A duplicate name exists on the network
Hi.
Some of our users have started to receive the following message when starting their computer: "A duplicate name exists on the network".
I have checked our Active Directory and theire is now dublicate name in the our domain.
We are running Windows Server 2008 enviroment. With 2 GC server. And we are not using WINS in our system.
The users that experience this problem is all Windows XP with all updates installed.
To be sure, I did the following:
Removed one of the affected computer from our Domain.
Renamed the computer.
Deleted the affected computer name from AD on both our GC servers.
And waited over the week-end.
Started the computer withoout being a part of the Domain.
No error message.
Then made it a part of the domain, restarted the computer, then error message occured.
Even when I renamed the computer while it was a part of the domain, the error message occurs.
How can I solve this error message?
Do today I experience the same problem, even that the name of the computer was removed from our system 6 month ago.
And therefore not a part of our domain.
Looking forward for the solution.

3 Node Hyper- v Cluster with node Majority
Hi ,
we have three hyper-v host in Cluster which is configured with Node majority.. i have two blade chassis where 1 host in first chassis and other 2 are in other chassis. each host is carrying 4 cpu and 256 GB ram. we are testing the Chassis failue scenario for customer and found that once out 2nd chassis (which carrying 2 hyper -v host ) fails the whole custer is down.
can i have a solution for this sceanrio.. can i configure the hyper-v cluster in such a way that if two host fails than cluster should not be failed or hyper- v machine failover on the other available host.. i have three host carrying 256 GB Ram and any host will not be utilised more than 80 or 100 GB of ram.
so by that way i should always have the failover capacity of alteast 130 GB utilization.
Can any body suggest me the best configuration for three node hyper-v cluster.

Node Majority is considered the best choice for quorum model in this configuration. You can survive the loss of a single node, but multiple node failure would cause the cluster to shut down.
The only way you would be able to sustain the loss of two nodes would be to go with the "No Majority:Disk Only" quorum model. This is not recommended as this disk resource becomes a single point of failure for your cluster, but the cluster would be able to survive the loss of two nodes as long as the 3rd had access to the witness disk.

John is absolutely correct "No Mahjority:Disk Only" is one of the options but it is not recommended. However, there is one other option but it does involve some risk. You could change the nodeweight of one of your nodes to 0 and the implememt a node and disk majority cluster. It this case, you could withstand the failure of 2 nodes and still come online on the remaining node UNLESS that remaining node happens to be the node that has the NodeWeight set to 0. In your case I would probably make one of the nodes in 2nd chassis have a NodeWeight of 0 so that if you lost the entire chassis the node in the 1st chassis could still come online.
This is a relatively new feature in WSFC and not much is written about it. Usually it is used in multisite configurations, but it might suite your needs or at least get you a little closer to the level of protection you hope to achieve. I wrote about it in my blog article here.

We have three cluster nodes and those nodes communicate with each other through a dedicated network link using a dedicated network switch. Now suppose that the switch that links the two nodes together fails. Now, the three cluster nodes are unable to talk to one another. Because communications between the nodes have been disrupted, three cluster nodes assume the others cluster node has failed. It is a situation in which the cluster nodes remain online, each thinking that the other has failed.
Three cluster nodes are connected to the same storage pool through an unaffected network link (Fiber Channel). As such, three cluster nodes are still able to interact with the storage pool, and because each node thinks that it is the only remaining node both nodes try to act authoritatively.
What do you think?? any suggestions to solve this issue?

I've been using DPM2012 for quite some time. I just began using Server 2012 RTM .vhd to build some servers booting to the .vhd. DPM and Windows Backup(of course) choke with this error:
The backup operation attempted at '2012-09-13T17:33:33.857183900Z' has failed to start, error code '2155348303' (A backup for bare metal recovery (BMR) cannot be created because a critical volume on the system is located on a VHD. Use the DISKPART command interpreter with the DETACH command to detach the VHD, or reconfigure the backup and remove the option. Then retry the operation. ). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Automatic Selection is nice because it drastically reduces the amount of time spent going through and approving updates. One comment/suggestion I have is there should be an option to exclude Itanium based systems. I have my environment set to automatically approve the categories we want, and only download needed updates, however all the Itanium stuff always gets downloaded even though we have no Itanium servers. When you consider OS service packs, security patches, updates, etc, it turns into alot of wasted disk space until they're removed. Just my .02

We have a bunch of meeting rooms that needs upgrading. And I find it annoying that there still seem to not be an alternative for cabled connect to the large LCD/LED screens we have set up for screen sharing during meetings.
Last time I checked, there were a few projectors that supported Windows Media (something like that) so one can use Connect to a network projector function inWindows Vista and newer. However these projectors were very expensive. Now we face larger screens and I wonder if there are any TVs that support this now?
Or are there any software that I can run on a PC nearby the TVs that emulates the windows media stuff so people can connect to TVs wireless using this feature at their clients?
I see some solutions from 3rd party coming now that simplifies this, but I find it strange that Microsoft has yet to resolve this at a native level.

