Files lost on skip cut/paste

Files lost on skip cut/paste

Hi,

I don't know if this is only unintuitive design or a bad bug, however what happened:

1) Turned off Hyper-V virtual machine
2) Deleted the machine
3) Went to a folder with virtual drive files (maybe a bad idea, anyway...)
4) Selected them, clicked "cut" (a few files of 60 GB, 28 GB, 20 GB, 20 GB, 4 MB, 4 MB, 4 MB)
5) Went to a different drive in explorer
6) Clicked "paste"
7) Moving files in progress...
8) Dialog appeared - file partially in use (probably the Hyper-V manager)
9) Chosen "Skip"
10) Dialog appeared for another file
11) Chosen "Do for all such..." + "Skip"
12) Moving finished (mostly skipping)
Expected result: skipped files are in the source folder, the rest in target folder
Actual result: target folder only contained those 4 MB files, 60 GB file in source folder, but all the 20 GB-ish files gone (refreshing folders didn't make them appeared, neither after restart)

The files were to be sorta deleted anyway, but I find this a weird and potentially dangerous (although slightly understandable) behavior. I was told this is a place to mention it.

OS Windows 8.1 x64 (probably Enterprise, might check tomorrow)

Please let me know if more information is needed, thank you

Corrupted file in ISO image help!

So, a while ago, I downloaded an ISO image for WIndows Server 2012 R2  evaluation and run it in a virtual machine and, some time through the install I get an error message from Windows, not the VM, saying that some files are corrupt or missing, setup cannot continue.

What is wrong? I've also downloaded that ISO for a 2nd time and tried again, but the same thing happened again! Why?

Your ISP may have a riverbed or similar caching hardware. You might try downloading from another source.

Child domain displays Parent domain users and computers- When trying to change gives message that domain not found

Greetings,

Basically after creating this child domain (orlando.example.local) under the main domain example.local, When you look into the users and computers, the child domain itself only shows the users and computers of the parent domain. Then when I right click and try and change the domain, it shows me the child domain under the parent, but when I choose it, I receive an error window: "The domain orlando.example.local could not be found because the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"

I've been trying to figure our the problem for a couple of weeks. Is there a fix to this other than starting all over again?

Note: This is a Windows Server 2012 that was already configured as a stand alone domain, I demoted and uninstall the services, then promoted again as a child domain.

Note 2: At first it wouldn't let me promote as a child domain because the parent domain was in a different forest functional level (win svr std r2- win svr std).  So I use power shell to take down the parent to match the forest functional level of the child domain.

Are there other health issue with the server?

Have you tried dism /online /checkhealth etc ?

Pen input into RDS or VDI

Looking for help getting our Wacom Intuos Pro tablets working through thin clients in either Windows 8.1 VDI's or in 2012 RDS. The Wacom drivers are installed, the tablet is seen, the buttons work. We can draw as well. The only problem is that we can't actually see the cursor move. Typically the pen hovering above the tablet also moves the cursor around, but it's not doing that, making it hard to aim to put stylus to tablet.

Environment is Wyse D10D thin clients on ThinOS 8.0.522. RDP directly into a single Windows 8.1 Enterprise VM for testing. VM sits on a Server 2012R2 host with the virtualization role. RemoteFX GPU is added (Nvidia Quadro 4000). wnos.ini is configured to force passthrough of the USB id of the tablets. As said, VM receives the hardware passthrough and identifies the wacom tablet.

Trouble to Use my ASUS X53S pc after Win7 Home Premium to Win10 upgrade

Hi,

I am really in trouble to use my pc after that I have accepted and installed the bright new Win10 OS in my ASUS X53S pc which had Win7HomePremium OS before!

Installation went on smoothly and I was just starting to use the rebuilt pc when, after the successful login, I cannot proceed because I lose the pc control:

My desktop icons appear white and it's impossible to open them, desktop is continuously blinking with the icons all appearing (attached link to screenshot after my account has been verified) and disappearing all together, My mouse pointer can be moved along the screen but it's inactive and the time little circle is continuously shown. The only functionality is with ctrl-Alt-Canc which is opening the blue screen with the option: lock, disconnect, change password, task manager. If I choose the task manger option, I can see that pc is apparently working, with a lot of active processes and load shown.

