Windows Media Player Stopped Working
Reply:
Since you updated to Windows 10, Windows Media Player stopped supporting MP4 files. Remember you have installed a codec pack like K-Lite, Windows Essentials, etc; in order to play MP4 with Windows Media Player. The codec pack software was designed for Windows 7, not for Windows 10. So, as the codec pack doesn't work in W10, you cannot play MP4 files anymore, only AVI files or audio files like MP3 or WAV. There's no a codec pack for W10 available yet. Look for another player supporting MP4, or convert your MP4 files to AVI. Any Video Converter is excellent. Patience, soon we'll get third party software (new codec pack designed for W10) to solve this problem.- Hope this helps. Cheers!

problems installing Net Framework 4
What's wrong with the .Net FW 4.6 in Windows Features on W10 RTM?
BTW "but nothing" is too vague for a useful symptom description. E.g. there is probably an msi.log or something you could refer to and maybe "all ways" could even include trying an install with the verbose command line option for msiexec.exe. Use ProcMon to find out what other diagnostics you may have. E.g., filter with Operation Is WriteFile and use the Count occurrences tool on the Path field.

Update: I realise that the method of recreating a broken profile in windows 8+ is different to previous versions:
Originally one would delete the folder from C:\Users, and then delete the registry keys in HKLM...\ProfileList.
Now it is very important to delete a profile through System > Advanced System Settings > User Profiles > Settings > Delete. This way the full windows 8 profile will be regenerated in the next logon.

Regarding the SSIS Transaction for sequence container
Dear All,
I have implemented the External transaction for my sequence container. This has 8 DFTs in it . It is working fine in case of success or failure.
Now I wanted to implement the solution like if the job stops at the 4th task then first 3 tasks has data in it .
But I wanted to rollback if the job stops in halfway the execution of sequence container. Please help me to solve this issue.
Thank you
Sri
Reply:
Hi Sri,
Implement a logging mechanism for all the 8 DFT load status. Before starting the all 8 DFT's check for any failure in previous run, in this case, you can truncate data from all the 8 staging table and start a fresh data load.
Hope this helps
Regards,
Vijay

Thank you Vijay for the reply.
I had thought through this. But the challenge for is it should rollback with in the same run( This is mandatory). The above proposal didn't accepted.
Thank you
Sri
------------------------------------
Reply:
By checking the logging data, you can still achieve to truncate at the same run by checking the logs after DFT.
Also, transaction will fail only if the DFT error output is set to fail component. Set Fail package on failure = true in all DFT and try. Hope you have enabled MSDTC.

Upgrading and clean install Windows 10
For anyone wishing to upgrade to Windows 10:
- Before you upgrade, back up all your files (and perhaps save bookmarks from web browsers).
- Uninstall any Cisco VPN client software.
- Upgrade to Windows 10.
Note 1: Do not skip step 1. It is absolutely essential!
Note 2: If anyone has any issues with the upgrade, it is possible to roll back to your previous Windows edition (only valid for one month from upgrade!). To roll back:
- Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery
- Under "Go back to Windows 7/8" click on "Get Started"
I would strongly recommend doing a clean install AFTER upgrading (if you try a clean install WITHOUT upgrading first you will need to buy a new product key!). To do this:
- Go to microsoft(dot)com/en-us/software-download/windows10 to download the utility (32 bit or 64 bit dependent on the architecture of your system).
- Click on "Create installation media for another PC".
- Check the "ISO" box and choose the location (perhaps desktop).
- Open the ISO once it has downloaded and follow on-screen instructions. Make sure you select "Keep Nothing" as you go through the utility.
- After Windows 10 finishes installing, go to Start > Search for "Disk Clean-Up"
- Open Disk Clean-Up and click Ok on your hard drive.
- Click "Clean up system files" and click Ok on your hard drive.
- Check Previous Windows Installation(s) (optional: Select other checkboxes you see appropriate).
- Click Ok.
- Copy your files back on to the PC and reinstall software.

