Is there a way or maybe a software product that will block continuous connection attempts by a single IP address?
I believe that my client is experiencing a dictionary attack on their exchange 2003 server. This happens to my Exchange 2007 server as well. The only ports visible on the Internet is port 25.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
this forum is for Questions regarding Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 10 for the IT Pro Audience. Topics covered are: Installation, Deployment, Configuration, Security, Group Policy, Management questions. If you are a consumer looking for answers or to raise a question, it's highly recommended you head on over to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us
we can't help you unless you tell us which windows and IE versions you are using....
the website has MAJOR design and coding issues and was written for browsers of the last century, which is probably a reflection on their quality of service.
Try Internet Options>Advanced tab, click the "Reset IE Settings" button... this will reset IE's (8-10) settings to their factory defaults and disable your Addons.... the site uses google urchin tracking (why a 'bank' would do this is beyond me) and your Google toolbar may be a problem...

Hi,
I suggest you try the following steps:
1. You can run Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) to troubleshoot the issue.
1. Open Start Menu, then click all programs, select Accessories, open the system tools;
2. Right-click Internet Explorer(No Add-ons), run as Administrator.
2. Reset Internet Explorer settings and see how it works.
3. Test issue in Clean Boot mode and Safe Mode with networking
Hope this helps.

Windows 8 Upgrade Offer
The program "Windows 8 Upgrade Offer" is meant for consumer and each customer can purchase up to five units only.
Is there any program available for corporate customer who have purchased 50 units of Win7 PCs just one month before Win8 is launched?
If not, what are my options to upgrade the 50 PCs to Win 8?

TechNet and Evernote
Hi Folks,
Like most of you, when preparing for certifications I virtually live on TechNet. It's the single largest public repository of Microsoft technical information anywhere in the world, and a veritable gold mine of technical knowledge.
However, I found that the vast volumes of information produced in the course of preparation for even a single exam quickly became too much for me to easily manage via my traditional bookmarks and printouts, so I needed to find a more efficient way of managing it.
A week ago I came across a blog posting where someone suggested using the popular note taking and archival application, Evernote, along with the Web Clipper add-on, to quickly and easily clip, tag, and organize my TechNet content into Evernote notebooks, by subject and topic, for easy retrieval later.
Evernote is like a free version of Microsoft's OneNote application, but with more features and add-ons. I use three versions of Evernote interchangeably, the Windows version, the iOS version, and the Web version. They all sync seamlessly with each other over the internet, so I can work easily with whatever device I have at hand at the moment, without worrying about how changes made in one place will affect my information elsewhere.
I've been using Evernote for about a week now, and I'm very happy with it, so I just wanted to share this with you. Maybe it can benefit someone. Should you require more information, you can Bing, Google, or even ask me, and I will be happy to help.

false networking issues in Windows 7
this issue also happens in vista, but lets fix it for Windows 7.
if anyone has this issue as well in Windows 7 or knows how to fix it or has any ideas of how to fix it please tell me. its so bothersome. the OS tells me that i have a network issue, then when i try to diagnose it, it claims that it cannot find any issues. yet, it shows that i only have local access to my network when i am surfing the web....WTF?
any ideas or comments would be appreciated.

Happy with the OS, just need to resolve the connection issue!

--- make/model of the Wi-Fi card. You can get this by typing "netsh wlan sho dr" on the command prompt
----make/model of your Wi-Fi router

For those of you who have a tray icon reporting "No Internet Access" but are browsing the Internet just fine, please run the following to gather traces. We'd love to investigate what your seeing.
1) Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt (right-click, choose "Run as Administrator")
2) From the administrator Command Prompt, run "netsh trace start nid_wpp,InternetClient capture=yes"
3) Disconnect from your network
4) Reconnect to you network
5) Allow 1 minute to pass.
6) Browse to a few sites.
7) From the administrator Command Prompt, run "netsh trace stop"
Step #7 will output the location of a *.cab file. Please let me know when you have it and I will follow up with a location where it can be sent. Alternatively, if you have a place to post it (such as SkyDrive), let me know the location.
If you can also give me details regarding your network setup:
1) What ISP
2) Are you going through a proxy?
Thanks for running Windows 7 and helping us improve the experience!

