setting up linksys wireless router

setting up linksys wireless router

Hi,

I recently bought a new cisco linksys wag120n wireless router. I have got a WAN internet connection at my place where the ISP has provided an ethernet cable directly to plug in the computer. I have also got the MAC address registered with the ISP. Tried almost all possible setting options but to no avail. The internet didnt worked even once. In a simple language the router should connect to the internet, but its not happening. Its not able to do so and when i troubleshoot the problem from the Network & Sharing Center the error messages displayed are "DNS server isnt responding" or "DHCP is not enabled"

Kindly help...

It sounds like you are having an issue with your Internet conncection, I would suggest calling your ISP and then if you still cant get call a local IT company to assist you.

OSD Deployment - no DHCP, only via MAC Address

Hi All

We are looking to do OSD not via PXE but via the MAC Address.Currently i have managed to get this working for one Server.  To do this i imported a device using the MAC address i had, joined the device to my imaging device collection, deployed my OSD to that collection and then ran the ISO image.

Imputed the IP address for this and the task sequence was picked up and ran installation and successfully installed an OS after a few user interactions.

My question is if i was to do this for a big set of OSD, how can  import all MAC Addresses in the SCCM for this to work. Also is there an easier method for this as seems a bit long winded to enter all MAC address.

Many thanks.

That does not make sense. OSD and PXE are different things. You can initiate an OSD using PXE. And ConfigMgr needs to know the MAC address (or SMBIOSGUID) in order to respond to a PXE request or bootable media (when not using unkown computer support).
So what are you really asking for? You want to deploy an OS without entering the MAC first? Then you could use "unknown computer support".

Hi,

You could also import a .CSV file with all the names/MAC addresses, but as Torsten writes I would prefer using Unknown computer support.

One other point (strictly based on the thread's title), it is not possible to use PXE without DHCP; put another way, PXE requires DHCP. There is no wiggle room or work-around for this. As Torsten said though, OSD does not require PXE and is something different.

WINDOWS 7 AND 8 BUG: Explorer Locks "thumbs.db" in most recently viewed folder

I found a bug with Windows Explorer and did a little research.  I came across this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/ca2cbc1a-362f-4f01-a8f8-6f05112f1915?prof=required

That thread has been locked even though the problem was not actually fixed!  (Work arounds are not fixes.)

I am having the problem on Windows 8 Enterprise with folders of MP3s.  Sometimes when I try to move or delete a folder it says that thumbs.db is in use by Windows Explorer.  Some people blame Adobe software (I do have Acrobat installed).  Other people found work arounds by disabling thumbnails.  I only tried one work around and it worked; that was to change the folder view away from details to a different view.

I can't understand why this bug still exists almost 3 years after that thread was created.  I especially don't understand how the bug survived it to the next version of the OS.

The fix is to disable the generation of Thumbs.db via Group Policy.  That is not a workaround.  It's the disabling of a flawed feature that is no longer needed, but which has been left enabled for compatibility with (who knows what?).

·    Go to the Start screen

·    Type gpedit.msc in the search box and hit Enter.

·    Expand User Configuration- Administrative Templates - Windows Components.

·    Click on File Explorer.

·    In the right pane, Right-click the entry Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files
and choose Edit.  Be careful to get the right one, as there are several settings with similar names.

·    Enable the setting and OK out.

THIS DOES NOT CAUSE ANY DEGRADATION OF WINDOWS FEATURES.  Explorer uses a completely different means to cache thumbnails now, and has for years.  In fact, it will make your system MORE efficient and responsive.

Do YOU have a 3rd party application that needs Thumbs.db files to function?  If so, what?  I've not run across one for a long, long time.

You're kidding yourself if you think Microsoft is going to put any effort into fixing the system to generate Thumbs.db in some magical way that keeps it from being a problem when manipulating the folder.

