power shell create/configure search service application

power shell create/configure search service application

 Hi All,

I have an environment where SQL servers are in cluster and we need to pre create DB's inorder to use them in SharePoint farm due to security restrictions.

Till now we have created SharePoint farm with pre created Databases and Configured some Service Apps

Managed Metadata Service

BCS and Web Analytics.

Now, we would like to create/configure " Enterprise Search Service Application " using pre created Databases.

we have created following databases for this task

SP_serach_service_DB

SP_search_service_propertystore_DB

SP_Search_service_crawl_DB.

Neither of the below links clarified us about how to use pre created Crawl and Peroperty Store Data Bases.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg983005.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jjameson/archive/2011/02/28/powershell-script-to-configure-search-in-sharepoint-server-2010.aspx

Both of the links using only  SP_serach_service_DB  database in their script.

Can anyone tell how can we use pre-created Crawl and Peroperty Store Data Bases while configuring through power shell?

Search and DBA created DBs is a beast. I would recommend not trying that at home, but if you have to, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262869.aspx contains the details. Effectively you will first create them in another farm, and then move to the destination, not create empty. This is a place where in my opinion MS has dropped the ball, for most part DBA created DBs is relatively OK.

Reply:

yes, I reffered that link earlier.

MS need to fix this issue with respect to Crawl Store and Property Store DB's.

I can not move a Serive App DB's from one to antoher farm. That is not a solution.

ECMAv1 support to be removed in future versions..

According to the documentation for the original ECMA (v1?)

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms698807(v=vs.100).aspx

the following statement is highlighted at the top of the page

With the release of ECMA 2.0, this feature has been depricated(sp?) and will be removed in future versions

The article says it was last updated in 2009, which obviously isn't correct..

So..

"future version" is a bit open-ended. If all of the custom ECMA's everyone has written will become unusable in the future, some more specific guidance would be helpful.

Offsites and DP's are Sec Sites

OK so question...

I have 15 offsite connected via 30 Mbps

I want to get DP's to the offsite obviously to get the software closer to the workstations. having a hard time deciding between created a secondary site at the location of the offsite are just put a DP at the location.

Thoughts?

How many clients are at these locations?

Unless there are significant number, 1,000 or more IMO, or the link is suspect, then a DP will be fine. Secondary sites provide no recourse if they fail, their clients are on an island until the secondary site is restored or replaced -- there is no failover path for clients to report to any other MP.

Proof that Microsoft went insane

Win 8 is bad enough, but if you need more proof, here it is.

Pricing for Surface revealed: Pricing

The basic RT version (WITHOUT the keyboard!) costs 500$, just as much as the iPad!
The keyboard version costs 600$.

I thought the touch cover keyboard was an essential component, and featured on all the ads and promos? I have to repeat myself: The crippled bare bones RT version, without keyboard, without the ability to run Win32 programs and with a lousy selection of apps compared to the IOS and Android costs as much as the iPad!

It is about $100 too high - and honestly should include the keyboard. Asking $600 for a 32GB (with only ~20GB free after OS load?), 10" Windows RT machine, can't join a domain, a limited version of Office, and can't run windows apps isn't that great of a deal.

Also, I don't see how you can hold this thing in your lap and type with the keyboard. The keyboard is only loosely attached to the screen. Wouldn't the screen fall backwards due to the kickstand or you'd have to carefully balance it on your knees the whole time?

Well, I have long thought that Microsoft has jumped the shark!!  However, this pricing probably represents MS's belief that these tablets will appeal to IT professionals.  Although they have the limitations that you have noted, they include, I believe, a ramp version of Office 2013 and they have the capacity of acting as "thin clients", running applications located on the servers of a given corporation.

Microsoft's position here is that it is selling a license for Windows RT, a license for Office 2013 (minus Outlook) and a "thin client" (something that would appeal to very centralized IT).    I disagree with this policy, but I am sure that this what is happening.

They are supposed to be laptop substitutes but the ergonomics here are relatively poor.

Ha, wrong! This would be something like common sense, a no go at MS currently.

Windows RT (the version these Surfaces run) can't join domains! Only the x86 Pro versions can. RT also has no support for group policies and Bitlocker. The included Office also can't run macros and add-ins.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Woah! It appears you cannot use the Office included on an RT device in a business environment!?!?!

Is this for real? If so, what a MAJOR fail. Since we can't join these machines to domains or apply GPO's properly - if an employee utilizes one, thenwould  that mean the company is immediately out of licensing compliance if one performs work on them or even reads an office document?

