NEEDED: More Answerers

NEEDED: More Answerers

We need more answerers in this forum! Let me know if you've been part of this community pretty consistently for at least 6 months, have answered at least 100 questions (with at least 1,000 Recognition Points) and are interested in helping propose and mark answers. Sorry about the requirements, but it helps make sure we get help from people who are experienced and known in the community.

The basic idea is that you would propose an answer and then mark it 7 days later. When the OP chimes in, we might need to provide new answers and unpropose the old ones. The Answerers will need to agree to follow these guidelines: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1059.forum-moderation-guide-managing-posts-and-threads-marking-answers.aspx#Guidance

I'm inviting the following community members to be given the role of Answerer:

Reply here if you qualify and want to help or if you are accepting your invitation to join us! Please reply after you read the guidelines from the link above and reply whether you agree to follow them.

Thanks!

I re-vote for Tibor as Moderator :-)

* I recommend that discussion regarding who does not fit, to make in private, while voting + we can make in public :-)
I aware that it might take some time to get response in private (I have some messages waiting for respond)
, but if possible, it is better option.

It will be great to add him here and to the Transact-SQL forum as well.

I definitely vote + for Erland !
Especially in the T-SQL forum

* I am less familiar with Hilary Cotter and Martin.Cairney, but I checked the profile and several answers, and seems like a good choice +

True, he is doing great in all SQL Server forums. I have seen him in other forums as well :-)
Impressive start point!
* With that been said, he is really new here (2 moths) and some time is needed before he can be fit for this IMO.

I will tell you what... If he continue for the next several months in the same way he is doing in the last 2 months... And if no issue will be found, You are welcome to ask him to contact me for more information regarding interview as one of the TOP contributors in the forum. It will be great opportunity to discuss in private some issues if there are.

Each week we pick one top contributor on MSDN and TechNet Forums, write about their forum achievements (and also about their other achievements), and we interview them. You can see example of previous interviews here. In this case I need his email (I already have his MSDN URL). But again... not yet... we do not have to be hasty :-)

* I edit a bit the message to clarify more clearly that this is not an invitation for today... but an option for the future, according to the activities during several months at least.

When people get their questions proposed and marked, they feel appreciated, and then they answer more. This ultimately helps more people answer questions.

Phil,

This is very simple - if you know the answer to OP's question, don't wait for others to answer - answer right away. Even if the question is very basic - you still can help a person who needs the help.

The forum moderation is actually a job to keep forums in good health. Say, you see a question asked in the wrong forum - you can move it to the right forum.

You see a SPAM post or post breaking the rules or anything along the lines - you can delete that post if you're a moderator.

If you see wrong answers marked - you can unmark the answers.

Also, if there is, say, a simple question and many people answered, but only one answer is marked, you can mark other correct answers. I sometimes do that to restore the fairness.

So, if you'd like to help with the forum's moderation - it would be great. But if not - no problem at all, you can keep doing what you're already doing - education and promoting SQL Server knowledge.

Phil, as always in the real (SQL Server) world: It depends on.

I tend to propose answer as "Proposed Answer" , when I with my (limited) knowledge can say: Yes, that's clearly the answer.

If I see an answer where I am not very sure, but it looks to go into the right directions for a solution, then I vote for the answer; but I am not propose it.

Anyway, the OP himself and forum moderators have the option to "Not proposed" proposed answers.

Check them out. The requirements are 100 answers, 1K Recognition Points, and 6 months in the forum. If they don't meet those requirements, let me know. Otherwise, we'll keep the invite as Answerers.

Keep in mind that the reason why I'm doing more recruiting is because the existing moderators are too busy to meet the need. So if all the moderators stepped it up, we wouldn't have this thread (the need wouldn't exist). On the flip side, though, people get busy, and that's understandable.

Thanks!

Great. You were already an Answerer, but I'm promoting you to Moderator. You've certainly proven yourself. The new role includes helping with Merging, Splitting, Moving, and Deleting Spam. You can also edit posts to remove explicative or name calling (if the post still has valuable parts). When editing, I replace the words with <edited> just so it's clear.

