msExchRequireAuthToSendTo attribute for the DL shows "not Set" instead of False

msExchRequireAuthToSendTo attribute for the DL shows "not Set" instead of False

Strange situation.

Exchange 2010 SP1 on Server 2008 R2 ENT

We are trying to allow Outside emails to be delivered to certain DL  In EMC we either unchecked "require that all senders are authenticated" or use exchange powershell to set this attribute to "false"

the issue = In active directory, the msExchRequireAuthToSendTo attribute for the DL shows "not Set" instead of False which causes mail not to be delivered.  We then have to change this attribute to False in ADUC r. (Our exchange admins have no access to this in ADUC.)  Any ideas why this is happening and the attribute is not showing Flase?

Thanks!

Reply:
Do your Exchange Admins have Permission to modify that attribute? Check the permissions on the attribute itself to see what effective permissions your Exchange Admins have. If you've customized your security settings and aren't utilizing the Roles that come with Exchange, you might not have all the permissions set that you need to do what you want on those. Also, if you have deny permissions set on your exchange admins somewhere, that may be causing problems as well.

Windows 8 Tutorial on desktop, and first boot

On the desktop add a shortcut. Built into Windows, preconfigured to show up until user deletes it .This shortcut would open a tutorial that takes over screen control, where interface elements, charms, switcher etc. would automatically slide out, and user is asked to participate in using the features.

I watched this painful video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4boTbv9_nU), and I could imagine some people will be this confused. Having a shortcut on the desktop, would mean there is always a way for user to learn new UI functions. Also during Windows install process, provide an optional step, to use this tutorial on first boot. Obviously have clear instructions in the physical manual as well. Advertising can be used to sell Windows 8, but also educate users.

I also think this is a good idea. At least some kind of Welcome to Windows 8 Tour, or something similar, would be very useful. There's a lot of things in Windows 8 that is not so obvious for existing Windows users.

Hi

That was priceless. :)

I don't disagree with some kind of tutorial in a location where it would be hard to miss.

They are kicking around some ideas. One of the best that I have seen is to place a link on each type of the new components, such as the Start Screen or Desktop, named "What's this". Hovering over this link would show a description and include info about how navigate within that screen and return to where you came from. These could be deleted once they were no longer needed.

Any other ideas?

I cannot run the right click tool "Wake On LAN" in the Console Extensions successfully. It says "Wakeup sent to the following MACs for <PC Name> <MAC Address>". But my PC does not receive the WOL magic packet at port 7 or 9.

My SCCM 2007 has been configured with port 9 with Unicast mode. If I use Microsoft method to wake up PC (htat is, send an advertisement with Enable Wake On LAN), I can receive the WOL magic packet.

Has anyone used the "Wake On LAN" in the Console Extensions successfully? Does it use Unicast or Subnet-directed broadcasts?

This is happening only in the New Portal Silverlight UI  but it doesn't happen in the old portal.

As i know, if my service is throwing any exception, this will stop the service but never come back to ready state. but what's happening now is weired for me since the status is keep chaning and come back to ready state. and the worker role is fully functional.

How to disable Touch Functions in Windows 8 ?

Hi!

I have a problem with a windows 8 functionality that I can't disable. In fact, I have updated my Windows 7 computer to Windows 8. He doesn't have any touch-screen at all, but it seems that Windows 8 Touch functionalities are enabled (weird isn't it ?).

Any advise is welcome.

Ben

PS: Does installing Visual Studio 2012 (MSDNAA version) can have something to do with this ? (I know it has installed virtual hardware.) In that case I'll just uninstall it and get back to Visual Studio 2010.

Sequencing Workstation Image - Should Microsoft Office be included?

It has always been best practise to include Microsoft Office on your sequencing image on the basis that many other apps are dependent on MS Office and will install differently if MS Office is present. In fact the MS Sequencing Guide for V4.6 has this as explicit advice. This then leads to one of the potential problems with enterprise adoption of APP-V, namely what happens if you deploy MS Office 2007 as part of a base workstation build, sequence several apps against it, and then subsequently want to upgrade to Office 2010. The implication of this is that you would then need to identify all of your APP-V Apps that were sequenced against Office 2007 and re-sequence them against Office 2010.

