same 10130 build, different icons in start menu (??)
How is this possible? This screenshot shows a start menu of a desktop pc (left) and the start menu of a laptop (right). The two pc have the same 10130 build, as you can see the 'options' icon is different and the laptop one lacks the 'explore files' icon.
The desktop pc was upgraded from 10074 to 10130 while the laptop has a longer story of updates as I installed windows 10 a lot earlier than in desktop.

If you go to Settings/Personalisation/Start and then click on Customise List, you can add File Explorer and Settings to the menu in the bottom corner when you click the Start button. This menu is separate from the list of applications above it in your screenshots.
The icon for Settings in this menu is different to the full icon used for settings on tiles and in the All aps list.

Milestones and summary tasks
Hey everyone,
A long time ago I'd read that linking summary tasks together was a good idea - if say you had a task of 'development' which was a summary, and had 10 items below it, linking this to say a testing task was a good idea - it meant that adding more development tasks would mean the testing task would move automatically without having to add more predecessors to the testing task each time.
In theory, this sounds great. Since then I've had some Project training (sadly a while ago and I didn't get to use it much after that). The training, and several articles, suggest that summary tasks should never be used to link tasks - i.e. a summary task should never be a predecessor or successor. (There's many articles on Google, one such example: http://www.stakeholdermap.com/ms-project/link-summary-tasks-ms-project.html)
In the example I have now I want to create a 'development completion' milestone. At the moment the development phase is quite a few tasks, I guess when I have all of them from the developers it'll be around 200 tasks. Does this mean my dev completion milestone needs to have 200 predecessors, all individually added, with every task then being added to the milestone predecessors column when added?
This seems to me:
1. Error prone - add a task, it would be easy to forget to add it to the completion milestone.
2. Hard to check - with 200 tasks on a milestone it would be hard to see if you'd missed one.
3. That I must be missing something! - What would someone do with a 5 year project with several thousand tasks?!
My development schedule is something like this:
Development
Back end
Area 1
Task A, B, C, D...
Front end
Area 1
Task A, B, C, D...
Obviously having multiple areas and tasks below them. Could I create milestones at the end of each Area which were linked to individual tasks using the predecessors column, and then could my dev completion milestone be linked to several of these milestones?
Hopefully you can see my dilemma and someone can suggest a good course of action for me - my situation must be very common.
Thanks in advance :)

Without knowing much about your overall project structure:
: If you are going to track 200 tasks, then you are going to have 200 tasks to handle. Maybe simplify and track less?
: Since it's a best practice (and I would say a requirement) for all tasks to have successor tasks or milestones (if no successor then what' the point?), then "forgetting" to connect a task to a completion milestone is unforgivable and to do so is a "bug".
: For a 5-year project, surely one would break it down to be simpler, perhaps by year or key milestones. One would have to have a milestone plan to manage the project, regardless of how portrayed in the MS Project plan. (Ideally the milestones used by the Project Team and Sponsors would be the same as in the MS Project plan, of course).
: Yes, you could have completion milestones by "area", or even by "end" to collect completions within that grouping. At first glance, that's what I would do. But--does it actually make sense in your project to organise deliverables by Area and End? Only you know; but if that does not match how the tasks will be actually be executed, then that may lead to unnecessary complexity. For example, maybe you will have someone be in charge of all the "Task A's", and someone else in charge of "Task B's" regardless of Area and End. Just think about it.
: When there are so many ways to organise a project I use a lot of Text Columns to define these other ways to tagging a task, then I use Grouping to show the status/project/plan in all these different ways. The freedom to allow this sort of flexible viewing of a project plan comes alive when one does not do any summary task linking (yet another reason not to that).

