Spyware and Malware integrated into programs
Hi everybody,
I have been having malware problems for years now and each and every anti-virus, anti-malware I have installed on my phone and laptop have all failed to remove the malware. This got me thinking, is it that anti-viruses and anti-malware programs are programmed primarily to identify "malware" programs from possibly unknown sources? If for example I install Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Flash player that has requires plug-ins regularly and a hacker hacks into the download and installs a malware program within the Adobe installation files. Would it be possible for an anti-virus/malware to identify this malware and neutralize it? i have been getting many "unresponsive script" messages from multiple browsers which got me to this line of thought. Could anti-malware programs such as Windows Defender be engineered to identify programs that run unresponsive scripts? If not how can identify such programs and eliminate them from the rest of the application?
Any advice on the way forward would be really appreciated.

I believe there's hacker near by using this device to hack my decoder, laptop. Phone and get my digital appliances to behave in a way that is unwanted. It would be a great help if Microsoft could come up with software to block this device and similar devices and stop them from interfering with my appliances.

Office 365 ProPlus with Azure AD Subscription and without out O365 License
Hi,
We are having an Azure AD subscription and we are syncing the On-premise AD accounts to the Azure AD. We also want to deploy the Office 365 ProPlus for the Users. But we do not have the Office 365 License. Is it possible to install use the O365 ProPlus without the Office 365 Online services Licenses? we will use the Azure AD only and no Office 365 Online services at this time. Will it work? Request to help
Thanking you,
Regards, Ketan
Reply:
Hi,
No, It will not work.
Azure Ad and Office 365 Proplus are the different services.
You would have to take subscription of o365 proplus to deploy it. There is nothing any other way to do it as it is a subscription based product.

2016 CU2 upgrade failure on R services
The problem I was having is that After applying CU2 it would not update R services and polybase, both services would then shut down due to being at a different patch levels. After digging into the Polybase logs about failure to download various versions of SRO. This is due to my servers being cut from the internet. See below for answer. @Gaadsfasd, you must have some type of internet connectivity since you are posting here. Go to a machine that has internet connectivity and past in the URLs that have failed ... from "Starting download: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=808803&clcid=1033"
Save the SRO_3.2.2.10000_1033.cab file to a flash drive and copy the files over to the SQL instance that you are trying to patch. You might try copying it to "SomeDirectory\SRO_3.2.2.10000_1033.cab" and re-running the Setup of R Server to see if that works ... otherwise you might have to install the .cab
The .cab Cabinet file is a compressed archive that cannot be ran or executed directly.
Windows has built-in support to open and view .cab archive content, but not outright install the .cab even if it's intended as an update package or hotfix. In order to install a manually downloaded .cab Cabinet file, use the following trick that makes use of pkgmgr.exe (Windows Package Manager) instead.
Open an elevated privileges command prompt as administrator, and run the following command to install and integrate the Cabinet archive:
pkgmgr /ip /m:<path><file name>.cab /quiet
Or,
start /wait pkgmgr /ip /m:<path><file name>.cab /quiet
Replace <path> with the path (location) to the .cab file, and <file name> with the actual file name of the .cab file, without parenthesis. If the Cabinet file is located on the current directory (same directory where command is ran, the path can be skipped.
Tip: If you intend to save an installation log, append the /l:<path><file name>.log to the end of the command. Again, replace <path><file name>.cab with the file name of log file to save to with its folder location (path).

11MB/s almost exactly matches a NIC running at 100Mbps link speed. Is the adapter in the VM a legacy one? Those are limited to 100Mbps. What about the NAS? How fast is the link speed on it?
What about if you transfer from the NAS to HV host itself, what is the speed?

Update to 1607 through update catalog
Reply:
Is there a way to update from 1511 to 1607 through the update catalog. None of my systems are on an unclassed network and have to be updated manually. What is the MS or KB# that will let me do this.
1. Here is the first cumulative update which will bring you from version 1511 to version 1607.
Microsoft Update Catalog. KB3176929
https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=KB3176929.
For 64-bit OS, use the 2nd LAST one on the list.
For 32-bit OS, use the LAST one on the list.
Adding............ I don't know for certain, perhaps you can use the same MS Update Catalog, enter KB3200970. See if you can download and install it. If you can, it will update your OS build to Win 10 version 1607 OS Build 14393.447 which is the most current build #.
2. Here is the complete up-to-date Microsoft Update History:

why we need to change SID of the VM after cloning the vm
Reasons:
Machines with the same SID will not be able to join to the domain. From Microsoft system point of view, SID should be unique for every computer device that connected to the Active Directory.