GPO or way to change "Use Automatic Configuration Script" 2008 R2
Afternoon all,
We have recently changed our proxy server. We were using Websense and all users in their Internet Explorer LAN settings, had the " Use Automatic Configuration Script" enabled / ticked, and with a URL in there.
We cannot find any group policy where this is defined, and to make matters more complicated because we are running Server 2008 R2 and Internet Explorer 11, we now have no way of overriding or changing this setting.
Having googled this for some time all i can see is that we need to install the new RSAT tools on a Server 2012 R2 or Windows 8 machine, however we have no access to these operating systems, and there is no option in Internet Explorer for the Internet Explorer Maintenance, so now we are stuck with users getting an error each time they open Internet Explorer.
Does anyone know a way we can make a group policy, or something to wipe out the tick and the wording from " Use Automatic Configuration Script"?
Hope you can help, thanks

Unfortunately when i go to control panel settings and then internet settings in GPO, i only get the option for IE 5 or 6, IE7 or IE8.
I think this is do to with what i mentioned in my opening statement - We are running Server 2008 R2 domain controllers and the clients all have IE11 so i cant use this option. Ive already found and tried the registry change item but this didnt work.
I simply need to take the tick OUT of the box and UNTICK the item, i dont neccessarily care the wording written inside the option, as long as it is UNTICKED.
Hope this makes sense, cheers

Thanks, we have now added that registy key to delete the item, it seems to have "ungreyed" the option but the option is still ticked and the wording is still in there.
Is the option definitely "AutoConfigURL" as per the link you sent me? Cheers
------------------------------------
Reply:
Can you search the registry for the wording and/or the AutoConfigURL key elsewhere in the structure? Maybe it is in one of the policy hives. But I thought it was only the key and yes it is AutoConfigURL, I tested it on my machine.
If testing, make sure the user "Current User" is the same as the user opening IE.
If you put the previous settings in via Internet Explorer Maintenance, check this link for where it puts entries.

I believe this has solved the issue ( deleting the reg key via GPO )
It seems to have actually greyed out the option, unticked it and removed the wording which suits us as nobody can edit the option and the wording is no longer there.

What does the powershell property MaxConcurrentCommandsPerShell stand for?
I am writing an application where I spawn a persistent remote runspace.
Then for every request I create an object of System.Management.Automation.Powershell class, associate it with the runspace, add a powershell script and invoke the same. Once the script is invoked, I dispose the System.Management.Automation.Powershell class object. Here, I do not dispose, the runspace (powershell session).
After running my application for some time (>2-3 hours) the powershell call fails with an exception that says the quota for Maximum concurrent commands per shell has exceeded.
Since, I create a new instance of System.Management.Automation.Powershell class for every request, I was wondering how/why will the same script fail after 2-3 hours with the mentioned exception.
I wanted to understand, if there is something, I need to additionally dispose/cleanup?
I see MaxConcurrentCommandsPerShell is set to a reasonably high value of 1024, wanted to know how this limit is evaluated. I am executing a script in the shell and, do not think script commands will be executed concurrently, it would be rather sequential.
Can you please help if my understanding is incorrect somewhere?
Warm Regards
Himanshu Agarwal

I have been looking for a good documentation for quite some days now, and have done a decent search. One of the search pointed to the link you've mentioned as well.
Here, I did not understand the difference between MaxMemoryPerShellMB and MaxConcurrentCommandsPerShell, the writer wants to increase the memory, but uses the command to increase the quota of the latter property, but the snapshot again displays, he writer executed the script to increase the memory of the shell. That, led me to believe, MaxConcurrentCommandsPerShell was a typo there for MaxMemoryPerShellMB.
The real question I have is why do I get the powershell exception "quota for maximum concurrent commands per shell has exceeded", when I am executing a script in the shell, which I believe is executed sequentially. And, all this happens when the same script is executed repeatedly, everytime in a new Powershell class object, after some 2-3 hours of run.

This is likely caused by recursive calls in a loop.
\_(ツ)_/
------------------------------------
Reply:
But, I do not have recursive calls in my powershell script.
------------------------------------
Reply:
If you have a pipeline and it calls other commands which are pipelined you can have an implied recursion or an endless loop.
Gci * -dir | %{Gci $_ | ....}
or embedded loops within a pipeline. All can create concurrent commands. The setting is there to prevent infinite loops and infinite recursion. Having mismatched parens or braces can also do this.
I suspect trying to cal linvoke-command inside an invoke-command might also do this.
Can't see your script so there is no way to answer your question exactly.

