Upgraded to Windows 8!!
Upgraded my PC with Windows 8 following below few simple steps:
- Downloaded the ISOs from EA x86 or x64, this gave me a license number as well.
- Tried upgrading from Windows 7 x86 to Windows 8 x64, but no go. Its still the same as its previous versions. No upgrade possible from x86 to x64. All you have to do is perform a new installation altogether. (Please someone correct me if i am wrong).
- Then mounted the ISO file with power iso.
- Browsed through the mounted drive located "setup.exe" and hit enter. Cool so Windows 8 has the same file name for setup as Windows 7.
- It showed as preparing the installation and took almost a minute to complete.
- Now it asked for Product Key, i entered the same and clicked on Next.
- Accepted the License agreement to proceed further.
- There appeared a prompt: Choose what to keep. Now here is the difference what i could see when compared to other technet instructions or blogs which explained the installation steps. It actually gave me only two options instead of giving three - "Keep personal files only" and "Nothing"
- But did not give me the first option to select, i.e., Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps. I am still figuring out why was that. For this reason i had sit an hour and a half to configure back all my apps and settings. May be i have done something wrong here during the installation.
- Now it will do an analysis of the system whether is ready for installation and suggests if some changes have to be made (install/uninstall/upgrade) something before proceeding. Luckily it passed me here as it found everything was inline for the installation. I guess the windows update which it starts at the beginning of the installation made the environment ready.
- Then it gives a final reminder of "Ready to install". Of course we can change our selection here. I thought from here i can bring back the option of "Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps". But when i clicked the Change selection option it still gave me only two options of "Keep personal files only" and "Nothing". As i was so eager to install Win 8, i did not pay attention to this and went ahead with "Keep personal files only".
- It proceeded with installation and took almost 20-30 minutes for it to complete.
Now i am up with Windows 8 and loving it. If someone can provide me explanation for the queries i mentioned above, i will be really thankfull.
Thanks,
Jawad Qazi

Hi, when wishing to perform an upgrade from one architecture to another (eg x86 - x64), an in-place upgrade is not possible, so, you must boot from the setup media. For Win8 this means that the option to keep data, settings, apps is not able to be offered.

If the dvd drive is over a year old either the lens is dirty (carefully spray with compressed air) or the drive is physically failing. I would try cleaning it first of course.
Optical drives do get "sloppy" over time, which is one good reason not to use them for backups. They may not even be able to read their own backup.

The "Press winkey and start typing"-defense of Windows 8 apologists
On a small sidenote, why does this one always comes up by the Windows 8 fans, as if it's some sort of unique revelation:
http://news.cnet.com/8618-10805_3-57551433.html?assetTypeId=12&messageId=13258972
I don't understand the big deal about the start menu. Press the windows key [on W8]( that little key next to the <alt> key) and type in the name of a program you want to run. BOOM!!!! there it is, now click on it. Seems pretty damn easy. What am I missing?
In all Windows 8 discussions so far, I've read this all the time, and only in defense of W8. Hey, guys, are you aware that this works exactly like that on Win 7 and Vista, too? Even better, you still have your open programs in focus while you're typing and no full-screen fudge is distracting you out of your context! Wow!
Reply:
But it's just so much BETTER to have everything on your screen completely eclipsed by something unrelated. Having one key to cover up the personal eMail, porn, and Solitaire game instantly, fluidly is highly important!
Work is just SO boring, so stressful, and besides, you KNOW you need to check every few minutes to see who's trying to get your attention on facebook, because THAT's what's important in life. And it's crucial to see whether it's raining outside (it's just so last century to stand up in the cubicle and look out the window; that's something your dad would have done - yuck!). And of course you need to know whether your company stock has fallen yet another half point because for some reason no successful new products have come out lately.
--
In all seriousness, it's as much fluff as you perceive, VBN. Some people apparently CAN get used to it, but there's certainly no compelling reason to do so; it's just no better and in a lot of ways degraded from what we were already quite good at using. Kids who don't want to use the same UI as their parents (because whatever they're doing MUST have been wrong) now have something fresh and new.
I see that Microsoft is showing the sideways scrolling prominently in their TV commercials. It's not hard to imagine that at some point the PR people requested something of the developers, some look, some trademark that would set the Surface apart visually, and so the Start screen was born. Trouble is, they stopped at that and 22 frames in a TV commercial (that's actually more polished than the interface itself) was all it was really good for. I wonder if it ever occurs to the public watching the TV commercials that a bunch of folks dancing around a table and swapping Surface tablets with one another has NOTHING to do with using an operating system or even using a tablet.

