Can't See installed CSP in Certificate Template/Request Handling/CSP Selection
I am trying to set up a Code Signing Certificate Template so that the requester has to use the Utimaco CryptoServer CSP.
However, I am not given the choice of that CSP when I edit the template.
I am editing the template on the Corporate Issuing CA - which definitely has the CSP installed. I
I copied the default "Code Signing" V1 template as a V2 (W2K3) and go to the Request Handling Tab. The choices it gives me are the four Microsoft CSPs (Base, Enhanced, Enhanced RSA/AES, Strong)
Is there a trick that I am missing? I want to force the requesting device to have to use an locally installed Utimaco CSP when requesting the cert.
The CA is W2K8 R2

Hi,
Have you restarted the server? If the issue persists after you restart the server, please run certutil -csptest -v > outputfile to test the CSPs installed on the server.

Do you have enabled in certificate template, tab Request Handling "Allow private key to be exported"? Some of the CSP (for example SafeSign CSP) cannot be used if you enable this setting.
Also sometimes the CSP was not correctly registered until I inserted a card into reader for the first time.

The CSPs option is not visible on a 2008 version template but is on a 2003 version template...

Are you referring to the Utimaco CSP specifically or the list of CSPs in
general? If the latter, then on certificate template from 2008 and up, the
list of CSPs is available, it has just been moved from the Request
Handling tab to the Cryptography tab.
Even the OP stated that the list was available, it just wasn't showing the
Utimaco one. Also, the OP has clearly stated that he is trying to configure
a V2 certificate template.

Long ago saved pictures are changing content on drive.
I was told by MS Community to re-post this here, so...
Funny, most of my o/s problems have many others experiencing the same,
but I seem to be alone on this one. My latest un-google-able MS issue is
not in any forum I could find & I use quite a few, with all my Windows problems...
Windows(?) is now changing many saved pictures on my drives, & it's not the drive
w/ W8.1 Pro 64 on it, it's a separate data HDD.
Some .jpgs I have saved as part of complete sets have later changed to copies of
pictures on other drives. The name stays the same but the content is of another pic,
from somewhere else on my system.
Oddly most of the impostors are from a wallpaper folder on my boot SSD array,
but not always. This happens to many pics in different directories on one of my
ICH10R RAID1 data arrays, the one I use for pictures.
Some of the incorrect content seems to have come from video frames as well - this is truly
weird and I have not a clue as to how to fix, or even go about troubleshooting this
latest unresolved W8 problem of which I have so many.
Although many problems have arisen since 8 & 8.1 upgrades none have been this serious
or this troubling.
Besides the well discussed 'insomnia while on MS account but local works fine' issue that
continues to perplex me and sooo many others, I also get these Events...
1: NvStreamSvc; The description for Event ID 1 from source NvStreamSvc cannot be found
36: Time Service
131: Metadata staging failed....for container '0x80070490' ...of which the container
is always the same.
513: CAPI2; Cryptographic Services failed... Access is denied.
10010: DistributedCOM
Also, although I have fixed the same innocuous CBS.log issue before, sfc scan repeatedly shows
the false corrupt flagging of these .json files on each new scan, as described here...
http://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/14217-telemetry-asm-windowsdefault-json.html
...says...
""When an advanced user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are
unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or actual corruption on a
device running this update, and a later service update will resolve this issue.""
So that should not be a problem. Right ? No Malware, Bitdefender A/V scans fine.
Also 3 more sfc scans have been subsequently clean with the above noted .json files exception.
Here's the full log file...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fgkxflxnfe5i0oy/CBS.log?dl=0
One thing I notice that seems weird is the CBS.log has many references to AMD CPU
architecture, when I actually have an Intel i5-650 in an Asus P7P55D Deluxe m/b w/12g Ripjawz CL7
booting from the ICH10R Raid1 Vertex4 SSDs. I see no reference to Intel CPU architecture in there.
I don't think it's the raid controller cause some of the errant picture content comes from
picture & video files on other, non Raid drives, even using different m/b controllers.
No takers so far on this one ? If So, Thanks.
Anyone have any ideas - All input is appreciated.

