How do I shut off ALL pop up dialogue boxes in Windows 7. I find it incredibly annoying to be moving the cursor while reading and have a pop up box continuing to pop up telling me exactly what I was already reading.  Or have a pop up box come up telling me that this program is not responding.  Gee, I must be an incredible DUMMY if I could not tell this on my own.  Now I need a pop up box to tell me how dumb I am.  Give me a break.  A suggestion for Microsoft.  Get rid of all dialogue boxes.  Set something up that if a person actually wants more information, they can point the cursor at an item and right click, then get a pop up box.

Fun with the .NET Micro Framework

Hi Folks,

I recently bought an Arduino microcontroller, and yesterday while researching it I came across this blog by Pete Brown, Microsoft's XAML guru, talking about a recent Arduino variant called the Netduino. Unlike the Arduino, which is programmed using a simplified version of C++, the Netduino uses C# and the Microsoft .NET Micro Framework (which is an open source version of the .NET platform for small devices), with Visual Studio as its development environment.

Arduino, an open source project, is probably the most popular platform for "physical computing" in which a computer equipped with sensors is used to interact with the physical world in often imaginative ways. It has limitless possibilities for anyone interested in creating interactive environments using computers. Arduino has a large and diverse following, and has spawned several variants, including the Netduino.

Studying as hard as we do for our Microsoft exams, sometimes we can get a little jaded, leaving us craving something fun to spice up our training. If we don't mind getting our hands dirty, then the Netduino could be a useful complement to our training in C#, the .NET Framework, and Visual Studio. Rather than moving data around in a database, for example, we could now be moving things around in the real world, using the same C# that we know and love.

For C# novices, the Netduino could be an educational adventure, complementing book learning by showcasing the versatility of the .NET Framework in an exciting real-world environment. For veteran C# programmers, coding in a novel environment where you're limited only by your imagination could stretch you in new ways. Either way, the Netduino could make learning fun.

Feel free to explore Netduino if you like, and let us know if it enhances your learning. BTW, I ordered my Netduino yesterday, and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival.

James

For anyone else who might be interested, this is the main information page on the Micro Framework:

An this is a page with suggestions on "selecting hardware", since there are several manufacturers that provide devices that are ready for programming with the Micro Framework:

Hi Alberto,

Thanks for the extra information, particularly the last link. I bookmarked it, and I marked your post as helpful.

I'm new to the .NET Micro Framework, so you're giving me all kinds of possibilities here.

Hi Folks,

If you're considering getting started with Netduino and the .NET Micro Framework, following are two good introductory books that I would recommend:

1. Getting Started with Netduino, by Chris Walker (inventor of Netduino)

2. Getting Started with the Internet of Things, by Cuno Pfister

Both books are available at Amazon.com for $9.99 in the Kindle edition. Enjoy.

unstalling not genuine window

how Ican unstall a not genuine window and reinstall my old window

Using certificates for file authentication

I have a windows 7 machine not part of the domain that I've installed a user certificate on. Currently this certificate is used for VPN authentication and I would like to use it to access file shares as well. The certificate is from the domains CA, so I don't have to worry about 3rd party certificates.

In addition to adding it to the local certificate store, I used credential manager and imported it in there. When I try to access the file shares I receive an error message stating that it was unable to find the remote machine. When I review the event logs of the server I could see no connection attempts. If I modify credential manager to use domain username and password I am able to access the file shares.

Am I missing a step either on the server or client to configure this correctly?

Please confirm with your IT stuff if the CA can pass the file authentication.

Meanwhile, regarding CA issue, it is better to post in Server Forum.

Can't force IE to be the default browser with GPO.

I'm trying to force IE to be the default browser on my domain. I've set the Default Domain Policy to use IE, but it never gets changes on any of my clients. I'm running a mix of XP Pro and Win 7 Pro 32 & 64 bit.

I've read a ton of threads and they all say the same thing as this site. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverGP/thread/e63fe81b-1ad8-4303-ad1d-e2f6e3d8cb0a

When I click on Import and then Modify settings, the "make default" button is greyed out and the tell me if IE isn't the default browser is checked. I've run gpupdate /force about 10 times on my server and PC. rebooted my PC a couple times too. When I run RSOP on a client the only thing that shows is this:

Here is my Default Domain Policy:

Hi,

How about running gpresult/z on cmd? And I also would like to know do you mean that the default web browser is not IE after appling the policy? Then to troubleshoot the issue, please first run gpresult/z and check out all users applied settings.

