Hyper v 2012 failover cluster

Hyper v 2012 failover cluster

I am really getting nowhere with this. I am trying to test the new hyper v server 2012 (the free one) and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to enable the failover cluster feature. I do not even see that otpion in the sconfig like it was in hyper v 2008 r2 sconfig. I found this post which mentions the same thing

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/afc12504-520f-410f-9876-110bb00ed626

But I still cannot see hwo to enable the feature.

Thanks,

Thomas

So I did this as well I still do not wee the feature in SCONFIG.  I've enabled all Failover-Cluster features. When I add a 2012 HyperV server I get OpenService 'RemoteRegistry' failed. Any Ideas?

Yes that enabled it for me but I never saw it in sconfig. You can ser its service running after running that command. Also have you enabled the remote management? This may be why you are getting that error.

Storage Spaces a bit of a nightmare

So i heard about Storage Spaces just as my 1TB internal disk had around 1GB left on it, while my 1TB USB drive lay there doing nothing. This is perfect- i thought. So i create a storage pool, no resiliency, with my internal SATA drive, and my Seagate GoFlex external USB 3.0 drive. And the problems began. The first warning message igot on the USB drive was this: Warning stale; enable pool. So i restarted, hoping my data was not lost, and i was all okay again.

So today i came back to my PC, and the drive had a different error: Warning waiting to retry. This time i unplugged and plugged back in the drive, and it was okay again. So i went to start updating my Steam games, but 10 minutes later, the same issue. Unplugged again, but again after 10 minutes...

So what the hell is the matter with this drive? How do i fix this annoying issue? I don't want to spend more money on bigger drive.

In Exchange 2010, how reliable is the "LastLogonTime" in determining mailbox usage?

Group,

I have around 300 mailboxes that report nothing for the LastLogonTime.  Can I safely conclude from that the users aren't utilizing the mailboxes?  If so, I'd like to remove them.  No sense having unused mailboxes floating around.

Thank you.

In Exchange 2010, shared mailboxes (ie those attached to user's primary mailboxes such as help desk mailboxes, etc) have their primary AD account disabled as no-one logs directly onto the mailbox.  I would check if those mailboxes are in fact shared mailboxes and not rely entirely on the last logon time of the AD account associated with the mailbox itself.

How can a project manager create a project inside PWA without using project professional

Hi,

I want to know what is the exact use of the proposal project and basic project option available while creating a project?

I want to know is there any way to create project within PWA site by not using the project professional........

Is there any way to maintain the product(project server) inside project server PWA site alone.....

When exactly the use of project professional is coming into picture and what are the  added advantage s of the client usage

Please tell me in brief  ASAP..........

The purpose of the Proposal feature in Project Server 2010 is to allow users to propose a project and then run the Proposal through a formal workflow process where the proposed project is either approved or rejected.  When the a user creates a new Proposal, the system actually creates an enterprise project which can be opened and edited in either the Project Center page in PWA or in Microsoft Project Professional 2010.

Yes, it is entirely possible to create and manage a project using only the PWA interface WITHOUT using Microsoft Project 2010 at all.  However, I will warn you in advance that the editing capabilities in the PWA interface are VERY limited.  For example, you cannot baseline a project using the PWA interface, you cannot specify dependencies other than Start-to-Finish, you cannot set Constraints and Deadline dates, and you can only assign resources to tasks using a Units value of 100%.  These limitations realistically mean that users can only plan and manage lightweight (small) projects using the PWA interface.  To manage any other type of project, you really need to use Microsoft Project Professional 2010.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

Thanks a lot that was helpful ,but what is the difference between basic project and proposal project option available when one tries to create a project from project server (PWA SITE).

Can we create a project within PWA site which does not have any workflow attached to it(i.e without any approval it should be a enterprise project).....

Can i do this by creating a custom template like propsal.... option but without workflow attached to it?

Hi there,

See the link below to see the limitations of web editing compared to using Project Professional 2010:

http://www.microsoft.com/project/en-us/web-based-project-management-comparison.aspx

Yes you can create an enterprise project from PWA that is not associated with a workflow. I'm not sure of the EPT's you have but if it is all out of the box then use the default "Basic Project Plan" EPT or create new EPTs and dont associate a workflow

Thanks

A basic project is a blank Microsoft Project 2010 project with no workflow associated with it.  A proposal project is a blank Microsoft Project 2010 project with an approval workflow process associated with it.

