Storage Spaces - Game stopper

Hi,

I'm concerned that there remains very significant problems with Storage Spaces such that to commit data to it would be unwise.  I have yet to hear a microsoft reply on this issue.

This issue stems from:
" Logical block provisioning permanent resource exhaustion condition" - which leads to a disk going offline for unclear reasons.

This appears to happen when the disk is close to full, or when Thin Provisioning issues apply.  Regardless it occurs without warning - with no notice or alert and simply takes the drive offline.

There are a number of examples of this occuring - some very recently - below is the best summary I could find.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/517d1f02-b619-4a3a-928f-1bd5e8fef5fe

I was (and more importantly am) having this error despite having four drives in the storage space having 1.6Tb each  (the pool has four columns)  I upgraded to RTM and reattached all drives - in Storage spaces defence the old spaces were recognised and able to be recommenced easily.

Yet again however during a file copy - the drive is taken offline with the below message.

The pool with the recurrent issue has 12 2Tb drives - and using this pool are two virtual disks thining provisioing to 50tb each.  The pool is mirrored with 4 columns.  Giving capacity of 21.8tb and current freespace of 6.51tb.   8 drives are full-ish and when they become completely full the error occurs and I need to reclaim/delete data.  4 drives still have 1.6 tb each available on them which does not appear to be used.  See below.

Optimise-Volume -defrag -retrim -SlabConsolidate -- make little difference
I am now on RTM with all updates applied.

How do I use the almost 8TB's (!!!) of space that is going to waste!
Microsoft?  any comments/answers as this does appear (to me) to a big issue in something now released to everyone via Win8

Hi girishrastogi,

I have a few questions:-

1. How are you using reporting services in web application?

2. Which authentication protocol are you using for SSRS?

Offhand, the error simply means - 401: access denied. Please enable HTTP logging for SSRS and see if you are getting 401.1. If yes it might be worthwhile to get a disable loop back check done on the box - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861.

Does Microsoft know something about Metro that we don't?

Windows Phone 7 was a flop in terms of sales, plain and simple. Win Mobile did far better. To say that Windows 8 reception has been mixed is the understatement of the century. And the new XBox Metro-like interface sparked outrage.. And don't even mention Zune and Kin! Almost all Metro products failed.

Now aside from the limitations of the API interface in Windows  8, It looks as if the majority of people simply DON'T EVEN LIKE METRO (the design). People like vivid user interfaces with 3D effects, lively graphics and icons and millions of colors. Metro is the complete opposite of it. A GUI philosophy around credos like "Typography is beautfiful", "flatness", "no chrome at all costs" and "modernism" (minimalism) might be hip with the bleeding edge fashionistas - that's why WP7 got tons of design awards, yet sells like icecream in Antarctica - but it seems to repel the average user.

Can anyone explain to me why they hold on to this design with such zeal and continue to shove it everywhere? It would take probably far less time to design something else and more appealing for the most people (proof), than go through this Metro-march of tears for years now. The way Microsoft is stubbornly holding on to Metro, despite its performance in the market, is not rational anymore.

I.e. See the concept videos about interactive surfaces - there have been several during the last couple of years.

Not just small surfaces, but also large (i.e. walls, buildings whatever), different form factors ...

Interactive does not just mean user interactive ... system interactions are also very interesting in a more natural host environment, i.e. automation or a sort of nature ...

Beside the old surface table proto http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRU3NemA95k there are much more interesting concepts around. Many years ago I saw a concept of controlling power plants ... looked like something out of a Sci-Fi movie with holo stuff. But not just a video - but a demo.

Requirements for Indexed Views

Requirements for Indexed Views

A view must meet the following requirements before you can create a clustered index on it:

  • Set the ANSI_NULLS option to ON when you create the tables referenced by the view.

  • Set the ANSI_NULLS and QUOTED_IDENTIFIER options to ON prior to creating the view.