In addition, please create another GPO with the setting configured follow the below link, and apply it to some test users and check the result:

http://www.ehow.com/how_6356764_make-ie-default-browser-gpo.html

Hope this helps.

When I open up IE on the users PC, I get the popup that says that internet explorer is not your default browser, would you like to make it the default. I ran gpresult /z and it has this under the user applied settings:

        Internet Explorer Programs
        --------------------------
            GPO: Default Domain Policy
Import the current Program Settings: Yes

If you look at my screenshot above, you'll see that IE is set to be the default.

I have already done what's in the link you provided.

I have also created a new GPO, assigned it to a specific user, enforced it, and still it didn't make IE the default browser.

Hi,

And I would like to know whether the issue are occuring on all of your client of some of your client, in addition, as we can see in the screenshot above, 64 bit IE could not be set as default  browser.

If the issue occurs on some of your client, then please help to narrow down the issue, so that we could troubleshoot it further.

It happens to all the clients.

I'm sure that's the problem is that it keeps trying to use IE 64-bit. But how do I make it use IE 32-bit on the DC when I'm setting the GPO? I can't uninstall IE 64-bit from the DC. Am I supposed to add GPM to a machine that only has 32-bit IE installed and then edit the GPO from there?

Hi,

As this policy applys to client, so it does not matter what IE version you are using in your DC. I would like suggest you open the below path in your client:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer

And the iexplore.exe is the 32bit IE, it should be the default browser.

Please also refer to the below similar thread regarding to use group policy to set 64 bit IE as default browser:

How do I set the 64 – bit version of IE 9 to be the default, as opposed to the 32 – bit version

Installing Sharepoint 2010 on Windows 8 - windows authentication

Hi All,

I have just managed to install SharePoint 2010 foundation on my Windows 8(Basic) machine.

It has IIS 8.

Everything seems to work fine except for windows authentication.

I don't get Windows authentication option under IIS- Authentication. Windows Authentication do exists as a module in IIS.

I even don't get windows Authentication as add/remove features under IIS configuration.

At present I am using Basic authentication to access my site. SharePoint Designer 2010 does not allow me to open SharePoint site in basic authentication mode.

How do I enable Windows Authentication ?

Please help!

SharePoint 2010 is not supported on Windows 8.  SharePoint 2010 is only supported on Windows 7, 2008, and 2008 R2.  SharePoint 2010 SP2 will add Server 2012 support, but right now it is unknown if that will include Windows 8 (especially since SharePoint 2013 dropped support for installing on Windows client).

Windows Auth won't be available on a Windows 8 Basic edition.  You'll need to install Windows 8 Pro (but again, SharePoint 2010 isn't supported on Windows 8 at all).

Mac Office 2011 Corrupt .docx File (Have used "Open & repair" and tools for recovery-not worked)

I have been typing equations into a word document. Then, Microsoft Word froze and made me force quit my program. It gave me an autorecovery file, but every time I open it, Microsoft Word freezes, gives me an error message, then asks me if I want to send a report. I have tried this on multiple OSX and Microsoft computers. Furthermore, I have beent through the online guides and programs to recover the data, but I can't get a hold of it. Word is open just long enough to look at the first page, then it freezes. The problem is is that every extraction method doesn't preserve the equations which is the important content. Any way I could get the second page?

Here is a copy of the file if you want to mess around with it:

Upgrade from win 7 ultimate to Win8 Enterprise

I  understood that win 7 ultimate can not be upgraded to windows 8 enterprise.

Is there any route to follow to be able to do this?

For example,  switch windows 7 to Pro then upgrade to Win 8 Enterprise?

Thanks in advance

Hi

This will work as long as both editions are Volume Licenses.

Perhaps you meant "downgrade".

Have you run Windows 8 Enterprise in a virtual machine to become familiar with it, and to determine whether it provides everything you need?  Microsoft has a very nice 90 day evaluation version available:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx

I suggest you try it in a VM first, and judge whether you really want to do so before choosing to replace your existing OS.

Noel, are you suggesting that I stick to do win 7 ultimate to win 8 pro?

