question before adding a new collection

question before adding a new collection

current RDS 2012 R2 Deployment consists one collection of 4 RDSHs providing RemoteApp apps.

I prepared 2 new RDSHs for Session Based Desktop access.

Before last click for Collection addition I would like to ask few questions for eliminating a problem.

I see it like that:

1. Existing RemoteApp users cannot be redirected to a new collection that will not publish apps. By clicking a shortcut of RemoteApp on user desktop the broker will provide only Servers in RemoteApp collection. So there is no chance that RemoteApp user will fall on a server from a new collection where no apps are available.

2. The same user may have access to both collections. By clicking RemoteApp icon he will get the app from RemoteApp collection.

If he will click the icon of Publidshed Desktop (from Session Based Desktopcollection), he will get a Remote Session desktop.

Am I right?

Thanks.

... no one on earth cannot confirm that 2 collections in the same deployment are "isolated" from each other and brokers can perfectly serve both?  :) Joking... :)

No answers situation shows that nobody here on forum not using few collections in production?

More precisely, my question is about collections with different "roles": RemoteApp and RemoteDesktop Session.

The silence just put me on hold and I deleted 2 new RDSHs prepared for RD Session collection from Server Pool on Deployment.

Hope I will get a definite answer here about possibility to accomplish my scenario. What is strange that there is no some real doc about this. I found a blog of Freak Berson about RD Session dated 2013....

For now I have to install new Deployment (that creates unnecessary headache) for testing if Sessions scenario can be equivalent to Citrix Published Desktop in our environment. And if it will be OK I have to contact MS for getting precise answer about coexistence of 2 collections. If I will need to create a new deployment for accomplishing this task it is a bit over work and resources... again 2 new brokers, LB config and etc... not very practical.

Waiting for some response on forum.

Thanks.

Skype federation, extending your Skype4B into potentially a lot of spam?

We are thinking of federating with Skype catalog (Skype directory search).

Being a long time user of Skype, I'm afraid of Skype users/bots randomly trying to befriend you. Can this become a problem?

Reply:

Depend on you configuration, if you allo only communication with users on their contact list. No direct IM is possible.

Reply:

From experience from far with skype federation and directory search i have not come across this problem. When a Lync / Skype for Business user adds a Skype for Consumer user they have to accept the request first before you can communicate with them.

If you dont want to enable it for all users you can use the external access policy and allow allow Public IM access as required.

Hope this helps.

ASP.NET MVC

Hi there, just wanna plea 6 questions based on ASP.NET MVC Application.

1. You are developing an ASP-NET application that allows users to download Microsoft Azure Log files, you need to improve the performance of the application?

2. You are developing an ASP.NET MVC application. The application uses a SQL Server database and a SQL Server login and password. You need to ensure that the password for the SQL Server login is not stored in plain text. Which two actions should you perform? Each correct answer presents part of the solution?

3. You are maintaining an ASP.NET MVC application that runs on Azure. Remote debugging Is enabled for this role, but the input endpoints for remote debugging have been removed for security reasons. You do not have permission to view the Azure Portal for this deployment. You can log on by using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). You must attach a remote debugger to the application. You need to add the input endpoints to enable remote debugging. Which file should you modify?

4.You are building an ASP.NET application. You must test in multiple browsers at the same tune. You need to refresh all of the browsers automatically each time you make a change to the code. Which three actions should you perform in sequence?

5. You are developing an ASP.NET MW application that will be deployed on local Internet Information Services (IIS} severs and on a Azure Web Role. You must log events for the application when It's deployed locally and on Azure. You must not deploy additional services_ You need to implement a logging solution Which two technologies can you use?

6. ) You develop a new ASP.NET MVC application You use local storage to maintain state. The localStorage object's setItem method is failing to store a value. Which two scenarios will cause the failure?

Examine the application catalog portal and service logs on the server.  I seem to recall that they live outside of the usual logs location.

