Multiple GUEST NICs for packet analysis project
Hi All,
I have created a GUEST VM (Windows Server 2008 Std) under Windows 2008 Std Host. My Server has 2 network cards and up until this point I have only been using one of the cards.
I set up port mirroring to the port that the Server's second card is attached to. I created a VM adapter for the 2nd card and assigned it to my Windows 2008 Std Guest VM.
With port mirroring active I cannot get to the internet with the Guest machine. I would like to either add a second adapter or create a VM adapter that would allow the VM to access both the main NIC for internet access and the 2nd NIC for packet capture. Is this possible in Hyper-V? Can someone explain the steps?
Thank you,
Paul

You create two external virutal switches - one to each physical NIC.
Then the VM is given two NICs, one on each switch. Configure in the VM OS as appropriate.
It is essentially a physical network isolation model. Two distinct physical network segments. You just happen to have one physical switch port mirrored to one external virtual switch (and because of that only one VM is attached). and the other is regular traffic.

Indeed. While Microsoft herself is limited by American law therefore cannot export technologies (hence no official paid support from Microsoft) to a sanctioned country, we as an individual has no such limitation. Feel free to ask questions here, just don't expect MSFT staffs to provide answers if you mentioned this (or you may just ask questions without mentioning where do you come from, because... who cares?)
Also I think in such countries it's not uncommon to have local-user-group like forums. You may also try to find one and stick with them. You'll have better chance to find someone who can legally offer paid support there.

You can also instead use free and open alternatives like the mono framework if you have concerns about usage of microsoft products at your location.
You can still ask in here as it is still .NET, though no need for you to reveal your location if that may cause any issue.
I will move this thread to off topic forum as it is not on topic, as you yourself noted. You can continue asking here if anything, or start a new thread about a technical question.

Windows 8 Network cannot be disconnected
There seems to be no option to disconnect from the Network. The only thing which I can do is to disable the network right from the control panel settings.
I hope Microsoft Windows 8 have these features.

Network connect problem.
I am running windows 7 on the network and windows 2008. The two computers can see each other. I can ping both machines. But I connect see the windows 2008 on windows 7 in Network. I am seeing my computer and one other workstation. How can I see the server in network? The saver is not running active directory. It is a workgroup setup.
For more information when I try to map the drive on the server it is giving me an error saying windows cannot access the IP address of the server. Thank you.

Hi,
Let us do the following tests.
Method 1. Please disable IPv6 protocol for a test.
Method 2. Enable Network Discovery by using Group Policy Editor.
1. Open Group Policy Editor.
2. Expand "Computer Configuration", "Windows Settings", "Security Settings", "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security", and then "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security - {policy you have open}".
3 Right-click "Inbound Rules", and then click "New Rule".
4 In the Rule Wizard, on the Rule Type page, select"Predefined", and then select Network Discovery from the list. Click Next.
5 On the Predefined Rules page, ensure that the check box is on each rule that is part of the Network Discovery group, and then click Next.
6 On the Action page, select "Allow the Connection", and then click Finish.
Method 3. Configure NTLM authentication level
1. Click Start, type in Secpol.msc and press Enter.
2. Expand "Local Policies" and select "Security Options"
3. Locate "Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level" in the list and double-click it.
4. Change the setting from "Send NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session if negotiated"
5. Network Security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP Based (including secure RPC) Clients
6. Change the setting from "require 128 bit" to unchecked (No Minimum)
7. Click OK, and exit.

Defining DHCP lease request time interval in clients
Hello Friends :
I know that DHCP Server leases the IP adydress for 8 Days by default , and will check the IP address in a random amount of time , i want to know when does DHCP checks the lease duration every time ? i mean in which percentage of time it will check the clinet ? 50 % 80 % ? and can i change this interval manually ? i want to set the interval to 10 % !!! is that possible ? or is that possible to make the dhcp server to check the duration TTL in any reboot of the computer ?
Thanks Friends
I am in a relationship !!! A ship that is named relation :D
Reply:
Hello,
after 50% from the lease time the client will renew the lease, so with 8 days 1st renew is after 4 days, then2, then 1 and so on until it is expired. You can change the lease time if you need shorter leases but not the system itself.

SP2010 - Search (scopes, best bets, keywords etc) migrate from On-Premise to MS Dedicated Online (SP Online)
Hi,
Currently we have SP2010 on-premise environment and we are migrating the whole envrionment to Microsoft Online Dedicated (MSO-D) environment. It's like SharePoint Online cloud but dedicated servers.
Anyhow, we have the need to migrate all the search related stuff like best bets, scopes, keywords, etc. Originally, we wanted to use 'Search Migration Tool' developed by Microsoft but the MSO-D has rejected the usage of their own tool. Now, we are looking into other options like using 'search web service' or custom PowerShell script.
Just wondering if anyone out there has any experience, recommendation, or gotchas with these apporaches? Or any other suggestion?
thanks for your help.