I can only start up and shut down my PC. :-(

I am very worried about my data and my usual support that I have always had by my PC in Win7 OS. I need a support to interact with it and to try to fix the issue. As far as I have seen Win10 is really attractive OS but I cannot use it and it would be very useful to try to come back to Win7 Home premium at least.

F-xx key are inactive at startup and I and no clue how to access the temporary mode status.

Thank you for your help, in advance.

I can insert the screenshot later because my account hasn't been verified yet

DFS namespace high availability

Hello,

I have two servers 2012 R2 :

- Server1 is an AD with DFS namespace & replication.

- Server2 is regular server in the domain (not a secondary domain controller) with DFS namespace/replication.

So my domain name is : example.priv, and my share : \\example.priv\SharedFolder .

Some shared folders are sync between both server.

I added Server2 in the namespace servers.

My goal is to have high avalaibility if my Server1 goes down, i still want to access to the share.

if i ping example.priv it returns Server1's IP.

When i stop the Server1, i cant have access to my share anymore, because example.priv resolves only to Server1.

I need example.priv to resolve to Server1 and Server2 (round robin?)

How could i setup my environment to have access to my share when Server1 is down?

Thank you,

Reply:

Thats what i thought, so now I'm using my second server as a secondary domain controller, and it works fine.

Thanks Slava.

Previous Versions not listing

Hi all,

I am hoping to start a discussion about previous versions where by if you modify the maximum number windows has by default you can put yourself in a situation where you can not easily recover from them as the GUI doesn't list them all.

I was hoping windows 10 would address this but it doesn't appear to have done it.

At the very least it would be good if it ordered the previous versions it does list with newest first as opposed to oldest first.

What are others thoughts if you have found yourself in the same situation??

Cheers,

NTFSSecurity 3.2.3 PS module

Hi all

I downloaded and am using this module: NTFSSecurity 3.2.3. Link:

https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/1abd77a5-9c0b-4a2b-acef-90dbb2b84e85

I then proceeded to create the following script:

Import-Module NTFSSecurity
$Departments = "M","MS","MA","MB","MD","ME","MP","MTR","MTC","MTV","MTYT","MTBI","MTN" ForEach($Department in $Departments){ $AccGroupFull = "MyDomain.local\Acc-$Department-Full" $AccGroupRead = "MyDomain.local\Acc-$Department-Read" $DomainUsers = "MyDomain.local\Domain Users" $DomainAdmins = "MyDomain.local\Domain Admins" $RootPath = "\\files.MyDomain.local\CIFS1\data\files\shared\$Department" $DepartmentPath = "\\files.MyDomain.local\CIFS1\data\files\shared\$Department\Department" $PublicPath = "\\files.MyDomain.local\CIFS1\data\files\shared\$Department\Public" # Grant domain admins full access Add-NTFSAccess -Account $DomainAdmins -AccessRights FullControl -Path $RootPath Add-NTFSAccess -Account $DomainAdmins -AccessRights FullControl -Path $PublicPath Add-NTFSAccess -Account $DomainAdmins -AccessRights FullControl -Path $DepartmentPath # Grant everyone in MyDomain list rights to root directory and read/execute to public folder Add-NTFSAccess -Account $DomainUsers -AccessRights ListDirectory -Path $RootPath Add-NTFSAccess -Account $DomainUsers -AccessRights ReadAndExecute -Path $PublicPath # Grant members of the Acc-Department-Full access Add-NTFSAccess -Account $AccGroupFull -AccessRights ReadAndExecute,Write -Path $DepartmentPath Add-NTFSAccess -Account $AccGroupFull -AccessRights ReadAndExecute,Write -Path $PublicPath # Grant members of the Acc-Department-Read access Add-NTFSAccess -Account $AccGroupRead -AccessRights ReadAndExecute -Path $DepartmentPath # Disable inheritance for both the root, department and public folder Disable-Inheritance -Path $RootPath -RemoveInheritedAccessRules Disable-Inheritance -Path $PublicPath -RemoveInheritedAccessRules Disable-Inheritance -Path $DepartmentPath -RemoveInheritedAccessRules }

