Cannot Sysprep "Upgraded" Systems

Created a customized VM (both on VMware and Hyper-V) with Office 2016 Preview, Visual Studio 2013, settings, etc. using build 10074 ISO from MSDN. Fully updated the installed applications and the OS to build to 10158. Going to syspep system to prepare for clone and provisioning fails. Error indicates that upgraded versions cannot be sysprep.

This is horrible.  There is no reason to have to download over 3 GB of an upgrade for each provisioned system (over 20).

WDS PXE-E7B Error

Hi,

I've installed a WDS service on a win2012r2 on a different serveur than DCHP but same LAN.  No 66/67 option on DHCP neither IPHelper (because on the same LAN).

Error PXE-E7B : Missing MFTP server

When looking at the netwok, I can see the DHCP communication but somehow the "DHCP offer" from the WDS offer 0.0.0.0 as the IP address that logicaly, to my opinion, leads to a NAK from the DHCP server, right ? 0.0.0.0 is the client trying to PXE boot  10.180.10.201 is the DHCP (it offers a correct @IP 10.180.103.30) 10.180.10.216 is the WDS (give 0.0.0.0 as @IP...)

And this is where I can't figure out why, any suggestion ?

Johann

Secure Your WSUS Deployment

Dear All,

I was trying to secure my WSUS server. This WSUS was installed in Server 2012R2.

just to check does the following link apply to Server 2012 R2 as well? I did a search there little post or result can be found in Server 2012 R2. Appreciate that anyone can guide or alighting me in this issue.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708550(v=ws.10).asp x

Thank & regards

that's pointing to wsus 2.0 which is quite old. while I don't think much has changed, I would go with this if you have 2012 R2:

Hi Armin19,

Thank you for the link. Just the check is that the only method to hardening the WSUS? Is there any link or guide that have a full process to better hardening the wsus for security purpose. Other then the IIS change to hostname and etc. Looking forward to your reply

Thank & regards

Reply:

as far as I know, implementing SSL certificates in WSUS is really the main security focus of the product and that's done through IIS.

the rest of the security options are really outside of WSUS and depend on the infrastructure that's in front of the WSUS server, such as using proxy servers when WSUS goes out to the internet to retrieve updates - this is the most high risk portion of WSUS communication which requires protection so a proxy would definitely help.

same goes for protecting the database, if you're following best practices for SQL then you will have the database protected for WSUS, eg. not using SQL/mixed authentication and leveraging Windows authentication exclusively

you can always put WSUS behind IPsec implementations and use Microsoft NAP/NPS to really lock it down and again, these are all done beyond WSUS itself and more on the server level

the SSL implementation mentioned in the article above is really to provide a more secure means for the wsus clients communicating with the wsus server so it does nothing in protecting the server going out to the internet to retrieve updates from Microsoft - it's a bit redundant if all your clients are located in the same site and domain as the SSL option does add some performance overhead but if you want to be safe you can implement it

Dear armin19,

Thank you for the reply and inside about the hardening details. Just do check do you this still comply in Server 2012R2?

Dear armin19,

I adpoted the step on the secure and seem like does not work in 2012R2

Enable general IIS error messages

1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrator

Tools, and then click Internet Information Services Manager.

2.Expand the local computer node.

3.Right-click Web Sites, then click Properties.

4.On the Home Directory tab, click Configuration.

5. On the Debugging tab, under Error messages for script errors, click Send the following text error message to client, where the error message reads "An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator."

Result: Unable to set the re-drect to customer error page

Remove header extensions

1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrator Tools, and then click Internet Information Services Manager.

2. Expand the local computer node.

3. Right-click Web Sites, then click Properties.

4. On the HTTP Headers tab, select the X-Powered-By: ASP.NET check box, then click Remove.

Result: Able to include headers, unsure about header extensions

Able to advise on these??

Thank & regards

Restoring your computer.

I'm trying to reset my computer back it's original factory settings. Completely clear it out and start all over again. I've never had trouble before now, but it's asking me for a Windows disc to reinstall Windows, but I don't even have a disk drive and I've never had to install it before.

How can I wipe my computer clean and get it back to it's original state when I first purchased it?

I'm not worried about any files or documents. There's nothing I need to save or backup.

Hi Stacey.

How did you install OS in first place? Did the PC come with already installed OS?

If you don't have DVD drive, you can install OS by using a bootable USB flash drive:

Edge and Silverlight

I consider the following to be an open letter to Microsoft.  Please read and sign to show your support...

It doesn't seem like it was that many years ago that Microsoft introduced Silverlight as a promising new technology.  Silverlight combined the beauty of WPF XAMLs with a service-oriented approach for new age web design.  It showed great promise as a cross platform tool for introducing higher performance web applications than tradition HTML plus JavaScript applications.  My company and many others became sold on that technology and committed time and money to developing Silverlight applications.

However, Apple soon blocked Silverlight from running on its newer browsers / OSs, and Moonlight (the Linux port) never really took off.  This left Windows as the only OS to support Silverlight.  Since most of my customers used Windows as their primary business OS, this was not a problem for my company.  Even with Windows 8, Internet Explorer was still actively supported by Microsoft even as it was split into a touch version and a desktop version.

However, now with Windows 10, Microsoft is introducing a new generation browser: Edge.  While Edge promises to be faster and more compatible than Internet Explorer, there is talk that it will no longer support Silverlight.  This leaves my company and many others left facing a hard reality: we have invested many dollars into Silverlight applications that are now relegated to run on a browser that Microsoft will soon no longer support.  It will be a much harder sell to convince potential new customers that our web applications are secure and have a long future running under Internet Explorer.