But the biggest need is still to propose answers and then mark them 7 days later!

Here, I'll just answer you directly. It's hard to tell if Naomi's answers map to your questions completely.

Would you prefer that those who assume the role of 'answerer', do more marking of other peoples replies as 'propose as answer' or 'mark as answer', or would you prefer that they answer the OP/Asker themselves?

Answerers only get the additional ability to mark answers. Because the guidelines ask Answerers to propose answers first (and wait 7 days), there task is simply to propose an answer, wait 7 days, and then mark it. (Or mark an answer someone else proposed, at least 7 days after it was proposed.)

If an Answerer can answer the question themselves, then that's great! Please do that too. But, you can't answer them all, and we want to work together as a team. So the Answerer should also try to answer questions or give more info to an existing answer (with their own reply). Whenever possible, someone else should propose their answer.

Should answerers wait a certain amount of time before answering the OP/Asker themselves, to allow others opportunities to answer, or should they answer OP/Asker right away, if they know the answer?

No, if you're there, the question isn't answered (or if you know an additional answer), the Answerer should feel free to answer right away. That's fine. There are more than enough questions to go around. And if we end up with two answers (from different perspectives) on every single question, then our forum became and awesome and vibrant community! There are only a few forums like that (that I can think of), like Visual Fox Pro, Small Basic, TechNet Wiki, MSDN/TechNet Forums, and MSDN/TechNet Profiles. Most forums don't have as many regulars on every single thread... they have to divide and conquer to meet the need. But if we can get a busy forum like this one up to that level, then that would be awesome! It would also likely result in more of the questions getting answers proposed and marked, and that would make me happy. =^)

Thanks, Phil!

Sounds good. Thanks for the feedback. Vishe is working on this, so I'll work with him to improve his reputation in this area. He does give a lot of good answers too, or he wouldn't have as many marked answers and Recognition Points. (And I haven't seen any mention of him gaming the system.) So that just means a stronger focus on quality and more time devoted to understanding the question and issue first.

Exactly.

I also don't care too much about labels like "Answerer" etc (although, I'm glad that Shanky removed a certain person from the list),

Understood. The labels are just for accountability. It's really awards (like MVP, MCC, high Recognition Points, etc.) that show when someone has a rich history of helping the community. And that correlates more to a person's reputation.

For example, I think I have the Owner role in this forum. I barely even remember, because it doesn't matter to me. The only reason why I want to be the Owner is so that I have the ability to directly add people to roles and help the forum community grow. But at the same time, I think it helps the community to see a Microsoft employee and Owner pop their head in every once in awhile to make sure everything is running.

and I really don't like this business of other people than the person who asked the question marking posts as answers.

Agreed. Guidelines #1, 2, 4, and 7 exist for that reason:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1059.forum-moderation-guide-managing-posts-and-threads-marking-answers.aspx#Guidance

1. Propose an answer first. Give the Asker/OP a chance to select the right answer.

2. After proposing an answer, wait one week (7 days), and then mark the answer(s). This gives the OP more than enough time to return. More often than not, the OP will not mark an answer and will not reply again. After waiting the week, then mark the answer. The Asker/OP is your client, and you want to help him and make him happy. Many OPs have gotten angry when Moderators mark answers without waiting a few days (waiting 7 days sets a clear message that the Asker/OP is the client and that you are patient). Plus the people who answer the questions get 5 more points (15 Recognition Points instead of 10) if the Asker/OP is the one who marks the reply as an answer. One exception (to proposing first) is if the thread hasn't been responded to for over 6 months (you're cleaning up a forum). But even then, it's better to propose first if you're uncertain about an answer.

4. Ask the OP to mark answers (if it makes sense). If the OP returns and says thank you, but does not mark the answer, then first reply with a polite request for them to mark the answer. I use, "If your question is answered, please mark a post someone made as the answer." And when you do that, if your post is the answer, then I'd ask someone else to make the "please mark a reply as the answer" request (otherwise it looks like you're saying, "give me points by marking my answer"). This actually works most of the time (if they already thanked you, then they come back and mark it). It means that many times new OPs don't know about the marking answers feature.

