Installed Hyper-V - 2 NICs - One says "Unidentified Network"

Hello,

I have a DC and Server1, both of which are Windows 2008 R2 SP1.  Server1 has two NICs, let's call them NIC1 and NIC2.  Both NICs are assigned static IPs and are on the same subnet, pointing to the same default gateway.

I successfully joined Server1 to my domain, mydomain.domain.  I installed Hyper-V and chose NIC2 as the physical NIC to use.  Hyper-V then made NIC2 a virtual switch and a new adapter showed up as a virtual NIC  All this is normal.

The network on NIC1 shows as mydomain.domain.  However, the network on NIC2 shows as Unidentified Network.  I have been scouring the Internet for solutions but nothing seems to work.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to why my NIC2 is saying: Unidentified Network while NIC1 is not?

Thanks!

Reply:

If I understand correctly, what you did was create a virtual machine network using NIC2 (correct?). In doing this, you've unbound the IP (protocol) from the adapter and obviously the IP address as well. What you are seeing would be the expected view in the adapter status as the host server does not communicate through that NIC anymore. If you were to create a VM, assign it a static IP, and have it use that virtual switch, the VM would then show "mydomain.domain" in it's status.

You'll need to provide more information on what your trying to do as a start i would read the Forum guide http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-AU/exchangesvrdevelopment/thread/77c07b69-eea6-43ab-9225-4b384cecfc9d then try to explain in detail what your problem is, what version of Exchange,What API, what code your using and what your trying to achieve.

A few bugs now begin to get annoying

Good evening, I am helping a lady friend of mine test as well as evaluate her Windows 8 Enterprise moreover we came to notice that Windows 8, during the short recent period of our evaluation of it, has quite a number of problems, which even another friend of mine tells me (of which he purchased an upgrade for his new laptop) has found similarities to.

We all came to notice the following:

    • Windows 8 keeps restarting, without displaying or showing BSOD screens or Black Screen errors whenever it is idle, often for no reason. It does at least two times a day.
    • Windows 8's time is often not properly synchronised, with numerous time zones we tested often not displaying their correct times.
    • Windows 8 is not really working with the NVIDIA Driver, in which it occasionally crashes the driver
    • Windows 8's task manager sometimes pauses its scanning without explanation, in which it stops updating its processes
    • Windows 8 is often problematic in the way it updates, such as the computer having a message during a restart saying that the updates will be finished with another restart in two days from now (why is that so?)
    • Windows 8 has a number of issues in Internet Explorer 10 related to its problems displaying websites, which sometimes even with full plugins sites such as BBC UK do not completely open, or in other cases, even when the Internet seems to work, shows its Internet Connection error with the option to fix it, when it should be working.
    • Windows Updates often interrupts in the middle of updating
    • The desktop, along with all its icons, often blink or flash often as if being infinitely refreshed, for no reason; especially doing so whenever we test IE10's performance by saving twenty tabs at once.
    • Internet Explorer 10 has a major memory consuming problem: it consumes a lot more memory as you have higher computer memory (we tested this effect on two other computers as well). Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7 also did the same.
    • Finally is an error both Windows 8 as well as Windows 7 (even service packed) has: svchost.exe constantly stretches in memory consuming size, so does the process "TrustedInstaller.exe"

I guess this is sufficient, moreover I hope this seemingly gobsmacking amount of bug reports will contribute to Microsoft's efforts at fixing it!

Folder Redirection and Black Screen at Logoff

Hi,

We have 4 new HP blade Servers running Windows 2008 R2 that are being used for our RDS Farm. We are using Roaming Profiles together with Desktop and My Documents Folder Redirection (all stored on a VMware virtual Windows 2008 R2 File Server, in two separate shares). The Local cached profiles are deleted at logoff.

I first noticed an issue when the users were assigned new profile folders at logon (i.e. username.domainname.001, ....002,.....003). There were also some entries in the Event Log:

Windows cannot delete the profile directory C:\Users\username.local.004. This error may be caused by files in this directory being used by another program.

DETAIL - The directory is not empty.

