I can only ping my wireless router if I have a Static IP Address
Is there a reason that I am able to connect to a wireless router, but I am not able to ping the wireless router by its IP address or access via http or https. If I login to the DC or File server I am able to ping the IP and access via http or https. Also, if I assign a static ip to my laptop I can ping and acccess via http or https.
Thanks...B

Is DHCP working on your network? as servers would normally have a static IP.
if you do a ipconfig without the static IP and you get a 169.x.x.x address DHCP is not working for the PC.

It's great you share these kind of workflows. I've always hoped for something like the FIM ScriptBox but then for workflows... After all, don't we all need the same workflows?
* unique value
* Powershell execution
* code execution like yours to lower the amount of custom workflows
* ....
I know we all like to do things "our" way, with our own coding approach, but it would be awsome if some store could be maintained.

Hi, Thomas
Thank you. I fixed the link.
I'm planning to publish more and more workflows to this library and would of course like to have co-coders. I agree that I would be nice to have one go-to place for all your workflow needs - but my best bet right now is this CodePlex. I already have a few more workflows that is gonna go into the project.

Easy Print doesn't show up
Reposting here since no response in the network forum.
Easy print not showing up between 2 Win 7 systems. I've read tons of tech notes and posts and double checked requirements but I cannot get printers to redirect with Easy print. This is in prep for workers at home using RDP to their office systems. I have here two systems to test.
Both Win7 Pro SP1, up to date. Each has a couple of Brother printers set up that all use different drivers, so they don't just redirect by using the actual driver.
I have access to a cloud server that I can RDP into from either of these W7 systems and all printers show up and show as using Easy print as the driver.
When I try to RDP from one W7 station to the other the printers don't redirect and event log shows it didn't have a driver for these.
Local Policy settings for RDP printer redirection are default, no set, meaning "don't redirect" is not enabled. Obviously I have things set in the RDP client itself or I wouldn't see my printers redirected when I go to the cloud.
MS docs say a W7SP1 system already has .NET3.5 and RDP 6.1, and I've checked RDP. And they say W7 to W7 meets all requirements (blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/09/28/using-remote-desktop-easy-print-in-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx)
So what the heck else does it want?
Oh, and it works fine going from either of these W7 systems as client to a W8 system as host.

Helath Service Bouncing - Override not working???
Hi, I am having an issue on a number of agents which was first discovered when troubleshooting possible causes to 'Health Service Heartbeat Failures'. On reading the blogs I think its nailed down to the agents exceeding thresholds for Health Service Private Bytes and I have tried to implement overrides based on reading Kevin Homans blog here http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2009/12/21/the-new-and-improved-guide-on-healthservice-restarts-aka-agents-bouncing-their-own-healthservice.aspx albeit I think this predates the current version of the Core Monitoring Mgmnt pack I'm using (6.1.7695.0 on SCOM 2007 R2) As per guide I enabled alerting for the 4 individual Health Service Memory Utilization Monitors and diabled the Auto recovery so I could spot and investigate the issues.
The default value of the monitor is 300MB (314572800) and the override value I've set to is 600MB (629145600), however the affected agents are still alerting on teh default value NOT the higher override value. I have implemented the override by creating a custom group (saved in custom OpmMgr Override pack) and made the member objects the entity type 'Health Service' for the specific affected machines.
I dont know why the override is not working as I think it is applied to the correct entity/object type - (have also just tried targeting the windows computer object of the affected machines like many of my other overrides but no joy either.)?? I have tried to check by going in to health explorer on one of the agents I think should have the override applied and when I go to override properties for the Private bytes monitor I can see that the threshold values read Deault - 314572800, Override - 314572800, EFFECTIVE - 629145600, which I read to mean that it IS picking up the higher override value 129145600??
Any help on how to apply this override would be greatly appreciated as its having a significant impact with volume of alerts/state changes!! Just as an aside I think the reason the affected machines are breaching is due to the updated Print Server MP that I applied - since then the affected machines are all print servers which happen to host a very large number of print queues each (hundreds) and so I can see the agent having a lot of work monitoring those queues to the granular level that the Print Server MP offers as default.
Reply:
Think I've found that the override IS infact working - its just that the value of the breached thresholds were a digit larger than what I was first reading (which surprised me), ie the value for private bytes is eg 3583041536 which is 3.5 GBish, not 358ish MB as first glances thought. So some of the machines have stopped alerting as they are using the override value and only a few are still alwerting as they are WAY over threshold. Which is another issue I'll have to look into - still think Print MP is the cause but 3.5GB private bytes seems massive - all I can see is that the frequency of the alerts seems to have come down from every 20 mins to every 2 hours so much be a discovery or something running on that schedule that might need tuning.
Dont suppose anyone has come across any gottchas on the later Print Server MP ver 6.0.7004.0 - I only installed it as I though it had bug fixes to reduce noise but looks like the granular monitoring esp on Print servers managing hundreds on print queue might be hammering the agent itself.
Cheers

