How to Have Edge in Multiple Desktops

How to Have Edge in Multiple Desktops

Let's say one has 4 or Desktops.  Edge is open in #1.  I has multiple tabs (sites) going.  Rt Clk on one of them > Move to new window.  Now, when it is moved to whatever desired Desktop one has Edge in more than one (Desktop)... and just repeat to put it in as many as wanted.  The ability to have the browser open in all Desktops is not restricted to IE... One can do the same w/ Edge.

Glad I discovered this.

Cheers,
Drew

Let's Get Physical!

Well, I have been running Windows 10 since Sept. 2014 as a Virtual Machine.  No longer!!  As of today I am now running Windows 10 as a physical machine.  WOW & how nice... to have all the virtues of physical, none of the fun or limitations of virtual AND to, really, see how this this flies.  The VM was ok but, damn this thing sure shines even more so, now.  Anyway, just thought I'd share my smile @ having it a 'proper' set-up, now.

And this is whilst using Edge, too.  A fast, smooth, snappy, very capable, Windows 10 & Edge.

Cheers,
Drew

PS: It is in the same box as my 8.1 but, not dual-boot.

Ok, so Friday, 2 days ago, I set up a physical Windows 10; as opposed to the virtual machine I had been running since Sept '14 until then.  The only thing is can have multiple instances of IE in Multiple Desktops BUT, only one instance of Edge.  And there's a few things in regard to Edge including some sites not ok, ahem... BUT, other than that, some people will not like, believe or expect, what I am about to say.... and mind you I was enjoying the VM, albeit w/ a few 'challenges'.

Damn, this Windows 10 works well!!  I know I've long said it's easy to use... But, seriously, to see it like this... just so solid, smooth, snappy, quick, great graphics, and simply, everything just works & works well, does what its supposed, what one wants & expects & does it well.  And all so easily!!  Now my webcam/ mic works, :thumbsup2:   And could put MY few things straight from my USB 'toolkit'.  Too bad any whinging or folks experiencing issues or what they call problems or giving low ratings.  I know this installation I have going, now, sure works well.  If didn't know it, already, would never know it was/is a beta.

For all the naysayers & cynics, I just cannot fault its Features, operation of it or its performance.  This being only Build 10074, the GA may be darn nice & exciting, if this is any indication, @ all...

I might mention, again, it is in the same tower as my 8.1 but, not dual-boot.

Where Netplwiz did nothing in the VM it works just fine in the physical machine.

Cheers,
Drew

Windows 10 update

I received this message from Windows.  "We're offering a free upgrade* to Windows 10 for eligible devices, for a limited time. Since you're currently using Windows 8, you'll need to get the Windows 8.1 Update to take advantage of this free offer.  Update now."  I am actually running Windows 8.1.  Should I run the update to Windows 8.1 and upgrade to Windows 10 now?

Thank you in advance for your help.

It depends on how much risk you are willing to accept.  WIn 10 (build 10074) is still beta but is fairly polished and most things work.  If you are willing to accept some risk Go ahead.  I am running all 5 of mine on win 10 with little problems.

You can in fact update from ISO'S instead of through windows update (its faster) and they are here

Windows 10 build 10074 ISOs are available for download:

For Pro edition use this: NKJFK-GPHP7-G8C3J-P6JXR-HQRJR

Windows 10 Pro build 10074 or later  (6P99N-YF42M-TPGBG-9VMJP-YKHCF)
Enterprise edition use this: PBHCJ-Q2NYD-2PX34-T2TD6-233PK
Windows 10 Enterprise build 10074 or later,  (VTNMT-2FMYP-QCY43-QR9VK-WTVCK)

It is not advisable to install Win 10 TP over Win 8.1 because......

Source

Important
    • Remember, trying out an early build like this can be risky. That's why we recommend that you don't install the preview on your primary home or business PC. Unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything.

    •                 If you want to stop using Windows 10 Insider Preview and return to your previous version of Windows, you'll need to reinstall your previous version from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC—typically a DVD. If you don't have recovery media, you might be able to create a USB recovery drive.

    •                 After you install Windows 10 Insider Preview, you won't be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

    • ............................................................................................................