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

I came across some similar postings and I used Process Monitor and Process Explorer to try and pinpoint what app could be preventing the locally cached profile from being deleted and holding onto those registry files. The only culprit was explorer.exe. The folders left behind would vary and sometimes they would contain files (e.g. index.dat, thumbcache) and sometimes they would be empty. The type of folders would be:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

I uninstalled the AV client and also ran msconfig to disable all non Microsoft Services – this didn't make any difference.  I disabled the deletion of cache profiles and this only solved the first error, not the registry issue. This also resulted in a black screen appearing for approx 5mins when the users logged off.

I next tried disabling the folder redirection policy and this fixed the problem - no more registry key errors or black screen at logoff. I did come across another posting where someone had an issue with the Desktop Redirection. I tried enabling the redirection of My Documents but removing Desktop Redirection. This seems to be working now. Has anyone come across this issue or might help with an explanation?

Hi,

In some circumstances, something (a sharing violation error, it seems) prevents some "index.dat" files from being deleted at logoff, hence the user's directory is not removed.
The next time the user logs on, a new directory is created on the TS, typically namedC:Documents And Settingsusername.domain. This one too does not get deleted at logoff, so the next logon will create an additional directory, namedC:Documents And Settingsusername.000. And so on, username.001,username.002, ad libitum.

This issue is usually caused by some 3rd application.Recreating the profile (delete it then logon) will resolve this issue.

I had the same issue and it came down to VIDEO DRIVERS! The video driver that comes with vmware tools is NOT going to work with WIndows 2008 R2 so make sure you go download the latest version of Vmware Tools and only load the video driver (other issues involved with the 5.1 version of tools with terminal servers). VMware SVGA 3D is the one you want as the Standard Graphics Adapter is nothing but a problem! Good Luck sborner@gmail.com if you have questions!

Recent Update to Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 7-v2 stopped Mail flow in and out

I just installed the Exchange SP1 Rollup 7-v2 and when the server came back on line I am getting a 4.3.2 Service Unavailable internally and externally (within the domain and using the public IP) when I attempt to telnet into the mail server to send a test email.  I have uninstalled the update at this point but am still unable to send or receive emails through this mail server.

The server was running flawlessly just prior to the update, and the Send and Recieve Connectors are still in place and identical to prior to the update install.

I can connect to exchange from Outlook, Outlook Web Access and from Exchange ActiveSync.  But no email traffic is going in or out of the server.

Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions?

Lesson Learned, watch the free space on the OS partition closely.  With some help I discovered that I started to run dangerously low on available space and am in the process of extending the OS partition to prevent this from happening again in the future.

I've been informed that this 421 4.3.2 can be caused by "backpressure" in Exchange and is a safety to keep the service from crashing all together.  Posting the solution here so if anyone else has a similar problem they will have a reference.

Thanks Cliff.

Hi,

This question is a bit unrelated to the problem you had, but I was just wondering if you removed Rollup 7-v1 before installing Rollup 7-v2, or was the server happy to install v2 over the top of v1?

Thnaks,
Graeme.

I don't know how Braden Pitman proceeded but according to the Exchange Team blog you do not need to uninstall the previous version:

Hi Ahmed,

As far as I know, Exchange integration with Project Server works with ONLY based windows authentication.

Agreed with Hrishi,

Please see below article:

Exchange Synchronization to Project Server will not work on a Project Server 2010 deployment configured to use Claims Authentication. Forms-based authentication in Project Server 2010 uses the claims authentication infrastructure and requires that a claims mode Web application be set up in the SharePoint Central Administration Web site.

Hi Amit,

I just found this discussion and see that it is very recent.

It just so happens that we are doing the same thing as the thread initiator and have the same error. Our PWA site is currently shared with other sites on one Web Application in SharePoint - which is set up to be forms based authentication. The reason we wanted to do that was because our long term plan is to share the PWA site with our customers (we sell engineering services and project management), and because we have off site employees at other facilities as well. We did not want to be forced to set up an active directory account for every customer just to give them access to PWA. It sounds as if you are saying the FBA will not work if we do exchange sync and we will have to give everyone AD accounts. Is that a true statement?

Thanks for your support,

Mike Ernst

Mike,

Point is exchange sync only works with Active Directory users.