7. You should unmark answers/proposals VERY rarely (and communicate first). Obviously unmark answers and proposed answers if you accidentally marked them as answers but didn't mean to (try not to do that). If you unmark an answer that was marked by the Asker/OP, then you're being disrespectful to them. They are the client in this scenario. You're trying to help them, not fight them. So instead you can propose additional answers, mark additional answers, or explain in a reply why you think another post is an additional answer.

So, then why mark answers at all?

Because most of the time, the OP doesn't post again. They get the answer and don't both respond or mark an answer. We could just leave 90% of the answers unmarked then, but that's what dries up forums. Marking answers is proven to help increase the life of a forum. It results in far more answered questions.

And that's what this is about... helping the community.

It is? Well, in case there is any uncertainty, I am completely uninterested in moderation. My focus is on helping people by trying to answer people's questions, or at least encourage them to clarify their posts, so that they have a chance of getting an answer. (Although for January and February, it is not likely that you will see a lot of me at all, since I will be on a long vacation.)

I'm sorry, but this is almost too much. Is this for real? Recognition points and all that?

4. Ask the OP to mark answers (if it makes sense). If the OP returns and says thank you, but does not mark the answer,

I can tell you, that I much more appreciate someone coming back and saying thank you and clearly expressing that my answer helped them than just clicking a checkbox. (Here it may matter that I read the forums over the NNTP bridge, so I don't even see the markings in the normal case.)

Because most of the time, the OP doesn't post again. They get the answer and don't both responding or marking an answer. We could just leave 90% of the answers unmarked then, but that's what dries up forums.

Really? You mean people would stop asking questions, if answers were not marked? I find that difficult to believe.

Yeah. I think I was looking for "Yes" or "No". This still isn't a "No", but it is clear. =^)

Yup. Algorithms, logic. analytics, and all that. Some crazy research was done too.

As an MVP, you should understand that (even if you don't agree with it). They ask for metrics every year to prove your community impact.

Agreed. Saying thank you is even better. We've created entire blogs around the basic concept of saying Thank You:

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/wikininjas/

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/forumninjas/

Because most of the time, the OP doesn't post again. They get the answer and don't both responding or marking an answer. We could just leave 90% of the answers unmarked then, but that's what dries up forums.

Really? You mean people would stop asking questions, if answers were not marked? I find that difficult to believe.

You find that difficult to believe? Actually, me too. Then I did some digging and saw how true it is. Go visit some forums. Most of them are like that. This forum was like that. We were only answering one out of 5 questions a few years back. Now this forum is doing much better.

You are a little bit of a minority, being someone who doesn't care about the gamification aspects, doesn't want to participate with the gamification aspects (don't want the metrics for anything), and are still motivated to give wholeheartedly to the community (expecting no recognition except perhaps being grateful for a few "Thank you" messages, the slow increasing of your reputation, and awards like MVP). I've only seen three folks who fit into that category (of 10K plus members of these forums). Maybe four people. But the truth is that a lot of people see your high Recognition Points, your MVP award, and your MCC award, and even if they never read anything you've ever written, they read your answers trusting you immensely and intensely (as they should). And all that happens subconsciously, based on your profile info. Gamification + Community is like Peanut Butter + Jelly. It just works. It has for decades. You don't see it, because you don't need it. It has zero affect on you.

We don't need to convince you or to get your help with moderation. So I'm explaining it because you asked. But you won't believe it's true. Nobody believes anything if they've already made up their mind. And that's okay, great even.

We're grateful enough just for your contributions (of which there are many). So thank you! Honestly, if the whole community was like you, then yeah, we could be done with this gamification thing. There wouldn't be any reason to motivate folks. But, since we're doing it, we'll have a little fun with it and show our appreciation to those who contribute. But yeah, it would be so much easier if "Thanks" did it. So I do that too. I guess I already did in this post (thanked you) without even thinking about it. I guess I say "Thanks" at the end of almost every single post, just because I'm so grateful that you all are even here.

Thanks!