I suggest that you install Win 10 TP either to a virtual machine, or dual bot Win 8.1 and Win 10 TP.

Both methods will have Win 8.1 in the system and you can use it any time you want.
At worst  if Win 10 TP crashes, you can remove it in a matter of a few clicks. No harm to your computer.

Blues get the updates for 8.1 that should include updates for the Upcoming Windows 10, just get the updates for 8.1 only, one of the updates is kb3035583.

Cursor freezing

After the recent Windows 10 update to build 10074 my cursor has started to behave funny. I use the built in track pad on my laptop and now when ever something happens (like I move between desktops or load a webpage) there is a few seconds where my cursor will just freeze. I have tried uninstalling drivers and re-installing them. But that hasn't made any difference.

Can anybody help, it is really annoying.

I am using a HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15-b052sa.

Thanks.

You question cannot be answered at this time because Microsoft has not made the details of the Windows 10 upgrade public.  However, it is highly probable Windows 10 will have its own product activation key.

You will have to wait just as everyone else in the world does for Microsoft's official announcement with the details.

Edge IS the Quicker

Ok, this is admittedly not based on any fancy controlled lab testing, not exotic measuring gear used, no Swiss timers.... just my hands-on observations & my eyes.

I do/did the same things, in the same sites on the same hardware w/ the same Net connection & Edge does everything much more quickly & smoothly than IE. And not by a little, it's blatantly noticeable & substantial.

Not saying Edge is fine "as is" in terms of Features, functions & functionality... it does have a ways to go.  But, as far as stability and being quick, seems very promising.

And, @ least now, it's working (for me).  Won't, @ all, previously/recently.  Glad to finally be able to check into it some.  Have had high expectations & was anxious to work w/ it & whether it lived up or not.  Running physical install now, not, virtual anymore.  Whatever accounts for it, just glad to have Edge working (now) & be able to work w/ it.

Cheers,
Drew

After a WSUS 3.0 SP2 repair on a SBS 2008 system, all computers have not reported a status yet. Why?

Hi there, I am an unpaid Intern for a small non-profit with no IT staff. They have a neglected SBS 2008 system. It has not pushed updates in years, WSUS 3.0 SP2 was broken, and the WSUS snap-in would no longer load. Also, I am new to WSUS and SBS 2008.

After many hours (days & weeks) of research I had finally figured out how to uninstall and install WSUS 3.0 SP2 on the SBS 2008 System. After, a new install of WSUS and then fixing synchronizing issues I have many updates that just will not install (even when approved) and all of my computers including the SBS 2008 server are all listed as computers with no status. Additionally, I keep getting Event ID 13042 and I have extensively researched that, as well and found these articles: (KB 2000598) and (SBS 2008, WSUS Self Update 13042 error even after following KB 2000598) which I did find informative.

Therefore, from what I understand the problems are linked to IIS which has me confused because I do not understand how to configure and make the correct changes to IIS.

Also I tried these steps in this article: (SBS 2008, WSUS SelfUpdate 13042 error even after following KB 2000598)

This is what I get:

http://servername/iuident.cab (Error 403.4) and (Error 404.0) when I put https at the beginning.

http://servername/selfupdate/iuident.cab (Error 403.4) (Error 404.0) when I put https at the beginning.

So please, I really need some kind of simplified instruction on how to configure IIS correctly so WSUS SP2 in SBS 2008 can begin pushing updates that are so desperate in need! Additionally, I am at the end of my internship and I have worked so hard on this and I know I am so close to getting WSUS fully functional again.

Any help at all would be extremely appreciated!

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. :-)

Hi,

SBS can be a little tricky sometimes, so there's a dedicated forum for it, and this thread in it may be useful:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/43d30d2b-3363-44e3-b586-6cb481e943fe/issues-with-wsus?forum=smallbusinessserver

Also:

http://blogs.msmvps.com/bradley/2009/08/27/repairing-wsus-3-on-sbs-2008/

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd443475(WS.10).aspxIt sounds a little bit like you may have mis-configured the port (8530 instead of 80, or 80 instead of 8530) ?

WSUS 3.0 SP2 on SBS 2008 repair
I had the same problem after the update. I tried this from the WSUS30SP2OpsGuide first and this fixed the problems for me without reïnstalling the WSUS software .