WSUS Role Can't Re-Install on Server 2012; Pending Restart Even After Reboot
I'm not sure this is the best place to post this, but I'm sure someone can help me find that place of need be. After days of googling this issue, I found no resolution that worked for my situation, so after fixing it I thought I should post it here for everyone just in case.
The other day, our WSUS DB went belly up and has halted our usage of SCCM for updates. I uninstalled the SUP and WSUS to start from scratch. When I went to re-install the WSUS role, with a SQL DB not WID, it perpetually gave me a, "install failed, server pending restart," error every time I tried even after several reboots.
I tried the regedits for PendingFileRenameOperations and the Run Once key modifications that are popular fixes for this, but none resolved the issue. So, knowing how integral windows updates are to the Server Manager, I turned my eye on it. Errors galore, but once I solved those the issues still persisted with installing WSUS.
Well, I cracked open the MMC and decided to see if I could load the Update Services snap-on. Sure enough, it loaded up and let me finish the install of WSUS.
Viola! I'll check back on this thread for the next few days to watch for questions or anything. Later, space cowboy~
EDIT: I'll add this, I had neglected to remove the WSUS IIS website as well before I tried this method, so that may have had something to do with the install failing.
So, confirm you've done that as well. =D
EDIT2: Turns out this didn't actually pan out. Oddly enough, after a reboot, Windows removes all traces of WSUS installation.
However, the error was fixed by running the dism /online /restorehealth command and it repaired the bad component. I can't see anywhere in the DISM.log where it says what component it was, but it definitely fixed one component it called corrupt.

Folders are redirect using Group Policy. We don't do it manually or with a script. Post you request for assistance with redirection in the Group Policy forum.
If you ever need to copy a folder structure use RoboCopy. The whole script you posted can be done in one line with RoboCopy.

Thank you for your reply ( jrv ).
I'm using this script to apply Local Folder Redirection in few seconds to an existing folder structure:
( D:\Toni\ ) contains many folders and files: ( Documents Favorites Music Pictures Videos ).
You mentioned that I should use RoboCopy to copy the folder's with their attributes, but the thing is the folders already exist ( D:\Toni\ ) and they contain files within (sorry for not mentioning that before). So using RoboCopy to copy the default user folders ( C:\Users\Toni\ ) isn't it gonna replace the existing folders in ( D:\Toni\ )?
How do I do so keeping my files intact?
You mentioned that I should use Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) to create a folder redirection policy. Can I export it, so I can use it on different computers joined to a WorkGroup network, without taking much time or effort?
Can you post links on how to do so? Or correct the script and post it here again (preferably using PowerShell as I mentioned before).
Thanks again for your help.

Why would you redirect folders in a workgroup. You can install a workstation with redirected profile location.

Using Local Folder Redirection so I can do a clean installation on a computer with two partitions,

I did as you said, posted a question about customizing Windows 10 before installation (using a custom setup) in deployment forum.
You said that this will help me "redirect all profiles", but I don't want to redirect all the users' profiles, especially the (AppData) folder. Although the (AppData) folder preserves most of the apps' settings, it doesn't preserve the settings of the apps that are created in registry and it creates problems with some apps too.
That's why I want to redirect only the aforementioned folders.
Can you post a link on how to create a custom setup file?
Thank you for your help.

Until Vista moving the folders was harder. In Vista and later the profile folder location can actually be changed after the install but it takes some registry work and has to be done before any accounts are created. Doing it at install is the best way as all accounts are automatically redirected on first login.

Just to be on the same page... I want to perform a regular clean installation (I don't want to create an image), so after using the system preparation tool, can I apply folder redirection to this XML file created at the tutorial you sent? How do I apply folder redirection to it? Can I create an ISO/IMG file afterwards? How do I do so?
I read something about modifying .WIM files (in the provided link and in another article that I read before), but I didn't try it out because I didn't understand the steps very well.
As far as I understood... Is it possible to edit a Windows 10 ISO/IMG file (using the .WIM files or any other way) with registry keys, commands and folder redirection, and recreating an ISO/IMG file afterwards?
Is there a full and clear step by step guide to do so?

