Power Tips for Microsoft Edge

Power Tips for Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is the new browser on Windows 10, and also the default browser. Microsoft Edge gives you new ways to find stuff, read—and write—on the web, plus help from Cortana where you need it.

Note: If you're running web apps that need ActiveX controls, you can continue to use Internet Explorer 11.

Show the favorites bar and import favorites from another browser:

  • Show the favorites bar: select More actions...Settings> Turn on Show the favorite bar
  • Import favorites from another browser: select More actions ... > Settings> Click Import favorites from another browser> follow the wizard instructions to select the browser to import favorites

Configure your home page

Select More actions ...> Settings, under Open with there are four opinions you can choose to configure home page: Start Page, New tab page, Previous pages and A special page or pages.

In order to change your home page, you can select A specific page or pages, choose one of the default options or select Custom to enter the URL of another page you'd like to see each time you open the browser, and then select the plus button.

Clear browsing data

Select More actions ...> Settings, Under Clear browsing data, choose what you want to clear.

This feature help to clear following kinds of files when suffering online:

  • Browsing history: The list of websites you've visited including your frequently visited sites.
  • Cookies and saved website data: Information that websites store on your PC to remember your preferences, such as sign-in information or your location.
  • Cached data and files: Copies of pages, images, and other media content stored on your PC.
  • Download history: The list of files you've downloaded from the web. This only deletes the list, not the actual files that you've downloaded under System drive\users\[your user name]\Downloads.
  • Form data: Information that you've entered into forms, such as your email, registration form or shipping address.
  • Passwords: Passwords that you've saved for login websites.
  • Media licenses: Digital Rights Management content licenses.
  • Pop-up exceptions: The list of websites that you have allowed to display pop-ups.
  • Location permissions: The list of websites that you have allowed to grab their location.
  • Full screen permissions: The list of websites that you have allowed to automatically open in full-screen mode.
  • Compatibility permissions: The list of websites that you have allowed to automatically open in Internet Explorer.

Type address directly in address bar like in Internet Explorer

It's easy to get traditional address bar back, just click on the blank area besides the Refresh button:

Clear certain browsing history

Select the Hub> Select History> right-click the history website and choose how you would like to delete this history:

  • Delete this record history.
  • Delete all record history related the domain.

What's more, you can also click Clear all history, then follow the wizard to choose what you want to clear, for example Browsing data, cookies and saved website data, cached data and files, passwords and so on.

The location of Microsoft Edge cookies

You can uncheck Hide protected OS files in Folder option and find the location of Microsoft Edge cookies under following folders:

%SystemDrive%\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\#!001\MicrosoftEdge\Cookies

%SystemDrive%\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\#!002\MicrosoftEdge\Cookies

%SystemDrive%\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\Cookies

Set up Microsoft Edge to use the Enterprise Mode site list

How to use TRIM with Microsoft Office EXCEL 2013

Hi I am Arun from India, I want to know how to use TRIM option with Microsoft EXCEL 2013.

Reply:

You can use the TRIM function to remove all spaces from a text string except single spaces between words.

In other words, TRIM will remove leading spaces at the beginning of a text string, trailing spaces at the end of a text string, and it will reduce multiple spaces within a text string to single spaces.

If you have a text value in cell A2, the formula =TRIM(A2) in another cell, for example B2, will return the result of the above.

Here is an example. B2 contains the formula =TRIM(A2) and B3 the formula =TRIM(A3).

Hi Prasad- my first guess is you're trying to initiate the workflow using a system account. Otherwise it's probably a permissions issue. See the following link for various troubleshooting:

Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit upgrade for Windows 8 Pro- Start Menu on Right click will not open and Cortana won't open

I have 4 computers running Windows 10 Pro, upgrades from Windows 7.0 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro. So far two of the computers have had the same problem. Both the Start Button Menu and Cortana will not open. I have found a solution on the Internet but no solution from Microsoft and no software updates that fixes it. The solution I found that works is the following from http://www.bidnessetc.com/49429-microsoft-windows-10-start-menu-cortana-taskbar-not-working-heres-fix/:

Step 1: Right-click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the context menu.

Step 2: Type Powershell in Command Prompt and press Enter.

Step 3: Paste the following text in the Powershell window and press Enter.

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Wait for the command to run and ignore the red error prompts if they arise. The Start Menu should be operational now.