Hi,
I would like to know if you received any error message when trying to start the Bluetooth. What is the log in Event Viewer?
Regarding the issue, please check the following situation.
1. Verify your computer model, make sure it has Bluetooth feature.
2. Verify if the device is recognized in Device Manager, download the latest driver from manufacture's site.
3. Verify your computer is set to enable Bluetooth devices to connect to your computer.
Hope this helps

1st, you may try to find the folder you set to save your first download file, and delete the file from there.
2nd, actually, you can also try start the download again directly.

Bug report: high CPU usage in Windows Explorer when browsing MP3 files with large album art
I would like to report a bug in Windows Explorer on Windows 8: when browsing MP3 files containing large album art, Explorer consumes a lot of CPU and is very slow in displaying the files' tags.
To reproduce, download the album at http://roboticpiratemonkey.com/music/colors-in-disguise (this is a legal download). Extract it to a new subfolder in My Music and then navigate to this folder with Explorer. Notice that it takes a long time for the files' tags to appear in Explorer. If you open Task Manager during this time you will also see that Explorer uses an excessive amount of CPU. Right-clicking an MP3 file and going to Properties - Details takes longer than usual as well.
The same issue reoccurs every time you go back to the folder in Explorer. It must be related to the large embedded album art in the MP3 files, because if you remove the album art with a tool like Mp3tag, Explorer behaves like normal again. However, I feel that Explorer should be able to handle MP3 files with large album art better.
Could someone please forward this to the right people at Microsoft? Thanks!

Hi Ning,
Glad to know the connect feedback established, thanks for your time and sharing. Just one more thing, the Connect site could be found in the Windows Server 2012 Beta Essentials Dashboard, just like the figure below:
However, the Connect site points to the SBS 2011 Essentials and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials. The snapshot has been listed below:
I think the Connect site should be updated to the Windows Server 2012 Essentials so that the customers will submit their feedback on the server directly.

Which server program do I need?
Im currently using whs v1 with 3 desktop, 1 laptop and a printer. All win7.
I want to be able to back computers, file share docs and stream music. I would also like most files to be kept and accessed from the server, the programs themselves can be run on the computers themselves. I would like to be able to access them from school, library or friends house. I'm confused over the different server software (app ,hpc, web ect...) that is available. I need someone to say this is the one you need. I will not hold anyone accountable for their opinions.

In my opinion, there are 2 options: WHS 2011 and Windows Server 2012 Essentials. Obviously, WS2012E is in beta (since you're posting in this forum I assume you already know that :) ). They have a lot in common (both backup clients, share files and stream media (both local and internet)). I think the main differences between the 2 are:
- cost - WHS 2011 can be purchased for $50.00, while WS2012E will cost $425.00 once it's released
- "drive-extender-like" technology - WHS 2011 has nothing at all while WS2012E has Storage Spaces (which is somewhat similar to DE)
- domain vs workgroup - WHS 2011 is in a workgroup while WS2012E creates a domain (main problem with that is that a client that is already joined to another domain cannot be part of this domain, but if you don't deal with domains (i.e. at work), then that's not really an issue)
My suggestion would be to try WS2012E Beta on either A) a spare computer or B) a virtual machine and give it a spin (it's beta so it's free). Just remember that this is a beta product and you should NEVER put your only copy of data on a beta product (back everything up somewhere else first).

Yes I do know WS2012E is a beta and I am testing on a spare machine. I was wondering about whs 2011 but was leery of the recent announcement of its demise. I am installing WS2012E right now but as far as 2008 r goes what type of server would I need.

Windows Home Server - Yes, Microsoft has officially ended the product line. However, WHS 2011 will have mainstream support until April 12, 2016. (FYI, WHS v1 mainstream support ends January 8, 2013.)
The client backup/restore feature in WHS 2011 / WS2012E is not available in any of the full server suites, so if that feature is important to you, you'll have to stick with one of my suggestions. As for media streaming, I don't believe any of the full server suites have that built-in either (although it looks like it could be installed manually, but I don't know that for certain as I've never tried it). Plus, the biggest hurdle with any of the full server suites is the cost (all of them are MUCH higher than WHS 2011 or WS2012E).

Where did you get that date from? The Server 2012 Essentials FAQ says:
"Q: How long will customers be able to purchase Windows Home Server 2011?
A: Windows Home Server 2011 will remain available as an OEM embedded product until December 31, 2025, and will remain available in all other current channels until December 31, 2013."

I got it from the Microsoft lifecycle website. It seems really strange that support ends in 2016, yet the product is still available from OEMs until 2025. My guess is that the FAQ you're referring to is a typo and should be 2015, but I'll see what I can find out from MS.kariya21

Open list item from an item on a different list is closed
You can use a button on an Infopath form to change the view as a user completes and online form. Is it possible to do something similiar between SharePoint Lists?
When the current form is closed (submitted) next open a related form on another list. It is possible to get the URL to the second list's related item but I dont know how to open this item.
Reason I can't use more views on the same list is because the Infopath form has too many fields and will no longer let me publish changes. I can create a new item on list 1 which has a workflow to create its partner item on list 2 and share the IDs between the two to tie them together. I can use these IDs to generate the URLs. The only step I'm missing is navigating between the two list items.
