WS2012 Lanch Game Azure Prize a TOTAL FARCE!

WS2012 Lanch Game Azure Prize a TOTAL FARCE!

The Launch Game people need to be fired. They have dropped the ball AGAIN! I'm one of the so-called "winners" of the Launch Game, and this has been nothing but trouble right from the start.

First, they gave us a bad E-mail address to claim our prize. Next, they have been impossible to reach with the most basic of questions. Are you reporting this prize to the government for our corporation? We should not be facing a personal tax liability on the prize. We need it reported as a prize to the company. Well, no response from them ... no response to any of my questions about this for weeks. Any message you send to the LaunchGame address goes into a black hole. Finally, today we get the last straw.

The way they are giving out these 6-month Azure subscriptions is that you get it as a 6-month trial account ... A SEPARATE, NEW ACCOUNT! Morons. You have to know that many of the Launch Game winners already have production Azure accounts. Why the heck would we want or need a separate account? What do you think? You think we are going to transfer all of our production apps over to the trial account for 6-months then back to our regular Azure subsription? What a bunch of goobers. Fire them. I think MS used some third party jokers to handle this. Fire them, please Scott ... get rid of these jokers.

I don't want this "prize," but now they have given me this second Azure account. Next, they are going to report it to the government. Now, I'll have to pay taxes on a useless prize ... a prize that has been *no* prize to have to claim and deal with. I wish I had never gotten involved in that stupid Lanuch Game. It has caused nothing but frustration and aggrivation, and I don't have time for this crap.

Could everybody dealing with the horror of the Launch Game please Tweet Scott Guthrie (@scottgu) and see if you can help me encourage him to fix this. I mean "fix this" by firing those jokers who are handling the Launch Game! What a farce.

Launch Game Azure Winner VERY UPSET!

I'm one of the so-called "winners" of the WS2012 Launch Game. I "won" a 6-month Azure subscription, but the idiots who are handling the Launch Game never figured out that we would need to have the subscription CREDITED to our EXISTING Azure subscriptions. Idiots. I mean really. It doesn't take a rocket scientist here to figure out that giving us a new 6-month trial subscription is DAMN USELESS to us who are running production apps in Azure.

In addition, it has been impossible to get in touch with a real person in charge of that contest. You can send all of the E-mails you want to the LaunchGame E-mail address ... they go into a black hole.

In addition, it looks like they are going to report these prizes to the government for tax purposes in our personal names, even though it should be reported to our company so that our company can deal with the tax liability. Well, actually, because of the black hole and no replies from them, we don't know how they are going to report the prizes to the government.

Further, because the prize is essentially useless if you are running an existing Azure subscripion, we will be stuck paying taxes on a totally useless prize. I've even tried to E-mail them to cancel the prize ... I don't want a prize that I'm going to get taxed on that is useless.

Can everybody in this sinking ship reply here + send a Tweet to Scott Guthrie (@scottgu) to see if he can fix this ... hopefully he'll fire the moron down there who has been running the Launch Game. I think they used a third party. They've been horrible from day one, when they told us to reply to a message with our details that ended up bouncing. They have been impossible to reach. They have run this program very badly. The whole Launch Game has been a farce and a total waste of my time.

Probably the best comparison chart I've seen is on Wikipedia.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions

I guess I can't vouch for the accuracy though.  I don't know that I've seen a similiar chart put out by Microsoft.  However, to get the Enterprise Edition, I believe you have to subscribe to Software Assurance with Microsoft.

Reply:

Enterprise has more, but neither has ALL the features - there is NO WAY I know of to get a version of Media Center into Windows 8 Enterprise.  I guess Microsoft figures no Enterprise user could possibly need it.  I wonder who develops content...

But back to the original question:  One really has to ask...  Why isn't there an Ultimate edition that actually DOES support all the features?  Many afficionados always will opt to buy top of the line at a premium price.

Common sense really does seem to take a holiday at Microsoft during development of every other version of Windows.

It's all WAY too confusing.

Basically, if you want Media Center - then your ONLY option is Windows 8 Pro. Even though you have cash in hand and are willing to pay Microsoft...they won't take your money unless you are running that particular version which has domain join and a number of features that home users probably don't need (or want to pay extra for).

