Email Archiving in E xchange
Hi guys,
Could some point me to some of the best e/mail archiving solution out there.
I am concerned with the way we are creating psts.

Remote Connectivity - Outlook connectivity failing - The RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE error (0x6ba)
First time asking in this furum!
I am getting this error at the remote connectivity site testing outlook connectivity.:
Attempting to ping the MAPI Referral Service endpoint with identity d0e64acf-7fbd-4ca5-a386-742c2d8fa748@xxxxxxxx.xx:6002. The ports are random(6001,6002,6004), guess this is normal?!?
The RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE error (0x6ba) was thrown by the RPC Runtime process.
Im have a small hosting setup with 2 exchange 2013 servers. one is MBX and CAS, the other is only MBX. All databases are on the MBX only server. Running with wildcard ssl cert and split dns. Clients can connect but are sometimes complaining about long startup times in outlook. Mobile connectivity seems fine. Autodiscover tests are no problem.
This i have treid are:
Changing from outlook anywhere nagiotiate to basic auth. and ticking off the "allow ssl offlaoding".
Setting INTERNAL NETBIOS and FQDN in host file.
Setting up a dedicated HTTP redirect site on separate server.
Firewall off
I have not completly disabled IPV6, just unchecked it in interface properties. Should i try this? Some blogs says this is not recommended.
Still getting this error.
Anyone have any idees?

The ports 6001, 6002 and 6004 aren't random, they're fixed.

Welcome to Technet forum.
The issue could be caused by the following reasons:
1. Failures in DNS name resolution
2. Missing or invalid ValidPorts key in the registry of the Internet-facing Exchange 2007 Client Access server or of the Exchange 2003 server
3. Exchange services not listening on the required endpoints
4. Firewalls blocking the required ports
We could refer to the following link to troubleshoot:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd439392(v=exchg.80).aspx
Notice: this link also apply to Exchange 2013.
We suggest you don't disable IPv6 for Exchange server.

Still troubleshooting this issue.
I cant wrap my head around the fact that outlook users are not having any problems but when i run outlook connectivity test on RemoteConnectivityAnalyzer site it fails with "Attempting to ping the MAPI Address Book endpoint with identity: d0e64acf-7fbd-4ca5-a386-742c2d8fa748@xxxxxxx.Xx:6004, The RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE error (0x6ba) was thrown by the RPC Runtime process"
The thing that bothers me is that this test passed a while ago after installation and all of the sudden it fails. No change to the servers at all.
How can DNS fail after it all worked some time ago. How can there be missing registry keys? These are just things that bothers my, its so frustrating.

When running RCA i get this error every other time. Thats right, i get it every other time. Im thinking this could be commiunication error. Anyone got any tips?

RDS high availability
Dear All,
I have several questions to ask you regarding RDS 2012 R2.
Most of Company tries to implement RDS in cost effective way.
We can deploy RDS two different ways.
1. All RDS roles in same server
2. Can be used one server per role.
I want to know best RDS high available solution.
Several articles on internet describe only one RDS role for failover(Session host or connection broker)
1. But If i install all RDS roles in same server(Connection Broker, Session Host,Licence), How can I use HA?
2. Can I use hyper-v vm as a clone of my Physical RDS server as HA?
3. Can I use Azure for High available solution of my onprem RDS server
Very much appreciate if you can explain those things and possibility
Reply:
Hi , in order to achieve full HA you should use a SQL Server Cluster for the RD Database. 2 Connection brokers in HA and at least 2 Servers in a collection for the users. You should also configure a Scale out File Server Cluster to store the User Profile Disks and two RD Web and Gateway servers in NLB either Microsoft or 3rd Party.
Yes you can have Physical RDS and VM RDS servers in the same deployment although going all VM would probably be the best option.
Azure is a different story , I would suggest having a separate deployment in Azure although you can technically have some parts of the deployment in Azure , latency would be totally different when connected in your Lan vs Azure.
------------------------------------
Reply:
In order to make your configuration highly available, you can install all RDS roles into a single virtual machine that runs on top of Microsoft Hyper-V Failover Cluster. You need at least two physical servers, obviously, and some shared storage. Using directly attached storage (internal drives) is much better because of latency and performance. This option also eliminates an SPoF that any separate SAN or NAS would be.
To convert your DAS into an HA/FT shared storage for your cluster you can either use Storage Spaces Direct https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/storage/storage-spaces/storage-spaces-direct-overview with Windows 2016 Datacenter or StarWind Virtual SAN https://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-virtual-san that is less expensive and does the same.

