Is it possible to prevent SP13 from creating default.aspx pages in every single subsite, because these pages don't exist on my current websites in SP07/SP10?

Is it possible to prevent SP13 from creating default.aspx pages in every single subsite, because these pages don't exist on my current websites in SP07/SP10?

I currently end up with a problem when migrating to SP13.
I am currently migrating websites from SP07/SP10 to SP13.

Issue:
The problems is when migrating to SP13, SP13 create default.aspx pages in every single subsite,
which can't be deleted unless you assign a different page from parent of child directory.

Questions:
1. Is it possible to prevent SP13 from creating default.aspx pages in every single subsite, because these pages don't exist on my current websites in SP07/SP10. I would like to migrate as is. These default.aspx pages are actually empty pages, except they're containing a page layout and some links. Please note that the amount of webpages will double after migration due to these default.aspx pages.

2. What options do I have here and how does this impact SEO?

Sofar I thought about 2 options I have:

1. Assigning different parent/child pages in every single subsite where SP13 creates default.aspx pages per subsites in order to finally delete default.aspx per subsite.

2. Keeping default.aspx pages in every single subsite and put a 301 redirect to the appropriate destination. (Might be tricky for visitors), unless you prevent search engines from indexing these pages using robots.txt but that might be a big job for SEO.

Hope to hear other technical options I might have and please provide me the feedback on impact on SEO.

Hope to year from you soon!

How are you migrating? That shouldn't happen in a database upgrade scenario.

Hi Alex, Thank you for your reply.

We are currently using ShareGate to migrate websites from http to https.
We also use site collections to keep track of all sites. We have a team that actually do the migration. For further question please specify them so I can provide the right details.

In addition the focus is "as is" migration with small improvements like the https taken into account.
We can extract all page URL's before migration and URL's after migration and see the SEO action to implement 301 redirects after migration.

Hope I provided you the information you'll need.

Hi Alex,

In addition:
Not every subsite contains a default.aspx page in our current situation (SP07/SP10).

After migration to SP13:

Eg: domainname.com/cars/mercedes/default.aspx

In the location above a default.asp will be genereated under: domainname.com/cars/ (default.aspx withing directory cars). This will be done for all subsites (folders).

I think this situation is not wanted, because this will triple/quadriple the amount of default.aspx pages that don't make sense.
Preferable just want to have the setup of directories and pages available in SP13.

QUESTION:
Should we change the way of how to migrate?
Could you describe the way how to perform it?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

DHCP client hostname (Option 12) encoding

Hello,

Recently I have been trying to save list of hostnames from captured DHCP packets. I have encountered problem, when DHCP client is saving unknown format of hostname. It happens, when account have different character set than allowed in RFC 1035 (RFC is mentioned in DHCP standard RFC 2132 ). For example invalid hostname is "Lukáš-PC".

Undefined characters are saved in packets as these unsigned char values:

á = 160 š = 231

I haven't found any relation between these values and known encodings.

So is there any way to convert values back to original ?

Thank you,

Configure RDWeb and MFA with soft token

Hi

We are trying to secure RD Web site with Azure MFA on Windows 2012 R2. We are successfully able to configure it with Phone, text or call option.

How can I configure it with soft token? If user is configured with token on MFA, RD Web gets access denied.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks,

ADFS claim rules question : Confused

Hi All,

I'm configuring SSO between a SaaS application and my organization via ADFS.

In the application configuration page, i have to put an SSO identity for each user that will use SSO.

Example : For the user "Samir FARHAT", i type s.farhat@org.com

The part confusing me now, is that the application documentation says that :

----------------------

Use field SSO identity to identify the user against the Identity Provider. Technically, the content of the field
must match the value of "urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:1.1:nameidformat:unspecified" NameID in the
SAML response

----------------------------------------

Now, what should i to to do on the ADFS part ?

AFIAK, i have to configure a 'Transformation rule' on the Claim rule to meet the "urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:1.1:nameidformat:unspecified" ?

But how, can someone help or clarify me it ?

No need for deactivation, after you've formatted call MS activation support and go for activation (on same server) using the installation  ID.

Microsoft to finalize Windows 10 this week

http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/6/8899919/microsoft-windows-10-rtm

Once Microsoft has finalized Windows 10 this week the company will continue to work on bug fixes ready for the July 29th release date. Windows 10 testers will get a copy of the final version first, and the company will be rolling out the OS to the public in waves starting on July 29th.

Really ?

A direct quote from the Windows blog you linked to in your original post:

"Starting on July 29, we will start rolling out Windows 10 to our Windows

slowly scaling up after July 29th. Each day of the roll-out, we will

TAGS in Windows 10

Hello! Can say that I'm Windows power user and I always has wondered is there a possibility to add option for taging documents and folders in Windows 10. I do not mean colour tags like in OS X Yosemite (that's stupid), i mean word-tags. I thing a "General" section in "Properties" or new section named "Tags" again in "Properties" will be suitable place for this feature. I have to say that, in my opinion, will be really useful option, especially for business-users, who are working with big databases. Also tags will be really helpful for sorting photos by a home-users.

Please, think about my concept. I hope that I will have opportunity to use tags in final version of Windows 10.

Best regards, PenDotInk, current user of Windows 7 x64.