Well, sad but true, Noel... But that's tendency whether we like it or not. Computing is no longer what's thought to be computing: computation work. Computing is now entertainment. Personally, I don't know why it should completely replace my bad habit to work on a PC, but that's all we have for know: we are softly pushed by market tendency to forget about working with our PCs. You PC is just consumer electronic device, no more, no less.
Still I admit that idea with hubs and tiles works fine with such an entertainment device as a tablet and possibly I'd like tapping if my laptop had a touchscreen.
That said, I don't think MSFT considers Windows 8 as a complete work, I think it's understood it's just a door to a new era no matter how pathetic it sounds.
Personally, I don't feel new experience is uncomfortable; it just looks so unfinished, so in-progress if we used notorious agile langue. I feel okay with WindowsKey+typing but that's, well, not what I expected. That's possibly of my greater expectations that grew since I first heard of Windows 8 back in pre-Vista days (I mean all that could fluff and web services whatsoever).
What I don't like is that Microsoft seems to be confused as to implementing its own technologies. Take Aero feature. There's been so many complexities with shipping desktop composition to the market and it's just now when market accepted it, and bummer... Microsoft drops this technology out. And that's not the only case. Take Windows Phone 7.x platform and Windows Phone 8.x platform. I like both very much (and moreover, I consider both to be the most easy to use and most fitting platforms for mobiles) but as you may see, many new apps are now compatible with Windows Phone 8.x platform only. Yes, you can install old apps on a new platform but it all looks like the old 7.x platform finished its lifecycle. In short, I like innovations but not that inconsistent.
All in all, I consider Windows 8 as a start point. When starting with this point of view, this is a very good start to go because it opens many ways for a IT market. The question is: will Microsoft itself choose the way it paves for us? If yes, I am first to continue supporting this platform which isn't easy for today because almost every time I start to convince friends to upgrade to Windows 8 I see them don't understand why they should do that 'only because of those quadratic tiles'.
Yet I know why I chose it myself:
- Extremely good memory manager
- Native Wi-Fi stack (Finally!)
- Fantastic expandability thanks to native support for hypervisor.
- A chance to get used to tiles before they appeared in my TV, iron, washing machine (CE likes to copy from IT...)
EH
P.S.: There's been a nice tune back in 70s performed by The Tee Set and these "There's an all kind coloured smoke raising up" lines appear on my mind almost every time I return back to W.eight and look at my Start screen.
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

I'd rather not take a "defeatist" point of view. Instead I try to try to be more actively involved in where computing is going. Perhaps that's because I'm a 36 year career software engineer who's still at the top of my game, and I honestly expect to be involved in (and shaping) the business of computing for as long as I'm around. I need to be able to develop new technology on something.
And no, Microsoft didn't drop Aero, they've just de-tuned it to where it's practically useless. I've said more in another thread on the subject in response to your direct question.
Speaking of being reminded of things... When considering Microsoft's new direction with Windows 8, I'm reminded of Padmé's words to Anakin: "You're going down a path I can't follow."
I don't imagine I'm alone in getting that feeling.
But there is still hope for Windows 9.

(Various) Ways to get back the Start Menu/Button in Win8. . .
The following may be of interest to people who either prefer to or have to use the Desktop UI (not the new Metro or Modern UI) in Windows 8 for their work or play; whatever the reason, a growing list can be found here on the MSFN Forum:
And presently, as of Nov. 17, 2012, 6:49 PM AST time, for those who'd prefer to have a quick look, the list contains the following:

IObit StartMenu8
Win+X Menu Editor (not exactly a Start Menu, but can be used to easily add functionality to the right-click "Power User" menu)
Win8 Charms Gesture + Start to Desktop (bypasses Metro Start Screen, adjusts mouse action for Charms)
Wentutu Start Menu (pin frequently used programs to Start Menu; boot directly to Desktop) -- but see bug report in this thread
Pokki Menu (boot straight to the Desktop and disable the hot corners)
Bypass Modern UI boots natively to the Desktop without pausing on the Start Screen
BringBack (the Windows Start Menu) by Revel (but see the advisory here in item 6)
RetroUI provides a Metrofied Start Menu and can bypass the Metro Start Screen, but also provides a Start Button and a taskbar for the Metro screen and allows for running Windows Store apps in a Desktop window
ExtremeTech has published a method using the Task Scheduler to automatically bypass the Metro screen and go to the Desktop upon boot
StartMenuPlus8 features extensive customization choices, including a "Recent Items" button
Boot to Desktop for Windows 8 and Start for Windows 8, both by tech author Steve Sinchak, can work together for a complete button+menu solution (although the menu is Metro-based)
HP Quick Start -- a major PC maker gets in the act of reviving the Start Menu
8StartButton (in free and paid versions)
StartOnDesktop bypasses the Windows 8 Start Screen
Viva Start Menu (includes a custom Start Button)
Will Microsoft return the Start Button/Start Menu to the Windows 8 Desktop UI. . . I wonder.