some feedback on the rxImport and rxSqlServerData functions
I just tried porting an existing RODBC based project to revoscalr. some things I found that just didn't work:
1. rxDataStep vs rxImport. seems like way too much overlap. I tried to just stick to rxDataStep, but..
2. rxDataStep don't like this SQL query as a source, but rxImport had no problems:
"select IssuerTradingSymbol as Symbol, isnull(nullif(FullName,''), CompanyName) as CompanyName, Sector, Industry, SubIndustry, CompanyName from Issuer"
3. rxImport spits out no rows returned and other messages, even with verbose=0 and reportProgress = 0
4. rxImport returns TRUE if the query returns no rows, vs a data.frame if it does return rows. why cant it just return an empty data.frame? the error handling code on this is mucky
5. rxImport and rxDataStep cannot be used against rxSqlServerData with a stored procedure to fetch data. I had to leave about 50% of my project using rodbc. this seems like a major oversight. I suspect/hope I'm doing something really silly and this isn't a major oversight and the docs can be updated with examples of using a stored procedure
6. The rxExecuteSQLDDL docs states it requires and RxOdbcData, but seems to work fine with rxSqlServerData. the docs should reflect this
7. rxExecuteSQLDDL accepts both DML and DDL. very misleading function name
8. The rxExecuteSQLDDL function can be used to execute a stored procedure that does not return results, HOWEVER, it requires a RxOdbcData or rxSqlServerData as a data source. neither of these objects can bet set up without a source query. To execute a stored procedure, I had to set up the data source with a dummy table name like this:
RxSqlServerData(table = "xxx", connectionString = nativedDbConnection, useFastRead = TRUE)
I think this API design needs some work
I'm glad to see MS doing some work in this space and the product set looks very promising. I hope this feedback is of use
Reply:
Ethan,
Regarding (5):
I'm able to get the results of a stored procedure using RxSqlServerData. Does your procedure happen to PRINT inside it?
I agree with your points above about method inconsistency. FYI, I've wrapped the pattern below inside of a helper function. I'm able to run almost any SQL that I would from RODBC using RxSqlServerData/rxImport (after the NOCOUNT tricks / dummy final result set).
Your post above was the first time I'd tried to use PRINT inside of RxSqlServerData; that does feel like a bug to me and something that should be fixed by Microsoft.
My workaround:
EXEC sp_execute_external_script @language = N'R' , @script = N' # If you want to run multiple statements (and ignore the DDL / SELECT statement nuances) you can use NOCOUNT # However you do need to be careful about error handling # The PRINT statement (or PRINT inside a stored procedure) can cause problems too # The code returns the result set from the *FIRST* query that has one (fairly non-intuitive behavior) ds <- RxSqlServerData(sqlQuery=" SET NOCOUNT ON; /* ARBITRARY SQL HERE */ -- EXEC my_stored_procedure /* this works fine for me */ SET NOCOUNT OFF; SELECT 1 as dummy WHERE 1=0 ", connectionString="Server=.;Database=XXX;uid=XXX;pwd=XXX") r <- rxImport(ds) print(str(r)) ' GO

Logon problems after migration from SQL Server 2005 to 2012
We have recently migrated the SQL Server from 2005 to 2012. User gets login failure when connected to 2012 server; but can successfully login in 2005 server using the same connection string information. In both the servers, individual user logins are not added.
How access is given to users if not added directly in logins.
Is it right, that the local group SQLServer2005MSSQLUser group is used to grant access to users? Is it possible to view the members of this group?
How this is being handled in 2012 as the security model is changed. I don't have experience in SQL Server and would like to get guidance in fixing this logon problem.
Thanks for the help!

Hi Shyam,
No, security model has not been changed in 2012 as compared to 2005.
When you migrated Databases to 2012, did you also migrated logins to 2012? There is special RevLogin script from Microsoft to migrate login between SQL instances.
Thanks,

Hi Sunil,
Thanks for the reply. I see the logins are same under Security|Logins in both the servers. Also no account has been added individually to the databases security.
The only difference is that I couldn't find equivalence to the local groups SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$ , SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$ and SQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$ in SQL Server 2012. Rather I see NT Service\MSSQLSERVER and NT SERVICE|SQLSERVERAGENT.
Are these above groups linked? Thanks for the response.