I suspect you didn't understand the article because you do not have any technical training in Windows. An MCP better would help.
The article describes how to option the install to relocate the profiles to another location.
If you do not understand what this is then this is not the correct place to provide you with that training. Look into online courses in Windows administration and deployment. The courses will bring you up to speed on how Windows is designed and how to option the deployment. You can also post your issues in the Windows Deployment forum.
The linked article is a very detailed discussion of how to relocate the profiles at install. You must read the whole article.

Did some reading, and saw that customizing the (Default User Profile) or using MDT + Windows ADK does the job better than using a script after installation.
The problem was with the time, the resources (downloads) and the effort required to use these tools, which is not needed using a script.
Will use the script temporarily, until I fully understand:

OneNote 2013 crashes when using Outlook calendar integration
I've seen other posts on this topic, but solutions provided didn't work for me. I finally realized the pattern/connection after months of frustration so thought I'd share for others in the same boat.
Action:
- In an Outlook calendar item, click the OneNote button in the ribbon to create a linked notes page
- In OneNote, select Meeting Details and pick a meeting to create a linked notes page
Result:
- For certain meetings OneNote crashes immediately and consistently
Pattern:
- I finally noticed this always and only happens on Outlook calendar items that have a virtual meeting hyperlink in the Notes. In my case, it's often a Lync meeting URL inserted through Lync/Outlook integration.
I have no solution, other than not using the OneNote feature for online meetings. I hope this information is helpful for other users in the same boat.

RDP Session Disconnect/Reconnect when RemoteApp is in Not Responding State (Server 2012)
Some of our applications running in our RDS environment tend to enter the Not Responding state while they're waiting for something in the background to happen (open a window, perform a calculation, etc.). When this happens we notice that the RemoteApp session will quickly disconnect and then reconnect. This causes an issue with dialog boxes. For example, printing to PDF. A lot of time the dialog box for specifying where to save the PDF is in the background because RemoteApp disconnected and reconnected causing the program your printing from to become the window of focus. This makes user think the program is truly not responding when in reality the dialog box is hidden and waiting for them. They then need to click the icon on the taskbar to access the dialog window.
To my knowledge we never had this issue with Server 2008 R2. Any help with this is greatly appreciated!

Hi Scott,
Are you using Server 2012 R2 from client PCs with mstsc.exe version 6.3.9600 (RDP 8.1) installed? This latest client version has fixed many z-order issues.
The connection should not disconnect/reconnect just because a particular program running in the session is not responding. This is not something I have seen before. Have you verified that the network (between the specific PC and the server) remains solid during the precise time that the disconnect/reconnect occurs?

Thanks for the reply TP. I can confirm the version of mstsc.exe is 6.3.9600. I can recreate this issue on my Windows 8.1 computer and on Windows 7 computers. I can also confirm no issue with the network at the time when this occurs. Pings to the server are ~25ms over a 6mb link. The issue almost feels like a server side issue. When this occurs it is very fast. The best way to describe it is the RemoteApp window appears to flash. On my Windows 8.1 machine it I can see what appears to be new icons on the taskbar when this happens (exiting one disappears and new one appears). I also notice that the icon will change from the app specific icon to the generic mstsc.exe icon and back again.
Thanks,
Scott

Reply:
Hi Scott,
Is the server 2012 R2?
Please confirm in the logs that a disconnect/reconnect is occurring. On the client you would look at TerminalServices-ActiveXCore and on the server side you would look at TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager.
When this happened you had a continuous ping to the server and it did not lose any pings?
Having solid pings is a good sign, but you can still have a network problem that will cause the connection to drop. You may want to update the NIC driver and firmware to the latest version recommended by your server manufacturer.
Additionally you should consider any routers/switches/etc. that are between the clients and the server as potentially suspect. For example, I have seen where a NAT router would drop a connection periodically, then the connection would be re-established and not have issues (until the next time). One way to test would be to swap in a different make and model router/switch and see if the problem still exists.
Thanks.