It's kind of amazing that Microsoft would feel comfortable in simply DELETING so many features people actually use, yet they've left this in the system so long, and haven't even bothered to change the default setting to off.

You are using the word "fix" when you mean "work around".  When a bug is fixed the user needs to do nothing more than apply a patch.

I may not need thumbs.db, but the bug fix would be as simple as having Explorer unlock it's file lock when someone tries to delete thumbs.db from Explorer.

BTW what is your suggestion if someone on Windows 7 Home experiences this problem?  Windows 7 Home editions do not have the Group Policy Editor.  You can't seriously suggest the fix to a bug is to have a normal user use the registry editor.

Thank you for your help, but it's not an acceptable solution for a bug.  It is a valid work-around, but Microsoft should fix it, not tell the user to change a setting that could possibly interfere with certain software.

It's nice to see fresh optimism.  I suppose you think you're helping Microsoft make their product better.  Beautiful dreamer!

Hey, if the proper semantics are what you need to be happy, Microsoft did FIX their prior bad design by now caching thumbnails in a separate central database.  They don't actually use Thumbs.db for anything.  You just have to WORK AROUND the remant compatibility functionality that creates Thumbs.db by turning it off.  Its need is long gone.

Isn't it clear that this is all they're going to do about this issue?

If Windows 7 Home users have the problem, the solution is to either spend the time getting smarter about how to tweak windows through the back door - or buy a better copy of Windows that allows them to configure their "To Work" options legitimately.  And don't look now, but we're in the Windows 8 forum, and Microsoft provides gpedit.msc with every version of Windows 8 now, as far as I know.

It's great that Microsoft was able to implement a new thumbnail caching system, but their implementation of the legacy thumbs.db has a bug of locking the file.  The legacy compatibility is enabled by default so I expect it to be as bug-free as it can be.  When I pay for an OS I expect quality (e.g. regular bug fixes and security patches); when I get a free OS I expect a community to tell me how to how to work around the known problems that may or may not be fixed eventually.  Maybe I need to change my expectations.

I would at least expect Microsoft to by default disable thumbs.db compatibility if their implementation is blatantly buggy if they are not going to fix it.  I am not here to get my computer able to delete thumbs.db.  I am trying to get this message to the developers so it doesn't carry on until Explorer gets a whole re-coding down the road.

I did not know that all desktop editions of Windows 8 come with gpedit.msc.  That's great to hear. :)

Like I said, the FIX from Microsoft is already in:  It was to avoid the use of Thumbs.db for anything, implementing a replacement strategy that actually works (or at least doesn't get in the way of you manipulating your folders).

The WORKAROUND, if that's what you want to call it, is to turn off the remnant of the original flawed implementation, which was left laying around for whatever reason.

The semantic key here worth worrying about is that you lose NO FUNCTIONALITY by disabling the Thumbs.db generation in a modern system, save for the dwindling possibility that you're running some ancient, outdated application that expects those files to be in place.  Do you know of one?  The FIX for that is to update that application as well to a modern version that no longer expects Thumbs.db to be present.

Call it a WORKAROUND with no downside if that floats your boat.

But focus on this:  Since there's no reasonable way to FIX the generation of Thumbs.db in the background so that it will somehow magically hop out of the way just when you want to manipulate your folder, the FIX is to have it hop out of the way permanently.  It was simply a stupid original design - something Microsoft has had no shortage of in their history.  Was it because they had a C student coding it?  Or maybe because the design was hurried along?  Who knows.

If the use of thumbs.db is so rare as you suggest then why is it enabled by default?

Microsoft can fix the bug properly if you stop giving excuses of why they won't consider it.  I don't care who wrote the original code.  It may work properly on XP, but when they ported it to Windows 7/8 it caused problems.  If old code causes problems then they should fix it or remove it.

