Hello, I would appreciate if we could get some upfront insights on how this is all going to work technically. At this stage I would consider adopting a similar approach as was done within the Insider program, e.g. create fast / slow rings within the Enterprise.

What would be super cool , is if within a next version of ConfigMgr there would be some functionality provided in managing such rings, like all users / devices from a certain OU, Department, Business unit etc.

So basically, let me define rings and then let me define ring members , these ring members could be based on ConfigMgr collections for example.

Cheers

Alex

Hi Alex:

WSUS (and therefore config mgr) let you create and use groups as "rings" already now. As a matter of fact this was one of the best practices demo'ed by Johan at our Ignite session. Do you use groups as rings now? Any recommendations or issues with this?

Thx

SSIS to retrieve cookie information from the cloud

Has anybody used SSIS to pull cookies from the cloud?  I am unsure of how the cloud works, and how to set up the connection to it to process cookies.

Are there cookies in the cloud (not joking)? I thought it is a browser feature. Anyways, it seems not SSIS/ETL related. If you can do it with a script or exe you can do it with SSIS.

Aren't all cookies the same?  I guess I was right that there is no way to connect to the cloud to download files of any type, including cookies.  That was why I quit that job... I thought it was impossible too.

A Cookie is browser side technology that actually seem to be discontinued

Downloading files from Cloud is a cinch, depends what cloud provider though, if say we use Amazon Cloud we can use AzCopy http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsazurestorage/archive/2012/12/03/azcopy-uploading-downloading-files-for-windows-azure-blobs.aspx

Hi all,

I think my requirement is related to this topic. I have a requirement to connect to a Cloud Based service (SuccessFactors), which has a Web Service available. This web service has got standard methods in its wsdl file.

I called login successfully which has returned with a SessionID. After I've called a query method which as returned with "Invalid Session" error message.

I've looked into the WebService log and checked the different request. What I've found out, that after Login request, all other requests HTTP header should have a cookie with the SessionID in it.

So, basically I should be able add a cookie name and its value after login to be able to run any other method.

Does anyone know how to add a cookie into a HTTP header in SSIS?

Thanks,

Richard

P.S.: I'm new to SSIS and WebServices

Windows 10 Update - stopping this update in my enterprise.

Our school network is not ready for a mass update to Windows 10.  The uncontrolled deployment that would ensue would cause considerable bandwidth problems as well as potentially broken applications.  The caveat here is that I do not want to block Windows Updates, but I do not currently have Active Directory set up or a WSUS.  Please Help!!   If it were only a few machines then this would not be a problem, but there are 20000+ machines affected.

There is only 1 update that needs to be hid/blocked. Can you configure your WSUS to not push a certain update? I've not used it before.

This is the update that contains the notification/updater GWX.exe:

New Release of dbForge Data Generator for SQL Server

Our team now is working on a tool for SQL data generating and I'd like to present you a new - dbForge Data Generator for SQL Server 2.0 by Devart

It is a GUI tool for a fast generation of large volumes of SQL Server test table data. The tool supports all column data types and allows to define tables and columns for data generation, set value ranges, customize parameters for each column data type, preview data before generation, edit and save data generation scripts for the future use.

The new version has new customizable generators and improved performance. In next version we will add more meaningful data generators (Names, Countries, Emails and 70 more generators).

dbForge Data Generator for SQL Server has a 30-day trial period. We would be glad if you try out our tool and leave us a feedback. Thanks :)

Accurate size of a disk

I'm currently working on vbscript to report disk, partition, and logical drive usage and size data, in an exact way, in bytes. I use several WMI queries of Win32_DiskDrive, Win32_DiskPartition, Win32_LogicalDisk with associations. In some certain circumstances I've got interesting results, where the size of the disk is less then the size of the partitions on it.

In my experiences I've got these results from disks provided by the virtualisation layer, or by SAN connections.

