Remap/Align users on secondary high availability database

Remap/Align users on secondary high availability database

The users are mapped before I add database into HA group on primary server but on secondary servers they are not aligned/mapped yet and I can identify them on secondary servers by running queries

After adding database the remapping does not work  on secondary servers as the databases changes to read only and HA mode

How can I achieve the task on secondary servers when the database is into HA and the users are not mapped?

Windows or Sql logins?

Seems like you could create the logins and prepare a script for mapping them when HA/DR is needed.

So, is the question how to remap sql logins?  If so, the answer is sp_change_users_login

If the question is how to do this when the db is in read_only mode, the answer might be just script it and use that script when the db is live.

Even when the database is live there is database mirroring error

as the database is part of HA group

Can you qualify that last post, Muhammad? What did you execute? Where did you execute it? What exact error messages did you get?

I suggest you look into contained databases, and change your login/users to users with passwords (there's a migration proc for that). This means that there's no re-mapping necessary.

Remote Desktop for Mac 8.0.8 (build 25010) with 100% CPU usage

When running Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac version 8.0.8 and connecting to a Windows 2003 Desktop puts my Macbook to 100% CPU usage. I think this didn't happend with older versions.

Is it possible to fix the problem or should we rollback to an older version?

Thank you.

I'm seeing this as well. It's really creating a lot of issues for our users. They are on Mac OS 10.9.4 and this wasn't happening until the most recent update (8.0.8). If you have a Time Machine backup prior to the update, you can restore the application to the previous version.

Thanks Trieu1 for your solution.

Using a Time Machine backup from prior to 8.0.8 worked perfectly and I was able to access MRD V 8.0.7 build 24875, install it after uninstalling 8.0.8, and the fan no longer runs unsustainably at high as it was in 8.0.8.

Best option in lieu of a fix for the latest release.

I have also noticed that, when logging out from a desktop, the RDP window does not close - it stays open forever on the Mac desktop displaying the message "Saving your settings" of the Windows logoff procedure. I know that I have been completely disconnected from the Windows system (because I am not seeing myself connected when viewing the Users pane in the Task Manager utility) - however, the RDC window stays open on the Mac (I have to explicitly close it using the "x" button in its upper left corner).

Are you sure MS RDP client is the cause (verified with Activity Monitor, or some other tool such as iStat Menus) ?  We are a small office of six people, all with 15" MBPs from mid-2014, OSX 10.10.3, and RDP client 8.0.18.  We're RDPing into Windows boxes all day every day, and don't have this problem (was fixed long ago, last summer).

------------------------------------
Reply:

Thanks Jim for responding so quick!  Yes absolutely, I'm always using Activity Monitor.  I also have a late 2013 MBP that I keep on an up-to-date Mavericks on and use the most with RDP which I connect to my office server (2008 SBS R2) several hours per day.  Often times I'll be travelling around and at coffee shops, restaurants, libraries, etc for 3-4 hour durations while I'm connected to RDP.  And while I'm out for those long periods and on battery, I shut down everything I can reasonably on the OS including some unneeded background tasks.  I'll use a few web browsing windows, maybe MS Word and or Outlook sometimes AND try to use RDP.  Without using RDP I get 6-8 hours of run-time and it runs very cool.  With RDP malfunctioning, it would be about 50-90 mins.

-I constantly quit MS RDP once I discover it's putting the CPU into overdrive.  Sometimes when I relaunch it, it's perfect for awhile.  Other times it will not change and go right back to extremely high CPU.

-I know my late 2013 MBP very well, I also use some very high demanding applications live for doing sound for 1.5 years, 3-4 nights a week. These applications are Pro Tools 10 with about 100 plugins (about 50% CPU is used by this alone, running very low latency, 32 samples), Virtual DJ, Universal Audio Software - these all run in realtime mode and collectively use about 70% of the CPU plus some spikes up to 90%, I also have many Safari Browser windows open.  The computer and CPU will run quite hot expectedly as they are being pushed near the max for real-time audio applications. However because I'm careful about shutting down all the background apps before these realtime performances, it runs flawlessly which is very impressive. Of course during these live performances the MBP 2013 is plugged in.