5. Installed IIS.

6. Installed MP.

7. Installed App catalog roles.

Now, it's working.

Windows 10 running on a Compaq Presario SR5350F???

I have something to tell the whole community. (Note: I have not used my computer for a long time.)

Since the release of Windows 10, I want to dual-boot Windows Vista with Windows 10. However, I'm always wondering if my old computer known as the Compaq Presario SR5350F can run Windows 10. Or, I'd put Windows 10 in a VM using VirtualBox. However, I'm not sure if the Presario SR5350F meets the system requirements.

Has anyone been using Windows 10 on a Compaq Presario SR5350F? I'm just wondering.

Pina618, here is the MS link that will give you the info that you need, normally even if your computer meets the requirements, you'll need to pay attention to the graphics mininum.  That is probably the most important of the whole list.

This also is a pretty good link to read through.

Pina618,

From reading your above link from HP, I would say you have a good chance that it would run Windows 10.  The only problem that I have is, I'm kinda weak on Graphics Requirements.  I do know that your graphics card has to be able to support the info below:

  • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver.
  • I noticed that my link above did not work so here is an updated link for you.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-specifications

You can download a 90 day evaluation of windows 10 Enterprise, but when you buy your version, any data will be lost, so I would'nt store any valuable data, or if i did I'd back up all that you want to keep.

Good luck,

Dave

Well, I would rather dual-boot it or put it on a VM using VirtualBox (don't have that yet). So, it is an x86 version, so I can get the 32-bit version of that.

Actually you may use the compatibility checker to see if your machine can running Windows 10 . Just follow the steps in the URL below:

I cant use function keys without pressing function

i cannot use my function keys without pressing fn ever since the windows 10 upgrade and I do not know how to fix it

Reply:

This varies from PC to PC, but most of them have a "Function Lock" so it always just assumes that Function (FN) is being pressed.  For example, to Function-lock on the Surface tablets keyboard, you can press Fn+CapsLock.  From then on, the Function keys will work without pressing Function.

Keyboards from other PC manufacturers vary, so you may need to check your manual, the manufacturer's support page, or just do a quick web-search to find out how for your particular model of computer.

Gather Software Requirements

I am doing a brown bag lunching session. I trying to come up with a common model of how to gather software engineering/developing requirements

The Sales Department has made a request to create a report to view sales history. You are assigned to gather the technical and functional specifications. How would you gather the specifications, what questions would you ask, how would you organize the project?

This is a standard response I've written up in advance to help many people (thousands, really.) who happen to post their question in my forum, but please don't ignore it. The links provided below I've collected to help with many issues we've seen.

If you're asking a question particularly about one of the Microsoft Dynamics products, a great place to start is here: http://community.dynamics.com/.

If you really think your issue is related to the MSDN Subscription, and I screwed up, I apologize! Please repost your question to the discussion forum and include much more detail about your problem, that could include screenshots of the issue (do not include subscription information or product keys in your screenshots!), and/or links to the problem you're seeing.

SCOM 2012 R2 Report module empty

Hello SCOM admin,

My report module has been empty since the DBA team downgraded SQL. I am not sure what is the exact problem, but I'll try to provide as much information as possible.

  • SSRS server with Reporting module installed on
  • SQL server contains the database

My report server respond to http://reportserver/SCOMreports but it display no reports. I do see a folder called Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehose.Report.Library, however it contains some RES. xxxx that I can't do anything with.

This looks to be a permissions issue, make sure you SSRS service is running with the SCOM Data Reader account which was set up in SCOM, also check your SSRS configuration on the SQL server, the execution account to also be set to this account

Just to be sure, I have 2 Run as Configuration Accounts

1. Data Warehouse Action Account = Bobby

2. Data Warehouse Report Deployment = Alice

On my Reporting Server, I have 2 other accounts,

3. Service account for SCOM Reporting services = Charlie

4. Execution account which is also DBO of SCOM database = Diego

So... I would need to change the service account Charlie and the execution account to Alice ?