Microsoft expressly states that it is "not for use in commercial, nonprofit, or revenue-generating activities."

http://www.zdnet.com/businesses-cant-use-office-on-windows-rt-tablets-7000005882/

This REALLY needs to be answered. Anyone from Microsoft want to chime in on this issue?

You are totally right....I forgot about their incapacity of joining domains.  The x86 version would not be coming until some time next year.

My guess is that Microsoft would still make a play for the enterprise with these machines with their supposed capability of running Office.  I am not sure that these tablets, as configured currently are "consumer" devices.  However, who knows!!  MS may be just using them as "trial balloons".  If they sell briskly, it would be the verification of their strategy.

Defect with Printer ACLs in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012

This is to publicly announce a defect in Windows 8 Enterprise Edition and Windows Server 2012 Std/Adv Edition.

Description: ACLs are not processed properly on "Class Driver" printers when the group Everyone is removed from the printer's ACL, and all printing is blocked.

Steps to reproduce:

(1)  Install the OS fresh from MSDN ISO.

(2)  Add a printer using one of the new "Class Drivers" included with the OS, for which you have the actual printer to perform the test with an actual printout.

(3)  While logged on as an Administrator, print a test page.  Printing is successful.

(4)  Remove the group Everyone from the printer's ACL.  Administrator and Administrators are still on the ACL with full permissions.

(5)  While logged on as an Administrator, attempt to print a test page again.  Printing does not occur, with no error message.

(6)  Further, add a standard user explicitly to the printer's ACL with print permission.  Log on with that user and attempt to print to the printer.  Printing does not occur, with no error message.

Summary:  We reported this to Microsoft as a defect.  After successfully reproducing the problem, they declared this a "by design" behavior, and have not offered any workaround.  The support engineer tells us that he has put in a "design change request".  Whether the request will be acknowledged, or when, is indeterminate.  We are as yet unaware whether there may be other security problems with ACLs in these products.

Call to Action:  The support engineer suggested that we post a notification on the Forums to garner support.  If you find that this will affect the functionality of your product, or if you are simply alarmed that this has been declared a "by design" behavior, please let Microsoft engineering know.

Thanks.

backup restoration

hi to all

we are having 2003 server as a dc we did system state backup in 2003.now we want to REPLACE OUR DC with 2008, now we want recovery 2003 system state back up in 2008

here i used ntbackup utility to restore the 2003 sytem state backup but it is not, the error will appears  RESTORE OF THIS ITEM IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED

Reply:

hello,

There isn't really a good way to just switch DC computers, I suggest you take notes and start delegating roles of the 2003 server slowly, the notes help in the event something is not working properly. I have no faith in software to do this, especially if you want it done right.

Reply:

This is not supported. You can't restore a Windows 2003 system state backup on a Windows 2008.

Just install a windows server 2008R2 and promote this server to domain controller as a DC for an existing domain (your 2003 domain).
When all replication is working fine, demote the windows 2003 domain controller. This will move all existing FSMO roles from the 2003 to the 2008 server.

Cannot perform bare metal restore of Server 2008

I have made numerous attempts to do a trial restore of our Windows Server 2008 (x64) from backups of the C: volume. We are backing up to a USB drive, and I have been able to read the catalog, so it apears that the backup is good.  When I go through the restore process from the install DVD RE all seems fine until I start the actual restore at which time I get error  0x80070002 (cannot find file...etc.).  This is a Supermicro machine with a Megaraid SCSI controller.  For safety sake I pull all the drives except the one that I am going to do the trial restore on.  The logical volume for the restore target is marked as the boot drive.  The Other logical volumes are still present, but since the drives are missing the are offline.  Since this is a production machine, I am reluctant to wipe out all the existing SCSI RAID configuration information just to do a trial.  I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Reply:

hello richard,

It could be from pulling the other drives, for some reason Windows baremetal backups handle space oddly if it's empty or full it has to be the same or larger or it will error everytime, even if you are using 1% of the device. I would suggest using some third party software like Acronis and see if you get a different result, aside from that is sounds like it should work.

Need help...

Hi,

It's been more than 6 years I have been working as SQL Server developer. But the sad thing is I don't have knowledge about the internals of SQL Server. I want to learn about internals of SQL server such as DB architecuture, details about query processing, how data gets stored i.e. data pages and  index pagesn security in SQL Server etc. In short I want to get in depth knowledge of SQL server.

Can anybody suggest me good books that I can buy or any e-material available on any of the website?

Recommendations for high-volume Archiving Software

Hi all

I'm wanting to hear what ya'll use for Archive software, with champagne dreams on a beer budget!  I write TB's of imagery data per month to LTO5.

The data is coming from a Windows Server host, so only Windows software will be considered.