For example:

Win32_LogicalDiskToPartition shows:

Antecedent : \\xxxxx\root\cimv2:Win32_DiskPartition.DeviceID="Disk #2, Partition #0" Dependent : \\xxxxx\root\cimv2:Win32_LogicalDisk.DeviceID="T:" EndingAddress : 1099510579199 StartingAddress : 1048576

from this data, the size should be 1 099 509 530 624 bytes and the EndingAddress: 1 099 510 579 199

the corresponding Win32_DiskPartition shows:

NumberOfBlocks : 2147479552 BootPartition : False Name : Disk #2, Partition #0 PrimaryPartition : True Size : 1099509530624 Index : 0

which is Ok, but the corresponding Win32_DiskDrive shows:

Partitions : 1 DeviceID : \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE2 Model : IBM 2145 Multi-Path Disk Device Size : 1099506078720 Caption : IBM 2145 Multi-Path Disk Device

The size is: 1 099 506 078 720

So the partition is greater then the disk.

From the MSDN library: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa394132%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Size
Data type: uint64
Access type: Read-only
Qualifiers: Units (Bytes)

Size of the disk drive. It is calculated by multiplying the total number of cylinders, tracks in each cylinder, sectors in each track, and bytes in each sector.

For more information about using uint64 values in scripts, see Scripting in WMI.

TotalCylinders
Data type: uint64
Access type: Read-only

Total number of cylinders on the physical disk drive. Note: the value for this property is obtained through extended functions of BIOS interrupt 13h. The value may be inaccurate if the drive uses a translation scheme to support high-capacity disk sizes. Consult the manufacturer for accurate drive specifications.

Example: 657

For more information about using uint64 values in scripts, see Scripting in WMI.

By the above property definitions, the disk size can be inaccurate.

Does anybody know a way to get the accurate disk size using wmi, or any script technique?

Hi Papp,

Does your SAN setup has any interface, I think it would be more accurately reporting the actual size. Any mechanism to read that info into windows would solve your purpose.

But I havn't seen anyone having issues with these reporting inaccuracies, you seem to be having some special case.

In your case its about 3 MB of inaccuracy for a single disk, for 1000 disks it would be 3GB. This in normal scenarios would be within acceptable tolarance.

Hi Satyajit321,

Sorry if I was not clear enough, my issue does not related to SAN disks only. Maybe the example could cause this mis-understanding. It mostly occures with disks of some kind of virtualization layer, or not real hard-disk-drives, like VMWare virtual machines, or SSDs, or FlashDrives, and so on...

The found inaccuracy would not be so big deal, but when I tried to create a report about used storage capacity, and calculate the "free" or "available" (not partitioned) space on the disk, and get negative numbers, it is rather disturbing. At least for me. :) I think or rather I feel there must be a way to get the exact size, as the Operating system is able to create partitions on that part, which is over the reported size.

------------------------------------
Reply:

Hi Papp,

Seems like you have found issues with the Virtual machine disk reported.

This is not much related, but just to highlight. When using Dynamically Expanding Disks the VM disk capacity can be more that the actual physical disk. Having this possibility might be the reason behind of this inaccuracy.

Hi Papp,

I get that we are going off topic on this.

There are some similar queries existing for long time.

Basically what I can suggest is don't mix the use of "Win32_DiskDrive.Size < Win32_DiskPartition.Size" in a same reporting tool. Use either of it not both.

Similar issues:

Can anyone explain why WMI WIN32_DiskDrive.Size 5MB smaller than Win32DiskPartition.Size on the same disk???

Who can Explain: Win32_Disk.Size < Win32_DiskPartition.Size???

Reply:

Hi Papp,

Issue here is the block size:

Sum fo NumberOfBlocks_DiskPartition > TotalSectors_DiskDrive

The TotalSectors = #Blocks   - is calculated correctly as per your formula [total number of cylinders* tracks in each cylinder * sectors in each track * bytes in each sector(512).]

Now the question here is how is NumberOfBlocks in Win32_DiskDrive calculated. This is also called "Number Sectors :" for Partition.

To determine the cluster size of a volume, run the following command at a command prompt, and then note the "Bytes Per Cluster" value:
fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo <<var>volume</var>>
Note The <<var>volume</var>> placeholder represents the volume letter.