Search and Cortana malfunctioning can be attributed to a corrupted search index database in most cases. To fix it, all you need to do is delete and rebuilt the Search Index. To do this, head to the Control Panel. Locate the Indexing Options utility and launch it.

Reply:
another fix that works:     Reboot in "Safe Mode," then log into windows, then restart

How to do this when Start menu and Cortana aren't working:

  1. Right-Click on the Widows icon in the lower left of the desktop screen.
  2. Hover over Shut down or sign out,
  3. Move your mouse to the right and hover over (but do not click) Restart.
  4. Press and hold the Shift button on the keyboard,
  5. While holding it down, Left-Click on Restart
  6. In the screen that eventually appears, choose Troubleshoot.
  7. In the next screen that appears, choose Advanced Settings,
  8. In the next screen that appears, choose Startup Settings,
  9. In the next screen that appears, left-click on Restart.
  10. The Startup Settings screen appears.
  11. Choose 5) Start in Safe Mode with Networking by pressing 5 or the F5 key.
  12. When your computer restarts, enter your password (your PIN will not work here).
  13. After a few seconds, a window will briefly flash open and then close.
  14. Start menu and Cortana have now been reset.
  15. Restart your computer as you normally would.
  16. When it restarts, everything should be normal - log in with your password (or PIN if you have one).

If you found this helpful, do something good for someone else.

Reply:

Good call in your last paragraph. I brought up the indexing options utility, Then clicked on "troubleshoot search and indexing" at the bottom of the window, Ticked on "Search or indexing is slowing down computer" (since no start button access slows me way down), Clicked next, then "try troubleshooting as administrator", and was rewarded with the following:

  • Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories ------- FIXED
  • When permissions on the Windows Search data directories are set incorrectly, the search service might not be able to access or update the computer's search index. This can result in slow searches or incomplete search results.

My previous post apparently doesn't work for everyone.

The query mentioned in above blog helps to find the long running jobs. When you say expected to run 5 minutes, its what the user expects and cannot be determined by MSDB rather than looking into previous schedules, so the option will be to look into long running ones.

You could also look into this one.

just trying to guide towards simple resolution ..

you can get avg time for a job from msdb..sysjobs with GROUP BY job name / id put the same in another temp table and create a job to alert you / group id when the next run is above the avg time from previous run .

please check if that works .

LOW-COST W10 LAPTOP

This is not advertising!  Just FYI.

I just know what it is like not to have a lot of available money to spend.  A these days even young school kids are expected to have computers... not easily affordable for all families.  I just happened to discover this article and it is FYI not, an advert.  I mean, even, the article itself is not advertising but, rather just informing.  That's my goal, also, just to make people aware.

Thank you for sharing, actually there are cool and cheap tablets out there which are running Windows 10 or they are ready to run Windows 10.

Windows 10 is cool, you just need a hardware to run it.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Yes, Win10 is certainly very cool!

And besides this particular unit, there is lots of gear & deals available & more coming, soon.  This is great for people needing new equipment.

You say "need hardware to run" it as if people (will) need to upgrade existing hardware to (be able to) run Windows 10... that is not necessarily true, @ all.  !st of all machines running 7 SP1 & 8.1 will certainly run Win10.  Also, there are heaps of reports of people running 10 quite nicely on old(er) & sometimes not very robust computers.  Changing hardware for Windows 10 will more often be a matter of choice than obligation.

There are several cases of people putting 10 successfully on machine several years old... including some that started their lives as XP & or Vista machines.

Powershell - Adding multiple users to vary groups

Hi Guys,

I am hoping one of you guru's can help. I am creating a script in powershell and i am stuck.

Scenario:

CSV (contains over 7000 rows): groupname, extensionattribute1

group1, 123456

group1, 987654

group2, 123456

group2, 987654

I was hoping there was a way that this could be scripted so that i could import the csv and add all ad users that match extensionattribute 1 to the group listed beside in the CSV.

I keep finding ways to add to a single group but not ways of adding multiple members to multiple groups.

Any help would be appreciated (with example code)

Many thanks in advance!