P.s. Little "Paint"-touched photo, showing how I imagine my idea: http://1drv.ms/1yTCgBd

IIRC Windows XP had such a facility that would work for arbitrary
files by storing information in NTFS alternate streams, however that's
not particularly useful as the information is lost when the file is
moved to a file system that doesn't have an equivalent facility.

Most media files (jpg for instance) already have meta data. Select a
JPG, display it's properties and use the Details tab - you should be
able to enter your own text in the Comments field. The big problem
with such facilities are the different "standards" for them :(

Yeah, Dave, I found that there is an option to add tags in Windows 7 and Windows 8/.1 too, but what really annoys me is that the feature works with only few file extensions. Folders are totally forgotten. All I asking for is more universality in new Windows 10. :/

As I pointed out, in older OS's MS did provide such a facility, but it
had severe limitations making it not that useful in practice.

Given that experience, and the fact that there's nowhere to store such
metadata in many file formats, I can't see how MS can achieve it.

They need to keep a tags database file that is sync'd to a cloud account (they are all but forcing everyone to have skydrive accounts at this point and 10 will probably be even more obnoxious about this). The local database can follow files around on the local system and then it can be optionally downloaded onto other systems to retrieve tags.

That is definitely already there.  However, I think you should also look at activating the File Explorer Details pane (mutually exclusive with the Preview pane unfortunately).   Win-E, Alt-V D.   Other than Pictures one good example that I have is looking at your IE Favorites that way.

Hi, I am newbie to technet tho not M$, been using since '98.

I fully support PenDotInk's suggest for tags, *somehow*.

I like the database tagging model, could create wiki functionality..

~ maybe like XYplorer does now.  http://www.xyplorer.com/tour.php?page=tags

So yr computer file system itself can become a wiki... killer feature.

M$ would just have to solve tags breaking, upon moving the tagged files.

Your Path as Windows 10 Insider

From what I have read as an "Insider" you will be upgrade to Windows 10 when released later this month.  However, suprise, they say your locked in as a insider and have to take the future developement  builds after the release date as they continue to develop for Windows 10"  The article also states you can revoke that just by loading back in your licensed version of  Windows 7, upgrade to Windows 10 outside the windows insider path and then you won't be locked into insider program for life.   Ayone else hearing this?

It's been aweful buggy for me to contiune on the insider path of updates after release.

Gabriel Aul tried to clarify the issue and he had to do it 3 times. It's still unclear to some.

To answer your question :
If you installed Insider Preview ( aka Win 10 Technical Preview ) over a qualifying Windows such as Win 7 or Win 8.1, you are entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 10 RTM.
You do NOT have to roll back to your original operating system which is Win 7 in your case. You are good to go. You will get the free upgrade to Win 10 RTM through Windows Update.

However, you have a choice to stay with the Insider Preview and continue to receive new builds. In this case, you just do nothing.
excerpt : Source
"I want to continue as a Windows Insider!" If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You're already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you'll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you'll have received a new one. Since we're continuing the Windows Insider Program you'll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we'll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well.

Unfortunately these details (how upgrades with hardware embedded product key are handled, leave alone the special situation you describe) are not released to the public yet and may also depend from the OEM (manufacturer of the machine) who may not always be interested to support a new OS on older machines.

Downloaded Windows 10 Technical Preview Enterprise Edition (64 bit) image file from:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview.

Download time < 15 minutes. File size 3.888GB.

Download was smooth and apparently error free.

Transfer of OS to USB Memory Card

Rufus 1.4.10 application program was used to create a bootable USB Memory Card and to install the OS on this card. (http://rufus.akeo.ie/). The process was easy and was error free.

Install Windows 10 on the Dell 11 Pro.

A Dell factory backup was done to a bootable USB memory card. (Dell does not ship the Venue with any OS or other software on external media).

The Rufus generated USB Memory Card was inserted into the Venue's USB 3.0 port.

Windows Explorer was used to display the USB files and to select and execute "Setup".

The Windows 10 installation asks if one wishes to keep the existing application programs, drivers and other current files. The recommended answer is YES. This was an unusual experience for me because the typical requirement is to do a clean install from a bootable device that is read on computer power up. It was very nice to be able to preserve the current application programs and drivers and to do the installation from "inside of" the old OS.

The installation process was quick, there were no error messages or any obvious problems.

There was no requirement for user responses during the process.

The first tasks on initial start-up of the OS are to check for updates and to provide logon information.

The update requirement depends on an operational connection to the Internet. In our case, the connection is by WiFi and there would normally by no way to initiate this without having been logged on to a running version of the OS. It is a typical "cart before the horse" problem. Fortunately, it is possible to defer this step which is what we did.

The next problem is creating the logon. Dell's default on display intensity is dimmer than is desirable and, at least on this tablet, it is difficult to see the contents of some of the logon fields. You cannot change the display intensity until after a successful logon. The "CAPTCHA" step is especially difficult and annoying. The dim display makes it tough to recognize the alphanumeric characters which may be on angles, overlapping, indistinct and of varying intensity. One has to guess about some of the characters, to change to different CAPTCHA selections and to repeatedly attempt a logon. My recommendation is not to use CAPTCHA in any part of the software.