There's nothing that says you are on the wrong track like 30 third-party companies all scrambling to replace a critical feature you removed from your product "by design" - and people willing to buy hundreds of thousands of copies of them to get the feature back. What an utter disaster we are witnessing. I think this is worse than Vista.
"Software company Stardock has sold tens of thousands of copies of Start8, a $5 application that restores a fully functioning Windows 7 Start Menu interface to new Windows 8 PCs. Stardock has distributed tens of thousands more free trial versions, says Kris Kwilas, Stardock's vice president of technology."

Will Windows 8 have an XP Mode ?
Or do MSFT think that by then nobody will need it anymore as they'll have migrated all their apps over to Win 7 finally?
I know that I'll still want an XP mode. I have about 10 applications installed on it that won't run properly on Win 7 and I've no desire to give them up, they still do their job very well.

I heard (on the BBC technology show "Click") that it would have a "Win 7 Mode" in the same way that Win 7 has an XP mode. So presumably they already know that it's sufficiently different to need it, and it's not just a mostly cosmetic-plus-tweaks type of upgrade. I guess MSFT know how many people have downloaded the XP mode option and if it's a really small percentage of Win 7 installs, maybe they'll think they don't need to keep it.
It'll be fun if we have to run Win 7 mode on Win 8 so that in the Win 7 mode VM we can run the XP mode (nested VMs).

You won't be able to run nested vms then any more than you can now. That would mean connecting emultated hardware to emulated hardware instead of the physical hardware.
There will likely be no need for a Win7Mode.
Since XP will not be retired until April 13, 2014 and the next version of Windows will certainly be released well before then, I suspect that XP Mode will be supported on the new system at least until XP's retirement. Then I expect the XP Mode download link will be closed. That will not affect installations already running.
A more interesting question is how much longer will Microsoft continue to develop 32bit versions of new operating systems? I see it for the next Windows but perhaps not the one after. 64bit-only has already happened on the server side with 2008 R2, so it can happen on the client side too. 64bits is already the default on new computers shipping.

Well, on the 64 bit machines it is. Am I wrong in thinking that the i3 and i5 processors (which are by far the most popular currently) are both 32 bit ? I didn't look at them when spec'ing my new/current machine, I only looked at the i7 sandy bridge ones which are 64.
I'm still seeing that the 64 bit version of IE9 won't allow you to set it as the default browser though. That's a bit weird. Not that I want to, but weird you can't.

Why would they? You can still download updates for Windows 98, why
would you expect they would pull XP Mode (a component of Windows 7) when
XP goes out of support?
------------------------------------
Reply:
When XP goes out of support MS will pull the plug on XP Mode downloads because they don't distribute a product that they don't support.
You can download the archived updates for 98 but MS has not written any new updates for 98 since 2006. MS also no longer provides even paid support for 98. The archive is there for legacy users but that does not imply that you can get Win98 from MS.
XP Mode is not a component of Windows 7. It doesn't even run on the Home editions. It is an add-on for the business editions and Ultimate. An add-on that can easily be closed to new users by removing the download page.

You'd better tell Microsoft about that: It's listed as a feature of the
operating system on retail boxes, and in the OEM literature.
Pulling it would likely constitute fraud unless they also recall all
unsold retail boxes and refund anyone who purchased Windows 7 under the
belief that XP Mode is not a limited time feature.
It doesn't even run on the Home editions.
True, like many components of Windows 7, it's only available under some
licenses.
It is an add-on for the business editions and Ultimate. An add-on that can easily be closed to new users by removing the download page.
Care to make a friendly wager?
$5 says that XP Mode will still be an available download for Windows 7
Pro after XP's support officially ends. We can pick any date you like,
as long as it's within the full support period for Windows 7, but I'd
suggest 6 months or so to give Microsoft a chance to make whatever
change they want.

