be captured in this snip.

4. Full-screen Snip- This option lets you capture the entire screen area.

Snipping Tool Options:
To change the Snipping Tool options or preferences click on the 'Options' button.

A new window will appear:

These options do the following:

1. Hide instruction text- This hides the instruction text, if selected.

2. Always copy snips to the Clipboard- If enabled, it copies all the snips to the Clipboard so that you can paste it in any image editing application and edit as per your requirements.

3. Include URL below snips(HTML only)- If enabled, this option lets you add the link(URL) of address of the website you are viewing in Internet Explorer if saved in MHT/Single file HTML file format.

4. Prompt to save snips before exiting- If enabled, the snipping tool will prompt you to save the snips before exiting.

5. Display icon in Quick Launch bar- If enabled, the Snipping Tool will be displayed in the Quick Launch bar.

6. Show screen overlay when Snipping Tool is active- When enabled the Snipping Tool interface will be hidden while creating a snip.

7. Ink color- Lets you choose the colour of border of the snip.

8. Show selection ink after snips are captured- If enabled, it displays a border in the selected colour on the snip.

Saving Formats:
The Snipping Tool lets you save the snip or screen shot in various file formats. You can save the snips in PNG, GIF, JPEG, MHT file formats.

Tools:

Highlighter Tool:
It lets you highlight certain parts of the snip.

Pen Tool:
It lets you draw and annotate in the snip. You can choose the desired colour of the pen and even customise the tip & thickness of the pen.

Send Snip Tool-
It lets you send the snip as an embedded image or as an attachment.

Eraser Tool-
It erases anything which was drawn by the pen tool or highlighted by the highlighter tool.

The Final Word:

Pros:
The Snipping Tool is the first of its kind in the history of Windows. Its now easier to take screen shots of any area of the screen without pressing the Alt-PrintScreen combination without any need of third party application. It comes free with Windows Vista.

Cons:
It doesn't provide any option to add text to the snip. The only way you can add text is by using the pen tool or by editing the snip in an image editor. Microsoft should provide this option in the future through updates.

Conclusion:
The Snipping Tool is a boon for the those who want to share the snips with others to discuss things or just for the sake of fun & that too without spending on third party applications!
Surprise the users with new tools every now and then, Microsoft!

Expandable Thread Headers

One of the nice things about the Outlook Express news reader is the ability to show all of the headers (subject lines) of a thread in an expandable tree view, which is collapsed initially. This enables one to quickly review a thread previously visited and decide if it may be necessary to check out the latest posts to see if an issue has been resolved, or add comments to it. Since this web interface requires posting back to view each message, this would speed up the process.

Hello,

I'd like some information on the error message you are receiving  At what point during installation of the latest version do you see this error?  A screenshot of the message would be helpful too.  Do you recall installing an older version of the Upgrade Advisor and if so, was it the beta (prior to Sept.) or the RC version?  Lastly, are you installing the application as a user with administrative privelages?

Reply:
Hi!

The error appears about 75% - 80% of installation!
If you wanna see a screenshot of the alert messagge take a look at this link: Error
The older version i believe it is the RC but i'm not sure, I just know that i found a previous version (3,99 Mb of Dimension) and i tried to install it. The installation goes good but when i uninstalled it, the problem with the upgrade remained.
I'm installing this tool logged with an user with administative privilages.

Thanx.

I ran the BETA download after I got 1.0, and then it asked me if I wanted to fix errors, click yes and then it will work.

Hi Bill,

You wrote that you used two versions of Vista Upgrade Advisor (VUA). Please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all versions of VUA. With both the beta version and the 1.0 version, you may have two entries.

Go to your temp directory and delete all files that start with VUA. Your temp directory is C:\Documents and Settings\ your alias \Local Settings\Temp

Install and run VUA 1.0. You wrote that it ran for hours. If it runs longer than 15 minutes, stop it.

Go to your temp directory and look for files starting with VUA. You should have four files. If you have less than four, post back with the names of the files. If one is missing, we may be able to help you with just that information. If all four are there, then please contact me offline so I can get your temp VUA files.   You can send mail to  Ba-mmoore@CmicrosoftD.com - this is a no spam address, just remove the capital letters for my address.

Hello yops,

That seems very strange.  A couple of things to try:

1. Do you have the Beta installer?  If so, try installing the application again.  Then run version 1.0, which should uninstall the beta automatically.

2. If you're comfortable editing your registry settings, do the following:

    a. create a backup of your registry

    b. search for "UpgradeAdvisor" and delete all entries.  Then try running the v1.0 installer again.