If I go to the folder it correctly displays the security groups on the folder with the rights I want, but it doesn't actually work. If I then proceed to modify the security for each group added to the folder by adding an extra right, pressing apply and then removing the same right and pressing apply again, then it will work perfectly. It's like it doesn't fully realize that the new permissions have been set through a script untill I manually change something.

I've also tried setting it with the SID of the security groups. which I can see is then succesfully resolved to the name of the group on the security of the folder, but it still doesn't work.

Any ideas why I'm having this issue? Thanks for any help! :-)

Windows 10 (Final Version) WiFi not working - Thinkpad S3 Yoga 14

I just upgraded my Thinkpad S3 Yoga 14 to Windows 10 today. After the upgrade, the Wifi network stopped working. Device was reported correctly installed on Device Manager, but available Wifi networks weren't shown.

I tried a lot of things, uninstalling the Wifi device from Device Manager, updating to the Windows 10 lastest drivers from the Lenovo Support page, installing older driver versions... reboots, reboots, a lot of reboots with no success.

Finally I'm going back to Windows 8.1. I waste a lot of time of work trying to solve that problem. A not working Wifi network is a big issue for me, my work is 100% network connected.

My WiFi card is:

Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260

Anyone else with this problem?

Thanks

Yes, I've seen an unusual number of these sorts of posts here and over in Answers forum.

Some of the posters found that it was because they had Cisco VPN installed--they had to rollback to the previous OS and uninstall it before installing W10 again (how that wasn't caught during beta is a little strange).

But plenty of others, myself included, did not have that or any other VPN software installed, and the problem remains a mystery.

I have a different Lenovo and a different NIC than you, and I've seen all sorts of brands mentioned today.

The Lenovo autodevice detection will not work with Win10 yet, so manually select the correct device and you see Win 10 drivers as a selection.

I did..

Came home at lunch and started the upgrade from Win7 to 10. Got home to see the beautiful screen waiting for me. Start menu worked, notifications worked, chrome and edge worked. Very cool. Then I tried to run a simple application I have for a game that downloads new map files. It goes to run and says it has no permission to the game directory. Odd.. I am the only account on this PC, a local admin account. I got to check and Trusted Installer is the owner of everything on the C drive and admin is only given read on much of the drive. So, being an IT guy I go ahead and right click on C drive and change owner to me. Takes forever and yells about open files. Finally finishes, I reboot.

Usually with Win7 it takes <10 seconds from ASUS screen to no circle around mouse cursor (love SSD's). This took about a minute. Once the boot was completed I see I have a notification - I click on it. Nothing... I try again. Nothing.. I clock on the start button. Nothing.. Windows key. Nothing.. Something is borked up bad. Reverted back to Windows 7.

So, does anyone have any stories similar or any suggestions? I want to go to Windows 10 again but I am concerned.

On the FAQ, I found something that needs clarification from Microsoft:

My Windows 7 product key won't verify. What's the problem?

The most common issue is the use of a product key for a product not currently supported by the site such as an Upgrade key, an MSDN key, product keys for pre-installed media or an Enterprise edition key. For access to MSDN products or Enterprise edition visit the MSDN Portal or the Volume Licensing Service Center. Upgrades and pre-installed media are not currently supported by the tools on the site.

If you believe you have a valid product key and are still receiving an error, please contact Support.

When I read this, I understand that the Windows 7 OEM preinstalled keys are not supported for a free upgrade.

Am I right?