  • The view must only reference base tables, not any other views.

  • Base tables referenced by the view must be in the same database as the view and must have the same owner.

  • Create the view and any user-defined functions referenced in the view with the SCHEMABINDING option. This means that the underlying tables or other database objects cannot be altered or dropped as long as the view or function exists. In other words, don't create indexed views until your table design is finalized since you'll just have to drop the view to make schema changes to the table.

  • Reference all table names and user-defined functions with two-part names only—for example, "dbo.Customers" for the Customers table.

  • Any functions used by the view must be deterministic, meaning that the function must always return the same result anytime it's called with the same set of input values.

The following Transact-SQL syntax elements are illegal in an indexed view:

  • The * syntax to specify all columns. Column names must be explicitly stated.

  • Repeated columns—for example, SELECT Col1, Col2, Col1 AS Col. However, you can re-use a column if it's part of a different expression
    for example, SELECT Col1, AVG(Col1), Col1 + Col2 AS Total

  • Derived tables and subqueries.

  • ROWSET.

  • UNION.

  • Outer joins or self joins.

  • TOP and ORDER BY.

  • DISTINCT

  • COUNT(*). Use COUNT_BIG(*) instead, which returns a bigint data type and is allowed.

  • The following aggregate functions: AVG, MAX, MIN STDEV, STDEVP, VAR, and VARP.

BHOLD User Manuals

I've located the BHOLD documents on TechNet at this location: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134096

There doesn't appear to be a user guide however which strikes me as odd.

Does anyone know if one exists and if so, where to access it?

Thanks,

Direction to any user manuals would be appreciated.

Specifically, right now I am looking for the doco that describes the following:

  • CRUD of roles, applications & permissions in Core
  • Creation & Configuration of MA for connecting to BHOLD DBs.
  • How to populate BHOLD model generator with data through MAs rather than files.
  • Self Service - How is the New request supposed to function? It doesn't appear to work on my install at least.
  • Attestation - User Manual
  • Stewards - Why does this accept free text? What should I put in this field?
  • Silverlight versions recommended (I get many errors in the interface)
  • Permission context params, Context formulas, Permission context attachments?  Where is this documented?

It would be great to see a BHOLD dotpoint added to documentation roadmap to provide an end to end story.

I feel as though I'm stumbling around in the dark with this app, and I know I am not the only one!  Shed some light please?

Matthew

------------------------------------
Reply:

I very much agree with Matthew and feel pretty much the same way about the stumbling. There is only very limited documentation for the BHOLD Suite online and it simple not enough to make you master the product as you must to go into production with it.

Basically, we lack documentation for all of the products within the BHOLD Suite.

We have set up a very simple system that enables users to request permission, approvers to accept and get the permissions out to the connected systems, but we are still facing issues and problems due to the lack of information regarding the software. I cannot say if some of the issues we discover are fixable in the software configuration or if they are flaws in the BHOLD Suite. Currently, we are dealing with the current issues/challenges:

  • BHOLD Core: Which role types exist and what do they mean.
  • BHOLD Core: How to set limitation for a line role approver to make him an candidate for approval of only a limited number of roles.
  • BHOLD Core: Which set of roles to give to stewards, attestation campaign owner, analysts, BHOLD Self Service users/admins etc.
  • BHOLD Core: Why does the help doc not show? You are always redirected back to the main page.
  • BHOLD Mode Generator: How to populate BHOLD model generator with data through MAs rather than files.
  • BHOLD Self Service: How to fix BHOLD self service within FIM Portal. Most data controls do not show the expected data that is present in the B1 database. (Nothing is shown in "Top 10 users in your responsibility" (for administrators), "Role Information", and "My Requests" and "My Roles" for non-administrators.)
  • BHOLD Attestation: How to undo the decline of a permission in attestation.
  • BHOLD Attestation: How to set roles automatically requestable in BHOLD Self Service efter a decline by a steward.
  • BHOLD Attestation: How to get the email functionalitety to work. We consequently get an error that doesn't tell much.