Kyra

Reply:

Sample pseudo-code:

Import-Csv MyCsvFile.csv | ForEach-Object {   "Search for all users that have extensionAttribute1 set to $($_.extensionAttribute1)"   "foreach user in this result set:"   " add the user to this group: $($_.groupname)"  }

You can use Get-ADUser to find users with a specific value in extensionAttribute1:

$value = "this is the value" Get-ADUser -LdapFilter "(extensionAttribute1=$value)"

Thanks Bill for that, truly grateful.

With a little bit of adapting, I think the following will work (haven't tested fully yet). However, i would now like to add a bit of checking. (feel free to comment on my method of coding - i am still a beginner, all constructive criticism welcome)

Below is what i have but where the comments are is where i would like the checking to take place. I was not sure if i could get it to check the groups members before or not?

Function SyncGroups
{
Write-Verbose -Message "Syncing Groups... " -Verbose

$csv = Import-Csv -Path $filePath

ForEach ($row in $csv){

    $CSVID = ($row.extensionAttribute1)
    $CSVGroup = ($row.GroupName)

if (#check to see if they need adding to the group listed next to them in the csv and if they do need adding...)
        Get-ADUser -Filter {(extensionAttribute1 -eq $CSVID)} -Properties extensionAttribute1 | select SamAccountName, extensionAttribute1;
        Add-ADGroupMember $csvGroup;
        Write-Verbose -message ($row.ID + " has been added to " + $row.CSVGroup) -Verbose}
    else
    {
    # Already a member of the group listed beside in csv - do nothing
    }
}

This is just a small part of quite an extensive set of functions so all variables link back to a central config file to make changes simple :)

As always, Thanks in advance.

Serious Privacy Issues with Windows 10

I have recently learned, via several sources, that the concept of USER PRIVACY is almost a foreign one with Windows 10. These sources had sufficient credibility for me to,as a matter of my personal policy, to delay installation of Windows 10 O.S. until such time as I feel an intelligent decision or resolution can be made or arrived at.

For instance, steps one might take to remove/avoid/eliminate unnecessary "Sharing" of my personal info, emails, files, notes, contacts, and content thereof are arcane to non-existent. I'm certainly no technician nor a computer whiz of any sort, and problems of that type are generally beyond me. I DO NOT use my computer for any unlawful purposes whatsoever, but I AM an old school hick, and a knot-head of the first magnitude, who takes privacy matters very seriously. Consequently, this is a "Deal Breaker", and if I can't feel that my very O.S. can be trusted I will continue with Windows 8.1.

So, what's up with this vital privacy concern of mine vs. Windows 10? Oh, and there is not a single paranoid bone in my hillbilly body.

If it is a deal breaker then you can consider the deal broken.  While there are ways to disable the "spying" it breaks most of win 10's functionality and breaks the terms of use you must agree to when you install win10 making them illegal.

Adprep encountered a Win32 error. Error code: 0x6ba Error message: The RPC server is unavailable.

I managed to resolve this issue myself but I would like to put the knowledge out there

I got the above error when joining a 2012 R2 Standard server to a 2003 Domain.

I found the following article which pointed me in the right direction, but didn't resolve it for me

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2737560

I verified that my NEtwork Service was properly configured to LogonAsAService

However, when I opened Windows Firewall it told me that IPNAT was using the network, so it couldn't be configured

I removed the Routing and Remote Access COnfiguration from my Domain Controller, and that allowed me to access the RPC server

No security from neighbors

Hello, my name is Patricia and I am having a problem with the neighbors cutting in on my internet and knocking me off.  Please help me.  When I go and change something in my firewall or security then all my devices are impacted.  I just want me and my devices to be able to use my internet.  I have a Laptop, notebook, 2 iPads, Smart phone, 2 Roku systems on 2 TV's and a wireless printer and they are all wireless.  What can I do?  I know the basics about computers but apparently I am a dummy when it comes to a password change or just would like to watch a show without being interrupted by the neighbor kid wanting to do his homework.

Unfortunately this group is for Windows Server security issues and your
problem is not a Windows Server issue. From the sounds of it your issue
really isn't a Windows issue at all, but your post would be more
appropriate for one of the Windows Client forums:

Windows 7 Home Premium - svchost.exe SYSTEM Using a lot of memory

I've been noticing a gradual increase in memory usage by both explorer.exe and various svchost.exe's. I'm not sure if this is considered "memory leak" or a form of virus. I have scanned my entire hard drive for viruses, trojan's, etc and I have kept my windows defender up-to-date. I have been gaming for a while and it was just recently that I received messages from the application that the system has ran out of memory or something along those lines. There have been a few instances where my laptop would just automatically shutdown during my games and even when I'm just doing a word document.