If you don't want Media Center, then you should go with the Enterprise Edition...because that has all the features of Pro plus DirectAccess, Windows to Go, and others...but that version requires a Software Assurance or Enterprise Agreement contract with Microsoft to obtain...so if you are a home user, you can't really get it "officially".

So...in essence...if you want a version of Windows 8 that gives you all the features...even if you are willing to pay for it...you're totally hosed. Microsoft won't give you that option currently. There is no "Ultimate" version of Windows 8 like there was with Windows 7.

Lame. Totally, inexcusably lame....but that's the way it is.

Current Configuration Manager 2012 capture media proceeds through Sysprep error causing the capture of a non-sysprepped system

General: When the Configuration Manager 2012 capture media runs, it does quite a few things, including running sysprep. If sysprep ever encounters an error, the Configuration Manager capture media should not continue with its process of rebooting the system and running the locally copied boot image to begin capturing the system.

Issue: When the Configuration Manager 2012 capture media runs, it will actually continue with its process even though sysprep logs errors. The capture process proceeds to reboot, run the locally copied boot image and begin capturing a non-sysprepped image. This ultimately causes all sorts of issues during deployment.

Reproduce: An example to reproduce this issue is caused from Microsoft Security Essentials. During 2012, Microsoft Security Essentials was offered as an optional update. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2267621 If Microsoft Security Essentials is accidently installed and later uninstalled, it leaves behind a remaining registry value. This value causes sysprep to fail.

Sysprep Error

Normally, most people would think this error is caused by no remaining rearms. However, for customers using KMS correctly, rearms are not an issue. When slmgr.vbs /dlv is run, the rearm count still has rearms left.

While troubleshooting this error further, the C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\Panther\seterr.log file will show the following error:

Error      [0x0f0085] SYSPRP LaunchDll:Could not load DLL c:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\MSESysprep.dll[gle=0x0000007e]

This error is caused by a remaining registry value left over from the uninstall of Microsoft Security Essentials. The value name is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Sysprep\Cleanup\2D153B43-11B4-461f-AA43-832B2C8B8872

and its value is: c:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\MSESysprep.dll,DllSysprep_Cleanup

In order to delete the registry value, modify permissions to inherit. Then delete the value.

Afterward, sysprep will successfully run. Now that sysprep is running correctly, the Configuration Manager 2012 capture media will capture a sysprepped system.

Connecting to VPN on Surface Tablet Windows 8 RT

We have purchased a single Surface Tablet Windows 8 RT. We have been trying to connect to our Windows 2008 R2 server viva a VPN connection. All of our Windows XP and 7 devices can connect. We are unable to get the Surface RT to connect. We continue to receiver different error messages: Most are Error 809.

We have check the configurations on each device to make sure they are configured correctly and they are. Our plan was to purchase 15 of these devices but if they cannot connect to a VPN they are useless. We are not having any problems with Windows 8 Pro. They connect with no issues.

Am I missing something on the Surface Rt version to connect to VPN?

I am having the exact same issue with the Asus Vivo Tab RT. Was hoping to purchase 16 of these devices next week.  Our other devices, including iOS and Android connect just fine using same settings.

Hi,

I guess your server is using PPTP to serve VPN clients. You may try to explicitly specify the VPN type in its properties.

Also, the following link is for your reference.

I have tried all of these options and still no success. Not sure a Surface RT tablet will work for business if cannot connect via VPN and the Cirtix receiver has problems also. At least Citrix has responded that they are fixing their receiver.

Look at this article.   Windows Server 2012 is a great option for VPN. You can use the Corp Self service Portal to automatically deploy the VPN settings to your Windows RT devices . . .  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj613768.aspx

3rd party VPNS are also supported but may require some setting modification on your VPN server.

Stardock sells tens of thousands of Start8 copies

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2012/11/13/microsoft-sinofsky-fired-windows-8/1702511/

---

"Software company Stardock has sold tens of thousands of copies of Start8, a $5 application that restores a fully functioning Windows 7 Start Menu interface to new Windows 8  PCs. Stardock has distributed tens of thousands more free trial versions, says Kris Kwilas, Stardock's vice president of technology.