Copy Queue and replay queue lenght troubleshooting

This is a generic question. If someone sees copy queue and replay queue length increasing. What Should be troubleshooting steps??

I know from exchange perspective we can check with commands

(Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup) | ForEach {$_.Servers | ForEach {Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus -Server $_}}

(Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup) | ForEach {$_.Servers | ForEach {Test-ReplicationHealth -Server $_}}

Then we can check event viewer also to get any further details. But problem is sometimes even event viewer also doesn't give you much information. How to test this from network or storage perspective ?

Reply:

We normally start by waiting to see if they drop.  The database queues will always rise if someone sends a large message to a lot of mailboxes in your organization, and only time will get your queues to drop.  I'll add that this is the only thing that can cause the queues to rise unexpectedly under normal operations.  And at times like this, patience is a virtue.

If the queues do not drop, check your event logs to see if there are any hardware issues with your storage system.  If your replication health turns up issues, you'll need to check those issues.  If not, you're going to have to figure out why the queues rose when your system shows everything's healthy (see my above note about the previous paragraph).

You cannot do a clean install of Windows 10 unless you have a valid Windows 10 key OR you have upgraded to Windows 10 and the Win10 upgrade has activated. In the latter case you can skip the product key page and it will activate automatically.

Bill,

I was running the technical preview and upgraded to 10 as you say.

So should I just let it run for a week or two and let it activate? I'm not sure if that's what you are suggesting?

Kind regards,

Bruce

------------------------------------
Reply:

If you want the "free upgrade" (no need for a product key/purchase), perform an in-place-upgrade, not a clean-install.
You do this, whilst running the older/qualifying OS (e.g. your OEM Win7)

If you perform a clean-install, and have never been through the in-place-upgrade on this machine, this machine will never activate as genuine.

Indeed you did. If you were running the Win 10 preview and want to leave the Insiders program, the fastest way to get the free upgrade is to reinstall Win 7 and upgrade it.

I did a complete remote system back up prior to beginning my upgrade journey! I have the squre window back waiting for Windows 10! Woot

Heres what happened previously, My laptop had already been upgraded and activated by Microsoft a couple weeks back. I'm an mcp and jumped on the technical preview release at the beginning. Any way, all was well, and a few days ago I came home from work, logged in only to realize that the laptop was junk. Some how 95% of all my services were shut off and disabled. It took 2 nights to get the system restore working or i thought. I ended up doing a full factory reset and 3 days of updates.

I'm guessing they pushed an update that my configuration didn't like and it neutered the laptop. Have you heard anything of this issue? It was bad, I had no usb, no network, I had to turn all those on with there dependencies just to back it up.

Thank for your help!

Bruce

Need to run a powershell script on remote machine using PSEXEC

Hi,

I need to run powershell script on remote machine using PSEXEC. Basically i need to copy .ps1 to a remote machine and run .ps1 from remote machine ...Can anyone help me..

Thanks

Reply:

Use means that offer Powershell for local and remote command execution

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh849719.aspx

For psexec I prepared script that could copy script to target directory. In my case I used TEMP. You can either share temp or use C$ share, change directory to temp and copy here your script. With one script you can do your job in large number of computers. In execution of psexec do not forget to change firewall setting for file sharing. More details on psexec read this article:

Can you place the code in a variable and then execute the variable?

Something like:

$Username = User1  $Password = ConvertTo-SecureString "MyP4ssw0rd" -AsPlainText -Force  $Credential = New-Object -typename System.Management.Automation.PSCredential $Username, $Password    $Script = (Write-Host "This is my Script I wish to pass to a remote machine")    Invoke-Command -ComputerName PC1 -Credential $Credential -ScriptBlock {Using:$Script}

Would that suffice?  Obviously changing the $Script variable to whatever you require.

lync 2013 client memory leak

the lync 2013 client memory will increase all the time when I just doing open a conversation and type some text, then close the conversation(what ever you send it or not),  for example, the lync client is using 100M memory at start, I open a new conversation, the memory will increase to about 104M, then I close the conversation window, the lync client may use 102M memory. if you continue do that, the lync client may use more 4G memory and never free. even you sign out, the memory will still be there.