Any ideas/ help?

Hi,

I notice you are using Windows 7 64-bit. How many memory is there on Windows 7?

I suggest using Process Explorer to monitor the svchost.exe.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

All svchost.exe should be run under wininit.exe\services.exe. In there, you can see which program is related to svchost.exe.

Meanwhile, you can refer to the following article to improve the performance

There is just slightly less than 3Gb of ram. The hard drive is 320 Gb.

I've checked the sources of all of the svchost.exe's and they're all under: Computer/Acer/Windows/System32

I did a factory reset of my laptop yesterday and the problem still persists. So theoretically, the problem would not be a virus and it can't be a software issue. Would I be correct? Another thing I noticed is that when I have my battery plugged into the laptop, the quick sudden shutdown would occur much sooner than when I only use the a/c.

How to filter custom managed property with REST api

I'm using Oracle Database and table consist of Title,Description,Language columns. Using BCS and creating BDCM file, I'm able to get all the data from Oracle Database. I could make managed properties (owsCusTitle, owsCusDESCR,owsLanguage) and link this to the crawled property and everything is OK. Now in my application, I'm showing data using search rest API like this:

http://mk3.spha.com/sites/search/_api/search/query?rowlimit=5&selectproperties='owsCusTitle,owsCusDESCR'&sourceid='a3dcf0d0-a1fe-409e-bb84-f407fc4b6be2'&querytext='title:"man*"'

But there are many records with owsCusTitle column as blank. I don't want to show those records. Is there any way to filter custom managed property in the query itself ?

Here is an example of a query with sort using Rest api:

Use SkyDrive to upload collected files and post screen shot/picture. (Updated: 1/16/2012)

To help community members troubleshoot issues efficiently, sometimes we need to collect related files (such as Event logs, Network traces, Setup log files, Screenshots, etc.) to perform a specific analysis.

We can simply use SkyDrive, which is a free storage on Windows Live, it’s easy to store and share your files and photos with almost anyone. To make the steps clear, I would like to share the detailed steps for:

1. How to use  SkyDrive to upload collected files?
2. How to post screenshots or other pictures in forum threads?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

1.   How to use SkyDrive to upload collected files?

1)    Open the  SkyDrive site.

2)    In the Sign In page, if you own a Windows Live ID, please type your Windows Live ID and Password to sign in; Otherwise, you may click Sign Up to register a new one. See the following screen shot.

3)    After signing in Windows Live, click Create folder.

4)     Name the folder and edit permissions to share with relevant person.

Important Note: You can share the folder with Everyone if there is no private/sensitive information (such as the screen shot of a prompt error message). To so so, simply select the "Everyone (Public)" option in the "Share with" box. Please refer to the following screen shot:

However, for private information that you do NOT want to be accessed by everyone, it is recommended to share with specified individuals. To do so, you can expand the "Share with" box, choose the "Select people..." option, and then type their Live IDs in the Individual box. Please refer to the screen shot below:

5)    Drag the previously collected files directly to the Skydrive folder. For example:

6)    Click Upload.

7)    Click on the uploaded files and tell us the URL.

2.   How to post screenshots or other pictures in forum threads?

(This section updated on 1/16/2012 to reflect changes in Skydrive. Thanks to Jeeped on the Microsoft Answers forums)

1)   Please use the above method to upload the picture files in advance. Then, in your Skydrive space, Right Click the picture and select View Original. Press Ctrl + A, or Right Click and select Copy, to select it.

2)    Press Ctrl + C to copy this picture.

3)    Navigate to your post textbox, and press Ctrl + V, or Right Click and select Paste, to paste the picture there.

Then, the picture will be successfully inserted in that thread.

I did just try it with IE and was able to login and get to SkyDrive okay though. Not a biggie, just thought I'd mention it.
After installing the Upload Tool, the interface for uploading images to SkyDrive is very, very nice, just drag and drop. I like it.

Actually SkyDrive works in Firefox (SeaMonkey is based on FF), just the drag-and-drop interface doesn't work, only the normal browse-for-and-upload 5 files at a time interface. I like the drag-and-drop interface, is there a way to port it to Firefox?