If I understand correctly you have your own AD and Exchange. Your customers are using their own exchange server

You can't create user account in your AD just to provide access to PWA which makes sense.

When we configure exchange server sync with Project, exchange server try to find certain attributes when project is publish so , data received by exchange can be updated to respective resource data in PWA.

When we use FBA, clearly there is a disconnect.  FBA users do not have same attributes like AD. Exchange server won't be able to understand

You can find mode info about the fields here

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff686785.aspx

I hope this helps

Hrishi,

Yes we have our own Domain with AD and our own Exchange. We sell engineering design services. The tasks on the projects are assigned to our design team, and they all have an AD account. So we want to have tasks sync with the employees' Outlook on their local PC. But we would like to be able to give the customers access to the site so they can see the progress on their projects. Thus we wanted to have a system that would recognize both Windows authentication for the project resources (our employees) and then FBA for the customers. Only those with AD accounts will get assigned tasks and be project resources, so they are the only ones that would need the sync operation.

How would you suggest we approach this problem?

Mike

Mike,

I am bit confused here, you said

"Only those with AD accounts will get assigned tasks and be project resources, so they are the only ones that would need the sync operation"

Which means FBA users don't need exchange sync, only AD accounts need to be setup for exchange sync, is that correct?

Correct me if my I have misunderstood your question. Your question is

If you have both AD and FBA users configured in PWA will exchange sync work for AD accounts or not?

Hrishi,

Well I thought based on your previous email that if I have the PWA setup for claims based authentication then the exchange sync will not work. And I believe there is no other way to have both Windows Authentication and FBA on the same site other than Claims based, is that correct?

So, I believe the only way I can get the exchange sync to work is on a Windows Authorization only site (Windows based). Also correct?

So if I have a Windows Authentication only site, then I can run exchange syns and have taks assigned in project server "pushed" out to the reources Outlook via exchange, correct? But then if I want to allow someone who is not an employee and has no AD account to be able to get into the PWA site, how would I do that?

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

Theoretically yes exchange sync only works with Windows Authentication not with claims based authentication , but  I think If you select claims authentication type as windows Authentication - NTLM and Form Based authentication you may able to achieve. I may need to test it though.

Did you select both option while setting up your web application?

Dear Mike,

I have the same scenario, and i tried to make both of them to work together (Calims & exchange).

In my case i tried to add only windows users to my PWA, but it fails and give the error posted above.

I am disapointed to say that no solution for this till now, i will feedback to you if i have reached another solution.

Dears,

I am have an idea,

Can we use event handler feature to override the behavior of Exchange Synch event?

by catch only windows account on PWA & translate them into normal log-in format (Domain\username), then fire exchange synch for them.

Thanks & Regards

Good idea, could be worth to try, But here is what I  think . If something can be configured using event handler why Microsoft will restrict this at first place?

Looks like after long discussion ,my first response to this thread will remain unchanged "Exchange integration with Project Server works with ONLY based windows authentication"   will not work with claims based authentication in this case FBA.

Hrishi and Ahmed,

Actually I am embarassed to say that I think I have figured it out. I just need to extend my PWA Web Application. In fact as I have read up on this I believe that may be part of the intent.

So I think the solution is this: First set up a Web application with Windows Authentitcation. Then add AD users and set up exchange sync. (I have this much working). Now extend the site to another URL and make that application FBA. I am in the process of doing this and I think it is going to work.

Thanks,

Mike

Great.

While doing some research yesterday, initially I thought about this in response to your question

" I want to allow someone who is not an employee and has no AD account to be able to get into the PWA site, how would I do that"

But  came across little note from this article

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee922605.aspx

Note:

A Web application that is already in Windows Classic mode cannot be used.

---------------------------------------------------------------

It would work to allow non-AD and AD users to access PWA site, but exchange sync will not work for FBA users

Dears,

Great news, i have solved it.

The solution is little bit tricky, i have figured out the method that fires the error and modified it.

Simply it was a stored procedure inside Published database, i have modified it to exclude forms users and change the log-in format for the windows users to be "Domain\Username".