I think it's a big problem. any one meet the same issue, and have any good idea?

thanks

Hi,

do you have latest patch installed?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2933495

And is it Lync 2013 and not Skype for Business client?

For Skype for Business you can try to turn off Emoticon animations.

Windows 8 and 8.1 OS on hyper V plateform with host OS is Windows Multipoint Server 2012

Hi,

I have a query on windows multipoint server 2012 with hyper V installed. did windows 8.1 and windows 8 OS is working on virtual machines? Virtual machine of Windows 8.1 Os is not allowing to install drivers.

so please confirm if there is known issue.

Reply:

It should work - AFAIK Windows 8/8.1 already contain the necessary drivers so unless there are HyperV client component updates, there is no need to install them again. However you cannot install 3rd party drivers for core components on a VM directly, it this is what you ask.

Best greetings from Germany

Calling all SSRS Gurus! Technet August Results and September Call to Duty!

All the votes are in!

And below are the results for the TechNet Guru Awards, August 2015 !!!!

The TechNet Guru Awards celebrate the technical articles on TechNet, contributed from valued wiki authors like YOU!

Each month, the contributions are scored by a panel of judges (5 per category, 2-3 in each are MS experts), and the winners of each category are showered with love and attention from all corners of TechNet.

See the links at the bottom, to find out more about the competition and how to enter.

We have picked the top three highest scored contributions for each category to bestow our awards upon.

The awards are in gold, silver and bronze, the gold obviously being the top winner of the category.

The last column is just a few of the comments judges made during the judging process.

In some cases, we have not obtained permission to use the judges names, so they have been reduced to initials.

My fellow wiki ninjas will be digging deeper into some of these articles in this blog series, so watch out for those.

Starting this month you will notice some articles are marked as failing to meet our minimum bar for quality or content.

Any of our judges can exercise their right to veto an article, if they do not feel it meets minimum requirements for a medal.

When this is the case, we will at least give an indication of the reason, so you understand why.

A big thank you also to the other authors who did not make the top three of each category.

Some articles only just missed out, so we may be returning to discuss those too, in future blogs.

Disable users who never logged on

Hello,

i run ldap query to find out which users that have never logged on (&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user))(|(lastLogon=0)(!(lastLogon=*))). and i found a lot of users. how can i disable all these users by ldap query or power shell

Regards,

Reply:

Actually, your LDAP query will return inaccurate results, because it only queries one DC. The lastLogon attribute is not replicated, so a different value will be found on every DC in the domain. However, you can replace lastLogon in your filter with lastLogonTimestamp (assuming your domain is at Windows Server 2003 functional level or above). This attribute is only updated if the previous value is more than 14 days in the past, but then the value is replicated to all DC's in the domain. If someone has ever logged on, the user object will have a value for lastLogonTimestamp on every DC.

When you query for the user, you might want to retrieve the whenCreated attribute, to make sure the user object wasn't recently created.

To answer your question, if you have the Active Directory module (at least one DC with Windows Server 2008 R2 or above), you can use the Set-ADUser cmdlet to disable users. For example:

Set-ADUser -Identity jsmith -Enabled $False

If you use Get-ADUser and the -LDAPFilter parameter with your filter, you could pipe the result of that query to the Set-ADUser cmdlet to disable all the users found. I would use the -WhatIf parameter at first, so the command reports what it would do without actually disabling anyone, just to be sure. Then you can remove the -WhatIf to finish the job. For example:

Get-ADuser -LDAPFilter "(&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(|(lastLogonTimestamp=0)(!(lastLogonTimestamp=*)))" | Set-ADUser -Enabled $False -WhatIf

I modified the parentheses slightly in your filter, because they didn't seem to match correctly. Does this help?