-The only thing I wouldn't dare touch is MS RDP during these performances.  It would kill the system as soon as it malfunctioned.  I had an older Core 2 Quad 775 socket live windows based rack computer system that I used to run at 80% usage and I could easily run RDP all time even with my apps, it would never hit the CPU at all it seemed.

-My MBP 2014 doesn't get as much use.  I use it around the house but it has the exact same issues when connecting to RDP.  I sometimes wonder if it has anything to do the 2008 SBS R2 I'm connecting to.  Or maybe when I'm running on that server.  It's setup with user login accounts just to use MS Office programs and that's it really. And where it's simply sending screen updates, I don't think it would matter what the computer I'm connecting to is running.

-Just yesterday I noticed I was using RDP for quite awhile and my late MBP 2013 didn't heat up BUT it was plugged in during that hour or so.  I will investigate this more.  BTW I'm so glad you fixed the Canadian keyboard issue, that was a test of sanity!

-I would be happy to send you you and screen shots, submit system reports from my MBP 2013 and my SBS 2008 R2, etc to help you with this.  Also it would be nice if RDP auto reconnected within 5 minutes or so after the Mac OS goes to sleep.   Thanks!

How to change Sites Controller configuration?

I have installed and configured Katal in distrubuted deployment. Now I'd like to change config to point to other file server for Web Site data. How can I do that? Configuration wizard on Sites Controller https://localhost:30101/ just says "All features are configured."

Thanks!

Hi Egilsk,

I did not test this but it looks like you may be able to do so by adding a new FileServer and removing the old one usign the PS commands:

New-FileServer [-FileServerName] <String> [-ConnectionString <String>] [-SkipValidation [<SwitchParameter>]]
[<CommonParameters>]

Remove-FileServer [-FileServerName] <String> [-ConnectionString <String>] [<CommonParameters>]

It would be a good idea if you backup the hosting DB before you proceed.

Please let us know if this works.

Thanks, found the cmdlets in the snapin. Another problem is that after performing Remove-FileServer and New-FileServer, configuration still points at old file shares for websites and certificates on the old fileserver. Can see this with Get-HostingConfiguration. How to properly update configuration to reflect new file server? This includes share names, usernames and passwords for File Share Owner, User, and Certificate Share User.

Other than poor get-help, there doesnt seem to be any documentation available on the WebHostingSnapin cmdlets at this point.

Hi Egilsk,

I researched this further and it does not seem to be an easy way to change the FileServer role once configured.

But a colleague of mine tried the below steps and it seemed they worked for him. you may want to give it a try.

1.       Keep the existing file server untouched until everything is created on the new server
2.       Use the PS command to create a new file server   "New-FileServer"
3.       Copy the exact folder structure to the new file server
4.       Make sure the ICLs on the folder is the same as the existing file server
5.       Recreate quotas on all site folders (refer to the existing file server)
6.       Update the Hosting database runtime.Sites RootDirectory field
7.       Now, the old file server can be removed   "Remove-FileServer"

Excel Pivot Table with Date Hierarchies - query performance degradation

For the sake of this explanation, I'm going to try and keep it simple. Slicing the data by additional dimensions only makes the issue worse. I'll keep this description to one fact table and three dimensions. Also, I'm fairly new to SSAS Tabular; I've worked with SSAS Multidimensional in the past.

We've got a fact table that keeps track of bill pay payments made over time. Currently, we only have about six months of data, with the fact row count at just under 900,000 rows. The grain is daily.

There is an Account dimension (approx. 460,000 rows), with details about the individual making a payment.

There is a Payment Category dimension (approx.. 35,000 rows), which essentially groups various Payees into groups which we like to report on: Automobile Loan, Mortgage, Insurance, etc.

There is the requisite Date dimension  (exactly 62093 rows-more days than we need?), which allows visibility as to what is being paid when.

Using this DW model, I've created a SSAS BISM Tabular model, from which Excel 2010 is ultimately used to perform some analysis, using Pivot Tables. In the tabular model, for easier navigation (doing what I've always done in SSAS MultiDimensional), I've created several Date Hierarchies, Year-Month, Year-Quarter-Month, etc.

