Bug Report: File transfer window from RDP session to local session is still old-style (Vista-type)

Bug Report: File transfer window from RDP session to local session is still old-style (Vista-type)

Hey, hopefully this is the right place to post this:

You might be aware of the transfer window in Windows 7 and how it differs when the following steps are taken:

    • RDP into another computer
    • Within the RDP session copy a (group of) file(s)
    • Paste the clipboard contents into the local session (machine you are connecting from)

This transfer window has no option to show more details and (maybe just me?) looks out of place.

In Windows 8 it's still exactly the same and hasn't been updated to look like a Windows 8 transfer window. In fact it looks more purple and vista-esque :-/

I can attach a screenshot, however, the screenshot shows transfers of. . .questionable. . . material.

Mobile Access in SP 2010

I am working for our client and creating a new intranet in SP2010.The intranet is public facing .

They want the intranet to be accessed via mobile phones and tablets by Filed/Sales Reps to see

Pricelists and other static cotnent stored on SharePoint

We want a rich user exprience and also that is easy which allows them to open an APP rather type a Mobile URL

What can be do in Building it and waht options are there for buying eg:http://www.mobileentree.com/Pages/default.aspx or http://www.shareplusapp.com/

how to exclude particular words of a page from being indexed

Hi all,

I am pushing contents to Fast Search 2010 for Sharepoint through C# code. The problem that i am facing is that whenever i am feeding any .aspx file to FS4SP and do a search for content of that file. It is also displaying CSS terms and javascript terms that were on the page in result page.

Is there any mechanism so that FS4SP won't index such terms?

Hi,

The SMTP server must be configured to allow anonymous access and to allow e-mail messages to be relayed. Additionally, the SMTP server must have Internet access if you want the ability to send messages to external e-mail addresses.

HOWEVER, it's the SMTP server that will be the most likely issue. Normally, SMTP server (for example exchange) will not relay emails to domains other then there own.

How to fix it: In Exchange you can enter the ip-adresses of trusted server. Enter the ip address of the sharepoint server.

This would aloow the sending of emails to external domains.

Cheers,

Amit

The directory service can perform the requested operation only on a leaf object.

FIM is unable to de-provision user accounts having child objects due to Exchange Active Sync (Mobile devices).
(dn: CN=ExchangeActiveSyncDevices,CN=<USER_NAME>,OU=users,DC=xxxx,DC=com)

We get an error "The directory service can perform the requested operation only on a leaf object."

What's the recommended option to handle the deprovisioning of objects in this case?

Right now you need to do the deletes manually. My understanding from other threads here is that there is a fix in the works for this issue.

Windows 8 not what it should be!

Ok guys,

I am a repair service tech and run my own business.

Totally shocked by Windows 8! Not what I expected and be sure that my customers will not have much fun with it.

It actually looks more complicated with the popping up start menu icon in the left corner and totally crappy with the start screen so far.

And of course we all have to change our ways to troubleshoot and repair and find the way to everything. Doable but inconvenient really.

Since XP and Windows 7 everyone is accustomed to the nice start menu. Why the change? What mystical brainiac had the idea to change all that without the chance to keep the old look? At least there should be an option to keep the Windows 7 look.

And 20 gigs on the HDD just with the installation. That's huge man! How do you run it on a 16 gig tablet, eh?!

Good luck with that one!

Reply:

We've all been saying the same thing since the developers preview. Microsoft is hell-bent on deploying it this way and they aren't going to change it. You are not going to get a start menu without having to resort to ClassicShell or other third-party offering. Microsoft doesn't care about desktop users anymore and is focusing on the tablet market. Be grateful they even bothered to include the desktop mode in this release as I'm assuming they'll do away with it completely in Windows 9. As for the 20GB install, I believe a 32GB drive would be the minimum, but you are right, that would only leave you with 12GB free.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows 8. If you think the missing start menu is bad, just wait until you try it on multiple monitors, notice there are two running task bars, notice that the two IE's are different, or try to window Metro apps. You'll have a jolly good time then. Oh, and don't forget to load up the music, video, or store apps too - your customers will appreciate the xbox games, forced content and inability to remove the storefront view while playing personal content.

This is an old, worn out, subject.

But, imo, the only changes that have been made are the arrival, on boot up, to the "Metro" screen, and the absence of the old start menu. Almost since Windows was invented, I have replaced several of their built in programs with those of my own (Paint, Disk recovery and anti virus programs, for example).