For example, when you run the  fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c: command, you may receive results that resemble the following output:
NTFS Volume Serial Number : 0xf4300f6c300f3560 Version : 3.1 Number Sectors : 0x000000001d17dbee Total Clusters : 0x0000000003a2fb7d Free Clusters : 0x000000000102bfa0 Total Reserved : 0x0000000000000800 Bytes Per Sector : 512 Bytes Per Cluster : 4096 Bytes Per FileRecord Segment : 1024 Clusters Per FileRecord Segment : 0 Mft Valid Data Length : 0x000000000e630000 Mft Start Lcn : 0x00000000000c0000 Mft2 Start Lcn : 0x0000000001d17dbe Mft Zone Start : 0x00000000002185a0 Mft Zone End : 0x0000000000218740 RM Identifier : 1587CC47-A713-11DB-9287-806E6F6E6963
Note In this example, the "Bytes Per Cluster" value is 4096. This value represents a 4-kilobyte (KB) cluster size.

if you convert the HEX values to Decimal+1 it will be equal to NumberOfBlocks for that partition.

What I understood from all these research is that, Win32_DiskDrive is doing guess work (hence the warning by MS) and Win32_DiskPartition is actually reading the disk looking for StartingAddress -EndingAddress on the disk, hence is the true size.

It uses this information to decide upon the actual NumberOfBlocks for the partitions.

Win32_DiskDrive : Faster, quick, approximate info

Win32_DiskPartition: Slower, accurate info

Storing and accessing the variables in powershell

Hello Scripters

I would like to know how can I store a global variable which resides so that I can access even after the session is cancelled.

For instance

how can I access the variable A value which is  created  @ 4 AM cycle

creating a file and reading  file one option, is there an better option or easy way in power shell

What session?  PowerShell does not have sessions.  You can have a WMI session or a remote session.  I have jam sessions and Congress has Congressional sessions.

What kind of a session are you having?

If you are talking about scheduled taks then consider saving the session state to a file using $session | Export-CliXml state.clixml

Hello Saravana,

So you are saying, you are going to run a script at 4 AM and set a variable with some values and when you run the same script at 5 AM, you want to retrieve the same value/variable and make use of it?

If thats the case, you can consider writing a environment variable and quit once you are done.

Next time, you can read it from your script where ever you need to.

Let me know, if this helps!

Please mark as answer or vote as helpful if you find so!

Environment variables do not normally persist across process execution boundaries.  They would have to be set at a session level.  This can be done.  I would use the registry as it would be less disruptive.  Reading and writing a file is amore usual method.

Hi Paul,

Well that is hard to say whether or when will the enterprise release the build 10130.

If you would like to do a clean install, then please download the Windows 10 build 10074 and then upgrade to build 10130.

The upgrade process might be a little longer than before. I upgraded on a machine, and it took about 5 hours around.

How to preserve white space in Flat file schema?

In my current scenario, Publisher is publishing flat file message as a string to web service.

We wrote pipeline to fetch string and applied flat file schema to convert message into xml.

The problem i am facing is during processing i have to consider whitespace in the field.

eg  Header-->     Field|Field2|Field3|Field4

                          Abc||  |pqr

Here in the above sample field 2 is empty-- to i have to insert null value to database

but the field is space and i need to insert space to db. but in real time BizTalk is treating both as same and i m gettignn empty node

Is there is any way i could preserve whitespace.

Thanks

Reply:

In Field3 (or any other fields where presevation of spaces is required), set Pad Character to null (HEX: 0x00).

Thanks Praveen,

I am not using map in my scenario. I am receiving flat file data as string to my web service to which i am applying Flat file dis assembler.

Hi,

White space not preserved in flat files submitted to BizTalk Server
Cause: When a flat file is submitted to BizTalk Server, white space in
fields might be trimmed. This is because by default the underlying MSXML
parser does not preserve white space in a field with its Type property (on
the Declaration tab) set to Element.