Upgrading to WSUS 3.0 from WSUS 2 0
When upgrading to WSUS 3.0 from WSUS 2.0, the configuration points to the port 8530. This causes a mismatch in the WSUS environment because other machines are configured to point to the original port (80) of this WSUS server. In this case, the WSUS 3.0 port should be switched back to 80 by using the following syntax.

Open cmd in admin mode and run:

C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools>WSUSUtil.exe useCustomWebsite false

Open in the SBS2008 admin tool the update service applications and check if the services is available again.

Open in the SBS2008 console the security updates tab and check if behaves normal again.

Spartan/Edge Print Preview comments

I've tried to pass this on using the feedback app, but each time I try
the thing seems to die/disappear before I can send a report, so here
goes...

1. Print preview doesn't resize when you resize the preview window.

2. There's no zoom facility to allow you to see the preview in any
detail.

3. Unlike the main view, preview renders differently in that it seems
to ignore white-space: nowrap CSS.

4. After pressing Ctrl+F - input focus isn't on the entry field, any
typing after Ctrl+F does not go where you think it ought to go.

Most odd... I thought I'd have another go at reporting these issues,
and when I tried this again the print preview initially appeared to
render the white-space style correctly (by not wrapping it).

However, after closing the print preview, then immediately opening it
again, the text is wrapping (when it shouldn't).

Aha, after closing Spartan and re-opening it, the first time I show
the print preview the white-space style appears to be obeyed (the text
isn't wrapping), but once I close print preview (leaving Spartan open)
and redisplay the print preview, the text wraps when it shouldn't.

I don't have to close/re-open Spartan to reset the print preview

Operate SQL 2005 running on Server 2003 in a 2012 domain

Hello,

I am running sql server 2005, in a 2003 domain/forest.  I plan to introduce  a 2012 domain controller (upgrading domain to 2012), but am thinking it may create issues with the operation of sql 2005?

1. Can sql server version 2005 (running on 32-bit Server 2003 OS) run ok in a 2012 server domain/forest environment?

2. If not, will it run ok, if I leave 2003 domain controllers (running mixed mode with 2012) until sql 2005 is upgraded?

Thank you

Hi Dave,

Ok I will try again in sql forum, though that is where I started.

Again my question is if there are any thoughts on running a sql2005 server (on a 2003 windows server) within a domain that includes a 2012 domain controller, meaning the AD schema has been updated.  I currently run 3 sql 2005 servers that are linked, and I know that the service accounts are set with ServicePrincipleNames for the sql service.

1. Would the sql2005 server that runs on a server 2003 standard OS, have any issues operating in a domain that has a 2012 domain controller (mixed with other 2003 domain controllers)?

[Forum FAQ] Show unread items in SharePoint 2010 list

Scenario:

Change the style of items to indicate the unread items of a list on a per-user basis.

Solution:

The example below will show how to change the style of the unread items of a list on a per-user basis, it will mark an item as read for an user when this item is opened by this user in display form page.

1. Download the jQuery API to the "Site Assets" library, then we can reference it in our script like this:

<script type="text/javascript" src="../../SiteAssets/js/jquery-1.10.2.min.js"></script>

2. Create a Single Line of Text column "ReaderIDs" to store the ids of users who have read this item.

3. This is the complete code in list view page(AllItems.aspx):

<script type="text/javascript" src="../../SiteAssets/js/jquery-1.10.2.min.js"></script>  <script type="text/javascript">  //script in list view    $(function(){   ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(sharePointReady, "sp.js");   });    function sharePointReady() {    this.clientContext = SP.ClientContext.get_current();   this.website = clientContext.get_web();   var list = website.get_lists().getByTitle('List1');   var camlQuery = new SP.CamlQuery();   this.collListItem = list.getItems(camlQuery);    clientContext.load(collListItem);   clientContext.executeQueryAsync(onRequestSucceeded, onRequestFailed);  }  function onRequestSucceeded() {   var oListItem;   var ids;   var unreadIDs="";   var listItemEnumerator = collListItem.getEnumerator();    while (listItemEnumerator.moveNext()) {   oListItem = listItemEnumerator.get_current();   ids = oListItem.get_item("ReaderIDs");   if((ids==null)||(ids.indexOf(";"+_spPageContextInfo.userId+";")<0))   {   unreadIDs+=";"+oListItem.get_item("ID")+";";   }    }    showUnread(unreadIDs);  }  function onRequestFailed(sender, args) {   console.log('Error: ' + args.get_message());  }    function showUnread(IDs)  {   var $tr = $("tr.ms-itmhover");   $tr.each(function(k, v){   if(IDs.indexOf($(this).attr("iid").split(",")[1])>=0)   {   $(this).css('background-color','cyan');   }    });  }  </script>