Thanks for your inputs, I'll be revisiting my scripts and traces.
Is there a possibility that powershell could already be logging this somewhere or can be made to do so? Maybe to an event log? Just a thought, I'll check the event logs as well.
------------------------------------
Reply:
I re-looked into scripts and everything looks fine there.
The same script executes fine initially but starts failing after 4-5 hours. Here's what I am doing for every script execution.
And, I believe, this is not leaving any residue on the persistent runspace. I believe, "powershell" instance is collected/deleted after the using block, leaving the runspace in the same state as it was in before executing the script.Collection<PSObject> result = null;
using (PowerShell powerShell = PowerShell.Create()) { // attach with our persistent runspace. powerShell.Runspace = this.remoteRunspace; try { powerShell.AddScript(PowerShellScriptLib.GetScript()); result = powerShell.Invoke(); } catch (Exception ex) { this.TraceMsg("SCOM Powershell Exception: {0}", ex.Message); } }
if(null != result) { /* Process result */ }
------------------------------------
Reply:
That is not a PowerShell script. Why would you claim it is?
You have one host and multiple runspaces. We have noiea howyougot all of this upor what you have used to build it.
For developer issues you really need to post in the developer forum.
\_(ツ)_/
------------------------------------
Reply:
PowerShellScriptLib.GetScript() returns the script as string and that is invoked using Powershell .NET APIs on a remote machine.
Why do you say "You have one host and multiple runspaces."? Does Powershell class actually represents a powershell runspace? I do not think so.
This definition is from MSDN for System.Management.Automation.Powershell class
"Provides methods that are used to create a pipeline of commands and invoke those commands either synchronously or asynchronously within a runspace. "
and, powerShell.Runspace is the property that get/sets the runspace for the Powershell instance. And, I am setting it to an instance which I have already created earlier in my code.
Anyways, thanks, this doesn't appear to be the right place as you suggest.
Thanks for your time and effort.

Reply:
Again - you are asking a developer question. What you posted is not a script it is just a piece of C code.
What is happening cannot be guessed at by looking at this code. If your script sleeps, idles or sits in a loop then it is likely the connection is being closed and reopened many times. This may have found a bug of some kind. You will need to learn to use some form of debugging on both ends to discover what is happening. I suggest that you start by posting your issues in the correct developer forum for assistance.
I would try to synthesize the issue but it would take me some time to set up two machines for debugging under VS. I have too many VMs online already and am out of space since I just set up Windows 10 for testing. The developer forum will more likely have someone who can set up something to verify the issue.
Suggestion: Create the smallest script that runs like yours but have it do nothing. Test that script to see if it, too, fails. I have noticed that remote sessions to Exchange will fail with too many sessions very frequently. This causes me to remove all connections and wait for some time before retrying a session. The issue will only clear if I shut PowerShell down.
You can disconnect from a remote session and reconnect later. This method may be a better way to remote a long running session.

Are the ResUtil ResUtilGet*Property functions valid?
I thought I would modernize our code by utilizing ResUtl.lib instead of our ancient copy of utils.c for parsing resource properties but it looks like that was a mistake. In testing the change I find that calls to ResUtilGetSzProperty always return ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER. After verifying that all the parameters look right I stepped into the disassembly and found that the function does nothing but return ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER -- there is no actual code in the function.
Are these functions supposed to be used? They are in the docs...

Installing Windows 10 from ISO within Windows 7
Tried clean install using ISO on OEM licensed Windows 7. Used both disc and USB, computer tag and OEM's product keys. Got a key invalid message. Tried the skip option with Win7 installed. Win10 installed OK but then requested the product key, dead in the water. No combination worked. It may be that only retail version product keys will work for clean install.
What did work was inserting the disc and running Setup.exe directly from the disc within Windows 7. I assume if Win8.1 has the same issue then running Setup.exe should also work.
In hind sight Win10 team had to design the ISO to work from Setup.exe because that would be the only way to install through Windows update. Unfortunately this option seems to have been overlooked in publication.
The sad thing about this is after searching the internet and forums for hours little information was found that would be helpful and no solution to the product key problem.
Hope this helps...
Reply:
You will notice on the OEM product key, that it states WINDOWS 7. As such, this will ONLY work with WINDOWS 7.
You cannot clean install Windows 10. You MUST upgrade within Windows 7. The Windows 10 UPGRADE will activate automatically, as long as your Windows 7 is genuine. Once the Windows 10 upgrade is activated, your system will be registered as a licensed Windows 10 machine.
You can then perform a clean installation, just skip the product key. It will activate, since your system is already registered. You can also change from 32-bit to 64-bit, or vice versa, at this point. (But can NOT change from Home to Pro, or vice versa)
Also, there are dozens of threads discussing this.

SQL2K8 on a W2K12R2 Cluster -- Yea or Nay? I'm testing tomorrow 7/30/2015
I know SQL2K8 is supported on Windows Server 2012 -- albeit, with the caveat that SP3 for SQL2K8 is installed immediately afterwards.
But: can I expect to cluster it on a Windows Server 2012 R2 standard cluster (WSFC)?
I'm clustering SQL2K14 on the same WSFC. That, I think, should work.