"We were having some success with word of mouth before the Windows 8 release, and since the release, the floodgates have been opened, and the demand is surprising even us," Kwilas says. "It tells me that early adopters of Windows 8 feel there's something missing -- a comfort factor for how they want to use their PCs, vs. how Microsoft has decided for them how they should use their computers.""

Gee, who would have thought?

Windows 7 64 bit Enterprise, applications hangs, print spooler crashes (hp deskjet plotters mapped)

Multiple users reporting office 2010 apps, ArcGIS crashing/hangs. Found a common error in EV System logs,

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Spooler service. event id 7011, keywords 0x8080000000000000, process id 736, thread 12544.

All users reporting this problem have hp designjet plotters mapped (mostly t1200/1300). By restarting print spooler and removing the plotter from devices and printers  issue can be temporarily fix. Firmware upgraded on plotter.

Are there more companies out there experiencing this problem?so far no fix from Microsoft and hp on this Issue.

For moderator: Print servers are on Win 2K8 and yes clients are using 64 bit Windows 7 but muiltiple factors involved and yet we are not sure what is causing it. This has been going for few months after migrating to Windows 7 and we have open case with Microsoft and hp on this problem. I would ask the moderators to leave this open so we can find how many more companies are going through this problem and in case someone has find any fix yet.

Keep this in mind that plotters are not as common as printers.

Do you have Interactive Services Detection enabled on the print server?  I've seen the HP plotter driver throw UI on the print server and one needs to log onto the server, switch to session 0,  and dismiss the UI.  I've not had the complaints from the clients and it's always been just a nuisance with the drivers.  HP can do what they what when they do not include the driver with Windows.

IE10 Gaming performance way behind.

A while ago, Microsoft noted that IE9 would be the dawning of HTML5 gaming for them. While IE9 started down a good path, it has not lived up to the hype. WebGL sharers are still missing in IE10 which is really a HUGE miss. This means Chrome and Mozilla will move ahead with modern HTML5 games, while you will be stuck in the past with IE10.

On top of this, the canvas performance for gaming seems to leave a lot to be desired compared to other browsers. There are a couple of really good tools out there for making HTML5 games, one is Construct 2 which ran some benchmarks here. You can see when they put the games into IE10, it was pretty bad. (Granted a lot of this has to do with IE10's lack of GPU Acceleration support)

Does Microsoft have any plans to make IE10 worthwhile for gaming? Where are all the WebGL shaders? Where is the OGG support? When will there be some performance tuning? Without these things, gamers will continue to jump ship to Chrome and Mozilla.

How to read sharepoint documents in iPad(ios)?

Hi,

I have a SharePoint portal with lot of .doc & excel documents.

iOS developers need to read the documents and show that in a pdf format. iOS is capable of reading a document in pdf format and as a WCF service.

How to shadow the document library after converting the documents to pdf?

Is there any inbuild pdf converters avilable?

Thanks

Karthi

Reply:

Karthi,

If you're running into issues with document fidelity on your iPad, you might consider a third party product that is specifically designed to render the documents correctly.  I suggest this because I've had customers who have tried to manually convert all of their documents to PDF.  In the end, they had two problems: 1) all of their storage filled up, and 2) they spent a lot of time trying to manage different versions of the same document.  (For example, an assistant would convert a document to PDF and upload it for an executive.  However, someone would update the original Office document and the executive would end up with a stale version.)

I don't know of any client-only application that does this, but our client/server product, ionGrid Nexus, does what you want.

Creating and Maintaining a Windows 7 Image using Virtual PC on Windows 7 - Part 2 of 3 - Step by Step - Detailed Screen Captures

I am using several steps to demonstrate how to create, use and maintain a Windows 7 Image using Virtual PC on Windows 7 Enterprise.  Part 1 of 3 is available here.  It is important to view Part 1 of 3 in advance of reviewing this Blog entry as it includes the fundementals of creating a Windows 7 Image using Virtual PC.   This is Part 2 of 3 that addresses creation of a 'sealed' Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Image.

Here's some reference vocabulary for this endeavor:

Sealed - the process of using Microsoft Sysprep to 'seal' a Workstation Image for duplication.  The 'sealing' process applies to either Physical or Virtual Machine Images.

Unsealed - the process of updating a Virtual Machine Image and then retaining the Image without 'sealing' for future updates.