Thanks for your response Rob. I will have these tasks to track but on the whole this won't be that bad. The developers are using another system to record their tasks so I can simply see when tasks are done and mark them as complete. The only option to track less would be to have 'Area A Development' and sum the total of the dev tasks, but in doing that I'll have less information and still have to keep track of the tasks but just roll them up myself.
What I'd setup before your response was this:
*All tasks have a predecessor, in some cases this is just the requirements document for the area.
*All areas have a milestone task 'completion', which uses the IDs of the tasks mentioned above.
*An overall 'development completion' milestone was created which had the IDs of the above milestones as it's predecessor.
Is there anything wrong with this logic? - I'm not using summary tasks for any form of linking, just 'chaining milestones' if you like. Assuming this isn't a MS Project no-no it makes perfect sense for the way the project is running in my eyes.
This does mean one of my milestones at the moment has about 25 IDs as its predecessors but that's still manageable at the moment.
Thanks for the note about text columns, I too use these a small amount for the reasons you state, it can be very useful.
Many thanks for taking the time to read my post and for a comprehensive reply.
Rob.

Hi Rob,
It's not that Project will explode in your face when you link summary tasks. The thing to remember is, when you link summary task, to NEVER start dragging and dropping tasks from one summary task to another one - that may make your project react badly, i.e. stop calculating altogether on that file - the repair from there is then to unlink summary tasks!
So feel free to link summary tasks - but do not complain when you get into trouble after dragging and dropping!
Greetings,

I actually used to do it and find it to work okay, however, with all the reading I've done I sense it's not the best course of action.
I guess what I'm now doing, and wondering if it's correct, is 'chaining milestones' - so in effect I'm using just straight tasks (not summary) to create milestones, and then I'm creating 'milestones of milestones' and so on...
Logically this makes sense, but then so did linking summary tasks before I was informed this was bad practice!
------------------------------------
Reply:
1. The best practice suggested will definitely put the planning of tasks in right path. When ever I add a task, I start with predecessor, resource, work,.. and complete with successor. We build our plans cohesively so that any new task is never left as an orphan or with out a successor.
If a practice of putting predecessors or successors to only non summary tasks is followed, it would be easy to check if a particular non summary task is missing a successor.
Using milestones to effectively box a set of tasks and drive the dates is a great way of doing things
I have also noted issues/bugs when dependencies set at summary task level at multiple hierarchical levels have caused erroneous flows.
Having said that...
If a natural relation ship between activities is through summary task, then you should not shy away from it
For example, once you complete building walls, you would do flooring. There is no harm and technically there is nothing wrong with it.
For an advanced user, linking summary tasks helps in multiple ways.
The errors explained in article you pasted are good examples, however they resulted in wrongful usage of concept and not wrong concept by itself.

Interestingly I never consider successors. I guess if I displayed this column then it would make a lot more sense and if I followed this work flow the chances of 'missing' something would be very small. Thanks for the tip :)
I think for now I'll stick to not using summary tasks except for 'presentation purposes'. I think that's safer.
Thanks for the feedback and insight, most helpful.

Rob,
If you are not considering successors then you are not checking to see that every task has one. This should be checked and every task should have at least one FS0 successor. You need a closed network where every task is on a path from the start milestone to the finish milestone (and no predecessors or successors on the summaries).
My recommendation: never link summaries, never assign resources, work or cost to summaries.
Reasons: You want to find a critical path, you want to track progress, you want to be able to level, you don't want circular references... plus other reasons.
------------------------------------
Reply:
Thanks Trevor. I guess I wasn't considering successors but I was adding them as I was tying predecessors to milestones and milestones - adding the successors column in a plan I have at the moment shows it is correctly linked up. However, doing this via the successors route as opposed to making a massive list of 30 task IDs and copy/pasting from notepad into a milestone will make things much easier.
Before making this post I never assigned anything to summaries - I quickly found out that lead to over allocation if one wasn't careful, and it didn't make sense - because you're linking someone to a container, not an actual task.
I'll check out the videos in a moment too - thanks both Trevor and Mark for the links.