I just bought a new Dell with Windows 7 Pro because it was the only way to have a English Professional OS. If I wanted Windows 8, I only can choose a French Home edition. :-S

Hi,

If you have a version of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 that came preinstalled on your device (OEM) or was purchased in a store (retail), you may qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 10. How ever since there is still no article or information about how/which kind of OEM license (could) perform free upgrade yet, We'd suggest you wait or follow the guidance from the OEM manufacturers for good measure.

Actually, I tested the upgrade on different OEM computers.

Devices with Windows 8.x OEM preloads are validated without problem but not the Windows 7.
Suggesting that I need to wait something from Dell seems irrelevant because when I go on the support site, the only information I can found is this:

You upgraded to Windows 10 for free from Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1 Update

If you upgraded to Windows 10 for free and ended up in a non-activated state, try following these steps:

  1. Go to Start Start button icon, then select Settings > Update & security > Activation.
  2. Select Go to Store, and check to see if a valid license is available for your device. If a license isn't available, you'll need to buy Windows from the Store.

As nothing is working on my 3 weeks old laptop, I had to register it by installing a Windows 8.1 Pro then upgrade it to Windows 10 Pro and it worked.

If Microsoft doesn't support the Windows 7 OEM Upgrade, the "Get Windows 10" app should'nt be pushed on these computers. It's not difficult to know if the key is from an OEM partner or from a Retail box.

BranchCache - what a mess. What am I doing wrong?

I used this paper as a guide: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Windows-Server-2012-R2-and-c18a6dd1

I also googled this item but it seems most/all the items I found were incomplete or they were centered on doing bits/http caching.

The guide does not state to install the brachcache feature and the directions beside this feature state seem to indicate not to install it either.  After I couldn't get even the basic counters and tools to work for branch cache I installed this feature.

I am running this on a 2003 level domain.  Installed the file services roles, enabled the local hash group policy, enabled branch cache directly on the share, copied the files to the client (with enabled BC) and still could not get those BC counters to move in perfmon.exe

I also published the content and exported it...the file size always appears to be 278MB no matter how many files I publish with publish-BCFileContent.

How do I trouble-shoot this thing?

What server OS/Client OS are you testing on? (the client OS must be Enterprise Win 7 or 8 to work with SMB BranchCache)

Are you trying to enable Hosted Cache or Distributed cache mode?

DO you have Offline Files working on the client? BranchCache works really closely with this feature and often you won't see the BranchCache perfmon counters move but the files will be in the Offline Files folders.

You can also use Get-BCStatus to check whether content is making it into the Cache on the client (or netsh br show status all)

BTW Publishing content always seems to result in a 278Mb file - not sure why but I've seen that too..

To get this working you have to be really methodical - if Branchcache doesn't work it's 99.9% certain that you've missed a step in the configuration :-)

We've a few FAQs and a BranchCache page on our website = http://2pintsoftware.com/branchcache

let us know how you get on!

thanks

Phil

Hi Phil,

I am using Windows 2012 and Windows 8.1 Enterprise (I do need enterprise for SMB cache, correct?)

<quote>"Are you trying to enable Hosted Cache or Distributed cache mode?"</QUOTE>

So far I am using 1 server and 1 client so distributed mode.  What I right to enable the branchcache feature on the server (does it matter if I do this for an SMB cache?)

Get-BCStatus has been 1 of 2 methods I have been consistently using to check to see if the cache is changing.  I have been looking at both the server and the client for changes in the cache size and there have been no changes.

My lab does not have WINs but is using the production DNS and I am using an image that was originally built by someone else.  -------I am thinking I should be starting from scratch.--------

I am going to go through the link you sent me (it seems familiar).  If anything above seems off to you or you have other advice I would gladly give it a read.

hi,

So, Ws2012 and Win8.1 Ent will work fine.

Make sure you have enabled the BranchCache for Network Files Role (not just the Branchcache Feature)

Make sure that Hashes are being created by checking the HashCache size using Get-BCStatus

You can manually created the hashes using Publish-BCFilecontent. Not sure why you're exporting content at the moment - you only really need to do this if you are sending content offsite to another location for example.

