uploading a wriiten program ont the cloud
hi guys
I have an ASP project developed in three tier architecture, with an SQL 2008 back end. I want to upload this project to program onto MS-Azure. I have about 30 forms, 54 tables and around a 100 stored procedures. I have been using the following website for reference
http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/develop/net/tutorials/web-site-with-sql-database/
but i find that it only talks about creating a new project in Azure. I dont have the time to rewrite all this code and create all those tables again, is there another alternative? like can i upload my existing code and databse onto MS-Azure. i am really pressed for time. I also have no past experience of cloud technologies.
Please help people

The Windows Azure SDK help file (.CHM) file has a quick intro to creating and uploading a simple application. You should get WindowsAzureSDK.chm and look at the
Code Quick Launch: Create and deploy an ASP.NET application in Windows Azure
article. It will get you going at least and make you a bit more familiar with Azure.

An update that enables Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 to be hosted in a Hyper-V virtual machine on Windows Server 2008 R2
This is kind of a big one for running Server 2012 or Windows 8 VMs on Server 2008 R2
An update that enables Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 to be hosted in a Hyper-V virtual machine on Windows Server 2008 R2
FYI: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2526776
SYMPTOMS
- You install the Hyper-V server role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
- You create a virtual machine on the Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.
- The Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 virtual machine stops responding.
- The Windows Server 2008 R2 host computer displays a stop error message and restarts automatically. This behavior brings down all other running virtual machines together with the host computer.

UI Inconsistencies in Windows 8
Just thought I'd point out some inconsistencies in Windows 8 that are quite glaring and that I hope are resolved soon. These issues destroy immersion and are just annoying for both long time users and new users alike.
- In the Start Menu, pushing the mouse against the right side of the screen will scroll the screen to the right. This is very convenient if you have a laptop without multitouch like I do. It makes scrolling easy, so I don't have to click the scrollbar at the bottom. However, this feature is not present in ANY other "Windows 8 style" app I have ever used. In Weather, you need to physically click and drag the scrollbar at the bottom, and that just SUCKS. This is 2012, and I'm clicking on scrollbars again. And from a design standpoint, why would you teach me that pushing my mouse against the right side of the screen scrolls the screen, and then not let me do it anywhere else? It's like telling a kid that 2 + 2 = 4, but only on Thursdays.
- The desktop doesn't initialize upon system start up until you click on the desktop app. And no, this isn't a complaint that Windows goes straight to the start screen and not to the desktop. I'm ok with that. This is a complaint that the desktop ISN'T ACTUALLY INITIALIZED until you go there for the first time upon startup. This means that hitting Winkey + 1, my most-used keyboard shortcut, doesn't open up the first of my taskbar-pinned programs. The desktop does not exist until the first time you visit it, so any desktop keyboard shortcuts don't work until you actually go into the desktop for the first time. This sucks because I really wanted to just hit winkey + 1 to load up Chrome straight from the start screen, but I can't. I have to click the desktop button first.
- Segregating search results into Apps, Settings, and Files was NOT a good idea! At LEAST give me the option to keep everything in one place! In Win7, I hit the Start key, type "in my," hit enter, and "In My Life" by The Beatles is playing within a split second. I don't need to touch the mouse. I don't even need to look at the screen. Now I have to hit the start key, type "in my," MOVE MY MOUSE across my 23 inch monitor, physically click on "files," and then click on the mp3. Yes, I know you can just hit winkey + f to search files. But this is moving backwards. I should have the option to have all my search results in one place.
- In the Mail app, the email list extends a few pixels beyond the scroll bar for that list, which just looks funny. I know that this isn't a huge pain in the ass like my other complaints, but it makes me feel like Windows, the most popular OS in the world, doesn't pay a design team. Having misplaced pixels just feels silly.
- Oh god. Making a selection on the desktop by clicking and dragging my mouse to make a box over the icons is like the most fundamental component of Windows. But now I'll throw my mouse to the top of the desktop, click, and drag down to select icons, but INSTEAD I grab and drag the ENTIRE DESKTOP because it functions as a Metro app (ehem, "Windows Style app") and it thinks I want to dock it! I will NEVER want to do that! Give me an option to make my desktop stop acting like a Metro app in that regard! Go try it yourself. Make a selection from the top of the screen, and instead of making the selection, your whole desktop will shrink away from you like it's some insubstantial entity. This is probably one of my biggest problems with Windows 8: I am constantly given the impression that the desktop, the most fundamental part of my expensive gaming PC, is nothing more than a big-screen tablet app. Give me the option to change that. I'll live with the Start Screen. It's not that bad. But stop messing with the desktop.
- I wish I could provide a specific example of this, but I can't remember what app I was using when this happened. I'll try to recreate it as proof. But there's some instances where in a metro app, the scrollbar is several pixels away from the edge of the screen. This means I can't just throw my mouse against the right side of the screen and click to scroll anymore (since my laptop doesn't have gestures, I guess I have to do a lot of clicking), because the scrollbar isn't flush against the right of the screen but a little to the left. So I have to swing my mouse to the right edge of the screen, then carefully and slowly move it slightly left to grab the scrollbar.
I'll stop now until I think of more. I've been using the OS for a few weeks now, and I like it, but there are so many little cut corners that it drives me crazy. You guys should have hired the Zune UI team to work on Windows 8. The Zune music player is the most amazing music player I've ever used, and the UI is just phenomenal.