If you have a lot of files to upload and don't want to use a 3rd party desktop client, the you may be pleased to hear that you can

upload data through as many different tabs as your machine can handle, and with as many browsers that you have installed.......and you can also use multiple machines as well.

I got these 3 bsod's in the space of 6 mins. I have just replaced the RAM, however, and not had a crash in over 30 mins. Can anyone advise if the RAM is the source of the issues before I buy some to replace the old?

Any help would be great!

But after that I am lost
create new folder I don't see a create folder like the screen shot?

The next screen shot is
share I don't find this box I found Add Folder and did that but no window to
share with: EVERYONE (PUBLIC)

There is a share on the page
but it's an address box I have to type something in I don't know what?

if I drag a file into the folder
I loose the SkyDrive page it changes into my computer and I am in the folder
the file is in that's great I see the file I want to put in the folder now what
all I can do is close the window there is no Upload or cancel buttons?

How are you going to get
these files?

I did add folder and it
creates a new folder

No dialog box that has Share
with

I clicked my new folder and
on rite side there is a share I typed everyone (public)

But I get error <o:p></o:p>

Dale (or any other moderator) - could you update the posting to:

1. show the current interface for SkyDrive?  There's nothing that looks like "Dale's SkyDrive" (or username's SkyDrive) in the current interface.  The following screen shot is what it looks like while I'm logged in and the 'new folder' link now appears below "SkyDrive | MSN".

2. explain in more detail how to get the URL for an uploaded file.  You wrote "Click on the uploaded files and tell us the URL".  But after I upload a zip file, then click on the file, IE offers to download the file.  Do you mean we should use the URL that's in IE's address bar at that moment?  One of the questions/replies above says "on the right side you see a box Internet address" but I don't see anything like that.  Right clicking on the file doesn't offer an option to copy the item's address.  A screenshot would help clarify this.

3. explain the difference / advantage of using the method described in your posting for inserting pictures by comparing it to the "insert image" button in the editing window for postings.  "Insert Image" is the right-most button in this screen shot of the top of the editing window:

4. add a reminder that this thread isn't the place to look for help on problems with a poster's computer.

Thanks, Mike

i'm running into some bsods on my new system... i read the dump files adn they seem to be pointing towards ntkrnlmp.sys... so my guess is some other driver might be the one to cause ntkrnlmp to crash... i think the answer is in the recent dumps

This one crash was Related to bcmwl6.sys Broadcom 802.11 Network Adapter wireless driver.  I would re-install the newest driver available and if no current driver is available you can install a previous driver in compatibility mode

To Run in compatibility mode do the following:

Right click the installer>properties>compatibility>chose OS

Thnx ZigZag!

I've got Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter installed, driver version = 5.100.82.112, driver date =26-10-2011.

Where do I find an update? Windows update says the device is working properly and the driver is up to date?

On internet I keep ending up on strange, unthrustworthy paysites looking for the most recent driver...

Do you know where to find it, of where to look for it?

------------------------------------
Reply:

You may want to look here. I dont know which specific mobo you have http://websearch.broadcom.com/search?q=broadcom+wireless+driver&btnG=Search&entqr=0&output=xml_no_dtd&sort=date%3AD%3AL%3Ad1&client=default_frontend&ud=1&search.x=0&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF-8&proxystylesheet=default_frontend&search.y=0

Even if there is no newer driver you need to re-install the current one in compatibility mode.  The current one was both not installed that way and probably corrupt (which is likely causing the crashes)

If more crashes occur please upload the DMP files

This a thread about Sky Drive. Click on Ask a Question at the top of this page to start your own thread.

Post the information which follows.

Please post a copy of your dumpfile as shared file to your Sky Drive with a link here.

What is your computer make and model? If not a branded computer what is your motherboard make and model?