Let me know if that helps.

Hi t_henriott ,

This DMI error does not appear to be an error with Vista Upgrade Advisor. This error indicates that some of your devices are using the same DMI resource.

The primary hardware device on a computer is the CPU. There are also several additional devices, such as video and sound. All devices have several ways to communicate with the CPU. One of these is DMI. Within DMI, it has a range of resources and no two devices can share the same DMI resource.

To find DMI errors, look in Device Manager:   Start Menu  --  Settings  --  Control Panel  --  System  --  Hardware Tab  --  Device Manager.

You will probably find an entry with a yellow exclamation or a red X. Fixing this kind of error is beyond what I can help you with because I help with Vista Upgrade Advisor issues rather than system issues. However, I have two general suggestions.

It may help to uninstall & re-install the offending driver. Before you do this, you want to have a copy of the driver so you can re-install it. Drivers for devices usually come with the device or with the computer. Also, Window recognizes many devices and has drivers for them.

If you recognize the devices and you know that you don't need one of them, you can disable it. Right-click on it & select disable.

Again, I believe this is not a problem with Vista Upgrade Advisor. If the above does not help, you may want to try other newsgroups related to Windows or check our support site which includes both free and paid assistance(http://support.microsoft.com/). If you bought your computer with Windows already installed on it, contact the maker of the computer (for example, call Gateway for help with a Gateway computer).

Ok the problem persist regardless I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it (last night), I've tried downloading it again and reinstalling it (same). Only to get the same message each time. I've checked for DMI errors as suggested earlier in thread without finding any. I've tried closing other programs that are running with same result. So does anybody have an idea as to what the problem is?

I would love it if vista upgrade advisor generated a text log of just where it crashed so at least i'd have an idea as to what was causing the problem.

Mike,

I'm not Bill, but I'm having the same issues with the Advisor running for longer than 15 minutes.  After I end the Advisor program, my computer will not shut down automatically.

When I search my temp directory, I find three VUA files:
VUA_Bucketizer_400SC.xml
VUA_Collector_400SC.xml
VUA_WinSat_400SC.xml

I've not installed or try to run any beta versions of the Advisor -- only the current release available for download from Microsoft.  I run WinXP SP2.  I've also uninstalled the Advisor, removed all references to "UpdateAdvisor" in the registry, and have reinstalled the Advisor with the same results.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.  To reply directly, remove the "nope" from my email address.

Hi Keith,

The file you're missing is VUA_QueryAppBlock_*.xml. This file is related to finding all the applications installed on your computer. Its absence indicates that there is a problem searching for installed applications.

Today, we posted a minor improvement to VUA which relates to this area. Please download the newer version.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx

After you uninstall & then install the newest version, let it run for up to 30 minutes. If it still fails, then please send me your VUA_Bucketizer_*.xml file.  Also let me know if you're using English XP or which language you're using.

Is there anything about your PC that you think might be unusual, such as if it's a Virtual PC?
Is there anything unusual about your connection to the internet, such as a password protected firewall?

5)
What spoken language are you running? In particular, have you installed a LIP (you'll know if you have)?

This is what I said in my email.

This is a year-old dual boot Toshiba Satellite laptop (Linux Xandros) with a single Device Manager "error" - my Cisco VPN virtual network adapter looks "broken" unless I am using it to VPN into my work.  I plan on removing the dual boot (installing Vista from the DVD and reformatting the drive), but want to make sure I have no hardware issues and that I can still Cisco VPN client to contact work.

What do I do when I have only one VUA file that does not indicate why it quits?

Hi Mike, thanks for tips.  None of those files that you mentioned are in Temp folder.  I did the uninstall and re-install, still the files are not there. I have even tried to run in diagnostic startup and still get the same errors.

There is nothing out of the ordinary about this PC and no LIP installed.  It is a brand new computer conected to a Linksys router.   I am using Trend Micro PC-cillin internet security 2007 as my firewall which does not require a password.  Windows firewall has been disabled.

Hi All,

When you get an error that the server is not available...

1)
Please try again later & a third time.

2)
Do you have a third party firewall? Many intivirus programs come with one & many services, such as Earthlink or AOL, include one that you may have installed. Try with it turned off.

Do you have a proxy server?  check your LAN settings
Internet Explorer - Tools - internet options - connections tab - lan settings
Take careful note of the current settings & copy any text. Then uncheck all the options, so nothing is selected. Then see if you still have internet access. If not, try "automatically detect settings". Be sure to put the settings back to the previous settings when finished.

3)
Download VUA again. Uninstall & install the fresh copy.