However I notice that in the new Microsoft sequencing guidelines for APP-V 5.0 the advice to incude Office on the sequencing image is no longer present. So my question is two-fold:-

  • Is my original fear that an upgrade of Office has the implication that all APP-V Apps sequenced against the old Office version will need re-sequencing?
  • Why has the advice to include Office on the sequencing image been dropped from the APP-V 5.0 sequencing guide. Is there a subtlety in the many APP-V 5.0 changes that mitigate this issue.

Any advice would be gratefully received......

Reply:

The problem with best practices is that if you ask 3 people what their best practices are, you'll get 4 different answers.

I've always recommended that Office not be part of the sequencing VM for the reason that you've outlined. I would only recommend adding Office, if you are sequencing an application that relies on Office functionality, otherwise leave it off.

I doubt that there is anything in App-V v5 that has caused a change in the recommendations, it's more likely to do with sequencing practices.

Aarron's approach would be the best imho.

If you are using VM's however i would probably recommend creating a snapshot with office and a snapshot without. You can then switch betweeen the 2 depending on whether your application needs office or not.

WIM Images

Hi there.

Can sonmeone please clear something up for me?  I'm still learning so this maybe a little 'rookie' for some.

I have read somewhere that when you capture a WIM image, the HAL is disconnected, so effectively you could put any WIM image on any hardware. Is this true?  If so are there any limitations?

I help run a business which looks after schools, we have around 36 on our books.   In each school we map out just two images.  A curriculum image, for pupils and teachers, and an admin image (which doesnt contain the curriculum sofware) for the admin/clerical staff.  Up until now I have always built an image on each hardware type, then uploaded an image to the server.  This new information tells me that i'm doing it wrong and I should just build two images for each site, then continually inject drivers to the WIM image as I come accross new hardware.

So lets say I have a curriculum image, with all the school software on.  I then capture this up to the server using MDT2012.  Later, the school buy a new laptop for a new teacher and it is a completely different model to the rest in school.  If I deploy down my curriculum image and there are 3 or 4 drivers missing, I can simply mount the WIM using ImageX and inject the missing drivers, then from that point on I can image the same model laptop with having to chase drivers.

Have I understood this correct?

Regards JH

Reply:

If you are going to deploy Vista or newer you don't need to consider about HAL.

If you are using MDT you will create a image that is hardware independent.

You will instead import the different drivers and by "mdt rules" the right drivers will apply. There many diffrent approaches when it comes to handle drives in MDT.

Here is some good exemples: http://www.deployvista.com/Default.aspx?tabid=78&EntryID=132

------------------------------------
Reply:

I concur with Henrik's answers. One thing to note though is that adding drivers to the image is counter-productive as it bloats the image and is not generally recommended. That's the point of Henrik saying the image should be hardware independent.

MDT is more than a simple imaging system like Ghost -- it's a deployment system. Thus, although the image is a part of the process, it in not the whole process. For drivers and other hardware specific software, MDT easily injects these into the process after the image has been deployed to the system. There are different ways of getting this done depending upon your environment, but it's all part of MDT. This goes for applications also. With MDT, you no longer have to think in terms of a monolithic, end-all, be-all image. MDT brings flexibility to the table and allows you to dynamically deploy things based upon the run-time conditions of the system including hardware, role, and location.

Email sent, thanks Amnon.

In each school there are, lets say a maximum of ten different machines, having deployed windows by disk to each machine over time (the hard way) I've yet to see any device that needs more that 5 drivers after a standard deployment.

So lets say there is a maximum of 50 drivers needed for each school in addition to what comes on the windows disk.  WOuld that really 'bloat' the images that much?  I think it'd be fine so if I can get them in, instead of having an image for each device.  I would like to have just four for each site.

X86 - CURRICULUM IMAGE (with Drivers)
X64 - CURRICULUM IMAGE (with Drivers)
X86 - ADMIN IMAGE (with Drivers)
X64 - ADMIN IMAGE (with Drivers)

This is my aim.  What would you suggest is the best method to achieve this goal?