Another inconsistency for the list is scroll bars. IE10 has thicker scroll bars from Windows Explorer. Both have a different style from Microsoft Office 2010 programs.

According to Mr. Sinofsky's post, " Major changes have been made at each milestone and as we promised, the final release (build 9200, for those tracking) contains many promised refinements" so hopefully the pieces that feel unfinished will be worked out. The ones that are design choices, like light-gray on medium-gray thin scrollbars which are virtually impossible for me to see, or the incredibly limited amount of customization of the start screen, probably will not change.

...but... I already have the release version... right? The version on MSDN and Dreamspark is the RTM, the final release, no?
And that's one thing that worries me most about Windows. The updates. Windows will have a major release (like the release of 7 or 8), but then it will have no big improvements after that. User-wise, I mean. It'll get security patches and critical updates to make it more secure, but in all honesty, the Windows 7 that exists now is basically the same to the end-user as it was upon release. The biggest update Windows ever gets is a service pack, but even those add on only tiny things. I MUCH prefer Apple's update process, where updates will actually add FEATURES instead of JUST bug squashing. One day I would like to turn on my PC to see that I have an update that will allow me better customization of the Start Screen, or more control over how I use metro (I mean Windows Style) apps when on a desktop, etc.
But I'm afraid that just doesn't happen. Maybe Win8 will be different, but if Win8 updates are anything like Microsoft OS updates for the past 20 years, it'll mostly be Patch Tuesday bugfixes. I want the OS to evolve over time, so that instead of huge increment updates, there are rolling updates that bring good change over time instead of all at once four years later, when it's much overdo.
EDIT: just checked. I have build 9200.- Edited by wontstoptalking Thursday, September 13, 2012 4:03 AM

Believe me they have lost all sense and understanding of what usability means. You will find countless such issues. Everything has gone wrong in Windows 8 from Windows 7. For scrolling, I found the mouse scroll wheel the best but that doesn't reliably work in all apps either.
You could use Skip Metro Suite to initialize the desktop as early as possible and to disable the horrid drag from top to close gesture and other parts of EdgeUI. Or if you want to disable only the EdgeUI on the desktop but keep it active inside Metro environment, use Classic Shell. Classic Shell's Start Menu search will also give you unified Programs+Settings results (although not files).
The scroll bar away from the edges of the screen is also happening for me in desktop apps but I can't repro it reliably either. It's all going downhill fast. Msft is doomed because UX is run by clueless people.

64 bit versions of SQLConnect()/SQLDisconnect() are not thread-safe
I discovered that calling repeatedly SQLConnect() and SQLDisconnect() from various thread of the same process can cause a crash of the application.
I observed this behaviour in a testing application running on Windows Server 2003 R2 64 bit SP2.
If calls to SQLConnect() are serialized by means of a critical section, it seems the crash will not occur.

AppStore - Your Apps: A bug + a-lot-of-unused-apps-listed problem
The bug: Installed Apps show both Installed and NOT INSTALLED Apps
Problem 1: I've TESTED OR TRIED OUT 48 apps in 1 month. However, the remain in my respository Your Apps. So how about in 12 months - am I supposed to have 500 apps in My Apps - and when I reinstall Windows 8 I've have to be very particular - like being in Your App Store (instead of Your Apps) .... trying to figure out which Apps I actually use?
May be I can figure that out hacking my backup - how about the consumer?
It should be possible to retire apps or get rid of the overhead from trying out apps - i.e. just put them in a different category in Your Apps.
Problem 2: No way to revoke rights for apps you no longer use? Would be solved with the solution for 1.