It gives me no grief, therefore, to install the classic shell, or one of the other third party start menus. Other than that, MS have, agreed, aimed this OS as a tablet priority. But you have bot been robbed of anything. The desktop is still there, at a single click. If you deploy one of the many options to by pass the Metro screen, and use the classic shell instead, you may never need to look into the Metro side again. Working in the Legacy screen has no apparent differences from the Windows 7 screen, and all the known functions are available.

To back this, I am sure all can remember the huge number of requests, from Vista onwards, for information on how to return to the Classic menu.

I don't know about the best, but an excellent free data recovery program is Recuva. If you haven't had too much disk updating since deleting files, there is a good chance that most deleted files can be recovered.

Download the free program from here http://www.filehippo.com/download_recuva/ When downloading be aware of any 'foistware' that is offered.

To attempt to recover every deleted file, select a drive in the drop-down menu and click Scan to list everything > tick Filename and click Recover to.

There are bunch of data recovery software, both free and paid you can try with but I'd recommend to go with only professional software as it can efficiently recover your crucial data from list of data loss situations without modifying or altering the actual quality.

Here are few best professional data recovery software you can try:

P.S. Avoid using the drive or saving any data as it can make deleted data overwritten and none of any data recovery software would going to help you.

Rule to copy emails to multiple public folders based on subject....

So I have an interesting dilemma.  I have been tasked to figure out how to set up a rule to automatically copy emails with a specific 5 digit pattern (12345) in the subject line to a list of specific public folders that are named in according to the 5 digit pattern.  I have already set up a rule that will copy emails with these conditions to one specific public folder but I am trying to avoid manually separating the email to their respective folders.

Is there a way to script this to have exchange look at the subject line, take the 5 digit number and compare it to the list of public folders that I will manually create and have it copy to the correct folder?

Reply:

Yes, there is a way but it isn't easy.  It's really beyond what you can reasonably expect to get in a free answer forum such as this.  It's the kind of thing you're going to have to spend many hours learning yourself or pay an Exchange and/or Outlook programmer to do for you.

"Welcome Back To [servername]" password prompt - RESOLVED!

I work at an IT consulting firm.  This morning we had multiple clients with Small Business Servers reporting similar issues: every computer in the building had the same problem.  When the user tried to open Outlook, they were being prompted for a password.  The title bar of the Window would say "Welcome Back to [mail.xyz.com]."

What we've found is that the servers downloaded their Windows Updates from yesterday, rebooted, and the Microsoft Exchange Information Store (most importantly), and the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant services did not automatically start up after the reboots.  Manually starting these services on the server resolves the issues for the Outlook clients.

I've already written a blog post about it here: http://nuangel.net/?p=1848 and just wanted to share what I had seen.

Any tricks for speeding up the initial population of the FIM portal?

I have had a bit of a search and have found a few posts where people are seeing the problem of very slow exports when initially populating the FIM portal.  I was wondering if there is a decent white paper or knowledgebase article anywhere that lists all the tricks that can be used to improve this?

With asynchronous mode turned off I am seeing about 0.5-0.6 objects/sec, if I set the synchronizationExportThrottle="Unlimited" I can push this up to about 1.6 objects/sec.

I have tried playing with the <resourceSynchronizationClient /> settings in the miiserver.exe.config file as suggested on 1dent1ty cHa0s and can get up to almost 1.8 objects/sec.

We have less than a million users in our system, so it is certainly by no means huge, but a full initial load of the portal is still going to take 5 days, which seems a little excessive to me.

Are there any other settings that can be tweaked to make this workable?

Cheers.

Reply:
If you're near a million then you're most likely outside the normal/intended size for a default installation whereby everything gets plopped into the FIM Service.  At that scale I would be aggressive in reducing scope so that you have less objects in the FIM Service.

If you're anywhere near a million objects, I would say that if it isn't huge, it is definitely in the higher percentiles among environments.

The hotfix required to get asynchronous mode has warnings about not applying it unless necessary, but it doesn't sound like you would really have an option.

If you have not already read the TechNet article about post-installation tasks, please review that to see if you have already followed its recommendations.  The highlights are to turn off full text search during the export, and don't have anything configured in the portal that you don't have to have in order to populate the data.  The rules can all be added once the data is exported to the service.

I'd like to add to the suggestions above:

I've also heard that removing any Sets with complicated filtering criteria can help.