Again, because in Virtual PC a series of Files comprise a Virtual Machine it is this fact I capitalize upon to retain both a 'sealed' and 'unsealed' Virtual Machine Image.

Figure 1 - As I begin, here's a quick refresher of the items constructed in Step 1 of 3.  In a Folder titled 'Win7x86_Sealed' I have created a Virtual Machine Hard Drive Image (VHD) titled 'Win7x86_3-2-2010.  This VHD will become a 'sealed' VHD with updates and Applications through 3-2-2010.  Also note the 'supporting files' such as the 'Virtual Machine Settings File' and the 'VPC Backup File' in the folder.

The concept of 'sealing' a VHD includes using the Microsoft Sysprep Process to remove any uniquely distinguising characteristics from the Image.  Examples of characteristics include 1) Domain Membership and 2) Machine SID (among others).

Figure 2 - Next, I create a new Folder titled 'Win7x86_Unsealed'.  This folder will 'store' the unsealed version of the VHD for future modification.  In summary, because this VHD is not 'sealed' using the Sysprep Process it can be 're-opened', then modified and maintained in the future.  I copy the VHD from the 'Win7x86_Sealed' Folder PRIOR TO SEALING THE VHD FILE!  (This is important as the naming convention for the folder can be confusing initially!)

Figure 3 - The 'unsealed' VHD is copied (a manual file copy) from the 'sealed' folder to the 'unsealed' folder titled 'Winx86_Unsealed'.  Again, the 'unsealed' VHD is for storage and future useage.

Figure 4 - After moving a copy of the VHD into the 'unsealed' folder for safe keeping - I 'Open' the VHD to begin the Sysprep Process.

Figure 5 - The Windows 7 Enterprise Workstation Image opens without issue.  I have added the Sysinternals BGInfo 4.16 application to provide the details displayed as the Desktop Background.

Figure 6 - A quick enumeration of the 'Start Menu' indicates installation of only basic Applications within this Windows 7 Enterprise Image.  Next, I will begin the Sysprep Process to 'seal' this Image.

Figure 7 - An 'Administrative Command Prompt' is required to run the Sysprep Process.

Figure 8 - The Sysprep Process is initiated.

The commands required from an Administrative Command Prompt for Sysprep include:

cd \windows\system32\sysprep
sysprep

Figure 9 - The Sysprep Tool v.3.1.4 opens within this Windows 7 Enterprise Image.  It is important to select 'Enter System Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE)' from the 'System Cleanup Action' Drop Down, and 'Shutdown' from the 'Shutdown Options' Drop Down Menu.

Upon completion of this step (when successful) a fully 'sealed' version of a Windows 7 Enterprise Virtual Machine is stored within the Virtual Machine Hard Drive Image file.  This VHD is 'current' with Updates and installed Applications through the creation date (3-2-2010).  I can now duplicate this 'sealed' VHD for creation of any Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Virtual Machines required for Testing.

Figure 10 - Observing the 'Win7x86_Sealed' Folder denotes the 3 Files that comprise the Windows 7 Enterprise Virtual Machine just 'sealed' by the Sysprep Process.

Creating a Workstation Image from the 'Sealed' Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Sysprep Image

Figure 11 - I create a Folder Hierarchy of 'E:\VMs_in_Use\WS_1_Win7x86' for storage of Virtual Machines for Testing.  If you observe the Folder Names it should be clear my intent is to make a Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Virtual PC Image with a Host Name of 'WS-1'.  I will copy the 'sealed' VPC Hard Disk to the '\WS_1_Win7x86' Folder.

Figure 12 - Upon completion of copying the 'sealed' Windows 7 Enterprise x86 VHD into the destination folder where the VPC Workstation Image files will reside, I then 'rename' the VHD File.  This renaming process allows for orderly storage, reference and usage when numerous Virtual Machines are involved.

The next step will entail creating a new Virtual Machine using Virtual PC and the referenced Virtual Machine Hard Disk.

Figure 13 - After renaming the Virtual Machine Hard Disk to match the naming criteria of the Testing Workstation (WS-1), I can begin to 'Create' the Virtual Machine using the Virtual PC Console.

Figure 14 - I begin creation of the new Virtual Machine using the 'sealed' Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Virtual Hard Disk Image by selecting 'Manage Virtual Machines' from the 'Windows Virtual PC' Application.