Regards JH

------------------------------------
Reply:
No one recommends or advocates having an image for each device. Please re-read my answer. MDT will dynamically "inject" or add things to the system after the base (vanilla) image is deployed. This includes drivers, software, updates, etc. As mentioned, MDT is a complete process, not a simple imaging solution. Thus, the realistic goal as far as the image goes is having a single, vanilla image that you apply to all devices as *part* of the entire automated deployment process.

Some people still swear by it, even in 2012 which is just incredible.

In regards to the original question - I'd also suggest opening up the MDT help file and following it though. MDT is extremely well documented and most people assume the help file won't be helpful so they don't bother looking, thankfully this just isnt the case and it will be able to explain both the theory and the practicalities of making images + drivers.

Well, I'm glad I'm headed in the right direction then.  After what I read I knew I was doing it wrong.  I simply dont have the time to spend on this that I would like to.  I can squeeze in some time here and there in the 'real world' aside of meetings and I'm enjoying getting to grips with MDT.  I started with MDT2010 but have never really delved deep enough into it to take advantage of its full features. I'm only applying its uses on a small scale in small environments so I probably wont need to use every feature.  However I do I have a 3 server and 4 client test rig at home (vms) which I use to practice on.  I have been pointed in the right direction so yes, I have some reading ahead of me.

Working in small schools with low budgets, a lot of the software isnt deployable.  There are no silent install commands and some of the software doesnt have MSIs.  Some we even have to hack the code to get it to work.

You say ideally you would have one vanilla image that would go to all equipment.  Suppose you had quite old legacy equipment that couldnt take 64 bit.  Is it possible have one task sequence that would 'automatically' select x64 or x86?  That would be handy.

It is possible to have 1 sequence deploy multiple OS's of multiple architectures - it does mean some hacking though which given where you are with MDT right now I would not recommend. SCCM can handle it seamlessly, but not MDT.

Your best bet is to make/test 1 sequence and when it's all working, duplicate it for the other architecture.

Thanks, I thought as much given the tests I have run previously.  So it looks like I will be narrowing it down to just four images as mentioned in a previous post.  Quite happy with that. Now to allocate some time to practice.

We mostly see Samsung and Toshiba equipment in schools so I'll have to see if I can find a driver download manger for these manufacturers as well to easily get hold of what I need since the document I have only talks about HP and Lenovo.  The toshiba model range in particular is mind boggling.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

To be clear, you do need separate images for x86 and x64. These could actually be contained in the same WIM (WIMs can contain multiple images), but they must be separate images.

Saving you time is the whole of automation but if you don't take advantage of the automation features, that are there for you, then well, you only have yourself to blame. It's like using that hand-held screwdriver for the screws you are putting in instead of unwrapping the power drill and learning how to use it because it will take some time to learn how to use the new power drill and charge it up. That's somewhat valid if you only have 5 screws, but if you have hundreds, thousands, or more screws, it makes no sense.

Loading data that comes in every second of every day

We are looking for something to help us load LARGE amount of data ... streaming in EVERY second.  Is streamlight deisgned for this or do we need to look at another product.  We use SSIS already for our data loads and would like to stay in the MS tools / SQL Server space.

Please advise

Reply:
Hi RichardB_DBA ,

To provide fast data insert operations, SQL Server ships with several of standard bulk load methods.

1. Integration Services Data Destinations – The method for performing bulk load from the Integration Services ETL tool.
2. BCP – The command line utility for performing bulk load.
3. BULK INSERT – The method for performing bulk load in Transact-SQL
4. INSERT ... SELECT – The method for performing bulk load in process with SQL Server from local queries or any OLE DB source. This method is only ailable as a minimally logged operation in SQL Server 2008.
5. SELECT INTO – The method for creating a new table containing the results of a query; utilizes bulk load optimizations.