Sidenote: with an initial load that large, you might want to consider changing your request history retention period to a day or two as that can help you save some database space.

Good luck!

Personally at that scale I'd start evaluating the necessity of the portal as part of the solution. In any case, I did a bunch of twiddling with the async options and these are what I ended up on which got me very good throughput:

exportFetchResultsPollingTimerInSeconds="3"   exportRequestsInProcessMaximum="350"   exportWaitingForRequestsToProcessTimeoutInSeconds="600"

You'll need to play with them with relation to your SQL and FIM Service perf capabilities - CPU, disk, etc.

Your initial objects per second time, .06/sec, seems quite slow. By default, using the OOB synchronous behavior, I typically see between 1500-2000 objects per hour as adds on export to FIM MA. Unless you already have complex sets in place and possibly configuration items as suggested by Chris, I believe you may have a bottleneck somewhere else.

Are the SQL DBs on the same box as FIM service, or remote? If remote, are they on same machine, are transation logs and data files on different drives? FIM seems to perform better if the two DBs are not on same disk partition. Some SQL tuning might be in order if any of the above applies to your scenario.

Thanks for the responses.
Just to clarify, these figures are from our Mirrored Production Environment, so I am hoping we will see better performanace in Production, but I wanted to have all the tweaks tried out before I have to face the fun of getting the bulk of my users into the system for real.

Craig - this particular FIM instance is to allow Self Service Password Reset, so I cannot really see any way of having fewer objects in the FIM Service.

Chris - we have turned off text search.  Unfortunately, for this case, we cannot easily remove the portal configuration as it is already in use for some users, so I guess we just have to suck it up.  I will certainly rethink this for the remaining FIM Portals that we will be deploying.

Thanks Sami for the suggestion about request history - I have reduced that and will see how things go when I kick off the next 200,000 users through the system.

Brian - much as I would like to evaluate the solution and consider doing things differently, the product decisions have been made and the design is approved - I am just the poor soul doing the implementation.  Thanks for those sample settings - I have been playing around with them and can improve things - unfortunately, though, only marginal increases.

Glen - we do have some infrastructure constraints in our test environment.  The SQL server is remote from FIM and unfortunately everything is on one drive.  Even more unfortunately that drive is a Raid 5 SAN lun - a constraint placed on us by the customer's infrastructure team.  We are hoping the Production disks will be more friendly to us.

Thanks again for the pointers.

What would be considered the normal size default installation? If declarative rules are in play then it would not be difficult to reach a million objects in the FIM Service that need to synchronized.

Is this why the FIM Capacity planning guide considers 200,000 users a large organisation and does not contain metrics exporting objects to the FIM Service?

Sorry for my candid response but I can't believe some of the replies for what is suppose to be a enterprise class product.

I'm still experimenting with these pre-R2 settings in my UAT lab (education sector - staff and students, but staff only at this point), and I've posted my findings here ... I am using declarative rules (mostly inbound though) and the following counters are from my MV (rounded):

  • #SRs: 31
  • #EREs: 25,000 (5 outbound)
  • #roles: 4,500
  • #entitlements: 2,500
  • #groups: 3,000
  • #people: 14,000

I've not yet working with a full quota of entitlements at this point, but when I do I expect the number of groups to increase by an order of magnitude.  This will bloat the MV even further (I have 61,000 MV objects right now, and expect this will end up around the 250,000 mark when the full quota of students and staff are combined).  Will update my findings then.

I appreciate many (like myself) are already working on pre-R2 projects, and R2 will be much better performed, but not everyone is going to be in a position to upgrade to R2 in the short term due to the potential retesting/rework/project risk involved (I don't expect the upgrade can be treated like a normal hotfix, and even they cost a lot in terms of regression testing, etc.).  Hence I think there will be a lot of R1 sites for some time yet.

How to detect MIIS created object ?

We use MIIS for GALsync.

I will exclude an OU which include a lot of users, contacs, groups. They will be deleted.

And I will create deleted correspondent objects, so, I need to set adding group/email forwarding for new created correspond  object  to work as before.

To do that, I have to detect at first which object is created from MIIS in specified OU.

Is there any way ?

Devices and Services: The New Microsoft Vision as summarized by Ballmer

In a letter to investors, Steve Ballmer discussed the details of the new vision for Microsoft: it can be summarized as "Devices and Services".  Before I am accused of cherry-picking, here is the whole text of Ballmer's letter:

------------------------

Last year was a big year -- we delivered strong results, launched fantastic new products and services, and positioned Microsoft for an incredible future.