There are currently only two measures defined in the Tabular model: one for the "Sum of PaymentAmount"; one for the "PaymentsProcessed".

OK, in Excel 2010, using a Pivot Table, drag the "Sum of PaymentAmount" measure to the Values section, next to/under the PivotTable Field List. Not too exciting, just the grand total of all Payments, for all time.

Drag the "YearMonth" hierarchy (from the Date dimension) to the "Column Labels" section. After expanding the year hierarchy to see the months, now the totals are for each of the months, for which we have data, for June through November, 2013.

Drag the "PaymentCategory" (from the Payment Categories dimension) to the "Report Filter" section. Filter accordingly: We just want to see the monthly totals for "Automobile Loans".

Now, some details. Drag the "AccountSK" (hiding the actual account numbers) to the "Row Labels" section. This shows all accounts that have made Automobile Loan payments over the last six months, showing the actual payment amounts.

So far, so good. Remember, I'm using a Date Hierarchy here, in this case "YearMonth"

Now, if any of the other attributes on the Account dimension table, say "CreditScore", or "LongName", are subsequently dragged over to the "Row Lables" section, under the "AccountSK", the results will never come back, before timing out or by giving up and pressing ESCape!

If this exact scenario is done by removing the Date Hierarchy, "YearMonth" from the "Column Labels" and replace it with "Year" and "MonthName" attributes from the Date dimension, these fields not being in any sort of hierarchy, adding an additional "Account" attribute does not cause any substantial delay.

What I'm trying to find out is why is this happening? Is there anything I can do as a work around, other than what I've done by not using a Date Hierarchy? Is this a known issue with DAX and the query conversion to MDX? Something else?

I've done a SQL Profiler trace, but I'm not sure at this point what it all means. In the MDX query there is a CrossJoin involved. There are also numerous VertiPaq Scans which seems to be going through each and every AccountSK in the Account dimension, not just the ones filtered, to get an additional attribute (About 3,600 accounts which are "Automobile Loan" payments.).

Any thoughts?

Thanks! Happy Holidays!

I'm interested to investigate more.

Can you provide the MDX query generated in the two scenarios? The one that never returns (using YearMonth hierarchy) and the one that works well (without using the YearMonth hierarchy)?

Thanks,

Marco

Thanks for your reply Marco. I've been reading your book, too, getting into Tabular.

I've set up the Excel Pivot Table using either the Year/MonthName levels, or the YearMonth hierarchy and then adding the additional attribute for the CreditScore.

Incidentally, when using the YearMonth hierarchy and adding the CreditScore, all is well, if the Year has not been "opened". When this is done, I suspect the same thing is going on.

From SQL Profiler, each of the individual MDX queries below (formatted a bit for readability).

If you would be able to create a repro workbook (scrambling original data) so that the problem can be easily reproduced, it would be nice.

I think this is a problem I already observed in Tabular, but having a repro on a smaller PowerPivot workbook would be much better for opening an incident with MS (and pushing for a solution on other channels, including Connect).

I haven't had time to get the Excel worksheet together, but I did come across a solution/work around to this problem. It's actually from one of your co-authors of the SSAS "Tabular" book. It was also almost a year ago.

Please see: Natual and Unnatural Hierarchies:

http://cwebbbi.wordpress.com/2012/02/28/natural-and-unnatural-hierarchies-in-the-ssas-2012-tabular-model/

It all makes sense to me, as creating Hierarchies in SSAS MultiDimensional (MD), as well as appropriate Attribute Relationships and KeyColumns, was much more "visible" and interactive. I was curious as to how this could be done in Tabular. It isn't per se and requires a different approach.

Did you happen to run across anything new on this?

I'm having the exact same problem in an Employee model that has 30K employee rows, with a HiredDate calendar hierarchy.

If I add the calendar Hierarchy, filter to a year and expand to Month and Day:

Adding 1 measure SumEmployeeCount (each employee record has a counttally=1) and 1 value column like EmployeeID it works great.

As soon as I add a second such as EmployeeName (from same Employee table) it then slows down processing and takes several minutes vs. 1 or 2 seconds.