For more information about the data loading performance: please see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd425070(v=sql.100).aspx

Hi Richard,

How much data do you consider a large amount? You might be able to get away with having a SSIS package that runs in an infinite loop. If the job runs in an infinite loop, you can avoid all the start-up costs involved with running a SSIS package. Since there isn't any information on your environment, I have no idea if it will work for you, but it is the easy option since you are using SSIS already. If you have a test environment, I'd test it out and see if it falls behind. If you really need to cut the overhead of using SSIS, you might need to code it in .Net.

I haven't worked with StreamInsight, but my understanding is that it is used when loading data into a database is impractical. If you are attempting to load data into your database as quickly as possible without doing any processing on it, StreamInsight is probably not the solution you are looking for.

Delegation of Tasks

Hello,

I was wondering if it was within the featureset of exchange 2013 to be able to assign tasks to subordinates, in both web access, and other tools in mixed operating system environments. It's not too big of a deal if it's not possible through 3rd party or Non-windows applications if it's possible through OWA.

Thanks.

Scheduled task would not run if not logged in, although fixed need to understand why?

Hi

Please could someone help shed some light. I have spent all day investigating a scheduled task failing, the platform is Server 2003 SP2, and we have a task that converts file types and creates files for our customer. During all day investigation/testing we seemed to have a situation where the task would complete successfully if we were logged on to the box at the time of running but fail half way through at a certain point if noone was logged on. We believe it was failing when trying to use a fileconverter program to convert a file format or trying to write the new file to the destination directory. We tested for several hours homing in on the issue with consistant results. everytime we logged out the process would fail and when we were logged in it would be successful.

We decided to try to create another scheduled task identical in everyway and run that to see if somehow the first one was corrupt, we did this and low and behold it worked, great we thought we've sussed it, so we then disabled the new task and reenabled the old one to confirm it was still corrupt but it worked also, now however many times we try the original task will not fail again.

This may sound like I now have no issue but it is very important I can explain the cause as it is part of a very high profile project, and no one will accept that I don't know why it wasn't working. Does anyone know what disabling and reenabling the original task may have done to resolve the issue considering nothing else was changed?

Thanks

Leon

Hello,

First, did you check the Scheduled Task error log when the task did fail ? What was the returned error message and code ? (Advanced, View Log in Scheduled Task window).

Hi

Yes I did check this and it did not report anything, as far as the schecdular was concerned it was run. Additional logging in the program showed that it failed at a certain point. The task script creates a copy of an image file then calls a image converter program which converts the format of that image then the script copies the converted image to another directory. The log states that the image is not found in the new directory, so either the converter program did not run or it failed to copy, we were homing in on this until it just started working again.

Thanks

How can I transfer purchased windows 8 apps to another account?

Hi, let me explain. I have one Microsoft e-mail account in sync with my windows 8 computer already, and I have purchased numerous apps with that account already. However I have an Xbox live account too under a different Microsoft e-mail and I also have made a windows 8 account with that email too. I re-downloaded all my apps ( Had to sign in with my first email to do that) but when I try to play them and it tries to sign into Xbox live, it says I have to use the email I purchased the apps in order do get achievements and cloud storage. So now i'm stuck, I wont be able to get any achievements on my Xbox account or cloud storage. So what i'm asking, Is there a way that I can transfer my apps and licences to use with my other email that's linked to my Xbox or will I have to (and this is hard for me to write) pay for them all over again? Please any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

SharePoint running locally in a web server or use SharePoint Online in Office 365?

For external users can access project items, or teams to collaborate inside and out of office. Which would be best?

Khem,

Can you describe a little more your need?

A usual solution is work with SharePoint Server (On Premise) and create a FBA authentication for external users.