Also, same problem with shutdown -- must manually turn off computer.

FYI -- I have a dual boot system -- running Fedora in the other partition.

Also, and most important -- I cannot intall Vista Ultimate.  After entering product code -- machine justs reboots back to XP Pro.  Have installed Vista Ultimate on an identical machine (hardware) but with different software on it and only single boot.

I'm getting the same thing as most of the people here, when I checked my temp folder only the vua winsat, and vua collector files are in there. I uninstalled and reinstalled and checked device manager. I have no idea what the problem is, only that upgrading to Vista doesn't look likely.

I am getting a similar problem to those reported but my VUA exception occurs right after checking for updates and there are no VUAxxx files in my TEMP directory. The message:

"Process id=0x6f8(1784), Thread id=0x360(864)" varies in every number each time the error occurs.

I had run Vista Beta on this machine but on a seperarte hard disk and I am now back to running XP on the original hard disk. The two disks were never installed at the same time.

I had heard that to use two physical processors (this machine is dual Xeon) I needed Ultmate but I was hoping the advisor would tell me that and what software to remove before loading Vista.

I did have a "?" on one piece of hardware (Promise 376/378 Controller) but I disabled that. I have .Net 2.0

I will chime in on the exception errors. After successfully installing Vista Ultimate on my own computer, I wanted to check out what the Upgrade Advisor had to say about the hardware in my wife's computer. After installing I get an exception error (with different numbers) immediately after clicking the shortcut each and every time. De-installing, re-downloading, and re-installing a couple of times (even with reboots in between) make no difference whatsoever.

Also, thank you for taking the time to post your issues. We want to help and this gives us a chance to offer assistance and to make our product better. I hope we have some fixes for you soon, though I cannot make any guarantees.

Things To Try:

* Try again later

* Delete the temp vua* files. Download a fresh copy. Uninstall & re-install.

  (Temp files:  C:\Documents and Settings\ your alias \Local Settings\Temp)

* Proxy issues - LAN settings   (IE options, connection tab , LAN settings)

* Turn off antivirus/spyware & firewalls

* Device Manager problem entries.

Other things to consider

* Is there anything unusual about your machine (such as is it a Virtual PC)

* VUA only runs on 32-bit versions of XP & Vista; no 64-bit

   - It's OK if your hardware is 64-bit, so long as your edition of Windows is 32-bit

   - It doesn't run on Vista Enterprise (an edition of Ultimate only available to businesses. The

main difference is that this version has a few tweaks to make it easier for network

     administrators to manage remotely).

* You have probably noticed that I asked which VUA temp files you had & for some people

to send them to me. This info was for my use to diagnose problems. The things to try listed

above are the same regardless of which files you have.

* Please do not contact me directly unless asked to do so.

Regards, Mike

Run Windows Explorer. Click the "help" menu and click "about". Near the top, just below "Windows XP," you will see x64 if it's a 64-bit edition of Windows*.   -- It doesn't matter if your computer has a 64-bit processor. What matters is if it has a 64-bit edition of Windows.

* My coworkers and I don't have XP 64-bit running for me to verify this text. I have 64-bit Windows 2003 running and it shows "x64" just under "Windows Server 2003." I believe it's the same for XP.

Actually, some of us—through the iterative process of component upgrades—now have Vista-compatable hardware but have been holdouts from XP, enjoying the "stability" of Win2K.

If I can't get Vista for Business [Upgrade] to activate properly; in twenty-something days, I'll simply admit my $200 mistake, ditch Vista, reload Win2K, and tell my cautionary tale of woe.

Hi all,

Here is an update.

VUA Download:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx

1) Scan does not complete

We think we have found a solution for this. We hope to have it on our website next week. If this prevents VUA from scanning indefinitely, it should also prevent problems with not being able to shutdown.

(If you would like to try something sooner, you might consider installing IE7. I don't want to say that you need IE7. One of the many changes made by IE7 is the same change we are planning to make for VUA. Installing IE7 is something you could try as an experiment. If you do, please post back with your results.)

2) Connectivity problems - proxy problems

* Try setting the LAN Settings in Internet Explorer so nothing is selected, or to the "use a proxy" option. To specify a proxy, you will need to know the name or IP address of your proxy. VUA uses the settings from IE. If you are using another browser, this task needs to be done in IE.

* VUA does detect proxies. It does not detect advanced proxy settings such as a proxy which uses password authentication. Advanced proxy settings such as this are usually only found in business environments.

* If you have a local firewall on your PC, it's possible that it may be blocking VUA. Similarly, if you have a network firewall, it may be blocking VUA. These are issues with configuring your local/network firewall.