Yes I totally agree with the need to sysprep :D
The big debate from all those years ago, is kind of similar to debates of today..
i.e. 'if all sysprep does is Function_A, then I will simply do Function_A and not use sysprep'
When such erroneous assumptions are adopted, maybe because 'observation shows evidence of Function_A', bad things happen.
I often argue in my work "how can we know what the software developer was thinking when they wrote the code for this installer routine?"
We can never know, so we can never assume that we know the relevant installer logic.
Just because you see the outcome or logfiles, doesn't mean that you can know the logic nor *why* the logic did deliver that outcome.
Don [doesn't work for MSFT, and they're probably glad about that ;]

They use these systems at various events throughout the year. They log on to these systems using their own credentials; however, Outlook uses a different set.
Now, to make matters worse this particular mailbox was deleted from their network months back and has been purged. I've recreated a new account and mailbox.
So, I'm looking to make a PowerShell script that will back up each system's Outlook to a PST, delete the existing Outlook Profile, recreate a new one, and then import that backed up PST.
Is there a good place to start learning how to do this that anyone knows of?
I need to keep it all native (Win7) PowerShell

Reply:
Outlook can be configured to auto-backup to a PST. YOU can also set Exchange to auto-archive all mail. Yu can use the Exchange utilities to backup all mailboxes to a PST files by mailbox name. You cannot remotely backup a users Outlook session.
Post either in Exchange forum or in Outlook forum for instructions on using these methods.

identifying 2003 and XP machines that are recently active
Hi,
I'm hoping for help, I have to identify all 2003 and XP machines and found a script, below.
This script identifies 2003 but outputs to the screen, I'd like to ID XP too and get the output in a file.
Also i want to learn this for myself, if there is a book or resource please note, I'm not a programmer so I'm challenged more than some to pick this stuff up!

i have to run a PS script to name and output all 2003 servers and XP PCs and output them to a file and then email the output to a series of email addresses.
I found the followng script someplace, it displays to the screen, but only 2003, with 2 columns cut off.
The script below sends the output to the DOS prompt, I need a file with all of the columns intact.
I'm launching PS script from batch file and can Blat email the file from the batch file.
Any help would be appreciated.

here is the screen output, if i could see the missing columns, add XP machine names, and send all that to a spread sheet, or even a txt file, that would be great.

OOBE Powershell Domain Selection Join
Hi All,
I'm very new in PowerShell scripting and need assistance from someone.
What I'm trying to achieve is the following: (Multi-Domain Forest)
OOBE (Out-Of-Box-Experience) boot which will execute a script which need to do the following:
1. Get credential input from a user (Example Get-Credential), with user input using UPN logon and Password
2. From this input (credentials) gather the domain user belongs too
3. With domain information received, join the machine to the domain the user belongs to.
I will really appreciate any input on this.

Hi Jannnie,
welcome to PowerShell scripting. Bill is indeed right: As it currently is, you are asking quite a bit beyond the scope of this forum. That said, we'll be happy to help you get started:
Here's a guide on writing your first script. The key take away is to get a process set up first. Basically, make a flowchart of the steps needed to achieve your desired result. Then google how to do each individual step you are stumped with. When that fails, come back to us and ask us how do this single step you had trouble with.
The guide will show you how to tie together the individual steps into a functioning script.
Cheers and good luck with your script,
Fred

Robocopy feature is very slow in Windows server 2008 R2 standard
Hello team,
I've been using Robocopy feature in Windows to transfer 115 GB of files in my Server 2008 to Server 2012 R2 for the past three months. I was getting a speed of 22Mb per minute earlier, now for the past two days the transfer process is very slow, it is reduced to 2Mb per minute. I've to finish the transfer within 3 days. Please help me by providing solution to boost up the transfer speed.
This is the roboscript I am using :
robocopy \\server1 \\server2 /S /mir >txt1.txt
Any suggestions on the script?
Also I identified that there are trillions of data packets in network connection. i will attach the details of data packets in the server. Is there any way to refresh these packets. I tried restarting the server, but no use.
Help me out!
Thank you

Why we should Hyper-V over Citrix XenServer and VMWare ESXi?
Hello Experts.
I have a question and it is that Why we should use Hyper-V and not Citrix XenServer or VMWare ESXi?
I saw some diagrams that compare these products but I can't understand the final words!!!
Thank you.

