Hi James,
Could you confirm the following:
- Which version of the RDP client are you using?
- Which version of winlogon.exe is on the server
- Are either KB3002657 or KB3035132 installed on the RDS server?
- KB2465772
- KB2655998
- KB2708857
- KB2775511
If either of the above updates are installed, please remove them and install the following 4 if they are not present already:
Please can you also confirm if there is an AV client installed on the RDS server? One in particular (Webroot) have acknowledged an issue as you have described.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi James,
I had the same issue on my 2012 R2 server. I just uninstalled KB3002657 and KB3035132 and the issue seems to be resolved without installing any of the other patches you mentioned. As an fyi, we have no patch numbers lower than KB2883200 installed on our server. Thank you for the help.

Windows 10 /RDP client Problem
Hi..I upgraded to windows 10 today
I now cannot login o my internet remote connection. I get a message that says check to see if client RDP 6.0 is properly installed. Tried all fixes I can find nothing works. Also tried the app that doesn't work either. cannot therefore log into my work. Help appreciated. thanks

How are you trying to connect to the remote connection? Do you click on a link in the webpage is a remote desktop server?
If you search start for remote does Remote Desktop Connection show and can that be opened?

Hi..Yes I have a link to connect. I have tried the remote desktop connection and I cannot connect this way. this was how we used to connect but now we can only connect via weblink to a remote desktop server. I have tried the windows 10 app too and that wont work, even though I have tried the settings at the server.
Getting a bit desperate now !

Sorry more questions.
Can \ does anybody else connect with Windows 10? (trying to work out if it could be a issue with your PC or a general compatibility issue)
what is the server you are trying to connect to?
Any other errors appear? Can you test this on same local network as server? (to check connection issues)
How manages the server? Have you asked them?

I have the same problem. The solution is upgrading your RDP client to RDP 10 but good luck finding that. Microsoft says it is part of the version 1607 cumulative upgrade for Windows 10 but I have installed that and the problem still exists. I am unable to find anywhere on the net to just download the RDP 10 client. If anyone has a link I would greatly appreciate it if you could post it here. Thanks
Ok standard suggestion log your own new thread. A new thread (question) will get fresh replies.
So what are you trying to connect? The Windows 10 machine from another? (what is the other OS?)
Or connecting from this Windows 10 machine to another machine? (what is that?)

Expression Error in SSIS 2012 using VS 10
@[User::Edesc] is defined as String variable in SSIS
Backuplog is Audit table.
In expression of ESQL Task I have this---
"SELECT @[User::Edesc] = LEFT("+ @[System::ErrorDescription]+",10))"
"INSERT INTO Backuplog
(ErrorDesc)
VALUES ( "+ @[User::Edesc] +")"
I am just trying to capture the Error Desc in a variable and put it into a Audit table
I am getting below error.
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "SELECT @[User::Edesc] = LEFT(Executing the query ..." failed with the following error: "An error occurred while extracting the result into a variable of type (DBTYPE_I4)". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

Hi Thanks Yitzhak,
Below is the error I am getting. is it that the ErrorDesc contains data like single quote etc. which might be causing this error. I have used similar code in 2008V2 with SQL Server R2 it worked fine.
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "INSERT INTO Backuplog
(ErrorDesc)
VALUES (LEFT('Ex..." failed with the following error: "Unclosed quotation mark after the character string ' property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

You can try to use REPLACE() function.
Here is a test case for you that simulates a single quote in the middle of the string.
Just adjust it for your needs.
DECLARE @errorDescription VARCHAR(20) = 'Error de''scription'; DECLARE @sel VARCHAR(1024); DECLARE @tmp VARCHAR(1024); SET @tmp = REPLACE(@errorDescription,'''',''''''); SET @sel = 'INSERT INTO Backuplog (ErrorDesc) VALUES (LEFT('''+ @tmp +''',10));'; SELECT @sel; Output:
INSERT INTO Backuplog (ErrorDesc) VALUES (LEFT('Error de''scription',10)); ------------------------------------
Windows 10 VM for VMware : Stuck on boot
I have grabbed a VM from this site for testing web applications on Microsoft Edge here:
https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/
The image, containing Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 Stable (14.14393), is what I've downloaded.
The problem I'm having is on VMware, it stays stuck on boot, where the loading icon and the blue logo is shown.
I have read posts from other users saying they have to wait a few hours for the VM to finish loading. Is this true, or should I need to do something else about it?
Thanks.