The easiest way to setup external sharing is with Office 365. It comes out-of-the-box. Read my blog posts about it:

I Have a Question

Reading the notes contained within this site I am not exactly sure how best to phrase my question regarding the the issues I am currently, and have been experiencing, since the end of October with Windows 7 Home Premium.  From the start; accessing the computer on October 27, 2012, it was more than obvious that changes to the system had occurred. Shortcuts were removed from the desktop.  Files that I would certainly consider personal in nature, as they contained tax information, banking information, and many other documents similar in nature.  It goes without saying that this issue was cause for concern and equally confusing.  The particular file was not only password protected I also had additional security measures in place.  The file had not only been accessed, it was also left open.  This computer is my own, its also one I use exclusively, no other users.  Additionally, I use very strong passwords and I have, or had anyway, various security measures in place.  This statement is not meant to implying invincibility.  I am very aware that any system is vulnerable.  In an attempt  to determine what had occurred, the one oddity really made little or no sense were numerous Wordpad files I had accumulated and they continue to up until this very day. This "hacker" or super "virus" is the most accommodating o I have ever heard of as is kind enough to leave notes behind detailing the many changes that had been made.  Realizing the tone is sarcastic my issue is that from the onset the folks at Microsoft have assured me that they make no changes to systems, and they do not access systems without prior consent.  I believe that I have and questioned every support area they have,  regarding my issues.  I have no idea how many calls I have made to this Organization and not anyone has made mention of the items I have read within this Community site.  The bulk of support responses were either virus or hacked.  Either certainly possible.  Initially, it made sense but it continues to happen and I lose more access and control of my machine on almost a daily basis.  Although I am listed as the Administrator whoever the "trustedintaller" is has "Full Control" of the machine.  There are files and drives I cannot access, files I can't remove, there many areas where I can't save a file and, I have had programs completely removed and I am unable to add any??  The error I typically receive is that I am unable to access this drive, file and so on.  And the one message I truly enjoy the most is the one that states that I unable add or remove a program, save to a file to a certain area,, access a certain area with first receiving Administrator approval.  I have no idea where to even start with that one.  Without question the one item that truly displeases me most and causes me  great concern is the group of Administrative type programs that I would label as the type that run in the background. Task Manager, Services, Firewall, Component Services, there are others some I am unable view or access any more.  I even took the liberty to remove a few.  If you are the inquisitive type, hit the Start button and then at the bottom where it says "Search Programs and Files" enter one highlighted programs above.  This is one area that I would be very interested to know if other folks have these same types programs running on there systems.  If we were discussing a work environment these types programs or access restrictions would make perfect sense.  The predominant issue(s), for myself anyway, is that its not clear what functionality of what the programs is.  Without any clarification is extremely difficult to determine if they are gathering information, are they motoring activity, there are some that I have absolutely no idea why they are on the system.  I have removed programs are or were that do not will not use, somehow that end-up back on the computer??   All I am really am looking is clarification.  Additionally, not one of the Support Groups I have spoken with has mentioned or referenced has any of the items above or any of the items I have read one this site.  I offered on many occasions to forward the Wordpad notes to perhaps make it easier to clarify if we are both looking at the same thing, not interested.  I finally reinstalled Windows 7 taking back to day one I have lost  a huge amount of information.  I have backup but difficult to reinstall when I can not reinstall some programs.  I Support folks have offered the $99 fix it deal, quite a few times,  which I was not completely resistant to, other than I truly believe the access restrictions and the other issues I am experiencing are the result of program changes or adjustments Microsoft is making.  Based on whats occurring and the lack response they have not convinced me that their updates or adjustments will correct the issues.  And in the spirit of full disclosure I am an Internal Auditor by trade and have done so for 30+ years.  Based on the lack any solid answers, absolutely no insight or direction is causes my reluctance to take them up on there offer.  I even agreed with on individual who assured me that the issue, if were to comply their $99 offer, would be corrected. I agreed if they would also agree refund the monies in the event the continued or recurred. Apparently that's only a one way street.    The machine is basically worthless at this point.  I have high level of concern based what I am experiencing and I have a zero level of comfort regarding putting any personal information on this system. I am currently in process of changing operating system and this is a project that would most likely be done with this provided I could access my C:Drive and the E:Drive, which I partitioned based on direction from Microsoft, this was to aid in reprogramming process, but I did not move quick enough and now I am unable access C:, D: or E:.  I can honestly say that reinstall would be complete by this point had I received any help Microsoft when I called last.  And make that statement based on call made Tuesday evening.  The two Support folks I spoke were great, very polite, no issues other than they needed to transfer me to another area.  From that point I got Tech Support  and do not remember the gentleman name, not relevant,   I attempted to explain my issue which was and still is, needed to access the C:Drive but I blocked from doing so. Initially, I did not a service ticket number, that did not go well at all.  I  stated that based on the information the provide each time I call I should be easy to locate. (Name, Phone#, email).  From there , based my request and lack of a ticket#, he made very clear that he was a Tech Support Professional and apparently I was not being receptive to extensive knowledge in that I was not was very clear on the issue I need assistance with, and the only way this was the $99 deal.  The question I asked was "how do I access the C:Drive when the "trustedinstaller" has it setup as "access denied"????  That is all I needed and I would then have been able add the new software and I would be back in business.  But the Professional reiterated to me that I have a virus and I need to pay the $99 to have this issue addressed.  My statement to him was that if this is indeed a virus, it is the most sophisticated virus I have seen or heard of and its knowledge of Microsoft Programming is phenomena they hire the individual that wrote it.  I also mentioned the Professional that there are TechNet Bulletins on their system that describe the issues I am experiencing almost verbatim.  It's detailed in more than one.  The response was the same, $99.  No reason to go any further, for some reason I felt the need to mention to the Professional that my first stint in college was actually computer programming.  It was COBOL, FORTRAN, DOS, not that same type of programming as this but I felt comfortable with the questions I  had asked, it really seemed clear to me.  His final response was if change your mind you call us and let us know you want to do.  I assured him that there would be absolutely no more calls and that it was obvious I am wasting his time as well as my own and I have worked at this with Microsoft for over a moth and and I have gotten absolutely nowhere.