Yes, you can create a project without a workflow by selecting either the basic project or by creating a new project in Microsoft Project 2010 and saving it in Project Server.

If you want to create projects from a template, you will need to create the template in Microsoft Project 2010 and save it as a template in the Project Server database.

Hope this helps.

Bug report: Blob DownloadToStream causes 100% memory consumption in Storage Emulator

I have a bug to report.

When you try to download a blob URL that was present but is now deleted using the DownloadToStream method in the Azure Compute&Storage Emulators, the emulator will just consume all available memory and die instead of reporting an error.

Happens to me reproducibly (after including system restart) with VS2010 Ultimate + the newest RTM Azure tooling + SQL Express 2008.

I hope this is the right place to post this - couldn't find Azure on MS Connect.

Balint

Controlling the AD group member reference from BHOLD through FIM

Hello,

I have set-up a lab with FIM2010 R2, all BHOLD components and some MA's to control the users, OUs, permissions etc. in BHOLD.

The users and organisation data is coming from HR through FIM to BHOLD. AD groups are coming from AD to BHOLD. Permissions are mapped to roles in BHOLD and the users that have applied permissions are presented in the tblReference BHOLD table which I import to FIM.

The problem is the member reference that I get from BHOLD and how this is mapped to MV and then exported to AD DS.

I can see that the member attribute on the group MV object are refering to MV objects so that is good. The problem there is no pending export although the member MV group attribute is indeed mapped to the AD CS member attibute. Could it be that the MV member reference is not in the correct format, it is not actually the DN of the user objects but it just shows the BHOLD id's...

I am abit lost here, so if anyone out there knows how you could use the member attribute from BHOLD properly then I would be extremely happy-fish if you could share your thoughts here....

btw, I have followed Dave's good tutorial to get it all working...well exept this case that is....

Reply:

Wild guess..! Is the member attribute marked as a reference attribute on the BHOLD authorization MA? It need that in order to become a DN reference in your AD CS.

Error 25009 To install the FIM Synchronization Service in FIM 2010 R2

Hi All,

While installing FIM Synchronization Service I got the below error,

Error 25009. The Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service setup wizard cannot configure the specified Database.OLEDB Provider Information:

Can someone throw pointers on how to get rid of this error.

Thanks,

Reply:

Are you using a remote SQL server? In that case you need the SQL Native Client installed on the FIM 2010 server. Also, make sure that the account used for installation has sysadmin permissions on the SQL server used.

Otherwise, I think you need to add some addtional information on your environment.

In SQL Server 2000 there is not logon trigger available, like in SQL Server 2008. So there is no way to archive the same in 2000.

There is no client PC, there is no policy that can be found, it is the servers that complain nothing else. All workstations work, get default GPOs and do not display any errors processing GPO.

Have enabled as per the article but does not apply to Windows 2008, cannot get GPO logging to work on the server at all.

Running the report and you will have it in e-mail in the next little while.

Solution is now here.

Using the following queries.

ldifde -f output.txt -d "cn=policies,cn=system,DC=domain,DC=edu,DC=au" -r "(cn=wireless)"

ldifde -f output1.txt -d "cn=policies,cn=system,DC=domain,DC=edu,DC=au" -r "(cn=IEEE80211)"

we identified policies in active directory that were not present in Group Policy Management. From this point we identifed the policy, which were affected and which can be removed, backed up system state and deleted/updated (using ADSIEDIT) the entries and voila, problem is now fixed.

Hi,

When a project does not have a project site associated with it then can we create issues,deliverable...... linked to that project.

And if yes where will it get stored in database?..... and also again when we want to see the data related to that project where can we see...?

Or is it that if no wokspace then we cannot create deliverable, risk or issue for that project

Before you can create risks, issues, or deliverables associated with an enterprise project, you must publish the project.  During the act of initially publishing the project, the system creates a Project Site for the enterprise project in SharePoint.  When the Project Site is created, all interested parties can collaborate together in the Project Site to manage risks, issues, documents, and deliverables associated with the project.  And the risks, issues, documents, and deliverable information for each project is stored in the Content database in SharePoint.  Hope this helps.

The significant market share of Windows RT

http://meshpress.com/dell-inc-nasdaqdell-urging-microsoft-corporation-nasdaqmsft-to-call-windows-rt-something-else-clwr-nok/1224569.html

Full quote:

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) is being repeatedly requesting Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)  to modify the name of Windows RT through its vice-chairman and president of PC business on the grounds that it is not designed to support genuine Windows software.