Two ways for Microsoft to prevent this from happening in "Windows 9" or even Windows 8 SP1:

  • Fix the buggy code so it either does not lock the file or so it will unlock the file when Explorer (the same process locking the file) will unlock it at deletion time.
  • Disable the "unneeded" feature.  (It's not disabled so I assume they have a reason to keep it for more than just compatibility with programs from 1995.)

I hope Arthur Xie submitted my feedback to someone who can address the issue properly.

As I said previously, when I pay for an operating system I expect the developers to fix the bugs so an out-of-the-box installation does not have them.

------------------------------------
Reply:

LOL, do you honestly think that my pointing out the proper way to configure the OS for best operation is going to sway Microsoft against changing their default?

No one here can possibly know why they left it enabled.  Maybe the guy who coded the change planned to change the default in the next major release, but then retired.  Or maybe the boss' favorite game needs it.  Maybe there's a popular app I've never seen that needs it.  But that doesn't mean YOU need it, and you won't find out until you try changing the setting.

But your heart is in the right place.  I've been hoping for years that they'll pay attention to long-standing problems such as this one and make changes - and in fact they DID do so in this case.  But generally speaking they're all but blind to several nagging Explorer problems, and I just don't see them moving toward making things better.  Let us know if you sense that in their latest work.

Unfortunately this lab is scheduled to be taken down; we currently have no time line for bringing it back up or replacing it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks,

Wow! Can you just feel the love in this response! "Scheduled"?? When? The labs are still there today - why keep these up there if they are not working?

"No time line for replacing it"?? This is the 2012 version not 2005 or 2000. Seriously?

Hi John.

To answer your question, if you want to use P2V for your Windows Server 2008 R2 system, there are a few things you can do.

First thing to note is in both VMM 20008 and 2012, P2V will not work for partitions greater than 2TB (2048 GB); which is MBR.

Assuming the partition in question is not greater than 2TB, you will first need to convert the GTP partition to MBR. This should doable under Disk Management.

To change the GTP partition to MBR, see this link:

Windows 8 RTM Apps (Modern UI Apps) do not work when connected through VPN

It seems that it is a known issue. When I am connected through VPN to the internet, some Modern UI apps show offline error (e.g Bing sport- Bing News) . It is a case for some other third party apps too(e.g AccueWeather) . I have tried different clients and servers but the problem remains. Though I found a work around: When I switch my Ethernet cable modem from PPPoA/PPPoE to Bridge Mode, and I setup the internet connection manually and then get connected to the VPN server, everything works fine. (I want to be connected in PPPoA/PPPoE Mode!)

PS: I have noticed that even when the apps themselves show offline error, their tiles on start screen get updates.

I'm having the same issue, although bridging and manually setting up ip's did nothing to solve this.

The only solution I found was to uncheck the use of default gateway in advanced settings of ipv4 for the vpn connection. Which is a win/lose situation. You'll be somewhat connected, but not really 'locally virtual.' Can we get a solution for this mix up?

Hello friends,

it might not be a big thing, it might just be a missing running service! I searched for 2 weeks and Microsoft support asked me to uninstall anti virus clients and create a new user to test apps without success. Then I found out that the apps that worked on my PC have the right to access local or company network and the internet, but only the once allowed to use the local network also did their job. Apps allowed to use the interet connection only should work but did not.

Then found some work arounds on the Internet using Fiddler for analysing the network connections of the apps via this route I found out that the root cause of the problem was so easy in my case: The DNS Client Service was deactivated

Activate the DNS Client Service, start it manually and switch it to run automatically in future and it might be that also on your computer all the apps will work fine in future!

Here I found the answer and how to fix the problem: social.technet.microsoft.com

One question so far... Print spooler is a VM now. Does it mean MS is following "no more clustered services, everything should be using guest VM cluster" ideology?

--

In contrast to previous versions of Windows Server, Windows Server 2012 defines a highly available print server as a Hyper-V virtual machine(VM) running on a node in a cluster. A single virtual machine with the Print Server role installed can then be migrated from one node in the Hyper-V cluster to the other using either manual or automatic methods.