HI,
please check my basic comments below:
a) Hyper_V
- since release of server 2k12R2 and seems there is a big investment in developing virtualization at Microsoft and being very mature with a lot of features that are very stable.
- Hyper_V is actually free product that you can implement and even make it high available in same concept as VMware high availability. so it's very good till level of medium enterprises.
- Hyper_V is a Microsoft product meaning no need to worry about any integrations whatsoever with any Microsoft product in your environment.
- Microsoft support are very helpful and I find it the most powerful support mechanism among all vendors in the market. very strong support team around the world , onsite engineers as well...etc.
- VMware is also good investment and once of the market leaders with a vision focused to develop virtualization and even now going into direction of virtualizing even network using NSX. so they have a good reliable history in this field.
-VMWare needs a very good knowledge to be able to integrate and troubleshoot when you face any issues.
- VMware support depends on the project terms and conditions and eventually you might find yourself getting support from local partner that becomes little challenging to you.
- still it's not 100% clear what server 2016 is brining to the world but seems that almost all technologies are pretty the same in terms of hos they are virtualizing the hardware resources to bring you a virtualized platform.
I hope that helps

How about Citrix XenServer? It is free too.

Hi,
the Biggest deciding Factor for My clients, is Licensing Model and Cost.
for instance...
a two node, Highly powered Hyper-v cluster, running say 60 VM's would only cost 2x Server Datacenter licenses for each Node.
Infact, even if those servers were running 100, or 200 or however many windows VM's, the cost would still stay 2x Server datacentre Licenses.
Citrix (even though free) would still require you to Individually license each VM.
VMware, you pay significantly for the ESXI Node licenses, as well as VM client OS licenses.
Besides all this, Hyper-v Handles virtualization brilliantly. the Migrate functions are as good as VM ware or any other.
the core features are as good as any other.
and finally, once you set up a virtual Hyper-v switch, or fail over cluster network, by default, the virtual network runs at 10GBPS, Where VMware by default uses the Hardware nic speed, unless teamed.
Hope this helps a bit.
cheers.

XenServer is free and I tested it. It is true that VMWare is a leader but in my idea XenServer performance is better than VMWare ESXi.
I agree with your Network scenario. VMWare in network is Slow and I did teaming too but its performance was slower than XenServer with one NIC!!!

How to Forward HTTP request to HTTPS while HTTP PORT is close?
Operating System: Windows Server 2008
.
Description: - We have a web project which is running on HTTPS PORT 443 on WWW and deployed on JBoss Application Server on Windows Operating System. Recently we received an attack on HTTP Port 80 on application server file.
.
Attempt: - We scanned application server and were able to identified API which can be executed by an attacker. We have handled this situation.
.
Problem Description: - On asking with IT team, why have they opened HTTP Port 80 on the machine? What is the need to open HTTP port, if the project is running on HTTPS PORT 443? They said that it is open because if customer access http://www.abc.com, so they will automatically transfer it to https://www.abc.com
And if they will close the PORT 80, then following request "http://www.abc.com" cannot be received.
.
Kindly let us know, how can we deal with this situation? We want some solution so that we can close the HTTP port on the machine but if a request comes to HTTP, we can automatically forward it to https.
.
Kindly assist us, I will be really thankful for any suggestion.