I have a small size network, I saw that some features are not available in the pro like AppLocker, Direct Access, services for network file system.

In addition, The question is : If migrating to Win 8 pro, might I lose any functionality I have in win 7 ultimate?

No, I'm not suggesting Windows 8 Pro.  My "downgrade" comment was a bit of a sarcastic remark about the features of Windows 8 Enterprise as compared to Windows 7 Ultimate.

Actually, I'm suggesting evaluating Windows 8 carefully, and maybe as a result of that evaluation you might choose NOT to change from Windows 7 Ultimate, making the upgrade path question moot.  This is the decision I've made, personally, at least for now, based on my own detailed evaluation.

What features of Windows 8 do you find compel you to upgrade?  I am aware that "keeping current" has certain if somewhat intangible benefits.  We all assume that the next version of Windows is something that we will need and want, but in this particular case it merits a closer evaluation.

Right now there are plenty of "new release blues" types of problems, from display drivers that don't quite work to features that are giving people problems (look around this forum).  I wouldn't be in a rush to change versions, especially if you need your systems for serious things.  The tried and true advice has been to "wait for service pack 1" before seriously considering upgrading business systems, and that may be quite valid right now.

Windows 8 is far superior to Windows 7 in terms of performance, stability and usefulness.  Use Windows 8 for a couple of days and Windows 7 will seem absolutely ancient and boring.

Here in the reality I'm living in Windows 8 is actually slower at many things (I have specifically benchmarked it against Windows 7), the user experience is degraded (some use Aero's visual styles to an advantage, some prefer hierchical shortcut organization), and a number of things are less stable (example:  Photoshop doesn't get what it needs from the all-too-new display drivers, I have apps with messed-up File-Open dialogs, the list goes on).

If you're finding it behaving better and more stably than Windows 7, then I'll wager you are comparing it with an old, loaded-up Windows 7 installation in which you had accumulated all too much junk.  You really should make your own objective measurements before making authoritative statements.  The only thing I've found that Windows 8 does consistently faster than Windows 7 is boot up.  Are you having to reboot your computer so much that a 30% faster bootup time (literally seconds) matters?

A fresh installation of Windows 7 (or a well-maintained old installation) runs as well as or better than Windows 8, overall.  I can say that authoritatively because I've actually done the testing.

Regarding it seeming "absolutely ancient and boring"...  Do you honestly feel that fashion figures into what makes a good operating system?

And where are the compelling "new and exciting" features?  I haven't been able to find any.  I sell a lot of books because a lot of people are having trouble making it work even as well as Windows 7 did for them.  To wit - this thread.  A user with Windows 7 Ultimate would like to get "Ultimate" funcitonality out of Windows 8...  The upgrade path to do that is...  ???

I am not advising people against having a good look at Windows 8.  Evaluate it thoroughly for yourself.  Just don't jump at the upgrade because new versions of Microsoft have always been worth having.

the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed.

Hi,I Recently Installed Windows 8 Pro I Forgot To Backup My Data. i tried to download an activator  to activate my windows

However, While i was searching for an activator i have seen that it would damage my OS by using an activator and hack it.
I Deleted any activator i downloaded, and i re-installed my windows to delete them completely

after it finished at the "Getting Ready"Point ,i thought it stopped responding i turned off the power jack from the computer
after i opened it again it says:

" the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click ok to restart the computer, and then restart installation"

And the computer doesn't load,my computer is HP Pro 3010 MT

Does anyone have a solution? Please It's veryimportant for me
my procsessor is 2.93 ghz

Thank You,
Hassan Ali

1.  You have to uninstall the HACK-avator... since you left it installed your system still sees it...

2. to fix you need to boot to any media.... go to command prompt and use rstrui.exe/offline:C:\Windows

3. *(surely you did make a restore point) which the above command will find an restore...

4. If no to making a restore point then use Official REFRESH option.  boot to media and try REPAIR...

5. If $4 fails... boot to media an CLEAN install.

WMC Key

Some are finding a bit of longish wait for thier Key

My WMC Key arrived today. I think after revamping my tower & moving to Windows 8 Pro (GA) I never got around to requesting the Key until, maybe it was Monday, ergo, it to 3 days to arrive.

The blur had suggested an ETA of 72 hrs. or 3 days... so, pretty much as advertised.