That's what brings me to this Community site for help.  I would appreciate any insight, observations, similar issues any help at all.  Even if that insight is that I am way off base and its an issue strictly related to my system. I wish I had had the foresight to visit this site sooner.  Thank you in advance help with this, I do appreciate it

While this epic tale was difficult in the extreme to read due to being one huge gigantic clump of text (seriously dude, paragraphs...is it any wonder no one answered you), I mustered through the meat of it.  While I have not had the displeasure of reading it all, I must say the symptoms you describe, in my opinion can ONLY be a result of a virus or a hack job, or both.  Honestly I am leaning toward both.  Some of this activity sounds like a virus but other stuff sounds like someone is out there messing with you personally.

Regardless of what you think about your security, I offer that it is not enough.  Someone has either physical access to the PC and the passwords to it, or can get at it over an unsecured wireless area.  Say all you want about how that's not possible, but the proof of the pudding is in the taste.  And this pudding here is seriously spoiled.

I would get access to another PC, then DISCONNECT it from ANY network.  No cables, no wireless, nothing.  Pull the affected drive and slave it to this new system and grab any and all files you want to save and after passing them through a GOOD virus checker, store them on some unrelated media.  Then wipe the screwed up drive, reinstall and start over.

And before you put any of those PCs back on any network, hie thee unto a good virus program and firewall and secure wireless.

And seriously, in all truth, you need to learn how to post better.  99% of the people who open this thread are going to look at that globule of verbage and instantly say TL;DR.

Prerequisites getting ridiculous for roles and features

Maybe it's just me that thinks this, but what is with the crazy prerequisites for some roles in Windows Server 2012?

I want to keep my server fast, and so I try to keep things lean. The server I'm replacing was a DC, router and VPN access point, so tried to set this up the same way.

To route data and allow VPN access I went to install RRAS, but I have to include DirectAccess (completely pointless, as I don't have IPv6 internet connectivity). It needs IIS (no idea why, I do all admin via the console) and the Windows Internal Database. How can this possibly be justified?

I thought I'd install IPAM as on the DC is one of the most logical places in my mind to put it. It failed to install with the most unhelpful "server requires a reboot" message. Fast forward through 4 reboots and reattempts before I finally discovered it can't be run on a DC, leaving a broken Windows Internal Database install in its wake.

Is it just me that thinks some of these decisions are slightly mad? I'm considering scrapping the work I've done so far and going back to 2008R2.

~~ Graham

Sorry, but this is by design. Installing those prerequisites are mandatory to install the new unified RRAS server role in Windows Server 2012.