What users should do, in that case, is have a copy of XP Mode available for when the time comes. I have 3 copies on CD, plus one on each Data partition on my HDD's, of which I have 4.
And have 4 perfectly fine working copies of XP Mode in 24 bit True Color, each with 2.5GB dedicated to them. They actually look & perform as well, if not better, than the native installs on the older computers that I had.
The glossy monitors give XP a type of Aero style mode, the native 32 bit True Color isn't missed.

Idon't know. At this point, I think Microsoft just wants to forget about Windows XP.
But what would work well is if alongside the Windows desktop in the start screen, there was also a "Windows XP Desktop", and maybe a "Windows 7 Desktop" and "Windows Vista Desktop" also, each really a virtual machine running their respective OS.

I really don't see Microsoft distributing an unsupported OS.
Here's the official answer: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/faq.aspx
Is Windows XP Mode supported throughout the lifecycle of Windows 7?
No. Windows XP Mode is a full virtual version of Windows XP and follows the same support lifecycle as Windows XP. Windows XP extended support phase ends
in 2014.

It is somewhat unfortunate however they don't have a Windows 7 MED-V/Xp-mode experience for Windows 8. MED-V was more than a virtual machine. it seamlessly integrated with the foreground OS, providing support for old versions of IE as well as apps. I'm running Windows 8 now and there are several VPN clients I cannot (yet?) use. I've built a Win7 VM for this, however it would be nice if I could have the seamless integration MED-V and XP mode afforded.

Ok. I have installed W8 on a test machine, which I upgraded from W7. I created a new virtual machine in Hyper-V, and attached the XP Mode vhd I had on W7. I did all the integration stuff. Now, XP works like a charm in W8, BUT I have that damn 30 days activation prompt message in XP.
Well, at this point I give Microsoft those 30 days to find a solution to this activation problem.
I need XP for some legacy hardware for which nobody took the burden of writing the drivers. Plus, I have some old VB6 application to maintain, and I keep the old VB IDE in XP. If MS won't give me a chance to go on using XP mode in W8 (and I don't care if XP won't be supported anymore, for my purposes it is ok like that), I simply won't move to Windows 8 with my other machines (and I am a network administrator, so I mean many machines, even though just a couple of them will still need XP). Giving this opportunity won't cost a cent to Microsoft. Not giving it, will probably cost them some money.

It's a service that is used to instal things in Windows. At least that's what it looks like
I assume that was the question since you did not ask one. If it was not then may be you can elucidate. :)

Windows 7 SP1 Install Error 0x80004005 - A Tricky One To Resolve
Edit: I only use Microsoft Security Essentials, haven't tried turning it off as read several accounts where doing this made no difference.
Everything in this thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/3a2e8c69-ec05-43d9-9ae4-836630b55f82 seems to be applicable to my situation, except still no result. The permissions were wrong on the SQM folder, now fixed. I have put over 20 hours into trying to sort this (there is a flood of reports of the same issue to pick through which takes time, plus trying out various solutions) and finally asking for help. I have tried everything except 1) whatever will fix it, and 2) an upgrade reinstall off cd. If these things are one and the same well could someone please break the news to me?
One possible root cause is that sfc /scannow tells me WMPDMCCore.dll was missing from the package and the media player directory. I have used 7Zip to get it back from the Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit cd but still have the package error. Twice I have tried booting the Win 7 cd to repair mode and run sfc hoping it will pull the dud package out but each time it tells me there is a pending boot repair job so reboot and run sfc again. I noted that I don't get a boot from cd option the next time round so if I do a cd boot, normal boot, cd boot with nothing else I am still told there is a pending operation.
I have run the update checker twice, it reports the same issue, ie:

This is a Win 7 Ultimate 64 Bit machine, it has been rock steady stable for several months. If you want more details of my actual set-up and drivers they are available in the following two links:

The CBS.log is 63Mb, it zips to 1.25Mb. The word "Error" turns up a lot, here they all are (extracted "the hard way" with F3) with the prior and post line. Despite what this seems to say I have certainly run a start-up repair. Also I don't use BitLocker, never have - something which I had been planning to change. So I am up to "clueless" and would appreciate some tips, thank you:

I have also booted from the win cd and done startup repair three times, never got sfc to run as it insistst there is a pending boot maintenance operation but I boot straight back to the cd and open the dos prompt immediately on repair and still that operation pends!
Obviously from the originally posted errors something is going on with Bitlocker which, when I start it, has no options, no drives to lock / check / whatever. What to try next? I did pass Genuine check yet again somewhere in my playing, now we have to provide a code back, at least that hasn't broken!
Is there a way to attach files to these posts? I have made a combo screen shot (with a camera) of the various bits of this journey, key bits refer to system file integrity fail on error code 0x490; there are 7 problem signatures give; 1&2 = 6.1.7600.16385; 3 = unknown; 4 = 24; 5 = External Media; 6 = 1; 7 = BadPatch; OS Version = 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1; Locale ID = 1033;