The solution as below:

the Stored Procedure Name is:    MSP_ExchangeSync_ReadResourceAccount

i have modified the stored procedure with the below query, by adding "REPLACE PART" beside "Select" statement.

/***********The stored procedure after edit******/

USE [PWA_ProjectServer_Published]
GO

/****** Object:  StoredProcedure [dbo].[MSP_ExchangeSync_ReadResourceAccount]    Script Date: 10/10/2012 13:39:51 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO

SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[MSP_ExchangeSync_ReadResourceAccount]
   @resourceUid UNIQUEIDENTIFIER
AS
  SELECT replace(r.WRES_ACCOUNT,'i:0#.w|','')
  FROM MSP_RESOURCES r
  WHERE r.RES_UID = @resourceUid

GO

Thanks & Regards Ahmed Amin

I appreciate your efforts on these finding and Its good understand how things work in the background

However modifying databases is not supported by Microsoft and often leads to failure of cumulative or service pack installation later in the future. If things are not looking as expected SharePoint configuration wizard can identify this change.

In this scenario it may look like change is only necessary in Published database but it may be connected to several other place in other databases too.

Opening support case with Microsoft and submitting design change request can help to get things done in a supported way.

Repair server 2008 R2 on multi-boot box

Hello all, I am having problems with one of the operating systems on my laptop. I have 5 host operating systems on my laptop. I have had a problem with the bootloader that I thought was only affecting server 2012 and windows 8, but believe it may have caused problems with 2K8R2. I was doing some updates on it yesterday, then on restart, it didn't automatically go into R2, after selecting it and trying to boot from it failed. Since then, it is unbootable after getting the message that windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change may have caused it, then there is the option to startup with repair or boot normally. normal boot fails. I assumed that I would be able to repair it with the install disk, but I could only reinstall the OS. I tried to do the in place upgrade from windows 7, as I found, that this can be used to repair an existing OS, but it didn't have the option to specify which partition I wanted to do it on. Does anyone have any ideas for repairing this in a multi-boot system? I may just end up reinstalling it - though that will involve getting a new key from dreamspark...and having to setuo 2008 R2 = pain in my ass.

Troubleshooting IPAM DNS zone monitoring errors

Hi,

I'm working through the IPAM lab and encountering errors in the DNS zone monitoring section. My environment is a WS2012 Hyper-V host / DC, with an IPAM server and a DHCP server, all on an internal network. The domain name is sandbox.test. In the DNS Zone Monitoring section, both the sandbox.text and _msdcs.sandbox.test forward zones are showing errors.

Basic connectivity between the servers is working just fine. I've run DCDIAG /TEST:DNS /V and it comes up clean, no DNS errors. The DNS server (the host) is showing green in the Server Inventory section. I haven't found anything in the "Understanding and Troubleshooting IPAM" document that describes how to fix this situation, and I'm giving an IPAM demo in a couple of days at a conference so it'd be nice to get it working :).

Thanks!

Hi shorinsean,

Thanks for posting here.

Have we set the firewall exception on both DNS and IPAM server in order to allow RPC/WMI/WS-Management traffics to pass through on both servers . Maybe we can just temporarily disable Windows built-in firewall and retry during the testing:

Hi,

Please try resetting the zone status and then click Tasks and retrieve server data. Let me know if this helps.

Hi,

It looks like the Beta release did not have the ability to reset status, but this is coming.

You might have run into a bug in Beta where the zone is not correctly reset back to OK status after an error is detected. You can check the DNS event log to verify this, but it sounds like this might be what has happened since DCDIAG results are fine.

From the Understand and Troubleshoot Guide:

  • IPAM displays a list of all forward lookup zones that are hosted by managed DNS servers with their overall status based on status from all the servers hosting that zone, as well as duration that the zone has been in that state. The zone status for all servers is shown as OK if the zone is being serviced by each of the Authoritative servers.  The zone status for all servers is shown as Warning, if one or more authoritative servers is not servicing the zone. The zone status for all servers of the zone is shown as Error if none of the authoritative servers are servicing the zone. An authoritative server is considered to be servicing the zone if the zone status of the zone on that server and the server availability state of the server are not in red state.