For fiscal year 2012, revenue grew to a record $73.7 billion. We also maintained strong cost discipline resulting in cash flow from operations of $31.6 billion, an increase of 17 percent from the prior year. In addition, we returned $10.7 billion to shareholders through stock buybacks and dividends.

We delivered these results while preparing a pipeline of new and updated products that will launch in the year ahead. To best understand what we are about to deliver and what we're building toward, it's important to recognize a fundamental shift underway in our business and the areas of technology that we believe will drive the greatest opportunity in the future.

Our Business: Devices and Services

Last year in this letter I said that over time, the full value of our software will be seen and felt in how people use devices and services at work and in their personal lives. This is a significant shift, both in what we do and how we see ourselves -- as a devices and services company. It impacts how we run the company, how we develop new experiences, and how we take products to market for both consumers and businesses. The work we have accomplished in the past year and the roadmap in front of us brings this to life.

Devices With End-User Services

We will continue to work with a vast ecosystem of partners to deliver a broad spectrum of Windows PCs, tablets and phones. We do this because our customers want great choices and we believe there is no way one size suits over 1.3 billion Windows users around the world. There will be times when we build specific devices for specific purposes, as we have chosen to do with Xbox and the recently announced Microsoft Surface. In all our work with partners and on our own devices, we will focus relentlessly on delivering delightful, seamless experiences across hardware, software and services. This means as we, with our partners, develop new Windows devices we'll build in services people want.

Further, as we develop and update our consumer services, we'll do so in ways that take full advantage of hardware advances, that complement one another and that unify all the devices people use daily. So right out of the box, a customer will get a stunning device that is connected to unique communications, productivity and entertainment services from Microsoft as well as access to great services and applications from our partners and developers around the world.

A great example of this shift is Windows 8. Windows 8 will come to market Oct. 26, 2012, with beautiful hardware that will light up with our consumer cloud services. Windows 8 unites the light, thin and fun aspects of a tablet with the power of a PC. It's beautiful, it's functional, and it's perfect for both personal and professional use. Xbox Music, Video, Games and SmartGlass apps make it possible to select a movie from a PC, start playing it on the TV, and finish watching it on a phone. SkyDrive, our cloud storage solution, effortlessly connects content across a user's devices. Bing's powerful search technologies in Windows 8 will help customers get more done. Skype has a beautiful new Windows 8 app and connects directly into the new Office.

Office, too, is taking a major leap forward. The new Office was designed from the ground up for Windows 8 and takes full advantage of new mobile form factors with touch and pen capabilities. It unlocks new experiences for reading, note taking, meetings and communications and brings social directly into productivity and collaboration scenarios. The combination of a Windows 8 tablet with OneNote and SkyDrive has truly revolutionized how to take notes, annotate documents and share information. The ultimate experience with the new Office for both consumers and businesses will come when it is paired with a Windows 8 device and delivered as a cloud subscription service with Office 365.

Services for the Enterprise

Fantastic devices and services for end users will drive our enterprise businesses forward given the increasing influence employees have in the technology they use at work -- a trend commonly referred to as the Consumerization of IT. It's one more reason Microsoft is committed to delivering devices and services that people love and businesses need.

Today, businesses face a number of important opportunities and challenges. Enterprise IT departments are tasked with deploying technology that drives the business strategy forward. They decide what solutions will make employees more productive, collaborative and satisfied. They work to unlock business insights from a world of data. At the same time they must manage and secure corporate information that employees access across a growing number of personal and corporate devices.

To address these opportunities, businesses turn to Microsoft. They count on our world-class business applications like Microsoft Dynamics, Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, and our business intelligence solutions. They rely on our technology to manage employee corporate identity and to protect their corporate data. And, increasingly, businesses of all sizes are looking to Microsoft to realize the benefits of the cloud.

Helping businesses move to the cloud is one of our largest opportunities. All the online services people use today -- both from Microsoft and other companies -- run on servers in datacenters around the globe. The volume of Internet services used will continue to grow as people connect to the Internet from more devices for more purposes -- fueling incredible opportunity in our server business. Unique to Microsoft, we continue to design and deliver world-class cloud solutions that allow our customers to move to the cloud on their terms.