FYI: I currently use BackupExec (with which I have a love/hate relationship split 10/90) writing to an LTO 44 slot library as and when projects are complete that will fill one or more tapes.  For each one of these jobs I then end up with a tape set comprised of several tapes, and duplicate the set for an offsite copy.  The details of the base directories/projects, along with the tape serial #'s are entered in a simple access db.

I have not written any hooks into the BackupExec DB as I cannot be bothered trying to unravel the structure of it, and the catalogue format is unreadable anyway, without running the catalogue dump tools.

I do several restores a week, and the only place I can go to find which tape has a particular file is from BackupExec - OK backup software but not great archive software.

I won't be keeping the tapes nearline, and will load them in the library on request.

Disk-based archive systems won't be considered as it would grow by TB's each month, and the business could not sustain that kind of expenditure.

TIA

Hello airbornz,

I use the Microsoft Bare Metal backups for a few backups that live in the office, I use Backup Assist for offsite with Rsync & Exchange supported (it's great if emails are critical), and I use Acronis True image for when I need to do a backup prior to making major changes.

I personally think Microsoft backups are slow, but they work and the price is right.....if it was faster I won't use Acronis for anything although that is not the case. Backup Assist offers 1:1 backups with Rsync so you can limit the amout of bandwidth by only transferring files that have been modified also allows to make archives of all mail boxes, but this is not a disaster recovery option.

I typically keep a copy of our servers and put it on my RAID 10 server at home just to ensure we will have it in the event of total destruction by Godzilla at our office.

A Bottleneck!

Hi,i am experiencing a problem with the installation of the Ms Server 2008 software in a multiboot environment.i have to mention that i have divided my hard disk into four partitions and i had previously installed windows Xp on the Drive C:\.before installing the Server i had to convert the file sysytem on drive c:\ to ntfs and then installed the server.the problem is that the server have overwritten the startup menu and it doesnot work just as windows 7 or Xp and the operating systems are not available there.i tried to overcome the problem by editing it through the start up and recovery page in system item of control panel but the feature is not proveided by the OS .then i had to uninstall the Server in order to have my start up menu reset.now, i am planning to reinstall the server on Drive F: and i have formatted the drive to NTFS but before going on i would like to know what measures i should take to avoid the same problem as the first time? thanks Ray

I'd recommend using HyperV to deploy multiple OS on the same machine.

As a side note Windows 7 typically writes to all attached drives (if you select it or not), and this can cause all types of fun issues later.

If you don't like / know Hyper V I would suggest something like "Total Commander" to manage boot records and disconnect all drives while installing each OS at a time.

I hope this helps, good luck!

Windows 7 control panel applets display as folders...

Okay, this question and its description are twofold.

Windows 7 ultimate recently started hiding all kinds of files and folders in Windows Explorer. For example, I  open up Explorer and browse to the C: drive, and only see folders. It didn't happen with every location that's browsable, just most frequently accessed areas of my computer, such as my external drives.

Here's the second part, the most prioritized question.....

I recently installed(let me restate that, started using a stand-alone version of) Explorer++, because of the aforementioned disappearing-files/folders issue, and.....

since that time, control panel applets have not been opening correctly. They open as folders/categories. So when i browse to a specific item, such as Appearance and Personalization--->Display, I get an empty folder. This is troubling, as I cannot add-remove programs or hardware, using native Windows-7 code. I have no viruses or malware, this isn't a malicious code problem.

I think Explorer++ reassigned itself as the "real" windows 7 Shell, and somehow managed to replace control panel "special folders" as regular folders. Any help?

Thank you.

According to your description, I suggest to perform a system restore to see if the same issue occurs.

Also logon with Clean Boot or Safe Mode for test.

If the issue persists, try to use in-place upgrade to fix the issue:

You can try to use SFC /Scannow to check system files:

If the issue persists, I'm afraid you need to use Windows 7 installation disc to repair system.

Dynamic Memory support: Finally coming to Linux

Finally:

After the Hyper-V drivers have left staging with 3.4 and seen a couple of stability fixes since then also, K.Y. has proposed the first set of patches for Hyper-V dynamic memory support on LKML. I guess this feature will take some time to make into a stable kernel.org-Release but now is the first time I was able to see code for this feature in public.

See: http://www.spinics.net/lists/kernel/msg1416396.html

Be warned: These are possibly very experimental patches, so definitely not recommended for production!

Not able to boot with multiple HD connected

  • WINSERVER2012 RC 8400
  • Abit IP35PRO XE with Intel Core2 Quad Q9450

OS boots, reboots, and runs great when only the OS drive is connected [OCZ Agility3 SSD].  Drive is connected to SATA port on motherboard.