For the print spooler this is the ideology going forward (the rational explained in the blog).

For the remaining services there is definitely a value prop for having HA stand-alone clustered services and this ideology will be supported in future releases (think SQL etc.).

Is it possible to send SMS notification alerts on call assigned in SCSM using SCCM and SMS gateway

Dear All,

I was wondering if it is possible to to send SMS notification alerts on call assigned in SCSM using SCCM and SMS gateway.

If SCOM can send SMS I think SCSM should also be able to do, and there should not be a need to purchase and partner product to integrate the requirement....

Hi,

there is no integration pack for doing this directly - in other words there is as far as I know no IP for talking with an SMS gateway. It depends how you can communitcate with your gateway. If you need to start a program, than you need the "Run Program" Activity within the "System" section.

Azure Table Storage DoesTableExist() Hangup

I have a website deployed on a WebRole that is trying to access an Azure Table Storage account. In my code, I create a CloudStorageAccount and then I use that to get a CloudTableClient. Then, before I create the Table Service Query, I check to make sure that the Table I am trying to access already exists, even though I know that it does, by calling "tableClient.DoesTableExist(TableName)", and for some reason it gets hung up at that line for about 2 minutes, and sometimes times out because the request takes too long. So, I tried removing that check, since I know that the table exists, but then when I try to get the Data Service Context, by calling "tableClient.GetDataServiceContext()", it gets hung up there instead. Upon further testing I found that after the first time, all other requests go right through and work as they should. It seems to be that the first time anything tries to access the Table, it gets hung up, but then its fine until you close the browser and start over.

I have also noticed that this problem only occurs when a user is logged into the site, which has really baffled me. I am using the .NET FormsAuthentication. It seems to be that if the user has not logged in, the first hit to the Table is quick like it should be. The problem only seems to be when the user is logged in, and only the first time the Table is hit.

I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the issue is, so any help would be appreciated. I haven't read anything anywhere of anyone having the same issue. I am just running out of things to try.

Thanks,

Mr. Ninja

Do You Know These 2?

When in an APP and > Charms, Search applies to within that APP.  Example: > NEWS APP > Charms, in Search type Calgary, immediately shows all Calgary News items.

When in an APP and > Charms > Settings, ALL menu items that show pertain to 'options' or 'controls' for that APP.

When in an APP, everything in Charms is geared to that APP.
AND, when in an APP, Win+I pops out ITS Charms Bar. This applies to Desktop, also.

Even better is that some applications (like the Windows Store App) behave like the Start screen: you don't even have to open the Charms to search; just start typing when you've opened the Windows Store app!

And an additional one for the keyboard monkeys: Windows key + Q is the same as opening the Charms and clicking on the Search charm while inside an application.

Nice gesture of you Drew to inform people of this new, hidden, functionality :) (and I took the liberty of adding a few other related tricks)

I'd add that some dictionary apps miss Search field on their display what confuses people for the first time, but that's only because they haven't yet heard of this search within app feature. You don't need to implement search and re-invent the wheel if your app supports Search contract, I'm quoting here:

Search contract

You can add a search pane to your app so users can search not only your app's content but content from other apps as well. Users can also transfer the search query itself to other apps. When you participate in this contract, you agree to make your app's content searchable by other participants and to present search results from those participants in your app.

Participating in this contract helps you gain traffic and usage for your app. For more info, see Adding search.

Unfortunately, few developers are aware of this feature and few implement this, very useful, functionality to search within apps.

And yes, that's the great feature of charms, they are context sensitive, that's why you can configure settings of any app using the same scheme, just by pressing WindowsKey+I. You don't have to learn how to do that in app B if you already used this in app A because experience is the same.

