Req: DBA's out of the box tasks or non regular activities
Hello,
As a DBA my regular activities include
1. Monitoring overnight jobs that are backups, purge, archive and all agent jobs and alerting teams and fixing job issues
2. Monitoring and Improving performance (index rebuilds, update statistics, reviewing maintenance plans, execution plans)
3. Monitoring storage on all instances
4. Controlling access to databases and servers
5. Provide support for Dev teams
6. Check for windows updates and sql server Upgrades
7. Browse through forums, articles and attend sqlmeetups
However my management is revamping the current processes and wants to incorporate new strategy's across the board and wants individuals to send their Wildly Incorporated Goals that are not regular activities.
I am interested to know how DBA's at their work places are setting their WIGs that would improve their companies profit margins by thinking out of the box apart from doing their regular jobs.
DBA's need your valuable thoughts.
Thanks a ton

No guarantees. Give the followings a try :
1/ Uninstall any anti-virus programs you have and try Windows Update again. You can always reinstall the program after 14393.953 is installed successfully.
2/ you can go to Microsoft Update Catalog and manually download the KB.
Here are he direct download links............
To manually download:
Download KB4013429 from Microsoft Update Catalog
Download KB4013418 from Microsoft Update Catalog

Thanks. The machine tried updating on its own again today and, again, failed. How do i find out why its failing? There's no indication something's wrong until I restart and the update is rolled back.
I have no anti-virus running except Windows Defender. I'll try turning that off but i've never had to worry about that before.

No, don't do anything with Windows Defender. Let it be. it's not the culprit.
I have no other suggestions for you except the Microsoft Update Catalog direct download link I posted earlier.

Surely there's some kind of log being written that records the error it's running into.

There is a new cumulative update KB4015438.
Does your Windows Update offer it to you ?
It might solve the problem you have with KB4013418.
Other than that, I really have no other suggestion for you.

One more thing..............
Windows 10 will allow you to uninstall the most recent cumulative update.
If KB4013418 is your most recent one, you can uninstall it this way..............
Open Programs and Features > top left, click Viewed Installed Updates > wait for it to load > scroll all the way down to Microsoft Windows heading.
IF KB4013418 is the most recent cumulative update on the list, then RIGHT click at it > click Uninstall.
When that done, go to Windows Update > click check for updates. See if newer update KB4015438 is available

I think this update has killed my Lenovo IdeaPad Z570. Windows 10 64 bit hangs when loading (before the logon screen).
I can get in to Safe Mode after a couple of hard shut downs but all attempts at recovery so far have failed since the system cannot create a restore point. This includes using the recovery menu to re-install the OS. Attempts to uninstall the most recent update fails for the same reason!
I'm up to 2 days of trying to fix this now.

Help!
1. If you do System Image Bregularly, and if you did one before this update , do a system image recovery.
I won't bore you with the "how-to" since you know how to go to Safe Mode, and System Restore.
2. If the above cannot be done, then I would suggest that you use another computer, use the Media Creation Tool link to down load the current Creators Update iso file > burn it to bootable media (DVD or USB) > take it to your IdeaPad and do a Clean Install.
If you need instructions on Clean Install, please post back.

For info, my OS build is 14393.693 (Windows 10 Home).
After another "fun" night, I have truly exhausted all other recovery options. Most of these progress almost to completion then barf right at the end! The OS is now refusing to show me installed updates claiming "No updates are installed on this computer". Grrr.
I don't have a disk image to fall back on. This is not an omission I will make again! I will perform a clean install.

windows 2012 terminal server problem
We have a windows 2012 RDP terminal server. When our client number is over 17 ,then it does not allow new connections.
We have 50 CAL licenses. I converted some licenses to user CAL and some licences device CAL.
But Our server gives "Failed to create KVP sessions string. Error Code 0x8007007A" error. and it does not allow new connections.
Does someone have any idea what might cause this error? Thanks!
Reply:
Hi,
Please make sure you have not configured a maximum connection limit. Two places to check this are:
1. Session Collection Properties--on broker, Server Manager -- RDS -- Collections -- <collection> -- Properties pane -- Tasks -- Edit Properties -- Load Balancing tab, Session limit for all servers should be set to 999999
2. Group policy--on your RDSH servers, open admin command prompt and run the following commands:
gpresult /h gpresult.htm
start gpresult.htm
Please examine the output and look for Limit number of connections or similar under path Computer Configuration\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services \Remote Desktop Session Host\ Connections
If you find that the above group policy setting has been set, please edit the applicable Group Policy Object and set the Limit number of connections setting to Not Configured, and then run gpupdate /force in admin command prompt on your RDSH servers.
Please reply back with your results after considering the above, whether positive or negative.
Thanks.