Hello Shyam,
Actually there's a change in the security model. You have probably upgraded your Windows OS too? Right? Starting with Windows Server 2008 R2, now we have Virtual Accounts and SQL Server uses these Virtual Accounts as a service account, for instance like you mentioned "NT Service\MSSQLSERVER".
Simply, Virtual Accounts are unique instances of the built-in system account Network Service.
You experience login failures, because the new server (I assume you performed the upgrade side by side, not in-place) would not have those local Windows Groups like you have on the server where your SQL Server 2005 instance is.
If you have an Active Directory, create a Windows Group according to your user groups and create Logins in the SQL Server for these Windows Groups and grant permissions accordingly. For instance create a group for Business Analysts, another group for Developerts etc. This way, it's much easier to manage users and permissions. Also, you will not experience such problems you have had next time.

Did you ensure that SQL Server is using mixed authentication? Right click on your server in Management Studio, select properties and then security. Ensure SQL Server and Windows authentication is checked.
This will explain what you are encountering IF you are using SQL logins.

Shared Storage Configuration
I'm setting up a new two node cluster and am new to virtualization. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to configure my storage and how many physical drives and raid arrays I should have and then how many LUNs I should break that down to and then placing the VHDs on top of that. I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket but want to have a configuration that makes sense.
I have a 12-bay MD3200 DAS with (4) 4TB 7.2k SAS Drives and (4) 600GB 15K SAS drives. I also have a bunch of 1TB 7.2K SAS drives I can use and 2 or 3 300GB 10K SAS drives I can use. My original plan was to put the (4) 600GB 15K drives in a RAID 10 and put the SQL data and Log VHDs on it using two LUNS each with a VHD on it. Then use the (4) 4TB drives in a RAID 10 for everything else (VMs and VHDs). I'm starting to question if I should have more RAID Arrays then this. For Instance, should I do (2) separate 600GB RAID 1s, one for SQL Data, One for Logs? Should I have (2) separate 1TB RAID1s for the Exchange data and logs? Here are the VMs I'm setting up, if you can make any drive recommendations for what drives to put in my Power Vault, what RAID arrays I should Create and how many LUNs I should setup for my shared storage I'd appreciate it. Below are the VMs I'm going to be creating.
SharePoint
SQL
Exchange
RDS
Office Online Server
File and Print Share Server

i'm not familiar with that storage enclosure and how it's managed but if it allows you to create a storage pool where it does auto-tiering, it would certainly simplify things
i agreed with RAID 10 only for your SQL workloads
everything else you should use RAID 5 or RAID 6
not knowing your space requirements makes it challenging to make a detailed recommendation
------------------------------------
Reply:
------------------------------------
Reply:
the more RAIDs you create, the less capacity you will have as you lose more drives for redundancy
7.2k can be quite slow, i would try to use up your 10k in one RAID and 15k drives in separate RAID but take capacity expansion into consideration as well if you need to add more drives later on within the same enclosure
it's certainly not necessary to have a 1:1 ratio of VHD and LUN. the whole point of CSVs in clustering is to let you share a LUN among multiple VHDs
if you had a larger SAN you could argue to have more LUNs to balance workloads and performance but i would say 2 LUNs max per RAID here. everything is going to the same back-end so you won't really gain much in terms of performance
------------------------------------
Reply:
------------------------------------
Reply:
i would not recommend a mirror RAID 1 for SQL or most workloads for that matter. the less drives you have in your array, the slower the performance will be
you can see here that RAID 10 seems to be the best fit for SQL performance as well as redundancy:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190764(v=sql.105).aspx
RAID 5 is the best choice after that and usually a comfortable configuration for other workloads which are not as write-intensive as SQL
separating your SQL data into multiple VHDs is fine as well, mostly just for better managing disk space growth for system DBs, app DBs, log, temp, etc.
------------------------------------
Reply:
The less virtual volume groups you have, the better.
Go with 2-3: 15K drives in RAID 10 for SQL, the 1 TB bunch - RAID10 for everything else (the more you have the better the performance) and leave the 4 TB as RAID10 for infrequently accessed stuff. RAID5 is too risky, and RAID6 at 4 drives gives you the same capacity as RAID10.

Lync 2010 - CTRL+V (Paste) and Other Edit Shortcuts Do Not Work
Using Lync 2010 - In the IM conversation window, CTRL+V and other CTRL+<key> shortcuts do not work. Right click using a mouse and selecting 'Paste' or 'Copy', etc, in the drop down menu all work correctly however. The 'Delete' key does not work either but my 'Backspace' key works fine.

Thanks Paul for sharing the link. However I am still getting the same error. Am I missing something here?

Could you try inserting a file via SSMS or SSDT? I tried to repro this directly and it worked just fine.