Naomi,

Thanks for your reply. If I know the answer to OP's question, I do answer right away. However, in many cases after doing so, I discover that another person who is a designated 'answerer' (not you) has beat me to the punch, and already answered the OP's question within minutes of the question being posted! Yet, I notice that many answers in this and other SQL forums remain unmarked as answer, for weeks in some cases. Even though some of the answers, in my opinion appear to be correct answers.

I know what impression that suggests to me, but what impression does it suggest to other?

Do 'answerers' earn achievement points for marking posts as answers? If not, maybe they should, so it give them equal or greater incentive to mark posts as answers as it does for them to provide the answers themselves. That way, more posts will get marked as answers and those of us who haven't yet earned hundreds of thousands of achievement points have a chance to earn a few for ourselves.

Hello Phil,

I am moderator in 4 SQL Server forums and believe it or not, it's a lot of work. I often spend several hours on Sunday morning to review post. And I also try to spend time to write answers on open question, that takes also time.

Do 'answerers' earn achievement points for marking posts as answers?

No and I don't see a reason why they should? It would may be only lead to "mark as much as you can" to get many points, even if it's not the right answer.

In former version of forum software we received 5 points per post, independent if it's a helpful post or not. That was change, because of the same reason.

BTW, for "helpful post vote" you still get 5 points, and ... see my previous post.

Hi Phil,

I agree with Olaf. You don't want to give points to the person for marking the answer.

On the other hand, anyone can propose a good answer to be marked as answer and anyone can vote on a helpful answer. So, if you see an answer you think it's a good one, don't hesitate to propose it as an answer (you can unpropose if you changed your mind or clicked by mistake).

You can also vote answers as helpful when you see good helpful answers.

I think given your experience with SQL Server you're qualified to be a moderator in this and several other SQL Server forums. Ed can invite you to become a moderator here.

As for beating you on an answer - yes, the simpler the question, the more responses it normally gets, this is understandable.

Thanks for your reply, Olaf. And thank you for all the work you put into managing SQL forums. I appreciate you and all the other 'veterans' of the SQL forums sharing your knowledge and I'm learning a lot from reading all the posts and answers.

It just puzzles me that the 'experts', who are moderators/answerers/etc would be spending much time at all answering basic questions in the 'Getting Started with SQL Server' forum, within minutes of the OP question. It seems a better investment of that valuable expertise would be in helping Questioners with more advanced problems or reviewing appropriateness of other posts to 'mark as answer'.

I enjoy giving back to the community by helping others less experienced than me in these forums. I also hope that I could help 'lighten the load' for you and all the other experts by providing assistance in areas where you are spread too thin or don't have enough time.

Ok, now I understand the rationale for not giving points for 'mark as answer'.

I will try to assist more with 'vote as helpful' or 'propose as answer' if I see helpful posts.

Hello Naomi,

Thanks! I was involved deeply in good-discontinued Microsoft Newsgroups when Geoff N. Hiten, Hilary Cotter, Tibor Karaszi, Linchi Shea and others were all around and then Microsoft decided to shut it down. Then we moved to Microsoft Forums (here) but then I changed my role as a database engineer for a private bank (10.000+ employee). We were too busy in the bank to do community work here and there and that was the time also when my SQL MVP title was dropped.

Even though I haven't given up on blogging since then, I haven't had spare time to write in the forums till recently. Now, I'm on a different role and have enough time again to be back! It's great to be back indeed!

The computer you want to remote to, the host has to be Windows 10 Pro. On that machine right click start choose System, make a note of the Computer name, then click the Advanced system settings link. On the Remote tab make sure Allow remote connections to this computer is selected, and check what users can access.

On the PC you want to connect from, start search for remote, open Remote Desktop Connection, enter the Computer name of the first machine and connect, enter the username and password.

SMS_SRS Reporting Services

A little background

I completed a SCCM restore using the backed up site data base.  I didn't mess with the reporting database at all left them in place just replacing the site database.  Now I am getting the following message in the monitoring.

Site Component Manager failed to install this component on this site system.

Solution: Review the previous status messages to determine the exact reason for the failure. Site Component Manager will automatically retry the installation in 60 minutes. To force Site Component Manager to immediately retry the installation, stop and restart Site Component Manager using the Configuration Manager Service Manager.