When you enabled the Hash Publication policy - did you enable it for All Shares?

Once you have the server side setup OK, and BranchCache setup on the client, simply copying the files to the client via explorer, Robocopy, BITS etc will trigger Hash creation if it's not already there.

And don't forget Offline files..

Thanks Phil,

I did all that.

I was exporting to see if I could import into the client and see a cache size change AND to see if I actually had something in my cache.  Unfortunately that continuous 278MB size caused an issue.

Will start again.

thanks.....will post again.

OK.....redid but still stuck.  I am going to be detailed here hoping my oversight can be discovered:

1) I did not install windows updates.

2) I did use plain ISOs from MS and configured them specifically for branchCache

3) I redid the server:

For an SMB branch cache sharing: 1) install the branch cache feature 2) reboot 3) Install-WindowsFeature FS-BranchCache -IncludeManagementTools 4) reboot 5) install-windowsFeature FS-Data-Deduplication -IncludeManagementTools 4) MMC>Local Group Policy Editor>Administrative>Network>LanMan>Has Publication for Branch Cache>enabled for all shares 5) Share folder. Cache>Set offline settings "Only the files and programs that users specify are available offline", enableBranchCace checked. 6) Gave myself full share permissions.

get-bcStatus from server:

PS C:\Windows\system32> get-bcstatus BranchCacheIsEnabled : True BranchCacheServiceStatus : Running BranchCacheServiceStartType : Automatic ClientConfiguration: CurrentClientMode : LocalCache HostedCacheServerList : HostedCacheDiscoveryEnabled : False ContentServerConfiguration: ContentServerIsEnabled : True HostedCacheServerConfiguration: HostedCacheServerIsEnabled : False ClientAuthenticationMode : Domain HostedCacheScpRegistrationEnabled : False NetworkConfiguration: ContentRetrievalUrlReservationEnabled : True HostedCacheHttpUrlReservationEnabled : True HostedCacheHttpsUrlReservationEnabled : True ContentRetrievalFirewallRulesEnabled : False PeerDiscoveryFirewallRulesEnabled : False HostedCacheServerFirewallRulesEnabled : False HostedCacheClientFirewallRulesEnabled : True HashCache: CacheFileDirectoryPath : C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\PeerDistPub MaxCacheSizeAsPercentageOfDiskVolume : 1 MaxCacheSizeAsNumberOfBytes : 528996065 CurrentSizeOnDiskAsNumberOfBytes : 29433856 CurrentActiveCacheSize : 0 DataCache: CacheFileDirectoryPath : C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\PeerDistRepub MaxCacheSizeAsPercentageOfDiskVolume : 5 MaxCacheSizeAsNumberOfBytes : 2644980325 CurrentSizeOnDiskAsNumberOfBytes : 29433874 CurrentActiveCacheSize : 0 DataCacheExtensions: PS C:\Windows\system32> get-bcstatus BranchCacheIsEnabled : True BranchCacheServiceStatus : Running BranchCacheServiceStartType : Automatic ClientConfiguration: CurrentClientMode : LocalCache HostedCacheServerList : HostedCacheDiscoveryEnabled : False ContentServerConfiguration: ContentServerIsEnabled : True HostedCacheServerConfiguration: HostedCacheServerIsEnabled : False ClientAuthenticationMode : Domain HostedCacheScpRegistrationEnabled : False NetworkConfiguration: ContentRetrievalUrlReservationEnabled : True HostedCacheHttpUrlReservationEnabled : True HostedCacheHttpsUrlReservationEnabled : True ContentRetrievalFirewallRulesEnabled : False PeerDiscoveryFirewallRulesEnabled : False HostedCacheServerFirewallRulesEnabled : False HostedCacheClientFirewallRulesEnabled : True HashCache: CacheFileDirectoryPath : C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\PeerDistPub MaxCacheSizeAsPercentageOfDiskVolume : 1 MaxCacheSizeAsNumberOfBytes : 528996065 CurrentSizeOnDiskAsNumberOfBytes : 29433856 CurrentActiveCacheSize : 0 DataCache: CacheFileDirectoryPath : C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\PeerDistRepub MaxCacheSizeAsPercentageOfDiskVolume : 5 MaxCacheSizeAsNumberOfBytes : 2644980325 CurrentSizeOnDiskAsNumberOfBytes : 29433874 CurrentActiveCacheSize : 0 DataCacheExtensions:

ok, doing quick compare the only difference I can see is that

ContentRetrievalFirewallRulesEnabled : False PeerDiscoveryFirewallRulesEnabled : False HostedCacheServerFirewallRulesEnabled : False

On my Lab server (which is working ok) - these are all set to true?

I turned off the firewall via the control panel (service is running, but firewall disabled).

Is that wrong?

Reply:

nah, should be fine - I do that for testing purposes all the time..

what about the latency setting? if all machines are on the same subnet you'd have to set the latency right down to 0 (in the GPO) to get it to kick in?

Just check your Application event log on the server - if there are a ton of events with a source of ESENT there may be a problem - seen that before with BranchCache SMB

Also check your BranchCache event logs for clues..this is strange, but not uncommon so stickk with it

BranchCache is hard to debug as you are finding

The way it works with Offline Files is quirky - sometimes you will see no activity in the BranchCache Cache but the files will be in your Offline Files folder and it populates the BranchCache cache later. It all works but looks like it isn't!

Thanks for the input....I supposed I should have posted a follow up for this.

The use of Branch Cache was abandoned as it was just not working and the documentation is sparse.

Need Consultant for BlogEngine.NET Upgrade Project

We are seeking a consultant to upgrade our BlogEngine.NET instance to the latest version.

Given that this forum is frequented by BlogEngine.NET users and its community, we are hoping to find help for our project here. Please let us know if interested...

Specs follow:

OVERVIEW
  1. Project Background and Description
This project came about out of the need to update the Blog in terms of its look-and-feel and also its functionality. The Marketing team as well as our customers have provided us with the necessary feedback and initiative.
This project will be outsourced to an expert on our particular type of Blog Framework.
  2. Project Scope
    • Upgrade the code-base from BlogEngine.NET 2.0.0.36 to the latest version of the blog software. There aren't many customizations to the code, but whatever has been done, must be retained so that the Blog links work as desired.
    • Upgrade the UI so it is responsive and so it looks very similar to the main Commerce Website. The template can be extracted from the live website. Marketing will provide a new Blog header image to be integrated.
    • Enable several features that will make our customers and our moderators happier to work with the Blog
  3. Deliverables
    • Blog engine code and visual upgrade.
    • Better Spam Filter/Captcha and SPAM Bulk delete functionality.
    • Improvements to Comment Box that allows for threading and replies. If a new widget is integrated, all existing comments must remain on the page.
    • Social media sharing widget: Twitter, FB, Pinterest, etc. The existing sharing method (email) should be removed.
    • Allow for new log-in or authentication scheme. We can use single-sign-on interfaces with other providers such as Google, Facebook, etc. for comments. A meta-aggregator would be ideal, but a single sign on as Facebook or Google would be acceptable. The choice of this module depends on what is available out of the box to BlogEngine.NET.
    • Need the ability for visitors to upload pictures or videos. People love to share pics of their animals.
    • Need the ability to create Polls. Our customers love to participate in polls, and voice their opinions. This would be useful to us for new products surveys.
    • Need a widget for marketing and banners. There we will promote our offerings as needed.
    • Need ability to limit the character count for comments, if needed.
    • All URLs should remain exactly the same by the end of the project.
    • Need a sandbox area, or hosting, to preview all of these changes without affecting the live Blog!
  4. Specific Exclusions from Scope
Integration of the current Log-in Authentication Scheme into the Blog is not part of the scope.
  5. High-Level Timeline/Schedule and Cost
    The timeline is flexible.