3) Error:  "encountered an error while scanning your system"

We do not yet have a fix for this.  We are still investigating.

4) General troubleshooting has only changed a little:

* Run VUA again later

* Turn off antivirus/spyware programs

* Download VUA again & install the new copy

* We no longer think conflicts shown in Device Manager are causing problems with VUA.

Hi All,

Another update.

I don't have answers for all your questions. The above is most of my information at this time. I have one more note if you're having trouble installing VUA.

VUA install problems may be due to problems with the subcomponents needed by VUA. You may want to try downloading these. Then you can install them separately and install VUA after.

Yet another note:

Here are suggestions posted by ITechLegend (not Microsoft). Perhaps they will help.

 - Turn off CD/DVD burning software

 - Run Disk Cleanup  (Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Cleanup)

 - Clean the temp directory:  C:\Documents and Settings\ your alias \Local Settings\Temp

 - ITechLegend refers to an app named "mscong". From searching on this name, it appears he is referring to disabling some apps that run automatically when you start the computer & then run in the background. I do NOT recommend or endorse the app "mscong". I am not familiar with it. I do not know if it is safe to use.

What you CAN do: look through your start menu to find apps that run in the background. Many/most of them will have entries in the start menu which allow you to disable that app.

Also (Advanced!) run services.msc to stop unneeded services  --  most apps that run in the background will show up here as a service.

Doing the last couple of suggestions from Mike worked.  Installing the XML services and reinstalling the .Net Framework along with running disk clean-up seemed to do the trick.

Thanks Mike, but I'll probrably still wait at least a year before using Vista.

Hi Malc P,

Not being able to run VUA does not mean that you cannot run Vista. VUA is a tool that helps determine if you can run Vista. It is not Vista itself.

You wrote that you have the same problem, but I'm not sure which problem.

* Keeps canning & can't shutdown
We expect to have a solution later this week. When it's ready, you'll need to download & install the latest version of VUA.

I guess that I will have to wait until the revised version comes out and then try again.

My system runs on Win XP Pro SP2. Which runs auto update so it is fully updated & has i.e. 7 installed.

I have tried with i.e. on & off. I have turned off my firewall but always the same error.

This appears to be an error in .NET. The next step in troubleshooting on your error is to remove all installed versions of .NET and then re-install .NET 2.0.

Hi Mike

Little bit concerned about what you are recommending. I have always used windows update to keep my system up to date.

It is fully up to date as stated by windows update. Checked to day 29.02.2007.

In Add Remove programs it shows ;

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1                                                  No size displayed

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903)                No size displayed.

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0                                                    Size 88.28MB

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0                                                    Size 57.72MB

I would assume that I would need to uninstall all of the above?

But why would I remove vers 3 to install vers 2.?

If I did would not windows update then want to upgrade to vers 3?

Reply:

Hi Delboy2006,

I should have been more specific. Billsey had an error which referenced the Common Language Runtime (CLR) which is the primary component for running .NET applications. Because his error referenced the CLR, we think his problem may be due to a problem with his install of .NET.

I'm sorry for not being more specific that this advice was for Billsey and others with a reference to the CLR in their error message.

Thank you for posting. That allowed me to make this correction.

Hello Itay and Delboy2006,

First, I'd like to clarify that you don't need 3 different versions of .Net on your system.  Installing .Net3.0 will suffice as it includes functionality of previous .Net Frameworks.

As for the problem you're encountering, the most likely cause is .Net.  It may be that a beta version of .Net was installed at some point or that the presence of all 3 versions on your system may be the cause of this error due to some unique system configuration.  The best way to troubleshoot this is to start with a fresh, clean install.  For that reason, it would be recommended that you uninstall all existing versions and try again.  A clean .Net 2.0 or .Net 3.0 install should resolve the issue.

Thanks,

Merzin

You wrote "I guess this bodes poorly...."

I agree it doesn't look good. I wouldn't be very pleased if failed on my PC. However, VUA is not Vista. If VUA worked, it would help you determine if your PC can run Vista. The fact that VUA fails doesn't mean Vista will fail. It just means that you don't have the help that VUA could have provided.

You may be able to contact the maker of your PC to find out if your model can run Vista.

This scanning error has been posted several times. We are researching it.

Hi Merzin

I`ve been away from the computer so I have only just read your latest update.

I uninstalled .net 1 without a problem.

Tried the same with .net 2 windows would not let me do it.The reason given was that it might affect other applications that are installed and referred me to http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q312/5/00.asp went there only to find that it was not available & gave other links so I gave up.