Synaptic touchpad driver keeps being autoupdated in Windows 10 Home
Version 1609
Build 14393.1198
Laptop HP Pavilion dv6-1450er
Windows 10 keeps autoupdating Synaptic touchpad driver after every reboot. Even despite I selected option "I don't want to receive driver updates automatically" in Advanced system settings > Hardware > Device installation settings. The reason why I install earlier version of driver is that Synaptic stopped supporting my model of laptop. Recent version of their driver doesn't work properly on Windows 10. Earlier version of driver works good. I really want to decide which driver is better for my laptop especially when Windows is wrong in this question.
I am struggling very hard not to use offensive words in this post. But the fact is that I am extremely angry after I have lost 3 hours attempting to install correct Synaptic driver for my touchpad.

Windows 8 shut down unexpectedly
Hello
I am using Windows 8 Enterprise evaluation version. But I got one serious error that is Windows 8 shut down unexpectedly.
Suppose if I play music file , during playing music file , it automatically shut down. Another scenario is that suppose I am browsing internet , it automatically shut down or sometimes I do not do anything around few minutes then it automatically shut down.
I tried many solutions from forums but problem not solved.
Is there any solution for shut down problem ?

To see the cause I have to take a look at the dumps with the Debugging Tools for Windows.
Please start the Windows Explorer and go to the folder C:\Windows\Minidump. Next, copy the dmp files to your desktop, zip all dmp into 1 zip file and upload the zip file to your public Skydrive [1] folder and post a link here.
If you can't see dmp files, make sure your Windows is configured correctly [2][3] to generate dumps.
If you want to analyze them your own, check those videos [4][5]

I've replied to your own topic. In your case the ralink wireless driver (netr28x.sys) is the cause.

Hi!
I got a new laptop last Christmas, and since then I have experienced this problem. The computer shuts down unexpectedly, like in a power loss (but working with fully charged battery, with A/C or both). It doesn't restart. I sent the PC to the technical service and they found every thing ok.
In the event log I always see the following errors:
Event 41, Kernel-Power: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
Event 6008, EventLog: The previous system shutdown at XXXXX on XXXX was unexpected.
I uploaded the errors here: http://sdrv.ms/10BH08W
On the other hand, I cannot find the folder C:\Windows\Minidump, though the system is configured to generate dumps (to %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP).
My PC details are (more on the SkyDrive folder):
- ASUS K55VD-SX441H
- CPU Intel Core i7-3630QM, 2.4Ghz
- Motherborth ASUSTeck K55VD
- Bios: K55VD.408 (01/31/2013)
- Microsoft Windows 8 (6.2) 64-bit
Can you help me? Thanks a lot.

Your laptop may be overheating. By design they will suddenly shut down in such a situation. Laptops are prone to this because of limited room for ventilation. Make sure the ventilation slots are free of dust or in any other way obstructed. Place the laptop on a hard surface (not your lap or a couch cushion) and/or ideally get a cooling pad.

I really don't think it's a problem of heat. In first place, the laptop is new, so no dust can be there. In second, I'm am monitoring the temp. and it's always between 45-55º C (just ocasionally til 60-62º C). And even though, the system shuts down, randomly and unexpectedly. It might also shut down after start up...
Thanks anyway.

When you say "shutdown," are you referring to a normal, controlled shutdown sans any warning, or a "it seemed like someone pulled the plug" type of shutdown? Does your shutdowns happen after about 20 minutes or so?
You do realize that the Windows [7, 8, 8.1] Enterprise evaulations versions will automatically shutdown without any wrning after about 20 minuties if they are not activated.
In all cases, an activated verson of Windows [7, 8, 8.1] will contiune to work normally for 90 days. With the client editions, you then rearm ONCE for an additional 90 days. After your activation period is expired, Windows--the evaluation versions by design will automatically (and without any warning) shutdown.
------------------------------------
Reply:
Sorry for not being clearer, Yes, it is like someone has just pulled the plug when there is no battery in. The shutdowns happen a couple of times a day without any warning.
I am not using an evaluation version of Windows 8 but a normal copy that came installed on the laptop.
What other information can I provide to help resolve this?
Thank you so much for your help.

Getting full protection from viruses and worms would be easy, if MS really wanted to.
Hi everybody.
I'm a software developer living and working in Italy and I would just like to point out that, in my opinion, there is only one "elementary" way we could get rid of ransomware, viruses, worms and the like.
The only solution I see consists in re-arranging the operating system in such a way that any third-party app installed should only be able to write data to the same app folder or to its sub-folders. In this way it would be impossible for the app to do any kind of damage to the operating system or to any other app, simply because it would be unable to have access to any files and folders located elsewhere. This is what I call serious sandboxing.
The Data folder you find in the latest versions of Windows is extremely counterproductive, not only because it allows an app located elsewhere to have access to another folder (i.e. the Data folder), but also because it makes an app difficult to transport to another PC. On the contrary, if you save all of your data to your app path, you can move your app and data files to another computer by copying and pasting a single folder.
Please don't tell me that the apps on the MS Store already allow you to do so, because I mean something different: legacy Win32 apps should be able to run provided that they save their data to the app folder/subfolders and do not try to have access to other folders or run other executables.
Customers will never renounce the possibility to buy customized software developed by independent programmers. That's why I think Windows 10 S is doomed to fail. If MS really cared about cybersecurity, they could just adopt the sandboxing strategy I have described, without forcing anybody to rely on the MS Store only.