I also noticed when I click on reporting and try to click on my hyperlinks http://servername/reports and https://servername/reportserver I get the following error.

The version of the report server
database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The
found version is '162'. The expected version is '163'.

Please let me know if you have seen this.  Thanks.

This means that you are having SQL issues and need to fix your SSRS / SQL install. This has nothing to do with CM12.

Tips for getting your questions answered more efficiently in the forum

Thank you for posting in TechNet forums. If this is the first time for you to ask questions in TechNet, here are several tips to help you monitor your thread and resolve the issue efficiently.

Before you ask a question:
========================

1.Compose a good title which can summarize your question concisely and clearly.

A good title should be with a stand-out topic and the certain error message or the obvious symptom of the issue. Make sure to be brief, you don't have to put all the details in the title.

You can write like "What happens on your PC with what error message or error code", or "what is a", or "How do I implement or realize something", or "What keeps on doing something weird" …

Good examples:
-Updates are available - Downloading updates stuck on 0% for 2 weeks since Anniversary update released.
-Skype for Business Mac Client doesn't record correct time in Outlook Conversation History
-How to identify system is going to which sleep states?
-Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting after upgrading to Windows 10
Bad examples:
-Anniversary Update Failed
-BitLocker encryption in Event Viewer
-Windows 10 problem
-Recently restored Windows 10

2.Provide all the necessary information in your initial post including symptom, environment, recent changes, error message, screenshots for the issue, and the steps you have done for troubleshooting.

3.Choose proper sub-forum according to your question category. For example, if your question is related to Windows setup, please choose Installation, Setup and Deployment forum (see the picture below):

After you ask a question:
========================

Please closely monitor and follow up in time on your thread. This includes not only respond to other's clarification, but also actively share the testing result and what you found more on the issue. When you do this, your thread also benefits others who are experiencing the similar issue. Here are more things for making a good communication and answering the question in the forum.

1.Subscribe the Email notifications from forumsup@microsoft.com

When communities, MVPs, or our support engineers post a reply or propose an answer to your question, an automatic email reminder will be sent to your registered mailbox in TechNet. We strongly recommend you to subscribe the alerts in My Settings page, and check the latest update in email.

Here's a picture for configuring Alert emails in My settings page.

2.Follow up your threads

If the issue is resolved by no matter others or yourself:
We'd like to receive your positive feedbacks. If you are the original poster, it is highly recommended to click "Mark as Answer" on the helpful post/reply whether from yourself, a Microsoft employee, an MVP, or the community in general. In doing so, it will benefit all community members who face similar issues. Your contribution is highly appreciated.

If the issue persists after you try the provided suggestions:
It's better to answer the clarified questions and provide the useful information you found during the test, so others can do further troubleshooting based on the information.

SCOM Project Plan

Hi

I have been tasked with managing a SCOM implementation and configuration for my company.  However I need to be able to define what skillset is required and how long it is required for.  Currently we have very little SCOM expertise and they are not available to asist in building the baseline plan.  Does anyone have a MS Project plan that they are able and willing to share to give me a starting point.  Anything would be appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

How big is your environment? How many servers will you monitor? How many remote sites will you monitor? Any systems in untrusted domains? Clustered RMS? Standing up SCOM can be easy, it's a very, very steep learning curve in learning how to configure it, modify monitors, create new ones, etc. To deploy, you'll need a Windows server guru and possibly a SQL server admin.

Also note that your project plan doesn't count the day-to-day maintenance & support. If you have a big, complex environment (like ours with 4000 agents in 20 locations and a bunch of untrusted domains), there are 2 people (including myself) that directly support SCOM.

Basically I no idea what we have currently.  What I need initially (if possible) is a baseline plan showing the areas that need to be addressed and in what order and I can expand the plan accoridngly as I get more information.  We do have SCOM SME resource but it is currently unavailable to me.  What I need initially is to produce a Project Plan in the first instance which I can then use as a baseline for my initial planning discussions.