So:

Calendar Hierarchy Year->Month->Day

with SumEmployeeCount and Employee ID value label is fast, adding a second value column from same table like EmployeeName makes it takes minutes.

For example:

the slower query:

--------

SELECT

NONEMPTYCrossJoin(Hierarchize(DrilldownMember({{DrilldownMember({{DrilldownLevel({[ORIG_HIRE_DT_CALENDAR].[Hierarchy1].[All]},,,INCLUDE_CALC_MEMBERS)}}, {[ORIG_HIRE_DT_CALENDAR].[Hierarchy1].[Calendar_Year].&[1900]},,,INCLUDE_CALC_MEMBERS)}}, {[ORIG_HIRE_DT_CALENDAR].[Hierarchy1].[Calendar_Year].&[1900].&[January]},,,INCLUDE_CALC_MEMBERS)), Hierarchize(DrilldownMember(CrossJoin({[EMPLOYEE].[EMPL_ID].[All],[EMPLOYEE].[EMPL_ID].[EMPL_ID].AllMembers}, {([EMPLOYEE].[LAST_NAME].[All])}), [EMPLOYEE].[EMPL_ID].[EMPL_ID].AllMembers, [EMPLOYEE].[LAST_NAME]))) DIMENSIONPROPERTIESPARENT_UNIQUE_NAME,HIERARCHY_UNIQUE_NAMEONCOLUMNS  FROM(SELECT({[ORIG_HIRE_DT_CALENDAR].[Hierarchy1].[Calendar_Year].&[1900]}) ONCOLUMNS  FROM[Model]) WHERE([Measures].[Sum of EMPLOYEE_COUNT_TALLY]) CELLPROPERTIESVALUE, FORMAT_STRING, LANGUAGE, BACK_COLOR, FORE_COLOR, FONT_FLAGS

-----------

The faster query:

------

SELECT

NONEMPTYCrossJoin(Hierarchize(DrilldownMember({{DrilldownMember({{DrilldownLevel({[ORIG_HIRE_DT_CALENDAR].[Hierarchy1].[All]},,,INCLUDE_CALC_MEMBERS)}}, {[ORIG_HIRE_DT_CALENDAR].[Hierarchy1].[Calendar_Year].&[1900]},,,INCLUDE_CALC_MEMBERS)}}, {[ORIG_HIRE_DT_CALENDAR].[Hierarchy1].[Calendar_Year].&[1900].&[January]},,,INCLUDE_CALC_MEMBERS)), Hierarchize({DrilldownLevel({[EMPLOYEE].[EMPL_ID].[All]},,,INCLUDE_CALC_MEMBERS)})) DIMENSIONPROPERTIESPARENT_UNIQUE_NAME,HIERARCHY_UNIQUE_NAMEONCOLUMNS  FROM(SELECT({[ORIG_HIRE_DT_CALENDAR].[Hierarchy1].[Calendar_Year].&[1900]}) ONCOLUMNS  FROM[Model]) WHERE([Measures].[Sum of EMPLOYEE_COUNT_TALLY]) CELLPROPERTIESVALUE, FORMAT_STRING, LANGUAGE, BACK_COLOR, FORE_COLOR, FONT_FLAGS

Subject line

Good morning.

Am trying to add an increasing formular into my subject line on MS Outlook 2010.

I would ike it to be in date for YYYYMMDD- (20150427-)

How would i go about doing this and what formula would i need to use?

Reply:

It would be easier to use a macro to edit and update the subject line, but there is a convoluted method you could use in a custom form, or you could use vbscript in a custom form. Because you can't set the form as the default, a macro would be better. do you want every message to have this subject line or just some?

Thanks fo the reply.

I would like every new message to default with this subject line.

At the very basic level, this macro will create a new message and add the date + a number. The number is saved in memory and goes up as long as outlook is open.  it'll start back at 1 if you close outlook.