For example, a company can choose to deploy Office or Microsoft Dynamics on premises, as a cloud service or a combination of both. With Windows Server 2012, Windows Azure and System Center infrastructure, businesses can deploy applications in their own datacenter, a partner's datacenter or in Microsoft's datacenter with common security, management and administration across all environments, with ultimate flexibility and scale. Our business customers tell us these capabilities are critical to harnessing the power of the cloud so they can reach new levels of efficiency and tap new areas of growth.

Our Future: Big Opportunity

There's a remarkable amount of opportunity ahead for Microsoft in both the next year and the next decade. As we enter this new era, there are several distinct areas of technology that we are focused on driving forward -- all of which start to show up in the devices and services launching this year. Leading the industry in these areas over the long term will translate to sustained growth well into the future. These focus areas include:

  • Developing new form factors that have increasingly natural ways to use them including touch, gestures and speech.
  • Making technology more intuitive and able to act on our behalf instead of at our command with machine learning.
  • Building and running cloud services in ways that unleash incredible new experiences and opportunities for businesses and individuals.
  • Firmly establishing one platform, Windows, across the PC, tablet, phone, server and cloud to drive a thriving ecosystem of developers, unify the cross-device user experience, and increase agility when bringing new advancements to market.
  • Delivering new scenarios with life-changing improvements in how people learn, work, play and interact with one another.

We are uniquely positioned to lead in these areas given the breadth of our devices and services portfolio, as well as our large, global partner and customer base and the growing Windows ecosystem.

It truly is a new era at Microsoft -- an era of incredible opportunity for us, for the 8 million developers building apps for our devices, for the more than 640,000 partners worldwide and, most important, for the people and businesses using our products to reach their full potential.

We see an unprecedented amount of opportunity for both this year and the long term. Although we still have a lot of hard work ahead, our products are generating excitement. And when I pause to reflect on how far we've come over the past few years and how much further we'll go in the next one, I couldn't be more excited and optimistic.

As always, thank you for your support.

Does one here have any doubt's that now Windows will be seen as driving devices?  That it is really a tablet-based OS?  In fact, Ballmer is talking solely about tablets and similar devices.  His future for Windows is an OS that drives certain entertainment devices that connect with Microsoft's services.

Thus, for all of you who are just waiting a great Win9, just do not.  There is not going to be any more desktop OSes from Microsoft, not if this strategy is successful.  Microsoft is no longer happy in selling you a Windows license for your desktop and laptop.  It wants to sell you a device that would be connected to its services very much as Apple sells stuff connected to iTunes and Amazon to its store.

If I am going to characterize the Microsoft strategy in a sentence or so I would say that Microsoft aspires to become something like Apple or Amazon (both are examples for imitation) with an added twist: services for the enterprise.  There, Microsoft would try to outdo the offerings of Amazon (and it may well be successful in that score).

So, things are shaping very much as I maintained some time ago.  Microsoft is abandoning the desktop/laptop in favor of building "delightful, seamless experiences across hardware, software and services".  Where have I heard this before????  ...Hmmmm...it must have been a Steve Jobs product presentation!!!

Windows is dead.  Let's move to next thing for desktops.

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can give me help or advice on how to delete mappings on properties in user profile service via powershell.

By this I mean the property Work Phone has telephonenumber mapped to it I would like to remove this...but I cant seem to get my head around the code for it.

Hi Oguzhan,

I must admit that you are right! (I didn't pay any attention to the year) :)

Can we delete the post just not to misinform other users?

PS: I didn't knew about .D version and its modifications until now. We still have across our network some A and B versions...

We have this on our network and it is causing user account lockouts in AD.  Is there a way to reset the local machine administrator password for all the machines in the domain using Group Policy?  Is there any tool to find out which machines are causing the user account lockouts?

what is the product key

It's the Key which allows you to activate whichever program it is you are talking about.  :)

If you want to know what key you are currently using, then use Belarc advisor (www.belarc.com )

If you want to know why your system is asking for one - what program are you using that's asking for it? If it's Word, Outlook, Excel or another Office Program, then you are currently using a Trial install of Office, and need to purchase the program to acquire a Key to continue to use it.

If you are having some problem activating your system - To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
 - IN YOUR OWN THREAD, please

Reply:

I'm almost surprised your machine will run Windows 7 - the motherboard was manufactured in 2005, 4 years before Win7 was released.

It claims to be an OEM installation from Dell (according to the Product Key in use) - which is plainly impossible.

You need to either purchase a legal copy of Windows 7, or revert back to the original OS with which the machine presumably shipped - check your COA sticker to see what that was.