Windows 10 Bitlocker Encryption Time Should Improve with Creators Update

Microsoft customers using Bitlocker and Windows 10 have noticed that the encryption process takes considerably longer than it did with previous versions of Windows, including Windows 7. Microsoft explains that the longer processing time is due to new features added to Windows 10 (explanation HERE).

The process is expected to improve with the release of Windows 10 Creators Update – which is rumored to become available in April 2017.

New RAM IDEA for the desktop and laptop USING THE SSD NEW STANDARD

with the new awesome ribbon strips with the nice flap on them and ram drives don't it seem smart to change the ram socket on the motherboard to one of them and use the ram drives that are 250 gigs large to what the computer uses as system ram

saving you massive amount of mother board space heat and resources used to make the motherboard

and finally getting rid of that ram size bottleneck for the laptop

I opened my HP omen yesterday and I was impressed with the new ribbon sockets and think they could be used to changed the old RAM SOCKET standard and that one 1980s motherboard design

giving you massive amounts of ram to laptops desktops even cell phones

the 16 gig cap has been from windows NT 4 version and now has tech in place that can replace old stuff

seems that it wouldn't be hard changing the old BIOS and system hooks that for that system

you could even scale down a SSD to fit in a cell phone giving the user way more space and resources

RAM drives also offer better security less heat

the omen motherboard was super tiny and the new flip top ribbon dongles are very handy

can you guys imagine how good your INTEL or AMD would run with MASSIVE AMOUNT of threads AND say (example)260 gigs of SYSTEM ram instead of the 1990's 16 gigabyte I know that server motherboard BIO'S uncap that limit with how much ram they can hold TIME for my motherboard to have that same STANARD

very impressed with the omens performance with the Foot print FACTOR can you imagine how much space you would loose hooking ONE SSD style ram stick to one socket AT which YOU still get the same OR MORE Paths to and from ram with a new THOUGHT OUT RAM CIRCUT PATH ETCHING

using intune and vpn service

So just a question i am trying to figure out or even suggestions on if this is even the best route of things as well.

company wants to take a look into Microsoft Intune to do the protecting of company data on devices and what not. but i had a question of using intune and vpn as well.

so currently using the MPLS for vpn access into the company so no real correlation to the company itself ya know, working on setting up the DA so we can then control the vpn stuff of things

but the Question here, so what if intune is set up and you can only save to certain locations and such, then you go and vpn into the company, will this then allow you to save where ever you want again. What would be used the intune profile or stricly the VPN profile. 99 percent of people will still prolly only use there computer from the company anyways and rarely on there personal devices i just dont see that happening too often but im sure it does. now a bunch of people do have phone and devices from the company so i know that it will happen

just maybe this has been tried and done before. so if anyone has any knowledge into this.

thanks

Can you please change the thread type from "General Discussion" to Question so that it can be closed off properly when it is answered.

I'm sorry but I'm not 100% clear on what you are asking. Perhaps you could answer these questions to clarify exactly what you are trying to do with Intune:

1. What exactly do you intend to manage with Intune?

2. What devices will you manage?

3. "so what if intune is set up and you can only save to certain locations and such"

How are you expecting to achieve this and what locations are you referring to

4. "What would be used the intune profile or stricly the VPN profile"

What do you mean by this?

Have anybody worked on retrieving data of child entities, if so can you help me with that?

I have created a Domain Based attribute in child table and trying to retrieve data by setting property

it doesn't return any row counts but when I use same code with any other attribute instead of domain attribute it return counts of records i.e.

Anyone who have worked on it, your answer would be appreciable.

SCCM Discovery Full discovery polling schedule for particular Active Directory Containers

Hello,

Is it possible to add a customized feature in Discovery in future versions of SCCM? i.e. In the mentioned discovery methods can there be an option to run a full discovery on particular Active Directory Containers

•Active Directory Group Discovery
•Active Directory System Discovery
•Active Directory User Discovery

For e.g. I take example for Active Directory Group Discovery, in that i have mentioned the below OUs,if i use "Full discovery polling schedule" then it becomes effective on all below mentioned OUs, so i just need to run this option for an particular OU mentioned in my Active Directory Group Discovery i.e. LDAP://OU=ABC,DC=Contoso,DC=com to retrieve a information immediately for that particular OU in SCCM operational Purpose.