For those of you connected to a Microsoft Small Business Server and are using Trend Micro Internet Security software, I have seen this problem and have been able to resolve it.
Trend installs its own Proxy Server and the Microsoft SBS also has its own proxy server. This seems to cause a conflict. I used MSCONFIG.EXE to selectively disable the Trend Proxy Server. As far as I can see, when you do this Trend is not affected at all and the bogus No Internet Access symbol in the taskbar and the X in the Network and Sharing Center both go away. Since you don't need two proxy servers, this is a good fix, at least for me.
Good luck and please let me know if this resolves the issue for you too.

I disabled the Trend Proxy Server as you suggested, and it seems to have resolved the solution.
The exclamation briefly appeared on my screen after rebooting, but disappeared after about a second or two.

MICROSOFT = APPLE on customer appreciation
So... I pre-ordered a Surface RT back in October 2012. For some reason the device could not open any attachments in my emails. I took it to the MS Store and I spent a month online with MS trying to solve the issue. Nothing worked.
The store manager told me that the new Surface Pro would be coming out in January '13, and that I could return and receive full credit for the RT purchase toward a new Surface Pro.
This morning I called the MS store and requested information on obtaining the new Pro on 2/9, with a credit for the full price of the RT. The store manager now tells me that there will be no credit and I am basically stuck with a non-performing RT, unless I wish to spend another $800 on the Pro.
The main reason I "de-Appled" (new Windows phone, new Windows 8 PC and new Surface) is because I got tired of Apple and their games. I fully believed that MS would be the real deal, with real products and real customer care and service. Now I am not so sure.

There isn't a forum for individual Microsoft stores. Ask the store manager where to send your feedback regarding store policy.
If you are having the attachment problem in Microsoft's Windows Mail app, visit http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/winapps to let Microsoft know about the attachment problem.
If you are having the attachment problem in a mail app made by another company (e.g. yahoo mail), contact the app's author (e.g. yahoo).
I am not sure where you spent a month online, but your post history seems to be a list of bad forum choices, it is not surprising that you got poor support. You should came here first if you don't know where to ask.

Hi Tim,
Are you using a custom data processing extension? If so, I suggest that you first remove the custom extension before installing SQL Server 2012 SP1, and then add the custom extension after SQL Server 2012 SP1 is installed correctly.
Hope this helps.

Faster SQL Server Scalar Functions III ?
About 5 years ago I spent at least a bit of effort lobbying for improved scalar functions; I also posted this issue:
I sometimes would respond to scalar function issues in the forum pointing to this MS Connect issue about improving the performance of scalar functions here:
I suppose that I realized that it would probably take at least two SQL Server iterations (2008 and 2012) to get this kind of fix. Maybe this might come in on SQL Server 2015?
If improved Scalar Functions is something you would like to see, pleast post to this MS Connect issue.

Installation of DPM 2012, standard server hardware, Blade, VM
Hi all,
I am in a bad situation: We have got several bigger DPM servers running on standard (powerfull) servers.
Because of the future update to DPM 2012 our boss wants us to check alternative possibilities of installation targets.
He would prefere VMs but thats not an option for me.
Our storage are FC connected EMC², FTS DX and NetAPP systems.
So we would like to keep "real" hardware and we are collecting reasons pro and contra.
Our DPM servers are under heavy load
My cents:
1. Real Hardware
Pro: Powerful, DPM is independent from other systems, good expansion options (FC cards, NICs etc.)
in case of hardwrae failure only one system is affected
Contra: expensive, power consumption, rack space
2. Blade
Pro: central management, fast deployment and replacement in case of hardware failure, fast as standard servers, rack space
Contra: central management( virtual WWNs and MACs, in case of failure of management system DB recovey is difficult, knowledge of management system is needed in backup team), bad expansion options (only two FC ports in Blade -> Tape Library and Storage on same port is bad)
3. VM
Pro: easy to deploy OS, flexible, cheap, rack space, power concumption
Contra: not as fast as real hardware( I know, i Know but I have been working with it (VMware, hyper-V, XEN...)for more thean 10 years), running on Failover Cluster is bad, because that cluster niode cannot be rebootet etc (passthrough LUN), Tape Library has to be iSCSI (our existing ones are FC), if storage on which VMs are running has failure backup system is down, too.
Any further hints and ideas are more than welcome
Thx in advance

Hi,
Just want to mention that Windows 2012 Hyper-V now supports virtual Fiber Channel Controller so you can now attach the FC tape library to the virtual DPM 2012 server.