Note that the apps with the property 'Not installed' is also listed when the filter is set to 'Apps installed on ...'
I.e. the filter does not tell me what I have actually installed - but what I have purchased (or really tried out ... ever downloaded) ...
... thus:
Expected behaviour: In effect - the expected behaviour of the filter 'Apps installed on ...' does not really exist yet.
Current behaviour: While the current behaviour of the filter 'Apps installed on ...' actually behaves as 'Apps purchased' or "Apps licensed'.

Using GPO to implement IPsec Security
I am trying to design an easy IP Security Policy through a GPO. Securing communications between server and workstations in local area network is my number one goal. When creating a rule, should the source be "any ip address", and the destination be "my ip address"? Thus the source means each workstations ip and the destination means my server's ip address.
Second, the protocol im trying to filter...should this be "Any" ? One video tutorial I saw selected tcp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Reply:
The source and destination definitions in IPSec or Connection Security rules are normally mirrored and are rather seen as endpoint 1 and 2 to define how IPSec is applied when traffic flows between the two end point regardless direction.
To secure traffic to and from a specific server, the IPSec rule configured locally on the server should either include the servers IP address or use the "my ip address" definition in one of the endpoints. The corresponding rule on the clients/workstations must include the servers IP address in one of the endpoint.
If you want to apply IPSec on all IP based connections regardless protocol then using any is suitable.

How to get new mail notification for shared mailboxes in Outlook 2010
Now, this is a common problem for all who is using shared Exchange 2010 mailboxes with Outlook 2010, and possible other combinations as well, I have not tested this with Outlook 2007 or Exchange 2007.
The problem is that if you are given access to a shared mailbox, whenever there is a new email, you don't get the same notification when a new email arrives, as you do in your primary email account in Outlook.
According to Microsoft, this is by design. And there is no way to control it, even if you add special rules to Outlook to display email alerts, it simply does not show up on incoming email.
Here is a possible solution for this. Be aware that this is maybe not suitable for your environment, but it works though.
The standard way (and officially supported):
The Exchange admin has to give you full mailbox access to the shared mailbox with EMC or powershell commands. In Exchange 2010 SP1, there is an auto-mapping feature, that automatically adds the shared mailbox to Outlook when you start Outlook. So no longer need for the end user to manually add the mailbox, as before.
Great, only problem is that you never will never receive email alerts or notification when a new email arrives in the shared mailbox.
The other way (and not officially supported):
Instead of giving the end-user full access in Exchange ECM or powershell, give the user the account information (email address+username) and password for the shared mailbox. In Outlook 2010, go to File -> Account settings and click New.. to create a new Exchange account. In Outlook 2007 it was not supported to have more than one Exchange account, but in Outlook 2010 this is supported. It should take only a few seconds and then then new shared mailbox is ready. Restart Outlook. First time the user logs in, the user will asked to enter credentials for the shared mailbox. Enter it in the form DOMAIN\username + password. After that the user will not be asked for credentials again. That is, if you set the account for the shared mailbox to "Password never expires" in AD. If you don't set that property, the user will be asked again for credential after some time each time Outlook is started.
What about security?
First of all, this is a little dirty trick in order to get the email notification. At first you might think its a bad idea to give the password for the shared mailbox for several users in your AD. Not really if you ask me, they will have full access to the mailbox anyway if you give them "Full Access" permission in Exchange. Secondly, if you restrict the account to deny login to workstations and servers, then there is no simple way to exploit the account. If you also put "Password never expires" and "User cannot change password", there is no way the users can change the password and they also will not get prompted for the password again. If you are a little paranoid, you can enter the password yourself for the user first time after the account is added to Outlook, so the users will never know the password.
I would like to know if anyone else has some comments about this.
Reply:
It is always a bad idea to share credentials between multiple users. Why not simply leave the Full Access permissions but disable the auto-mapping for the shared account? This requires Exchange 2010 SP2 and changing the permissions via the EMS but can also be achieved via ADSI Edit with Exchange 2010 SP1.
Funny enough, I wrote an article on that yesterday discussing a similar issue ;-)