Hi TP,
I ran through the sequence of events that causes this and did not see any disconnect/connect in the client log. So maybe what we're experiencing isn't really a disconnect but rather something else that appears like a disconnect. While I was awaiting your reply I also tried running the application in desktop mode (mstsc.exe /admin). I did not have any issues with the "flashing" when running it this way. Seems to be something in how RemoteApp is handling these windows.

NVIDIA Geforce 6150SE nForce 430
Get Windows 10 from windows update informed me my system was not compatible with Windows 10 because NVIDIA had not released an updated driver for the Geforce 6150SE nForce 430 display adapter.
I decided to use the media creation tool to create the Win 10 installation media and try it out anyhow.
The end result was Windows 10 installed successfully. The standard Microsoft VGA display driver had no issues enabling my onboard display adapter. The display resolutions ranged from 800 x 600 to 1280 x 1024.
After the installation of windows 10 was completed, I downloaded the Windows 8 (309.08-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql) driver from the NVIDIA website and installed it. After the NVIDIA driver installation completed I had access to the NVIDIA control Panel.

Distribution Points not Deleting Removed Content
Reply:
I removed all packages from one of the DPs that was close to full, except for the client packages, and let things run over the weekend. Looking in SCCMContentLib\PkgLib on that server, I still see two additional .INI files; they correspond to Endpoint definition update packages that were created by an automatic deployment rule. Based on this, I believe I am looking at two problems
1- Some time ago (months) I had deleted the packages that the ADR was using and created a new one, but it looks like all the files from that package are still on the DP. I suspect that this is the case on all of the distribution points. How can I force my DPs to get rid of these files?
2- It also seems that expired updates which are being automatically removed from the current ADR package are not being deleted from the DPs. How can I force my DPs to delete these files without removing the entire package? Would content validation take care of this (never turned it on for most of my DPs)?

If I'm reading the article correctly, this cleanup should be an automated process, once expired updates are removed from any active deployments (which should not happen automatically). In the case of this ADR rule, that appears to be broken. Expired definition updates are automatically removed from the ADR-generated deployment, but not from the distribution points.
Also, the article applies to expired updates that have been removed from a deployment. In my case, I'm dealing with updates that are no longer present in the database, and entire packages that no longer exist.

Microsoft tech has linked this to a known bug with the automatic DP cleanup - the blog post linked above describes how things are supposed to work, but many of the scripts that handle this don't work right.
In my first case, if a package is deleted from the console, without first removing the package from the distribution points and allowing time for this to complete, the content files will be orphaned on the DP. In my second case, the issue is as I described in my second post.
My tech confirmed that there is a fix in the works for R2.

I know this is a necro post, but this is exactly what is happening to me - and I'm already running 2012 R2.
- Add a large 9gb file (WIM) to a DP.
- Delete the package without removing it from the remote DP
- large file *remains* in SCCMContentlib on the DP, even after content validation.
Only safe way to get rid of it seems to be wiping the DP and re-installing, which sucks. Guess you could do that through pre-staged content at least, but doesn't seem right.

Yeah... I finally came across this post..
http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2013/10/29/understanding-the-configuration-manager-content-library.aspx
If you look in the "Orphaned Content" heading down towards the bottom... I am just wondering when they are going to have a fix for it... :/

Came across this as well.
Content stays cluttering the DP.
Ofcourse one can remove it manually with search ie Filelocator Lite and some simple batch file using results, but only if the package/application SPxxxx is known.
And even unknown (deleted package/application) one can get it from Library Explorer (it is the greyed out entry with no name)
The only thing that stays then is the entry somewhere in DB/WMI, but that nothing