Besides, please note VMware is not a product of Microsoft, you could try Hyper-V as the virtual machine tool.

Get AD info from a non domain connected computer
Hi,
I have the following function and it works fine on a domain connected computer but I need help getting it to work on a non domain connected computer as well.
Function GetCompDescription(strComputer, strDomain) On Error Resume Next Dim objConnection, objCommand, objRecordSet, strDN, objComputer Const ADS_SCOPE_SUBTREE = 2 Set objConnection = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") Set objCommand = CreateObject("ADODB.Command") objConnection.Provider = "ADsDSOObject" objConnection.Open "Active Directory Provider" Set objCommand.ActiveConnection = objConnection objCommand.Properties("Page Size") = 1000 objCommand.Properties("Searchscope") = ADS_SCOPE_SUBTREE objCommand.CommandText = "SELECT distinguishedName FROM 'LDAP://" & strDomain &"' WHERE objectCategory='computer' and name = '" & strComputer & "'" Set objRecordSet = objCommand.Execute objRecordSet.MoveFirst Do Until objRecordSet.EOF strDN = objRecordSet.Fields("distinguishedName").Value objRecordSet.MoveNext If Err.Number <> 0 Then Exit Do End If Loop Set objComputer = GetObject("LDAP://" & strDN) GetCompDescription = objComputer.description On Error Goto 0 End Function The gole is to get description of an AD computer both when in full OS (Win7 & 10) and when in WinPE.Have seen some examples like here:
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/heyscriptingguy/2004/12/13/how-can-i-run-a-script-under-alternate-credentials/
but I can't get it to work.

I turn to this forum for help and support and believe that I have been quite clear with my question. I do not need more reasons why not to do what I want to do, please. However, I'll explain for the curious that many of script settings are stored and retrieved from a SQL database and the account that I would use to get this attribute from AD will not have access to anything more then that description attribute.
So please, I would really need and appreciate some help with this.

Have you considered that maybe you are doing the wrong things. Perhaps you need to redesign your deployment.
Also this should be posted in the ConfigMgr forum as they will be able to help you understand how others avoid your dilemma.
Here is a Richard Mueller special that will show you how to do this assuming your AD is set up to allow it.

I do know what I'm doing and why. Just hard to explain everything and I don't feel like i have to. I'm not a noob on ConfigMgr and don't think this question has anything to do with ConfigMgr. It's just the VB stuff I need help with.
Thanks for the tip! It was something like that I was searching for. Unfortunetly I can't get it to work from WinPE. Works fine from a domain joined computer in full OS. This is the script I'm trying with now:
Option Explicit Dim objRootDSE, strDNSDomain, adoCommand, adoConnection Dim strBase, strFilter, strAttributes, strQuery, adoRecordset Dim strDN, strUser, strPassword, objNS, strServer Const ADS_SECURE_AUTHENTICATION = &H1 Const ADS_SERVER_BIND = &H200 ' Specify a server (Domain Controller). strServer = "MyServer.tst.testdomain.com" ' Specify or prompt for credentials. strUser = "tst\TestUser" strPassword = "xyz12345" ' Determine DNS domain name. Set objNS = GetObject("LDAP:") Set objRootDSE = objNS.OpenDSObject("LDAP://" & strServer & "/RootDSE", _ strUser, strPassword, _ ADS_SERVER_BIND Or ADS_SECURE_AUTHENTICATION) strDNSDomain = objRootDSE.Get("defaultNamingContext") ' Use ADO to search Active Directory. Use server binding. strBase = "<LDAP://" & strServer & "/" & strDNSDomain & ">" ' Search for all users. strFilter = "(&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user))" ' Comma delimited list of attribute values to retrieve. strAttributes = "distinguishedName" ' Construct the LDAP query. strQuery = strBase & ";" & strFilter & ";" _ & strAttributes & ";subtree" ' Run the query. adoCommand.CommandText = strQuery adoCommand.Properties("Page Size") = 100 adoCommand.Properties("Timeout") = 30 adoCommand.Properties("Cache Results") = False Set adoRecordset = adoCommand.Execute ' Enumerate the resulting recordset. Do Until adoRecordset.EOF ' Retrieve values. strDN = adoRecordset.Fields("distinguishedName").Value Wscript.Echo strDN adoRecordset.MoveNext Loop ' Clean up. adoRecordset.Close adoConnection.Close When running from WinPE I get this error
"Invalid syntax"
on line
Set objNS = GetObject("LDAP:")
Exactly the same script works in full OS on domain joined computer.