Please download and run Driver View and upload a copy of the report it produces to your Sky Drive.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key. Microsoft Edge Browser (under windows 10) Compatability Issue signing in to "Go Ahead" Embedded Web Server

My operating system on several pcs has now migrated to Windows 10 with Microsoft Edge browser.  Using Edge to access devices on both my own LAN and remote networks I am (from any Windows 10 pc/ laptop)unable to log into devices that have the "Go Ahead" embedded server. I do get the opening page asking for user name and password, but unable to log in with Edge. This did not occur with earlier versions of IE under windows 7 and 8 and does not occur with Mozilla Firefox under Windows 10. I have tried the obvious and deleted all of the history, but problem persists. Possibly MS Edge has a compatibility problem with Go Ahead Server at present. Would be great to hear from any community member who has experienced the same problem or who has resolved the issue. Thanks all.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback about Windows Edge, since this issue is related to 3rd party software/program, we suggest you also post at Go Ahead Server FAQ, There you can get more effective suggestion by other experts who familiar with Go Ahead Server. Your understanding is highly appreciated.

Meanwhile, this thread will keep opening so other community member who has similar experience might provide suggestion. If you found your solution, you can also share with us here. If it is a widespread issue, it is very likely that "Go Ahead" will release patch for this issue.

Internet Explorer is still available for Windows 10 though.

Regards,

D. Wu

I would also recommend providing this feedback via the Windows Feedback app to directly alert the Edge development teams to the symptoms you are experiencing. Also feel free to provide as much detail as possible here in this thread as it can be used as a reference for the development teams or for others who are experiencing the same error.

SCEP Anti-Virus Exclusions for Direct Access 2012

Hi there,

We are going to use a Direct Access 2012 environment soon. At the moment we are configuring Antimalware Policies via SCCM 2012. I was wondering if there is an anti-Virus Exclusions list for Direct Access 2012 available yet?

Kind regards,

Sacha

Modify Add computer to an AD Group (MDT Deployment Script) for multiple groups

I'm looking at https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Add-the-current-computer-3759f02d but that seems to only work for adding a computer to s single security group.
I need to add a computer, during deployment, to several security groups.

In SCCM 2007 I have a VBS script, but can't seem to get it working properly in MDT 2013.
And since the script in the link above is for MDT deployment, it looks like a nicer way of doing it.

The variable ADGroup in CustomSettings.ini looks like it can support only one group, so something like ADGroup1, ADGroup2, etc would work great for me.
Just need to script to look at the increasing numbers till there are no more of ADGroup#.

I could copy the script and replace ADGroup with ADGroup1, and a second copy with ADGroup2, but that's not very nice, is it?

Hope someone alter the script to make it work. I would really appreciate it.

That doesn't mean the respondents here know every detail about the script and have the time to redesign it to meet your specifications. The help here is free, after all, and there's no SLA. You could contact the author of the script, of course.

miisactivate FIM 2010 error

Hi All,

1st time post. Hope you can help, when I run miisactivate cmd to enable a DR sync Server with my account (Local Admin on the server)

I recieve error "Login Failed for User 'Mydomain\loginid' "

However a user with Domain Admin rights can run the command succesfully

The Command that I run is miisactivate "%Path%\fimSync_Encryptionkey_backup.bin"  Service AccountID

Does this require Domain admin level, to run, or is there something else I may require

Regards

Maybe you need access to the SQL database, can you verify that you have access with your account?

Hi Thomas, thanks for the reply.

Yes, I do specify the FIM Sync Service account as the user, please see below for the command.

shouldn't it be: miisactivate key.bin user *

Reply:

Hi Thomas,

Yes you are right, my bad forgot to include the star

The  command I run is: miisactivate "fimSync_Encryptionkey_backup.bin" My Domain\FIM_Sync_Service_Account *

then I get a window 'Microsoft Identity Integration Server Warm Standby Activation Utility' with the following error

"Login Failed for User 'Mydomain\myloginid"

I have placed the command in a batch file so that its not prone to typo's.

I'm not sure if it could lead up to the error you are seeing, but have you tried including the full path to the encryption keys? e.g. c:\path\keys.bin

Reply:

Hi Thomas,

Yes I do specify the full path to the encryption keys file.  I will update my rights with domain admin rights to temporarily resolve this.

I have tested the smae command with my rights (Local Admin - which fails_ and a user with domain Admin (This works)

Thanks for you assistance

Just to clarify on the permissions - the only requirement is that the user account is a member of the FIMAdmins group.

Depends on how you specified it during the inital setup

I know this is an ancient thread, but I hope this helps someone.  The account that runs the "miisactivate.exe" command must have write permission to the database.  Something you take for granted until the DBAs lock you down...  :)