Figure 15 - Upon opening the 'Windows Virtual PC' Application I select 'Create Virtual Machine' from the menu choices.

Figure 16 - The 'Create a Virtual Machine' Wizard provides the ability to name the Virtual Machine and define the File Path.  Note the File Path to the Virtual Machine Hard Disk Image previously 'sealed' using the Sysprep Process.

Figure 17 - Next, the amount of Memory and desired Network Interface Connection type are selected.

Figure 18 - Here's the important step in using a 'sealed' Sysprep Image in Virtual PC - BE SURE TO SELECT THE VHD PREVIOUSLY COPIED INTO THE VIRTUAL MACHINE FOLDER.  Again, I previously copied the 'sealed' Windows 7 Enterprise x86 VHD named 'WS_1_VHD1.VHD' into this folder for useage.

Figure 19 - Upon completion of the 'Windows Virtual PC' Wizard for creating a Virtual Machine I move to the Folder where the new Virtual Machine is stored. Upon selecting the Virtual Machine, I then select 'Open' from the menu options.

Figure 20 - The new Virtual Machine running Windows 7 Enterprise x86 initiates for the first use.  The Sysprep Options selected in Figure 9 above yield starting of the System-Out-of-Box Wizard.

Figure 21 - This Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Image is starting correctly.  Again, this is a 'sealed' Image created using the Sysprep Process.

Figure 22 - The initial steps in the 'Set Up Windows' Wizard include 1) naming the Computer and 2) identifying the initial Administrator for the Workstation Image.

Figure 23 - Upon inputting a Password for the initial Administrator, along with a Password Hint, I proceed to the next step in the 'Set Up Windows' Wizard for this Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Virtual Machine.

Figure 24 - I select Acceptance of the License Terms next.

Figure 25 - I select the Recommended Settings for Automatic Updates.

Figure 26 - I select the appropriate Time Zone and Time.

Figure 27 - Finally, I select the Network Connection matched to the Computers Current Location.

Figure 28 - Upon completing of the 'System Out-of-Box' Wizard, a very usable Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Virtual Machine is available.  This Virtual Machine is Updated through the Date of creation and includes any Applications I have included in the original 'sealed' Image.

In creating a prepared Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Virtual Machine Image I have the flexibility to create as many Virtual Machines as required for the Testing or usage Scenarios I address.  If another Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Virtual Machine Image were necessary I would simply follow the process again beginning at Figure 11 above through Figure 28.  Of course each of these Virtual Machines require additional System Resources which can be allocated as available.

In Part 3 of 3 I will demonstrate how to 'maintain' the Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Virtual Machine Image that is 'unsealed'.  Specifically, when additional Security Updates are made available I will apply them to the 'unsealed' Virtual Machine Image and then update the 'sealed' Image using the 'fresh' Virtual Machine Hard Disk Image.  Take a look at Part 3 of 3 when you have interest.

Summary: In this Blog entry I focus on 'sealing' a Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Image created using Virtual PC and then using the Sysprep Process. I also demonstrated the required steps to separately maintain an 'unsealed' version of the Windows 7 Enterprise x86 Image stored in a separate Folder.  This Blog entry is Step 2 of 3 in a 3 part series.  In the Part 3 of 3 I will demonstrate how to 'update' the 'unsealed' version of the Windows 7 Enteprise x86 Image stored in Part 2 of 3 for future useage.

Code Review Analysis using MSOCAF

Hi,

When I am performing a code review analysis using MSOCAF for a project, I am getting the following warning.

inbound sync rule not applied

Hello,

Working with FIM 2010 with an ECMA file MA the inbound sync rule is not applied.

In this situation there are several ECMA file MA which work fine. One however is not working properly. The inbound sync rule is not applied.

When a new identity is found in the connected system the identity is created in the CS, updates are also applied to the CS with an Import no errors.

With a full sync there are no errors, however the changes are not synced to the MV nor are the new identities created.

The sync rule is configured to create a FIM resource.

Already tried:

a small change to the sync rule and a full import/full sync from FIM no result.

Refresh of the MA schema no result.

Remove identity from CS and add identity no result.

Is there anything else I can try?

Reply:

This is just some general troubleshooting I usually do, but maybe it will help.