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

Cool, Robert.  I had started compiling the one I showed many months ago.  It has been kept fairly complete & updated but, not necessarily absolutely everything that could be mentioned.  Plus, for myself, I tend to do some things in 8 in less complicated ways than Microsoft sometimes explain or give to people.  Also, one will find there are multiple ways to reach the same thing in Windows 8... in time & by trying to various methods, one can arrive at what they like best for themselves as individuals.

That said... it might be cool for Folks to look at everything as there may be good, info in 1 offering that is not mentioned in another, so, yeah, maybe check out all of them, them being resources.

Cheers,
Drew

retrive all "Primary site colletion administators and their email using powershell

Hello,

Can anyone help me with powershell to retrive all "Primary site colletion administators and their email"?

Thanks

I've written a PowerShell script to do this in the past, but its not a short or simple script and is way too long to post here.  Essentially you will have to recursively walk through the entire farm, read the Primary site admin as an SPUSer object and then get the login name and email from that from each site collection.  Then output each of them to a file.

PLSQL is an Oracle and is not part of SQL Server; you need to ask you question at an Oracle forum -- such as here.

There are some ways, but as they say "There ain't such thing as a free lunch".

Nowadays, I believe that Microsoft is more ready to give "free" Windows 8 than Windows 7.

Anyways, here are few pointers:

  • Get hired by someone who is covered by volume licensing program
  • Get hired by Microsoft partner. Microsoft partners get certain number of licenses for their own use
  • Get involved in a project where "not for resale" - NFR licenses are given away.
  • Get involved in some Microsoft technology and become Most Valuable Professional - MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/
  • Get involved with Microsoft in a Microsoft sponsored event or campaign. It doesn't have to be big one like Teched. Microsoft is involved in many local events. I believe that now there are campaigns going on promoting Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Office 2013, System Center and so on.
  • Get involved in local community sponsored by Microsoft.

I think you get the idea. You may not need to pay with money, but you will have to put effort into promoting Microsoft technologies.

PowerShell Errors

So, I wanted to run a PowerShell script to do some administrative tasks in SharePoint 2010.  Kept getting the error: "The local farm is not accessible. Cmdlets with FeatureDependencyId are not registered." under every user I'd try it from and would subsequently get errors when trying to run the administrative commands.

Ok, I thought, lets look into this local farm not accessible issue.  Tons of searching (basically my whole morning) went into it.  The user is already a domain admin as well as local admin on the SharePoint server (explicitly set, just in case).  The user is also explicitly set as a member of the WSS_ADMIN_WPG group.  Running PowerShell as Administrator did not resolve the issue.

Found the permissions needed in SQL and tried to apply them to the account no avail, or so I thought given nothing I tried resolved the issue.  I could assign the SharePoint_Shell_Access to the account if the user was anything but dbo, but it didn't fix the problem.  Giving the user db_owner permissions also did nothing to resolve the issue.

After hours of messing around with permissions, I decided I would just try running some commands anyways and got this error: "Microsoft SharePoint is not supported with version 4.0.30319.269 of the Microsoft .Net Runtime."  This got me thinking, maybe it wasn't an issue with permissions after all, so I started digging again.  Come to find out, because SharePoint 2010 is on .NET 3.5, it isn't compatible with the version of PowerShell installed on Win 2008 R2, which runs .NET 4 by default.  Well, that's not entirely true, it is compatible if you start it up with the '-Version 2' argument forcing it to run .NET 2.

My resolution was to create a new shortcut that points to: "C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -Version 2" if you just want a shortcut, as I do.  Otherwise you can fire up the default PowerShell and run the command "powershell.exe -version 2"

After that, you'll still have to run the "Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell" command to be able to run the commands against the SharePoint Farm.

Hopefully this helps someone save some time, should they run into the same problem that I did.

Reply:
Sounds like you installed PowerShell 3.0, which uses the .NET 4 Framework.  PowerShell 2.0, included with Server 2008 R2, uses .NET 2.0 and is fully compatible with SharePoint 2010 without modifying any shortcut.