Dim i As Long

Public Sub CreateNewMessage()
Dim objMsg As MailItem
i = i + 1
Set objMsg = Application.CreateItem(olMailItem)

 With objMsg
  .Subject = Format(Date, "yyyymmdd") & "-" & i
  .Display
End With

Set objMsg = Nothing
End Sub

how to build sdk query

I already have figured out how to get ChangeRequests and Incidents using the SDK.  I also figured out how to get related items such as CreatedbyUser or AssignedToUser using the SDK.

The problem is that I have to make multiple calls to SCSM to get all the info I need.  Is there a way to build a "query" that returns the incidents or change request data AND the related data in one call?

Thanks.

it depends on what you mean. if you're looking to get multiple related items, like the Service Request and all of it's activities, then you should look to TypeProjections, which allow you to get a single object or collection of objects that represent a collection of related objects. this is how the default Views show you data about the related users and config items, and how the default forms work.

if you're looking for an arbitrary SQL-like syntax which allows you to pull data from the active database, consider using SQL or SSRS against the reporting DataWarehouse. the active ServiceManager is something like a 5th or 6th normalized object oriented mess, and even reading from it directly with SQL is discouraged. the DataWarehouse schema is fairly flat and the default reports do a good job of exposing the method and madness.

Installing Office not Drivers on SQL Server using windows 2008

I am trying to find the Best practice reference that suggests not to install the full Office application on a Windows Server\SQL Server but to only install the drivers. By default from learning this somewhere over my career I have always assumed this was the best practice.  now I am in a new environment and I need to explain why I do not want office installed, only the drivers and I can not remember or find a reference on the topic.

Maybe it has changed, maybe it never was but I have been "googling" all morning with no answer

Thanks in Advance

Hello - There is no real need for installing full Microsoft Office suite on SQL Server because you are not going to use them at all, believe in what is not required should not be installed on the server especially. This way you also reduce attack surface

Indeed, you may want to develop applications that pushes MS-Access data or CSV data into SQL Server and therefore we need drivers such as Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 for working with Access database files and we would get it from MS sites

Hi

There are lot of parameters needs to consider not only the number of users. SharePoint provides lot of services, depend upon the usage of services, the number of servers might go high and low. this requires a detailed study of what you need on the SharePoint Services. Below two URLS will be good starting point for you.

POS Ready 7 eval, installs but UI broken.

Do you have to install the language pack ISO as well as the OS ISO?

As it is the UI is broken, missing text, explorer fails to run, and so on.    The instructions don't say to install the language pack iso

[Case Sharing] Outlook proxy setting could not be saved

[Symptom]

===========
Outlook clients in the internal domain can connect with CAS server properly - they can auto-configure the profile with no problem.

External outlook anywhere can be manually configured with proxy settings – Eg: mail.domain.com with NTLM authentication, but when external clients automatically configure the profile or every time we restart the Outlook client, the settings are automatically changed to internalservername.domain.com with Basic authentication.

[Analysis]

========
When outlook connect to Exchange by using Outlook Anywhere, the autodiscover service finds the values for the ExternalHosTname and Auth Package Parameter of the OutlookAnywhere and Outlook Providers objects in Active Directory.

However, if the value of the Server attribute is set incorrectly for the EXPR OutlookProvider object, this setting overrides the default service discovery mechanism used by the Autodiscover service. EXPR is one of the Outlook providers that can be managed by using the cmdlet: Get-OutlookProvider and Set-OutlookProvider in the Exchange Management Shell.

[Solution]

========
The Server attribute for the OutlookProvider object should remain at its default setting of $null.

Set-OutlookProvider EXPR -Server $null

We can check the value of the Server attribute by running the Get-OutlookProvider cmdlet

Get-OutlookProvider Identity | format-list

In order to apply the above changes immediately. We can restart Internet Information Services (IIS) or recycle MSExchangeAutodiscoverAppPool on the Exchange server that runs the Client Access server role

.

To recycle MSExchangeAutodiscoverAppPool, which is the application pool for the Autodiscover service on the Exchange Client Access server, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Internet Information Server Management console.
  2. Expand the Application Pools container.
  3. Right-click MSExchangeAutodiscoverAppPool, and then click Recycle.

Microsoft OS Licensing query

Hi Team,

I have a specific query to you . As per the product documentation of Microsoft Windows 2012 Std edition, Its coming with two virtual licenses and one physical license.