Logon script working but mapped drives not showing in My Computer
Windows Server 2003 R2/Windows 7 Client
We use GPO's and every user has a vbs logon to map drives. However although the scripts work in XP they don't show any mapped drives in Win7. Below is a sample script
Option Explicit
Dim oWS, objNetwork
Set oWS = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Set objNetwork = CreateObject("Wscript.Network")
' Map Drives
' ----------
' Map IT General Drive - I
' ------------------------
On Error Resume Next
if objNetwork.ComputerName = "REL2519" then
MsgBox "I Drive"
End if
objNetwork.MapNetworkDrive "I:", "\\company.org.uk\company\IT\IT General"
if objNetwork.ComputerName = "REL2519" then
MsgBox "I Drive Mapped"
End if
If (Err.Number <> 0) Then
On Error GoTo 0
objNetwork.RemoveNetworkDrive "I:", True, True
if objNetwork.ComputerName = "REL2519" then
MsgBox "I Drive Removed"
End if
objNetwork.MapNetworkDrive "I:", "\\company.org.uk\company \IT\IT General"
if objNetwork.ComputerName = "REL2519" then
MsgBox "I Drive Re-mapped"
End if
End If
Wscript.quit
If I run this from the desktop then the script works fine. Has anything changed in Windows 7?
PS the lines with Msgbox are for testing purposes.
Thanks

I was having trouble with Novell mapped drives and scripts. I accidentally found out that by turning off UAC they worked perfectly. Maybe give it a try. I'm sure it's not the magic bullet for all things.
Turn it off, re-start and then try your scripts. It's in the action center. If it works at least you know that your scripts are working and your mapping is working. And if it doesn't, it only cost you a little time.

If I remember correctly, logon scripts run at an administrative level.
Until you elevate an action, you are running at a user level token.
They cannot see each others drives.
To test this, open a command prompt and type: net use
Do you see any network drives listed?
Next, open a command prompt "as administrator" (right click and select "run as administrator").

Sorry to dig up this thread but in my experience if you make the mapping permanent with objNetwork.MapNetworkDrive drive, share, True then it works without the registry fix mentioned.
I noticed this after I changed my scripted mappings from permanent to non-permanent and my Windows 7 users who are local administrators started having problems. Standard users on Windows 7 don't experience this issue and XP is unaffected.
Hope this helps someone.

SCCM 2012 SP1 Report Builder Not Available
I had Report Builder working on SCCM 2012 before installing the SP1 Beta. Since installing SP1 I can't launch the report edit mode from the SCCM console, on the SCCM server or on a remote console. I've checked the registry key change and tried the Run As Administrator, no luck.
The symptoms are exactly like what we saw when first trying to get Report Builder to launch from the console before the reg hack and run as were set.
If it matters I'm running SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 without CU on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, with .NET 3.5.1 and 4.0 installed.
I finally found the answer after a lot of trial and failure. The answer is to remove the SRS point, and then add it again. Start the console with Run As Admin and editing works again.
Hope this helps someone else. I'll bug it on Connect too.

Removing and reinstalling the Reporting Services point on SCCM 2012 SP1 box worked, too. Once the role was reinstalled, I had to run the console as administrator, choose to edit a report, let Report Builder load up completely, close Report Builder, and then I could open the console on my local workstation as my standard user, choose to edit a report, and Report Builder would actually install locally for me, too.
Thanks for the help!