Windows Server 2012 BSOD caused by vmswitch.sys
Hello guys,
Situation is the following. I have 2 Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V installed. We have approximately 10 VMs on each server and these VMs are replicating in both directions.
We had 2 NICs in teaming (switch independent) connected to 1 switch. Interfaces are in access mode.
On Friday evening we added another switch, where we connected the other 2 NICs of each server, so we decrease the load from the 1st switch. We added these NICs to the team. The switches are connected by trunk port.
Today (Monday) at around 11am (maybe higher network load), both servers got BSOD with 3 minutes difference. One at 11:02, the other at 11:05.
On both servers the cause is listed as vmswitch.sys. I did not find any info on this happening in Google. Here is the output from WinDBG:

Please help!
P.S. We can remove switch 2, but on Switch 1 we do not have enough interfaces to plug in the other 2 NICs of each server.

Hi,
Please contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your request. To troubleshoot this kind of kernel crash issue, we need to debug the crashed system dump. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum. Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged call.

Be interested to know the nics you have.
we are experiencing the same issue with a hp dl 160 with a the HP NC362i nics.
Denis - that update seems just to fix live migration BSOD's we are experiencing the issue without performing those (server has little load). But I will certainly try the update.
Cheers
Dave

Reply:
Hello Denis,
On one of the server we have the update installed, but we do not have it on the other one (servers are in different patch groups), so I do not think this update is the issue - since on both server the problem occurred at nearly the same time, regardless of the patch being installed or not. Not to mention, patch is for live migration, not for replication - and at this point of time, we did NOT perform failover between primary and replica server.
Nonetheless, we shall re-install the patch. We shall schedule a change and perform it in the next week or two.
David,
Our NICs are: HP NC382i DP Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter.
What we noticed is that since we added the new switch, we had hosts' MAC addresses flapping between interfaces of servers and of the trunk. This was due to the algorithm we were using - Switch Independent Address Hash. Since the hosts generate the most traffic due to the replication, the traffic from the hosts was coming out from different interfaces each time. So, in outbound traffic we had loss of packets and timeouts. Unfortunately, since the switches we use are not high-end Cisco products and we cannot stack them, there is no other solution how to fix this on 2 trunked switches. As solution, we changed the teaming to Switch Independent Hyper-V port. No MAC address flapping anymore. We are waiting to see if the issue will reoccur.
In address hash algorithm we have additional layer of complexity in the outbound traffic - calculation on which interface the packet should go out from. While in Hyper-V port there is static mapping for the VMs and the host. May be (here I am speculating) this additional complexity, combined with the MAC address flapping, cause the issue with the vmswitch driver.
David, what teaming mode are you using?

Pavel

Hi Pavel,
I have been working on this issue with my colleague David Hood.
The teaming mode is switch independent with load balancing set as Hyper-v port. Previously this was set to address hash but same issue persists.

There is no set frequency to how often the BSOD occurs on the hyper-v host, sometimes the host is online for a few days and on a occasion its been online for a few hrs before failure.
At the moment there is currently only test vm's running on guests on this host, and there isn't too much load placed on the server.

Hello Dave, David,
For me it happened only once (for now). I hope it will not occur again. That is why I have not done some more advanced troubleshooting and monitoring on the systems. Nonetheless, it seems that is an issue.
Since I am in a partner organization, I am eligible to request assistance from MS. I would try to do that and provide them with the memory dumps. Hopefully, they will provide patch or some other form of fix. Will keep you updated on the development.

Pavel

Hello Dave, David,
I have been on the phone/email with MS. They checked my server and analysed the memory dump. Result is the following action plan:
Since for me the problem happened only once, may you please also follow the steps in the action plan and update me on the result?