Microsoft encourages the use of a "Microsoft system wide" user name and password.  There are some advantages to this, but, as others have pointed out, it has some risks.

Touch screen virtual keyboards are infamous for problems with accidental selections of adjacent keys and unintended character repetitions. Fortunately, the Venue 11 has a large sized virtual keyboard and there is less chance of key selection errors than is true with the small sized displays. The Venue does has problems with the unintended character repetitions. All of this causes difficulties with initial password setups in which the entered data are hidden with stars or other characters and one also usually has to enter the new password twice. A few software developers have started offering users a check box option for display of the entered password information. This is really helpful for reducing the number of times that one might need to enter a new password and then repeat it for confirmation.

Initial Experience with Windows 10

There have been no known problems with missing or incompatible drivers. I don't know if any drivers were updated between 8.1 and 10 except that there was a somewhat lengthy automatic install of a new driver for the cellular modem. This device and its software have not been evaluated as yet. I do not know if the software enables regular cellular voice operations. It is unlikely that it enables the automatic transfer of voice communications between WiFi and Cellular networks, as is available from some vendors.

Access to the Control Panel, Command Prompt and other administrative functions is now possible via the "Start" icon display once one realizes that you need to scroll the display fully downward and to the right in order to see the "administrative" icons.

In spite of the relatively large Dell Venue display (10.8 inches), there are still many fields that are small and/or are too close together to be reliably selected by finger touch. Some of these fields cannot be selected at all by finger touch. The problem can be reduced by increasing character and display sizes and by the use of an Active Stylus. Use of a mouse plugged into the USB port is a temporary solution if one doesn't have a stylus.

There have been many instances of failures to respond to icon selections by repeated finger presses. The reason for this behavior is unknown. The problem can be temporarily cleared by a soft restart.

In some fields, autofill correctly displays a list of choices, but the application program crashes with an unknown error message if you touch select one of the choices.

There is a hardware "Windows button icon" that is located on the front rim of the computer, halfway between the right and left sides of the unit. This is a very poor location because it is easy to accidentally press the button while holding the computer in one's hand. The button should be recessed and should be located on a side of the computer.

There should be a mechanical button to increase or decrease screen intensity. There should be a user selectable option to control ambient light regulated screen intensity.

This isn't necessarily a Windows 10 issue, but there has been a recent marked increase in advertisements that are added to the results of Google and Yahoo searches, e-mail traffic and other Internet transactions. The latest twist is that unless one accepts an advertisement's initial suggestion - usually by clicking on a YES or OK icon - then the display is locked and you cannot close it short of ending the task or doing a soft reset. There is no choice to Cancel. Selecting the X close icon or close on a drop down box doesn't close the advertising Window display.

SQL server 2014 - Memory optimized tables not releasing memory after committing transaction and server restart

I am new to Memory optimized tables. I have gone through the documentation available here about Garbage collection:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn643768.aspx

The article states in the end:

After a user transaction commits, it identifies all queued items associated with the scheduler it ran on and then releases the memory.

When I run a long transaction which inserts about 1.5 GB of data the SQL server has the memory occupied which is expected.

But I cannot find a way to reclaim/release this memory. Even after I restart the SQL service, it re-occupies the same amount of memory as before.

I want to know whether it is normal or am I doing something wrong here?

Reply:

But I cannot find a way to reclaim/release this memory.

But that's the Intention of in-memory technology, to keep the data the whole time in memory for highest Performance, even after server restart.

To add a tiny bit: When you start SQL Server, SQL Server will read the data from disk into memory for all in-memory table. It will also build the indexes (indexes on in-memory aren't stored on disk, the indexes are built at start-up). So this is indeed the expected behaviour.

Reply:
The memory is occupied by the table is the worse issue even after delete all the data from table and delete the table as well still Ram is full and not releasing the memory.

------------------------------------
Reply:
SQL Server does not release memory to the OS unless memory pressure. This is regardless of whether you are using in-memory tables. So the question is whether this memory is available for SQL Server for other purposes than this in-memory table or somehow "locked" by the table even though you have deleted the rows. A simple way to test would after deletion to significantly reduce the "max server memory" option in SQL Server and see if the memory is reduced.

Possible bug detected - Workflows with "hardcoded" email recipient fails if recipient is removed from gateway

Scenario: A workflow is configured to do some approval and then notify 2 specifik users that the workflow has been run. Then one of the users are removed from the FIM portalen and thus also from the workflow. Now when the workflow runs, it fails with the message;

WorkflowInstance 'c55n969e-72ac-4a0f-ad39-a35648d56afa' could not resolve mail message in activity 'authenticationGateActivity6'. Mail was not sent.

Has any one else seen this?

Reply:

Not sure how do you see this is a bug, you configured a recipient in the workflow and than deleted that user and now the workflow is not working anymore?

Or are you unable to delete this user from the workflow is that what you mean with a bug?

Is it possible to remove the reference to the user through the advanced menu ?

The user is actually removed from the workflow (at least from the gui)

Well, the workflow should not fail imo, just generate an error message and then continiue.

Reply:
Did you check the XOML on the workflow itself, maybe there is a reference still set but while viewing through the GUI is could not be resolved.