Windows application encountered login failed for user 'NT Authority/Anonymous Logon'
Hi,
We have built a windows application using VB.NET with SQL Server as the database. Some of our customers sites we are only allowed to use "Windows Authentication" while connecting to database. The application is required to grab data from two different database servers.
Customer master database is in Server(A), our application database is in Server(B) and installation of the windows application has taken place on Server(C) which is the apps server. When we test the application from apps server, we don't have any issue. The major issue is application short cut from Server(C) is created on Server(D). Users remote to Server(D) to access the application. Majority of the process we do not have any issues. Only Certain process we encounter the issue 'NT Authority/Anonymous Logon'.
I have tried to narrate much as i could to explain the real situation. Could anybody share some knowledge here to solve this issue. As the deadline given to me before 09/06/2015.

[Forum FAQ]How to customize the location of the user profile folder in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10122
Scenario
Sometimes users want to change the location of user profile folder under system drive to a different location, as the free space left is too small, but they don't want to configure folder redirection function in Windows, then we may consider to follow the steps described in this page.
Note: The user folder that you have configured using the following way will lose its older contents when upgrading. That is to say, Windows would reset the changes to default location after upgrading.
Solution
- Logon using an Admin account and open the Regedit.exe, then navigate to the following archive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
- On the right pane, find the value named ProfilesDirectory (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff715636.aspx ), which equals to %SystemDrive%\Users; double-click it and edit the value to X:\Users, see the screenshots:

Note: Please replace the X: with the available drive letter that on your own machine, and create a User folder under that drive. And please review the warning part described in the link: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff715636.aspx We don't recommend using this setting, except perhaps in a test environment. When this setting is changed, the Windows® Store and Windows Store apps are not supported.
According to testing result, after changing this value and created the new account, Windows Store and the apps would need to reload on a reboot, after that, they will behave normally.
3. After that, exit the regedit.exe, add a new user account using the Settings, then logon using the newly created account, the configuration process might be a little than usual, wait until it finishes;
4. Logon to check the folder under X:\Users, you will find a new folder created in it with the new account name;
5. If you would like to transfer your older user profile settings, follow the steps mentioned in the article below:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-corrupted-user-profile#1TC=windows-7

It's user profiles. Not just for the folders.
System loads the profile using the value stored in registry, that is where the files are truely stored, junction points just redirect the typed path to the real one, the location where the files being stored is not changed in this way.
What I should say is that this seems to be a temporary workaround, better leave the registry where it is, that is to say, after change the location, one should extend his system drive and restore the registry back to default.
And copy the profile back.

Monthly Total and Average
I have a SQL Server Report Builder 3.0 report that contains a report that has the following. I need this report to calculate the average days to close tickets by month.
Column A = Date Ticket Created
Column B = Date Ticket Closed
Column C = Number of Days to Close Ticket
I want to total the tickets for each month and run an average on them...by month.
This is what I need and have no idea how to accomplish it.
I will need to calculate the sum of days to close tickets for each month and then count the number of tickets for each month.
With these, I can create the average days to close tickets by month.
How do I accomplish this?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Instead of show/hide of complete this task button, why don;t you show the whole task only to Assigned user.
So there will be a view of My Task visible to users on a page.

Good day Daniel ,
If your problem is regarding adding your article link to the WIKI COMPETITION PAGE then you can post the article link here and one of will do it for you. Don't wait... we need more articles in this month!
Any way, yes.. the WIKI interface has lot of problems regarding saving the article after editing. It take sometimes several attempts (even 10 or more). Just try again...

The problem was adding the page to the wiki in the first place, not just to the competition page. It would be great if Ed or someone could walk me through this or perhaps someone would do a video tutorial of the ins and outs of the wiki editor. There is a template manager button in the editor that never finishes loading on my end. The images don't load when added. The SQL text gets extra line feeds and each section ends up miles apart from the next. I just don't get it.
I added some content to an article I wrote years ago and seemed to mess that up too. Can someone help reformat it? http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3214.monitoring-disk-usage.aspx Jamie left MSFT shortly after posting it for me.