I am finding it surprisingly difficult to find credible info re the Bitlocker error just mentioned and have stuffed around quite a bit more without success. The error certainly comes up a lot in Google but everyone seems to have it in the "too hard" basket, is that how it is here too?
I have passed the scrutiny of the Upgrade Wizard, it is happy to let me play but alas no cigar!
memtest is fine. By the way the references to Win 7 (recovered) above are undoubtedly from the various BSODs I was getting when I did have faulty memory some months ago, but ever since pulling the dud chip everything has been fine. Well except of course that I do have some underlying issue preventing SP1 going in, the nature of which is being progressively revealed.
Does anybody have a clue what I need to do next? Thank you.

Can you try running the system update readiness tool on the machine? Also, do you have a pending.xml file in the c:\windows\winsxs directory?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Reply:
G'day Jim, yes I did run the Upgrade Wizard and it gives a clear report, but Update Readiness doesn't (see below). I had noticed there was a pending.xml file in winsxs, also poqexec.log and reboot.xml. I had taken ownership of all of them and moved them to C:\ and then deleted pending.xml. I still get told there is an operation pending when booting from the cd and running SFC, I can't find the term pending.xml in the registry so I don't know where else to look for this. Notably when I run SFC in an admin CMD I still get told about WMPDMCCore.dll missing in the store. I have since tried running bootsect /nt60 c:\ which said it was successful, no improvement. I also ran MBR Wizard (http://firesage.com/mbrwizard.php) in case there was something left undone, it reported it had repaired the MBR but no change to my results. Of course I don't know if I ever had an MBR issue, but something is quite wrong!
The CheckSUR.log file also has the same issue with WMP, ie
Checking Component Store

I think the next step might be to turn AHCI off in BIOS. I have just been Googling it and it seems to be a potential issue with SSD's

I have gone round this loop rather a lot now, bottom line is I'm not a lot wiser despite the effort. I suspect the Bitlocker (which I've never used) failure is a core problem, does anybody know where I can go to find out what is wrong with it please?
The key error from the above is probably the below one, if I can sort that presumably the in place upgrade will run and then I can get SP1 in:

I have done approx 7 hours with MS support staff now on this one and the ultimate answer is to do a clean install. Given that this is a heck of a lot of work to get the benefit of SP1, which I wouldn't know exactly what I get for the trouble apart from "a good feeling", I am going to use the "meaning of life" cop-out and decide not to dedicate yet more of it to resolving this ridiculous situation. We did decide the key was the "Setup was unable to determine if BitLocker Drive Encryption is in use" which Google tells me is a problem for others so I am hoping will eventually get sorted.
The basic suspicion was that the underlying fault is with permissions, but running SUBINACLE or making Group Policy changes didn't get anywhere. We looked at a bunch of other stuff over 4 long sessions but I am beyond remembering details now.
One thing I am aware is that references above to WMPDMCCore.dll missing are a red herring. My other PC took SP1 just fine despite having the same fault reported. So Bitlocker is the key. If I am going to do anything else to fix this it will probably be to duplicate the SSD drive onto a mechanical drive and maybe that will allow the upgrade, and stay fixed after copying back. This is just an idea, it might take a while to do but is "set and forget" stuff that can be processed conveniently.
It was a real shame that the effort put in with MS didn't reap a result, but this I guess is yet another facet of the modern world we live in and no point getting cut about it. Of course anybody else's suggestions are welcome, but I kinda suspect we are outside the boundary of most people's knowledge here. Thanks for caring.