Go to "Advanced view" --> Extended attributes --> XOML. Copy the XOML to notepad to read is more easily and check if there is still a reference or GUID to the deleted user.

Reply:
Yes, well i had to just remove the part with the email to make the workflows run again... Users were complaining :O

Still think it's a bug. Especially since the Notify WF still had a user it could send an email to. The same thing does not happen if one of the DisplayedOwners is removed from a Group.

Reply:
Ok I understand now what you mean and yes it seems as a bug that references to the deleted user are not correctly removed within the system.

For what it's worth I think there is a bug that needs to be logged.  IMO the bug is that the notification activity fails with a bad recipient.  It should only fail if it cannot deliver the mail.  If three recipients are configured and two are valid it should succeed.  Raise a premier incident and ask for this issue and ask for a bug to be raised.

IMO the lack of clean-up isn't a bug, but is an issue for operations folk.  The same is true of criteria filters.  If you dereference a set or group in a group or set criteria and delete the referenced resource the filter of the resource that dereferences isn't cleaned up.  Luckily the set computation code handles such an eventuality accordingly, i.e. if the operator is AND you get null; if it's OR you still get the rest of the result set.  This has been a headache for me with no easy fix.

Was this ever fixed? I just had this issue in FIM 2010 R2 4.1.3599.0

In the Normal view I have 1 email address and 11 references to a person/user object

In the advanced XOML view I have 1 email address (same as normal view) and 12 GUID's as references to a person/user object.

If any other information is needed please to not hesitate to ask,

Any Idea how should I manage this?

Thanks in Adavce

Reply:

IE is a common one, especially if you have installed 3rd party add-ons and activex controls, try to find out if any specific sites are causing it to crash.

outlook can be several things:

  • using cached mode
  • using OST and PST files and not excluding them from AV scanning
  • email archiving during the day
  • search indexing - this is a killer in most environments
  • 3rd party add-ons

without looking at the dumps it's not easy to guess what's going on with the crashes. suggest you fully patch the servers OS and Office components

have the latest RDP v8.1 client installed for all the clients

------------------------------------
Reply:

First of all thank you for the replay.

Second, We do not use any cache mode or pst /ost. only online exchange.

We do not use any 3rd extentions on outlook.

I have already patched the servers and have the latest RDP 8.1 client.

What do you mean archiving ?

What do you mean by Search index ? Where can I find it ? how can I disable it?

Anyway, it does not explain the fact that the errors has started at the same date ( 13/05/2015 ) on all of the servers...Till that date everything worked like a charm!

It looks like some update causes this beheviour but I have uninstalled all the related updates installed that day.

Again, it seems that it has nothing to do with the outlook itself because the same error occurs on IE as well.

I Guess it has something with the OS but Can't find it :-(

Any other Ideas?

Thanks again

in the control panel you should have an icon for indexing. not sure how it works if you're using outlook online though

http://blogs.technet.com/b/outlooking/archive/2014/04/28/understanding-search-scopes-in-microsoft-outlook.aspx

you may need to switch to cache mode if the server is unable to keep up with online mode

Lync 2011 for Mac launch script help.

We've got a big problem in our company with Mac users turning their Lync off, despite the policy being to keep it running.  I want to make a Dell Kace script to launch it, and I have one that mostly works, but not the same as clicking the icon.  If a user clicks the icon it launches Lync and logs them in, no problem, if I launch it via the script it comes up to the login window demanding a password instead of just launching.  I can't seem to find any information on command line options for Lync 2011, does anyone have any suggestions?  The script is below.

#!/bin/bash  sudo -u `who | grep console | awk '{print $1}'` open /Applications/Microsoft\ Lync.app  exit  exit

UAC breaks modern applications

UAC set to "Do not dim my desktop" (one notch below default) causes all Modern applications to stop responding after those applications attempt to show a UAC dialog under some conditions.

1. Set UAC to "Do not dim my desktop"
2. Using the modern Settings app, browse to Update and Security > Activation
3. Click the "Change product key" button

In this scenario the settings app will stop working entirely... Another example:

1. Set UAC to "Do not dim my desktop"
2. Using Microsoft Edge, download a registry file (e.g. From popular tutorials: Tenforums.com - This PC 'Folders' - Add or Remove in Windows 10)
3. Click the Run button in the Edge browser when the download completes.

In this scenario the browser will stop working entirely.

You have to terminate the consent.exe process to regain control of the modern application... It's a very annoying bug that has remained in the insider builds for quite a while and needs to be fixed!

Thanks,

dmex

Well dmex,

Thanks for your sharing.

I can confirm that the Settings Change Product Key part would be freezed if UAC is set to "Do not dim my desktop". On both build 10159 and 10162. The other UAC options seems to work as expected.

For the Microsoft Edge part, it would also be freezed as described, the workaround is to end the task "Consent UI for administrative applications" under Task Manager.

Hi Michael,

I previously submitted feedback using the Windows Feedback Tool however considering the length of time this bug has remained in the Insider previews I figure it was ignored.