I did keep looking in Junk Mail which, is where I found it. Are y'all looking there, too?

Question about specific efs encrypted files backup on Windows server 2012

I am testing Windows server 2012 and it is not part of a domain.
I need to have some further details about how windows server backup 2012 performs specific efs encrypted files backup.
Both in TechNet and Msdn online documentation I found no technical details about how specific files and folders are backed up by windows server 2008 r2 and later server operating systems.
While in full volume backup it is clear that a block level backup of the whole volume is performed and so it is also clear that a full volume can handle without problem ef encrypted files backup (Because efs encrypted files are never opened in a block level backup), it is not so clear how, when one selects only specific efs encrypted files to backup, the selected encrypted files are backed up.
On windows server 2012 I created multiple local user accounts and, after logging in with each account, I created an efs encrypted file; Using windows server backup and selecting as the files to back up only all user accounts efs encrypted files, I was able to back up all the user account efs encrypted files
From other posts It seems clear to me that, when only specific files are selected in windows server backup, a file level backup is performed so the only way WSB could be able to backup an efs encrypted file is using the raw encryption functions (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa363783(v=vs.85).aspx), otherwise the system account or even the administrator account couldn't be able to open and copy the encrypted files of the other user accounts.
Can anyone confirm me that raw encryption functions are used by windows server backup to backup specific efs encrypted files when a file level backup is performed?
If I am wrong, may I have an explanation of how specific encrypted files are backed up when file level backup is performed by windows server 2012 backup?
Thanks a lot
Best regards

Can't change Microsoft Account mail server settings in Mail App

My server settings have changed on my Microsoft account that I use to sign in with and I am unable to change those settings in my Mail app. It takes me online line to my Microsoft account profile settings where I am still unable to change those settings. Thinking I have to switch to a local account but I want to find out first before I start changing things. How/where do I change those settings?

Hi Bizlogic

Just so I can make sure I am on the same page, your Microsoft account connects to a different mail server to collect emails?

If so you can go to outlook.com login with your details and edit your account settings which will also allow you to edit any linked accounts.

Yes that is correct and I have to change the pop & smtp servers address, which I'm unable to do on that email account within the Mail App. Within outlook.com - account settings - it logs me into my live account settings where I am only able to use a different email account or create a new one.

You should to change it by going into the following menu on outlook.com

1, Press the Cog (Settings)

2, Go to more email settings

3, Your Email Accounts

From in here you should see your Microsoft account and other accounts you have added if you click details and edit the settings.

I will add that it seems like Microsoft have updated it since I last changed the details and there seems to be an error when I click details today not sure if that is just my account however they should have it fixed soon. Because this receives emails on behalf of your other account there is no need to change any settings on your mail app within windows 8 and it will just download them from your Microsoft account.

Hopefully that all made sense

Yeah, I got there earlier today and saw an error message stating it could not connect to that account - went to details - edit and it forwarded me to a page with this error: Sorry, there seems to be a problem with Outlook right now

Yeah that's what i am getting but that is the right place. Maybe worth submitting a support ticket if it does not get fixed soon.

as far as i know there is no other way however you could add a new link and the remove the old one as it just downloads mail to your Microsoft account so you will not lose anything.

SMO DiscoverDependencies returns a tree that has infinit loop (Child and Next Sibling have the same node)

I have a product that prints SQL Server schema objects. When I migrated the product to SQL Server 2012 SMO the product kept getting Stack overflow when printing object dependencies.

The problem is that DiscoverDependencies method of scripter for table 'ActiveSubscriptions' in database ReportServer returns tree that is wrong such that the child and next sibling nodes are the same. See the screenshots that I have uploaded to my website. here is the link:
http://starprinttools.com/doc/SMO_DiscoverDependencies_Bug.pdf

Here is the link to VB.NET projects that demonstrates the bug:
http://starprinttools.com/doc/DiscoverDependenciesBug.zip

Running Instructions:

1. Edit lines 18 and 21 in the Form1.vb with your own server and database names

2. Run the program and it should stop with Stack Overflow

Can anyone please suggest a workaround this bug?

Does BizTalk 2013 support SQL 2012 SP1

Does BizTalk 2013 support SQL 2012 SP1?

The pre-reqs say SQL Server 2012, but I can't imagine SP1 would matter that much?