When an 8-port SATA expansion card is connected to the PCI1 slot, OS can boot, install driver, reboot, and run with no problems.  The card is a Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8.  However, when I connect a HD to the card, Windows will not boot up.  The machine will POST, during which I see the card display the connected HD, and then the new Windows Logo appears but without the circling dots.  Furthermore, the keyboard is locked - Ctrl+ Alt+Del does nothing, and the NumLock/CapsLock lights on the keyboard are stuck in whatever position they were prior to being locked.

This has been very frustrating! I've spent at least a hundred hours on this problem, trying to understand what is causing it and how to fix it.  One terribly confusing thing about all this is that on one bootup attempt when I thought the keyboard was going to get locked, I started banging on the keyboard in frustration.  THE NEXT THING I KNOW, THERE ARE SOME ODD SYMBOLS ON THE SCREEN, apparently in response to my banging of the keyboard - it was too fast to take a picture of, but I clearly remember seeing a Spade symbol (as in a deck of playing cards) and the last symbol was that of a happy face - not an emoticon as in :) but a full circle with two horizontal eyes inside complete with a smile.  THEN THE MACHINE BOOTED UP!

There seems to be some fundamental user-interaction changes in the new OS - for example, a BSOD now shows a sad-face emoticon and a much calmer shutdown message.  Was my late-night keyboard banging experience an example of some new intuitive user-interaction?  Or was it some keystroke combination that I just happened to luck out and press as I was banging the keyboard???

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

when I connect a HD to the card
>> Did you connect the OCZ Agility3 SSD or another HDD to the 8-port SATA expansion card?

------------------------------------
Reply:

Hello Mr. Hu:

I apologize for the ambiguity of my previous post.  What I meant to state is that the OCZ Agility3 SSD was connected directly to the motherboard at all times.
I tried different ports of the motherboard but I never connected the main OS drive to anything other than the motherboard.
With this in mind:

**Without the 8-port SATA expansion card connected, I am able to load OS
**With the 8-port SATA expansion card connected but no additional drives (SSD or HD) attached to the 8-port SATA expansion card, I am able to load OS
**With 8-port SATA expansion card connected and either an SSD or HD attached to the 8-port SATA expansion card, I cannot load OS

I've checked and rechecked bios settings and boot order settings.
Once I attach a drive to the 8-port expansion card, maintain the connection between the SATA SSD OCZ Agility and the motherboard (via SATA port), and then attempt to load OS, the likelihood that the OS will fail to load is 9 out of 10.  One frustrating thing is that 1 out of 10 times the OS is actually able to load, and I am able to access the data on the additional attached drive (non OS drive).  I can even assign the drive to a storage pool.  However, once the machine encounters a reboot, I experience the 'freeze on reboot' problem.  I've tested over 10 different SATA hard drives, from different manufactures, all purchased in the last five years.

Something I forgot to mention before:

Once the OS fails to load, even if I completely disconnect the 8-port SATA expansion card (with or without attached drives) it is almost always required that I disconnect power supply and reset cmos.
If I fail to disconnect power supply and reset cmos, most of the times even if I select the dvd drive as the first boot device and try to boot to the OS installation disk, I am unable to do so.  I encounter the 'freeze on reboot' problem.
This applies to:

**When only the OS drive (SATA SSD) & SATA DVD drive are connected to motherboard
**When the above conditions exist AND the 8-port SATA expansion card is connected but no drives are attached
**When both aforementioned conditions exist AND there is a drive attached to the 8-port SATA expansion card

One last confusing thing to add:

I've completely removed the Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 8-port SATA expansion card from the system, and replaced it with an older High Point RocketRaid 182 8-port SATA expansion card, and I've attached 8 SATA drives to the card.  The OS loads, reboots, & power-off/power-on with no problems.  Here comes the confusing part:

The High Point RocketRaid 182, or perhaps its driver (By HighPoint, version 1.1.9.801, published 8/1/2006) was NOT compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2.  However, the same HighPoint driver functions with no noticeable problems in Windows Server 2012 RC.

The Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 worked well with Windows Server 2008 R2, but seems not to work with Windows Server 2012.  The driver for the Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 is referred to as the Marvell Hercules 2 SATA Controller, and I think its published by Adaptec but can be found on Supermicro's archived drivers ftp site.

Using Build 9200 I have not encountered this problem.  This thread can be closed :)

ADFS and Kerberos

Hi

We are planning to use ADFS  as we have two AD Servers ( one for internal and one for external users ). If we use ADFS then do we need to enable kerberos or not ? Right now we are using NTLM for SP 2010 . thanks

Reply:

Adding ADFS to the topology does not require you to have Kerberos. It can work with integrated NTLM authentication.