However I got confused after reading the below in the Microsoft documentation .

All physical processors need to be licensed. Each license covers up to two physical processors. You may run the server software in one physical OSE and in up to two virtual OSEs for each license you assign. If you run all of the permitted instances the instance in the physical OSE can only be used to manage the virtual OSEs.

Can any clear the confusion will be of great help . I have a requirement of three virtual machine running three different version of SQL Server. So if I purchase Windows 2012 standard edition  and install hyver role then I will get two vm instance to install SQL server. Now my query apart from this can  I install sql server in the base os of the same hyperv machine ? . As per the above statement given by Microsoft is "If you run all of the permitted instances the instance in the physical OSE can only be used to manage the virtual OSEs. "

Reply:

Hi,

if you install your three SQL Server instances on three Windows Server VMs than you need to purchase an additional Windows Server 2012 std license while you cannot install 2 SQL Servers on the 2 VMs and the third SQL instance on the physical Server instance.

the physical OSE can only be used to manage the virtual OSEs.

thanks

diramoh

Reply:

If you install any other role on the physical host, you forfeit one of your VM licenses.  Also, running other roles on the host puts you in an unsupported role.  Microsoft only supports Hyper-V when that is the only role installed.

For future reference, Hyper-V related questions should be posted in the Hyper-V forum here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/threads

New disks on Protected members

We've got 30 physical servers protected by DPM.

We are about migrate to a new 3PAR.

This means that existing servers (not the DPM-servers themselves of course) will have both their bootdisk as well as their data-disks copied to a new LUN, provisioned from the new storage.

Since DPM use change block tracking, Im guessing that a datamigration plan using robocopy will cause all the files to be treated as new, causing the recoverypoints to be maxed out beyond our resources.

Any ideas how we can copy files to new disks and keep the journaling?

Reply:

Hi Ivarson,

I contact DPM team about this question. There is no specific step to do this job. Also they mentioned that maybe we can use software mirror to "duplicate" the operation system drive as a workaround. However it is not tested so you may try on a test machine before applying to your environment. Here is the reply:

There really is no clean solution here except possibly using Windows software mirroring and when you break the mirror, you keep the half located on the 3PAR. This would mean attaching the 3PAR lun to the system, convert both disks to Dynamic – make sure DPM continues protection – then make and break a Mirror.

Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and un-mark them if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact tnmff@microsoft.com.

Thank you Shaon.

I tried this at home on a simple storagespace with some usbdrives.

Im not sure what DPM is reading to determine whether the file/folder is modified,

but i can verify that as you say, convert, make'n break of a mirrored volume doesn't modify the output from "

fsutil usn readdata <filename>

", looking at the USN-field.

But if issuing

fsutil usn queryjournal <driveletter>

the property "Next Usn" increments when I "break" the mirroring.

The question remains, will an offline diskclone (from a bootable WinPE envionment) retain all journaling?

I know Windows keeps track on the disks after clone process within the registry at HKLM\System\MountedDevices

I took a server at work to test stuff a bit further, although our 3PAR isn't up til' tomorrow so was only able to provision LUNs from our existing storage.

Basically it seems pretty straight forward in terms of DPM (there's tons of considerations elsewhere with sanboot and all).

I did find the initial hint from the DPM-group pretty clever, I like that the migration is being done in such low-level and that you won't get any distruptions at all.

But converting all 30 servers disks from basic to dynamic as well as having a 2 TB drive with critical data in a "sync"-state... it sort of feels a bit more risky.

Consideration 1; The changejournal which DPM activates when protecting a volume will not retain the same USN when a file is simply copied (like robocopy) even if driveletters are 'swapped' so a full backup will be performed.

Solution: VSS-aware application such as DriveImage XML can do live copying without causing the changelog to update the sequence number for a file. It's awfully slow though. don't know if its the vss-lock or the specific application here that makes it slow.

An 'offline' disk-to-disk copy performed via WinPE is much faster (a free but proprietary backup/restore application) and will also retain the journal.