Hi  MJaspan,

Based on your description, your case is not related to C#code in specific. I am afraid this issue is out of our support scope.  Thanks for your understanding.

Hello,

You might ask in Microsoft's ASP.Net Jobs forum:

http://forums.asp.net/59.aspx/1?Jobs

As Microsoft's ASP.Net forums are on a different platform, we cannot move the question for you.

However, the best place to ask would be the BlogEngine.NET support.

IS_MEMBER is improperly documented

In my opinion, the IS_MEMBER() function is not properly documented.

The issue is: If you are a sysadmin, then IS_MEMBER('custom_role') will ALWAYS return 0, regardless if you are member of 'custom_role' or not.

This is not clearly documented. We relied on the documentation, and now we need to rewrite stored procedures to handle the special case when someone is sysadmin.

I agree and I will modify the topic. The problem is that when a member of the sysadmin role enters a database, they enter as the dbo user. The permission being checked is for "dbo", not the original login. And dbo can't be added to a database role, so dbo will always return 0 (or NULL if the role doesn't exist).

IS_MEMBER dates back to before the permission system was overhauled for SQL Server 2000. Consider moving your role membership checks to the system tables, such as:

SELECT DP_User.name, ' is a member of ', DP_Role.name
FROM sys.database_role_members AS DRM
JOIN sys.database_principals AS DP_User
  ON DRM.member_principal_id = DP_User.principal_id
JOIN sys.database_principals AS DP_Role
  ON DRM.role_principal_id = DP_Role.principal_id;

That will give you correct role membership though it might be misleading, as the sysadmin doesn't need role permissions.

Reply:

Hello Rick,

thank you in advance for updating the documentation!

Admittedly, I still think that IS_MEMBER should also work for sysadmins, but of course, this cannot be changed retrospectively as it would affect existing applications. So if at least the documentation is getting updated, then one can design new applications accordingly.

I understand the basic fact, that a sysadmin "doesn't need role permissions", because eventually, a sysadmin can overrule everything.

However, you can still assign him roles, and triggers/procedures/views can change their behaviour based on these roles.

Therefore, if a sysadmin wants to use a database "like a normal user", then he gets different behaviour, just and only because he is a sysadmin, regardless of any other roles assigned.

Reply:

It sounds like you have a good understanding of the environment, and with careful testing you can create a system that works for your application.

For others who might read this thread later, I will also point out two more things.

  • In some cases, permission checks are skipped for members of the sysadmin fixed server roles.
  • We encourage customers to move to the more detailed and much more flexible system of granular permissions. This can enhance security. For example a login with the CONTROL SERVER permission (almost the same as sysadmin) will honor a DENY permission (which sysadmin ignores). The detailed permissions are graphically shown in a poster that you can download from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=229142

Windows 7 does not read UDF formatted DVD's

I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and suddenly one day when I tried to read the Windows installation disk Windows explorer did not read it. The only think I saw was a readme.txt file with the following content:

This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification.

I thought that was a hardware problem and I rebooted into Windows XP (I have a multiboot system: Windows 7 64bit, Windows 7 32bit, Windows XP Pro, Windows 10 Preview and OpenSUSE). In XP the disk is being read normally, also in Win 7 32bit, Win 10 & OpenSUSE. The conclusion is that there is no disc or hardware defection, it's a problem of mounting the UDFS in Windows 7 x64.

The same problem appears anytime with any UDF wtitten DVD. In the device properties the file system appears as CDFS.

There is no 3rd party burning software installed and the Windows DVD is original. I have not any other issue, no errors logged in the event system, all installed software is original and the Windows installation is relatively fresh (March 2015).

Does anyone know how to solve this problem without having to reinstall Windows?

Reply:

The last person to post this exact same problem had to replace the optical drive to solve the problem.

You might try removing the Upper & Lower filters in the Windows registry to see if that helps. See info in Microsoft's KB: The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that is running Windows Vista

The page states Vista, but the information is applicable to Windows 7.