We haven't looked deeply into BHOLD Analytics or BHOLD Model Generator yet.

Anyhow, I expect Microsoft to release documentation for the BHOLD Suite really soon. Hopefully this is not just wishful thinking. :-)

best regards
Søren Aamand

The quality of the documentation is low. Especially the architecture options. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134107(v=ws.10).aspx

e.g. "..Note that if end-user self-service is required, the BHOLD FIM Integration module must be installed on the same server as the FIM Service and Portal. .."

So .. if your ideal FIM topology is to separate FIM Portal and FIM Service onto separate servers, is this BHOLD guide saying that won't work for BHOLD? And what if you have multiple instances of FIM service and FIM portal for high availability and scalability? Can BHOLD scale in the same manner? No mention is made about scaling BHOLD.

Some more confusing advice in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134095(v=ws.10).aspx

Note
Because BHOLD Core requires .NET 3.5, it cannot be installed on Server Core.

"

What is meant by "Server Core"?

It also talks about "Silverlight 4" as a pre-requisite on the server side. Should it had said instead " Silverlight 4 or later"? Or will it have problems with Silverlight 5?

Why does the "Simple" Storage Space Mode have such a bad rap?

So the Windows 8 storage space options have been a bit of a disappointment at least in their current forms, but most of the criticism has been aimed at the terrible speed performance of parity mode.  Personally, I am interested in a simpler setup and would like to hear some feedback.

I have a 64Gb SSD that is not worth reselling, but why not pair it up with my 2Tb moving noisy parts drive?  The standard criticism about the RAID-0 "simple" setup is that each drive you span over non-redundantly increases the probability of catastrophic failure.  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  The spinning noisy larger drives are nearly always going to be where that risk is significant, and my options are put everything on that drive or "simple storage" combine it with a SSD I would otherwise sell very cheaply.  I see little additional risk of failure by adding the SSD and in a theoretical RAID-0 configuration it should give me some added speed.  I backup online pretty regularly after having issues with mechanical drives in the past, so I'll ignore all the scare mongering with regards to data loss for now.  That being said, are there real speed benefits to be seen with the way windows 8 implements it's RAID-0 "simple" storage technique?  Is it possible that it is so poorly implemented that I may actually see a cut in performance?

Intelligent feedback appreciated. Thank you!

I hope the sound of a spinning HDD will be as foreign to my children as the sound of a modem is to children of today.

Ease of access issue with onscreen keyboard when using Java Robot class

I am developing a device that controls the mouse movement through the Java robot class.  I am having a major issue with Windows 8's on screen keyboard. It works great as long as long as the user does not accidently mouse click on the keyboards title bar.  If you click there the java robot mouse freezes.  The USB mouse on the computer is still active and a single usb mouse click over the onscreen keyboard will bring the java robot back to life, but the point of ease of access features is to help those that perhaps cant use the usb mouse....
Any ideas how I can get around this issue??

Is there maybe a fix in the works???

I am tired of calling the windows 8 Upgrade support line

I purchased the windows 8 upgrade online through the upgrade assistant and when I click the checkout button it said it could not be processed but when I checked my credit card it was charged. This was on November 9 I never received a download link. I called customer support that day they suggested refunding my credit card after not believing me when I said I paid for it. Then I tried again and same thing happened. So on November 14th called support again and they said they would escalate the case and I would get a call within 3-5 days so Nov 22 I called again because no one called me back. They then said they would escalate it to the highest level and have them send me a product key and download link, well as of today I called again because no one called me and again they said someone was going to call me

Really is this customer service, no wonder more people are going with Apple. If there is someone on here from Microsoft I think the least that Microsoft could do is mail me the Windows 8 package to make up for all of this trouble! I am seriously considering switching to apple. If there is an employee my case reference # is 1188711645

Relative Performance in the Real World, Windows 8 x64 vs. Windows 7 x64

There's a lot of hoopla over Windows 8's "improved performance".  People sometimes say "it runs better than Windows 7".  This is touted as one of the (very few) reasons a business might want to upgrade to Windows 8.