Microsoft, please reconsider your support of Silverlight with Edge.  We committed to your Silverlight platform, and we now ask you to commit to us.

I would prefer you to take the issue to Microsoft by posting in the Feedback app where MS people will read and take notes.

Posting in these forum will only open an infamous chat room which never accomplishes anything other than having endless pages of " in my opinion " comments. At the end of the day, Microsoft is oblivious of this thread, and therefore nothing changes. The only thing you could have accomplished is wasting a valuable spot in the forum. A spot someone would like to have to post a real computer problem.

I would prefer to use these forums to help people with computer problems.

Silverlight will also run on Firefox with the Microsoft Silverlight Plug-in for Firefox.  But Silverlight is not the only one being phased out.  Adobe Flash will also be phased out and both will be replace with HTML5 because of security holes allowing exploits.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Keep in mind, you still have IE11 on Windows 10.  Microsoft has some valid reasons for dropping support for a lot of these addins in Edge, things like Java, Flash, Shockwave, Silverlight, ActiveX, etc etc -- in fact, a number of the browsers are dropping support for these plugins.  Look at Chrome - with version 42, they by default block NPAPI plugins, like Java.  You can enable it for now, but usually once something's relegated to experimental support in Chrome, soon it'll be completely dropped.

Microsoft is trying to show a clear distinction between Edge and IE11 - they were trying to get the cross compatibility before, but realized they needed to distance themselves from some of the issues that IE brings, and to just start over and use standards instead of plugins.

Outlook 2013 Theme automatically reverts back to White after installing KB3054855

Hi, I noticed with the new update KB3054855 installed, all our Outlook 2013 theme went back to White. We can set it back to Dark Gray again. After closing Outlook 2013 and re-launching it, the theme stayed at Dark Gray and prompted for the password (we are not joined to domain hence such implementation). After keying in the correct password, it auto reverts back to White.

It is happening to various computers but all running Office 2013 Standard edition. And it only affects Outlook 2013 (since the patch KB3054855 is for Outlook anyways) while the rest like Excel, Word and Powerpoint 2013 still retained the Dark Gray theme. After uninstalling KB3054855, the issue resolved.

Would Microsoft look into issues like these?

I used your instructions to locate Microsoft.ZuneMusic. Find its PackageFullName and remove-Appxpackage <fullname>.

(I have bad associations with Zune. Well-intended but in the same category as the Hindenburg, Titanic, and Romney's presidential run).

Then reinstall music from the windows store beta. And voila. Musica e.

Unable to Upgrade to Build 10130 from Build 10122

Dumb question, sorry. Is Build 10130 the end of the line if you can't upgrade to it or even install it from an ISO? I'm 'stuck' on Build 10122 and I get the endless Boot loop on my Acer Aspire One Netbook if  I try to upgrade (Fast/Slow ring). If I try an ISO (32bit) I can't move beyond the circling stars at installation. I'm now seeing stuff about how you can't further upgrade unless you are already on Build 10130. There is no way that my old BIOS can cope with all these technical solutions to get it to load, the options just aren't there. Does anyone know if MS are working on a 'fix' for those with problems like me? Thanks....

Reply:

Read the article  Upcoming changes to Windows 10 Insider Preview builds for more information.

However, if your computer is too old to meet the Windows 10 requirements nothing Microsoft does will help your situation.  You solution is to upgrade your system so that it meets the minimum requirements.

See the article Official Windows 10 Technical Preview Hardware Requirements

------------------------------------
Reply:

Hi

I checked those hardware requirements and apart from the PAE, NX and SSE2 stuff yes I can match that. The thing is none of this was a barrier on previous versions of Windows 10. I've even run some checks on my system via some dos commands and they all come back saying I have the all important NX onboard, it's just I can't get into the bios to change anything, if it needs changing even. My netbook runs Windows 7 starter, it was even capable of running VMware Workstation to test previews of Windows 8 a while back, albeit really really slowly. Loads of other people have had installation issues with this build too, so I'm hoping MS do fix whatever it was that they changed.

------------------------------------
Reply:
Have you downloaded and run the Upgrade Assistant: FAQ to check if your system meets the requirements for Windows 8.1?

------------------------------------
Reply:

No I didn't. but since every build until 10130 worked, I assumed it was academic. I will do that now, well later though.

------------------------------------
Reply:

OK, 2 things;

Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant: No problems detected, invited me to pay & upgrade.

The NX capability issue:

I ran the commands; "wmic" and then "os get" to test for the presence of 'NX' etc in the bios, it was looking at DataExcecutionPreventions. It was TRUE for 32bit apps, Available and Drivers. It returned a '2' for SupportPolicy which apparentl;y means its there and ON.

So looks like my Acer Aspire One Netbook (Win7 starter with 2 GB RAM) is good to go, on any Win10 preview as long as its not Build 10130.

UPDATE: It turns out that the above excursion into the cultural dessert of Build 10130 has been ended.

Build 10147 (32bit ISO) fell into my lap and answered all my problems.

No tweaking this or that under the bonnet, it just installed and worked. Back in business!

------------------------------------
Reply:

Reverted back to Build 10122, then set netbook to fast ring and downloaded FBL_Impressive 10159. No problem installing and it works. Looks like build 10130 was a very nasty piece of work all along.

It has the content of the ppt and you should be able to view the online version of Steven's presentation.

I've also added some additional blogs, by Bob and Thomas.