Thanks, hopefully the issue is fixed before RTM :)

You are not going to be releasing this soon

You are not going to be releasing this soon

Hi, I've been through most windows beta releases since the beta release of chicago on 24 floppy disks but I simply don't think this is anyway near ready for release. Every cycle is a strain to install. Maybe if I was an Intel man it would be ok. You can't even get a clean install to work correctly on 160. Yes its a complicated piece of software, but please don't inflict this on the world till your confident it'll work on 95% percent of systems and that problems are identified before installation rather than during the first release.

You're probably looking at October/November in a realistic timeframe

Reply:

Hello,

I understand that some people are having issues with installs, but they don't give any specific information on what error messages they are getting, or even what the exact issue might be. Please understand that is a technical preview, I have to wonder how much is the OS, and how much is the user. I have installed the previews on AMD and Intel machines with traditional disk and SSD's on 3 different motherboards Gigabyte,MSI and ASUS with AMD & intel video and also via onboard for both and I have yet to have any major problems with the software. The only issue I have is that with each update as fast as my machine is, It still can take 45 to 1.5 hrs for it to install and that is with a 100mb cable pipe. The current release actually surprised me as it was downloaded and installed in 30mins, which is still way to long, but at least it's well under the time it usually takes.

I don't mean to offend, but it just really makes me laugh to see people who brag about their experience with computers or how smart they are, but yet they cannot give proper information in order to get a proper answer.

Maybe there isn't a problem other than the persons unreal expectations. There are so many things that causes computers to act up that without proper lnformation it is impossible to know what could cause the issue.

This is not directed toward you, but just a general observation.

Thanks

Yawanathan

There are already plenty of issues regarding installation problems on the forums. Fell free to read them. I was waiting to identify the issue before adding to the mess.

This particular issue has been identified as a problem upgrading or  installing this on a Kingston SSD model number SV300S37A240G. Its possible a fault developed on this drive but I've just copied 185 Gigabytes of data to it so it must be a strange problem possibly EFI related. My Samsung 840 EVO has problems upgrading from 130 to 160 , but that is a more complicated issue because of installed software.

I've now installed the same  pro 160 version from the same media (DVD) on a Samsung 840 and it's working fine. But it would not on the Kingston. The boot error was a complaint about winload and losing connection to the SSD. The motherboard is a ASUS Crosshair Formula Z with 16 Gig and a FX8350 installed running the latest BIOS. The previous BIOS had the same problem.

All this strikes me as too many issues from something supposedly near final release. Now that I have it running I am impressed by 160. I just would've liked an easier path to get here.  I'm not even going to try to upgrade the  Evo running 130 again. Do you think downloading the files on every attempt is a good idea, Why don't I get the chance to try again without the download. This would give me a chance to remove or disable offending software or hardware and attempt it again

Windows 10 Insider Program - Enterprise Testing after RTM

I haven't seen anything in regards to testing the Enterprise edition once it's released. I am testing the Enterprise edition on my own without any enterprise keys, software assurance, etc.. Will testers of the Enterprise edition also get the RTM build and continue to get updates as long as it's tied to a MSA under the same terms as the Professional testers have?

So here I can't say if it will stil keep working with the registered Microsoft Account.

The information is for reference, at least we could download the Enterprise at that time, Volume licensing customers only.

Alt-F4 >> "Switch user" not working in some cases.

When I'm logged on to an account with no password, Alt-F4 >> "Switch user" accomplishes nothing. It clears the screen and then comes back where I was when I did the Alt-F4.

If I'm logged on to an account with a password, it works.  It takes me to the initial date and time screen from where I get the logon screen with a mouse click.

R2 SP1 Driver bloat issue

Wanted to start a discussion thread on this bug in the recently released Service Pack 1 for SCCM 2012 R2.

During the driver import, from what I can see, each .inf in a given driver folder results in SCCM creating a separate driver store.  Each store containing the full content of files where the .inf file lives.  For example, if a driver package that is 100 MB and has 3 .inf files (all in the same directory) this will result in 3 driver stores each at 100 MB, and of course basic math says what should be 100MB driver store is now a 300 MB driver store.

Given most drivers set are anywhere from 500MB to 1GB+, this can result in a massive driver package.  The import process can take hours and you will notice significant slow down in your Task Sequences when it has to download say 10GB driver package versus 1GB.

One idea I am getting ready to test is creating a standard "Package" for the drivers, and running a DISM command to inject them and leave the drivers (for now) out of the driver store/driver package.

The command will look something like this:

X:\WIndows\System32\Dism.exe /image:C:\ /Add-Driver /Driver:(PATH) /recurse

About to run through a test on this.  Certainly not ideal but could be viable workaround while we wait for a hotfix.

Would love to get feedback from others and how they are looking to workaround this OR if you upgraded to SP1 and do not suffer from this issue.

Thanks!

Hi sir,

Thanks for your feedback! I tried to reproduce this issue on my side, but failed. Do you try to check your SQL items on the manage.windowsazure.com portal? You also could try to contact the Azure support for more details:

Hi Will,

Thanks for getting back to me. I've tried raising the issue with support but they dismissed it as they said that the preview portal is only supported in the forums.

I can see all of my items in the regular portal (2 servers and 3 databases) but in the new portal I can now only see 1 of the databases and the "server" link on that has "unavailable" written on it.

Matthew

Adding external users to distribution groups in Exchange Online

Currently we have thousands of email aliases that we run on a Postfix server. The aliases can contain both internal and external addresses, and there's a web interface where end-users can modify aliases they own.