I will try and report on my experience, if anyone else has managed this please comment.

Nikolai,

In the past I have seen a statement that they support all service packs for the supported versions of SQL above the minimum service pack required, so from that the answer is yes.

BizTalk 2013 Beta on Azure is running on Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60
Final release will probably support SP1

Media Server

Why would the media server be slow and or not responding.  I have multiple Xbox 360's that are trying to access the media library and it times out.  A couple of times it has worked to allow me to start playing a CD and when I look for more to play it times out and can't find the media server.  Mainly music is what I am trying to play.  I have tried it from computers as well running windows 7 and 8.  The computer are spotty as well.  When it works on the computer it takes a long time to index the media folders and wonder if that has anything to do with it.  When I log on to the server and start Media Player and try to look at my media library from there it times out as well.

Windows Home Server 2011 worked great for media sharing.  But I really love the VPN and Direct Access features.  Any ides what to try would be great.

Are you on Wi-Fi or cable?

What sort of hardware is the server?

What sort of NIC?

Do you have the latest drivers?

This is a wired Connection and evga mboard with two 1GB nics.  only  using one though.  I disabled the other nic.  I tried with windows default drivers and then installed windows 7 drivers from evga, still same affect.  everything works great except accessing music from the Xbox.  Pictures and Videos Fine.  works on other windows computers fine just a little slow in the indexing process, but works. dont think it is a driver issue.  I have another conputer that i have tried to install WS2012 Ess and the same problem.

I have tried using a win7 computer on the network and adding my media files from the WS2012 ess to my computers media library and then enabled media sharing on that computer.  By doing that I was able to see the music fils just not play them.  So i went to the server and allowed the group "Everyone" Read access to my music folder.  Went back to the Xbox and now was able to see and play all music through my music library that im sharing from the win 7 computer.

When i try to go back the the Xbox and tried accessing the music from the WS2012 ess media server share it still can't see or play any music even with the permission change.

Looks like it could be a permissions issue and maybe an indexing issue with media sharing on WS2012 ess. it appeared to be hit and miss but it did work sometimes with only a couple dozen cd's in the music library.  That's why i though at first it might have been an indexing issue due to the size of the music library.

any ideas where to go from here and try?

UPDATE******

Looks like it works until I hit the 10GB mark.  Once I go over that music on the server is no longer Found.

+1.  Have not tried to get the media below 10GB yet - mine is at 19.2GB of music.

Hard wired, single nic, xbox 360's trying to access.

Has anyone solved this?

Thanks, Mark.

My new HP MICROSERVER with WS2012E is having the same problem. Can access photos and videos but not the music folder on XBOX 360 , strange , my WHS didnt have this issue using the same hardware .

I have the same issues. Funny though I had taken my android tab to London! UK and using the hotel wireless and managed to get in and get a list of the media. It would select the media and play it! Problem was it would play fornabout 30 secs and then rebuffer/timeout and then jerk its way through. Not a great way to watch a 2hr movie.

I felt good when I could get the media to list and play from far away. But there are issues under the hood here that need fixes as this is a major selling point. On my home LAN I have no issues with W7 media centre integration and it streams with no issues in that environment. But given the advertised capability, we should expect more ease of use and dependability. I had to forward all the ports manually as did almost everyone i talked to. Basically these issues were present in VAIL and have not gone away.

connection string Q

Hello there, I have created a windows form using ADO.NET inside of it to write/update/delete from a table in my SQL server.

Now my porject is working fine with no problems with I use it on my PC where I created my SQL database table, but what I want not is to install this windows form on another machine which is connected to the same network at my work, but I dont know how can I change the connection string so that the other machine could access it from my machine through our work network.

Here is my connection string right now which is working fine locally:

Dim cn As New SqlConnection cn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=.;Initial Catalog=master;Integrated Security=True"

Now to access my pc at work I have to enter a user namer and password for windows to be able to be logged in, lets say my user name is operator and pass is 123, what changes do I have to do to this code to make it work? Note that I am using Visual Studio 2010 and VB.NET, thanx in advance.

On this page you can read about all properties you can set in a connection string:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlconnection.connectionstring.aspx

I post this link rather than just giving you the answer, as having knowledge about what you can put into a connection string is essential for all data-access programming.