Which should tell you that you are missing components in your WinPE build.
Again: The ConfigMgr, SCCM or Deployment forums can better help you learn how to do this.
In all cases you should be using PowerShell. VBScript is fast disappearing from the Microsoft sites and documentation. It is no longer supported on any new MS Products. For Exchange, SQLServer and SharePoint the only supported tools are PowerShell.
The latest MDT supports accessing the a domain during image installation from the setup file steps.

Using Group Policy to Set Windows Font DPI size
I was in need of a way to change the Windows 7 user interface to use the Font size of 100% (vs the default of 125%) for custom applications on our network.
Many searches on the net did not provide an easy way to accomplish this via Group Policy. The font size is PER USER and not PER MACHINE.
I found a method using Group policy preferences (GPP) to configure the Font DPI size and wanted to share it for others who might need to do the same...
I created a new GPO for the users needing this font size and linked it to their OU. Then configured the following:
User Configuration \ Preferences \ Registry (Right click and select NEW \ Registry Wizard)
Configure the following DWORD key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\LogPixels
Use the values as needed:
00000060 (Small Font Size 100%)
00000090 (Medium Font Size 125%)
00000144 (Large Font Size 150%)
I used 00000060 to set the Small Font Size of 100%. Gpupdate /force a test client machine, then logoff/logon and see the setting take effect.
When users try to change the font size in via the control panel, the value will be overwritten the next time the group policy updates. Id even recommend preventing users from being able to change the font dpi with another GPO setting:
User Configuration \ Policies \ Administrative Templates \ Control Panel \ Personalization \ Prohibit selection of visual style font size = Enable
Just wanted to share this for anyone needing to change the Windows 7 default font DPI size en mass using Group Policy. We can thank Microsoft for not giving us a ADMX template for this issue!!!!

Thank you! This is very helpful.
Warfy, you're an idiot if you think that the reason a 24 inch 4k display looks good is because it's a mac.

This policy setting states that it is supported on Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 operating systems only.
The description on this setting says that it disables the "Font size" drop-down list on the Appearance tab in Display Properties. This does not exist in Windows 7. I don't think the DPI setting you are talking about is the equivalent.
The other setting is good to have enough. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks a lot for this!! Made my client happy!
However, and I'm surprised nobody discovered this, your hex convertions are wrong :) I tried to set 125% and I entered 90h as such, but that was way too big. After some checking, I discovered the hex value is simply a conversion of the percentage in decimal. So, it's sufficient to select Decimal and enter "125"; regedit will convert to the correct hex value automatically.
So the correct values actually are:
100% 00000060
125% 0000007D
150% 00000096
And it seems you can even set custom values!
Also, I can confirm this is working on WS 2012 R2.
Thanks again!

frederic1 - while, generally this is true, when setting values in the registry you can set them to the decimal value that way (IE: 96 in HEX = 150 in DEC), this is not the case for the LogPixels registry key:
LogPixels is based on the number of pixels in an inch. The 100% setting corresponds with 96 (decimal). Thus, in order to come up with the decimal values for other percentages, you simply multiple by 0.96:
100% = 100*0.96 = 96 (decimal) = 60 (HEX)
125% = 125*0.96 = 120 (decimal) = 78 (HEX)
150% = 150*0.96 = 144 (decimal) = 90 (HEX)

Darn. I just spent more than an hour troubleshooting a GPO with the wrong values from the original post, did not scroll down to here!
So thats also how I figured out that the intemediate values don't work, at least not in a RDS session host setting.. <o:p></o:p>
In this context only the values 96, 120, 144 work.<o:p></o:p>
Originally these were DPI values.<o:p></o:p>
I also tried good old 72, did not work.
I was wrong - it does work to use a smaller or intermediate number - however the correct value does not show up in the CPL panel Microsoft.Display.