Yes I know its a bad idea to share credentials, but in small shops I don't see the any big problems as long as the user is restricted in AD to login onto maybe a DC, in that case that a normal user don't have the right to logon to a DC, thereby locking the account from login into any server. Maybe not perfect in a juridical setting, but again, not all countries are so strict as the US and requires lawyers to review every new configuration change... :) (just kidding here)
Interesting reading, and I saw on http://www.msoutlook.info/question/585 that you also gave advice to add extra Exchange accounts in Outlook, just as I suggested too. Now you where writing about a mailbox where the user has has access to another user mailbox, or delegated access and then it would be fine.
I don't think disabling automapping would work regarding notifications, as it seems that Outlook only gives new mail notifications to separate Exchange accounts that are listed in Outlook Account settings, and not additional mailboxes the user has access too, regardless of automapping is active or if automapping is disabled and the user adds the mailbox manually to the existing Exchange account (Advanced - Open additional mailbox)
------------------------------------
Reply:
You misunderstood that; Instead of revoking the Full Access permissions (to prevent auto-mapping) and share the credentials for the mailbox with the users so that they can add it as a separate mailbox, you can just remove the auto-mapping property for the mailbox (and leave the Full Access permissions for the users) so that they can use their own credentials. You'd then have the recommended security settings and the notifications :-)I don't think disabling automapping would work regarding notifications, as it seems that Outlook only gives new mail notifications to separate Exchange accounts that are listed in Outlook Account settings, and not additional mailboxes the user has access too, regardless of automapping is active or if automapping is disabled and the user adds the mailbox manually to the existing Exchange account (Advanced - Open additional mailbox)

Another way to accomplish both things, without having to tweak the auto mapping, is add the users to a group and give full access permissions to the group. That way the auto mapping still happens when needed, but you can add the second (or more) exchange account to outlook 2010 as another main account without sharing passwords. This saves from having to change the default behavior of exchange and outlook 2010.

Windows Journal lasso and eraser register in wrong place using a dual display
I am trying to use Windows Journal with my Wacom Tablet display (which acts as both a DVI second monitor and a USB pen input device). I can write with the pen/marker/highlighter fine (including pressure sensitivity). But when I switch to the eraser or lasso tools (including if I use the back end of the pen), my pen inputs are mapped to the wrong location, roughly a few inches up and to the left. This makes Journal with dual display pretty much useless.
Everything works fine with all other software including Windows OneNote, Paint, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, etc., so it seems to be isolated to Windows Journal. Therefore Wacom claims that it is Microsoft's problem, not Wacom's.
Other people seem to have the same problem, whenever using Windows Journal on a machine with multiple monitors. A good description can be found at:

Accessing FTP site with IE9 fails to connect internally but connects externally
Here is a fun one.
I have inherited a Windows 2008 R2 Standard Server that is acting as the company's FTP server. The server has IIS installed and configured with 9 different FTP sites all configured to use host headers. As far as the FTP server goes, everything is functioning well with the exception to one little issue. One customer has said that she used to be able to use Internet Explorer and access her ftp site and browse and download documents and this has always worked well. However now when she tries to access her ftp site with Internet Explorer, she just gets page cannot be displayed error.
After working through a series of troubleshooting steps I have come to discover she cannot connect with Internet Explorer only when she is inside the network. When she is working from home, she is able to access the FTP site without issue using Internet Explorer. But when she comes into work and tries to access the site it fails. However, if she uses Windows Explorer to access the site there is no issue if she is inside or outside the network. FireFox works inside or outside the network as well as FileZilla. The issue is only occurring when using Internet Explorer when inside our network. I haven't taken the time to test other version of Internet Explorer like 8 or 7, but I figured that it could not be that simple. But I have been able to confirm that its not a configuration issue with her client because I can easily reproduce the issue on my computer which is running Windows 7 Enterprise, x64.
Using WireShark and seeing what is actually occuring during the connection phase, WireShark is showing the FTP server is sending a "530 Valid hostname is expected" response back to the client. When not inside the network and connecting across the internet, the FTP server is sending a "331 Valid hostname is expected". My assumption is when inside the network, Internet Explorer is trying to connect anonymously and fails immediately. But instead of a dialog box appearing where you can enter a username and password, the connection dies and IE displays "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".
So I'm at a lost cause as to why this would work externally without issue when there is a firewall in the way which could potentially cause it to fail but not work internally. Again, if using Windows Explorer there is no issue, it only happens when using Internet Explorer.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Hi,
I suggest you try the following:
1. Try the steps in "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error in Internet Explorer
2. Add the website to Trusted Site to check the result
Add to Trusted sites
=============
1. Click the "Start" button, type "inetcpl.cpl" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and then press "Enter".
2. Switch to the "Security" tab, click "Trusted sites" and then click "Sites".
3. Type the URL of the site (such as http://www.microsoft.com) in the "Add this Web site to the zone" box and click "Add"
4. Uncheck the "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" box and click "Close".
3. You can run Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) to troubleshoot the issue.
1. Open Start Menu, then click all programs, select Accessories, open the system tools;
2. Right-click Internet Explorer(No Add-ons), run as Administrator.
Hope this helps