Populate 'to' address of recieved email with another email address
Hi,
We have email routed from one Exchange Online Mailbox to another. The routed email comes from a secondary mailbox that is seldom used. We have email integration with dynamics CRM Online which checks the 'to' address of mail in the inbox to make sure it matches the address set-up in CRM.
The issue is the email routed from the secondary mailbox doesn't contain the 'to' address of the Mailbox it's being forwarded to and therefore is ingored by CRM. Is there a way to populate the 'to' address with the Mailbox address of the Mailbox the email is being forward to.
e.g. Box2 is routing Email to Box1. The Mail routed to Box1 has the original 'to' value populated when recieved in Box2. We need the 'to' value of email being routed to box 1 to contain the address of Box1 as well or in place of the Box 2 Address that is populated on the original email.

Do you have a chance for a retry? But this time, right click on the Setup.exe and "run as administrator".
If you hit the same problem again, setup logs would be useful for further investigation.

Hello,
Please copy the media (F:\ drive) to a new folder on the local disk (C:\SQLTemp\), unzip ISO file, if necessary, and run SQL Server setup with the Run As Administrator option.
On the Server Configuration page of SQL Server 2016 setup, could you please use "Local System" as the service account instead of the default service accounts or provide a Windows account with administrator privileges and a strong password. For more information, please read the following article:
http://www.sqlcoffee.com/SQLServer2016_0001.htm
Hope this helps.

I'm having the exact same problem.
I tried installing 2012 from an ISO and mounted the ISO as a drive. I am now trying to install 2016 Dev version downloaded from the Microsoft Dev Essentials website. The install has failed using both media sources. I have run both installs as administrator and also as the machine local admin.
This is therefore probably an issue with Windows rather than the installation settings of SQL. It is blocking setting values in the registry during the configuration setup at the end of the installation. I read on a different forum that the solution is to reinstall windows. I can't afford to do that so am still searching for a solution.
Would using "Local System" account rather than the setup defaults affect the installation failing, wouldn't it would just change the account SQL runs under if or when the installation succeeds?

Hello there,
You found a solution? If not, when checking the log portion again, I see that you added every one of the services. Of course it's not a crime, but I suspect that installation one of those new services might be faulty. So, can you try the installation only with the Database Engine? And then, you may want to try to add the other services one by one, so we can find out which is the problematic one, if my guesswork is right...

JDBC Eclipse
Hi,
I am trying to use the JDBC driver with Eclipse IDE to connect to a SQL Server on Linux instance.
Here is my code so far
public static void SQLtest() { String userName = "SA"; String password = "****"; String url = "jdbc:sqlserver://192.168.254.16:1434;integratedSecurity=true;"; try { Class.forName("com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver"); } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { System.out.println("Finding Driver Failed"); e.printStackTrace(); } try { System.out.println("Establishing Database Connection..."); Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url, userName, password); } catch (SQLException e) { System.out.println("Connection Failed"); e.printStackTrace(); } finally { System.out.println("Connection Successful!"); } } and here is the error that I get...
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The TCP/IP connection to the host 192.168.254.16, port 1434 has failed. Error: "Connection timed out: no further information. Verify the connection properties. Make sure that an instance of SQL Server is running on the host and accepting TCP/IP connections at the port. Make sure that TCP connections to the port are not blocked by a firewall.".
Conditional Acess with Exchange on-prem and Sony/LG Devices
I've experienced this problem for the past 6 months and Microsoft's support seems to be ignorant when it comes to resolving this particular problem.
To summarize my problem:
I manage thousands of mobile devices with Microsoft Intune (Standalone) where most of them are enforced by Conditional Access policies, both Android and iOS
There seems to be a handful of Sony and LG devices that are being blocked by Conditional Access regardless of EAS Activation and there is no way around it.
I've had several tickets regarding the matter but we never seem to come to a conclusion.
Are anyone else also experiencing this problem?

where clause error
i have this code
Select p_firstname, p_email
From teacher as t inner join borrowed as b
where t.p_id = b.p_id;
and it gives 'Record Count: 0'
note: the code is correct
- Edited by Anas.zahab Tuesday, December 27, 2016 8:05 PM
Reply:
Using an inner join clause requires you to provide the conditions for joining using "on":
select ... from t inner join b on t.x = b.x order by ...;
And for future reference, please choose the forum that is most appropriate for your question. This has no relationship to the .net framework. In addition, no one can read your mind or see your screen. Comments like "gives me error" are not useful - post the complete error message.

Change your code like:
Select p_firstname, p_email
From teacher as t, borrowed as b
where t.p_id = b.p_id;
or
Select p_firstname, p_email
From teacher as t inner join borrowed as b
on t.p_id = b.p_id;
As scott_morris-ga said, if you are going to use JOIN keyword then you must use ON as a filtering predicate.