I'd like to move these into Exchange Online distribution groups. To do so I'll need to add all of the external email addresses as Mail Contacts. That's fine, but the issue is that the end-user has no ability to add new mail contacts. Every time a user wants to add a new external address to an alias, an administrator--probably me--will need to create a new mail contact.

I was thinking we could develop a web app that allows users to enter an address and have it added as a Mail Contact in Exchange Online, but that seems like a hack. How are other organizations handling this need?

using powershell Invoke-command to execute DOS command on remote machine

Hi,

We have noticed on issue while executing the dos command on the remote machine using invoke-command powershell commandlet.

While trying to execute the DOS command on remote machines and if the count of remote machines is more than and equal to 3, then randomly for one machine the response is not received. This issue is noticed in invoke-command commandlet while running from powershell console as well as from c# program leveraging system.management.automation.powershell object.

Please let us know if this some know issue or I am missing some configuration.

Thanks,

Rahul

In general it will not be the problem running a DOS command over a remote connection via PowerShell, it will be with a high probability the remote connection itself. Bad to say, there are lot reasons that a connection does not work.

There three basic categories for failure:

  • Inhibit the connection where PowerShell is innocent are Firewalls and AntiVirus products
  • The configuration on the WinRM (Windows Remote Management) on local and remote client site
  • And often the permissions (don't have the permissions on a remote Server)

To localitze your problem, start with checking the firewall. Then review your WinRM configurations. Test the connections: First try to connect the local machine to the local machine. When this works the problem is 100% up to the remote site. When you assume that the configuration is good, concentrate on the permission. Being an administrator on both sides is helpful to identify the problem.

I hope that recipe is helpful for you - let me know if you solved your problem.

Thanks for the information provided…

Actually when we tried for more than 2 remote machines e.g. 3, randomly for one (and exactly one) the response is not received. So if try again, not necessary that the response from the same machine will be missing, response from one among the 3 will be missing. And again, if I individually try for the machine (whose response was missing while running in group), then the response is received. So there is no issue in reaching or accessing it. This is what surprising me…

By default in WSMAN only 5 concurrent remote sessions are allowed. With Invoke-Command a temporary session is opened. I know that when a session is removed the resources are not immediately freed (when disconnected never!). Maybe that can be a starter to solve for your problems. As test serialize your invoked commands with gaps (15 secs - Start-Sleep -s 15) between.

A good link regarding sessions is: Administrator's Guide to Powershell Remoting . Look at the chapter "Temporary Sessions"

Let me know if that helps.

i suggest you use windows defender, rather than any 3rd party anti-virus for windows 10 technical preview.

AVG Internet Security is working in windows 10, but i don't think all it's feature is working. you should wait for 3rd party anti-virus to support windows 10 before using them on windows 10.

Don't always rely on past history.  Although they wouldn't be my first choice, both Trend Micro and McAfee have improved significantly.  I don't believe you can point me to any recent examples of those  two causing BSOD.

Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender used to be one of the best AVs out there but now they consistently rank near the bottom for detection rates in every independent test I have seen.  Next year, who knows....  My point being, don't assume that what was bad (or good) last year remains the same this year.

Microsoft has ALWAYS been a joke. Defender and MsSE both.  ESET has always won it's VB100 for the most part Kaspersky has been right up there with them.

My question is just why exactly Microsoft is more or less forcing us to rely on garbage AV software ?

All the pre-Beta and Beta versions of Win 7 and Win 8 had zero compatibility issues with the major AV's.  And, while windows 7 was still in the "Longhorn" phase of development, it worked quite well with most of the quality AV's. Even with the garbage ones like McAfee and Norton / Symantec. As a matter of fact Microsoft went as far as to provide a listing of, and hotlinks to, AV's that were compatible.

Why, would anyone with half a clue, NOT want to protect their rig as best as possible ? Even if they are Beta testing an OS ?

I'm trying to get something to work also. Avast didn't work. Windows Defender is a joke. It doesn't work very well, it's constantly giving error messages in the security center and is 90% of the reason why my updates on Tech Preview are failing so often. Now it keeps saying that to check the anitivirus or spyware (or both) and when I check the program is already running. Usually it just gives one error or the other (but sometimes both). It will not update correctly to the new definitions and keep getting server errors. Now it won't scan past about 40% and there is a constant alert in security center to turn it on. Anyway, just getting sick of the TP now. I'm spending all my time trouble shooting and reinstalling etc that I don't think I've even had a chance to really use almost any of it. I finally fixed the file explorer crashing/hanging nightmare and now I can't get the defender to work right. BTW...anyone had any luck getting Acronis True Image to install on it? I really want a good backup program, I'm reinstalling almost 2-3 times a week now because of this thing. I bought True Image 2015 before I installed the TP but have not been able to get it to install at all. Same with a lot of my programs, some that worked just before some recent updates. That and I don't think I've had a clean SFC ever on it and DISM wont run the restorehealth option (says cant get sources) and cant install PE/ADK. I'm about ready to delete this thing soon, it's way more trouble than it's worth.

I was with Win 10 TP since day one ( build 9841). I am now on build 10049, and I never use a 3rd party AV.