I hope this helps,

-Greg

Reply:

Hi,

I've been in communication with the product team and there are some known problems with DNS error events causing red status in IPAM and then not being cleared later. This should be fixed in RC, and as I mentioned you can also reset the zone status. In Beta, it is necessary to delete the error events (1004, 1201, 6527 & 503) from the DNS event log, then remove and re-discover the DNS server.

-Greg

------------------------------------
Reply:

We have RTM now, but it looks like the issue is still here... My DNS log is clean for the last year - and I have red status for the zone in IPAM anyway.

So I "Reset zone status", cleaned DNS Events (all of them) in DNS mmc and Retrieved Information from the DNS in IPAM console. After that zones come green.

Greg, what do you mean "delete the error events ... from the DNS event log"? Can we delete events from Event Viewer selectively?

Regards,

-Alex

Reply:

Hi Alex,

AFAIK you cannot delete only certain events from the event log. You must clear the log, which it looks like you did and this worked. It shouldn't be required to clear the log however for status to change from red to green (in the RTM version of IPAM) when a DNS problem is fixed. I'll run some tests myself and see if I can reproduce this.

How to ask a question efficiently in TechNet forum

Thank you for posting in TechNet forum. The online problem solving can be relatively time consuming because it may demand several messages back and force to fully understand the symptom and background, especially at the very beginning. Here are a few suggestions that help you get the best answer to your question as quickly as possible.

When You Ask

1. Selecting a good title which summarizes the specific problem you have. It will be the one of the main driving forces for others to want to actually read your item. Choosing a badly-formatted title will drive people away, thinking that since the title is so badly written, so must be the information and the question within the thread.

2. Provide all the necessary information in your initial post. The following information would be very helpful:

- Symptom description: Detailed description of the problem. If you receive any error messages, please let us know the exact error WORD BY WORD.

- Environment: The system environment, such as your OS/application version, your network topology, and your domain environment, etc.

- Any recent relevant configuration change(s): If the issue started to occur after installing any application/updates or changing the configuration, please let us know.

- Any additional information. Tell what you have done prior to asking your question. This will help us understand that you've done so far.

3. Write in a clear language. Avoiding spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. Don't type IN ALL CAPS, which in most cases is read as shouting and considered rude.

4. Keep with the same thread. Do not refer to a post you made last year, and above all, Please come back. There are hundreds and thousands of posts where we have seen people given great and wonderfully long answers yet no reply from the original poster.

5. Be courteous to reply, even if it's to say. "I've given up" or thanks that worked. (This helps the whole community when you do this, and makes the people who donate time, warm and fuzzies.)

When answered

Give Positive Feedback. Once you've received a correct answer to your question, either from a Microsoft employee, an MVP, or the community in general, pleases replies that the issue or question has been answered. And if possible mark the solution as answered: This step is important, since it lets other people benefit from your posts.

SBS 2003 shutting down because of EULA

We are in the middle of a migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2011 Essentials.  The migration went fine for the DC and we demoted the SBS 2003 server in the hopes of decommissioning it.  Unfortunately, our final migration step was to move a sql server based app from the old SBS 2003 server to the SBS 2011 server and we're running into some issues migrating the app to the new SBS 2011.  We need no more than 2-3 days to complete the app migration.  It's s SQL Server issue we're trying to contend with and we're hoping to complete the migration properly within the next few days.

Is there a way to prevent the unexpected shutdowns until we get the app migrated.  The app is mission-critical and everytime the server goes down, they get kicked out of the legacy app.

Is SCCM the appropriate tool to apply a security template?

Hi there,

I am currently learning SCCM in order to replace our current custom deployment tool.  Our current tool really does a whole lot more than deploy an OS, and one of those things is applying a security template (.inf file).

As I am setting up SCCM 2012 to replace this tool, I am also thinking about what the role our OS deploy tools really are, and wanted to get a consensus on how other people are applying security templates/maintaining security settings.

Thanks!

I have confirmed that the user is a set approver for the Sharepoint workflow in question. My concern is that the individual has stated that this issues is "All of a sudden". he doesn't have any rules configured to route the approvals to a hidden/ forgotten folder and no other users in our org are complaining of this issue.