Issue with Windows 10 Search Indexing and Display Languages Resulting in "These results may be incomplete".
Hello,
I have recently come across an issue in our Windows 10 1607 environment where the Windows Search/Cortana would not display search results from the Control Panel or Windows Settings.
Searching from the Start Menu would show: "These results may be incomplete..."
Searching from Windows Settings would show: "Search results aren't quite ready yet, but we're working on getting them together. Try again in a few minutes."
After researching online I discovered a number of people experiencing the same issue, and attributed the problem to missing indexes in this location:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\windows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState
There are many suggestions to repair the issue, including running the System File Checker and Windows Image Repair but in many cases these have not resolved the issue.
In our environment the LocalState folder contained \Indexed\Settings\ but no language subfolders. On a working Windows 10 installation you would see at least one folder matching your installed display language, i.e. en-US or en-GB.
In our environment, we have both en-US and en-GB language packs installed, with en-GB (for en-AU) set to default.
The missing language folders suggested that the issue may be caused by something language related, perhaps a multiple languages causes an indexing conflict. To verify this hypothesis I removed the en-US language pack, restarted, and within a few minutes the search indexing issue was resolved.
To remove the language packs, I ran the following command from an elevated Command Prompt (CMD) window:
lpksetup /u
This opened a window showing duplicate English languages installed (example below). With en-GB being the system default, this left the other entry to be en-US. Checking the box next to the second English entry and following the wizard through to completion (with restart) resolved the issue.
If anyone else is still experiencing this issue I would recommend you try removing any non-default system languages as a troubleshooting step.
Important Note: Removing some language packs may result in certain applications to stop working or be removed. The Windows 10 RSAT for example requires the en-US language pack to be installed to work, removing the en-US language pack will also remove the Windows 10 RSAT.
This issue is a perfect candidate to receive a hotfix from Microsoft given the number of cases posted online. In the consumer space many people have experienced this since updating to the 1511 and/or 1607 releases.

Hi,
Have you received any follow up advice or a solution from Microsoft regarding this problem? We are also seeing the same behaviour.

Hi Damon,
No feedback from Microsoft however in December (2016) we found the issue was present in our captured base OS image which explained why the issue was affecting all our new builds. The image had been in use for a few months and included updates installed via task sequence (during creation) and offline servicing. This discovery prompted us to recapture the base image from original install media, including both en-GB and en-US language packs, and we've not had the issue since.
It's possible the issue was caused by a patch or combination of patches. We don't know for sure. No further investigation was conducted.

Thanks for the reply - we shall try that then. Interestingly we also created our reference image in November - then offline serviced that wim with the December CU.

Hi,
I've re-created our reference image with the latest January 2017 CU and I'm still seeing the problem.
Can you describe the process you went through when you re-created your reference image? I'm using MDT and adding the latest CU as a package so that it is integrated into the OS when it is installed. I'm then patching the reference image against a WSUS instance and capturing it.
At deployment time I'm adding the additional language pack using a DISM command in a Configuration Manager Task Sequence. This step is prior to the Software Updates step so that the CU is installed again (as a language pack is installed).
You said your including the language pack in your reference image - how are you adding it and at what stage? Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Damon