Hi Vincent. Thanks for responding to my post!
Unfortunately the items you listed above did not work. Just to make sure it wasn't my laptop, I also tried them on my desktop and still got the same result.
I was doing some more investigation last night and began to think that maybe something is misconfigured on our FTP server. Currently we are using virtual host headers for our FTP sites, and doing a little more testing last night I noticed that this behavior is occurring on all of our FTP sites. Before I only noticed it with one site because this site is always being accessing by my user when she is inside our network and outside our network. The rest of the FTP sites we host are only being used by customers that are outside of our network.
I'm going to open a new thread under the IIS forum (if there is one) and I'll post a link to this thread so it can be referenced.
But if you can think of anything else that we can try in Internet Explorer, please let me know.
Thanks.

Hi,
This issue seems more related to the FTP side settings, I think it is better to ask the question in IIS forum for more help.

Maybe it is not that frequently needed? And the location can be modified.

Max Meng are you a Microsoft employee? If you are that is a pathetic answer. What does the frequency of usage have anything to do with the fact that the location is in a hidden folder?

Sorry for that, let me try again.
What is a hidden file?
Although you usually can't see a hidden file, it's an ordinary file in all other respects. You can choose whether a file is hidden or visible by changing its properties to designate it as hidden. You can hide rarely used files to reduce clutter, but keep in mind that hidden files still take up space on your hard disk.
Quote from Microsoft documentation.
Hidden files and folders indicate they are not typical items. Usually, hidden files are program or system files that should not be deleted or changed.
Quote from Microsoft documentation.
In computing, a hidden directory or hidden file is a directory (folder) or file which file system utilities do not display by default. They are commonly used for storing user preferences or preserving the state of a utility and are frequently created implicitly by using various utilities. Usually the intent is to not "clutter" the display of the contents of a directory with files the user did not create

Exchange Server POP3 Connection Problem

Would like to know what the error states & how to fix out.
1, Event id: 1101 | Source : MSExchange POP Service

2, Event id: 1030 | Source : MSExchange POP Service

sounds like you have many users behind a single PAT/NAT device.
see if that 2400 value is here:
Get-PopSettings -Server $yourcasserver | fl maxcon*
if so, maybe setting MaxConnections or MaxConnectionsFromSingleIP higher will help
Set-PopSettings -Server "$yourCASserver" -MaxConnectionsFromSingleIP '25000'*note:MaxConnections accepts Int32 but Exchange help says 25000 is max.

Call view without using controller in MVC
Hi All,
I just started work with MVC and few days later I have been asked a question then I really went in lot of discussion and googling as well, but didn't find the right answer. The question is below:
Can we render (or call) view without using controller in asp.net MVC ?
I am just thinking that it may be done by registering an other url routing in global.asax file that will allow user to make request without specifying controller and action name. I may be totally wrong but I dont see any possible solution for it.
So is it really possible or not ?
Please put your views in this discussion .
Thank you to all ..

Get Groups which has permission in a subsite - SharePoint 2007
Hi,
We have a base root site created in SharePoint 2007. We have 2 subsites created with unique permissions.
subsite1 and subsite2.
We have added 2 custom groups to subsite1. - customgroup1, customgroup2.
We have a webpart to show the groups bound to the subsistes.
If we put the webpart in subsite1 it should get the groups - subsite1 owners, subsite1 visitors, subsite1 members, customgroup1 , customgroup2.
If we put the same webpart in subsite2 it should get the groups - subsite2 owners, subsite2 visitors, subsite2 members.
How we can get this, please help.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
you can use SPContext.Current.Web object for getting site or subsite in your webpart and find the code belowSPWeb web = SPContext.Current.Web
SPGroupCollection groupCollection = web.SiteGroups;
foreach(SPGroup group in groupCollection)
{
Response.write("Group Name" + group.Name+"\n");
}