I am doing some more work on this now. It is APPEARING that the root cause may be the way I have installed the 120Gb SSD hard disk to the system. If there is a proper way to do this I don't know what it is, I have bumbled through with Paragon Partition Manager and managed to get off a mechanical drive on to the SSD, undoubtedly stuffing something up in the process. For instance I now have no system reserved partition. MS support has been asked to tell me how to put back this partition after I have stuffed it up, this seems to be integrally related to how Bitlocker works and therefore a high probability related issue. Why there isn't decent support to convert to an SSD within the Win 7 64 system I don't know, seems to be a glaring omission of a basic task to me - maybe someone knows how to push that matter in front of the right people...?
My current train of thought is to struggle through getting back on a 500Gb mechanical drive then do a clean install on the SSD then copy the windows partition back to the SSD. If I get anywhere I will record it here. However I would be very interested in anything people would like to add to improve the rigor of this process as it is all a bit hit and miss. It is also very slow going. For instance Paragon will only copy drives and will resize partitions proportionately, thus I am currently waiting 2 hours for it to resize the unallocated partition at the front of the drive (where I hope the recovery partition will go), originally I found this partition would be 100Mb, now I find they go up to 1.5Gb thus I need 8Gb at the front of the mech drive to achieve that on down-scaling when I copy back.
Darn it, I have just realised this procedure may be completely backwards. I need to do a new install to the mech drive and copy the SSD partition over, which Paragon PM seems to be reluctant to do (copy just a partition that is, it wants to do the whole drive). Oh well, if I can get the mech drive working as a boot drive that will be a win and we can work from there. I have already found it won't boot, apparently the cure is to issue the command bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr using the Win7 64 cd (which I have); bootrec.exe is the next port of call if that is a flop, I just mention this for anyone else struggling along for a fix in real time so maybe a bit of info sharing can happen.
Edit: this is the basis for the line of enquiry I am on now, plus of course it seems like a logical path given I have another virtually identical computer with mech drives and no problem: http://www.mydigitallife.info/hack-to-remove-100-mb-system-reserved-partition-when-installing-windows-7/

Thanks danma, I have been there some time ago and unfortunately no answers there. I set the 14 filters as suggested but what I had wasn't reporting a problem. The SUR and SFC aspects are covered in the above bumf, no particular resolutions there.
I finished the copy to the mech drive but couldn't get it to run. bootsect seemed to finish OK but bootrec said there were no windows installations. The Win cd couldn't repair it and wanted to tell Mum but at least it saw the installation. I don't know what happened there as that is basically what I did to convert to the SSD in the first place.... So I used the Win cd to do a new installation on the mech drive just to see if I could get the reserved system partition that way then figure how to get it across to the SSD. Well stuff me there is no extra partition, and I had 8.5Gb at the front of the disk ready to go!
Probably I am messing about way over my head, but at least plugging the SSD back in allows the status quo to return. I have since done some Googling of how one should do an upgrade to an SSD from a mech drive - so far found nothing particularly useful as everything I have found so far is either discussing the merits and issues of SSD's, or talking about new installations. This is a surprise to me as it must be pretty common these days for people to want to upgrade their 'puta's by simply fitting an SSD, which if it can't be a system drive is going to defeat half the purpose of them. I am a bit incredulous at this apparent oversight but will keep looking for this sort of info as I'm sure the cure to my issue is thereabouts.

It seems that your only solution was to do a clean install... Which I imagine you have done by now.
It's unfortunate that the initial information you had- giving you your install method of Windows 7 on an SSD, was in accurate... That is essentially what seems to have created this problem- exactly how? Obviously noone knows!
But it has been well advertised, documented & published since the beginning that Windows 7 has the best built-in, automatic support for SSDs of any operating system... I believe Apple may have finally introduced a "trim"capable driver with Lion.
Nonetheless I certainly understand your desire & motivation to get the most of the drive, etc. I have ruined many an installation in similar pursuits.
The fact of the matter is that for best performance & compatibility of Windows 7 on an SSD one must only (and simply) install Windows 7 directly to the SSD (ideally straight out of the box or after the firmware is upgraded if necessary). No customizations or special measures are needed or advised (such as paragon alignment tool, using SHIFT-F10 to format the drive yourself with any special parameters- cluster size, alignent...) Windows 7 does all of the appropriate & best things on its own. A very important step which is not automatic (at least not immediately up installation) is to run the Windows Performance Index tool- this is how the system gets informed that you have an SSD- and just how to deal with it. This is when Windows adjusts the settings in order to boost performance & maximize the drives life.
One of the settings that I change, one of the few settings that I could tell make a noticeable difference in performance, is to turn off some of the tracing tasks in the task scheduler. There's actually a list I found somewhere of settings or features to change or disable and most had no perceivable effect- except the tracing & maybe one or two others I can't recall anymore...

