EMET and Java JRE
I don't have anything to add, but I wanted to start this thread to start to gather experiences of enabling EMET on Java processes.
Not a lot of Google Bing results and I hope this brings some enterprise-specific feedback.

DEP on Java installer causes it to crash. The .msi installer still works, but you have to get that from a machine that just had it installed.
Therefore, I don't recommend setting DEP as Always On or using Maximum Security Settings. Choosing Application Opt Out works fine.

Reply:
The security difference between Always on and Opt-out is marginal. I think it's worth the extra compatibility (pretty sure other issues exists)
It has nothing to do with the toolbars, which install fine with Max settings.

I have yet to experience an issue but am using already installed Java enviroments thus far.
I've enabled max system security settings (minus global mandatory ASLR), and tested java at java.com to see if it loaded. So far, so good and no crashes.
I enabled EMET protection on java.exe, javaw.exe, and javaws.exe.

Read the above link for information on how EMET can assist against these attacks.
The EMET Heap Spray protection is not full proof and will get updated as time goes on, but it should help guard against a large amount of known attacks and reduces the attack surface.
As new methods evolve, so will the protection.
At the end of the day, it's better to have some than no protection.

Custom sign in page for windows authentication
Hi
I need to have my own custom login page for Windows authentication in sharePoint 2010.
I have searched on net , but I could find only Form Based Authentication.
Could you please help me?
Thanks

With Thanks and Regards, Azra
Reply:
Hi Azra,
as far as I know, windows authentication is not working with any login screen, since both methods, implementing windows authentication (NTLM on the one hand and Kerberos on the other hand) utilize a login page. Windows authentication is performed by the browser on the Client-side and the WebServer (IIS) on the server side. If you try to access a WebSite based on ASP.NET and windows authentication is configured, then your browser and the server exchange data within a challenge-response-mechanism (challenge & response about the password of the user logged in) (NTLM 3-way handshake, Kerberos potentially indefinite, since the requested resource may reside at the end of a chain of servers the may be "looooong").
I hope, I am not wrong, and although I am pretty sure, that there cannot be any login screen for a SharePoint using windows authentication, since windows authentication is an attempt to realize SSO.
Anyway, since I know, that the terminological precision is sometimes poor when it comes to authentication, and since windows authentication as a configuration option for web applications on SharePoint also encompasses a so called "Windows Authentication" that comprises Anonymous Authentication as well as at least Basic and Digest authentication, did you probably mean this type of authentication?
I also searched the web for articles and I found this one, which mostly proves me right. Maybe you can look at this and tell us, if it helped you.
Kind regards!
Peter

This is the Screen which needs to appear When user goes to SharePoint Home Site.
If Form Authentication is Checked it will do FBA Else by default it will be Windows Authentication
How can i do this?

Reply:
I guess the screen shows the misunderstanding here. Form Authentication (aka Forms based authentication aka FBA) is a mechanism, where an HTML page is utilized to carry the credentials the the web server in order to authenticate her or him. With Windows authentication, no credentials can ever be asked, since any information about credentials are transported over the HTTP headers, no matter which concrete mechanism is chosen and if credentials have to be typed in (i.e. Basic & Digest authentication), the browser automatically renders an input box and there is no chance for you, to customize that windows, generated by your browser (at least I guess and if that's possible, it's a different hack on IE, FF, Chrome, and so on).
Your picture shows, that form authentication is understood as an option to be taken by the user, which simply is not. SharePoint gives you a choice, which mechanism you want to use, but as soon as you choose windows authentication, your browser and the IIS exchange authentication data without taking the user into account and in the end, you are authenticated or not, depending on whether your Windows account is allowed to access the SharePoint or not.
The custom screen you have shown can only be shown in when FBA is configured, since that is the only authentication method, where you have to type in credentials at all.
Imagine this: Logically when you insert your credentials to the two input fields and do not(!) check "Form Authentication", none of your inputs are really used, because when not using FBA, the browser does not send any of your inputs to the server.
Maybe you want to replace the default page, where you are offered to choose the authentication mode? If so, you probably have to replace the aspx on the hive to modify the experience, but the contents on your picture are - and I am sorry to tell you that - not applying to any realistic authentication scenario. Put simple: no Form Authentication = no credentials to be typed in.
Again best regards!

Such errors can usually be fixed by upgrading the DRM system. Make sure that neither WMP or Media Center are running, and then start Internet Explorer as administrator (right-click - Run as administrator). In IE, make sure that Protected Mode is turned off, and go to

There, click the Upgrade button and follow the instructions. Does that help?

what is the Active/Passive DAG on exchange 2010

There is no such thing as an active/passive DAG in Exchange.
What exactly is it you want to know?

Hi,
You can have several mailbox databases in a DAG - these databases can be active on either one of the mailbox servers (and yoyu can have active databases on both servers).