Blob cache not refreshing

Hi,

We have a MOSS 2007 website hosted on separate staging and production farms. In this site we have a document library holding .css and .js files.

Issue is that when a .css or .js file is updated (e.g. overwritten by a the updated file) on staging and then deployed to production (using a tool based on content deployment APIs), on one of the production WFEs the file that is served remains the old one. While from other production WFEs, new file gets served as expected.

The problematic server starts serving new file only when Blob cache is manually flushed from _layouts/settings.aspx -> "site collection object cache" -> "Force this server to reset its disk based cache".

So I am suspecting that the blob cache is not getting refreshed as it should on this server.

Web.config entry for blob caching on this server is as below:

<BlobCache location="C:\blobCache" path="\.(gif|jpg|png|css|js|swf|flv)$" maxSize="10" enabled="true" max-age="86400" />

Kindly help resolve this issue !!

Thanks and Regards,

kaushik

Reply:
That's why there is a manual flush in Central Admin.  The blob cache only refreshes based on timing.  Deploying new source to the content database doesn't flush the cache.  Its not designed to.  When you deploy new code you need to manually force the server to re-build its cache  or wait for it to pick up the new content as the old content ages out of the cache.  That's the way its designed to work.

Hi Paul,

We are not deploying any code but a library having .css and .js files. For blob caching, I read on msdn that by default after every 5 seconds, cache is checked for any changes in content DB and if change is detected for any file,  then its index entry is invalidated hence paving the way for new file to be served/cached.

But in my case cache invalidation in not happening automatically and I have explicitly flush it from site admin.

My other production WFEs are doing good as they refresh their cache once they detect that the cahced file got changed in content DB.

thanks and regards,

BizTalk 2010 DR Queries

I had browsed through msdn on BizTalk log shipping and DR configuration. Need help in answering queries in me. Before that let me brief the existing infrastructure

Production Configuration

2 BizTalk Server (BizServerN1 and BizServerN2 )

SQL server in cluster(SQL1 and SQL2 --Where Enterprise SSO is installed in both). Master secret Name is updated  with below command ssomanage -updatedb ssocluster.xml(say BizTalkN) and SQL Instance is BizTalkN\BizTalkN). In the passive cluster node, where we joined to existing SSO, restore mastersecret command is executed.

In Biztalk , I can see master secret name as BIZTALKN ,in sso admin and sql server as BizTalkN\BizTalkN.

DR

1 BizTalk server :  during configuration we shoudl select connect to existing and connect to BizTalkN\BizTalkN in SSO

One SQL server(non clustered) : configure Log shipping with three jobs running. Please correct if any mistakes till this point. Now queries..,

1. During SSO installation in DR SQL instance, should i select join to existing in SSO configuration and provide production instace

2. master secret command should to be executed(take the same back up file(SSOXX.BAK) from produciton and execute restore command in DR SQL server)?

3. Should I update Master Name in when Disaster Recovery process, by executing the same command or not mandatory?

4. Any other changes as of SSO restore and back up  is considered?

Reply:

During the SSO install on DR I typically do a create new, but specify a database name SSODB_DR, this will be used only during the configuration.

you then restore the secret from the production servers onto the DR SQL server so that they now match.

Do not update the master name in the DR SQL Server.

Your log shipping will be restoring all the production databases to the DR SQL Server, when you need to switch to DR, the 3rd Job of the log shipping should be disabled, when you switch you typically disable the first to jobs and then run the 3rd jobs, that will take the databases out of restoring mode.

You then need to run the scripts to change the name of the SQL server in the registry and database, you will also need to update the database server that sso is using to now use the database named SSODB instead of the SSODB_DR.

hope this helps

"During the SSO install on DR I typically do a create new, but specify a database name SSODB_DR, this will be used only during the configuration. you then restore the secret from the production servers onto the DR SQL server so that they now match."

If i create new,  then it will create new master secret key. And you said to restore produciton key which is different from this.

That is correct, because when you restore the production SSODB, it will have been encrypted with the master secret key from you existing production server, not the new key that is created during the DR install.

so you must restore the production master secret key to the DR SQL install of SSO.