4. This is the complete code in display form page(DispForm.aspx):

<script type="text/javascript" src="../../SiteAssets/js/jquery-1.10.2.min.js"></script>  <script type="text/javascript">  //script in display form    var clientContext;  var item;  var itemId;    $(function(){   ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(sharePointReady, "sp.js");   });    function sharePointReady()  {   Ready(itemId);  }    //get current item id  function getParameterByName(name) {   name = name.replace(/[\[]/, "\\[").replace(/[\]]/, "\\]");   var regex = new RegExp("[\\?&]" + name + "=([^&#]*)"),   results = regex.exec(location.search);   return results === null ? "" : decodeURIComponent(results[1].replace(/\+/g, " "));  }  //query the ReaderIDs column   function Ready(id) {    clientContext = SP.ClientContext.get_current();   var website = clientContext.get_web();   var list = website.get_lists().getByTitle('List1');    itemId = getParameterByName("ID");   id = itemId;   item = list.getItemById(parseInt(id));   clientContext.load(item);   clientContext.executeQueryAsync(onRequestSucceeded, onRequestFailed);  }  function onRequestSucceeded() {   if((item.get_item("ReaderIDs")==null)||(item.get_item("ReaderIDs").indexOf(";"+_spPageContextInfo.userId+";"))<0)   {   updateListItem(itemId, item.get_item("ReaderIDs")+";"+_spPageContextInfo.userId+";")   }     }  function onRequestFailed(sender, args) {   console.log('Error: ' + args.get_message());  }    //check if current user in the ReaderIDs, add current user id into ReaderIDs column  function updateListItem(id, readerIds) {   var oList = clientContext.get_web().get_lists().getByTitle('List1');   this.oListItem = oList.getItemById(parseInt(id));   oListItem.set_item('ReaderIDs', readerIds);   oListItem.update();   clientContext.executeQueryAsync(Function.createDelegate(this, this.onUpdateSucceeded), Function.createDelegate(this, this.onUpdateFailed));  }    function onUpdateSucceeded() {   console.log('Item updated!');  }    function onUpdateFailed(sender, args) {   console.log('Request failed. ' + args.get_message() + '\n' + args.get_stackTrace());  }  </script>

After the page loaded, it will highlight the unread items in different color:

[Forum FAQ] Delete attachment of list item in SharePoint-hosted app using JSOM

Introduction:

Need to delete attachment of SharePoint list item of Host site (or host web) from App page (App web) using JavaScript Client Object Model.

Solution:

The steps in detail as follows:

1. Create a SharePoint-hosted app using visual studio or Napa app in Office 365.

2. Modify the app.js file and add the following code into this file.

'use strict';  var hostWebUrl;  var appWebUrl;  (function () {   // This code runs when the DOM is ready and creates a context object which is   // needed to use the SharePoint object model   $(document).ready(function () {   hostWebUrl = decodeURIComponent(manageQueryStringParameter('SPHostUrl'));   appWebUrl = decodeURIComponent(manageQueryStringParameter('SPAppWebUrl'));   $("#deleteAttachment").click(function (event) {   deleteAttachment("DevSite","ListC","1","Test.html");   event.preventDefault();   });   });   function deleteAttachment(webName,listName,listItemId,fileName) {   var ctx = new SP.ClientContext(appWebUrl);   var appCtxSite = new SP.AppContextSite(ctx, hostWebUrl);   var web = appCtxSite.get_web();   var file = web.getFileByServerRelativeUrl("/sites/"+webName+"/Lists/"+listName+"/Attachments/"+listItemId+"/"+fileName);   file.deleteObject();   ctx.executeQueryAsync(deleteAttachmentSuccess, deleteAttachmentFail);   }   function deleteAttachmentSuccess() {   alert("Attachment deleted");   }   function deleteAttachmentFail(sender, args) {   alert('Failed to delete the item attachment. ' + args.get_message());   }   function manageQueryStringParameter(paramToRetrieve) {   var params =document.URL.split("?")[1].split("&");   var strParams = "";   for (var i = 0; i < params.length; i = i + 1) {   var singleParam = params[i].split("=");   if (singleParam[0] == paramToRetrieve) {   return singleParam[1];   }   }   }  })();