Thanks AA for that useful commentary, that is good info. I am resigned to the clean install route but am yet to take it. Mostly because, as a tool (even as one I use a lot), it "ain't broke" - really - so I am reluctant to put the life effort into fixing it. I know I have to and will be glad when I do. However I have owner built a house and putting time into the many finishing tasks always seems to be a better use of time. But that's me - whether my excuses will have other consequences well, it is only a computer and solveable anyway. I'm not sure what I am missing out on in SP1 but every other Update installs just fine and the 'puta seems to work without issues so nothing has forced my hand yet.

sorry, i know this thread is as old as heckfire, but...
i'm in a similar boat, although my woes weren't caused by SP1, but just a regular ole windows update. i come in in the morning, the stupid thing won't boot (gets to the "starting windows" graphic, but the flag never raises, or else it appears and freezes, etc. etc.)...
anyway, the common, maddening element is: BadPatch (as reported by startup repair).
and...the SSD. It's an intel x25 40gb value SSD. i've had it since late 2009 (before i started using win7, definitely). never had any write errors or data loss [1] [2], but it took a couple of patch tuesdays to realize that some windows 7 updates just don't play nicely with it, somehow, but the proximate causes are always:
a.) win7 on this SSD
2.) a reboot / accidental power-loss occurs after automatically applied updates (not right away, sometimes days/weeks after, i don't reboot often) which then fails to start
and inevitable result is always:
iii.) windows freezes just before or just after the windows flag displays, no bluescreen, no nothing, bootlog is useless since it shows the last successful thing loaded with no clue as to the real culprit (i think--no clear answer on that, but it seems like it'd have to be)
and i end up having to reformat/reinstall. which you'd think implies bad sectors or drive weirdness, but it's not, i swear, because last time (i.e. a week ago), this FIXED IT:
dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
(as found here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/48d20da9-0535-462f-b177-f30f48992203/)
unfortunately, this magic trick did not work just now, though, but i suspect the only reason it worked last time was because the time gap between updates being applied and the next reboot occurring was very short--usually i only reboot every couple of weeks (or am forced to by the power company, not known for their stellar service where i live).
i *know* it has something to do with win7 updates/patches, (usually, though not always non-graceful) restarts, and this intel x25 SSD.
so my question to you, VinceS2 [3], is: what make/model SSD do/did you have?
[1] kind of amazing because i've had to do a fresh re-install like 5 times now and probably re-written every cell on the darned thing many times over. this drive, moreover, is a dinosaur by SSD standards and doesn't have the fancy wear-leveling and suped up controllers, etc. etc.
[2] not even going to knock on wood because this thing is a beast (see note [1] supra).
[3] i sincerely hope you have some kind of notification turned on for this thread.

Hello, "VinceS2".
I know its been awhile since you posted this, and I hope that you've resolved it by now, but in any event, I wanted to try to assist. First off, Win7 SP1 is really not a "Service Pack" in the usual sense. Its really just a compilation of all the security updates, to date. So, IF you've keep up with the updates, as they've become available, you already have Win7 SP1.
In spite of that, your "Win 7 Ultimate 64 Bit machine" can likely [as in 'maybe'] be updated, but you will probably need to use a reduced services set, say like Black Viper's.
See < http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-7-service-pack-1-service-configurations/ >.
Also, < http://www.blackviper.com/custom-services-registry-file-creation-tool/windows-7-custom-services-registry-file-tool/windows-7-ultimate-service-pack-1-64-bit-custom-services-registry-file-creation-tool/ >, for your own custom set of service settings.
Now, I really do emphasize with you about the "life effort" to try to 'fix' M$'s 'broken' designs. Nonetheless, its your computer, do as you will, and all that.
Still, I think that downloading and burning gparted to disk, then using it to partition your HDD will probably be the best option, to get your disk drive straightened out.
I don't know how 'critical' the "System Reserved" partition is, only that Win7 *does* use it.
Last, I haven't had real good experiences w/ "cloning", but the older-style technology we used to call "copying" works better, IMO. You may be able to locate when of the manufacture sponsored programs to "upgrade" a HDD with. I've got one from Seagate, that I use for that. Usually, at least one of the disks must be the same brand as the manufacturer. Acronis makes Disk Wizard for Seagate and other manufactures have their own versions of the software, also by Acronis. Its supposed to help you migrate to a new, larger disk. Of course, if it can do that you may be bale to convince to do what you want.
Will that work on your SSD?
I've got NO IDEA, except from what I'm seeing online, SSDs aren't ready yet.
Good technology can be difficult to find. Solutions can be even more difficult.
Hopefully helpful, sl0j0n

Got actual work in the future which is not submitted by the users
I'm in trouble. On a specific task, we got actual work in the future that has not been submitted by the users through the timesheets.
The timesheet Status of the user for this period is 'Not Yet Created'.
If I go to the assignements, I can see actual work. Some values like 0,24hrs make me believe that it has been automatically set.
When I go on the timesheet for this period, I also see the actual work.
In the assignment detail, there is no actuals submitted by the users for these dates.
Back to 'Manage Timesheet' the status has been changed to 'Delegate', which is not a documented status.
Project leader didn't try to mark the task as complete nor use 'update project' nor set an actual finish date. But each of these manipulation should be impossible because parameters on the server are well on 'Only allow task updates via Tasks and Timesheets'.
Thanks for you help !