LDAP://OU=ABC,DC=Contoso,DC=com
LDAP://OU=XYZ,DC=Contoso,DC=com
LDAP://OU=123,DC=Contoso,DC=com

Hello Torsten,

Scenario is there are total 21,000 machines are reporting to an SCCM server, i add new OU for discovery which consists of 500 machines, since discovery for AD is set to run for every 7 days, but i want SCCM to make a quick note of OU changes for these 500 workstations via discovery, but i need wait for 7 days for full discovery.

Delta Discovery consider only below changes,

1.New computers or users added to Active Directory
2.Changes to basic computer and user information
3.New computers or users that are added to a group
4.Computers or users that are removed from a group

5.Changes to System group objects

so if i am not wrong, delta discovery doesn't consider OU changes? thats why i raised this question in forum, Is it possible include an option to run a full discovery on particular Active Directory Containers in future versions of SCCM?  to avoid unnecessary running of  full discovery for all OU's in mentioned in Discovery

Thanks,

You can run Full Discovery but it consider other OUs which are already participated\added in discovery. SCCM directly querying AD only.. So no harm. We are running 100K+ clients not faced any issues. You can manually trigger.. That's what my suggestion

Secondary Server Fails to pass authentication

We have two ADFS servers in our enviroment. The primary works for all trust authentications for all of our trusts.

The secondary server on the other hand, works for all of our trusts except for one. It appears this occurred after the internal cert performed it's auto renewal.

Logs show all the syncs are working properly, as far as I can tell all the certs that exist on the primary server also exist on the secondary server.

Any ideas on how I can figure out why this one particular trust fails on the secondary server?

Hiya,

Maybe that particular trust is using a encryption certificate, which is only located on the primary server currently?

Have you checked that trust configuration may be it is using certificate which is unknown for the secondary

Hi Doug,

Another possibility is that it is the client that is failing against the second server.

Do you have a fallback certificate configured - and was it updated when you last changed the Service Communication certificate?

Are your servers in a farm, and is the farm synchronizing?

Is the same service account used to run the ADFS service on both servers?

Good Luck!

Shane

As far as I can tell all the ADFS certs that exist on the primary are on the secondary.

And when I mean it doesn't work instead of authenticating and moving forward to the ADP site after authentication users are presented a page asking them to select which trust they want to authenticate to. During testing if I select any of the trusts from the drop down it will authenticate and pass on except for ADP. It straight up fails.

Does that page work on both servers?

Can you authenticate from any of the relying parties on both servers?

Reply:
Yes both servers the page works. And I'm able to sign into all trusts on both servers except for the ADP trust.

Hi,

If you open Event Viewer and go down to the ADFS Administrative log, which error are you getting on the server that fails, when you try to log in?

Kind Regards

Server is rebooting or shutdown by itself after OS boots up completely

We have a DELL PowerEdge 710 server running Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition OS This machine has Power Vault MD3200 DAS box connected through 6gbp SAS connector The issue with this machine is that it is rebooting or shutdown by itself after OS boots up completely and stays on the login screen for an indefinate time. Action was taken so far; We have taken a backup of data on it We have disconnected DAS box and tried to run this server We have run physical memory test and complete hardware test on all of its components We have raised a call with DELL and they have thoroughly checked and confirmed that there is no issue with any of its hardware. On the OS side We have checked its system and application events, as per this shutdown command is coming from NT Authority/System user. We have checked windows patches on this server We have run a full virus scan using Trend Micro and also ran a MS MRT for malware detection. However, came up empty. Please suggest how else would we try an troubleshoot this issue.

Thank you! Sandeep for your reply.

We started our OS related troubleshooting from system and application event logs, as I mentioned earlier in my comments. We did not see any concrete evidence to point this issue to a something.

Do you have any other solution to this, may be any other places in the OS where I can find my issue?

If you tested the hardware and you didn't detect any issue, your problem should be related with Windows license.

Double check if when you logg on safe mode the server won't reboot. If not you have license issue. If auto-reboot on safe mode probably you have hardware issue.