Hi Daniel,
I reformatted a bit more than 1/2 of the article, there is much more to do in the second half :-)
It look ok now (including TOP) till this sentence:
"In addition to these recommendations, consider tuning queries that generate large amounts of I/O. To identify queries that consume large amounts of I/O, use the SYS.DM_EXEC_QUERY_STATS DMV."
It took long time and it is VERY boring work...
I might do the rest in future or maybe someone else can do the second half.
PLEASE CHECK WHAT I DID, since I did not checked the content, but only the format.

I asked a while ago, and got a moderator response, but here goes again.
Is this sufficiently edited to allow re-submission?

Thanks man. Is there a tutorial on editing the wiki articles? I don't mind doing the formatting work, I just can't figure out how to actually make it function.

There are several WIKI's article regarding issues like how to write a WIKI article. I don't remember the links :-) you can try search them using google or using the WIKI internal search form.
Regarding how I did it, I basically wrote it from scretch. The procedure that I use is:
1. open the article in HTML edit mode
2. add several paragraph tags: <p><br /></p>
* the reason is that if the format is bad and you just us the "enter" key, then the line created in the same format.
3. now I jut copy (not cut) each sentence or paragraph to NOTEPAD and then copy the clean text from NOTEPAD into the blank lines that I prepared.
4. next is to manually format the text according to the original text, which man add under-line, bold, list
* this is done using the built-in buttons. Therefore the new format is clean
5. delete the old text that I copied.

Hi Patrick
If you ask regarding re-submission old article to the competition then I think this had never been don and it is not the purpose of the competition. the idea is articles that posted first time in the current month. I think that opening this to re-submission will make lot of mess.
* there was talking regarding another competition which will be like best articles of the year. This might fit there (to open the competition to re-submission). It is actually a good idea. but anyway, at this time this competition dose not exist yet.
** in anycase, these question should be answered by Ed probably :-)
so above is just my opinion.

The reason I ask Ronen, is that the article was pretty much re-created, just around the original topic. It's pretty much another article on the same topic, but using the same base code in the examples.
It was previously submitted, and I didn't want to break any rules if it wasn't eligible because of this.

I had the same issue several times. several times i see an article which is just too poor in my opinion or it is just incorrect and give wrong solution. I understand that when we re-write the article from scratch or almost from scratch we want to get the acknowledged for what we have done. but in the same time I think that open the monthly computation to re-submission articles might leads to more problems than advantages (I am sure that people will re-submit their own article and that raise questions).
* I remember extreme case that someone posted an article which was actually with wrong code from the start to end. At first I post several comments for the OP on facebook, he fixed it several times but still dd not get the basic idea (each time I gave a sample that his code will not work). In that case eventually, I chose to write a blog on the issue and not re-write the article, but in most cases this is the idea of WIKI, if it can be improved than it should be improve :-)
* We do need an option for second author, for each article, I think. This will give several advantages. One of these is to add rule that the second author can re-submit the article. So in short, this will give us an organized and monitored option for two submissions for each article.

personal information stored in Lync servers
Hi
Is there Microsoft document detailing Lync servers security of personal information?
Like storage of IM conversations, files shared/transfered via the client, powerpoint shared during collaboration sessions, etc.
Basically I want to know if anything from the above is stored/saved on the Lync servers, making it available for access from a rogue administrator?

Hi
I knew this link but the information there is not I have been searching for.
The statement there is about features in Lync rather than who has access to this information/data.
That is the reason why I've mentioned a rogue admin and kind of Lync user private data to which the admin could gain access .

There is a good description of what is stored in the file store from meetings here http://blog.schertz.name/2013/03/breaking-down-lync-file-share/ basically powerpoints that were uploaded, whiteboards and polls
Files transferred between users are P2P so are not stored on the server.
IM conversations are only stored when you enable message archiving and then they are stored in the LCSLog database.
Don't forget if you turn on Conversation History for the user it will be in their Exchange folder so there are other areas an admin could use to view IM content