How about releasing some kind of software that we can run on a small computer behind a TV so it behaves like a network projector or similar so one can connect to it easily? TVs are taking over for projectors anyways, at least at our place..

We have a problem appeared when some of external emails send to our Exchange 2010 emails in Plain text format the message body is completely blank , but when the same external sender send the same email but with HTML format it is appeared properly
this problem appeared on OWA or Outlook 2010

Do you have any anti-virus installed?
If you forward the mail can you see it on the other side?
You can check stationery on outlook:
stationary and fonts and go to the last one (composing and reading plain text, select that font. then select Font color. Automatic should be in there. if not select automatic from the drop down. then click ok and all should work fine

I found the cause of the problem but still cannot solve it
There was a transport rule created "when the from address contain "external domain.com" set "Content-Type with "multipart/mixed"
The above transport rule was created because when users from this external domain send email with PDF attachment the outlook not showed the attachment although it showed in OWA .
The above transport rule solved the old problem "PDF attachment " but lead to another problem " Blank plain text email"
what do you think ???

April 2011 Patches Conflict with Broadcom
When the Dell driver for the Broadcom NetXtreme Family of Adapters, v16.2.0, A01 is installed, the OS gets stuck in a continuous loop on a BXOIS.SYS error. In my case this occurred on the 5708 series Broadcom. I was able to reproduce this in our development and QA environments. The solution is to boot to the Windows Recovery Console and load a command prompt. Then manually delete the offending file (bxois.sys) from %windir%/drivers. This will allow you to once again boot into the OS at which point you must reinstall your network drivers manually.

KMS server Windows 7 Client key addition

Im having issues installing KMS keys to my KMS server.
KMS server is running 2008 R2 SP1
I have just receive a new 50 user KMS licence for for the Windows 7 Enterprise clients
When i try to add the key by running the following command -
slmgr /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
I get on a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition run slui.exe and error code 0xc004f015
My question is therefore how do i add a new license key to the KMS server to allow my clients to activate?
The server is already sucessfully activated.

Hi, you cannot install a Windows7 KMShost pkey to a WindowsServerOS.
The Windows7 KMShost pkey can only be installed to a Windows7 OS that you want to act as KMShost.
If your KMShost is already Server2008R2, and it is already running as a KMShost (e.g. using a KMS_A or KMS_B or KMS_C pkey), you don't need to do anything at all.
a KMShost that is activated, and issuing activations, will issue unlimited activations to KMSclients whenevr the client requests activation.

I have a problem here whereby there's more than a million files in a single folder. Any action that require a listing of the directory will practically hangs on attempt; e.g. opening that particular folder in windows explorer.
I'm thinking if there is any way to split the files into folders, each containing 10,000 files?
If you're wondering how this scenario happens. The front end clients do ftp PUTs into that folder 24/7.

Hello,
I worked in the past in a ISP that had similar problems. The solution was to code a script to get the mass of data and create folders from 0-9 and a-z and put the files inside the folders according to 1st letter. Then for big folders we did it for 2nd letter, inside the folder A for example created other folder structure from 0-9 and a-z and organized file according to the name.
Other option is to count 10.000 files and put them into a new folder numbered 001 002, etc or other ordering method... by counting I mean, script something that runs daily/weekly and do this job for you... let me know if you need some examples in PowerShell (which Windows Version are we talking about here?) here some facts about limits on Windows: http://ask-leo.com/is_there_a_limit_to_what_a_single_folder_or_directory_can_hold.html even if the folder can hold more files the OS / CPU / memory resources to list it can be too much.

let's just say i'm going to do this the conventional way from command prompt; copy every file that starts with alphabet a into a_folder which resides in another volume/disk.
C:\> move a* D:\a_folder
im curious how is this action processed?

Files in a folder are also listed by specific attribute, such as Data Modified, File Name etc. So it should be supported to list "first file" as actually it is the last modifed file or created file etc.

I'm not sure how the file system places each files, but i've got a gut feeling that the first file in a directory may not necessarily be organized by last modified or creation. My deduction goes like this: when you enter dir without arguments in command prompt, it lists files in the directory in alphabetical order. Im guessing it will read through all the files first, then sort them.
That's the problem here, i do not want to read through millions of files.
I think i found the solution here. Should be able to work something out from it.

I dont want to list all files preceding to any action like copying/moving. I wan to avoid listing all files. To list all files mean i have to read through the directory and list the millions of files.

Computer freezing while browsing
Computer seemns to freeze while browsing. Problem seems to occur most when viewing pages whith alot of picture content. Just a simple click of the mouse on curtain pages seems to lock it up instantly. Never had problem til I upgraded to windows 7. Any thoughts

Try updating the drivers including graphics card driver.
Delete the Contents of the Temporary Internet Files Folder.
Check if the issue will occur in Clean Boot Mode and Safe Mode with networking.

But when I run from emulator I get the same webconfig which I got locally. I need the deployable version of webconfig(or a different one than the local webconfig) in azure local development fabric, how could I do that?