Subscrption Reports store to database
I have heard it is possible to set subscription reports to run and be stored directly into a database table to later be loaded by an ASP.NET ReportViewer. If anyone knows how this is possible, I would appreciate any help.
That's the question, now here's the reasoning:
We are generating an ASP.NET application that hosts several SSRS reports on a highly secure server. We have a majority of the structure working well, but are looking for a way support subscription reports that doesn't require writing to and reading from Windows folders or directly emailing data as neither are options.
If you have any idea how we might support that task in other ways, I would very much appreciate that help, also.
Outlook configured on Windows 8 required elevation in order to access private key

Hyper-V time Sync problem
Greetings everyone.
Yesterday we had a time problem over one of our production servers, 2008R2, I had not too much to investigate why it was caused, cause it was urgent to solve it, but maybe anyone here could lend me a hand in figuring why it was caused and avoid it happening again.
Any further investigation overt this problematic machine won't be possible, it was a virtual one which, for other reason, needed to be deleted, the physical is working again.
I'll try to explain the problem:
Yesterday, at 4PM, the machine suddenly changed his hour to 1AM of today (+9 hours), event viewer just showed and information message like "System time and date has been changed" by system service. This server was w32tm synced to es.pool.ntp.org, forzing the resync just let the correct time for about 20 secs, then it would go wrong again.
Forzing it with cmd time date, or control panel, same result.
So I checked hyper-V time sync from his physical machine, which we manually deactivated when we NTPed it, somehow it was activated, as soon as I deactivated it, time was again synced correctly with NTP.The time in the physical machine was correct all the time.
So the questions I would like to get solved would be:
-Why would hyper-v time sync mess up the virtual machines, even if hyper-V host time is correct? is there any way to fix this if its a known bug?
-Why would hyper-V time sync reactivate itself alone? any way to ensure this won't happen again?
All our enviroment is running under Hyper-V, if this has happened in this machine I would need a way to diagnose/fix it so it won't happen in anymore, sorry for not being able to give you more data about the problem we have, but I could add anything you need if its not "problematic machine related".
Regards.
Carlos.

Timezones on host and in 5/6 VM were ok, just failed this one.
The machine wans't rebooted in +2 weeks, why would it suddenly resync with hyper-V and even not getting host time but a wrong one?
------------------------------------
Reply:
Hyper-V synchronizes the time between the hypervisor and VM during the BIOS boot process (I beleive all hypervisors behave this way) and then depends on Active Directory to properly correct the time.
Time sync between the VM and the hypervisor can be disabled (on a VM by VM basis) and then the time os only sync'ed on boot of the VM. Otherwise it is sync'ed with the hypervisor over and over again.
If the client is using RDP and the VM is Terminal Services there is time that happens there too. And it can happen within the session to attempt to correct to the time of the end users device within the session (so the time 'looks right' to the user). This does not affect the machine time though.
This can all be driven through Active Directory computer and user policies.
Issues to be aware of:

Thanks for the Links Brian, I kinda get an idea how Hyper-V time works.
The weird thing, going agains this link was that Hyper-V host time was correct, and it made only crazy one.
As can be red:
"Question #4 – What about if I am using a different time synchronization source (e.g. domain time or a remote time server)?"
I do not totally agree, I could't solve my drift until I disabled Time sync from Hyper-V, and my VM was synced to DC and NTP servers, yet Hyper-V overrided it, because, as I w32tm resynced or manual set cmd->time, It would only last for 1-30 secs, then the incorrect time was set until Hyper-V time sync was deactivated.
The VM machine nor the host hasn't been stopped/rebooted/paused in more than 2 weeks, and suddenly at 4PM the time decided to drift.
The timezones were the same, and correct in all machines, +1GMT, even when the time was wrong the timezone was still correct.
------------------------------------
Reply:
Yes, the behavior you saw was inline with what is expected.
The sync with Hyper-V will keep correcting the VM with the host. Now, there was a comment in Ben's blog about a drift and how time sync is not maintained if the seperation is too great.
If you use an external sync source then you should disable the host sync.
The curious question that I would have is this: Did the VM or the host have any process happening at this time that caused the CPU utilization to spike?

No Brian, the computer wasn't stressed at all at that time, around 30-40% CPU usage.
Still this info is enough, before this post I thought hyper-V sync time and NTP could live together with no problems, now I see that it's better to just choose 1 of them.

Now what i have done, i have just disabled the time sync option from VM and started to sync it from time.windows.com over the internet and also decrease the frequency of time to sync with ntp server.
seems things are working but still kept in under observation. will update you after one week.