Solution: If it is important to preserve white space in a field contained in
a flat file, in BizTalk Editor be sure to set the Type property on the
Declaration tab of the field in the source specification to Attribute.

Thanks la Cour. Your solution worked. I think the services are not restarted properly due to which it was not reflected first time.

Outlook Rule does not execute

Outlook 2013

Exchange 2013 SP1

I have a rule to forward to an address an inbound email with a specific From. it does not work when the email I go to manage rules and run all, it forwards. It was working but now is not. This is the only forward rule I have created. Other flag rules work.

Why not automatic?

John Lenz

Reply:

Are you trying to forward to an external address? That is disabled by default at Exchange level.
http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/automaticreply.htm

Triggering the rule manually is allowed which is why it forwards then.

Sequencing Toad for Oracle 12.1 with App-V 5.0

Application Name:  Toad for Oracle

Application Version:  12.1

Company Name:  Dell (formerly Quest Software)

Sequencer Version:  5.0 SP2

App-V Client Version Tested On:  5.0, 5.0 SP1, 5.0 SP2

Operating System Sequenced On:  Windows 7 (32bit)

Pre-requisites:  None (although the application will require that an Oracle client be available to work)

Client Operating Systems Successfully Deployed To:  Windows 7 (32 and 64bit), Windows Server 2008 (32 and 64bit)

*Posted by non-Microsoft Employee:  Cody Lambert (a Fortune 100 company)

If Posted by Microsoft Employee, the Corresponding KB Article Reference:  N/A

Steps to Sequence the Application:

Steps to be performed prior to sequencing:

  • Step 1:  Extract Toad for Oracle 12.1.msi from the Quest Installer package.  (This will also extract the QuestKey.reg template file)
  • Step 2:  Configure the License File (QuestKey.reg)  http://documents.software.dell.com/DOC98822
  • Step 3:  Copy the Toad for Oracle12.1.msi as well as the QuestKey.reg to the sequencer machine

Steps to be performed during sequencing:

  • Step 1:  Start Sequencer > Create package (default) > Standard Application (default) > Perform a custom installation > Primary Virtual Application Directory (C:\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle 12.1\) > Next to start capture
  • Step 2:  Import the QuestKey.reg
  • Step 3:  Install Toad for Oracle12.1.msi  (be sure to un-check the box to start Toad when installation finishes)
  • Step 4:  Check "I am finished installing" box and click Next
  • Step 5:  Do not run any programs to manage first use tasks
  • Step 6:  Customize
  • Step 7:  Run each program briefly to optimize package (Toad for Oracle will complain that there are no Oracle clients installed on the Sequencer machine.   That is normal)
  • Step 8:  Proceed as normal thru the rest of the Sequencing UI.

Known Issues/Limitations:  Most of the user based settings are created when the application is first run, so in order to keep the user settings outside the package do not run the application during sequencing.

Approximate Sequencing Time:  20 minutes (includes preparation time for licensing model)

Descriptive Tags:  App-V, 5.0, Toad for Oracle, Recipe, Guidance

Update:  If you are planning on running this in a stateless environment with profile management, you will want to follow the steps outlined in this article related to copying the ProductLicenses.xml file during sequencing.  https://support.software.dell.com/toad-for-oracle/kb/61238

How is the Oracle made available on the client machine? Is it a physical install or App-V package?

------------------------------------
Reply:

On some machines Oracle is installed locally.  On others Oracle is delivered with App-V and part of a Connection group that contains Toad.

Great post thanks Cody - works a treat! I don't think i'd have got this app working otherwise...
Only thing that puzzles me is when adding the registry key to HKCU before install, I can't how fathom Toad continues to remain licensed for additional users once deployed as HKCU is not included by the sequencer? I can only assume that when setup queries this key on install it somehow records this information elsewhere which it then applies to new users.

------------------------------------
Reply:

The registry keys added to HKCU before install are actually captured in the sequence.  What happens is, when Toad runs thru its  "first run" for each user, it queries this location in registry to get its license information.  So basically what we are doing is providing each user the environment they would see if they just had a fresh Toad install on a local machine.  All of their customizations are created outside of the App-V package as well this way.  If my post helps, Please vote!  Thanks!