"You then need to run the scripts to change the name of the SQL server in the registry and database, you will also need to update the database server that sso is using to now use the database named SSODB instead of the SSODB_DR."  Is that We should run these scripts in SQL DR only not in BizTalk. Also where can i get these scripts?

Secondly any specific reason for creating unused SSODB_DR database??

Hi Haik,

To have good knowledge on logshipping please look into this article http://blogs.msdn.com/b/biztalknotes/archive/2012/01/10/biztalk-log-shipping.aspx .

Queries

1 BizTalk server :  during configuration we shoudl select connect to existing and connect to BizTalkN\BizTalkN in SSO.

Yes this is correct. When you move to DR you have to update XMl and run the command.

One SQL server(non clustered) : configure Log shipping with three jobs running. Please correct if any mistakes till this point. Now queries..,

Look into the above blog

1. During SSO installation in DR SQL instance, should i select join to existing in SSO configuration and provide production instace.

Join existing.

2. master secret command should to be executed(take the same back up file(SSOXX.BAK) from produciton and execute restore command in DR SQL server)?

Yes , when you run this it will make it master secret server. (Key need to be same)

3. Should I update Master Name in when Disaster Recovery process, by executing the same command or not mandatory?

You have to update a xml provided in bundle then run the command.

4. Any other changes as of SSO restore and back up  is considered?.

Depend on your application

The scripts are located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\Bins32\Schema\Restore, they will need to be run on the SQL DR and the DR BizTalk.  On The SQL DR you can manually update the database name from SSODB_DR to SSODB, just make sure the service does not try to start until the restored databases are out of restoring mode.

The unused SSODB_DR is created so when you try to setup log shipping the SSODB will already be there and will not restore correctly.

Thanks Chesnut

I feel sorry that i still couldn't get why new DB is required.

"On The SQL DR you can manually update the database name from SSODB_DR to SSODB" Should i change the databas name in any table or actual database name by editing on the database properties. And again you said  we will have problem if we change to SSODB during log shipping configuration. confused again with mixed statements.:(

Thanks. After moving link to DR, mentioned to clean up databases and re create jobs.

DO you have any steps to be done in Production server??(after production is live)like SSO restore again etc

Typically the way I set it up is, create the new SSO with SSODB_DR, then restore the secret from production, I then either use the scripts mentioned above to change the name of the SSODB from SSODB_DR to SSODB or use the ssoconfig with xml (similar to they way you change the name in the cluster) to change the database name.  I then stop the ESSO service and disable it from starting until I need it in a disaster.

Hi Haik,

There is two scenario which you have to look.

1) If after disaster you had rebuilt you entire system. In this case you have to perfrom all bove step. I mean using logshipping move data back to main server. And reun scripts so that biztalk point to older server.

2) Same setup(i mean no component reinstalled) then just run the script and restore ENTSSO. Using this you are going to point Biztalk server group to older SQL server. You have to setup DR set again.

Windows 7 is deployed to 300+ PCs. How can we set VLC as default Video Player?

We have Windows 7 deployed to 300+ PCs. VLC and Windows Media Player are both part of the image.

We are finding that Media Player does not play most video formats. How can we push out either a batch file or Group Policy or something that will set VLC as the default media player for several video formats on existing machines? We would rather not have to re-image them at this time.

Not sure if you posted this in the right spot.  You may want to try to post this in the Server forms and maybe someone knows how to do this via GPO.  If you want to fix your image, I suggest using the copy profile feature in WSIM.  Under the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component, specialize pass.  "The CopyProfile setting enables you to customize a user profile and use it as the default user profile. Windows uses the default user profile as a template to assign a profile to each new user." (Taken from the help file)

That should fix it for the future, but for those machines deployed now, ask in the server forums.

Set a Group Policy to configure the file type association for all video extensions you want VLC to cover e.g. .avi, .mkv, .wmv etc.

The problem with this is that I have tested this, and it does not work. It sets the registry entries, but when you play a file it still uses MSWMP. I think there is more that happens behind the scenes when you click on "Use this for all files of this type" than what you can find in the registry alone.

Hi,

You may paste the change of the registry keys here. It will be helpful of finding out the solution.