3. Add a button on the app page.

<asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderID="PlaceHolderMain" runat="server"> <input type="button" id="deleteAttachment" value="Delete List Item Attachment"/> </asp:Content>

4. Deploy the app.

Cannot view previous versions of a page in SharePoint Designer 2013

Scenario

In SharePoint 2013/online environment, using SharePoint Designer 2013 to view previous versions of a page in Site Pages, Master Pages and Page Layouts, we will encountered the issue with the following error:

Solution:

This is a known issue and here are two feasible workaround:

1. Use SharePoint Designer 2010 to connect SharePoint 2013 site. Here is the screenshot captured from SharePoint Designer 2010

2. In SharePoint Designer 2013, use the Versions pane in the Page Summary view to access detailed version information of a file. You can access the Page Summary view by:

[Forum FAQ] A custom Content Type Picker in NewForm page of SharePoint 2013 list

Scenario:

Add a Drop Down Menu for picking Content Type when in NewForm.aspx page.

Solution:

The example below will show how to add a Drop Down Menu for picking Content Type when in NewForm.aspx page.

1. Download the jQuery API to the "Site Assets" library, then we can reference it in our script like this:

<script type="text/javascript" src="../../SiteAssets/js/jquery-1.10.2.min.js"></script>

2. Create a custom list and add some Content Types into it.

3. This is the complete code in new form page(NewForm.aspx) of this list:

<script type="text/javascript" src="../../SiteAssets/js/jquery-1.10.2.min.js"></script>  <script type="text/javascript">    var listContentTypes = null;    _spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames.push("spReady");    function spReady()  {   ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(ready, "sp.js");  }    function ready() {   var clientContext = new SP.ClientContext.get_current();   var oList = clientContext.get_web().get_lists().getById(_spPageContextInfo.pageListId);     //get the content types and load the collection   listContentTypes = oList.get_contentTypes();   clientContext.load(listContentTypes);      clientContext.executeQueryAsync(Function.createDelegate(this, getContentTypeOfCurrentItemSucceeded), Function.createDelegate(this, onQueryFailed));  }     function getContentTypeOfCurrentItemSucceeded(sender, args)   {    var ct_enumerator = listContentTypes.getEnumerator();   var hAry = {};     while (ct_enumerator.moveNext())    {   var ct = ct_enumerator.get_current();   hAry[ct.get_id().get_stringValue()] = ct.get_name();   }     var $t = $("#onetIDListForm");   createSelectBefore($t, hAry);  }    function onQueryFailed()  {   console.log("Failed");  }    function createSelectBefore($t, hash)  {   var sel1 = "<span>Content Type</span><select id='ctp'>";   var option1 = "<option title='";   var option2 = "'>";   var option3 = "</option>";   var sel2 = "</select><br>";     var t1 = sel1;      var len = hash.length;   for(var name in hash)   {   t1+=option1+name+option2+hash[name]+option3;   }   t1+=sel2;   $(t1).insertBefore($t);      //selected an option   var s = location.search;      //if not the default content type   if(s.indexOf(getParameterByName("ContentTypeId"))>0)   {   $("#ctp").val(hash[getParameterByName("ContentTypeId")]);   }   //if it is the default content type, get the first result   else   {   $("#ctp").val(hash[first(hash)]);   }     //onchange event   $("#ctp").change(function(){     //get contenttypeid, redirect   window.location = _spPageContextInfo.serverRequestPath+"?ContentTypeId="+$(this).find("option:selected").attr('title');     });  }    function getParameterByName(name) {   name = name.replace(/[\[]/, "\\[").replace(/[\]]/, "\\]");   var regex = new RegExp("[\\?&]" + name + "=([^&#]*)"),   results = regex.exec(location.search);   return results === null ? "" : decodeURIComponent(results[1].replace(/\+/g, " "));  }    function first(obj) {   for (var a in obj) return a;  }     </script>

When in NewForm.aspx page, there will be a Content Type Picker at the head of the form:

Choose an option:

The corresponding fields show up:

Happy coding!