However I tried  Win Vista Advisor and it worked ok. So that problem now sorted.

Thanks for that.

What I cannot understand is, if you do not require both .net 2 & .net 3 installed then why didn`t Windows Update uninstall the older versions?

Hello

Seems I found the problem to my never-ending VUA scan. A program called SoundTaxi. I'm not sure if you are familiar with it. It allows you to rip purchased audio files to a new folder, into the format you choose, while at the same time removing the protection. After checking around the internet, I have noticed that others who had this program installed were also having the problem. After uninstalling SoundTaxi and rebooting, I ran the advisor again. It finished in about 5 minutes. I'm happy to say that except for a few minor software issues, which may be fixable, my system is ready for Vista. However, there are many programs similar to SoundTaxi that people may have installed on their systems that could be causing the same problem.

Reply:

Well it did work ok but it was not until I shut down & rebooted on another day did I find out all was not ok.

Windows would not boot up without an error. I attempted to recover from it but it just got worse.

I had to do a complete reinstall of windows so I was not a happy bunny.

Not only that during the reinstall of all the windows update. Windows update installed the same .net 1 2 etc as it had done before.

Which raises the question If you don`t need 1 or 2 as the latest version replaces them. Then why does windows update tells you need the update?

My advice is don`t uninstall any of the vers. of .net.

After all that hassle I have given up on windows vista advisor and also Vista.

If they can not get an advisor program to work ok then I do not have any faith in them being able to get Vista to work ok.

Attempting to run the Upgrade Advisor it appears to start the scan and comes back and displays "Your system could not be evaluated at this time."

Under system requirements, "We could not scan your hardware at this time.  Please uninstall Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and reinstall the latest version."

Attempted to uninstall and reinstall, with the same results.  All four VUA* files are being generated, VUA_WinSat* is 0KB.

Everything looks OK in Device Manager.  Anyone have any ideas?

Re-installed .NET framework using SP1 Windows Home Edition installation CD

I have saved the .NET 2.0 redistributable x86 package to a folder on C:\ drive

Windows XP can never find the msi installer to operate the repair function.

I am now getting the message that the version I am installing is incompatible with previous version after installing .NET 3.0, or rather Microsoft Automatic Updater did it.

I had an error message referring to two files in J#, one linked to Adobe reader when using the Microsoft Java tool.

I have also found that since re-installing the .NET framework needed for my radeon 7000 AGP that I am unable to run liveupdate from NIS 2008 and NIS now loads in tray and if I select task bar it just disappears.

I am running the latest Vista Upgrade Advisor (as of 2/28/2008) on a machine that I ran a previous version successfully (several months ago.)  The latest version fails with the "encountered an error...If the problem persists, uninstall... install latest..." message.

The most notable change I can recall making to this machine in that time is the installation of the Windows Home Server client software (I did that a few days ago.)  It's also possible I did not have .NET 3.0 on the machine previously.

Yeah, except it doesn't actually retain formatting, which is the point of using a code block in the first place, IMHO.

ANSI BSTR OLE variants and DAO on Vista SP 1

The value returned for the size of a string is incorrect from the OLE function SysStringByteLen when reading from a Jet database into a COleVariant using DAO with the project set to "Use Multi-Byte Character Set" (ANSI) on Vista SP 1.  This likely affects mostly legacy applications.

Below is a C++ code example.  Include this in a file as part of a C++ console application with the project set to "Use Multi-Byte Character Set".  The results show SysStringByteLen being reported 1 byte larger than it really is on Vista SP 1 (and not on non SP 1 Vista).  This was a problem with earlier versions of Windows XP SP 3 also, but it has been resolved for the latest release.

// DaoPlay.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application.
//

// Setting these higher may make the program not run on older OS's,
// but does not affect the SysStringByteLen in XPSP3RC1 problem.
#define WINVER 0x0400         // Change this to the appropriate value to target other versions of Windows.
#define _WIN32_WINNT  0x0400  // Change this to the appropriate value to target other versions of Windows.
#define _WIN32_WINDOWS 0x0400 // Change this to the appropriate value to target Windows Me or later.
#define _WIN32_IE 0x0500      // Change this to the appropriate value to target other versions of IE.

#include <stdio.h>
#include <tchar.h>
#include <iostream>
#include <conio.h>
#include <ctype.h>
#define _ATL_CSTRING_EXPLICIT_CONSTRUCTORS      // some CString constructors will be explicit

#ifndef VC_EXTRALEAN
#define VC_EXTRALEAN          // Exclude rarely-used stuff from Windows headers