But, Steve Ballmer of Microsoft Corporation is of the view that we cannot call the new OS with a different name because " Windows" served our company well for so many years that customers are used to relating MSFT with Windows therefore, if it is changed then we are going to lose our significant market share.

------

The significant market share of... Windows RT? Are they kidding? And yes, the name is terrible. But it's nice to see that "New Microsoft" not only ignores customers, developers, admins and partners, but even the most important OEMs now too! Nice going.

There's more:
---------
Additionally, Ballmer clarified that MSFT will provide necessary information about the differences between two platforms which are known as Windows 8 and Windows RT in few days. But, the software giant clearly refused to entertain the featured request made by DELL's top management.
---------

LOL, what? Win8 is since almost two months on the market, and they will provide necessary information in a few days?

More: http://bgr.com/2012/12/17/windows-rt-dell-warning-255955/

Ballmer responded by saying that the Windows brand was too important of a franchise to not be used in the company's tablet operating system. The executive's decision has since been heavily criticized and even forced Microsoft to extend its Surface RT return policies after consumers realized the device could not run their favorite Windows applications.

Utter insanity. How many more clues do they need to realize their failures with Windows 8? How is this stubbornness explainable?

New Lync 2010 Design

Currently i am working to design Lync 2010 with 1 FE Enterprise with 1 Edge 1 SQL server.

I was reading a lot and a lot to complete the design and I stuck on the IP configuration.

What I need you guys to help me with is the IP and NIC configuration.

We installed FE with 1 NIC connected to our Internal LAN,

1 DMZ with 4 NIC. 3 Connected to our DMZ for AV,WEBCONF and SIP. 1 NIC connected to our Internal LAN.

SQL with 1 NIC coneccted to our Internal LAN.

TMG

We have ISA 2006 used as proxy mode connected to out Internal LAN but not used as Firewall because we have different firewall appliance (Doesn't support reverse proxy so we need another one in the DMZ used as RP).

We have 3 external DNS entries AV.contoso.com - SIP.Contoso.com - Webconf.Contoso.com also we have created the sip tls external DNS entry

one question:

1. how many NIC and IPs i need to use for the TMG (in DMZ) and where it should connect to?

DMZ Network 192.168.1.x

Internal Network 10.1.100.x

Regards,

Al Nahash

Reply:

Hi,

You should need two NIC cards on TMG , one for DMZ and other for internal LAN. Also , you don't need three NIC cards on edge server , you can configure all three external IP addresses on a single DMZ NIC card.

Where is the best place to provide UI Feedback?

Is there anywhere that I can post feedback for Microsoft as they occur to me when using Windows 8?

So for example feedback 1 would be that when it comes to moving tiles around on the screen it is confusing that you hold down on the tile and then have to move up or down first to get it moving before you can go left and right. That does not seem very  intuitive if you want to move it left or right.

Security for Public and Privately defined attribute values

Hi,

My requirement is I have an attribute Classification which can have a host of values e.g. top 10, top 20 etc...These classifications can be created by various users and they can chose whether the classification value they create would be public or private. If public all users should see it, if not only the user who created it would be able to see it.

I had earlier worked with Dimension security where I have worked with the exists function coupled with the username function and a factless fact measure group.

However in this case, I want to use a more refined approach, so that when a user choses to make a classification public, I do not end up inserting rows for all users along with the classification in the factless fact table. I am not sure if I can insert "Everyone" (the windows group which makes something accessible to all) and then the classification id for all publicly available classificatons.

Does such an approach exists?

Reply:

Would something like this work (not sure of the syntax)? I will check, meanwhile please do let me know if you have better or any other ideas

In the allowed set of im Classification (with Role), an MDX statement like

Union(DimName.Classification.properties("Publicflag").value="Y", Exists(DimName.Classification.members,StrToMember("[Users].[UserName]["+ username() + "]"),"FactlessFactMappingTable")

------------------------------------
Reply:

Hi all,

Have got it working. Just in case you may find it helpful, I used the below expression in Dimension Security

Union(Filter([Classification].[Classification Name].members,
       [Classification].[Classification Name].Properties(

"Public Access" )="1") ,
    Exists([Classification].[Classification Name].members,strToMember("[Username].[User

Name].&[" + username + "]"),
    "User Classification Bridge"))

Please note that due to a bug, the GUI in SSMS would always throw an error if you do a check, saying it can't find the Username dimension but the expression actually works. Found that this bug occurs when another dimension is referenced when specifying the security for a dimension.