[Forum FAQ] Some examples about using JSLink in SharePoint 2013

Introduction:

Working with the SharePoint UI has always been something of a challenge for developers. However, a new feature in SharePoint 2013 called JSLink offloads the burden of using XSLT and provides a much easier and more responsive way to display custom fields on the client. JSLink is a property that controls rendering of fields, items and even Web Parts through a JavaScript file.

This article will give three demo scenarios as many users want to achieve these goals.

Ex1.

Users want to open the document in edit mode directly in client application by clicking the Name of the file in SharePoint 2013 document library.

Solution:

(function () {   var overrideCtx = {};   overrideCtx.Templates = {};   overrideCtx.Templates.Fields = {   'LinkFilename': { 'View' : CustomLink }   };   SPClientTemplates.TemplateManager.RegisterTemplateOverrides(overrideCtx);  })();  function CustomLink(ctx){   var link = ctx.CurrentItem["LinkFilename"];    var value = ctx.CurrentItem["FileLeafRef"];    var link1=value.substring(0,value.lastIndexOf("/"));   var html="";   if((value.indexOf("."))>-1){   var html="<a onclick='editDocumentWithProgID2('"+link+"', '', 'SharePoint.OpenDocuments', '0', '"+link1+"', '0')'>"+val+"</a>";   }   return html;  }

Ex2:

Users want to change the column width using JSLink in SharePoint list/library view.

Solution:

(function () {   var overrideCtx = {};   overrideCtx.Templates = {};   overrideCtx.OnPostRender = postRenderHandler;   SPClientTemplates.TemplateManager.RegisterTemplateOverrides(overrideCtx);  })();  function postRenderHandler(ctx){   var ths = document.querySelectorAll('th.ms-vh2');   for(var i=0;i<ths.length;i++)   {   if("Title"===ths[i].textContent.trim())//change "Title" to the column name which you want to change the column width   {   console.log(ths[i]);   ths[i].setAttribute("width","300px");   break;   }   }  }

Ex3:

Users want to change the Title field to be a hyperlink as Name field for documents in Document library using JSLink.

Solution:

(function () {   var overrideCtx = {};   overrideCtx.Templates = {};   overrideCtx.Templates.Fields = {   'Title': { 'View' : CustomLink }   };   SPClientTemplates.TemplateManager.RegisterTemplateOverrides(overrideCtx);  })();  function CustomLink(ctx){   var link = ctx.CurrentItem["FileLeafRef"];    var value =ctx.CurrentItem["Title"]   var html="";   if(value!=""){   var html= "<a href='"+link+"'>"+value+"</a>";   }   return html;  }

refreshing error

Hi,

So i have a workbook set up so i can do an analysis of some exported data.

The exported excel file is always named the same and replaces the previous file.

When i refresh the connection i get:

We couldn't refresh the connection. Please go to existing connections and verify they connect to the file or server.

Even though the file is identical in every way. It takes a little bit of time to set up all the calculated fields and columns.

when i move the original exported file back it works fine!?

is there a work around so i can keep all my work and swap the connected file?

Thanks

Dan

Hello Dan,

Have you tried to modify the existing connection setting to see if it works then?

Hi Olaf

Yea, I have tried that. Tested the connection, which says it was fine, Then clicked refresh and that is when the error comes up.

Make sure one specific item is always selected in a slicer, whilst allowing multiple others to be selected also

Hypothetically, lets say the items in my slicer are "conforming" "scratched" "dented" "broken" (and many more).

I have a slicer connected to a pivot chart that relies on "conforming" always being selected, along with one of the defects.

Is there any way to force the slicer to always have "conforming" selected, whilst allowing the user to select an additional item (or more)?

Thanks in advance!