I'm trying to sequence TOAD 12.6 with 4.5 Sequencer. Everything looks good during the sequencing, but when I stream it, the license doesn't seem to be applying (get prompted to add license info). Any ideas?

Windows 10 Update Needs To Change ASAP...

Windows 10 update has become a real big bug bear for me. I do not know how many other people have this issue. However it is driving me insane!!!

MICROSOFT GIVE PEOPLE CONTROL OF WINDOWS UPDATE, BEFORE YOU RUIN ANOTHER OS!!!!

I have contacted you enough times to show you the issue. Now you have not listened I have posted a video, to show the world that this really needs to be fixed...

IMHO it is a done deal.  There is a bit more flexibility for Pro users but MS is insistent on forced updates.

Did you give them feedback using the app in win 10?

The latest news is that users who get to upgrade to Windows 10 PRO version will have the Manual or Auto update options.

Those who get to upgrade to Windows 10 Home will be on Auto update.

excerpt:  Source
Windows 10 Home won't be able to opt out from the automatic update, but Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have more update control.

Pro/Enterpirse can delay/postpone but not indefinitely

.....to allow those with access to the CBB to defer new feature updates for Windows 10 only for a set period of time. But they cannot defer them indefinitely. To guarantee this, Microsoft is likely to allow CBB users to defer only one set of new features before requiring them to update to them in order to continue to get security fixes. In other words, those on the CBB will only get security patches for the current Windows 10 release and the "N-1," or the previous version of Windows 10 minus the latest set of feature updates.

emet downloads

How can I download EMET 5.X to be able to install on standalone machines that have no internet connectivity?

How does it work?

Hi,

I have a customer who has a Microsoft Exchange Server Account for their email, they are paying a substantial amount each month to have this and they really do not need to be paying so much.

They want to move their hosting away and just have a straight forward IMAP account, if they change Name Servers will they lose all of their emails, or are their emails actually stored on their PC?

Thanks in advance

Reply:

I would suggest to:

- create mail accounts/addresses on a new hosting provider

- change MX and SPF records

- backup mailboxes either directly on mail server or by exporting mailboxes on end user machines to PST (standard mail format is OST)

- distribution of new access details to end users, reconfiguration of Outlooks/email clients.

- restore content of PSTs to Outlooks. Maybe I would suggest to make this step when Outlook is disconnected and check Outbox before reconnecting. After reconnecting imported items should be synced to server.

Also: If you use Office 365, you can consider using a different/lower plan to pay less.

PS: Also I would suggest to test this scenario on a test domain (if available)

How many users are using Exchange mailbox? You could configure multiple POP3 accounts (1 per user) to download their mail to separate PST files. These files could be imported to new mail accounts.

Upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

HI,

I have the Version "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP3) Express Edition with Advanced Services (64-bit) SP3" currently installed in my machine but when I try to Upgrade the same to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise get an error "SQL Server 2008 Edition Upgrade " failed as the SQL Server instance doesn't meet the Upgrade matrix requirement.

Server Version
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP3) Express Edition with Advanced Services (64-bit) SP3

Can someone guide me to the correct steps and installer to be used for this Upgrade to Enterprise Edition.

Any help in this regard will be of great help.

Thanks

Hi,

As per upgarde matrix you can surely upgrade it I am not sure why SQl Server is giving this error. Can you lointo SQl server express and run below command and post the output

select @@Version
IMP: Make sure you are not running cross update like if you have 64 bit express edition it can only be upgraded to 64 bit enterprise using in place upgarde. Make sure its not 32 bit

Olaf you can install but that is not supported. Microsoft has not put that restriction that your installation would be stopped if it is Client OS however you are in unsupported state.

The error must be something else there is someother issue probably withe SQl Server enterprise edition you downloaded. Are you sure you did not downloaded evaluation edition ?

No you cannot upgrade from express to evaluation version that is not allowed. You have to upgrade to licensed version as per support matrix..