Reply:
Your backup guys is thinking about what servers may hold the active copies of a given database.
What they normally do is to point the backup policy to a single name. This is the DAG network name e.g. dag-01.contoso.com
The backup software is then able to determine the DB layout and will proceed accordingly. Exchange itself does not use the DAG network name, and unless you have monitoring this is how some people find out that it is offline - the backup fails because the backup cannot get to the name.

As mentioned above i believe that the person that you were speaking to was referring to the active Server/Database. In a D.A.G. your active database is written to and the log files are replicated to the passive DB's where they are applied bringing those DB's current. Backup exec backs up the the DAG by default it backs up a passive database but this can be changed. Below is a link that might better explain what a DAG is and how it works.

MVVM and ADO.NET Entity Data Model
Hello everybody,
I've been reading and researching about WPF and MVVM applications that use the interfaces INotifyPropertyChanged,
but as soon I start on this (I come from Windows Forms) I have a lot of confusion.
Any questions:
- In MVVM Pattern is necessary to add an ADO.NET Entity Data Model to the project?
- And if my DB is MySql and I have many tables (about 40), add the application will become slow?
- What basic elements should have a minimum of Inventory Management application, for example (with MySql DB)?
- But you have a simple application that handles data with some related tables that can be lowered to study?
For now I want to dispel those doubts.
We appreciate your feedback greatly.
Greetings, Solph.

All SharePoint List Views got corrupted
Hi
I am using SharePoint 2010. Yesterday, our network team took backup of whole site collection in production server and restored at staging server. But today I found that one of the lists stopped working. It contains 3 lookup columns and I also created a webpart from this list that I displayed on root site (Exported to Site Gallery).
I am not able to see the contents of the list in any view, but dispForm & editForm are working correctly (checked from designer).
This list contains 100 records in Arabic language that I cannot write. But I can see the contents of the list in the webpart that I created for root site.
Is there any way, I can get my list back?
I found the following error in logs
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Hi Amit,
When you do backup and restore it changes the GUID of the site colletcion.
And the Look up coulmn has two important properties. In one property(propbabaly SiteId) it saves the GUID of site .
Now in your case backup and restoration is happened, it means the Lookup coloumn has wrong Site ID.
I dont think this is related to list forms. In past i have faced same issue. so i wrote one utility to assign the correct GUID to the property of Lookup columns. Also check the GUID'd of master lists.
Hope this will help you.

How to Mount a Mailbox Database from an old Exchange 2007 server to a New Exchange 2007 Server, Old Server is no more available in a network.
Hi,
We have just migrated on a New Exchange 2007 Server from a same 2007 Server, All mailboxes migration is done and working fine. Old exchange is disconnected from a network even a server hardware is dismounted.
Problem here is that I came to know a Month after a Migration that there was one database left on an old server which were used to archive emails globally through journaling.
Now to make it short, I have got a backup (archive3.edb) file on an external drive, I have got the same user archive3 still available in my AD.
Question is that how can I Mount Archive3.edb on my new exchange 2007 server and then to bind a same user mailbox to this particular database so to have access to all the archive emails in that database.

How to Restore a Mailbox Database to a New Server with Database Portability------------------------------------
Reply:
I Agree to Andy. we can use the Database portability.
But on the link which andy suggested on the 6th step we have the details below:
Get-Mailbox -Database <SourceDatabase> |where {$_.ObjectClass -NotMatch '(SystemAttendantMailbox|ExOleDbSystemMailbox)'}| Move-Mailbox -ConfigurationOnly -TargetDatabase <TargetDatabase>
=> Above is only possille when you have the old Server Object\Old database on the ADSIEDIT.
=> In case if we don't have any one of those mentioned above, then the only way to resolve the issue is to Restore the backup, associate the old Edb file to new DB, remove exchange attributes to the user and reconnect the disconnected mailbox to the same user as old which will be shown up under the disconnected mailboxes.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Managed Backup but a Manually taken backup of the database with catalogData on an external usb drive.
I don't either have an Old Server functioning, It is already decommissioned.
I had this database Migrated and Mounted from an Old Server to the New Server earlier during an overall Migration process and is Mounted at the moment which is of 125 GB in size which means it contains data but I may had forgotten to migrate a User Mailbox attached to this database which is a reason I am not able to access those mails.
I tried to add that Mailbox as an existing Mailbox through AD but still When I access a Mailbox, I don't see any emails in it. It is empty.
In my understanding It is a matter of linking a Mailbox to the Database.

Reply:
Did you get an opportunity to refer to the info on the link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998340(v=exchg.80).aspx pasted by Andy ?
1. can you run Get-Mailbox "Mailbox In Question" | fl Name,Database,Server and check which database is it now connected to?
2. Did you provision new mailbox for the existing user (or) did you reconnect the disconnected mailbox after the old EDB File was associated to a New DB? Please explain about the process you followed for provisioning mailbox for the existing user coz this is really important.
Your understand is correct and It is a matter of linking a Mailbox to the Database.