Do you see the rule on the provisioning tab of the user in the FIM portal? If not, you may need to re-trigger the application of the sync rule to the user (ie by removing and then re-adding him to a set).

Once the rule is confirmed on the user, a preview may help after you import the user to the sync. Check that the attributes the SR relies on are all there and maybe check the FIM log in the event viewer for any clues.

I'm assuming you have the flows on the FIM MA for expected and detected rules extensions.

Hello SamiVV,

These are inbound syncrules. They are applied when a new object enters a Connector Space. The rules define attribute mapping between Connectors Space attributes and Meta Verse attributes. So the object is not present in FIM yet.

The preview shows no error, the rule just does not get applied. The strange thing is, this has worked as 430 objects can testify. It suddenly stopped working.

Hi,

Random things to check--that synchronization rule provisioning is still checked under Tools-->Options. I've also had weird experiences where re-entering the credentials in the FIM MA has cleared things up.

Does the preview show any attribute precedence that might be causing a conflict?

Sorry--have not encountered your particular error, so these may not be very helpful.

Thanks,

Sami

Hello Sami,

The option is checked but to avoid problems I unchecked it, full import/full sync. Enabled it again full import/full sync no change in behavior.

The preview does not show any error, just the sync rule will not be applied. I.e. no provisioning for new accounts, no changes for updated accounts.

No precedence conflict, the MA which supplies the values is listed as the correct source, just no changes.

I have restarted the service but not re-entered the password. For other, similar, MA's everything works fine.

Hi,

It seems that installing on DC may result in the above installation failure. What has been installing on this server? If possible, make your server more "clean" to have a quick installation to see whether it can be continued.

I had exactly the same problem. I've traced the problem and found out the the Internal Windows Database service could not be started because the respective account did not have the "log on as a service" right. In my case, the reason was that the "log on as a service" policy object was active for the whole domain. This then replaces the respective object on the local server. The setup of the Internal Windows Database feature then tries to grant the "logon as a service" right to the account assigned to the Internal Windows Database service with no effect then.

It took me almost two days to figure that out. I find it strange that the local policy object is not used in addition with the domain object. Once you enable the object for the domain, all local objects wont' be recognized. At least there should be a check for this in the setup routine. I had the same problem with a different software in the past. Now Ive disabled the domain policy object and transferred the requiered settings to the relevant machines. After that I could install the Remote Desktop Services without any problems.

SBS 2011 POP3 Mail Connector size limits

Hello,

I am having trouble finding the size limit configuration location for the POP3 connector on SBS 2011.  I have a customer who is unable to receive email's larger than 20MB through the POP3 connector.  All other messages are delivered as expected.  I have followed this article http://exchangepedia.com/2007/09/exchange-server-2007-setting-message-size-limits.html in order to increase the size limits on the TransportConfig, Connectors, and Mailbox for this particular user, but I am still unable to retrieve these messages.  I have increased to 50MB and the email messages have attachments totally aprox. 20MB.

Here's the error I see in the pop3service.log.

You can either connect to the POP3 account and retrieve or delete the messages manually, or increase the maximum acceptable message size in Exchange Server.

I assume that I need to raise the size limit on the POP3 connector as well?

Thx!

Relying on the POP3 connector for large emails is not as robust as using SMTP for incoming mail. Is there a reason your customer can't switch to SMTP? Even then 50 MB is a pretty large message.

I am working on moving them away from a 3rd party hosted mail provider.  It is a bit of a political issue at this point, and so I am trying to prove that SBS 2011 is flexible enough for them to use in either scenario.

Given the problems experienced w/ email, SBS 2011 is not exactly wining them them over at this point.

Is there a way to increase this?

Thx,

If you really want to win them over to SBS 2011 for mail then you need to convince them that SMTP for incoming mail is much more robust than the POP3 connector. Since I would never use the POP3 connector for any of my clients I don't have a suggestion on increasing the size to 50 MB. Hopefully someone else will have info for you.

Sorry this is not a Answer, but a soapbox... Post.

If they switch to (IMO) the RIGHT Way of getting email, they won't hav any more problems...
Which is more important? Keeping Status Quo? or doing things the right way an getting emails.

POP3 is always delayed email and they WILL have issues with large files on POP3

Ask if they want reliable email? if they say YES then Getting OFF POP3 IS THE SOLUTION!
Old thinkings must die!