All I have is Malwarebytes free edition  as a "on demand " protection with Windows Defender as "real time " protection.  I have no issue with Security.

Of all the thread in these TechNet forums, there isn't a thread complaining about being infected.

I am sure you have your reason why you want a 3rd party AV. I just don't think it is necessary.

P.S. This thread is old. Should have started a new thread for yourself.

ActiveSync + Intune + Blackberry 10 OS = What?

What policies actually work if I am using Office 365, Intune, and adding an account on a Blackberry 10 device?

I saw this article: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB33619 which lists what ActiveSync policies and features work on BB10 devices.

I tried it myself using a policy through Intune that applies to ActiveSync only devices.  As far as I can see, it has not enforced any of the password policies on the device that were applied.

Has anyone successfully used Intune and ActiveSync to manage Blackberry 10 devices?  If so, can anyone offer any tips or what I should expect.

Reply:

Very few. Intone itself does not use ActiveSync to manage devices as ActiveSync is a very limited compared to real MDM which is what Intune uses/is. There is an ActiveSync connector that should allow you to manage ActiveSync via Intone, but as mentioned, its limited at best to what the ActiveSync implementation on the device itself supports. Also, given the very small number of folks still using BlackBerry, you may not find a whole lot folks even attempting to do this.

Here's the TechNet docs on the ActiveSync connector: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/dn646988.aspx

RDS 2012 External Web Connect to a remote PC tab Error

ADFS 3.0 Windows Authentication with external IP

Hi.

I have recently upgraded from CRM 2011 + ADFS 2.0 to CRM 2015 + ADFS 3.0.

I have managed to get it working, but there are some issues.

My adfs server: adfs.domain.com is both used externally and internally. The server-name is server.domain.local but has a certificate for *.domain.com and is set up to use adfs.domain.com

This adfs-server is than exposed to the internet threw Big-IP so that is get a different ip extenally.

So ADFS ip's:

Internally: 1.1.1.1

External: 2.2.2.2

I then added a DNS record that adfs.domain.com should go to ip 2.2.2.2 (external), and externally work fine (get the logon form), but then internally does not work.

Error: Requested Authentication Method is not supported on the STS.

If I override in host file on a internal client that adfs should go to 1.1.1.1 it works internally.

The issue on hand is that my hosting partner is very reluctant to add the 1.1.1.1 DNS/A-record on the intranet.

And this worked with ADFS 2.0, ie using the extenal ip to resolve via the ADFS  threw the external address with windows authentication (wauth=urn%3afederation%3aauthentication%3awindows), but this dosen't seem to work as "smooth" in ADFS 3.0.

And tips?

How can I send a LDAP attribute as a custom attribute with an ADFS custom claim rule?

I am
federating with a SaaS provider who's non-ADFS system expects to see the userid
as an attribute named "UID". The type must be persistent. I've been
working a custom rule to do this. Here's what I have right now:<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

c:[Type ==
Issuer == "AD AUTHORITY"]

 => issue(store = "Active Directory", types =
("UID"), query = ";sAMAccountName;{0}", param = c.Value,
ValueType = c.ValueType, Properties["
http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2005/05/identity/claimproperties/format"]
= "urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:2.0:nameid-format:persistent");

But ADFS says "invalid claim rule" when I try to save that.  It says that there is a syntax error: unexpected VALUE_TYPE, expecting one of the following: PARAM.

Has anyone worked on a similar situation?  Any tips on how to accomplish this?<o:p></o:p>

Remote Desktop Services / Unable to connect to the server by using Windows Powershell Remoting

Hello everyone,

i have a Linux Samba 3 Domain (NT-Domain) running. Since some days we got a extra server for Remote Desktop.

So on this new server we installed Windows Server 2012R2 with the Remote Desktop Services Role.

Unfortunately i always get the error message "Unable to connect to the server by using Windows Powershell Remoting"

What i tried already is:

- disabling ipv6 on nic
- Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Shell\MaxMemoryPerShellMB 1000
- Windows Firewall disabled
- tried to install the RDS Role as administrator (left click on server manager run as ....)
- netsh winhttp reset proxy
-Enable-PSRemoting -force
- checked server time

All this didnt help me. In the end i tried another option. A testlab with only the RD Server and another Win2012R2 server as AD solved my problem.

With this i can say its a problem with my Samba 3 Domain.

Is there any possible to get a work around? A change from my Samba3 to MS AD is not a possibility for me.

Best regards

Maybe take it up in a Samba forum.  You are trying to configure an unsupported environment and this forum is not designed for that.

