How to ask a question efficiently in TechNet forum

Thank you for posting in TechNet forum. The online problem solving can be relatively time consuming because it may demand several messages back and force to fully understand the symptom and background, especially at the very beginning. Here are a few suggestions that help you get the best answer to your question as quickly as possible.

When You Ask

1. Selecting a good title which summarizes the specific problem you have. It will be the one of the main driving forces for others to want to actually read your item. Choosing a badly-formatted title will drive people away, thinking that since the title is so badly written, so must be the information and the question within the thread.

2. Provide all the necessary information in your initial post. The following information would be very helpful:

- Symptom description: Detailed description of the problem. If you receive any error messages, please let us know the exact error WORD BY WORD.

- Environment: The system environment, such as your OS/application version, your network topology, and your domain environment, etc.

- Any recent relevant configuration change(s): If the issue started to occur after installing any application/updates or changing the configuration, please let us know.

- Any additional information. Tell what you have done prior to asking your question. This will help us understand that you've done so far.

3. Write in a clear language. Avoiding spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. Don't type IN ALL CAPS, which in most cases is read as shouting and considered rude.

4. Keep with the same thread. Do not refer to a post you made last year, and above all, Please come back. There are hundreds and thousands of posts where we have seen people given great and wonderfully long answers yet no reply from the original poster.

5. Be courteous to reply, even if it's to say. "I've given up" or thanks that worked. (This helps the whole community when you do this, and makes the people who donate time, warm and fuzzies.)

When answered

Give Positive Feedback. Once you've received a correct answer to your question, either from a Microsoft employee, an MVP, or the community in general, pleases replies that the issue or question has been answered. And if possible mark the solution as answered: This step is important, since it lets other people benefit from your posts.

Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help.

I would add, for the PowerPivot forum, that if you can provide a sample workbook that contains the data you are working on, life will be much easier. If on the same workbook, you provide the desired results, the solution can be easily tested.

Normally, I spend 80% of the time to prepare a repro with some data and 20% to write a formula, by providing me the workbook you are saving me 80% of time, which means it is more likely to get an answer. :)

Given the error message and the fact that the database engine is saying HFDWDSQL01\SHAREPOINT sounds like you have SQL Express installed (most likely in a stand-alone SharePoint installation). You cannot have reporting services with SQL express edition.

May be cause from a remote execution flaw in the system I believe I was hacked because I cannot reproduce this error allow attack had problem with windows 8 file naming system it would not let me create a file name with space left blank between the words and numbers.

When you try to create a fixed, 500 GB VHD, it is going to take a long, long time. To create that sized VHD requires that the space be allocated and zeros written to every single sector. Of course the file will be 'created' when you look in the directory because that is the file that is being written to.

I Know that what happing is I quit the disk manager and stop the creation and it still create the file there on cancel button while that happening i'm getting a lot of slow system and I 'm not sure some one is not trying to grab the VHD file ???

No offense here but it seems, judging from your posting history, that every
time you hit a snag with Windows 8 you identify it as a bug or that you've
somehow been hacked and so far, from what I've seen, you haven't been
hacked, nor have you identified any bugs.

My suggestion is that you drop the "bug notifications" and the "something
isn't working the way I expect it to, therefore I've obviously been hacked"
from your posts and simply describe the problems you're experiencing in
clear terms with a bit more detail so that someone here can possibly help
to resolve whatever issues you're running into.

No mas. That utility is only helpful for healthy logs. When I attempted to run it against the corrupt log file it simply stated:

SecEvent.Evt:
Could not open SecEvent.Evt event log on <hostname>:
The event log file is corrupted.

Authorization in SharePoint 2010 site

We have a windows authenticated SharePoint 2010 web application very well integrated with AD. In our organization, there is an HR data base, all users who are in this get sync to AD too. But there are few users who are directly created in AD but not there in HR DB. Now when such users try to access SharePoint application i should restrict them from logging as they are not in HR DB and hence they are not authorized to access this site. What are the best options to implement this? I had a following thought...

Get the users list from both AD and HR DB and have a list who are there in AD but not in HR DB(as of now this will be manual, will try to do as a job)
Create a group in AD and add these users to that group
While importing users to SharePoint, we can restrict users who are part of these group should not be pulled in SharePoint
By doing this when the user tries to access any SharePoint url he'll keep entering his credentials but will not be able to login to our application

Let me know if there are any better options. Guide me to implement this.

First, Profile import from AD has nothing to do with whether you can login or not. If a user is in AD and is given access to SharePoint then they will be able to login whether they have a profile or not. So your 3 and 4 bullets don't work.

I would say that your best approach would be the second bullet. Create a group in AD that has all the users in it who aren't in the HR DB. The add that group to the Web Application User Policies with a Deny All Policy Permission level. Even if the user is then granted permission elsewhere in SharePoint they will be refused access to that Web Application. If you do that for each Web App you can prevent those people from logging in. Thanks a lot for your inputs. Before i go ahead and implement the second bullet, is there any other way to do this. Like run a job which will fire an event on logging to the web application. That event will identify if the user is there in HR DB or not, if so then redirect to a separate page which is out of application. Is it doable and a good approach?

You could do that using an HTTP handler yes, but its not a good approach. It uses up too much performance on the web front ends because there is no way to limit it to firing on only logins. You would have to have it fire on every request but only do something if the destination is the login page. Its possible, but would be a lot of work and isn't really a good design.