Yes Hosting offers Spam, protection, But for $3/person per year you can third party that.
But IMO you should use something like Trend that is so cheap that has everything you need anyway.

Stand firm GET OFF POP3
and for large Transfers I recommend FileZilla FTP server Free...

Remind them that Exchange was NEVER EVER DESIGNED TO BE A FILE TRANSFER PROGRAM! EVER!!!

Dispite what some Brother in law has been telling them...

To me this is not about SBS2011 being flexable, it's a about doing things the right way that is BEST for thier business....
Faster, better, stronger!

Tell them the current Path, They are going is a path of Destruction, Tell them you are a professional, you can show you a better faster, cheaper and more solid solution than they are using now, and SBS2011 is just one of the tools to do that.

It's time to get ridd of the old theories of 30 years ago, and embrace the 21st century!

Sorry I tend to preach, but Please Push this, they will be much Happier!
Russ

I absolutly appreciate the points on why not to use the POP3 connector, and have pushed this issue as far as I can push, at this point.  I am confident that they will move away from the hosted mail provider in the future.

So please...enough explanation on how we should not be using the POP3 connector.  This is well understood.

Is there a way to increase the POP3 connector size limit?

I was able to get this working by...get this, increasing the size of the SharePoint Fax Connector!?!?!  How in the world is the SharePoint Fax connector tied to the POP3 connector you say, I have no idea???

BTW: This was only half the solution to the problem, as I also had to disable Content Filtering in the Org. Configuration under Anti-SPAM.

What a joke :)

Hi,

The points you described in your previous comment are just why the POP3 connector is not a good solution.

But to explain why it uses the Sharepoint Fax connector is if you know the receive connector configuration relatively easy. The default Windows SBS Internet receive connector receives email on all ip addresses except the internal range. Because the POP3 connector first downloads the email to the server and then delivers to the exchange server it is delivered from within and uses the receive connector that is configured for internal usage which is the Sharepoint Fax connector.

About disabling the Content Filter there are a couple of known issues like message header issues, please see this post: http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2009/07/01/sbs-2008-introducing-the-pop3-connector.aspx scroll some way down for these options (it also says something about message limits).

Beside that also the Content filter is a realy basic filter if you need a good anti-spam solution look for another product. If you have to stay with pop you might take a look at GFI Mailessentials which is a good configurable anti-spam product and has also a much better pop connector included.

Right, and so my dissappointment is in how the connector is not accurately named/labeled.  Rather than naming the connector the SharePoint Fax connector, perhaps we should name it the Exchange Internal mail connector?

Regarding the Content Filter...once I am able to migrate the customer away from the 3rd party hosted mail provider and bring email on-premise into SBS 2011, I will certainly re-enable the content filter.  The 3rd party mail host is providing SPAM filtering already for us anyway, so all is good.

Thx for the opinions.

Hello, I have been using the POP3 connector to have my ISP act as a buffer for my shoddy Internet connection. When my server is disconnected from the Internet, for whatever reason, my company's emails are "held" until my server comes back online. I like this arrangement.

I initially had my ISP setup to MX the email to my server, but I was bouncing emails, after delays of course, back to senders. I thought this was good, at first, but then days would go by before users would know wheather or not emails... You get the picture; snowball effect... I went back to the POP3 connector arrangement for resiliancy.

I too ran into this problem and just solved it for me. I am not a fan of email for file exchange either and I will be looking for a better arrangement, but I have raised the 10MB bar to 30MB for the time being. I had to change this in three places in the Exchange Management Console.

  1. Org. Config. - Hub Trans. - Global Settings - Transport Settings - Properties - Transport Limits (BOTH Max send/receive)
  2. Server Config. - Hub Trans. - SBS Fax Sharepoint Receive - Properties - Max. Message Size
  3. Server Config. - Hub Trans. - SBS Fax Internet Receive - Properties - Max. Message Size
  4. NO CHANGE TO THE CONTENT FILTER, for me...

I didn't change other settings in hopes that (one test so far - success) my users will NOT be able to format emails larger than the default 10MB to the outside world and on the internal network. Testing from gmail to Exchange for me has been a success @ 24MB emails! WooFreekin'Hoo!!!