Office 365 password issue - solution
Ever had the problem where hosted exchange keeps asking you for your username\password?
Here is the solution that work -
Use your activesync username, not email address and not domain login. Start Outlook and when it prompts you for the password, select other user and enter your ActiveSync name - typically starts with the server or hosting domain followed by a \ then the username.
example: Username: Exc091\john.doe_tempeaz.com
Remember to put in your login password and check the "remember password" box, then hit enter on the keyboard.
Works every time!
You may need to contact the hosting provider for the activesync username - unless you have admin rights.
Thanks,
DC

Please help - my work backlog is mounting!

Where did you try to save your documents (*.docx, *.xlsx, etc.)?
Local drive, USB flash memory, NAS, or other device?

As .docx and .xlsx on local drive.
These were all files I have used for a long time and periodically update.
Thanks!

Thank you for your reply.
Let me ask one more:
Is it normal when you open it? i.e. it takes long only when you save it?

I'm having the exact same problem. Noticed it for the first time ever today, and it is now pervasive. 100% of the time I attempt to use the "save as" function on Word 2016 or Excel 2016 the system locks up. My only means of correction is to use the task manager to force the closure of Word or Excel, which always has a red "Not Responding" message by it in task manager.
This has never happened before today. I wonder if it might be related to the Windows 10 Creators Update that I installed yesterday?

Found the answer to my problem on a Surface forum:
http://www.surfacetablethelp.com/2017/04/office-wordexcel-save-as-dialog-box-hangs-in-windows-10-creators-update.html
It turns out it's an incompatibility between the Windows 10 Creators Update and Malwarebytes. As an interim measure you turn off Malwarebytes monitoring of MS Word and MS Excel and the problem goes away. Hopefully Malwarebytes will post a patch shortly.

Edit by anonymous user in list sharepoint 2013 get authenticate!!!!!???
Hi every body,
I have a strange problem with anonymous access in my sitecollection in sharepoint 2013(in all sites collection were visual upgraded to 2013 or sitecollections that were created in farm 2013 from the begining )
I grant to anonymous user to see Entire web site.
I disabled this feature in site collection :"Limited-access user permission lockdown mode"
I created custom sharepoint list in my site and set all permission for anonymous user (check all permission can get)
when call this list by anonymous user creates items in list normally and without any problem but in editing item:
anonymous user can edit items that were created by authenticated user but he can't edit items that were created by anonymous user I mean in last situation the window for authenticating shows.
the above problem does not exist in sitescollections that are in visual sharepoint template 2010 I mean there weren't upgraded visually.

I deep in my problem and I want to say more details.
I thought the anonymous user steps in every page corrupts it.
you assume this items in the list:
- item_createdbyInternaluser_1
- item_createdbyInternaluser_2
- item_createdbyExternaluser_1
- item_createdbyExternaluser_2
when you call this list by anonymous user you can edit 1 and 2 but you can't edit 3 and 4.(the authentication window appears) you assume to edit 1.
the items turns to below list:
- item_createdbyInternaluser_1_editedbyAnonymoususer
- item_createdbyInternaluser_2
- item_createdbyExternaluser_1
- item_createdbyExternaluser_2
after that, you can't edit 1,3 and 4 but you can edit 2.Why?!!!!!this is very strange!!!!

Peace of mind w/ 10
Reminder: Nobody running Windows 10 was infected by a ransomware worm today. It doesn't work on Windows 10.

Although Windows 10 may not be vulnerable via SMB route, surely it would still be vulnerable to the initial entry vector?
"We haven't found evidence of the exact initial entry vector used by this threat, but there are two scenarios we believe are highly possible for this ransomware family:
- Arrival through social engineering emails designed to trick users to run the malware and activate the worm-spreading functionality with the SMB exploit
- Infection through SMB exploit when an unpatched computer can be addressed in other infected machines"
So thinking the email downloading the exe onto a Windows 10 system would still work? and the affect downstream systems if they were vulnerable?

I apologize, but I do not agree with you. In my opinion, Iturbu.com is more revealing in this direction. I suggest that you write all the pluses Chetu Inc. And I'll try to argue with everything in return.