Only drawback is that we can't speed up migration by pre-copying everything before maintanence window and do a final mirroring (robocopy /MIR),

Consideration 2: DPM binds its protected source to a protected member's volume GUID (not the driveletter). Cloning a disk/partition at the protected member will effectively result in Windows giving the new disk a unique volume guid, since a disk has a unique serialnumber, and this in turn will result in a unique hex checksum as seen in HKLM\system\mounteddevices.

After cloning, an error occurs in DPM during recoverypoint saying <volume guid> is missing at protected member

solution: The script 'migrate-datasource.ps1' which is located and shipped in the dpm-servers installdir takes care of this just fine.

Any corrections, suggestions or whatnot input is welcome'd.

dns sorting unusable

I had to sort some dns entries in the dns manager on the dns server and fout out that is it doing al it's sorting text based. :-(

This was tested on a Windows 2008 R2 (SP1) server. On a Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) server the ip-numbers get sorted correctly and the timestamp field is not available.

So ip-numbers are listed as:
172.16.132.1
172.16.132.11
172.16.132.12
172.16.132.2
172.16.132.21
etc.

Sorting by date/time gives me:
1-10-2009
1-9-2009
2-9-2009
3-11-2010
4-1-2011
4-2-2010
5-12-2009
etc.

Can someone please ask the developers to change this to a relevant way of sorting the view? The current way is all but unusable.

Hi Bonno,

Thanks for posting here.

Yes, this is a new changing in Windows Server 2008 and above versions .

As a workaround , you can export records to Excel and sort it by number.

Thanks.

Well I hope MS will change this asap as the current sorting makes no sense at all. Might be a nice adition to SP2 for Server 2008 R2.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.  Who in their right mind would want to sort numeric data alphabetically?  Sure I can export to excel, sort, then go find all the records in MMC one at a time.  Oh ya, that makes perfect sense.  Thanks a lot Microsoft.

Export to Excel? Please.. The sorting is also a problem when trying to sort by Timestamp.

------------------------------------
Reply:

I'm just stunned that there are so few complaints about this when you Google it.  How in the world does this get through testing?

For the timestamp idiocy, you can go to personalization and change your default time format to YYYY-MM-DD and time to HH:mm  and it will sort properly but you've really just hacked an alpha sort that should have been a date time sort.

Another person wondering why this has been changed from working to broken?

Is there any actual reason behind breaking sorting in the DNS Manager?

Is there a ticket open to un-change this is a future service pack?

Does Microsoft now break things and then fix them in future versions (Server 8?) as they don't have enough reasons to get people to upgrade?

Just like with the Exchange/IE9 MMC fiasco, I've just been waiting for a fix to what must be known by everyone who manages AD or DNS in Windows, but after finally researching it there appears to be no fix forthcoming as MS feels that it's not broken.

If somebody at Microsoft could at least confirm that this will no be fixed, and possibly explain why they broke it, sorry I mean changed it, then those of us who use this daily will at least stop waiting for the fix/un-change.

Mr. Li,

This doesn't work as a workaround. I'm trying to sort these by age within the DNS manager to perform maintenance. Moving these values into Excel to sort does nothing for me. Is there a fix for this issue yet?

Thanks,

C

I'm using RSAT for Windows 8 and I get the same issue. And I agree, exporting into Excel really isn't an acceptable answer.

Just for the records..

We are now in 2015 with Windows Server 2012 R2 and the problem is still the same. Sorting by date is nothing but unusable.

Worked fine on dozens of servers, but not this one. (Printer server)

Refactoring Profile Scripts

Hello Experts,

We are using a PowerShell profile which points to script on a network share. This Script which will load a module which will in turn dot source the scripts on the network share. As the number scripts is getting increased it is getting difficult to manage. Please advise on the best practices on combining the scripts into modules and calling them from the parent module or is there any better way to achieve this task. Thanks.

Reply:

Scripts should be isolated into separate modules.  Hey will load "on demand" with V3 and later.  No need to load any modules.  Just use the functions and the modules will be discovered and loaded.  Try to keep modules as small as necessary collecting related functions.

Design of software systems takes experience.  As you build and test you should gain  some of that experience.  Ask specific questions as they arise.