Hello Friends,
If we have Windows 2012 Hyper-v server OR server 2012 Hyper-v Cluster and receiving following bugchcek on nodes : DRIVER_IRQL_NOT _LESS_OR_EQUAL (vmswtich.sys) randomly , then try this.
You may have configured "VM switch" on NIC teaming using Windows server 2012 inbuilt application or 3rd party application. Nic teaming is supported in Hyper-v.
"But, TCP Chimney Offload is not supported with Server 2012 software-based NIC teaming."
Therefore, you can try disabling TCP chimney offload in Windows and also disable TCP chimney from each NIC properties>Advance settings. {eg; IPV4 offload, TCP checksum offload etc..}
If we still face same issue then it could be issue with physical NICs{hardware} , therefore try removing NIC teaming and use Hyper-v VM swtich with single NIC to isolate issue.

Disable automatic Windows update in Windows 10
I do agree with Windows developers, that we should always keep Windows up to date, but we should be able to delay the installation of updates for various reasons, such as when we're using a slow or metered internet connection, or when we need to use all available broadband and computer power.
When I changed this registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"AUOptions"=dword:00000001
Windows update's "Choose how updates are installed" combo box was grayed out, and above it was written:
Some settings are managed by your organization.
I guess that this key controls the group policy option to stop automatic Windows updates (depending on the key value).
I entered the value 1 but still not sure whether this key works or not.
How do I disable automatic updates, and does this key work in Windows 10 build 10240?
Thank you for your help.

Remote Join domain
Found a script that will join a domain. I need to run this script from my own IT workstation. Join a remote computer that have lost it's domain membership. Problem with the script is that it uses my own credentials and that is not available. I would like to connect to the WMI workspace as local administrator and join the domain with domain credentials. It this possible with one script?
The workflow I would like to achieve is
From my IT workstation:
Create or reset password for an existing computer account.
Run a script that joins the domain.
Ask the user to reboot.
That would be awesome in my own opium.

Win 10 install hangs after reboot - fixed?
Hi
I had the same problem with an HP dv3-4540 laptop. (Win 10 install hangs just after restart.)
After days of messing with graphics drivers, etc, I finally:
1. Re-flashed the BIOS
2 Performed a clean boot
3. Started the install again, using the MediaCreationTool
Problem cleared! Win 10 installed!

Custom sounds must be placed in \windows\media folder for notification sounds to work
I've already solved my issue, but it was a b#@$ so I want to put this out there for others who might need it in the future:
I like a specific new mail notification sound to play when Outlook receives new mail -- it's the old "Outlook Mail Chimes" sound. In Windows 10, this is largely a function of the desktop notification feature.
Historically I keep this sound .wav file in Documents\... and then in the System Sounds control panel I point the "new mail notification" entry to the file.
In Windows 10, the sound does not play doing it this way. BUT, if I place a copy of the .wav file into the \Windows\Media folder then bang - it now plays the sound fine!
Best wishes all/jim

According to the error information, there are some invalid characters in the file (C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\ClientAccess\ecp\quarantine\web.config ).
In Exchange Mailbox server, when we open this file with notepad, we will find that all the content are garbled. That is the cause.
Solution:
1. Try to copy the following code to replace the contents of the file, and save it.
2. Restart mailbox server.

Error 2912 Deploying VM template to untrusted host.
This is less of a question and more of an FYI for others who may come across this.
When you have untrusted Hyper-V hosts in your environment, updating the VMM agent is an involved process. (Described here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/scvmm/archive/2015/05/19/how-to-update-untrusted-hosts-in-system-center-2012-r2-virtual-machine-manager.aspx)
However, after this update I could no longer deploy a template from my Library server to these hosts, troublesome as they were hosting my Gateway servers and I was trying to add a second gateway for testing purposes. That's when I came across the famous 2912 error that seems to litter these forums. Specifically, mine mentioned a BitClientJob in the wsman failure. However, I followed the guidelines in the blog above to update my hosts, including exporting the cert from the untrusted host to the VMM server. Unfortunately, a file copy from a library server in the SCVMM domain to an untrusted host uses BITS over HTTPS when deploying the file over LAN. Therefore the cert that was imported to the VMM servers also needs to be imported to the Library server to authenticate the BITS transfer.
In short, when you export the cert after upgrading the Untrusted Hyper-V hosts, don't forget to also import the cert to the Trusted People container in the Library server.