Hi There,
First, you have to confirm that EWS, Autodiscover and OAB (Default Web Site) really exist, on your IIS structure (Default Web Site). I show why:
This is happens because EWS (Default Web Site) web directory doesn´t exist on IIS structure (or have a problem). For this issue, you have to do the simple thing on ESM:
Open Exchange Manage Console -> Server Configuration -> Client Access -> On the Action Pane
Select Reset Virtual Directory - Browse..
Select the Virtual Directory You want to reapply Ex:
Autodiscover (Default Web Site)
EWS (Default Web Site) (Select this)
OAB (Default Web Site)
Select OK and after that You need to run:
iisreset /noforce
If /noforce attibute wont work. use the simple command iisreset.

Unable to deserialize the existing configuration file when attempting to save changes to workerrole configuration
I open the azure console, I go to my deployed worker role application, I select the "configure" "tab", I make a change and click save.
At which point I get an error: Unable to deserialize the existing configuration file.
Very weird. It just suddenly started happening. What does work is if I download the file, make the change and then re-upload. It's a pain to have to do this and this error shouldn't be happening...

One thing that is interesting, when I download the file and open it with a mac it is gibberish, suggesting that the character set that the file is in is wrong. This may be the reason why it cannot be deserialized. Maybe the console only supports particular character encodings.
What encoding do you suggest I use to save the file in to upload? I'm using linux.

I think that the problem is with an update with the portal, I checked my config files and all it's ok.
We hope Microsoft'll fix it asap.

Set environment variable from Azure Role to use in PHP
I'm using this code:
Environment.SetEnvironmentVariable("ConnectionString", connString, EnvironmentVariableTarget.[User|Process|Machine]);
on OnRoleEnvironmentChanged event of Azure RoleEntryPoint class to set a connection string on an Environment Var and use it in PHP but it doesn't work.
Using User or Process as target it simply doesn't work, using Machine the role cannot execute the instruction (maybe because of user restrictions)
How can I set variable from Azure Roles in .NET to consume in PHP?

Hi,
You can try to add Environment Variable via Powershell script at the machine level:

This solution set the variable on the startup task but It doesn't work for me because I need to set the value on Machine target when the event OnRoleEnvironmentChanged is invoked.
Should it works instead?

Terminal Server 2008 Office 2007 will not install
Hi All
A printer engineer uninstalled Outlook 2007 from our terminal server without a by your leave, then disappeared, users complained that Outlook was not working as it was not intalled on the TS anymore, so I uninstalled Office 2007 as required then tried to reinstall Office again, however on changing to install mode Change user /install and clicking on the exe file the office installation screen shows for a few seconds and then disappears, I have run the Microsoft Office unstall program from the web the check that Office did indeed uninstall correctly but I still get the same results, I have noticed that my installation files (located on the TS Server do not have a TermSRVR.mst file available, however as it was working fine before I can't see what is the issue.
Any help would be much appreciated
Ray

Do you havevolume license version of Office 2007? You need to use a volume license version of Office 2007 for Remote Desktop Services/Terminal Services.

Hi Bob sorry for the delay, I do have a Volume License and still get the issues.
When the engineer uninstalled Outlook on the TS Server, I had to uninstall Office and then try to reinstall it, however the issues as above arose, I have since found out that Office 2007 does not use TermSRVR.mst files as in thie article below, which I have followed: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/13393-Terminal-Server-and-Office-2007 the error i have is

=========================================================================
This seems to be a language issue as indicated by the reference "Return code: 30061. Exception caught: OutOfBoundsIndex",or it may be that the uninstallation of Outlook on its own and the consequential uninstalltion of Office as a whole has left some remenants of files still in the registry, I have used the microsoft Uninstall Fix it Site to try and clean up the uninstalled files however this has failed to work, I am at a loss at this stage so any help is much appreciated.
Of course it could be that I am trying to do this remotely which I realise is a No No I will not be able to get on site untill Friday AM to test

It's not possible disable a parameter totally in SSRS but you can use cascading and pass some default value

Customization on File Menu Page
Is it possible to customize the File Menu Page options in any of the products in Office 2013 (particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
For Eg. If I wanted to added my own options for sharing the document with team. Can i add/configure my own options under "File">"Share">"Send by XYZ", or "Post to Facebook", or "Share on twitter"??