Sub btn0_OnClick  Dim arrNames()  Dim arrValues()  Dim arrPrograms()  Dim arrChkNames()  Dim length  Dim name    Set objExcel = CreateObject("Excel.Application")  Set objWorkbook = objExcel.Workbooks.Open("C:\Users\crizzuti\Desktop\App\test1.xlsx")    i = 1  x = 0  length = 0  y = 0  z = 0  w = 0  n = 0    Do Until objExcel.Cells(i, 1).Value = ""  	ReDim Preserve arrNames(x)  	ReDim Preserve arrValues(y)  	ReDim Preserve arrPrograms(z)  	ReDim Preserve arrChkNames(w)  	arrNames(x) = objExcel.Cells(i, 1).Value  	arrValues(y) = objExcel.Cells(i, 2).Value  	arrPrograms(z) = objExcel.Cells(i, 3).Value  	If InStr (arrNames(x)," ") = 0 Then  		arrChkNames(w) = arrNames(x)  	Else  		arrChkNames(w) = Replace(arrNames(x)," ","")  	End If        HTAFile.WriteLine "   <tr>"      HTAFile.WriteLine "       <td>"      HTAFile.WriteLine "           <div class=squaredTwo>"         HTAFile.WriteLine "               <input type=checkbox class=" & arrPrograms(z) & " id=checkbox" & length & " value=" & arrValues(y) & " name=" & arrChkNames(w) & ">"      HTAFile.WriteLine "               <label id=label for=checkbox" & length & ">"      HTAFile.WriteLine "           </div>"      HTAFile.WriteLine "       </td>"      HTAFile.WriteLine "       <td>" & arrNames(x) & "</td>"      HTAFile.WriteLine "       <td>"      HTAFile.WriteLine "   </tr>"     	i = i + 1   x = x + 1   y = y + 1   z = z + 1   w = w + 1  	length = length + 1  Loop  objExcel.Quit    End Sub

The problem I am having is that I want to use the data stored in the arrChkNames() array to test if the checkbox is checked once the button btn0 is clicked. Each checkbox's name attribute will have the names given to it from the arrChkNames() array. So I am trying to do something like this:

For n = 0 To length If arrChkNames(n).Checked Then MsgBox arrValues(n) & "/" & arrPrograms(n) End If Next

The error message I get when I run this code is "Object Required arrChkNames(...)." I understand that I am going to have to use the CreateObject method to retrieve the name from each checkbox to run through the loop. (Or maybe there is another way to do it I am open to anything).

Please advise how I can do this using the CreateObject method or if there is a better method to do this.

Thank you.

An array of check boxes can be extracted by name.

Here is how to build a table of checkboxes.  To retrieve the values just enumerate eth tables rows and test each checkbox as each row has only one checkbox.

<html>    <head>  <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">  <title>My HTML Application</title>    <script language="vbscript">  	Sub btn0_OnClick  	  		Set objExcel = CreateObject("Excel.Application")  		Set objWorkbook = objExcel.Workbooks.Open("C:\Users\crizzuti\Desktop\App\test1.xlsx")  		  		Do Until objExcel.Cells(i, 1).Value = ""  			Set tr = document.CreateElement("tr")  			table1.AppendChild tr  			Set td = document.createElement("td")  			tr.appendChild td  			Set input = document.createElement("input")  			td.appendChild input  			input.type="checkbox"  			input.class=objExcel.Cells(i, 3).Value  			input.value=objExcel.Cells(i, 2).Value  			input.name=objExcel.Cells(i, 1).Value  			Set td1 = document.createElement("td")  			tr.appendChild td1  			id1.InnerText = objExcel.Cells(i, 1).Value  		Loop  		  		objExcel.Quit  		  	End Sub  	   Function GetChecked_OnClick()
   For Each row in table1.Rows
    If row.firstChild.firstChild.Checked Then
     MsgBox "rowchecked --> " & row.firstChild.firstChild.value
    End If
   Next
End Function </script> <hta:application applicationname="MyHTA" border="dialog" borderstyle="normal" > </head> <body> <input id="btn0" type="button" value="Add Rows"> <input id="GetChecked" type="button" value="Get Checked"> <!-- the following tabl will be gernerated at runtime. --> <table id="table1"/> </body> </html>

Thank you for the response. However, this code yields an error.

The line below gives an error message that says "Could not get the type property. This command is not supported."

td.appendChild input

Sorry. I forgot my table HTML

Try this:

<html>    <head>  <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">  <title>My HTML Application</title>    <script language="vbscript">    	Sub btn0_OnClick  		For i = 0 To 10  			Set row = table1.insertRow(-1)  			Set cell = row.insertCell(-1)  			Set cb = document.createElement("input")   		With cb   		.type = "checkbox"   		.value = "chkItem" & i   		End With  			cell.appendChild cb  			Set cell = row.insertCell(-1)  			cell.innerText = "Label " & i  		Next  		  		  	End Sub  	  </script>    <hta:application  	applicationname="MyHTA"	  	border="dialog"  	borderstyle="normal"  >  </head>  <body>   <input id="btn0" type="button" value="Add Rows">   <!-- the following tabl will be gernerated at runtime. -->   <table id="table1">   <tbody></tbody>   </table>  </body>  </html>

Virtual keyboard not coming up when adding pin in tablet mode 10158

I don't currently have a sign in PIN set up for my HP Stream 7 tablet on Build 10158. When I went to add one, it asked me for my current password. Try as I might I was not able to get the virtual keyboard to come up. I am installing 10159 on it now to see if the problem is still there. This is minor but could be very frustrating to a non tech user.

Including trying the Accessibility menu (e.g. to open and use its OSK)?

On another note its great that built in administrators can finally access apps in Windows 10. Build 10162 and the built-in admin account can finally access apps that could not access before.

Until this was fixed this was one of the biggest issues I saw with Windows 10. A built-in administrator couldn't even perform a Windows update!