I will be looking into chimera EFS solution soon as I would much rather come straight to my Org., but need the holding bucket in case of connectivity problems... I hope this helps someone :-)

In a perfect world your soapbox is upheld. But, real world kills it. 2012 and at&t is still only ISP in town and gives max dsl of 6Mb down and 768kb, and your lucky if it is up 14 days in a row. Power sometimes goes down for over 2 hours and pop3 is the only solution. I am not upset with your comment, just that you directed at the customer. It should be directed to the ISPs that determine our choices. Otherwise if you are in a Big city change and put the ISPs out of the mail business. Plus you might save on your monthly bll.

These are for the people in the real world...

  • Org. Config. - Hub Trans. - Global Settings - Transport Settings - Properties - Transport Limits (BOTH Max send/receive)
  • Server Config. - Hub Trans. - SBS Fax Sharepoint Receive - Properties - Max. Message Size
  • Server Config. - Hub Trans. - SBS Fax Internet Receive - Properties - Max. Message Size
  • Turn off content filter. Use block send in Outlook and it will update exchange.

Whilst I agree with you that POP3 connector is not a desirable approach, it's sometimes unavoidable. I have a client who is a multi-millionaire business owner and investor, with 5 separate email addresses he needs access to. One of those is (most unfortunately!) with Australia's largest telecommunications company and, for any correspondence not directly tied to one of his existing businesses, he prefers to use that email address. As we don't control the domain, or anything about Telstra's infrastructure, we have very few alternatives. The most reliable so far has proven to be collecting his mail using the POP3 connector. Once the mail has been dropped into his Exchange mailbox, he can then access it across multiple devices, without having to worry about the normal issues of POP mail to do with duplicating your effort in filing emails.

------------------------------------
Reply:

There is no reason why POP3  collection should be any worse for larger email than SMTP. Both transmit/receive in pure MIME so the amount of data transferred is the same.

Hexamail's pop collector for SBS/Exchange has no size limits and you can configure the duration of each connection, and indeed the time allowed for each email to  download  to allow for very large email delivery. You can also schedule it for 1 minute cycles to avoid delays in receiving email:

I am having the same issue.  For external reasons I also have to continue using the POP3 connector on a client's server and since we switched hosting providers, I am unable to download messages with attachments over 4 or 5 mb.  I have changed every possible message size setting suggested in this forum and still no change.  Always worked fine on old host but we had to leave them for other reasons.  It just seems like such an odd issue when it seems like every setting that controls it is configured properly for way above what I need.  I have everything set to allow 50 MB emails.  And the error that gets produced in Event Viewer is a 208 error, not a specific message size limit error because I've seen those.  This error cites the TCP/IP connection being terminated because of server problems, network problems, a long period of inactivity or incorrect connection settings.  None of this seems to be true because everything else is working fine.  My host said I'm checking my mail too often (every 5 minutes) but I'm not sure that's it.

Reply:

I'll lay 'London to a brick' that the high frequency of checking is indeed the problem.

Easily tested, and modified back if you insist. Set to check hourly and see if it works.

BTW (and pure speculation):

The mail host is probably running a *nix server farm for email. With such farm you hit a random 'front end server' and the server requests the mailbox from main storage. To do so, it puts a 'lock' on the mailbox. The mailbox content is then transferred to the front end processor and manipulated by the mail client (in the case of the POP Connector, downloaded and cleared). At the end of the transaction the front end server updates its copy of the mailbox, sends it back to main storage, unlocks it. Particularly on busy server farms this _takes time_.

Checking the mailbox at a high frequency _forces_ the mailbox into a 'pop lock' condition, where as transactions are occurring you hit different front end servers while the transactions are still being completed on previous servers.

I used to work for an ISP with a pretty busy *nix server farm. People who set Outlook to check for new email too frequently called about 'pop lock' every day.

EDIT: _and_ SBS Dev chose to set a minimum 15 minute check interval in the SBS POP Connector for this very reason.

Super Gumby, thanks for the advice.  I'm going to try extending it to half hour intervals and see if it straightens up.  I'll check back into here if I need additional assistance.  Forums are so great when people just simply offer advice instead of opinions.  If this is definitely the issue then I may just have to move them to another hosting provider yet again because they're a client that's EXTREMELY dependent on constant access to email.