Attempt to reinstall hyper V switch is very short way to VPN malfunction.
Only return to situation before MS network monitor helps. But after some restarts ... I have problem again and again.
I had reinstalled Windows 8 one time because of VPNs problem.
The problen in my first installation was caused by Kaspersky http://forum.kaspersky.com/lofiversion/index.php/t246334.html
after uninstallation Kaspersky changes to network configuration and driver remained active :( (I solved it temporarily by completely clean install of W8).
The second VPN malfunction is caused by previous Microsoft network monitor. And again:
seems that after uninstallation Microsoft network monitor changes to network configuration and driver remained active :(. But with my "expert" skills I cannot find it :D.
I don´t want to reinstall it second time, not sure what happens. So I am using restore point for "repair".

How do I fix "autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK"
I installed Windows 8 Pro x64 (W8) in a dual boot environment with my already installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (W7) and everything worked fine until I realized I had made the first partition (W8) too small. I used the Windows tool to shrink the second partition (W7) and then used "Partition Wizard" to move the W7 install back and then add the unallocated space to extend the W8 partition. Now when I start the machine it goes to the boot menu and will go into W8 with no problem, but if I try to start W7 there is a restart and then it goes to the W7 screen that says "Microsoft Corporation" with the moving bar, next comes the "autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK" at which point the computer restarts and then shows the "Start Windows Repair" or "Start Windows Normally" screen. Starting Windows normally just loops back to the option screen. Running the repair program results in problems being found and allegedly repaired, then I'm told that Windows will finish repairs upon reboot. However, upon reboot I come again to the boot menu, select W7 and again the missing "autochk" message. When I try to run sfc.exe I am always told that there is a pending repair and that sfc.exe can't run, this even happens after a repair has finished or I haven't run a repair at all. Therefore, if the autochk.exe file is corrupted I don't seem to have a way to replace it.
Originally I thought this was a boot issue, but it is clear that the machine is trying to boot into W7 but is stopped by the "not found" program. From the W8 desktop I can access the W7 partition and autochk.exe is where it should be, but whether it is corrupt or not I don't know, because I am unable to run sfc.exe to see.
I attempted to take ownership of the autochk.exe file from W8 and I can obtain ownership, but not change the permissions in order to replace it. And as I can't get W7 to start no matter what I've tried, it isn't possible to work from within W7. I have also read that the "hash" file in the registry that is used to compare the autochk.exe file could be corrupt, in which case no autochk.exe replacement would work.
I am at a total loss and standstill until this is resolved. I have read literally dozens of posts on a number of different forums and my problem is similar to, but not resolved by any of the answers given in any of the posts (except possibly the hotfix I downloaded from Microsoft, but since I can't get W7 started, I can't tell if it would work - KB975778).

"Originally I thought this was a boot issue, but it is clear that the machine is trying to boot into W7 but is stopped by the "not found" program. From the W8 desktop I can access the W7 partition and autochk.exe is where it should be, but whether it is corrupt or not I don't know, because I am unable to run sfc.exe to see."
Tracy,
Thanks for your reply. I should have added to the above that at the time I thought it to be a boot issue I tried all the remedies with Bootrec.exe and also installed EZ-BCD and when these steps failed to rectify the problem, I realized that the problem occurredonly after Windows 7 began to start.
In any case, I have been going around and around with this for several days and so I recently became so frustrated that I decided to reinstall Windows 7 over the pevious install, so the startup problem is moot. After reading a very large number of forums on the subject of the "autochk program not found...", I came to the conclusion that the most likely cause was that the registry key that verifies that autochk.exe is not corrupt was itself corrupt and apparently there is no way to correct the key.
However, this does bring up a collateral issue. I thought that it might be possible to get W7 to start if I made it the defaul OS, but when I did so the boot menu changed to the Windows 7 Boot Menu and I can find no way (short of reinstalling W8 and I've had my fill of reinstalling OSes for this month) to reinitialize the Windows 8 Boot Menu. No matter how I set the OSes to boot or from which OS I recreate the BCD, it always uses the W7 Boot Menu. Therefore, can you (or anyone) explain to me, if it is in deed possible, how to get the W8 Boot Menu back?
Thanks again for your assistance.

Don't install it, it is bugged.
If it's just me then good enough. But after upgrading, I had bunch of issues and could no longer use the Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup -Status cmdlet and the MSExchangeADTopology service started acting strangely.
Looks like a .Net type/assembly wasn't upgraded correctly or not even included in the MSP.
I've put an alert on my blog, it's in French, but please test and relay if yo uhave the same behavior.

Hi
Many thanks for your reply. Perhaps I should have worded my question differently. Does this update make a DAG potentially unstable, could it cause loss of service and will end users be affected in anyway assuming a DAG will be OK and the service stays up? What I am really asking would a installation be at major risk with this installed please?
Many thanks in advance.