Sharepoint 2013 migrate from dev to prod
We are planning our Sharepoint 2013 deployment. We will have two environments: Dev and Prod. I've been looking for information on methods of migrating SP2013 sites that have been created in the Dev environment to Prod.
The Dev environment will be on a single server: SQL 2012, Web Server, App server all on a single W2008R2 box.
Prod will be three tiered: Web front end on one box, app on another, and SQL on its own box.
Once we have developed acceptable sites on the Dev environment what is the best method for migrating the configuration to the Prod environment?
Thanks,
Dan

Depending on whether you mean site collections or sites, it sounds like the Backup-SPSite/Restore-SPSite (for site collections) and Export-SPWeb/Import-SPWeb (for sites) cmdlets will do what you need.
This assumes the users in your development environment are the same users in your production environment, and that all customizations in development exist as well in production.

Reset primary key value in sql server table
Solutions :-
DBCC CHECKIDENT('Enter Your Table Name', RESEED, 0)
Hope this Help...
Reply:
That command does not technically "reset the primary key". It recreates the IDENTITY field values in a table, which may or may not be the primary key. This is not something you would normally do.

Ownership and permission on a 3boot Win XP, Win 7 & Win 8 system
I have a computer with Windows Xp, Windows 7 and Windows 8 installed.
I moved my personal folders in a different partition from the ones with the systems.
Though I'm the principal user of the computer I'm not the only one.
I used to leave my personal folders/files without restriction. Now I wanted to implement a more private and secure policy.
I removed all the previous ownerships and privileges and took the ownership from my regular account in Windows 8 (member of the Administrators group).
I gave to myself and to the Administrators group full control. To Everyone only "Read & Execute", "List Folder content" and "Read".
In Windows 8 I have the expected results: myself and the Build-in Administator are able to do everythings, others not.
In Windows XP (I'm a user in the Admministrators group) I have the same results (of course the owner is not recognised in Windows XP).
In Windows 7 I'm having problems (I'm there too a member of the Adminitrators group):
For example, if you right click on a file you see the shield beside Delete.
I tried to lower the notification in the User Account Control Setting to the second leyer from the bottom, so I can go straigth inside my folders, for instance.
But I do not want to remove completely this feature.
I tried to give also to myself (not only the admin groups) the full control, but of course it didn't change anything.
The most annoiyng problem is that Outlook cannot open the data file in my folders because it doesn't have enough rigth!
I tried also to give System full control, but with no success.
The same will happen with a cloud service program which complain the folder I choosed is Read-Only.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Lauro

Thanks Tracy.
If I leave only SYSTEM and my name in Win 8, then I will not able to access the file when I use Win XP or 7.
That's why I also gave full control to the Administrators group, which is seen by all the Windows versions.

SCCM 2007 R2 SP2 site deployment across multiple AD forest - Unable to change parent site
Hi,
I am in the middle of a partial-migration of our SCCM 2007 environment.
I have a deployed a new primary site in one AD forest (SCCMSite A). There is pre-existing site (SCCMSite B) from a different AD forest which needs to be added as a child site to Site A.
I have followed the documentation to add the sender address to both sites using a local account.
Added the machine names and local accounts to the local SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_ groups.
Manually exchanged their certificates.
Firewall ports 445 and 8530 have been opened for bidirectional traffic. However, when I connect to the child site and click on 'Set parent Site', the Drop down to select the new parent site is greyed out. (Both the parent and the to-be child site do not host the Asset Intelligence Synchronization role). Has anyone come across this situation before.

If the Site B has Asset Intelligence Sync Point, please remove it.

Hi Arthur,
Thanks for responding. Asset intelligence is not running on either of the sites. It runs on our central site which is couple of levels up in our hierarchy.

I have tried making the child site as a central site. Then went back into the same screen and this time was able to select 'Report to' new parent site. Duh! Did not realise I had to make it a central site before changing its parent.
I have gone past this screen now, having other errors in the sender.log but that is a different problem, will create a separate thread.
Thank you,