We're using a non-MDT Configuration Manager Task Sequence to create our reference image. I wouldn't think the MDT integration is contributory since we also had the issue without it.
I think the most relevant parts of our configuration which could assist you are:
- The Apply Operating Step is applying a Offline Serviced Windows 10 Enterprise 1607 English International (en-GB) WIM. An unattended file is specified:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend"> <settings pass="specialize"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-International-Core" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <InputLocale>0c09:00000409</InputLocale> <UILanguage>en-GB</UILanguage> <SystemLocale>en-AU</SystemLocale> <UILanguageFallback>en-US</UILanguageFallback> <UserLocale>en-AU</UserLocale> </component> </settings> <settings pass="oobeSystem"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-International-Core" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <InputLocale>0c09:00000409</InputLocale> <UILanguage>en-GB</UILanguage> <SystemLocale>en-AU</SystemLocale> <UILanguageFallback>en-US</UILanguageFallback> <UserLocale>en-AU</UserLocale> </component> </settings> <settings pass="windowsPE"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-International-Core-WinPE" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <InputLocale>0c09:00000409</InputLocale> <SystemLocale>en-AU</SystemLocale> <UILanguage>en-GB</UILanguage> <UILanguageFallback>en-US</UILanguageFallback> <UserLocale>en-AU</UserLocale> </component> </settings> <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:c:/iso/install.wim#Windows 10 Enterprise" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" /> </unattend>
- We are including the en-US Language Pack in our reference image along with the relevant en-GB/en-AU Features-on-Demand. We are using DISM to apply these packages. The order sequence can be seen below. Note the redacted steps are specific to our organisation.
- We are applying updates via SCCM Software Updates. All update steps are configured to apply all software updates and do not evaluate from cached scanned results and may include updates for Features-on-Demand, Language Packs and Language Interface Packs in addition to Windows 10.
Hope this helps.

Thanks that's great information.
We are using an offline serviced Windows 10 Enterprise 1607 English International (en-US) WIM, then adding in the en-GB language pack and other relevant feature on demand components. So in reverse to what you are doing, however that shouldn't matter I would think.
You have given me some things to look at - I will look at including the language pack in our capture process. Hopefully that combined with the modified unattend.xml will resolve the issue.
Thanks again.
Cheers

Hi,
Thanks heaps for the information you provided. I've now resolved issue by injecting the language pack and feature on demand components into the Microsoft Windows 10 1607 US Enterprise install.wim. The problem seems to occur when you either offline service the wim file or patch it using WSUS as part of a build and capture prior to applying the language pack. I also had to make some changes to my unattend.xml so the OOBE was processed without any prompts.
Thanks once again,
Cheers Damon

Hi kanth4362.
This question should be asked in the Microsoft Community for Office, which is more appropriate for this kind of topic.
Anyway, you cannot downgrade Office Outlook 2013 to 2007 (or upgrade Office Outlook 2007 to 2013): you have to remove the existing version and install the other one.
Bye.

enabling Media bypass over a TLS trunk
Hi,
I'm trying to configure a SIP TLS trunk from Mediation server (skype for business) to a SBC with Media bypass enable. But its not working.
Media bypass works fine with TCP but not with TLS.
Call:
PSTN endpoint --------------TCP ---------------SBC----------TLS/SRTP-------------Mediation server-------Skype Enpoint
In TCP with media bypass enable, Skype mediation server sent its client ip in C line. but in tls its sent its own ip address.
Has anyone tested this before? Does Media bypass works over TLS ???
Kindly suggest, if any changes are required.
Best Regards,
Ankit
Reply:
Did you try to trace the SBC? Have you imported the correct certificate for the SBC? Even the Root CA as well?
Is the configuration working with TLS WITHOUT media bypass?
------------------------------------
Reply:
Hi Thomee,
Yes, i have collected SIP logs on SBC itself. Skype meditation server is not sending endpoint IP address in C line.
Apart from this issue, call is working properly. No issue either with signalling or media.
yes, Configuration works fine with TCP.
I tried rebooting mediation server couple of times but no help. :(

Reply:
Hi Ankit,
First of all, Media bypass must work over SRTP.
Make you update SRTP settings on Set/Get-CsTrunkConfiguration and encryption level on Set/Get-CsMediaConfiguration to satisfy your requirement.

Hi Vishnu,
Yes, i have configured SRTP on the trunk.
------------------------------------
Reply:
What about EncryptionLevel on Get-CsMediaConfiguration?
Make sure, its either support encryption or require encryption.
Default value for "EncryptionLevel" is Require Encryption. In that case, media bypass won't work properly when TCP connection is configured between Mediation Server and SBC. So this value must have updated.
Please refer this Technet page for More info regarding the cmdlet.