But does it really have better performance?  Let's find out.

Let us not forget that people are often comparing a freshly installed OS to one that's been loaded up with applications and drivers and whatnot.  Unless you take great pains to maintain what's running, a brand new fresh install of Windows 7 runs faster than a loaded-up copy as well.  I suggest that you simply can't put any stock in people's anecdotal comments.

It's clear that Windows 8 boots quicker - measurably so.  It's still quicker to boot up than Windows 7 even with Hybrid Boot turned off.  But so what?  We're talking what, some tens of seconds quicker?  I don't know about you, but I don't do a lot of rebooting.  All my business machines run 24/7 and just stay up until a Windows Update requires a reboot.  It's not a big deal to wait a whole minute for the system to reboot every week or two.

What I care about is whether the new OS is more efficient at doing real work.

And so I have been doing objective real-world testing, with two similarly prepared virtual machines, given the same resources and with the same power (they're running on the same host workstation and have been given the same virtual resources).

So here I will outline my testing of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate vs. Windows 8 x64 Enterprise.  Both are x64.  Both are configured for best no-nonsense desktop performance using all the tweaks in the book (my books).  Both have been given identical hardware resources and run on one 1600 x 1200 monitor..

Disparate WEI scores seem to imply the Windows 8 system has better performance for most things (see below).  I'll follow with responses detailing the comparitive tests I've done.  In subsequent responses I'll outline how well the two systems actually work in a direct head-to-head test.

Windows 7 x64 Ultimate vs. Windows 8 x64 Enterprise WEI

Watch for my responses in this thread.  And please feel free to comment!

Windows 7 vs. Windows 8 - Boot Time

Windows 7:

  • Cold boot including POST to desktop - 21.8 seconds
  • Reboot - 25.0 seconds
  • Shutdown - 9 seconds

Windows 8:

  • Cold boot including POST to desktop - 15.4 seconds
  • Reboot - 16.2 seconds
  • Shutdown - 8.2 seconds

We can see that there's not a radical difference here.

Note:  Windows 8 did not use Hybrid Boot for this test, which can provide faster Windows 8 cold bootup times on supported hardware.

Windows 7 vs. Windows 8 - Network File Access

I wrote a Legacy command line Win32 application that calculates a CRC on a tree of folders and files.  To simulate a user accessing data from a server, I ran it on a folder on one of my file servers (running Vista x64) containing 395 files in 34 folders.  The server and network were not loaded with other work.  The times were repeatable to within a few seconds, and those shown here are the best measured of sets of 5 tests each.

Windows 7:  17 seconds

Windows 8:  24 seconds

As you can see above, I couldn't get the Windows 8 system to access multiple files across the network as quickly as Windows 7 with network operations.

Windows 7 vs. Windows 8 - Web Page Display

IE10 is supposed to be more efficient than IE9.  To test that, I timed how long it took to do several things on the web...  Note:  Desktop browser used in Windows 8.

Time to completely load http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/W8ITProPreRel/thread/18b53644-6c6b-4d32-820a-53134a0913f3 in logged-in state to where the user avatars appeared.

Windows 7's IE9:

  • 13.6 seconds

Windows 8's IE10:

  • 16.0 seconds

Time to completely load http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/general  (times were quite variable across multiple runs; listed below are the fastest)

Windows 7's IE9:

  • 2.8 seconds

Windows 8's IE10:

  • 1.8 seconds

Frame Rate with 100 fish on http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/files/latest/download

Windows 7's IE9:

  •  Averaged around 33 FPS

Windows 8's IE10:

  •  Averaged around 40 FPS

That rounds out my set of tests for now.  If you have more you'd like to see done, please let me know.