Multiple IP addresses mess up mapped network drives
They connect to the network just fine. We can browse to our servers and map network drives.
If you add a secondary ip address, if that ip address is lower in number than the static ip address set on the network card, and reboot ever, the mapped network drive no longer works. I'll try to explain it in more detail:
Lets say my static ip address is 192.168.1.100.
-I map my M: drive to a network server. It works fine and I can access it like any other drive.
-I need to add a secondary ip to my pc to work on something else. I add 10.10.0.100 to my network card.
--My drive mapping is still there, it still works just fine.
--I am able to access the other devices on the 10. network.
-The following day I have to reboot for whatever reason.
-After rebooting the M: drive is no longer available and I can no longer see the server when I browse the network to look for it to remap the drive letter.
-Both ip's are still listed in my network cards tcpip settings.
-I remove the 10.10.0.100 from my NIC.
-I browse the network again and now I can see the server and remap the network drive.
-I can re-add the 10.10.0.100 ip and everything stays working as before. Unless I reboot, and then the mapped drives are no longer available.
-Testing this same thing but using a higher numerical ip addres (not using the 10.10.0.100), something like 192.168.4.100, does not affect anything. As long as your secondary ip's are higher than the one you have assigned as your primary (numerically speaking), then there is no issue.
So, what it looks like is Vista is allowing you to add whatever secondary ip's that you want, but if any of them are lower than the static ip you first setup, in numerical value, any network drive mappings are gone the next time you reboot. I assume because Vista is taking the lowest ip address (numerically speaking) and using it as your primary ip for that computer.
Anyone seen this or know how to fix it? I'd report it to Microsoft directly but apparently the only way to do that, that I've found so far is to pay to talk to them to report it. Any help is appreciated, thanks for your time.

Hi,
Thank you for posting.
To identify the issue more clearly, please let us know where the network share which you mapped locates. Is the server on the same network segment with the 192.168.1.100 or 10.10.0.100?
Please also run "ipconfig /all" to export all the network settings both on this computer and the sharing server and post the information to this thread.
Thanks.

Hi,
Thank you for your update.
Please run "CMD" and then "route print" to export the route table and post the information to this thread for our further research.
If possible, please try the following:
1. Add another NIC to your computer and set the static IP Address 10.10.0.100 on it, then set 192.168.1.100 to the previous NIC. Please check if this works.
2. It is not recommended that connecting two network segments to one NIC, it may cause unexpected issues. Therefore, you can set up a router to connect the two segments.
Hope this helps. Thanks.

Hi,
Thank you for updating.
I noticed there is a Persistent Route entry in the route table. If it is not necessary, please just remove this entry and reboot the computer to see if it helps.
To remove the entry, please refer to the steps below:
1. Open an elevated command prompt.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
route delete 0.0.0.0
3. Reboot the computer and run "route print" again and check the results. You can paste the router table to the thread again if the issue persists.
For more information, please also refer to the following document:

After that reboot I was unable to access my network drives and no longer able to get on the internet, so I removed the 10.10.0.100 address and rebooted again. Still no luck, once it was booted back up, I still could not access anything. I set my ip to obtain automatically, and saved it, and then put my static ip back in again which in turn recreated the persistent route and then I was once again able to get back on the internet.

Hi,
Thank you for updating.
At this time, please try the following again to see if it works:
1. Open an elevated command prompt.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
route delete 0.0.0.0
3. Go to "Network and Sharing Center", select "Manage network connections".
4. Right click the connection which accesses the "private network" and choose "properties".
5. Find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4 in the list.
6. Click Properties, and then input the IP address, Subnet mask and DNS server settings manually. (Note: Leave the Default gateway empty.)
7. Then click OK to apply the settings and close the window.
8. Please reboot the computer to check the results.
Thank you for your efforts.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem. I am having the almost the identical problem and cannot find a solution anywhere. Your post here is the closet to my same problem and I am curious if you ever fixed it.
Thanks.

I have the same error. after i added a second ip the network drives are no longer reachable. (because windows takes the second address as primary)
it seems to be sortet by the numbers.
first ip 192.168.1.210
second ip 10.71.1.210
in xp this is working.
;-(
i forgot, that you have to boot that you can see the problem. if you edit it on the fly its working.

Does a lack of response indicate that I've actually found a bug and it's something Microsoft will have to address/fix? :-D

I don't know a lot about the details of what goes on behind the scenes with multiple IP addresses on one NIC, but I know this: It is broken on Windows, but seems to work just fine in Linux. In fact my solution to accessing the 10.0.0.x device on my 192.168.x.x subnet is to vnc to Linux on another PC, and browse etc from there. Seems like an unnecessarily complex way of doing what should just work in Windows.