Also please do ask a question. What is the problem you have with this code ? As far as I can see it returns a single image because you have a unique image per id.

IMO, you could use a query string value rather than a textbox value so that you can use the same page multiple times from wihtin another page to get a different image on each call. See :

Finally try http://forums.asp.net/ to get answers from ASP.NET users rather than general C# users (where we expect question that are related to the C# language usage, here it just happens that you use C# but it has nothing to do with a language issue, this is related with how to serve database images from a web site).

I am writing code in TimerJob so I dont have any control to take the input. I have a list with 4 columns.

Now I want, when the TimerJob runs then multiple items (3 rows items) should save in all 4 respective columns.

Ex:- I want to save 3 rows at a time in 4 respctive column:-

All 3 rows should save in respective columns at a time when TimerJob runs.

Hello,

Please check once SharePoint diagnostic logs, what they says. Please share exception from there.

Also, you could modify web.config file, set the CallStack=True and CustomError = Off, and refresh the page again it will show detailed stack trace on the page. Share those details.

Thess log will help to find out the exact cause and solution.

At library level i have configure incoming email and used email address like testemail@FQDN.com

When i send email getting Delivery Failure Report

Pls tell what could be an issue and how to fix it.

I am assuming you are receiving the delivery failure report from your email server. Can you check with your email server administrator as to whether the mail server is able to relay emails sent to @FQDN of the web server?

why are 2 AD mgmt agents needed to sync FIM and AD?

Hi everyone...

Following instruction to provision into AD (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff686263(v=WS.10).aspx)

It states to create a management agent for AD entering these attributes for provisioned users:

ADMA (provision to AD from FIM)
•displayName
•givenName
•sn
•sAMAccountName
•unicodePwd
•userAccountControl

I was able to provision into AD following the guide. Then I'm trying to show that changes can be made to AD, and those users would be reflected in FIM following (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff686264(v=ws.10).aspx).

Instructions state to create a new agent with users defined with the following attributes:

ADMA (sync AD changes to FIM)
•displayName
•givenName
•objectSid
•sAMAccountName
•sn

So, while i have not yet tested this, and suspect the instructions will work I have a few questions for this kind community:

1.) Why do I need two different sets of attributes to describe the same user?

2.) Am I missing something or does it seem like a trememdous amount of work in terms of creating potentially FOUR management agents just to be able to sync between FIM and AD?

3.) Is there a way to automate running the rules instead of needed to select each sync rule individually and running it, then waiting for completion to run the next?

Just to be clear - my main question here is shouldn't I be able to keep FIM and AD in sync with just one set of management agents? Perhaps just by creating an outbound and inbound sync rule for them to process? Perhaps the two instruction pages (Provision to AD & Sync AD with FIM) are meant to be read individually, not in supplement to each other as I may be treating them??

They are indeed meant to be individual to each other and not read like that.

They compliment each other, but not supplement each other, if that makes sense.

You indeed only need one management agent unless you are syncing some other strange object into FIM like Bitlocker keys.

Sorry, not following your point here. If I set up 2 management agents, one for FIM and one for AD, shouldn't I be able to sync both ways: from AD to FIM and FIM to AD? According to the the documentation I've highlighted they are calling for four agents to sync both ways. That seems like overkill.

Management Agents typically operate in 2 different modes. One is Import and the other is Export. When your import data your pulling it in from the target (AD in this instance) and then into the Metaverse (depending on your join rules). That data can then be carried over to other management agents FIM for example to flow / provision / deprovision base off your logic.

Think of your Management agents as a data source. You will sometimes want to import data to flow elsewhere (FIM portal for instance) and push data out that may have been brought in from elsewhere. For every user store you want to integrate into FIM, you typically have 1 management agent to pull and push data.

[BUG] Wsus install on server 2012 with unc path as storage directory

Hi,

I installed server 2012 from our TechNet account and installed it to test wsus functionality.
In the installation process of wsus you can set a unc path to store the updates.

The installation of wsus also makes the iis virtual directorys if you have \\name\path\folder\ then it will remove \\ before the unc path in iis content virtual directory and your wsus will be broken.

I have no early installation of wsus on this machine and if i reinstall server 2012 and install wsus I get the same result.
The solution to this problem is to add \\ to the properties of Content virtual directory.

I hope this is gonna be fixt by Microsoft and all other people can find this fix fast.

FTP windows explorer drag and drop not working

For some reason all of a sudden we cannot, using Windows Explorer, drag and drop files on the server side of the ftp site.

Better explanation:

I've used Windows Explorer on both Windows 7 and Windows XP to transfer files via ftp. The ftp server is Windows Server 2000 i think it is iis5 but could be earlier edition.

In the past i have been able to ftp into my server, create a folder, add some files and drag the files and folders around to my hearts content using the anonymous user account. Drop them here, paste them there or delete them, basically full permissions... (yeah, i know security concern) not really relevant to the question though.

Any way, all of a sudden, I can no longer move files around server side through the client Windows Explorer session. I can drag them to and from the server i can delete them, create folders, and pretty much anything else that i want to do.

HOWEVER, i Cannot drag and drop files around on the server using Windows Explorer. I CAN however drag and drop files around on the server using FileZilla FTP Client edition.

This is the same behavior in Windows XP and in Windows 7.

Any ideas?

Based on the current information, it seems that some settings of your FTP Server were changed. However, as the issue is related FTP Server, it is recommended to address the issue in IIS Forums.