I'm a little surprised to get zero comments on this.

Doesn't anyone feel it's important that Windows 8 really isn't any faster in general than Windows 7, even though many folks say it is?  Have we really reached a state where hype is more important than substance in a computer operating system?

the same applied to Vista vs Win7. Win7 is also a Hype and not really faster compared to Vista.

After using Windows 7 for couple years, and now using Windows 8 it does really seem faster.

It's likely that Windows 7 would seem faster too if you installed it afresh.

It's also possible that your system was lacking a resource - e.g., RAM - that Windows 8 does use less of.

Noel could any of the networking results be attributed to the drivers? i.e. I have noticed some
improvements from both Intel and RealTek Network drivers as they have been updated. Although
at times network access does seem slower on the Windows 8 systems.

It's possible.  VMware just released a .0.1 update and it seems to have brought the network speed up a bit in the Windows 8 testing, but it's still not quite where it is in Windows 7.  Now the two are only about 1 second apart though, with Windows 8 being slightly slower.

I was just looking at the video posted on this Blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/08/delivering-fast-boot-times-in-windows-8.aspx

with UEFI and an SSD Windows 8 boot time seems unreal - What do you think?

Thank you for your comment, FoV_D007.

Windows 8 has the Hybrid Boot feature, which is a derivation of Hibernation.  Of course it boots up quickly - it has very little to do, and SSD transfer rates are huge.  But then it's not a complete bootup - lots of things aren't reinitialized.  Note that a Windows 7 system can be Hibernated to SSD and restored from Hibernation very quickly as well.

Based on my own Windows 8 testing, the fact that when I boot the system I expect a full, fresh copy of the operating system to be initialized, and the fact that with SSD a regular bootup takes 15 to 20 seconds anyway I feel the extra convenience of Hybrid Boot isn't giving sufficient value to overcome the potential to retain problems from the prior Windows session as well as possibly add new ones because of drivers that don't wake up properly.  For most reliable operation I recommend turning Hybrid Boot off.  But if you turn on and off your computer a lot, perhaps it will be more attractive to you and worth the added risk of instability.

A REboot on Windows 8, by the way, is always a full, fresh startup, just as with Windows 7.  And yes, Windows 8 is faster at this than Windows 7.  But not hugely so.  We're talking 9 seconds faster, per my measurements above.

Bootup is about the only thing where Windows 8 consistently outpaces Windows 7.  People focus on bootup, but to me the performance of normal operations seems more important.

I thought doing some benchmarks of file system responsiveness.  Both the virtual machines are backed by my large SSD array.

1.  I opened a single Explorer window, navigated to the root folder of drive C:, selected all files and folders in the right (files) pane, and chose properties.

Windows 7 File Enumeration:

  • 133,430 files in 10.4 seconds == 12,800 files/second
  • Second time with data cached in RAM:  4.0 seconds.

Windows 8 File Enumeration:

  • 206,161 files in 9.0 seconds == 22,900 files/second
  • Second time with data cached in RAM:  2.6 seconds.

The above came out intriguingly, significantly better on Windows 8, implying that the folder parsing in Windows 8 is more efficient, so I did some additional benchmarks to see whether the entire NTFS file system seems to be implemented faster on Windows 8.

2.  A search of all files in the Windows folder and all subfolders for a string using grepWin, which tests file reading speeds.

Windows 7 Search:

  • 78623 files searched in 401 seconds (191 files/second)
  • 21716 megabytes searched in 401 seconds (54 megabytes/second)

Windows 8 Search:

  • 97544 files searched in 483 seconds (201 files/second)
  • 21156 megabytes searched in 483 seconds (44 megabytes/second)

Hard to see a conclusion here...  It seems that maybe Windows 8 can traverse an NTFS folder structure more quickly but can't read from the files themselves quite as quickly.