Hi
I regret I can only say that I have seen that also happen.
Mostly in 2007 Environments, but also in 2010.
You can try to open a Support call, but the problem will be that there is no reproduction scenario.
I would remove the "Only allow tasku updates...." option for some minutes. Then set actual work to Zero for that Task and - if there should be "real" actual work - let the user(s) submit their actual work again.

why DOCTYPEs in SharePoint 2010?
Team,
Now days, I am seeing new DOCTYPE piece of code in the master page. Why do we need this keyword and purpose of the code.
Reply:
Hi,
A DOCTYPE is piece of code that is declared at the top of a document that instructs browser or other software to use a specific language to interpret the rest of the included code.
An HTML page without a DOCTYPE is rendered by IE in what's known as Quirks mode.
In sharepoint 2007, this was the much more subjective. However in SharePoint 2010, Microsoft's own master pages all use the XHTML 1.0 Strict DOCTYPE.
It stands to reason that Microsoft's latest controls are built to work best using this DOCTYPE, so its recommended that you stick to it. Please look at the below url for the reference to know about DOCTYPE.

Unable to add server into DAG
Hi
I am unable to add a third mailbox server into the DAG the action fails with the below error. Does any one have any ideas
Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed.Elapsed time: 00:00:06

Just to add a bit more info.
I don't have a disjoint namespace
Once finished there will be 3 servers in the DAG all on different sites so it will be a stretched DAG.
First two members are in fine.
Only one NIC per server as the WAN between all sites only has one physical connection making it pointless to add a separate adapter for replication as it all goes over the same pipe. (user base is not huge 150 mailboxes max)

Exchange Management Shell command attempted:

- Seems like there is an issue with the static IP address configured for your DAG:
- make sure to configure the Static Unique IP address from your MAPI Address Range.
Set-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup DAG01 -DatabaseAvailabilityGroupIPAddress IPADDRESS_IN_MAPI_RANGE,IPADDRESS_WITH_RANGE_FROM_3rdMBXServer_Being_Added.
- Also it appears like a time out issue too.
- check the DAG Tasks file mentioned above for more information and paste the error.
- Port cluster uses is 3343. Attempt to add the Server to DAG and run the command :
NetStat -ano | FindSTR 3343 and check if the port 3343 is LISTENING (or) ESTABLISHED (or) CLOSE_WAIT
- With the issue description, when you attempt to add the server to DAG have you seen what is going on on the Failover Cluster administrator? does it appears like the new server that you are adding has a Red Exclamation for sometime and does it vanish after sometime and it throws the error ?
- Try to uninstall the antivirus on both the nodes and check if you face the same issue.
- Also, if nothing helps, Try to add the server/Node Using Failover Cluster administrator and see if you can add the server to Cluster/DAG.
- Paste errors you get and also the info that you see on the DAG TASKS file shown above or the new file which is generated after you attempt to add the server to DAG next time.

Prestaging Content to a Wireless Lab
I'm trying to work my way around a operating system deployment to a lab of 80+ machines.
These machines are all laptops, with wireless connection to just 3 access points, providing enough bandwith for everyday computing, but not nearly enough to dream of pushing a task through to the machines.
I was looking toward a more hands off approach to imaging the machines, than shutting down the lab for a week bringing a few switches and ethernet cords, and manually booting each machine to pxe to start a deployment.
My idea currently is prestage the os and boot image into a wim, partition the drives of the machiens i wish to deploy to, download the wim to those folders over a series of days, and when ready (i havent figured out how this part would work) booting to that wim and having the deploymnent run locally.
I was hoping someone could help me understand if this was feasible, and also stop me if I'm overcomplicating this (I am a student, and trying to familiarize myself with larger scale deployments in less than ideal environments, as my usual work never involved larger than a 25 machine wired deployment)
I appreciate any feedback anyone can offer.

Here is one option:
On your lab, setup a DP. Configure this as a pre-stage DP. You will have to manually copy the packages to that DP. Configure the DP boundaries such that when machines in the lab need content, then will download it from that DP.
